Powersurge blues! Please help!

Q: Powersurge blues! Please help!

Recently my computer experienced a powersurge, and restarted itself, Now it runs graphicly intensive Programs like Games Slow, with noticible choppy animation, yet in Halflife my framerate remains well over 100.

Im running a P3 550 with 128 megs of ram with a voodoo 3 3000 PCI card. Can you help me with a solution to this problem? thanks

Preferred Solution: Powersurge blues! Please help!

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Powersurge blues! Please help!

Hi, Ryan--

Let's hope the power glitch just messed up some settings and not any hardware. Check your display settings, make sure your Voodoo card is listed properly in Device Manager and that the display properties are all set for the color depth and graphics acceleration you have used in the past.

You might reload your video card drivers while you're at it; or download the latest updates (a better idea, really).

Check your system resources and see if you're running low; if that's the case then you could reload Win95 or repair/reload Win98 to see if that restores the memory management to its proper configuration.

My old P-75 got knocked out by several power outages over the years, and it never developed any problems--I hope your's is easily fixable. Post back and tell us how it goes.

So I have a computer that just started getting error messages talking about a power surge in a hub port. When this happens the computer freezes up, sometimes for up to 10 minutes and the computer gives a continuous low pitched beep. If I can manage to click on the error message before it goes away after the computer becomes responsive again a window comes up listing all the usb ports and claiming that there is an unknown usb device that is causing the power surge. I've tried clicking on the option to close down the port but it has no effect. I've unplugged all usb devices but it still happens, and it happens often, so much that the computer is unusable. Often the sticky keys prompt will also come up after the power surge is over although no keys were ever pressed.

At first I considered a failing power supply, but I'm not so sure. Just now the computer was started and went straight to the welcome screen without loading anything. No screen to access the bios or run in safe mode. Just straight to the welcome screen. I'm not really sure what to do as I don't want to purchase a new computer. Please help.

hi all...

so here's the situation. (p4 2.4GHz, ASUS P4PE MOBO)

the outlet my computer is connected to was shut suddenly shut down and on again while my computer was on. i am connected to a power surge.

upon restart, the bios hardware monitor gives an error msg
"Hardware Monitor found an error. Enter Power setup menu for details"

so i go into Hardware Monitor and notice that 2 things are in red:

CPU fan speed = is 0
Chassis Fan Speed = 958 RPM

now, my fan is clearly going so thats not right.

at this point i suspect the Power supply, but all voltages in the Voltage monitors read correctly:
3.34V, 5.02V, 11.96/12.03 V. moreover, i hear and see that my cd rom are working.

so, i go ahead and tell bios to IGNORE the 2 FAN speed errors and only then my bios continues on.

instead of a windows OS startup screen, i get "PRESS ANY KEY TO REBOOT"

when trying to boot from cd-rom i get,

so im not sure what the problem is, is the very initial problem that my bios though my fan speed = 0?

if so why? is it powersupply? motherboard?

i thought a power surge protector was suppose to prevent this.

if anyone has any idea, PLEASE let me know,

A:DOH! can powersurge cause BOOT FAIL?!

so after more research, here are some new conclusion and questions that may help.

essentially, there are 2 issues...

1. why is my BIOS telling me that the CPU and CHASSIS FAN SPEED are incorrect?

---> we can rule out the power supply since voltage readings are what they should be. i'm thinking this implies that something is wrong with my motherboard.

2. the OS is unable to boot from CD or Harddrive.

---> now i'm thinking that #2 is really a continuation of #1. if there is something wrong with my MOBO, then i assume i'm not going to be able to boot normally. this would also seemingly explain why i couldn't boot from cd rom. can i rule out an issue with my harddrive for the time being since broken harddrive or not, i should still be able to boot from my cd-rom (I REALLY HOPE NOTHING IS WRONG WITH MY HD)

so here are some ideas i had for possible tests / solutions... ( i could def use some advice here)

i was going to remove the Clear RTC RAM jumper on the motherboard. its the little jumper by the lithion battery that "clears the CMOS memory of date, time, and system setup parameters" and reset to default system settings.

one thing to note is that last night, i just randomly removed that battery, i forgot i removed it, and continued to turn the system off and on as normal. i didn't notice a single change in what was already happening.... that battery is suppose to power the RAM in CMOS and removing it altogether cau... Hello there,

Should I get 2 640g black HDDs and run them on R0 or get 2 640g blues and run them on R0?

Most people would say blacks but I got mixed signals from some people that 2 500/640g blues would be better some how..

So I'm stuck between 3 choices>>
2 640g Blacks on R0 + 2 1T greens for storage

2 640g Blues on R0 + 2 1T greens for storage

2 500g Blues on R0 + 2 1T Greens for storage + an extra 2g ram for my system (I only have 2g of ram right now which is working great)

So what do you think is better, 2 640g blacks, 2 500g blues or 2 640g blues??

I know all about the TLER thing and I have already made a DOS USB, so I'm all set for turning TLER-ON just incase it wasn't turned on by manufacture..

A:2 640g blacks on R0, 2 500g blues or 2 640g blues?

What is the reason that you are wanting to run RAID0? Is it for insanely fast performance? If so, have you considered using an SSD for your OS drive and then just a couple of mechanical drives for your storage. Reason I ask is that access time on SSD's is almost instantaneous and will provide a much greater improvement to OS performance based on this then any RAID config will.

If I had to pick between Blue and Black, I would go with Black as they have a 5 year warranty versus a 3 year warranty.

In the last few days, I have failed to get sp2 to properly install on my machine. It nears the completion stage, then freezes my computer. I went to M$ site for online help, and found it not extremely helpful. In following M$ instructions to uninstall, you get many warnings that indicate much of your software "might" not work normally after, yet you must do it if you did not get a complete installation. I should have heeded the warnings, but had to proceed because the partially installed sp2 was freezing my system. So I used add/remove to remove it successfully, however on removal I believe it took items out of the registry that were required, ie. almost all my drivers were removed (graphics, sound, printer, raid array and more) So I began reinstalling drivers that windows did not find on its own, but the machine, while operable, was dreadfully slow and quirky, so I did a system restore to the day before sp2 installation, and I am back to normal with sp1. My question, Should I try again in safemode with their free CD, (This was suggested to me by M$ as they believe my computer running zonealarm 4.5, NAV03, popupstopper, and Spybot S/D may have some conflicts with SP2) Or should I be happy with a working computer that has the above mentioned security 3rd party programs that may be better than what is in SP2. In other words, if you already paid for the security enhancements, why does anyone need SP2? Thanks for any insight Gary

Just made a fool of myself by paying £5 (8 US dollars) down the market for a secondhand Blu-ray disc called "10,000 B.C" (cavemen v sabre-tooth tigers etc, don't laugh) but neither my DVD player nor my PC drive will recognise it. (I thought I was buying a proper DVD or CD, I've never even heard of Blu-ray).
I daren't take it back to try for a swap or refund, so is there any way I can make it play, for example by somehow extracting the data and burning it to a DVD or CD?

A:Blu-ray blues

BluRay drives use a different laser than DVD or CD to read the disc.

The movie file could be any size up to 50Gb on a BluRay disk.

First Step you would need to use a BluRay drive to read the disk
Step two requires illegal to use in the USA and UK software. Which our rules forbid discussion of.
Third step You would need serious computing power or lots of time to compress the BluRay resolution down to DVD resolution.
BluRay is 1080i or 1080p resolution and DVD is 480P (i) so 1920 x 1080 resolution to 720 by 480 resolution.

My suggestion is return it, if not possible sell it and buy the DVD version.

Third option if you have a HDTV is buy a BluRay player and start watching in videos in HD.

I'm sorry I can't give you better news.

Problem: awtss.dll and sstwa.ini files that I cant get rid of. There are probably some more files causing my system to hang and have multiple errors. I've tried to unload them as well as a couple different Vundu fixes but with no luck. (I'm not even sure if it's Vundu that is the problem) I've used AdAware, Spybot S&D, Spyware Guard, and McAfee for A/V on this machine... they've found nothing.

MSConfig wont allow me to boot completely into safe mode, it keeps giving me errors and forces Selective Startup while not allowing me to uncheck the boxes for system.ini or win.ini - which are blank when you open them anyways! When I try to boot to safe mode using F8 it hangs on... you guessed it... Mup.sys.

System hasn't BSD on me while running. It BSD's when I boot. Then the only way I can get back in is from recovering an image I have stored. This works in 2 out 3 attempts. But on the next reboot I may have to recover my image again (using MS backup). I have a dmp file that I am going to upload. I don't even know how to open it let alone analyze it. Maybe some one can point me to the problem. Right now I suspect my graphics adapter.

Well, if you suspect your graphics driver, try updating the drivers.

I can't see real cause. Maybe one of the experts can give a better solution.

Try opening an elevated command prompt and running sfc /scannow. That will scan for bad system files, repairing as necessary.

Hello Friends
My problem may sound silly, but i'm really fed up of window attitude.
I run a dialup with good speed / having a p4 machine and lots of ram/.
Since the day i installed xp Pro i do not get proper speeds on the net. Pages take ages to load and i have to go for the refresh button time and again, it happens with both XP Pro and Home Edition. The desired page may open or disappears after a while with a page not found if clicked on a link. F5 button is all the help i need ro refresh again and again but sometimes no use. I disabled the QOS(Quality of service) which XPAntispy claims robs you of your bandwith, but still i'm stuck with the same problem...pages refuse to open except google. Why does Xp behave so strange with TCP/IP ,as Xp is more stable than its predecessors.I installed the software many times but of no use. I searched the net for a solution but all i get is connection optimizers which are of no use, nobody has ever asked this problem anywhere.

While the story is different when i install ME and use the net i get good speeds and pages load faster now you guys maybe scratching your hair ,,,yes i did the same. I cant understand when xp is superior why it is so inferior online and the same lower verion WinMe is faster.

Can anyone please suggest and help me our on how can i solve the problem and use one OS instead of using 2 different os on diff partitions and wasting precious space. And i'm exhausted installing the OS.

Hiya and welcome

Are you using the built in firewall, or are you using one of your own? What happens if you disable it (just to find the fault):

Also, go to Tools | Internet Options. General tab. Under Delete Files, delete offline content.

go to http://forum.aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.zip , and download 'Hijack This!'.
Unzip, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, save the log somewhere, and please copy & paste its contents to the forum.

It will possibly show other issues deserving our attention, but most of what it lists will be harmless or even required, so do NOT fix anything yet.

This is most likely a hardware problem - but it can be a compatibility issue or a low-level driver issue (less likely).

BUT, let's have a look at the driver output....
Please note that the first driver mentioned is sptd.sys - a component of Daemon Tools or one of the Alcohol % programs. This driver is a known cause of BSOD's in Win7 systems. Please:
- uninstall the program
- then use this free tool to ensure that the offending sptd.sys driver is removed from your system: DuplexSecure - FAQ

I have 768 K in Ram and a 2K processor. When I am connected in video conference with my son it literally sucks the bottom out of my processor. I cannot even call up Windows Task Manager. When not connected in video conference I can still do other things.

I actually have a few small problem that were doubled since downloading sp2. I have a 4 year old desktop running xp pro that maybe 4 months ago started giving me a "restrictions" message when I attempt to go to tools/internet options in explorer. The message reads "This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator." Another tech forum advised me to check for spyware which I did, found, and removed. However, the message still persists, though I can get to internet options by way of the desktop icon. Another suggestion was to reformat, which is what I am considering. THEN I load sp2 and the generic host processors get real busy according to my zone alarm pro. The pc is a bit sluggish and the word "professional" has disappeared from the windows startup screen. If I deny internet access to any programs w/ zone alarm, explorer does not work. If I use the internet lock on z.a.pro for extended periods of time, I cannot connect back to the internet w/o a warm boot. My wife also is having problems w/ sp2 on her new Toshiba laptop. since the download, the wifi won't connect and the method for opening pictures on her camera's memory stick has changed. Sp2 has made life more difficult. Any Ideas? Thanks.

A:SP 2 Blues!

I dont know how many people feel here, but from research I believe theres better firewalls then ZA. Blackice, Zygote is to name a few.

Have you checked to see if the internet options have changed at all? There is a few "default" buttons you can push to set the options back to normal.

And most people need more then one spyware remover, because ive never met one that finds them all. Recommanded ones are Ad-aware, Search-&-Destroy, Xoftspy.

And I also had problems with ZA doing weird things to my comp before too. So, like ive told everyone else, try going to http://housecall.trendmicro.com .. its an online scanner, and its free. Its updated everyday, so it has the latest viruses, trojans, and adaware.

And you can post up a hijackthis log, to let the professionals of that type of stuff to look at for their suggestions.

and if all else fails, try tapping f8 while your computer is loading, and going to "last known good working configuration" or whatever it says. (cant remember.. to early in the morning for me lol) You will be able to tell which one it is

Other then all that, I have heard SP2 has been hard on everyone else. So you may just want to stop and wait for MS to update SP2.

XP will not boot, there are no error messages, it just stops after XP loading page. Have tried all the Safe Mode options but still stops at the same point. Thought I would get round the problem by installing a second bootable drive, and copy my files over using explorer. All seemed well until I realised that I cannot access 'My Document' files as access is blocked due password I set at the time of installation (I think).
Is there a way of overcoming 'access denied' so that I can copy my files over, or another way of getting the faulty drive to boot as everything seems to be in tact on the drive?

Any advice would be appreciated.

A:XP Blues

If it boots into Safe Mode, then Windows isn't totally hosed. You most likely have a corrupt driver. You can try running System Restore and changing back to a time before the problem started. If not, you can try booting from your XP CD and perform a repair.

I am in the process of building my first computer. I have a Gigabyte GA-5AX main board with an AMD k63 400 processor, an ATI Xpert 128, and a stick of 64mg pc100 RAM. I set all jumpers but one, that being the VCC3 Conector. I have read the entire manual and can not find what this jumper is for, or how it should be set. It's a 4 pin JP11 jumper that the manual says can be set for either vcc3(psu){-}vcc3(mb)1/2-3/4 short..or, vcc3(psu){x}vcc3(mb)1/3-2/4 short....
I know that for some reason my machine is totally unstable with 64mg of PC100 RAM when running it at 3.3 volts. Unreal but true, if I switch to 3.5 volts it still has problems but it runs much better. Any ideas?

A:GA-5AX Blues

Apparently there are a lot of revisions to this motherboard... You may want to double check your settings against the list available here:

I downloaded and looked through the manual - I have no idea what the VCC3 is for either, but it may be related to JP13, which is VCC Voltage setting. The manual sure doesn't say in what way they might be related though. I would just leave it at the factory setting.

You can do it with CLASSES.

Your extenal css would contain something like this:

A:link {font-weight:bold; color: #990000; text-decoration:none}
A:visited {font-weight:bold; color: #990000; text-decoration:none}
A:visited:hover {font-weight:bold; color: #336699; text-decoration:none}
A.nav:link {color:#336699; font-weight:bold; text-decoration:none}

A.nav:hover {color:#990000; font-weight:bold; text-decoration:none}

"normal" links would be the default...but you could call your secondary class in a link like this:

Things started going bad when I booted the pc the next day, it slowed down getting the welcome screen that hanged for a couple of minutes the mouse pointer froze and could only get it going again by unplugging it from the usb port and reconnecting it (have to do this everytime to get it to work now). After the welcome screen I only get the desktop background with no icons, it hangs for a while then the icons appear and only some of the icons on the right side of the taskbar appear at first then after a few minutes the rest struggle to show. The speaker icon has gone, went to "sounds and audio properties" and all is greyed out so I couldn't do much there.

Not much that I can do in general realy, system restore, defrag and most other utilities don't function, I can't install new programs. Ran a scan with BitDefender and Ewido but nothing found, tried Ewido in safe mode also and no luck however BitDefender refused to run in safe mode.

Who installed it?Assuming hardware is OK it sounds like you may need to reinstall XP.http://www.tweakhound.com/xp/installxp/installXP1.htm for details. In particular, UNPLUG your network cable until Windows is installed. Then take restore point(s) before installing anti-virus & anti-spyware software. Now, some dvds that have played in the drive in the past won't play now. I haven't updated anything pertaining to the dvd drive or software that I'm using. I don't think its the sotware, because MOST of my dvds play in the drive.

I went to the pioneer website to download the latest firmware, but they want me to do some crazy things to update it. I have to reconnect the dvd drive on the secondary IDE as a master, and then boot up and install the firmware that way. I will NOT do this, as its illogical. I’m having a problem trying to figure out an installation of a second HDD on a Windows 2000 Pro.
1. The second HDD has been detected successfully by the CMOS settings as a slave in the primary IDE (Storage drive).

2. The HDD was formatted and partitioned when it did load fine into windows.

The problem that I have is that at start up it reads that the HDD is set up properly, but before windows loads up it shows this error (Disk I/O error status=00000) and then windows hangs and does not load.
The question that I have is what I’m I doing wrong? The HDD is in good shape, the CMOS accepted it correctly, all jumpers and connections are correct. It seems that the problem could be with Windows 2000 Pro.
I really could use some good advice with this conflict.

OK, so into my all-singing, all-dancing new machine, I decided to install a wireless network card, namely a D-Link AirPlus ExtremeG+, part code DWL-G520+.

And it broke stuff, BIG time.

Installed as per instructions, so drivers first, then card. Worked okay until reboot. When I rebooted, the "Preparing Network Connections" segment took about 5 minutes, and upon loading, any vaguely "system" related window (e.g. Network Connections, Add/Remove programs, Program Files or even the contents of C:\WINNT itself) were totally blank. I took the card out and the problems went away.

So next step - put the card back in, problems came back again. So this time I booted into Safe Mode and disabled it there. Now when I boot back into Normal Mode, none of the icons work - I can select them, but can't double click. A friend suggests I clear out my startup menu entirely, and this helps. But now the problem is that my system reboots itself after two minutes.

To try and get around this I've upgraded to Windows XP, but the only difference is that it now TELLS me it's going to shut down, apparently due to the "Remote Procedure Call service terminating unexpectedly". And before anyone cries out "A-HA!", no, I do NOT have the msblast worm. And just as an aside, Windows XP's ability to auto configure a network sucks ***.

I am connecting (trying to at least) the wireless cards to a D-Link Router of the same spec - DI-624+ part c... Read more

Personally I am no fan of D-Link (they sell older-generation gear).
For wireless, I would go for Buffalo Airstation, maybe a bit more expensive but definitely top-class.
I prefer cabling and wired my whole house last year (5 PCs all over the place).

I'd start by checking the cables and the jumpers carefully. Also, check in the BIOS setup that auto mode is set for all the IDE channels.

Ok due to some probs, i cant really upgrade to DSL. So that should clear up the "Switch to highspeed" speech that people get. Anyhow i have a problem, but i cant figure out if its my modem or my ISP. For awhile now, my connection has slowly been getting worse. A few months ago, i was able to play games like Halo and Svencoop online with out too much lag. And im talkin about servers that hold up to 13 or 14 people at most. My usal ping at most would be 230-280 at most depending on the server. But now, i cant even get into a server without lagging myself off. I dont think its anything normal, because everyone else seems to be doing ok. I cant stay in a server with more then 8 people now without lagging myself into a coma.

It's sad i know, but i used to connect at alittle close to 50.0kbps, now its 38.6kbps. Ive re-installed the modem drivers and i just dunno. At times i get error messages that say "Remote computer did not respond in a timely manner" or "PPV or PPP link settings" or something like that were wrong. Other times, i will connect, but my internet wont be going. It says im connected, but it seems like there is just no communication going through.

Any help would be appreciated.

Im hoping to get some help from someone whos more experianced than me in this field. I have been trying unsuccessfully for about 2 weeks now to reinstal a system with Windows XP Pro with Service pack 1a embeded in the install disk.

I have had a rash of problems and im wondering if they are connected, and how to fix them.

One note first I have tested all hardware against the HCL and all of my hardware is listed.

I originally installed this system on a full 200 gb hd, There had been no problems at all with this installation but it was felt that data would be safer if there were partitions and a full reinstall on the system.

I tried to reinstall this system, It had been installed with as fully updated version of windows as was available due to downloads of all recent updates. I was asked to reinstall onto a 200gb WD Caviar hard drive but instead of loading on a full drive to make at least 2 partions on the drive, a 20 gig for windows and a secondary for data. I was very displeased when the first time i tried to load on this 20 gb partition i recieved an error that was a BAD_POOL_CALLER error. I tried to reformating the partition and reloading all the install files but I simply recieved a blue screen with the same error on it but this time instead of during the installing devices phase it happened during the phase after you choose the network settings. I tried installing on a different hard drive and that seemed to work so I wanted to try loading it again on my original hard... Read more

I've just completed my first new build using intel i5, P8Z68V-Pro M/board, 4 x 4Gb DDR3 1333Mhz corsair mem, Corsair Force 3 SSD, 2Tb SeagateHDD.
Perfect at first power up. (HDD disconnected) Set date/time and Optical drive as 1st boot. installed Windows7 to SSD allowing W7 to partition and align, which appered to go well. At this point I noticed the pc was only registering 16Gb of memory and I wrongly thought I'd bought 32Mb. I turned off, removed 1 stick and discovered I'd actually bought 4 x 4Gb.

I rebooted with no problem then realised I had not reinserted fourth stick - turned of - installed and rebooted. Once I had carried out the mem test with internal botton all was fine and booted into windows - I updated and rebooted - all good.
I installed M/S office 2010 (all new versions) - all good. Then updated - all good including online access.

Today I was going to connect the HDD and transfer all files but when I came to boot this morning I was confronted with the message 'Reboot & select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device & press key'.

I have tried to run Repair disc which I ran off in the course of software install but it had no effect and I also tried running Windows 7 again selecting Repair W7 but had no joy there either. I looked in the Bios and the boot sequence remains as SSD 1st boot. Every time I reboot I receive the same message and I have checked all connections several times. Clearly the PC is n... Read more

I have a 40 Gig hard drive that I decided I had to finally reformat after too much sludge accumulated in the last few years. I'm running WIN2K Pro with FAT. Actually, I had it divided into two partitions, C (OS and programs for the most part) and D (data). I backed up all the data on D so it was empty.

Yesterday I thought I'd try a straight reinstall of windows first, to see if that would suffice. Put the WIN2K disk in the drive, clicked "install" and must have been slightly out to lunch -- I didn't notice it was installing on the D partition.

After the two hours of overwhelming rabid excitement that is a windows install, during the last reboot I finally realized -- when I was prompted to choose which "Windows 2000" to boot to -- that I had a "dual boot" system now. One, a pretty corrupt mess that basically doesen't work at all (C drive version) and one clean (I think) version on the D partition.

My question is: how can I "do away" with the version on the C partition? Would this work:
Format the C partition (thus deleting everything), then Image the D partition (I've installed PowerQuest Drive Image on the "good" D drive) and copy it to the now empty formatted C partition, then format the D partition so it's clean.

What would I end up with?
Thanks for any input!

I recently bought a laptop off of ebay in order to fix it up. I got it in. As is, the laptop will boot if the cd drive is out, but shut down once it tries to get past the splash screen. Alternatively, with the cd drive in, the laptop will stay on the splash screen with the cd drive spinning, but will shut down in a moment. I cannot get into the bios with the Cd drive in. Any ideas of what the problem is?

It sounds like it is trying and trying to boot from the cd drive. Try putting a bootable cd you could put in the drive to see what happens.

a Samsung SyncMaster 931c monitor has a hard time checking in. The whole display "blinks", trying to render the signal, but it fails to do so, so it tries again. Though the display remains generally black during this process, a very mild flickering sound can be heard, and a gentle change in the color of the entire display area can be observed. This probably is the result of getting the signal itself, but failing to render it.

There is a blue light at the right corner of the device - embedded into the on/off button - and it is activated/deactivated automatically during this ritual. A little amount of time, maybe 2-3 minutes are needed to be given to the device, so the monitor finally bites on the signal and renders the image. From that point on, the image seems to be perfect. It might worth mentioning that there are occurrences when the device manages to come up with a shallow rendition of the signal, - stripes in the image, everyday average UFO transmissions, etc. - but, as if it would be aware that the exhibited image quality is not acceptable, it dismisses the result of the attempt instead. Please note that eventually the monitor is able to deliver a rendition of the signal which seems to be perfect, yet time is needed to be given to it so it can get its bearings. It does not seem to be a path advisable to take, as the monitor certainly finds no easy joy in these sequences of hard times. Earlier than this, the device had no difficulties rendering the sig... First off, if anyone can solve this problem, I will forever be your admirer!

I have a medical transcription business and print on continuous label paper using a dot matrix printer. The labels (without the pinfeed edges) are 8" wide and 2" high, but continuous, like I said. I was using a Panasonic dot matrix and the driver was IBM Proprinter x24e. Through trial-and-error, research, talking to people, I finally hit upon that combination of printer and driver that would allow me to set 0 (zero) margins, top and bottom. This allowed me to get 11 lines of text on each 2" label.

In the fall, I upgraded to Vista. Alas, on Vista, the IBM proprinter x24e driver was not available. I have searched for this driver and supposedly downloaded it, but apparently it didn't work. I have written Microsoft and was told this driver is not available on Vista. I came to understand while using this IBM driver that it is used for a lot of printers because it is so generic.

Therefore, I bought an Epson LQ-590 dot matrix so that it would work with Vista. This was last fall 2007.

I use WordPerfect as my application (and did the the other printer too.)

Here are my label specs: Label sheet size 8"x12"; label size 8" wide x 2" high; Labels per page, 1 column, 6 rows. Everything else on that page is 0 except for left and right margins.

However, when I print, it leaves the top line of text off every label sheet. In other words, it leaves the first line off l... Read more

My buddy was drunk and flipped my laptop off my desk, broke the screen.

I bought a replacement LCD panel.
I took off the bezel and removed the old LCD panel, and replaced it with the new.

I'm confident my connections were snug and fit.

when the maintenance was all said and done, I rebooted my computer and it displayed everything in 4bit color and some nasty huge resolution I think it was 600x400 or what ever it is.

figuring it was a driver problem I uninstalled my drivers and everything went back to normal resolution, however there was the lag of a computer working from a graphics card with no drivers, that nasty choppy sluggish lag.

I reinstalled my drivers and it went back to the nasty resolution and display color.

I again uninstalled and rebooted my machine and then tried to load them again, to no avail it was nasty yet again..

I rebooted it for the third time with the graphics drivers installed and it took an eternity to boot, in fact it never booted it also stopped throwing my display from the LCD screen to my 26in monitor , after some more software tinkering it began to load, but give me only a black screen with some audio. After installing vista.

So now I'm stuck with a machine that boots to a black screen, boots in safe mode fine, but with graphics drivers or with out I cannot get the damn thing to boot normally.
