Headphone sometimes wont work unpredictably?

Q: Headphone sometimes wont work unpredictably?

Hey there.

Recently I have upgraded to Windows 10.

I am experiencing an issue where sometimes when I plug in my headphones, there will be no audio coming from them even when Im playing music on the computer.

The music always plays fine from the speakers.
The music always plays fine from headphones when I'm using a USB DAC.
The music always played fine in Windows 8.1 before this through headphones..
The music always plays fine in Linux, my dual boot along side Windows 10.

My headphones for sure work as all my other devices and OSes are fine with it.
My hardware is fine as everything work(s/ed) fine for Linux and Windows 8.1.
My computer always recognizes the headphones when I plug them in, but won't always play audio through them.

Restarting the computer does not always fix the issue, but rebooting into Linux then back into Windows 10 always fixes the issue.

I have tried 3 different sets of audio drivers; Windows 8.1, Windows 10 and Windows Generic Drivers for my device (Eurocom M4). The problem persists in all of them.

I have updated my BIOS to a Windows 10 supported one my manufacturer provided. It didn't help.

It isn't malware for sure as this has been happening since the OS was newly installed.

It persists with all headphones, not just one pair.

Anyone have any possible idea how to fix this issue? I've tried everything I could.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi,

I am using a HP envy x2 nootbook and running windows 8.1 x64 bit op. system. I just reinstalled windows and since then the headphone jack's are not working. Nor the one on the keybord part and nor the one on the tablet one. I used headphones with 4-conductor connector like my Iphone 6S headphone jack. As I assume my divice manager does not note anything wrong. Could it be a driver problem? Or a hadrver problem?

It's quite possible sufficient damage was done, either by the plug getting stuck or the work in removing it, that the contacts inside the jack have been forced into cutting the speakers circuits off as happens when plugging into it. From the number of Notebooks I've had to junk and take apart first I'd say the only real solution is a new motherboard or a new Notebook. If it were a Desktop one can disable the onboard audio system and get an Add-in Sound card. Or maybe try the USB type speakers.

Hi there, I have a P50 notebook and I am trying to plug my external speakers to it using the jack. It work fine with an array of headsets including Bose and Apple, all with P3 connectors. I am using a P3 connector AUX cable, but no sounds come out on the other side. I have tested cable for continuity and it seems to be fine. Speaker Properties on Windows 10, General tab, Jack information says "L R Analog Jack" Any ideas?

Hey everybody,

I bought the headsets. They've got a microphone as well.

Now I've got three ports: pink, green and this colorless one.

My regular speakers go in the colorless port, while the headphone microphone goes into the pink one and the headset speakers.

The thing is speakers on the headsets, as well as my regular speakers worked, but the microphone on the headsets didn't, so I tried to fix the problem, and eventually did, that is the microphone works, but the speakers on the headsets don't !

However, by inserting the headphone's speakers into the colorless port (where my regular speakers are put), in that case the headphones work, but why don't they work when I pluck them in the green port? Previously, when the microphone didn't work, the headphone's speakers worked, but after I 'fixed' the microphone problem, the headphone's speakers stopped working.

Please help me, as this is of great importance, and I've been trying to fix this problem for several hours.

A:Headphone mic didn't work - now it does, but headphone speakers don't

That colorless port might be for input devices, that does not include headphones. I had the same problem with my audigy 2 zs, had to plug my headset into a speaker port, its really the only way to get them to work, unless you have front panel ports for headphones.

None of my games will work. I took some advice of a forum because I couldnt get Perfect World to work and changed something in the registry to do with the port. Now no game will work and i would change it back but i dont know what it was previously.
My system restores wont work, wont even undo, and theres only one days worth there now. I dont know how to do a utilities reg scan which I think may be what I need to do, I dont know if its in my pc or on my XP disk. I cant use the disk because I dont know how to find my product code and the person I bought it off has gone to Cyprus .

I've done a Drwebcureit but really I need instructions for a 2 year old and I think this has happened since my last one. I had a Win32 Trojan in the other day and Vundo got rid of it I think, maybe its got something to do with that, maybe its still lurking around. Ive done a Combofix amd this was at the top - WARNING -THIS MACHINE DOES NOT HAVE THE RECOVERY CONSOLE INSTALLED. If anyone can help me, you would save my life, its driving me mad now.

I had the same issue, and I resolved as you recommended. However mi headphones are not working yet.
I have already tried others and nothing
What else could I do?

Hello. I apologize for the delay in answering -- I have fallen behind a bit.
Try switching to the Windows native audio driver and see if the headphones work. If it does then the Realtek audio driver is buggy. If it does not work with either the Realtek driver or the native driver then probably hardware failure. In that case contact tech support if you are still under warranty. If not then get an inexpensive usb audio jack.
1. Open the Device Manager (find it in the Control Panel, or type devmgmt.msc into the search box).2. Expand the "Sound, video & game controllers" and right click on "Realtek High Definition Audio".3. Select to "Update Driver Software".4. Click on "Browse my computer for driver software".5. Click "Let me pick from a list of drivers on my computer".6. Put a check in the box "Show compatible hardware" if not already checked.7. In the list of devices, click "High Definition Audio" (the native driver).8. Click "Next".9. On the Update Driver Warning box, click "Yes" (install the driver). 10. Restart the laptop if prompted. If not prompted, then no need to restart.[To get back to the Realtek driver, do it again but reverse the names in steps 2 and 7.]

Hello everyone.
Recently, my microphone (which is attached to my headset) stopped working.

I have this headset:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826153043

I have this motherboard:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131366

A few days ago, I updated to windows 7 64 bit. I installed new drivers when I did that, including audio drivers. The next day or so, I noticed my mic wasn't working.

I had gotten the new drivers from the Asus website (the motherboard manufacturer), and they were just an updated version of the old ones I had.
However, now, I am getting no input on my mic whatsoever. It recognizes that they are plugged in, but no sound goes through (my friends don't hear anything I'm saying). It's not a volume issue: no words are being transmitted whatsoever.

It could be coincidence - the headphone might have finally just broke on me, but I'm suspicious. I think the driver may have something to do with it. I tried reinstalling the drivers, but that did not do anything, I still have the same issue.

The driver is called "VIA HD Audio Deck." Like I said, when I plug it in, it recognizes the mic has been plugged in, but no sound is transmitted.

Do you guys think my mic is broken, and I should start shopping for a new one, or is it a driver problem? If so... what on earth should I do to try and fix it?

PS: Yes, the headphones still work, just not the attached mic.

A:Headphone mic will not work anymore :(

Is what ever software you're using set up to use the mic correctly? Some software you need to manually select where the mic is in the audio options.

Hi, I'm a newbie and please be gentle. My vista home premium (2007), from dell, has been freezing up recently. Sometimes it does so immediately after I open a program--it seems to happen more often when I'm connecting online via IE or Firefox, but sometimes it works fine for several minutes or even longer before it freezes. Usually I can't get anything to respond or react in anyway, so I simply power off and restart.I have used the windows diagnostics (f12 key) when starting: no problems reported. I have used ccleaner multiple times.I have used malware antibytes, with no problems identified.I have gone into 'msconfig' and stopped lots of programs from starting automatically at startup. It seems to be doing better, not happening as often, but I'm still getting the 'freeze up' nearly every time I use the computer.Thank you in advance for any help you can give me.MaryHere's a log file from hijack this:Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2Scan saved at 3:07:41 PM, on 2/21/2010Platform: Windows Vista SP1 (WinNT 6.00.1905)MSIE: Internet Explorer v8.00 (8.00.6001.18882)Boot mode: NormalRunning processes:C:\Windows\system32\taskeng.exeC:\Windows\system32\Dwm.exeC:\Windows\Explorer.EXEC:\Program Files\DellTPad\Apoint.exeC:\Windows\System32\WLTRAY.EXEC:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8\avgtray.exeC:\Windows\Syst... I have a headset set with a mic. It has 3.5mm plugs for the mic and the speakers. Just recently they stopped working together. What I mean is if I have either one of them plugged in, that one works. If I have both plugged in, the sound manager appears as if neither of them are plugged in. I've tried other headphones with the jacks and get the same result. I've tried reinstalling the driver, doing a system restore and using CCleaner to clean my registry. I've also messed around with just about every setting in the audio manager. Anyone have any ideas? It's odd that they work independently, which leads me to believe that the insertion detection is working just fine.

What steps have you done?
What sound card?
What headset and mic you have?
Have you looked in the control panel under sound and see what is selected as your microphone and speakers?
In Control Panel, System, Device Manager do you see any exclamation points on the list of hardware devices?
Are you sure you have the plugs in the correct ports of the MB?
Do you have the latest MB Bios for your sound chip (if on MB)

Any information will be helpful to help you correct your problem.

HP TouchSmart IQ506
Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit
------------------------------------------------
About a year ago, my TouchSmart hard drive crashed, so I took it to FutureShop and had it replaced. I was able to put all of my data back on, because it was backed up, but i noticed that my audio did not work correctly. All they had done was put Vista back on to it, so I didn't have the TouchSmart software or Realtek HD Audio Manager like I used to.

Anyways, the main problem is that once I unplug my headphones, I cant use them again until I restart the program I'm using. For example, say I have my headphones plugged in and I start Firefox. The sound will play through the headphones just fine, and if I unplug them the sound will play through the speakers just fine, but when I plug them back in, the sound will continue to play through the speakers. The only way to get the headphones to work again is to close Firefox and reopen it with the headphones already plugged in.

What may be causing this and how can I fix it?

A:Headphone Jack Does Not Work Correctly

Hello and welcome to the forum.

When you bought the computer was the software already installed on the computer or did you install the software.

If you bought it with the software preloaded did you buy a set of recovery disk's also, if not you will need to get the recovery disk's or you can make a set if you have another computer to go to like maybe a friend. Here is a great tutorial...

A:X1 Carbon combo headphone/mic jack does not work

Hi Dave0888,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

As per your query we understood that you are facing the issue with Audio port on ThinkPad X1 Carbon.

Please set the default setting on Realtek High Definition audio application from control panel.
If you are unable to find the application or set the application, please download the driver from Lenovo Support page and install it.

Also please download ThinkVantage System Update utility and install it, and after installing it please run the application so that it will check for the latest drivers and automatically install it.

After installing all the application please restart the system and check it once.

Below is the link to enter the downloads page and download latest application accordingly, please click on "Select Product" then in "QUICK PATH" enter the MTM no. select the exact model.

Hi guys, I have a HP tx2-1325au that I am refurbishing for a friend, all parts are working... except for the headphone out. Simply put, in Windows 7 Pro (64 bit) with the Realtek drivers from the official HP website, there will be no pop-up notification (and therefore no sound) when I plug in my headphones but there will be such a pop-up notification when I plug my mic into the mic port. The optical port is also working (tested with a Fiio D03K). But in Parted Magic, a Linux distro run from an USB drive, all three ports are working, meaning that the problem is not a hardware issue. I have tried Windows drivers from many sources but they did not solve the problem. Using the default Windows driver (i.e. uninstalled all Realtek drivers) did not resolve the issue either (a "Front Panel Jack" appears along with an "Internal ATAPI Jack"). Strangest part is that in Realtek drivers, the headphones out appear as a Recording device (either black or pink port) May I know how else can I solve this? Thanks!

I recently run into this problem. The first time I tried to use it, it seems that the green jack for my headphones doesn't work at all. Plug in any pair and they don't even recognize it being there, as seen in Control Panel.

What might be the problem? The case has a bad jack, or the connector on the motherboard?

A:Front input headphone jack does not work

Do you have any other headphone to try at the front jack?

Monitor w/ built in speakers is an HP f2105.

Windows 7 32bit

I turned my computer off for a week. The first time it's ever been off in 5 years. It has an onboard Realtek soundcard. It worked perfectly before leaving for vacation. I come back and there is no sound. Headphones work and the speakers work when plugged into the front panel headphone jack.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling drivers and making Onboard Sound Card "Enabled" in BIOS. Is it likely that the onboard sound just stopped working while being shut off or is there another underlying issue?

A:Speakers only work plugged into headphone jack

Will the headphones work when plugged into the back panel (green jack)?

I have to hold it to one side for it to work right, is there a way to fix it?

A:headphone jack is not working right, I have to hold it to work

Sounds like the jack is busted. That happens if you use them a lot. Any moment on the plug puts a lot of stress on the guts of the jack and on the little solder pads that hold it on the board. You might be able to reflow the solder joints if you feel like taking the notebook that far apart. Personally I would just buy an inexpensive USB sound dongle, under $4 from China, and be really careful of any jacks connected to the notebook moving forward.

Hi All, I have a HP ENVY Notebook - 17-k200na which runs Windows 10 with Beats Audio As of last night the laptop is refusing to play any sound via the built in speakers.Headphones work fine (both Bluetooth and wired) and it seems that the PC isn't recognising that the headphones have been removed. I'm not sure if its caused by a hardware or software issue. I have updated, uninstalled and reinstalled the sound drivers to no avail.  When searching this issue online most people advise a work around, in which in the playback devices settings you disable headphones and set speakers as default device. However, even with the most up to date drivers my speakers and headphones are displayed as 1 single device.  Further to this I have seen you can disable Jack detection in Realtek HD Audio Manager. Unfortunately, whenever i try and run HD Audio Manager the window immediately closes and Beats opens in its place. Beats Audio (at least my version) has next to no settings and this option is not available to me.  Any advice would be great. A link to a new version of Beats software could be advantageous if one exists. Any other work arounds also welcome.

Hi

It is a Win 7 system. The Creative headphone/mic combo worked fine on Vista.

I plug ii into Win7, the headphones work fine. The Mic doesn't work for system speech recognition. Keeps saying it doesn't hear anything. Wierd thing is that SKYPE works fine on the exact setup with the headphone/mic!

The headphone and mic both show up in the Sound control panel and ARE selected.

What am I missing?

I have tried a number of search terms here, but don't find this reported anywhere-- so here goes nothing:

The machine: HP Pavillion dv8000 (portable), x86, 512M RAM
OS: WIN XP Pro v.5.1.2600 SP2, build 2600

The issue:

I fire up the machine and go about my business. The system works with my chosen keystroke repeat rate (very high) which correctly works after the machine booted. Fine.

But at SOME point-- and it seems to have something to do with simultaneously having PhotoShop, Firefox, Wordpad and the imagining software from my Fuji digital camera open at the same time as Norton is running a "live update"-- all of a sudden the keystoke repeat rate "sets itself" to "snail's pace." I go to the control panel > keyboard and find that the slider control for the keystoke repeat rate is now all the way over to the left (super slow). I reset it to a fast rate, apply, and the system works normally again.... maybe for weeks, maybe for a few minutes.

I am yet to actually reproduce the conditions that cause this "quirk."

If I reboot the machine while the keystroke repeat rate is "slow" like this, the system comes back up with my "fast" preset.

I doubt this is a "security" issue... but it's certainly ANNOYING, when it happens.

Is there legitimate software that examines such things as keystroke rates, and "makes the determination" that it needs to be reset, in order for the software... Read more

This unexpected tab openening keeps occurring at random times, for www.software-updater.com  from Air Software, with documentation in the tab saying the software to download is from Google Chrome.    This is very suspicious to me.  How do I stop this unexpected tab from opening?  Is this something genuine from google chrome?  The tab will not close if I click on the x at the right side of the tab label; I need to use Task Manager to stop Google Chrome.

A:unexpected tab opens in Google Chrome, unpredictably

Something you downloaded and installed recently contained adware....a program or browser add-on.

Use the programs below to find and remove the adware. Use all of them.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here
Double-click mbam-setup-2.X.X.XXXX.exe to install the application (X's are the current version number).
Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
Once MBAM opens, when it says Your databases are out of date, click the Fix Now button.
Click the Settings tab at the top, and then in the left column, select Detections and Protections, and if not already checked place a checkmark in the selection box for Scan for rootkits.
Click the Scan tab at the top of the program window, select Threat Scan and click the Scan Now button.
If you receive a message that updates are available, click the Update Now button (the update will be downloaded, installed, and the scan will start).
The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
If potential threats are detected, ensure that Quarantine is selected as the Action for all the listed items, and click the Apply Actions button.
While still on the Scan tab, click the link for View detailed log, and in the window that opens click the Export button, select Text file (*.txt), and save the log to your Desktop.
The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can also be viewed by clicking the History tab and then selecting Application Logs.

Less than 2 weeks after the end of my 1-year warranty, my Lenovo Yoga 920 crashed. I've used Lenovo products for years and have recommended the Yoga 920 specifically to many of my coworkers, so when I experienced a hard crash (no blue screen, just a stuck image on screen) I assumed it was something Windows/Driver related. For the past two weeks I've been on a journey to try and resolve the issue but haven't had much luck. Below is a history of what I've experienced and what I've tried:Friday, August 2nd - Computer was plugged in and on, but not being used, when I found it unresponsive. I tried turning it back on and within 1-2 minutes of booting up, it would crash again. Any image on screen would remain on screen (sometimes with visual artifacts, sometimes without) and any music that was playing would be suspended indefinitely until I hard powered off.Booting the machine in Safe Mode would allow me to use the machine for any period of time - the 1-2 minutes before crash was only experienced under normal boot upSaturday-Wednesdays - No issuesWhatever was causing my crashes all Friday (until late in the night) was not causing it for the next several days. I used this time to back up my filesI used this time to verify I was on the latest version of Windows, that my drivers were up to date, and that neither Lenovo Bridge or Lenovo Diagnostics Windows found any errors with the machine.Wednesday, August 6th - Computer was plugged in and on, but not being used, and same as before, i... I have a studio xps 16 running vista 64-bit service pack 2. the other day i was on skype and skype mutes all other audio on the computer when on. i ended up uninstalling skype and my built in webcam because i read that together they sometimes screw up audio. so the next day i tried to listen to music, no luck. I ran a diagnostics and when it got to the colored bars and asked if i heard a beep I HEARD THE BEEP so that means the problem is a system problem and not a screwed up sound card. (i think) anyway i updated all of the drivers, the device manager has no ? marks. i talked to dell and the found a virus that MAY have been eating away at my registry. i got rid of that and still no audio. i didnt really wanna touch the regedit because im nervous cuz u can really f up a computer if your not sure what your doing. i also did a system reboot to about a week before it happened with no luck. by the way, under the device manager it says> Sound, video and game cotrollers and then my options are> ATI Function Driver for High Definition Audio - ATI AA01 and> IDT High Definition Audio CODEC

So any ideas guys? i dont wanna re-download the os and start over so what now??

Okay this is a VERY weird thing, and might be pretty confusing, I'll do my best to explain it clearly.

I have a headset w/ microphone (logitech) for voice chatting online. When its plugged all the way in I can't hear anything, I have to back it out slightly then I can hear but the connection is not good because it's not"clicked' in and I have to hold it in the right place, so not a good solution.

I CAN hear out of it when listening to a song with it all the way in so i thought it was a stereo/mono issue. I.e. can't hear when listening to a 'sound recorder' file or yahoo voice chat but CAN hear when llistening to music.

I also have another set of headphones without a mic for listening on my mp3 player. These headphones DO WORK for BOTH types of files. The plugs are EXACTLY the same, both have two black bands, ( i.e. both are stereo headphones) i have even measured the two plugs and spacing of the black bands, bboth EXACTLY the same.

And I've also tried this on more than one PC, my laptop and desktop and it's the same on both machines.

One other thing is that the headphone/mic set DID work initially but then the problem started later and i discovered that pulling the plug out slightly made it work. And now lots of head scratching later i'm completely dumbfounded by this.

has anyone else experienced this or have any idea what is causing this? I rather not have to buy a new headphone/mic set.

thanks in advance!

Hi

Several weeks ago I bought the new HP Pavillion dv9574ea notebook and the HEADPHONE SOCKETS do not work - there are two. Only the speakers work. Even when I put a working set of headphones which are the right size, I cannot hear anything through the hearphones. The normal loud speakers however keep working, although they should switch off when the headphones are plugged in.

Please see the screenshot of the drivers active (in system 32 folder) and other details about the headphone socket.

Thank you for any help.
