Thinkpad A485 - Bios 1.05 worsens throttling further

Q: Thinkpad A485 - Bios 1.05 worsens throttling further

I just updated the Bios on my machine hoping for the performance to start going further to becoming at least on par with the E485/E585, but to my horror, it now throttles even worse! What used to be a stable 2.5Ghz on the CPU during a Cinebench run on high performance mode, resulting in an underwhelming but acceptable 530-560cb is now 2.0Ghz! This barely puts it in the 450-480cb range, which is almost as bad as quiet mode on the previous bios. This is completely unacceptable. If the E485/E585 can get 600cb consistently, so can the A485. The cooling isn't the problem, just stop limitting the laptop and let it get a little louder/hotter so we can get the performance we have been advertised! 70 degrees is _not_ a suitable temp limit in high performance mode. Please try and fix this. This could be the best Ryzen laptop around, but right now, you're just a fool for buying this over the E485. Here's a look at my findings https://imgur.com/a/qXJS2Bs

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, It seems that this latest BIOS version (1.02) is causing a few different performance issues for the ThinkPad A485. Once obtaining my A485 I ran some synthetic benchmarks to judge CPU performance. After updating to the latest BIOS, I have noticed a decrease in performance on the order of about 10%. It seems that this BIOS update has allowed the CPU to exhibit more stable performance and CPU throttling behavior under constant load, e.g. as seen in the updates to this article: https://www.notebookcheck.net/Lenovo-ThinkPad-A485-Ryzen-5-Pro-Laptop-Review.334528.0.html but at the cost of some overall performance. Adding to this, after having owned a ThinkPad A485 with a Ryzen 5 2500u and one with a Ryzen 7 2700u, it seems as though Lenovo's power management is aggressively holding back the Vega 10 GPU in the Ryzen 7 2700u, as opposed to the Vega 8 GPU in the Ryzen 5 2500u. Previously, in CineBench R15 (https://www.maxon.net/en/products/cinebench/) benchmarks, my A485 with the 2500u would achieve ~37fps during testing, while hardware monitoring software would show that the GPU was achieving a clock speed of about 800mhz. With my new A485 that has the Vega 10 GPU, it is impossible to achieve more than ~25fps under the same test and testing conditions and the hardware monitoring software shows that the GPU can not reach a clock speed higher than what I believe to be the near-base clock of 400mhz. With both laptops, this testing was performed with the Windows po... Read more

Can we please have confirmation that the A485 will be supported for BIOS updates via Linux Vendor Firmware Service (LVFS)?According to the website https://fwupd.org/lvfs/devicelist I can see that fairly new Thinkpads like the P52/P72 are already supported. I do not mind waiting (within reasonable time frame) for Lenovo to fix the BIOS issues but at least I would like to be able to update my system without relying on Windows. Can we please have an update on anything revolving this machine? Is LVFS support coming or not? Is a BIOS update planned fairly soon so that I can stick with Windows for a bit longer? Please shed some light on the situation. A simple yes is coming or no is not will suffice so that we can all move on... Thank you.

A:Lenovo, please add LVFS compatibility for Thinkpad A485

Hi,

I can't answer your immediate question, but I'm posting to make sure you know there's a way to get there. Perhaps you're already aware but others may not be...

It still requires Windows, but that could be in a VM if you don't have a Win box handy.  The Windows update exe includes a tool to make a bootable flash drive.  Instructions in the readme.

I realize it's not ideal but at least it's possible.

Hi, The ThinkPad A485 currently suffers from the same issue as the E485, where if typing on the keyboard quickly, jumbles up the letters. This appears to be a firmware bug as I have tested in in Windows and Linux, and yet it persists. https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-11e-Windows-13-E-and/E485-strangely-unresponsive-keyboard/td-p... Could I please also have confirmation that the A485 will be supported for BIOS updates via LVFS (fwupd.org)? If you need any more information please ping me. Cheers

I noticed and issue with the ThinkPad A485 (AMD Ryzen) and DisplayPort audio. If using either the Lenovo Pro dock or the Lenovo USB-C dock, I'm unable to get sound to come through my Acer B247Y 24" monitors using a DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable. The monitors have built-in speakers. It seems Windows 10 thinks it's sending the audio through to the monitors, but nothing comes out. Connecting the HDMI port on the side of the A485 to HDMI on the monitor will produce sound. Using a DisplayPort to female HDMI adapter from the back of either docking station and then connecting an HDMI cable to the adapter and then to HDMI on the monitor will also produce sound. There are no settings on the monitor that seem to do anything for it. I can select the Acer AMD High Definition Audio source in Sound Properties and the little equalizer meter moves when you right-click "Test sound", just no audio comes out using DisplayPort to DisplayPort. I'm not sure if this is an issue with USB-C and DP Alt-Mode which the A485 uses for either the Pro dock or USB-C dock. This does not seem to be an issue with an Intel-based machines using USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 or just Intel and DisplayPort audio. Other testing I've done.1. DisplayPort to DisplayPort does produce sound through the Acer monitor with the Pro dock and the Lenovo Thunderbolt 3 dock using a ThinkPad T480. DisplayPort to HDMI will also produce sound.2. DisplayPort to DisplayPort does produce sound through the Acer mo... I'm loving my new A485 but I have 2 issues that I'm unanble to solve. First:Silent/Perfomance toggle is only showing up sometimes? There is this little speedometer in the taskbar that is either bleu or orange depending on your silent or performance setting. But often this toggle is missing from my taskbar after a sleep / hibernation or full restart. I tried almost everything to figure out what could trigger this issue but I haven't really figured out what it could be... All software is up to date and I'm running Win 10 1809   Second:Installing a second SSD in the wwan port (m.2 2242)Is this even possible? I inserted a new M.2 2242 SATA SSD with 512GB but it does not show up anywhere in the Disk manager or in MS dos (diskpart).  A little help would be welcome for this new Thinkpad user

I am testing the new models of Thinkpad A485 units Model Type 20MV S00U00.OS installs just fine.I have the drivers for enterprise that were downloaded from the lenovo site, they installed just fine.I have a script that as part of the setup it installs around 38 wireless profiles and its the same script that we use in all our models. On this model is causing a BSOD pointing to the "rtwlane.sys" file.  after some research I have downloaded the latest driver from Realtek.  This did not help.I added a pause command on the script so that the script pauses after each individual profile is installed to see if its one particular profile causing the issue. Each time that I run the script, the BSOD happens at a different profile.

A blue screen error (also called a stop error) can occur if a problem causes your PC to shut down or restart unexpectedly. When you experience this type of error, you won?t be able to see things like the Start menu or the taskbar on the screen when your PC is turned on. Instead you might see a blue screen with a message that your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart.

Hello everyone, I recently purchased a refurbished Thinkpad W541 that came with Windows 10. On Windows 10, the laptop had some sleep issues that had something to do with the GPU setup and Windows 10 compatibility on the laptop. A clean (non-OEM) Windows 8.1 reinstall later, I fixed the issue but ran into a new one: whenever I unplug the laptop and run it on battery, it immediately locks CPU clock speed on all cores to about 750-780mhz (the bottom of the SpeedStep spectrum for my CPU, the 4910MQ), a completely unusable speed even for YouTube videos and web browsing. No amount of load from any program will make it boost any higher (namely using wPrime). So I checked the usual power plan options and maxed everything out, but nothing worked. Hi, I just got a new Thinkpad X1 Yoga and I would be happy so far, if it was not for the severe thermal throttling. I checked with throttlestop and the PROCHOT (so the temperature at which the CPU thermal throttles) is set to 85C. This is far too low and should rather be 95C or 100C. Is this normal for this machine? I updated BIOS to the latest one (1.27) - no change.

Hello everyone. T540p, OS Windows 7 pro. Yesterday I noticed that while unplugged my T540p is really slow. Like slow-slow-slow I've checked with cpuz CPU freq and saw that freq is locked on 800MHz. When I connect power cord freq jumps to ~2GHz according to cpuz, when I disconnect power cord freq drops to 800MHz. My power plan is ?Maximum Performance? and ?System performance? has been set to ?Maximum turbo?. This throttling  accures on any ?System performance? but ?balanced?. In ?balanced? mode it works fine levering up CPU freq on high load and lowering it down while idle. But right now there's no way to turn this balanced mode off and keep CPU on high freq when power cord is unplugged. What I've tried:1. Revert all Window's updates for last 3 weeks. No luck.2. Reset BIOS settings to factory defaults. Set in BIOS \ power everything to ?Max performance?. No luck.3. Checked Window's power manager and checked max freq and min freq settings (everything on 100%), changed those params - no affect, reverted those params back to 100% - no affect,  Recently I updated BIOS to 2.25 ... maybe it's related. Has anyone faced this issue? How to fix it?

Hey there! @am1re,

Thank you for visiting the HP Forums! A great place where you can find solutions for your issues, with help from the community!

I understand that temperature reaches OTP (over temperature protection), the CPU will throttle and the computer exhibits limited CPU/GPU performance.

I have checked the records and found a service advisory which tells us to update BIOS to F.09 which you are already running on your PC.

Another workaround is checking with 150w adapter instead of using a regular adapter.

Advisory recommendation- When the customer encounters the battery drain or fps drop when playing heavy loading games, advice to the customer to upgrade to the latest BIOS and provide a 150W adapter to the customer to improve computer performance.

I'll keep an eye out for your response.

I hope you have a great day!

Hi, my CPU is i7-8550u and my GPU is MX150. V2.05 of the BIOS (4qcn41ww) works well. However, the big issue is that the fan curve is so high that fans will spin 24/7, even on idle. The laptop is able to overclock/underclock in response to demand needs. Excellent, but too loud. I upgraded to V2.07, which definitely fixed the fan curve problem, especially when "Quiet Mode" is selected in the BIOS. HOWEVER, there is one extreme issue, the clock speed will be fixed to a single speed indefinitely until reboot. The clock speed is not able to dynamically change. This is terrible because it either is fixed to 0.4Ghz (EXTREMELY SLOW) or 1.8Ghz (still slow, bearable, but I shouldn't have to deal with this in my purchase). These clock speeds were provided by Windows Task Manager. The throttle starts at a random time, and doesn't end until the computer is rebooted. After dealing with V2.07, I've reverted to V2.05 (provided by a Lenovo Chat assistant). I'm back to loud fans, but a properly running device. This issue is not heat related, I don't think. I have a CPU temperature reading, and it throttles to 0.4Ghz even at 45C (which is idle). I've attempted to fix this problem, if it may be thermals, by applying an undervolt via Throttlestop. However, the issue persists regardless of it throttlestop is running or not. I've ran an Official Lenovo Hardware Scan, and my computer comes up clean. For a $1000 laptop, I'm really surprised at how shoddy o... Read more

The new official graphics drivers for the A485 (7/11) exhibit the same resolution bug as unofficial sideloaded drivers. This is not seen in the previous graphics driver (6/8) and needs to be fixed. The problem is that it locks the resolution of certain games to 1080p, as this becomes the only recognisable resolution for the display - as seen by Custom Resolution Utility showing only 1080p at 60hz and 48hz. Adding 1280x720, as it is the only playable resolution for most games anyway, results in a blackscreen when using it.This entirely breaks games like Final Fantasy XII The Zodiac Age, causing a white screen crash, and locks 1080p to at least Distance and Far Cry 3 from my testing.

i have the R40E and it has a bios code, i got the laptop from a friend and it had been stolen from him and recovered with the bios code on it now, we couldn't crack the code and i tried removing the watch battery from it for the 10 mins. and it is still there. there is no way of figuring out the code, is there any other way to get rid of it. btw when you hold the ESC key with the space bar it takes you to other screens telling you to press more keys but eventually they all take you back to entering the code. the blue access ibm button does nothing at all.

I've been through this before. You'll have to contact IBM and be ready to fork over big bucks. Unless the laptop is near new, it won't be worth what you'll have to pay. And if it is coded like mine was, both the computer and the hard disk are useless.

On the Dell, it was called "Password Authentication System".

Dell wanted $129 to help me with mine. I junked it.

Hello everyone,

do someone know a procedure to remove de bios pass on a thinkpad t43 ? I've seen this procedure http://sodoityourself.com/hacking-ibm-thinkpad-bios-password/ but i'll rather hear from you guys first, instead of tweaking the chip.

If someone knows about a pass software like the dell latitude one or similar i'll thankyou a lot.

Cheers.

the T43 password removal can only be doing using special i2c programmer. there are no master passwords for these laptops.

My in-laws just acquired an IBM 2620 ThinkPad, model 30F, laptop at a church rummage sale. There were no manuals, disks, or any other helpful pieces of information included. I suspect Windows 3.1 is installed in that there is no CD on this machine.

The machine requires a password to get in, but we don't know the password. Is there a way to access the hard drive, or format the hard drive, without knowing the password?

Pressing F1 during boot doesn't do it.
I tried booting from a DOS system floppy, but can't get past the password requirement.
And, IBM doesn't support this model anymore, and I can't get anything off their website to give me acccess.

Any ideas?

Hello -

My roommate's IBM Thinkpad 600E has come to a grinding halt - come to find out that he's been surfing all over the place without any virus or spyware protection ever since we got DSL. We didn't realize how innocent he was about computers, and he's getting a painful education now. It's so full of god know what that it will no longer completely boot up, not even in safe mode. I don't even want to try and clean it up, even if it did manage to boot up eventually. We figured that the best thing to do would be to just wipe the whole thing out, reformat it, and reinstalll XP (and a virus scanner).

The problem is that it won't boot to anything but the hard drive, and I can't get to the BIOS to change the boot sequence. I've looked around the internet, checked IBM"S website and the folks that now support their laptops, and I've tried pressing every key and combination of keys while starting up that I've been told to press, and all the other ones I can think of, as well. Nothing works. Either it ignores me completely and continues to try and boot to the hard drive, or else occasionally I get a little icon that looks like it might be a padlock, but no other message telling me to enter a password or anything. Is that what it means, or does it just mean that I've been pressing too many buttons and it's locking me out? I couuldn't find any info about this icon, or much else that was useful,... Read more

Presently I am having the older version 2.02 of BIOS on my Thinkpad 430s. The lenova website version is not desirable for me as it prevents roll back to an earlier version if needed by me. The older versions of BIOS carry 7 digit numbers and updating to any version 2.5 or above which have 10 didgit numbers, will prevent me for ever from rolling back. So I need the version just earlier to 2.5, which happens to be 2.05 as seen from the read me text file of the BIOS version now available on Lenovo website. Please help from where I can download the 2.05 version. After upgrading to WIN10 Pro, my computer is experiencing blue screen errors, the moment I connect to the internet. As long as I dont connect with internet I am able to work on my computer. Analysis using the Who Crashed tool shows the problem to be originating from NIVIDIA NVS 5200 driver and this blue screen death fix was incorporated in version 2.05. Hence this request.thanks in advance.

A:Where can I get BIOS version 2.05 for my Thinkpad ...

Good day and welcome to the community.

Have a look at: http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/Laptops-and-netbooks/ThinkPad-T-Series-laptops/ThinkPad-T43... for the bootable CD BIOS installer and scroll down towards the bottom to see the prior versions and their links. If you prefer the Windows executable BIOS installer, see: http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/Laptops-and-netbooks/ThinkPad-T-Series-laptops/ThinkPad-T43...

Hope this helps.
Regards.

Hi, I have a Thinkpad A30 2652-3WG BIOS v1.03, which I recently revived, installing Windows XP SP3. I noted that the graphics driver required BIOS v1.14 or higher. Having an old BIOS v1.03, I downloaded BIOS v1.19 and tried to update. But no matter what I do, whether I choose the floppy or non-floppy version, or even an older BIOS: When I get to the point where I answer "Yes" to start the BIOS update procedure, I get the error: "System program update is currently disabled. The process has been canceled." I have checked through all options in the Bios setup, as well as in the Thinkpad Configuration tool in the Control Panel, but I cannot find any settings for enabling/disabling Bios updates. The only think I've found, is an option to enable update through LAN, which is enabled by default. Any ideas?

Welcome to the forum! A complete shot in the dark on my part, but doesn't cost you anything to try: remove the CMOS (BIOS) battery for an hour, and the main battery at the same time. Keep the machine unplugged throughout this period of time. Before doing all of the above, please make sure that no Supervisor or BIOS passwords are enabled, so you don't get locked out of the system.  Plug everything back and see how it goes. Good luck and let us know.

I have a thinkpad G40 type 2389-Y11. i replaced the cmos battery and upon booting back up i go error code 0271 check date and time settings, then i got prompted for a password that i do not have because i bought the computer used for my deployment to iraq. I understand there is connector pads on the motherboard to reset the bios, can anyone tell me which pads they may be or another way around it? thanks for your help

A:Thinkpad bios reset

I would inquire at IBM's tech support. You may have to prove that it wasn't stolen.
