Robocopy? Copy Directory Structure 1 level

Q: Robocopy? Copy Directory Structure 1 level

I want copy a list of folders (a few hundred) to a new location. I tried using robocopy but can only get it to either copy the selected folder or all folders with subfolders. What I want is to only copy one level of folders and not the subfolders within.
Example:
C: Drive (the source) ->Clients->Client 1
->Order1 ->More SubFolders
->Order2
->Order3
->Order4
->Client 2 ->Order1
->Order2
->Order3
->Order4
->Client 3
->Client 4
So I would want to copy over just the first level of folders (the list of clients), but none of the subfolders within each client folder.

any help would be great.
thanks.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi,

Try using the /LEV:n switch in your robocopy command.

From robocopy /? at command prompt

Code:
::
:: Copy options :
::
/S :: copy Subdirectories, but not empty ones.
/E :: copy subdirectories, including Empty ones.
/LEV:n :: only copy the top n LEVels of the source directory tree.
It should look similar to this:

Code:
robocopy C:\Clients G:\Backup\Clients /LEV:2
Perform some tests to make sure it works OK.

Hello,
I'm trying to do the equivalent of xcopy /t /e in robocopy.  That is, I only want to copy the folder tree, not the files themselves.

A:using robocopy to copy folder structure only

It looks like the  /e /xf * switches are what I want.  /e copies empty directories.  /xf * tells it to exclude all files.

I'd like to use Robocopy (I'm using Xcopy now) to copy everything from the 'current' folder. It appears that Robocopy absolutely has to have a path of some sort to correctly work. In Xcopy, we were able to runXcopy *.* C:\somedirectory\If I try the same in Robocopy I get a an error"No Destination Directory Specified"Orange County District Attorney

A:Robocopy - Wildcard to copy everything from current source directory

Hi Sandy,

It's true ROBOCOPY doesn't handle wild cards, but what you're after is still possible:

Say I want this:

C:\temp> robocopy *.* c:\temp2\

I'll get the error you get - "No Destination Directory Specified"

BUT, if you try this:

C:\temp>  robocopy c:\temp\ c:\temp2\

ROBOCOPY will work and do what your after. Quotation marks can also be used in the above path references.

I suppose one of the reasons for the lack of wildcard support is the fact that ROBOCOPY actually works to exclude files types later with the /XF switch (such as "/XF *.mp3"). More here.

Hope this helps,

Hello,
I need to solve the following problem and I would like to know if I can to this with Copyrobot, I am asking here, because I have never done anything with Copyrobot before.
I have one network drive and X computers from which I need to move data to the network drive. The folder structure on PC1 could look like this:
-/root
--/project1
---/name1
----/date0101
-----/file1.x

On PC2 it could look like this:
-/root
--/project1
---/name1
----/date0101
-----/file2.x
--/project2
---/name2
----/date0102
-----/file1.x

Now on the network drive I would like to save the following:
-/root
--/project1
---/name1
----/date0101
-----/file1.x
-----/file2.x
--/project2
---/name2
----/date0102
-----/file1.x
This this possible with CopyRobot ? And if yes, how would I start. Thanks in advance

Hi

With the Robocopy command of Windows 8.x, how do I do a copy of a file (renaming it) in the same directory of the source file?

Thanks

Bye

A:Robocopy and same directory

You can't. Use copy or xcopy if you want to rename.
e.g.
Code:
xcopy c:\test\old.txt c:\test\new.txt

Note xcopy will always prompt you with "Does c:\test\new.txt specify a file name or a directory name on the target" so you would probably be better off with
Code:
copy /v c:\test\old.txt c:\test\new.txt

where the /v verifies the copy.

Does something seem odd with this file structure?

There's a ton of files listed in the top level directory that I would normally think should be down in the Windows level.

The view here is with hidden files and folders OFF.

I recently had an infection located in this same folder with a similar type of file name ( .sys )

Inside each of these folders, there's another folder with a long Alpha numeric name. In that folder is an application that matches the name of the first folder.

I've never seen this before.

Malewarebytes doesn't detect anything.

I have used ROBOCOPY to tranfer a large file from or to a USB drive and the destination Directory on both occassions has beeen chnaged to a hidden system directoiry, which could not be seen in Windows explorer or through command line access, even with the
"Show hidden and System files" set on in the view properties window.
The command executed was ROBOCOPY {source drive} {destination drive\folder} /MIR
The command echoed all the actions performed during the copy and displayed a successful copy command summary at the end.
To enable windows to see the directory I had  to either type the directory in the explorer address bar, or use the command prompt to change the attribute of the directory as follows "attrib -h -s d:\Films", whereupon the directory was visible in windows
explorer.
Can anyone suggest a way out if this wwithout the need to execute the attribb -h -s command after every ROBOCOPY command?

Hi,

Thanks for posting in Microsoft TechNet forums.

I just performed a test using above command without any problem. I am assuming it is due to the USB drive itself, it may be infected by viruses or malware. Regarding
this, I would like to provide the following suggestions:

1.
Use ROBOCOPY to copy files to the built-in hard drive to see if the issue occurs.
2.
Manually copy the files to the external USB drive to see if they are hidden.

3.
Update the security software and perform a full scan.

4.
Format the USB drive to remove suspicious files completely and perform ROBOCOPY again.

I have been known to lose some pictures in the directory, because it is different depending on how you look at it. For example in

C:\documents and settings\myname\mydocuments\mypictures\xxx\yyy

if I look at it as thumbnails some of one or two levels of folders may be missing, i.e they do not appear, but if I look at a list they are there.

It is much easier to find a specific photo as a thumbnail than as a date, and the confusion has caused me to believe that I had lost bunches of pictures, when I had not .

Is this quirk in Windows or am I doing something wrong?

are already in place but if it needs to create a folder it will error.  So it seems as though Robocopy is unable to create the folders it needs to when using a WebDav mapped drive.  Why would this be?  I can create folders in the mapped drive

In past twenty years I have been able to handle all infections etc with software but got a really infeted cd and when I opened it my AVG didn't stop what turned out to be a really obscene infection. I have removed lots of thing with spybot adaware and webroot antivirus but have seen evidence of the sassar virus and I know those types can be hard to get.

My main problem in my explorer.exe does not show my hard drive (C) and the window no longer has the tool bars. I can occasionally see c drive in my network but none of the other computers (4) and they can't see this one which is the main computer. I have tried reinstalling the network but it didn't work. Probably because sassar utilizes network ports.

I used my xp disk to install a clean user but I'm afraind if I can find c on the bad side I might import something bad when I try to back up stuff to move over. Fixing the infected side would be the best answer if possible.

Is there any way in Windows Vista to drop the subdirectory structure of a directory to a file? I am needing to know what the directory structure is for data recovery purposes (the backup is too old to use, but can be used to find out the basic directory structure).

Like taking directory A and then getting a dump of all the subdirectory structure below that into a file.

I know I can do a dir /A:D /S but its a very unhandy format and it floods the whole thing with . and .. directory listings :(

Hi Lord Chaos. . .

I am unsure if these two items that I have will be of any use or not, but I thought it worthwhile to pass them on and let you be the judge. The first is simply the tree command within DOS itself... Have you tried it? Just type the word.

Now... The program that I use at times is TREE for listing by directory including space.

Finally, I have a screen shot or you. Those directories showing up with nothing inside them... they honestly thought they did when starting to dump directory content. Well.. see the screen shot.

Hello folks,

I know similar questions have been asked but I "might" have a unique one. What I have been trying to do is to copy the "C:\Users", "C:\Program Files", & "C:\Program Files (x86)" to another clean hard drive "D:\".

I'm doing this to make more room for the OS in the C: drive while date will be in the D: drive. Now I have successfully robocopy Program Files & Program Files (x86). I also have copied most of the Users directory but for this stubborn Real\update directory. This is I think the real player program. I get this Access Denied and "Error 5" error. I am in elevated command prompt. I achieved this via the Repair your computer prompt on the Windows install DVD.

I also have rmdir for Program Files & Program Files and have made a mklink for both of them so windows knows where they will be. But I have not did a full boot because I don't think windows will access my Users directory because they have been moved over to the new drive. What I can only do will have to be via the command prompt.

I can't make a mklink for Users because I get an error saying something about duplicate areas? What I was trying to do is go to this Real\update directory but even trying to access that directory via cd commands will not work, giving me a access denied. You probably just can't move your program files due to the possibility of config files and registry entries that are looking for your programs on the c drive since that's where they where installed. They should be reinstalled if you want to move them. Also if you move the profiles folder (under c:\user) it will break your profiles and you will need to change the location in the registry. I suggest that you put everything back and just move your personal files, music, pics, & videos on another drive. That should free up a lot of space.

My question is even though I used /MOV command why it is not copied and deleted from the source?

Please suggest..

A:Robocopy /MOV command copying but not deleting from source directory

I created folders Test and Test2 on drive E:, copied some files over and under two years old and tested with command

Code:
robocopy E:\Test E:\Test2 /e /mov /minage:730
Works perfect. All files older than 730 are moved, copied to destination and deleted from source. I can only think of two possible causes for your issue:System considers files to be newer than 730 days old
A syntax error in your command
Please run the command, take screenshot of the last part of summary (under the dotted line, highlighted in screenshot below) and post it here.

Open a command prompt, go to c:/, type "tree | clip" (wait a minute for the prompt to come back), open a new notepad file, press Ctrl-V, save the file, and e-mail it to me at johnhardy926 a.t. yahoo com. Thanks.

I was in a file explorer window, and accidentally moved a folder on the left hand tree up into another folder.
(I HATE tapping. I didn't mean to do a button press.) I then lost the desktop background image. It's black now, but everything else seems okay. I can't figure out which directory got moved, as it happened so fast. The background image is right where it should be, in the folder C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Device Stage

I'm not going to dare turn this computer off like this. Who knows what might happen at boot up.

I'll have to compare this with a non-corrupted file structure listing. I'll use a compare utility on the two files, which will hopefully reveal the problem within a few minutes of reading it.

Hi all

I'm having a few problems following a couple of weeks of attacks whilst on the internet. My son experienced the same thing whilst on Facebook and my daughter too on another apparently harmless shopping site.

Basically we got a pop-up window preporting to be from Microsoft that suddenly launched and that looked like a virus checker as it had a box saying it had found all sorts of problems on the hard drives and that the world would end soon. This was followed by more pop-ups saying things like windows couldn't find the hard disc drive, memory was full etc. all quite scary to the uninitiated.

I promptly did nothing that might agrevate the situation and phoned one of the IT guys at work who said he had seen it a few times in the business and recommended a dose of Rkill and Combofix. This appeared to work sweetly and all was peaceful in the house hold until yesterday when it happened on my laptop once more. Feeling (inappropriately) confident following the previous episode I set about the usual process but this time was left with a completely black desktop and solitary IE shortcut plus the widgets.

I then tried to restore the system to previous point a few days earlier which appeared to work fine until I tried to open a fie when I discovered that Windows Explorer could not "see" the files and subdirectories. I believe the information is still there as if I click on Start/Computer it shows the two drives E and C to be full to what I remember as be... Read more

About 3 weeks ago, I was in the middle of transferring a large number of files via USB with a program called MP3 Library when the system locked up. At the time I was running Win98SE with a 160GB HD with 8 partitions. When I rebooted, the C: drive directory was trashed & unbootable. I checked the drive in another machine to recover what I could, but eventually gave up on reinstalling as it was too far gone. In the process of transferring the drive from from a Win2000 machine and back to the original machine, two other partitions also suffered corruption on several occasions. I eventually wiped the C: drive, formatted with NTFS and installed win2000SP3. The system crashed on a reboot after I had just finished all of the critical update downloads, again with a completely trashed C: drive! I have since reinstalled 3 times, including 7-8GB of other software. At random times I find errors on two other partitions after a reboot. I now have a tape backup of the current C: drive image in case it happens again. The HD is only 6months old and has no bad sectors. I don't know how I managed it, but I have completely disordered my Windows 7 directory structure. Whereas the default structure is to have the five distinct folders -- Favorites, Libraries, Homegroup, Computer, and Network -- I now have only two, Favorites and Desktop. Now, the Favorites consists of Libraries, Downloads, and Recent Places, with everything else contained under Desktop, including the true Desktop. In addition, there is now also a copy of the Control Panel. Maybe that's always been there, but I've never noticed it before. I normally would have to go to the Start Menu to access the Control Panel. Nothing catastrophic has happened yet, but I can't imagine there won't be consequences eventually.

Can I simply create new libraries, give them the appropriate names, move the true Desktop back to Favorites where it belongs, move everything else back to its appropriate folder, and delete the false Desktop? Or will any reorganization have to be done using system tools in order for the system to acknowledge the changes?

A:Need to return to the default Windows 7 directory structure

Open an Explorer window to whatever folder you like. Upon the top open the "Organize" menu > then click on "Folder and search options" > from there, near the bottom "Navigation pane" > "Show all folders" uncheck it > Ok. What you are seeing is merely a visual setting.

I ran across a system today that I need help understanding. I had to transfer user data from a crashed Windows system to a running system (by using the method of removing the crashed system's hard disk and copying its data). Both were running Windows XP and Outlook Express. It turned out there were two folders on the hard disk where Outlook Express was storing mail. They were:

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{568F06F5-377A-43E1-BE1D-50B73F0B4864}\Microsoft\Outlook Express
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{1C996A85-3FB1-443B-9066-E7170244AE64}\Microsoft\Outlook Express

The customer said there was only one Windows log-on name and I confirmed that by looking in the Documents and Settings folder. He also said that mail contained in each of the Outlook Express folders listed above were currently in use. I also confirmed that by looking at the time stamps on the Outlook DBX files and by examining the mails after I had imported them into the destination machine.

Here's the question: How does it happen there are two folders as listed above and both are currently in use?

As a designer in the 90've done a lot of CDs and later DVDs of all my work. And as you know almost all of the files that he wrote a lot of space on your hard drive. For this amount of data backed up I was using compression first and then the ZIP RAR. And now, when BD is relatively cheaper than the DVD I'm going to copy all my old albums (some have over 15 years) and rewrite on BD already uncompressed, so my program WhereIsIt? will be able to generate thumbnails of all these files. And the first part is easy, I copied all of those hundreds of CDs and DVDs on my hard drive, but how to extract all the files at the same time preserving the directory structure?

For Mac is a program Unarchiver which I used until recently, who can do it, but I can not find its counterpart on Windows. I can search all the archives on the disk and just open them, and they will unpack into place.
Maybe one of you can help me find a easy and a similar solution to accomplish this task on my Windows 7 PC? I've tried with Winrar Rarsoft, but there is no option to extract files to the original path. All I can do is to select each batch of files in a subdirectory and manually select "Extract Here", but I have millions of catalogs, many automatically generated by programs. After 2 hours of manual unpacking, I made the first mistake and I had to copy all the data from CD again, because I need to have all my data intact.

Help?

It should be a simple problem to fix.  I was trying to download a portable program to an external drive (Seagate Free Agent).  I tried to make a new folder on the fly and XP wouldn't allow it.  I got stuck in some kind of loop trying unsuccessfully to name the folder and then cancel took me back to rename again.  Finally I cancelled the download, but folders on the external harddrive were gone.  The disk still shows 100+ GB used out of 250GB total.  I see recommendations for Recuva and Testdisk as good for file recovery.  But I didn't delete any files and nothing has been written to the disk yet.  Are either of these programs best to restore the folder and file directories?  Or maybe some other fix.

Ok this is in the wrong forum.  Any way to move it to XP?

A friend of mine was working in windows explorer and has somehow managed to move his Desktop directory. Although Vista still loads and can use the laptop ok, it has a strange directory structure.

He has one username with admin rights (john).

The Desktop directory structure is now

c:\Users\John\Cookies\Desktop

normally this would be

c:\Users\John\Desktop

On Vista cookies is a symbolic link (to where?) and cannot be accessed.

I have got round this by creating a new user in control panel but would like to try and correct the existing directory structure if possible.

Thanks in advance.

Hardware is Acer Travelmate 55220 running Vista Home Premium

A:Directory Structure Problem - Vista Home Premium

Cookies are at: %userprofile%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Cookies\Low

If you can get into the "John" user profile, just go to the Desktop folder (in the above folder), right click on it and select Properties. Then select the location tab and move the folder back to it's correct location.

Please I need help, this is actually a question for an unoficial patch for a
game. It asks me to do this:

"To install the patch extract this archive into the game folder using
options that keep directory structure and dates intact and overwrite
files of the same name. Removing is only possible by reinstallation."

How do I find these " keep directory structure " and "dates intact" options?

I use Winrar by the way.

Does anyone know of a third party build of robocopy or an alternate command line copy utility that has similar features but integrates Smart Copy for handling Junctions Symlink and Hardlinked files ?

I have several programs that use a unusual virtual filesystem architecture that relies heavily on hard-links. I generally use robocopy for backing up my data drive since it skips existing files and reduces the time it takes to copy the drive. the only problem is that i found out that robocopy corrupts these because junctions are copied as folders and hard linked files are copied multiple times i can exclude junctions however this means there are missing paths on the destination drive.

Right now i am looking for a command line utility that can function similarly to robocopy in that it supports mirror mode and will skip existing files but that includes a Smart Copy functionality so that junctions and sym/hardlinks are properly copied with their correct relations

Please respond soon this is a major issue for me as i currently have several directory structures which I cannot back up with my current tools

A:Robocopy Build or Alternative with Smart Copy Support???

Don't these programs have their own backup utilities? If I remember correctly, copying some of these links won't help with restoring on a new machine or disk as they refer to disk block address on the original hard drive.
If the software doesn't have its own backup routine, perhaps you could use image backup. I use R-drive image which can do automatic incremental image backups on a live system, so no need to remember to do anything. I've also used SyncToy and SyncbackPro, if you want a sync program, and I think these have command line versions if you find the GUI too easy and really like lots of typing...

I heard robocopy/fastcopy/richcopy is much faster due to multi threaded (high queue depth) copying so I wanted to give it a try.

thing is going through cmd typing all folder directories as well as at times unable to type everything due to Chinese and Korean characters in a lot of my files/folders I find it impossible to make this work. I wanted to replace window context menu default "cut, copy and paste", or at least add new context menu for it for robocopy.

means if I just right click on the files, it'll have window copy, cut and robo copy, cut and when i right click empty space for paste it'll have window paste, and robo copy paste.

this way I dont have to worry about typing everything and use of this becomes realistically faster.

just where and how do I start?

A:add, or replace copy, cut, paste with robocopy in context menu?

Robocopy was never intended to replace the traditional copy/ paste function. It's a strict folder copier...not file copier. The best way to use it is for backups from a. BAT file.

I want to copy the contents of pen drive to E drive. The pendrive drive is F. Now i want all the folders and files to have the same date it was as in the pen drive, when i stored .
Normally when i copy, all the files retain original date but folders get todate. Meaning less if date specific creation of folder is needed.
I heard that robocopy feature in command would give me a way to it. Reading in microsoft or in other forums, including in this forum would not solve my problem. as it is total technical in nature of using switches in command.
My specific need is date of the folders and folder in the pendrive F to be copied to E: in one new folder, say Eendrive copy .
Dcopy is one of the sub command. I want total command for this . There may be experts in this commands. Please let me know , how to accomplish this. The command help of microsoft only know to the tech experts, who knows all /\ switches. As a newbie to this subject, i do not know how to issue the command prompt command.

Hmm; Normally any backup software would do this for you.

If you had a secondary copy (say other media to which you did a copy), then this would be a snap.

It sounds as if you only have the original media and you need to recover "whatever is possible".

Hi,

I am trying to copy stub files for migrated/archived data in an attempt to mirror an HSM server. More detail: stub files are 4k each in size and reside on a production server, there are thousands; these files need to be copied to a mirrored server at another site.

When I attempt to copy these stub files using Arcserve, ROBOCOPY, or just plain old drag n drop, the copy faill. Typically the error message states the files are not accessible.

I am being told by the HSM software vendor, Caminosoft, that I need software that can copy files at the BLOCK level, instead of the file level.

Anyone know of software that can copy files at the BLOCK level?

Any feedback would be appreciated.

HI

With the command prompt of Windows 7 SP1, how do I delete a directory structure with their files without deleting the name of the root directory?

THANKS

BYE

A:Deleting a directory structure without deleting the name of the root

So you want to delete the contents of a folder without deleting the folder itself? Would that also include sub-folders within that folder?

Simply enter cd <path to directory> at the prompt to make the required directory the target of the next command. Then, after verification that this is the correct directory and that you do indeed want to remove its contents, enter del *.* at the prompt. This should delete its contents, but not the directory itself. Please note that content cannot be easily recovered, which is why I asked you to verify the location first.
