I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi to all, i have a laptop running Windows 7 Professional. The problem is strange and havent had it on any other Windows 7 machine.

If i click the folder icon on the bottom tool bar (windows explorer) then in the left hand pane expand the C drive then right click on any folder it instantly displays a dialog saying Explorer has experienced a problem and needs to close, windows is
looking for a fix for this problem (cant remember exact wording) then Explorer.exe restarts. This happens on the local C drive and Network drives.
I though it could be a permissions problem so have taken ownership of all files & folders on the C drive which made no difference, i have removed the laptop from our server / domain and it is still the same / no change.
Can anyone shed any light on this problem or offer any ideas on fixing it? the laptop is only a few months old and is i5 / 4GB RAM Dell machine running Windows 7 Pro SP1 office 2003 Pro, checked for virus & adware & all clean.

A:Explorer.exe crashes when righ click on item in left pane on windows explorer nothing in system logs, explorer.exe restarts.

The faulting module (Fault Module Name: SHELL32.dll) shell32.dll is a Windows system file however the file that is actually causing the crash may be a third party file which from the symptoms
may be a third party context menu handler.
The following link has some info and a download to ShellExView which you can use to selectively disable third party context menu handlers to find out a problematic one:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/slowrightclick.htm
You could try disabling all non-Microsoft context menu handlers and then, if the problem resolves, re-enable them one at a time to see which one was the problem.
BTW, the error should be logged in the Event Viewer Application log as a Application Error involving explorer.exe

This happened recently after my sister downloaded something from the internet, and when I opened the folder to transfer it to her flash drive, a notification popped up telling me that, "Windows Explorer has crashed," and then it restarts (not the computer, just explorer. It sort of "refreshes" the desktop), then loads, and then crashes again.

I can still use my laptop normally from adjacent accounts, and when I tried deleting the file (the source of all of this, I'm assuming) it says that I need the permission of my main account, even though this account that I am currently using is also and administrator.

Can someone give me a little help? If there is none to be found I can use this side account for a while until something can be done, but it is incredibly inconvenient.

I am using Windows 7 currently.

I first noticed that explorer would crash a few weeks ago after I stumbled across an infected .wmf file while surfing the net. I was logged in under my limited account and my anti-virus detected the .wmf but it could not take action, I believe due to the fact I use system restore. I finally was able to delete the .wmf after which I ran several different scans and could not detect anything except Microsoft (R) HTML Application host had been altered (24,576 bytes to 24,064 bytes), so I replaced the file (note: explorer was already crashing before this point). The only time it seems to crash is once in a while when I click on My Document, Control Panel, My Pictures etc...

Hi this just started happening today. I'm not sure what happened to trigger it. I have run virus scan and it didn't found any infected files.

Explorer.exe will load when my machine starts up. About every 5-10 seconds, it will close, meaning my desktop blinks off. Another 10 seconds later (or around that) explorer.exe will start again and my desktop will come back.

Eventually, it stops trying to load and the desktop stays off. I can go to task manager and run explorer.exe to repeat the process of having explorer.exe run, stop, run, etc.

I don't receive any error messages when this happens.

This machine has the latest Microsoft updates incl service pack 2.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

When Firefox is closed, Explorer continues to crash and restart, almost every 30-35 seconds. I have Windows 8.1 up to date, with all the latest updates, FireFox is up to date. As of writting this post, Windows Explorer has crashed and restarted (5) times.

My explorer.exe constantly crashes and restarts; however, when I go into safe mode it works perfectly which means it is a driver problem. So I began to use the app, DriverView, to look at all the drivers I have and sure enough I find 3 very suspicious files that are most likely the cause to my problem.They looked suspicious because their file type was listed as unknown and their description was blank.the three files were:dump_dumpata.sysdump_dumpfve.sysdump_msahci.sysThey are said to be located at C:\Windows\System32\Drivers but when I looked there i couldn't find them. I tried scanning for viruses in normal and safe mode using AVG but I found nothing. I then uninstalled AVG and installed Avira. I also scanned in normal and safe mode using Avira but I still found nothing. The virus blockers i used also were updated. For some reason I just can't findi them. I am working on my sister's computer and she said she had trouble with IE11 (Windows 7). I now see it. I cannot navigate to save my life. I thought from what she described, she was needing her Java updated along with Flash player. I cannot even update either one. It tells me that file was not downloaded, retry.

I switched over to Firefox and everything went like clockwork. So, she really wants to use Internet Explorer. I researched and Google searched to no good answers. There was a "Microsoft 'Fix It'" but of course since I cannot download it, it does me no good.

I thought, well, I will just uninstall IE11 and resort back to IE10...Nope, same problem....

Any help would be great.

Hello,

After days of troubleshooting via trying resolution methods from various forums, I finally have to submit a help topic, because I am out of ideas short of re-installing windows.

explorer.exe crashes whenever I do one of the following items:
- Right click on desktop to see display properties; the right-click menu never comes up; explorer just crashes. (I can get to the display properties fine through control panel.)
- Open up Start/Programs and enter an application sub-menu. Explorer doesn't crash until the sub menu opens, sometimes instantly, sometimes in a few seconds.
- Hovering over an icon on my desktop. Explorer does not crash when hovering over shortcuts, only when I hover over a file sitting on the desktop.
- Trying to open My Computer. A window opens up and the flashlight appears momentarily, then explorer crashes, which also closes the window.
- Trying to browse files via Start/Run or through Task Manager. Explorer crashes after several seconds, regardless of which drive or directory I am browsing. There may be an additional pattern there too as the time it takes explorer to die varies, but I have yet to determine a pattern if there is one. For Start/Run, the window closes, for task manager, sometimes the window freezes when explorer crashes and restarts, and the task manager icon in the task bar never goes away until I pass over it with my mouse.
- Trying to open up administrative tools from the control panel. Other controal panel options ... Read more

Hello,

So for the past month or so, explorer.exe has been crashing continuously. It happens on several occasions...

-Most notable when I first boot up Windows 7, it crashes and restarts in an assiduous manner, for maybe 10-15 times until it stops suddenly and starts working again

-When accessing files which force explorer to open, e.g. when I open a document, open the 'My Downloads' folder, and such locations (the crashing and restarting scenario occurs in every situation)

I haven't found a solution as of yet. I even tried ending the process in Task Manager and running it again... with the result of it continuing to freeze and restart even after I run it form Task Manager, until as usual, it suddenly stops crashing and starts working again.

Is there any possible solution to this which doesn't involve any type of System Restore/OS wipe?

Thanks in advance.

P.S. PC is defragged, registry and junk files cleaned using CCleaner and Disk Cleanup, issue still persists. SpyBotS&D cannot detect any malware, and ESET NOD32 cannot detect any viruses or infections either.

A:explorer.exe crashes and restarts when certain actions are performed

This is usualy caused by a bad file filter installed in explorer. And you can usualy trace it down to what type by noticing what files are in the folders you are opening.

Unless this happens at the default "libraries" or "Computer" entries as well...

Can you shed any light on where it does and maybe does not crash?

Did you install anything (Codecs, Office programs etc) just before this started?

This issue has been driving me nuts for the past few months and I've found no solution as yet.

I have had an on going issues with Vista crashing and then restart, some times it does it so quick that I hardly notice it because it was just the OS restarting not the computer rebooting. The how and why Vista would restart was unknown though I do remember a couple of times I would get a media player error but that was not consistant.

However, now the error is consistant and I can replicate it. On certain files, when I would RIGHT Click on the file to look their property Vista will crash and after scanning itself, restart up. At first I have not paid attention to the files in question but today I noticed that when I went to look at the properties for Gas Powered Games' Dungeon Siege 2, because it crashes every time I try to start it (I just reinstalled the game yesterday and while I ran into an online issue, was able to play the single player version fine but today when I tried to start the game it won't start and crashes).

I did two searches under Vista restarting and Vista restarting when Right Clicking properties and after reading the 75 results, there were a few threads that had very similar issues but they were locked and none of them had an answer.

So, let's try it again, anyone got a clue about this issue?

My system is an ACER, that I keep updated with Microsoft Update and protected by AVG as well as the Microsoft utilities.

Are you sure its not just Windows Explorer crashing? I don't see how the OS could restart but not the computer. Try typing sfc /scannow into your start menu. This will check you system files and repair them if they are indeed damaged.

I have Windows 8.1 running on my Acer Aspire V3-772G. Windows explorer crashes randomly, and restarts instantly. Various solutions on the internet are for problems where explorer crashes due to a specific task such as accessing some programs. In my case, it is just random and occurs once in a while. I have run spyware/malware programs and can find nothing wrong in the logs. What should I be looking for? Is my flash player needing an update, or a newer service pack for Microsoft needed? I am not I.T. savy and am looking for feedback.

Thanks very much!!

Hello,
I am trying to run a few different repairs but they all require me to right click and then run as admin. My problem is that if I right click any Icon or desktop anything explorer crashes and restarts. I can not find any way to give myself admin access. I am the admin of the computer and logged in under my account but it does not matter what account I log in under it always crashes. Is there any other way to run the CMD sfc /scannow?
Thanks

A:Problem- Right click on anything and explorer crashes and restarts

Hello Dave84 Welcome to the Seven Forums!

You can start up the System File Checker tool at the Start>Run command line. (refer to image attached)

That won't require any right clicking on anything. You could even add the Takeownership option to the right click menu but will need to first repair the present Windows installation since this sounds like one or more system files are corrupted.

The other thought on this is a possible malware infection leaving you with corrupted files like the explorer.exe sheil file used by Windows Explorer as well as the Computer desktop icon for browsing drives.

Hi. Today morning I started my PC and just after the start up Windows Explorer crashed and restarted and then did (and does) the same every 10-15 seconds. I googled the problem and did following steps (not in the same order as below) which didn't resolve the issue:

- restarted few times and switched off PC completely;
- tried to fix registry with Vit Registry Fix;
- did SFC /SCANNOW and it finished with information that some issues couldn't be fixed;
- ran Malwerbytes with no malware found;
- did a full Kaspersky Internet Security scan with no viruses found;
- did a clean boot (all non-windows services were not used) and it still crashed;
- did a diagnostic start up (so only basic windows services were used) and it helped;
- I wanted to do a system restore but Windows doesn't have data on any restores, meaning I probably haven't started the service (doesn't it make it automatically?);

Other info:
- system works fine in Safe Mode and diagnostic start up, thus eliminating issue with external applications;
- when in normal mode and crashing I looked at processes appearing and disappearing and found out that at the crash process the file dllhost.exe disappears then and shortly after appears back (it may or may not be relevant);
- I didn't do any major updates yesterday (only updated Steam platform and installed one new game);
- I can't do perfmon /report as in Safe mode it doesn't display anything and in normal mode I don't have enough time to start the applicati... Read more

A:Windows explorer crashes (and restarts) on system start-up.

Just an update - based on my experience with "fixing" the system, I've decided to back up the data and make a fresh installation (no point in loosing more time on trying to resolve the issue but just spend the time on new system and at least enjoy a faster Windows for some time). Funny though that a year ago I had to do the same due to some dll corrupt file (it was much worse then). I really love Microsoft!

P.S. Thanks for reading this thread, if you think you may add something (so in the future if someone looks for info on how to fix it) feel free to add some advice.

Ok, im having problems when i try to install Windows Xp pro. I been using it since it came and never had problems, but now after i decided to format my pc after been some time since my last format (also was acting kind of slugish), the typing cursor blinks super fast, the time clock on the desktop goes very fast too, each minutes goes as if it were seconds, when i do the ctrl+alt+del to see the cpu usage, its always at 100%, the light at the pc tower that shows when the hard disk is reading/writing blinks very fast, and if i try to double click an icon on the desktop nothing happens, the only way to open the icon or make it work is by right clicking on it. I even reformated hoping for the problem to be solved and still got the very same problem. I was forced to install a copy of Windows Me i happened to have on the mean time. Any ideas or any clue what could be wrong?

Hiya-Hello. (Osu, I feel bad, two topics on BC right off the bat. Too many computer problems. Sorry for the somewhat spamming.)

I'm in the process of trying to repair my good friend's laptop.
EDITED: It's a Compaq: Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005,HP, Presario V600.

__
Here is the problem: The laptop starts up and shows the main "Compaq" screen. With the press Esc for setup, and so forth.
If you try to run Windows normally, you get a lovely blue-screen of death.
Safe mode is the same.
And last know good configuration, also gives a blue screen.

Here is another issue. I do not even have a second to read the error message when the laptop will restart.
__
I want to know if I can find a way to view the message without tweaking the Control Panel (I can not reach it.)
And, if this is a driver or hardware issue, that can, or can not be fixed.

Anyway, thank you for checking out my topic, and for any assistance you can provide me with. : )

Just today I was playing music from a YouTube playlist and I noticed that suddenly the bottom part of the taskbar and the upper part of the Chrome window (where all the tabs are) kept blinking: the icons on the taskbar disappeared, and instead it was blue and the windows icon on the right kept blinking on and off. The upper part of the Chrome window began blinking between inactive and active (darker and lighter). When I minimized all the windows open my wallpaper was instead just completely blue, with all the icons gone and the taskbar still blinking. I also received a bizarre error message along the lines of "random-string-of-letters-and-numbers could not access the memory of other-random-string-of-letters-and-numbers". Overall I wasn't really able to do anything in this state once the windows had closed out, because the windows button no longer worked and all the icons were gone.

I tried shutting down my computer and restarting it, which seemed to work at first until I tried playing the music again, at which point the whole process repeated with more error messages I couldn't fully understand. I restarted it again, and decided to not play any videos this time since that seemed to trigger it. So far it hasn't occurred again.

What I'm wondering is what's causing this, and if it's even possible to fix it. My immediate thought was a weird one-time error, but after it happened twice in a row I suspected malware. Except th... Read more

Hi,

I have a computer with the following characteristics:
Asus P5Q motherboard,
Intel Core 2 Duo processor,
4 GB RAM,
graphic card NX8800GT video card
2 Maxtor SATA hard drives
1 SATA DVD burner
The system was installed 14 months ago with Windows XP Pro. A few months ago, it started crashing, not when I was working on it, and I found it with a black screen and a blinking cursor in the top left of the screen (a cursor like an underscore).

Along the time, it was crashing more and more often: I was turning it on in the morning, the evening it was still fine, but during the night it would crash... and again each day.

At that stage I wasn't sure if it was a hardware or a software problem. But last week-end, I installed Windows 7 on it, with an installation from scratch. And guess what, it crashes again, and even more often: today it crashed after less than 2 hours.

I clearly don't know where to start investigating... Do you have any idea to help me?

Thanks,

Patrick

I also noticed everytime I turned it on it would ask me Press F1 to run Bios Set up which would bring me to the bios so I could manually set it up or F2 run Default configuration for Bios I always pressed F2. so I talked to my Stepdad cause I have never encountered this and he told me to check that the battery and that maybe the computer needed a format. so I tried the format but now here comes the problem as I tried to format it using the Windows Disc to erase the Operating system it wont let ... Problem: sometimes the pc simply crash-restarts, no error messages or warnings. Most often happens when playing an on-line computer game, "Eve Online." The screen goes black and the pc re-boots.

A PC Doctor diagnostic test shows my cpu (Athlon 64) failing three tests:

AMD FPU Test
AMD MMX Test
AMD SSE Test

Error Message for above tests (comes up during PC Doctor test): "Virtual Device Driver format in regsistry is invalid." This error message is a windows pop-up box, NOT a PC Doctor result message.

HP Tech Support online chat says the cpu is screwed and needs to be replaced. Anyone have any other opnions? Thx!

A:PC crashes & restarts

See if you get a error message by turning the Automatic Restart OFF.
How to turn off Automatically Restart

Click Start then right click My Computer choose Properties
Then Advanced tab
Under Startup & Recovery click Settings
Under System failure uncheck Automatically Restart
Click OK.

Now the Error message should stay up so you can read it.

Over heating or Video Card or both is a likely cause.

Morning/Afternoon All.

I have a system that runs on windows 7 home premium 64bit SP1, its primarily a storage server but also handles time consuming tasks (and some folding while it idles :D ) .

However for a month or two is has been restarting randomly every day or two. (not a clean shut-down from what i can tell).
I log in to check on it or do something and i'm back at the logon screen instead of the lock screen I usually leave it on.

A Look into the event viewer shows the error as the vague "kernal power - The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly."

This error has been getting on my nerves and I thought I better start heavily looking into it this weekend before it creates worse problems like file-system corruption.
