I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Yikes. Two doc files simply disappeared yesterday. There were still tmp files in the folder, and I recovered the text from them (not perfect, but recent.) NOW I notice that tmp files aren't going away, aren't being automatically deleted as they normally are when I exit Word. What's up with this?

When saving a Word 2007 document as a webpage (htm, html), an extra folder is automatically created besides the hmtl document itself. This folder contains background information like pictures, wallpaper etc. Is there a way to prevent that folder from being created in the first place? I've got Word 2000 on another computer, and when I save my word documents as html files over there, that extra folder is not generated. The only time that folder is created in 2000 is if my documents contain pictures, wallpaper etc. In Word 2007, it is created all the time, even though my documents are just plain text.

A:Solved: Word 2007, saving document as html document: how to get rid of extra folder?

Managed to find the solution, it was very simple after all. One has to save the document as a filtered webpage and click "yes" when a box pops up warning you that you will use certain featuers which are specific to Office2007, such as the background. Then the document will save without that extra folder and files.

I noticed an issue when saving Word docx files on Office 2016. It's slow, I see a progress bar at the bottom right when it saves and it takes about 30 seconds to save. Okay it's large file with a couple hundred pages and a few hundred kb in size but surely it shouldn't take this long? If I save files on older 97-2003 doc format the saves are more or less instant. It's worth noting that opening the docx file up is instantaneous, no lag. As a test I created another docx file a couple hundred pages large and just filled it with gobbledegook. The same issue when I saved it! I tried switching to my wife's user account to test further and same issue, so it's not user account specific. It may also be worth noting that although it's 365 I default my save location to be local.

Now a caveat, this happens only on manual saves within word. If I finish editing and close word it prompts me to save on exit. The file will then save in a milli second!!!

I tried the same docx file on my older (much weaker) laptop and saved it locally and it saves it much quicker (1 sec approx.). The older laptop runs Office 2010.

Is this a common problem? Maybe I have a setting in office causing this but I wouldn't know what to start on. There's nothing obvious and the setup of Word that I have is pretty much default. I am not noticing same issue on other office applications such as excel. It seems to specifically relate to docx files!

EDIT looks to be a big issue, see http://answers.microsoft.com... Read more

Recently, I moved several MS Word 2007 documents from my new Vista laptop to my desktop Vista PC, which also has Office 2007, so the Office software is compatible.

I don't know whether this transfer triggered the glitch but now, whenever I open a docx document, I get a prompt saying:

"Windows cannot find 'C:\Users\Stephen C. Galleher\Documents\Stephen's Documents\Quotations, etc\Gratitude.docx'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again."

Odd...but then the document does, in fact, open.

But the document that opens is in compatibility mode [Read only] mode. This is odd!!

Then, when I go to save as as Word 2007 document, I get this prompt:

The file ... already exists: Do you want to o Replace the existing file. o Save changes with a different name; o Merge changes into existing file."

This glitch or series of glitches does not occur when I open a Word document in an older version, only when I open a docx document.

What the devil is going on? And how can I correct it?

Any help would be so, so appreciated!

I am running a smallish network/domain - with workstations running win 7 pro and Office 2003. The server is running SBS 2011. All PCS have AVG installed.
The problem occurs intermittently (as far as I can tell, but it might be happening more often than I think - but we just aren't doing work that highlights the issue everyday), but if it starts happening one day - it seems to continue that day and is reproducible. And seems to happen on all/most workstations - regardless of whether the workstations are standard users or network administrators on SBS 2011.

Especially word 2003 comes up with the error:
"Word cannot complete the save due to a file permission error \\drp001\company\temp\test.doc" (and the document will change its name to a .tmp file - there is no problem saving to the workstation directly).
This occurs if a new document is saved to the server (on several different directories that I try), or if I try to edit and resave an existing document.

If I save a new document with excel 2003, I get the error:
"The document was saved successfully, but Excel cannot re-open it because of a sharing violation. Please close the document and try to open it again." There seems to be no error when saving an existing excel file.
There is no error doing the same with a .txt file through notepad.
There seems to be no error when editing and saving a .docx file through word.

Are you using a rewritable CD?
They are labeled CD-RW.
If it's not a CD-RW you can't update files already burned to the CD.

If it's a "write once" CD I believe you can add more files if you did not do a "finalized" burn.
They are labeled CD-R.

A:saving new document as WORD

In Internet Explorer (assuming that is your browser of choice) right click a balnk part of the IE toolbar at the top and select "customize"

Then add the "edit button" (assuming it's not already on the toolbar) and it should offer you the choice of "editing" the webpage in Word.

If on the other hand you are "Saving as" a .txt file, simply change your file associations to open txt files with Word will achieve a similar result.

As it stands, from reading your post its quite unclear exactly what you are doing.

Was curious if anyone else has heard of this problem. When working with a word document that I have opened and (saved) closed many times, I now open up the same document, still named the same and it is blank.
Weirder still, one of the word documents "somehow" changed the icon over to an excel icon and that is blank as well when opened in excel. Tried for the heck of it to rename but that of course made it completely unreadable.
The only rhyme or reason I can get from this is it seemed to all happen on the same day Mar. 17th.

So has anyone ever heard of word or excel deleting the contents of your document / spreadsheet when you save or do I start the standard virus and malware scanning?

The issue is when I go to save the PFD as a .doc format (word) it converts without issue. But, when I go to open the word format, the word document has nearly doubled in pages and the file size has grown vastly.

The original PDF is 60 pages, but when it is saved in .doc format the word doc increases to 120ish pages. The reason for this is easily noticable too, it leaves in a blank page nearly every other page for some reason. Any ideas why this is happening or what could be done to remedy this issue? Thanks!

We are using Word 2007 in Vista. We have never had any problems with it since installing in 2007. Last week, I was saving a document and it opened the target folder as usual and just froze. There was no error message. The busy icon was on screen but nothing was happening. I couldn't access anything else. I had to restart using Ctrl-Alt-Del. This has happened a number of times. By default it is saving docs as .docx. I hope this is enough info. As we are typical in size of a small business, it needs to be sorted asap. Thanks for any suggestions.

You can us this compatibility update to read Office 2007 docs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) In earlier versions of Office - Download details: Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats. Meaning you can save your Word docs in their original format and Word 2003 will read them.

As far as setting a "default" save, to be honest, I'm not sure if this can be done or not.

It would appear the problem relates to Kaspersky Security software. Your dump files are indicating klvfs.sys as the problematic driver which is part of their software.

I am really confused and frustrated. Just finished spending the last 8 hours writing a research paper. It's about 7 pages, and I went to click save as, decided the name, and then said ok...and now my microsoft word window says not responding. I checked the folder where I saved the document, and it has a document by that name, but it's 0 KB big and when you double click on it it's an empty word document. Omg, I can't have just wasted 8 hours of writing. I'm afraid to force the program to quit because then I'll lose everything for sure. I used the vista snipping tool to take a snapshot of the part of the page that is showing, but I can't get it to unfreeze...has anyone had this problem, and is there a way to unfreeze it so I can at least copy out the text?

OMG I'm dying. help.

Is it possible that when you save in Word (2000) it makes a backup copy on the C:?? I save all my work on a Floppy disk then put in my computer with printer (then print it). However recently my disk drive has been playing up and have lost everything on the disk.

So when I save something on a floppy it also creates a backup on the computers hard drive. (Saves file on Floppy A:\letter.doc and creates a backup on hard drive c:\backups\letter.bac)

I know you can create backups on word except it saves them in the same directory (in this case a:\ which is pointless since I lose all data on the disk)

Anyone tell me if i can do this?

I bought a new computer that runs Windows 7. I installed my copy of Office Ultimate 2007on it, then I uninstalled the trial version of Office 2010 that the computercame with. Then I transferred my files to my new computer.

Every Office program works correctly except Word 2007. While it does recognizes Word 97-2003 documents, it will not recognize Word 2007 documents (docx) and it will not create them either.

Instead, they are displayed with the wrong icon -- not the Word Document icon (blue and white with the W on it), but as a white rectangle withlines across and DOCX on the bottom. I instructed the computer to open these files with Word, and it does open them. In fact, I can edit and save them. However, they save as the unrecognized DOCX files and not as a Microsoft Office Word file.

If I run Word and instruct it to save a New Microsoft Office Word document, it also saves them as the odd DOCX files and not as Microsoft Word Documents. Thus it seems like Word will not make Word files.

When I check the file properties by right clicking, it says this for the type of file: "DOCX File(.docx)." It also says that Microsoft Word opens these documents.

If I check the properties of a Word 97-2003 document, it says it isthis type of file: "Microsoft Office Word 97 - 2003 Document (.doc)."

When I discovered the problem I re-installed Office Ultimate 2007, butit did not fix the problem.

Hi all.

First off, I'll say I can open word fine from a shortcut or using the EXE file. But when I click on a DOCX file, I get a window that word is preparing to install, then it gathers information and configures itself; then I think it runs an installer (?). And then, finally, it opens my file. I can close and click on the same file right away and it goes through the whole process. Every time.

It's annoying and time consuming. I've tried a couple of online "fixes" including running this line:
reg add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Options /v NoReReg /t REG_DWORD /d 1
and using Fix-It from Microsoft. No joy.

So I thought I'd best come here where I tend to trust y'all know what you're doing. And sometimes even what I'm doing!

As usual, I appreciate the help.

Problem with MS Word as part of MS Office 2007 Professional Plus running on Windows 7.
When I view a folder in Windows Explorer all docx files show up with a plain white icon, not a Word icon. I have done the following:
Start > Control Panel > Default Programs > Associate a file type or protocol with a program.
Then scrolled down the display and selected the docx extension - it already shows as Microsoft Office Word - clicked on Change Program, reset the program to WordPad, then back in the display clicked on the Change Program icon again. This tiime I reset it
to Microsoft Office Word.
However when I go back into Explorer the icon has not changed. Even if I close it down and restart it again. And even after a reboot.
Also, I have checked the individual properties of the docs files, using Explorer, and they do say Open With Microsoft Word. So no problem there either.
Any suggestions welcome as to how to change it so the icon displayed is Word not blank.

A:Docx file association is set up correctly but does not display Word icon when viewing in Explorer

Hello Orchestrand - These icon issues are tricky to track down. I assume it’s only Word and no other icons. Has it been this way since installing Office or did it start recently? Graham was correct to try the Icon Cache steps. As a sanity check can
you do the following steps to force a rebuilt of the cache-
1.     Click - Change Display Settings
2.     Click – Advanced Settings on the lower left
3.     Click – List All Modes on the Adapter Tab of the Properties Sheet
4.     Change to one of the modes with 16-bit listed next to it.
5.     Click ok until you’re all the way out.
The steps are only temporary to rebuild the cache.
Also to rule out a corrupt Profile can you create a new user and logon as the new user?
Change the resolution mode back after testing:)

Last night I spent 8 hours typing a story that I had my heart set on for quite some time. I was very proud of myself and how everything was going. Well, after I got done with half of it I saved my document. I went to go open it this morning and every single character in the document has been turned into a space. I am not very thrilled with this. I have Google Searched after Google Search trying to find ways to:

1: Recover the document
2: Find the Windows 7 version of the TEMP folder so I can recover my lost time and effort
3: Just get my document back.

Does anyone have any clue that could help me with anything besides type it again?

Never heard of that happening. If it isn't in the autosave directory, then you are kind of screwed. I believe Word2003 uses the the %temp% variable for it's temp folder if you haven't turned on autosave.

By default, the %temp% folder is %userprofile%\appdata\local\temp.

This problem started "out of the blue" a couple of months ago. I had a tech look at it, and the only solution he came up with was to create a new user account, which worked. The problem has just come back. I can't find anything online to resolve it, so hopefully somebody here can help.

When trying to save a document (could be from OpenOffice or LibreOffice or even a PDF), the Save As dialog opens and then immediately freezes. There is no way to escape--I have to "X" out of it and the document app crashes.

No new software has been installed since creating the new user account. We use Norton 360 and also Malware Bytes for protection.

This is a business computer, so obviously we need to get this resolved ASAP. Please help!

I thought LibreOffice was a Ubuntu-only program?

There is a known issue with this happening in LibreOffice on Ubuntu- Try upgrading to the latest version.

Also, get the absolute latest version of Acrobat or Acrobat Reader you can find

I found this, which is related:

Save/Print as PDF crashes Word - Microsoft Community

Make the error show up again, force the program out, and show us the Event Logs from exactly when it happened, maybe there is something in there that can tell us why it is happening.

I know OpenOffice has a Windows version, is that the same as LibreOffice? You might be better off just buying a stand alone version of Microsoft Word, if you can- That way you can save to PDF's and there won't be any problems. Both Office 2010 and 2013 have good Save to PDF functions.

I hope this is the right sub-forum for this question.

Problem: in addition to the AutoRecover feature kicking in every 10 minutes, another auto backup is occurring every 60 seconds or so. I first noticed this 7 or 8 months ago when the document first rolled past 1,000 pages in length. Because of the length of the document, these now take 10 to 12 seconds to do their thing and this is hindering my ability to work with the document (entering additions and changes).

Current Settings:
Save Options
Checked are:
- Allow Background Saves
- Embed linguistic data
- Save AutoRecover info every (10 minutes)
- Embed smart tags

Question: is there any way I can change this auto backup sequence so that it only activates every 20 minutes or so? I am talking about the auto backup and not the AutoRecover, of course. It is one big annoyance right now because the document cannot be worked on when the auto backup is doing its thing.

Thanks, and hope someone can help,

I have done typing over the Internet for years. My regular computer is in being fixed and they have given me a loaner. The only strange thing about it is that when I used my own disk to load Word 2003 on the loaner computer, it came up with its own product code - you know those letters and numbers you have to put in -- anyway, I tried to enter my own, but it would not work. I had to use the ones that automatically came up. I don't know how they got there. The only thing I can think of is that the previous owner of the computer had loaded Word and that this was his product code!

Anyway, my work requires the use of templates that are merge documents. I have to install a certain SQL file in C:\WINDOWS\Temp. The file is there. I have checked. But when I open a document it says its looking for the SQL file in C:\WINDOWS\Temp -- but it can't find it.

I have tried and tried all morning - emailing the company back and forth in the UK and it just will not work. I am completely baffled. The file is there - the path is correct and yet it says Word cannot find it.

Does anyone have any suggestions? The only thing I can think of is that the previous owner - the owner of that product code - had some kind of administrative blocking on the computer.

Anyway, I am not making money and would like to figure it out so appreciate any help.

Hi Purley,

How did you get the SQL file into ...temp?

You need to have the SQL file point to a data source; the SQL is just a filter against a data source somewhere else and that connection needs to be established first.

Is the source database on another Server e.g. at the Company you are doing work for?

You should contact the company's IT admin to make sure you have connectivity.

Hi All,

I look after a small workgroup consisting of 6 systems. One of the workstations have a directory share that the others access. All systems are running XP with service pack 3 and all have MS Office 2003 installed. The issue I'm having is when my client tries accessing a word document from their workstation, the document takes a substantial time to do anything i.e. open, save, edit text etc. After a bit of research, Office Validation Tool looks like a likely reason for this problem. Everything I've indicates excel, but this effect word too?

Any help will be greatly appreciated - thanks in advance

I am having a issue with a couple of workstations in which if I click on a Word document icon on the desktop, in a email or in Windows Explorer, Word will launch but the document does not open. Once Word is open, I can click Open and navigate to the file and it opens up with no problem.

Both machines are running WinXP SP2. One has Microsoft Office 2003 and the other I just upgraded to Office 2007 basic (it was having the same issue with Office 2003 so I tried to upgrade to see if that would fix it). The one that is running Office 2003 worked fine until I uninstalled and reinstalled Office 2003 to correct a email issue I was having.

I have tried resetting the extensions in Win Explorer to have any .doc file extension open with winword.exe, I have renamed the DATA folder in the Registry, I have tried detect and repair Word from the Help menu in Word, I have tried re-registering Word, I have uninstalled and reinstalled Office....I'm not sure what to do next.

I know at least one of the machines came pre-installed with Office 2007 trial version. I'm not sure about the other one. Could "remnants" of that program be causing issues?

Any thoughts? Let me know. Thank you.
