HP Deskjet 5550 series

Q: HP Deskjet 5550 series

When I print any document the printer feeds a page through the printing head but does not try to print anything. When trying to print a test page I get the message that the test page failed to print but a page is again fed through the printer. The printer status shows 'deleting' but does freezes in this status. I am running Windows XP Professional and have also been through the help actions but have been unable to solve the problem. Any ideas?

Thanks Dave

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

After installing a new black printer cartridge the paper jammed whilst the printer was finishing the test print. After clearing the paper the printer has now stopped working all together - just the paper feed light and the power light flash simultaneously when the printer is switched on.
Can anyone please help.

Make sure you got the whole sheet of paper out of the printer (even if it was in pieces). Sometimes even a small confetti-sized piece of paper can cause an error.

Does anyone have an HP deskjet 5550 printer?

I was given this printer bare with no install instructions, no cd,etc.
I already had a spare usb cable and i got the install instructions and drivers from HP. I installed this printer into a spare test unit that i keep just for testing. Its P3 733 and has win xp pro. At least i tried to install it, no way, kept asking for files that werent there. I contacted HP who told me to install HP 550C drivers instead.
I did that, and with some other adjustments, like having to uninstall usb drivers and rebooting so system could re-install them, and a few other adjustments, its working. The tech guy told me "The issue seems to be with the some of the missing files from the Deskjet 5550 drivers which are required by the Operating System"
My cousin, who gave me the printer, installed it fine in his P4 system and he has win xp pro w sp2 installed.
I dont have sp1 or sp2 installed in my test unit.
I dont want to install the HP 5550 in my main unit as i have a Lexmark 4350 all in one unit that i like, although i do have sp 1 installed there.

My questions are:
Would the absence of sp1 and\or sp2 make a difference in wether one could install the 5550 drivers instead of having to revert to the 550 drivers?

If anyone else out there has this printer installed with either set of drivers, can you tell me if you have sp1 or sp2 installed?

I hope to get some idea of other peoples installations and if they had any issues with thi... Read more

I just bought a new HP computer
running WIN XP SP1
160 gig hd
1 gig mem
p4 3.4 ghz

i had an existing hp deskjet 5550 that i used on my old win 2k system

when i installed it on my new computer it installed o.k. i wanted to print out some digital photos, and when i went into "print" then selected "options" to change from "fast draft" to the highest setting (cant rememebr the name) that tab was all in french. nothing else was in french but the "options tab"

weird.

i deleted the printer, reinstalled - ALL was in english for a few days. i had to reboot the system, when XP came up, it said it "detected new hardware" (my printer) - next thing i know - i am back to french.

i called HP printer support and they wanted $30 - forget that

i went thru all my windows settings and everything appears fine.

i get this in french with ALL programs that allow me to print.

any thoughts? i am at work now, and i just downloaded a driver update for win xp for the deskjet 5550 - maybe this will fix my problem???

After a long time of inactivity, and with the help of a member of the Tech Guy forums here, I was able to re-avtivate my HP Deskjet 5550 printer. But it seems, there is one more problem to be solved: the paper is not reached by the pulling wheels inside.

I suspect a missing part here. Please have a look to the two photos showing the empty paper tray (I removed, for better visibility, the outlet tray), and the same tray filled with some paper. The papers are on the ground, but the wheels above them which should pull them into the mechanics of the printer, are not touching them. Thus my suspicion of a missing part.

Is there anyone who can assist me? It is so frustrating to had to wait six years to use this printer again (HP does not offer support nor even any response to help requests to people from Jamaica), and now to face a second problem just after the first problem of a missing cable was solved.

I have a Windows Me here at work and there is a HP Deskjet 5550. The other day, the printer was working just fine. Even had gotten new ink for it as well! The other day, I returned from work and the printer is no longer workign. So I went through the control panel and checked the install of it. I had deleted any old printers. Then I went to the www.hp.com site and downloaded the recommended driver for the computer. It downloaded and loaded into the computer. Though, it will not download the driver into a file so the printer can start to work again. Any ideas on how to fix this? /SIZE]

Hi.

Hope this is kinda the right sub forum to post my request here.

I have a HP Deskjet 5550 printer, but its power cable was stolen. Now I need again a power cable, but can't find such anywhere around me. I should say, that I live in Jamaica. So the amount of such shops is limited. I of course contacted HP and many online shops without success.

There are two versions of that cable: one with a triple plastic plug towards the printer in green or gray or some other color maybe, and one with a single metallic cylindrical plug - that one I need.

I want to ask here, if there's anyone here who could sell me that type of cable? If so, please PM me, and also show me a photo of that cable and plug (to ensure for me it's the right one).

Thanks a lot.

Windows 7 / HP Deskjet 5550:  Printer has been working fine, but for some unknown reason it has decided to change over to Excruciatingly Slow Printing Mode:  instead of hearing the carrier busily scurrying back and forth, it now trundles once
across, then takes a long rest, then heads back the other direction.  Now, I'm getting on up in those "senior years" and so my walk-abouts and hikes are becoming more and more like that too . . . but after running HP Print & Scan Doctor
and trying every reset procedure I know of, the 5550 is not up to speed here; replaced the USB cable, but that made no difference; have gone through the "HP Printers - Slow Printing (Windows)" page of instructions, but nothing there made any difference.

Any suggestions toward a solution?

Moved my HP Deskjet 5550 from win 98 to XP using a parallel to USB cable. Obtained latest drivers and installed. Test print and calibration both correct but won't print out anything but first centimeter on page before ejecting in any other application. Print preview (even the HP supplied one) shows one page correctly but print queue lists it as 3 pages!

Is this to do with XP the cable or what? Have uninstalled and reinstalled - same problem. Have checked page set up in application and printer and all appears correct.

Can't understand why test page correct but nothing else!

Any help welcome!

A:Solved: Deskjet 5550 won't print properly

Umm... okay, when you say 'parallel to USB', do you mean a USB/Parallel adaptor? If so, why not just use a USB cable, since the 5550 has an either/or system? (I have 2 of these machines, one of which is plugged into two computers - one through the parallel, one through the USB.)

Remember though, since the 5550 has both jacks available, you have to chose which setup to use when doing so. If you are using a parallel to parallel hookup, the printer has to be plugged into the parallel jack and powered on while the software is being installed. If you're trying to plug it in via a USB to USB connection, you must install the software BEFORE plugging the machine into the USB jack - the install will tell you when to plug it in. If you are using a USB/Parallel adaptor, ITS OWN software must be installed first. The adaptor then needs to be plugged into the computer, and THEN you plug the printer into the adaptor and power it up, followed by installing the software via the Parallel to Parallel method.

Now, the other thing to remember is to either use the 5550's install disk to remove the software, or simply delete the 5550's icon from the Printer's and Faxes listing on your Control Pannel. I do NOT reccommend using "Add or Remove Software" for printers, since this program can remove too much, such as registry information from Windows.

Good luck!

A-N

I'm trying to check the ink levels for my printer. For HP Deskjet 1000 J100 series. I've installed and set up the printer but don't know where the control panel or HP toolbox is. I opened the HP Deskjet icon, but the only thing that opens is a window asking if I want to install a new printer. I opened the HP Smart app, and the printer says that it's Ready, but when I click on printer settings, then print quality tools, it says "This feature is not available for your selected printer through HP smart app. To check control panel."

I've been going around in circles trying to find the control panel or toolbox. Also, I've been using the printer for a couple of years now, with no problems. So it's hooked up correctly. It's only now I decided to use the Check Printer ink function.

Maybe I need to install another driver or something. All I want to do is check printer ink levels. Please help.

Thanks, Josie

Yeah, so I have an HP Deskjet 1050 J410 Series printer. It is not printing complete pages, it is cutting out complete lines on the pages. I am using the ink that came with it and regular printer paper. I have an HP computer as well, running windows 7. I do not know what is wrong, so I was hoping you could help me. I am in college and really need to be able to use this printer.

I have a HP deskjet 5550 printer connected to a XP pro (32 bit), it is shared. I have no problem using this shared printer either from the local XP machine or another XP machine. I had no problem using the share when I have Vista Ultimate 32 bit installed. However the Vista Ultimate 64 bit gives an error stating the server does not have the correct drivers, and requests that I supply and inf file.

Searching the HP web site they state the vista already has the drivers. I connect direct using a USB cable and can print without issue. Even after that no luck connecting via a share.

How can i solve this problem ?

Just so that I can get a complete picture... are all PC's laptops or desktops?

Vista should have the driver that is correct.

I'm assuming that the Vista machine can see the other PC's in the network. Is the network working?

I'll also assume the Printer is connected to the main desktop machine?

As you can see you haven't really given us much information to go by.

Hi .

If you have a home network setup...regardless of location of the printer, any system can print on it. All you have to do is make the printer a shared device on the network.

Start/Control Panel/Printers & Faxes...right-click on printer, select Properties...click on Sharing tab, put mark in Share This Printer, click Apply, click OK.

I just realized...there's a little more to be done, my apologies .

Now that we have the printer set up for sharing...we have to set it up as a shared device on the other computers. This is pretty easy.

Click My Network Places. Click Printers & Faxes, click Add A Printer...Next...select A Network Printer or Printer Attached. Next, Browse For A Printer, Next. Double-click on your home workgroup, select the printer with mouse, click Next. Click Finish.

My wife wanted an all-in-one printer/scanner so I bought her an HP Photosmart C5550 to replace her HP Deskjet 6540 ( which will probably become my new printer). When I went to install the new unit (after removing the previous printer & associated software), when I get to the place in the install instructions where it says to connect the usb cable, as soon as I do, my computer reboots. I called tech support and the nice man in India after 2 hours of removing the 5550 software and drivers that I had installed, got to the same point of connecting the usb cable. He said to connect it and when I did, sure enough, the computer rebooted. The pc is a Compaq Presario so the tech support guy said no problem, the printer and pc are both HP products, the problem lays with the pc not the printer and passed me on to pc support who dropped my phone call after 15 minutes on hold.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what I might do to get this all-in-one unit working? I haven't tried reinstalling the previous printer yet, tho that would probably be the simplest test to make. To the best of my knowledge, the printer (6540 and scanner) were working ok when I took them off of my wife's pc. So, any ideas?

I would hang on to your current GPU till you can jump up to the 5770 or better, of course allowing that your PSU is up for the task. Just my opinion and if you can sell your GPU then that could change things a little as well.

Do you think a NEW printer is the answer ?

A:Windows 7 with a HP 5550 printer

Seems like Windows 7 is loading his own printer drivers, that are very generic, useful for emergencies and little more. It's remarkable that they work at all on so much different devices.
Did you install the right drivers?

From HP's site they say there are 5 different kinds of HP5550. please locate the manual or something to identify your printer, then try going here, select the printer you have and then on "microsoft windows 7 64 bit", then download and install the latest Universal Printer Driver.

Another thing that may help is the latest HP Print View software, from that same page, which seems to be a more advanced print utility. (HP Print View Software is a suite of tools that can help you produce professional-quality marketing material by using your own HP Printers.)

Try both and see if you regain control of the printer, then report back.

Leave the usb cable hooked up and plug in the power for the printer. Then go to device manager and delete any printer that shows. Then reboot and watch for the new hardware wizard to start then when the driver installation starts select specific location and direct it to the drivers you have and click on the .inf file within.

I think I just broke it, the plastic cover of the printer was up and the ink cartrige cover was up and it decided to move, running into itself and making a grinding noise. Now all I hear is a computer ding somewhere! Now it has decided to work again, but color is still bad. Anyway, I have changed cartridges, now have 3 color ones open, I dinked around with the type of paper I was using, matte, plain glossy etc. Is there a simple solution - other than the costly one of buying a new printer? Seems I remember something about cleaning the ink cartridge itself? Any help would be appreciated!

Does that model come with software to do maintenance? Have you ran the head cleaning application? If not, remove the ink cartridges as you normally would, and apply alcohol to a Q tip and carefully clean the heads. Insert the cartridges back into the printer and try again. Another problem with HP printers is that everytime you remove the ink cartridges, you have to run the software to align the print heads. This is one of the first printers that I had to do this to after replacing the old ones. You should have a settings option in your software fro mHP. The cartridge alignment program is there.

I have a Dell 5558 I7 and system is approved for win 10 according to Dell . A few questions: 1)Will the HDD recovery partition and other restore features on the HDD be upgraded to be compatible to Win 10? 2) How would I completely restore the image to Win 10 in the future if there is a problem? I have a both a factory 8.1 OS recovery media and system disks I burned. I would assume I would have to create recovery system disks for win 10 and the factory disks would be obsolete. 3) Are the program compatibility modes the same in win 8.1 and 10 the same. I am running some legacy programs.

A:Dell Inspiron 5550 Laptop Upgrade to Win 10

1. No, your recovery partition will still have the OS that it shipped with. if that was Windows 8.1 then it will still be 8.1.
2. You can create a USB install Flash drive, or, once Windows 10 is installed and everything is working well, you can create a Drive Image and save that to a USB HDD using Windows Backup or a 3rd party app.
3. Most programs that worked in Windows 8.1 should work in Windows 10, check with the software makers web site to see if there is a Win 10 Update

Yo, So I have an Alienware Area 51m 5550 and for a few months I was having display issues, mostly whilst gaming to start with, then the frequency increased. My screen would go black(no backlight to begin with, then after 10 or so seconds, with backlight) for about a minute in total then flicker and go back on and I always got this windows message saying that the display driver had stopped working but then fully recovered. As it recovered it was annoying but seemed to carry on working for a while afterwards. Then it began to happen so often I couldn't use my computer for games at all, and after a couple of days so often the laptop was completely unusable (without tearing my hair out/throwing it through the nearest window). So I took it to the computer guy at the health clinic I work at after I had tried using different versions of the drivers to no avail, he did the same as me to start with, nothing changed so he said he wanted to reinstall windows, he installed Vista Ultimate though(he got it at one of those launch party tings where they give it out or some ****) , I previously had Home Ultimate. And he noticed that when he put it in the server room (its really cool and airy etc) there were no issues but in a normal room it heated up well quick and the display driver continued to fritz out. 2 days later, everything was seemingly ok, hadnt seen the message after a new driver was installed, sweet....till I boot up and get a phat BSOD talking ******** about the video driver, thi... I found out that my driver for my scanjet 5550C was not working with Vista. I read in a thread that the driver for 5590 would work and I downloaded it from the HP website. It works like a charm. Thank goodness for all of you who post on this forum. Stamping Angel

Hi,
I have an Acer Aspire 5551 Laptop. Recently it was infected by a virus and I had to reinstall Windows XP SP2. After that i installed all drivers available for this model from the Acer site, and some empowering Tech utilities (framework and eSettings). But when i tried to install the driver for Bluetooth, it said "Device not found. Please check it is connected and turned on".So i tried to push the slider button on the front of the laptop, but the bluetooth didnt switch on. Before the reinstall, this was working fine.Similarly the slider button for wireless network is also not working. Then i tried to install USB driver for my LG phone, but again there was some problem. Though the LG sync software can detect the phone, but cant transfer files or anything. Once it gave some error message about some problem in COM port or some such thing. But i didnt understand it.I am wondering whether there is some basic motherboard driver which i did not install, which is causing all this ?I had already installed the chipset utility from the site.
Any suggestions are welcome.
thanks and regards
Rahul

After seeing the A/E485 keyboard issues, the reddit Thinkpad community investigated the remaining Thinkpad keyboards. We discovered that these other, non-A/E485 Thinkpad keyboards also have significant coalescing problems which scramble keys. A test program to quantify the issue reveals that keys closer than 23ms are scrambled. Many people collaborated over many machines to provide data. To easily see the problem, press "asdf" simultaneously, and note that "fdsa" will appear. It's much easier to type fdsa really fast than to type asdf fast, on a Thinkpad keyboard. We hope that this can be fixed because the E-series does not experience this issue. The trackpoint also has poor sampling behavior, with a 7ms internal sampling rate and a 16ms external sampling rate. This causes timepoints to be staggered in an uneven 10-17-17 manner. All T-series, X-series keyboards are affected, both Windows and Linux. That includes the 7-row keyboards.E-series is not affected.Nobody has yet submitted data for E/A485 either pre-patch or post-patch. I have a set of HP Z210 Workstations with E3-1245-V2 Xeon Cpu's, SSD boot drives and varying sizes of memory from 8-16GB 1600Mghz DDR3 ECC. We use Windows 8 Enterprise for these machines, with Hyper-V enabled.
We get regular driver failures from the 2 sets of USB controllers on the machines (Mainly and issue for the KB & Mouse) that can only be resolved with a full power down (not restart) and a power up. This happens at least once every 1-3 days per machine.
I had gone through the HP support, but they have advised this isn't an issue on their side, and I had agreed all along. I was just hoping to get some traction by notifying them. Anyway, after a lengthy trouble shooting session, we found that once Hyper-V
was enabled, the fault arose.
As it was an Intel chip, they I asked them. They advised that on Windows 8, the drivers are supplied via windows update and that it was not their issue.
So, how can I get this resolved? Not through HP or Intel, surely through MS? Maybe not. Disabling Hyper-V is not desired as I the teams with these PC's are developers and require local visualization. Also, we have templates ready for Hyper-V, I don't really
want to remove Hyper-V and use Virtual box or VMWare workstation. but I am at wits end with the fault and lack of help from the vendors.
Please help.

A:Hyper-V causes Intel(R) Series/C200 Series Chipset Family USB Enhanced Host Controller driver to fail

I have found a work around for this fault with the USB failure - ENSURE YOU POWER  THE MACHINE OFF - DO NOT RESTART.
Its almost like the restart doesn't initialise the device correct, thus causing a failure.

All,

With the new year, we start a fresh discussion for members to share their order and fulfillment experiences.

We are retiring the 2014 thread    Anyone having an active discussion there can find it here.

The 2012-2013 tread  can be found here .

Here are some common points of frequent discussion:

How to get a system fast: Buy an in-stock standard configuration from Lenovo or a Lenovo Partner in your area. Customized systems take longer.
Avoid Credit Holds - ensure that BOTH your bill to and ship to addresses are listed with your CC bank before ordering
Lenovo will not bill your card until order ships - an authorization charge hold to check for available balance may show up when order is first placed.
Estimated ship dates are based on default lead time and can vary from what was displayed on website.
In the US and Canada, Lenovo utilizes UPS for new product shipments
Orders may ship before the Estimated Ship Date
Orders may enter through Alaska and pass through Louisville, KY before traveling on to final address
Cancellation requests may take up to 2 days to process
Requests to change configuration or other aspects of the order may require the order to be rebooked.
Lenovo does not accept payment via international credit cards, except AMEX.

We hope you enjoy your new ThinkPad system when it arrives!

2 years ago I decided against grabbing a Thinkpad and instead went for an Asus ultrabook for the sake of a better screen. I now deeply regret this decision and desire a more durable machine.Onto the main topic, is the added cost of the T series worth it, I'd love the larger battery but other than that I can't see anything else on a surface level to differentiate the machines. For reference I'm looking at the T480 and E480.Thanks to all replies in advance.
