Cell phone tethering on Vista

Q: Cell phone tethering on Vista

I have a strange tethering problem that I can't figure out. I have tried tethering over USB with my Sprint Touch Pro on several XP PCs and it works fine. On my Vista laptop, it mostly works. I have no problems with normal things like internet browsing and the speed is good. However, I'm having major issues when I try to run a game, Final Fantasy XI (FFXI).

The issues don't seem to be network related. Everything about the game slows down, even things that don't depend on your internet connection, like animations in the mens. The game is impossible to play -- in fact it was so non-responsive I wasn't even able to type a single letter. I've never seen anything like it.

FFXI is designed to be playable over a dial-up modem, and the game servers cap your transfer rate even if you have broadband. The game normally works fine on tethering; for the last few years I was able to play it my old T-Mobile MDA with Edge speeds. It also works with my new Touch Pro on the XP systems I have tried. So it seems like the problem is with Vista.

In addition, I used a program called WMWifiRouter which shares the connection over wifi instead of USB. I can play the game with no problems using this method, but I'd prefer to use a wired connection.

The issue with FFXI behaves very much like when you have a runaway process taking up 100% of your CPU. But I checked it and there is 60-80% idle time with FFXI hovering around 10%.

I'm wondering if maybe there is some conflict between FFXI and the USB network driver used on Vista for tethering. I'm at a loss as to how to troubleshoot this further. Anyone have any ideas?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hey all!

As the thread title says, I need this device driver and I need it fast. As I don't have an active broadband connection anymore I am trying to connect to the Internet using my Android device as a modem (USB tethering). But I am curently stuck here. It seems I need a driver for this to work.

I am using Windows Vista 64-bit with SP2 and a HTC Desire as modem. When I connect the phone Windows is looking for drivers for a device named 'Android Phone'. It fails to find it and asks me what to do. I obviously can't let it search for it on the Internet. And I don't have a disc with drivers, I didn't get one.

I am using the Android phone to type this. As I have limited screen size and no mouse or keyboard, it's really hard for me to do a Google search to track down this driver issue. As far as I can tell, this should work out of box on Windows Vista. It seems that only Windows XP users are having this issue. Even on the Google Help it says that Windows XP users will need a special driver to enable USB tethering. But then again, why am I having this problem on Windows Vusta then?

I need to get back online fast, as I have bills to pay and things like that.

Thanks in advance!

A:Solved: Request: USB tethering device driver for 'Android Phone' on Windows Vista 64-

Hi again! I just wanna let you know that I have solved this little problem. As it turns out it does pay off reading the manual. Also, it is not completely true that Windows Vista comes with appropriate drivers pre-installed. You still need to install these, even on Windows Vista, and on Windows 7. But I still wish that things like these could just work out of the box. But for that reason alone, I may need to switch to a different operating system.

The solution was very simple. I did need to install the device drivers. But I didn't need to download and install them separately, they came pre-packed as part of the HTC Sync tool. And this thing comes cleverly stored on the MicroSD of the phone. So I just installed that and I was able to use the phone as a modem. It worked very good. The Internet connection did hang up on me once, but after a reboot of the phone it worked again and I was able to do my business effortlessly.

The thing is, I have terminated my old subscription, and I completely forgot about it and when they were supposed to shut down my connection. So it just happened, unexpectedly. But I have ordered a new Internet subscription with my new carrier and I am expecting it to be activated in couple of minutes.

Thanks anyway!

P.s. Just for the record, the HTC Sync tool is stored on the root of the memory card, the MicroSD card of the phone. It should say something like 'HTCSync_2.0.28.exe'. Just plug the phone to the computer in USB mass storage mode ... Read more

I hope I have the right forum here.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1520 that I recently clean installed windows vista on after getting a bad Trojan Horse.

Since the clean install, I've been unable to send pictures from my phone via bluetooth to my computer. I was able to do this before the clean install.

I have "allow bluetooth devices to connect to this computer" checked as well as "allow bluetooth devices to find this computer". My phone also shows up in my devices under network and sharing......bluetooth.

I have everything set up. My phone is paired with my computer but when I try to send a picture from phone to comp via bluetooth, I get the message on my phone "transfer failed".

I also have NIS 2009 on this laptop and connect through a wireless router. The only difference from before the clean install as far as the router is concerned is that I now have the router secured using WPA-2. I have no idea if that would effect bluetooth at all but I would assume not.

Any ideas?

Unfortunately, despite my best efforts to find a better alternative, where I live my only option for unlimited internet with any speed whatsoever is to tether my DROID DNA phone to my computer using the app PdaNet. I've been doing this for over a year now without any problems. I have an unlimited data plan through Verizon and although I only have 3G at my house, it is still far better than anything else I've found.

Recently I started playing the online game World of Warcraft. Obviously the speed isn't ideal, but it worked perfectly fine for about 3 weeks. One night the game started to get really slow and after a minute or two would freeze up entirely. When this happened, I would have an error message on my phone at the PdaNet screen that read "Communication with client has been broken." Despite restarting things, this continued to happen. I assumed that it was because the weather was bad outside, but the problem didn't go away the next day. When I noticed that my internet speed when browsing the web had slowed down as well I figured that although I supposedly have unlimited data, that Verizon must have slowed me down for crossing over a certain download barrier. I've heard that they do this.

So this went on for the next week until the first of the month when my data was reset through Verizon. Well I'm still having the same issue when trying to play the game. It will work alright for anywhere from 30 seconds to 10 minutes, and then al... Read more

Hello,

I purchased Motorola Phone Tools and a USB cable to transfer some of my mp3's to my cell phone. When I uploaded them successfully, the quality was greatly reduced and I can't figure out a way to modify them - it sounds very scratchy when I set it as a ringtone. I don't see any option that the program gives me to modify bitrate, etc (my friend uses BitPim which is not compatable with my phone, but his ringers are much higher quality). If anyone can help me increase the quality, I'd appreciate it!

some extra info in the "preview" section when I'm about to send it to my phone:

44,100 Hz
Quality: 16 bit stereo

Thanks!

Without any clue as to model numbers, its a hard call to offer constructive advice, but the Palm unit will allow the export (from the PC based copy on Palm Desktop) of the addresses and numbers to a .csv file.

If your new phone has connectivity to the PC, then it may be able to import them, but that would depend widely on the model and your own ability to connect it to a PC.

Alternatively the Palm will usually allow IR (InfaRed) beaming of the addresses, and if your new phone will receive IR data then that may be possible.

Hello,

According to my iTunes I am able to download music and then transfer it to my iPod. My question is am I able to create my own file to then transfer the music to my cell phone as a ringer? Do I have to somehow change the file extension, and what are the directions to transfer it to the phone.

Again, I understand if this is not legal, and I know you should able to tell me the legality. I was just wondering. As always you guys know everything there is to know, so any help would be appreciated.

Thank you for you time and help,
Ben

A:Cell Phone Ringers

Yes, after you pay for music it is yours to do what you want with it (except copy and sell it/copy it and give it to another person)

I suggest 3gupload.com. IT DOES cost some money, but you can make your own wallpapers, ringtones and the such and upload them into your phone.

As for what type of file to convert it to, I would need your phone. Some higher model phones can play MP3. Others play a .mmf or .smaf format. Every phone is different

CAVEAT EMPTOR!

Sad tale to be aware of; unlocked phones may be severely crippled in the features available on another providers network!!

Purchase Motorola V600 (Quad band) GSM phone for extended trip to Europe. (Domestic uses 840+1900, Europe 900+1800)

Phone was already unlocked (shipped locked to T-Mobile however) in the box, and I only needed to swap the SIM card from Cingular into this phone --- works great, except no Email nor Browser support!

Called Cingular and we got TXT messaging working (but I don't normally use it), but we could not configure Email/Browser to access the Cingular network at all. The T-Mobile software is so different, there's no settings for things like IP-Address and Port numbers!

Called T-Mobile (1-209-904-2030) -- catch 22, not a T-Mobile user and therefore can't even access the phone.

Called Motorola Support (1-800-331-6456). WOW! Service person was nice enough, but spouted official Company rhetoric.
"The phone was manufactured for T-Mobile and with that contract, the T-Mobile software was installed. It is illegal for us to uninstall or replace that software."

1) It's MY phone, not T-Mobile's
2) I choose the service provider I need
3) said contract is collusion and conspiracy by the manufacturer and the service provider(s) here domestically (US) to force either a new device purchase and or to coerce a specific service provider.

I can confirm the bit about European cells.
Bought (as an upgrade) 3 tri-band cells, from and locked into the Vodaphone network (in Ireland).
Having spent enough money (i.e. over ?130.- per cell) on my previous Vodaphone pay-as-you-go phone-bills, all I needed to do then was call Vodaphone customer service with the cells' IMEI-numbers, they gave me the unlock-codes on the spot!
The cells are happily used now in Pennsylvania on the Cingular network, without any problems or limitations.
They were 2x Motorola E770V and 1x Nokia 3120.

I know its not your typical first question but I'm wondering if there's any way to get Windows 7 to see a connected and tethered Windows 6.1 Smartphone to use it as the modem versus the built in PC hardware ?

Most of what I found was of the "yep, sometimes DIY projects go awry - you need a pro" nature - sorry. Nokia has a specs pdf that might help you (I recently had to do a system restore and my PC is slowly rebuilding itself and all the upgrades, and I couldn't get Adobe to work).
They will also look at out-of-warranty phones with this proviso (from the site)
"If the out of warranty device is "repairable", you will be contacted by the Nokia Authorized Service Center with a repair quote before the repair can begin. Prices vary by product and the nature of the repair. If the device is deemed "unrepairable" it will be returned to you without prior notification."
Sorry - maybe another can help more.

So I just moved into a new apartment. It's a really nice place, even has it's own fitness center for the community, a car wash, and free coffee (will explain later with pictures I shall post... but not in this thread...)

Anyways, the building's structure here totally messes up any signals inside the apartment except for right by the window of my room, I get a bar of 3G signal. (And I mean RIGHT there... like press the cellphone against the glass...)

So I went online looking for a cellphone repeater to buy... but there are so many models, many of them ridiculously expensive (or they seem to be...).

I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for what to buy.
I just want to use my cellphone indoors... not out on the porch. I use voice, texting, and data services, thus I really would like to make it so that 3G signal from AT&T's tower gets there.
The apartment is 1400 square feet. (Yes it's huge, but there are 6 people living here though...)
I want to hopefully be able to use the cellphone relatively anywhere in the apartment.
If I can't have that, I'll settle for the 2 back bedrooms (mine and my mother / sister's bedrooms).

Any information on these things would be useful. I don't want to spend the 150 - 600$ and find out that it doesn't do what I want it to.

As I understand it, I should be able to link my new Win8 touch screen notebook (Asus X202e) with my Android cel phone (Moto Droid X2) so that I can quickly and easily exchange photos and files - I think I should be able to see the entire contents of one device on the other?

Anyway, I've successfully set up my Bluetooth, 'found' my cel phone, paired it to my PC and made the connection. I can 'see' the phone on the computer (Win8 says it's working correctly) but I can't see anything on the phone on my PC nor the other way round

I watched a simple 'how to' on Youtube and it showed a desktop icon for the phone and when they clicked on that it showed every folder on the phone and you could search through the phone on your desktop and request any file you liked to be transferred. I don't have that icon, nor can I figure out how to create it. I found the shared folders, but they are empty, probably because I can't figure out how to transfer anything from PC to phone or the other way

TIA for any tips - Obviously, I'm overlooking something simple, as usual!

I have a different Android phone than your's .
With that said when your phone is paired with the computer you can transfer file's between each other but to look threw all the folders and stuff on the phone with your computer you will need some software on the phone , with that said I use a program called Webkey for Android it works with the browser on your computer but I think you have to have your phone rooted to use it, there are other app's on the Google play store that do the same thing

Oh to transfer file's with no app . On your computer right click on a file that you want on the phone and pick "send to" and one of the options will be "send to bluetooth" (or something looking similar to that) and on your phone long press on the file you want send to the computer and something similar will come up . It's been a while since I have had to do that I can't think of the name right now. As long as you are paired this should work
