Windows 8.1 Airplane Mode Loop: Randomly cycles on and off

Q: Windows 8.1 Airplane Mode Loop: Randomly cycles on and off

Hello,

I have a newer laptop (HP Pavilion Touchsmart 14) that is running Windows 8.1. I probably should have searched this problem from day one but the issue is so random that I can go 2 months without much of a problem and then I can spend two weeks encountering the problem with every login. When I connect the computer to wifi, whether it be my home wifi, a hotel wifi or an airport wifi, it will sometimes randomly start to cycle in and out of airplane mode for no apparent reason. I can open the settings or wifi icon from the tray (pretty much anywhere I can access the airplane mode toggle) and try to toggle the thing manually but it ignores my mouse clicks and continues to cycle on and off. The same is true if I use the wifi button on the keyboard.

I have tried resetting the wifi card and also disabling firewall but any correlation to the problem seems random. I have also checked that the hardware drivers are up to date. I cannot seem to find any real cause or solution (I have googled the problem extensively and all that comes up are ways to reset the card or different methods for turning airplane mode on and off, none of which helps).

For me the ideal solution is a way to permanently disable airplane mode on my computer. I don't need it and don't want it anyway and would LOVE to rip that mode out of this computer completely.

Has anyone encountered this issue and is there a fix or a way to delete airplane mode from my system?

Thank you,

Brian

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I'll be playing on the computer, doing whatever, and airplane mode will just turn on, then turn off. It's been happening for quite a while, but only recently has it become a huge issue.
I have an MSI GE62 and Windows 10. As far as I can tell, nothing gets pressed to turn it on and off. I've tried turning off power saving modes and I've looked up a lot of different answers but all they do is tell me how to turn airplane mode off. This is very annoying when I'm playing online games or watching streams.
Please let me know if there is a way to make this stop happening or, better yet, get rid of airplane mode all together- I'm never going to need it. Thank you

Sorry for the question. I removed the USB wireless and the wired connection functions properly now. I had tried warm and cold rebooting to no avail. For all I know, airplane mode may have been on all the time and my internet access crapped out for some unknown reason. I put the blame on airplane mode which is sort of a silly reason.

The first wk of Dec. my windows 10 version 1607 crashed and I finally took it to a computer shop. He finally told me that he couldn't get it back into windows 10 and suggested I re-install windows 7. After I brought it home I was busy with shopping and the holidays etc. Today I connected it and turned it on and it came up into windows 10 , but it is stuck in airplane mode. I have been into settings numerous times and there is no place to turn off airplane mode or turn on WI FI. Where should I go from here? I can't do much without getting online at this point. Thanks for any help in advance!!

Hi everyone. I recently installed Windows 7 64-bit on a new V310-15ISK which came with FreeDOS. I got all the drivers installed ok, everything seems to be working fine, except for a couple of quirks: 1. Airplane mode hotkey (F7) is not turning the wireless adapter on/off as it should. Instead I get a blank wireless status window which tells me to turn my wireless adapter on first (which it already is).2. Somewhere in Lenovo Energy Management it says it can't give further info about the battery because it's not an original Lenovo battery  (which is a lie). I had to try a few ACPI drivers for the hotkeys to work as there was none on the product support page. I settled on 4eem02ww.exe which is the most recent functional version I found on the web. Can anyone point me to a proper ACPI driver that lets Airplane mode enable/disable the wireless adapter (and displays all battery info)? Cheers.

Hello, Suddenly today, my WiFi connection won't work. The computer is in Airplane mode and won't turn off. I tried: -- Lenovo updates, which included flashing the BIOS to the latest verison-- Reinstalling the wireless drivers-- I installed some other updates, like ThinkPad settings dependency.  This is a machine that had Windows 7 initially, now upgraded to Windows 10. The WiFi adapter was often needing to be reset prior to this happening. Is this a software thing or could it be a hardware failure? It works perfectly fine when connected with a cable.  Help.

Probably, disabling airplane power mode might help, at least as a workaround. Do it by applying the registry key, then reboot laptop:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Lenovo\PWRMGRV\ConfKeys\Data\AirplaneMode]

A lot of people seem to be having trouble with the Wi-Fi button and with the airplane mode icon displaying when it shouldn't in Windows 10. Is there some kind of explanation or fix? I did a clean install of Windows 10, and the HP Wi-Fi button driver was installed automatically by the Windows installer, or at least I'm pretty sure it was. I seem to recall seeing it listed in Device Manager or someplace. Anyway, the button was working fine, but today I tried to switch my Wi-Fi off using the F12 button, and it didn't work. I clicked on the Wi-Fi icon in the task bar and switched to airplane mode that way. That worked, and the light on the Wi-Fi button changed from white to orange. I still couldn't use the F12 button to turn airplane mode off. I turned airplane mode off manually and reconnected to my Wi-Fi, but the airplane mode icon continued to show on the task bar, even though I was connected to the Internet, able to browse web pages, etc. I rebooted, and still the same problem. In network settings I went in and turned airplane mode off there (even though I was already connected), but the Wi-Fi button is still not working. Is this all a Windows 10 bug, or is there a fix? I noticed similar behavior on a friend's newer HP laptop (a Notebook 15 model) that came with Windows 10 installed--i.e., the airplane mode icon displaying despite the system having an active Wi-Fi connection. Thanks in advance for any advice or explanation.

I am using an HP laptop with Windows 8.

My problem: I am looking for a way to disable the wifi (airplane mode) button. I am NOT looking for a way to disable wifi or airplane mode, but the actual button that controls airplane mode.

Why?: I never use the airplane mode button (because it is useless), and because Windows thinks its funny to make me go to Charms/Settings/Change PC Settings in order to simply re-enable my wifi after accidentally hitting the airplane mode button (why do they? Who knows.). The reason I keep accidentally hitting the airplane mode button is because I use a mousepad on top of my keyboard while playing games (which frequently hits the airplane mode button). If I cannot find out how to disable the button, then I will simply rip the physical key out of my keyboard (since Windows can't find a better way to solve MINOR issues like these) as a means to stop accidentally hitting the key.

How can I simply disable the button's use?

Thank you,

-Miles

A:How to disable airplane mode *button* in Windows 8?

The only Airplane buttons in Windows 8 that I have found are the one in Settings and the one you get to via the Network icon in the Notification Area. Are you talking about the latter one? Theoretically that is a toggle that will then turn Airplane Mode back off (i.e., turn the Wi-Fi back on).

On my Lenovo I can also toggle it via the Fn + F5 key combination, but of course that is not part of Windows.

Wifi only connecting through airplane mode, windows 10 After working normally for months, suddenly my Thinkpad X1 Yoga?s wifi stopped seeing my local router or 6 other connections. Normal troubleshooting, rebooting router etc, didn?t work. Device manager showed latest driver and Intel dual band ac 8265 driver 20.50.1.1 working properly, uninstalled anyway and reinstall, no change. I read about people having conficts with airplane mode. I turned on airplane mode and opened up wifi within that mode. Both WF and AP boxes lit up and wifi connected to my normal home router. If I turn off AP box the Wifi shuts down with no connections, turn on again and still no connections. If I turn off the Wifi box, wifi shuts down. I then have to turn AP back on, then go through network and connections to turn on wifi again, and it connects to my local router. This suggests a software problem? Any suggestions? Microsoft, I see, has been asked about this problem repeatedly in 2011 all the way up to last month, and doesn?t seem to have any real solutions past rebooting and reinstalling driver, which do not work.

How to Turn on/off Airplane mode in Windows 10
Review this document.
Use hardware switchMany devices have a hardware switch to turn on or off the Airplane mode. You can use that button or switch to turn off all the wireless signals from your device. However, Microsoft says that using a hardware switch may not necessarily disable all the wireless communications. Some Windows Store apps have the ability to bypass the hardware switch to connect to GPS or cellular data. The best method, according to Microsoft, is to use the Airplane mode button available via Notifications in System Tray.Use Notifications shortcutTo toggle the state of Airplane mode in Windows 10, click on Notifications icon. Scroll down to see the options. Click on the button saying Airplane mode to turn it on or off.
Use Windows 10 SettingsYou can also use Settings to turn the airplane mode off or on in Windows 10. Follow these steps:* Open Start Menu* Click on Settings* Click on Network and InternetChange Airplane mode to OffChange Wireless devices to OnIf Windows 10 is stuck in Airplane mode, here are few things you may want to try. Before you begin, make sure that if your device has a physical Wi-Fi On/Off button or switch, it is set to the On position.* Try pressing the Fn+Radio Tower key. On my Dell,... Read more

Hello,

Before I start my Thread i apologize for me English, It is just from google translate.

My girlfriend's laptop had been a BSOD. This includes the kernel power Event ID 41. This issue seems to be the WiFi driver. Now I want to update it, but that is not the current problem. If I take the laptop out of airplane mode, the screen flickers blue and I can do nothing. If the laptop on airplane mode, nothing happens and operates the laptop normally.
How can I solve this problem? If Annex I added the ZIP file of the dm_log_collector. I hope to have sufficiently informed you with this.

I'm new to this forum so be nice.

I have a ASUS A7N8X board with a Allied AL-A400ATX power supply. Starting this weekend, with no notice, my system will not boot up. Instead, it seems to be stuck in a On/Off loop. I can't get into bios, safe mode or use my bootup floppy because the cycle doesn't last long enough to reach that part of the startup routine. The front On/Off switch does not work. I have to power down by using the main power switch on the Power Supply. I think I've narrowed it down to my power supply or my motherboard. I tried a new hard drive . . . no change. After disconnecting all my various drives including hard drive(2), CD, DVD, and Floppy; I am still getting the On/Off loop. The power supply seems to be automatically turning itself on/off. Even when I disconnected the On/Off switch cable from the motherboard it continues. I looked at the capacitors on my motherboard and there appears to be no sign of bulging or discharge. Do you think I should try to replace my power supply? or motherboard? or something else? I'm getting in a little over my head, but don't think I'm ready to buy a whole new system. Please advise.

A:System will not power up. Endless loop of On/Off cycles every 2/3 seconds.

I would definitely try a new psu first.

First off let me say my first thought was to google the problem, and I've found a lot of similar situations, but none of the fixes have worked so far.

I have a desktop running Windows 8.1 which was self-built about 2 years ago.  It has an intel CPU and an MSI mobo (I have more details somewhere if they're important).  The only issue it had was it would occasionally not wake up from sleep mode if you left it for a while.  My girlfriend was using it and got this issue, and forced a power button reset.  While I would like to be able to blame this all on that I have also done the same thing in the past.  She said it said "automatic recovery of disc, could take 1 hour", followed by the "repair loop" that i keep getting:

diagnosing PC ---> Attempting repairs ---> Automatic repair couldn't repair your PC
Log file: D:\WINDOWS\System32\Logfiles\Srt\Srttrail.txt

All the advanced options are dead ends.  For a while I couldn't even get it to boot from CD, but I went into BIOS and changed the boot order.  When I boot from Windows CD the problem is essentially the same.  I've specifically tried automatic repair several times because I read that sometimes it takes 3 times, but no luck there.  I've also unplugged all peripherals, same issue.

One weird thing is when I go into the command prompt (from advanced options) all of my directories are missing.  The same is true when I open notepad from command and bro... Read more

A couple of things you could try.

1. Turn off computer, unplug it, hold power button for 30 to 45 seconds plug it back in and retsrt and try again.
2. Find the CMOS jumper. (It'll be a small rectangular piece with three prongs and a small plastic thing covering two of them) Remove the plastic piece and place of the other two prongs and wait about 30 seconds and replace it to it's original location. If this doesn't help we can try something else.

Hi guys, first post I was hoping you could help me out.

What I have going on is this:

I'll leave my PC on for a few hours and all of a sudden my PC will lock up. The screen's will go black and my mouse and keyboard will stop working. Heres a key, I have a USB mouse and the lights will go off on the mouse.

I have hibernation turned off
I have screen saver turned off

All power seems to stay on the machine but nothing is working and i have to power cycle for it to come back. Now I noticed this happening as soon as the air conditioning came on in the house. So i went and bought a UPS, but that has not fixed the issue. I've monitored my CPU and it's far from over heating. I have the log constantly written out to see that. I was using Core Temp for that.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

My event viewer is empty, so i'm not sure at this point...

My daughter has a Dell laptop with Win 8.1 this has been broken many times and she's returned it (she bought a 2 year warranty which is good) it's needed the harddrive replaced at least twice. That's not the problem, but the last 2 times it came back from being fixed, it's been in AIRPLANE MODE. this happened the last time it came back from getting fixed, and I googled it and she tried various things, even taking the battery out and waiting and putting it back in. It won't connect to WiFi and says it's in Airplane mode. The last time she kept trying to use it and a few days later it started working okay. Most Dell laptops have a physical switch which turns the WiFi adapter On or Off. When the switch is off and there is no wired connection to the Internet, the laptop shows to be in Airplane mode. If the switch if On and the laptop is still in Airplane mode, the WiFi adapter could be disabled. From Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections look at the status of the WiFi adapter; if it shows as 'Disabled', just right click on it and select 'Enable'.

Thanks for helping! Wondering if this is a common issue. Brand new out of the box 730 that has been plugged in ONCE. Just set it up today and was working through the setup just to customize stuff and got to looking around on Vantage and took a look at the battery health report. Report reads 255 under cycle counts.  Is this a known issue? I havent even used this machine through one full cycle but I bought this 730 based on a decent experience with a 710. Now I've been using the 730 on a fairly modest power plan and Im already down 10 % so I am almost inclined to believe it(funky battery) even though this unit came out of the box today. If it is a real count, I am to understand I can expect 1000ish cycles out of li ion batterys so Im already a quarter of the way there!

Every time I look at the notifications panel on my laptop, Airplane Mode is turned on. I know what it does, but do I need it if I never travel with the laptop? Only use laptop with AC plugged in, so saving battery is not a priority. How do I disable permanently?

The Fn+F7 combo keys (airplane mode ON/OFF) in my Flex 5-1570 (80XB000US) are not working but I can do the same from the Notification are. After 3 chats today with Lenovo support they suggest to send my laptop for service which is free since the laptop is about 6 months old. I don?t want to send the laptop away for such a minor problem (Inconvenient yes). Looking on this forum for solutions I see suggestions to replace the keyboard driver with one made by Lenovo but the Lenovo site has no such driver for me, they only have Intel or Atheros drivers (I have Intel installed) Does anyone here had a similar problem and found a solution? Any suggestion? Thanks

Hello
Here's my problem. My desktop computer was working fine. I used it in the morning than shut it down. A couple of hours later, it was impossible to connect to the internet. My router is working because all my Ipad and other devices can connect to the Wi-Fi network. The computer seems to be stuck in "Airplane mode" because i see the "Airplane mode" icon next to my internet acces icon. I can't find any way to shut off this airplane mode!

A:Stuck in Airplane mode

Please post make and full model of desktop
OS - May I presume it is 10
Airplane mode will show for a number of reasons besides you actually switching it on
Go network and sharing centre
change adapter settings on left pane
What is shown please for wireless adapter and is it an installed card or a usb external wireless adapter

Hello,I have Pavilion 17-g172nw (N8J73EA), originally with Win10, but changed hard drive to SSD and installed Win7 x64 (necessary for work). Installing drivers wasn?t easy but managed to find and installed all up to date. No unknown devices left. But after turning on my notebook is in airplane mode and ?Wireless capability is turned off?. To connect with wifi I need to wait a while than push (3 times) airplane button (F12) than wait for a connection. It?s annoying. Also it turns Bluetooth on. Since win7 doesn?t have airplane mode I can?t set any options. I turned all found power management options to full power. But didn?t find ?Panel Open-Power On? option. In BIOS there are no options for airplane mode.Is there a solution to turn airplane mode off as a default? Or other solution to this problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I had an issue with AVG that was locking up the machine.   I was able to remove AVG in safemode, but after rebooting my laptop, I now have no internet connectivity.  I am running Windows 10.  When I go into the settings for network and internet, I have an option for Dial-up, VPN, airplane mode.   There is no option for Ethernet nor wifi.  When I click on airplane mode and attempt to set the toggle switch to off, it will not move...it simply slides back to the on position.   I've gone into device manager and attempted to update the driver (which is Qualcomm Atheros AR9485 802.11 bgn wifi adapter) and it tells me that it's up to date.  I then disabled it per instructions that I found online, and rebooted.  It reinstalled the drivers, and again says that the drivers are up to date.  Another option was for me to go to properties for the adapter and hit the power managment and Clear off the option that says Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.  However, there is no power managment tab?!?!?! Also, when I view the Network Connections folder, it is empty.  I'm at a loss.  I've tried everything that I can think of.  My wife needs this PC with internet access to run her online business, but it's utterly useless at this point. I could really use some assistance. Thanks!

I have a user with a Dell Latitude E7270, and she claims that it loses all connectivity once a week or so. Some of those times, Airplane Mode is enabled (easy fix), and other times, it is not. When it is not, we have to remove the Intel wireless card, reboot, let it be redetected, and then she is fine.

I've checked her OS using dism, and tried several revisions of the wifi card drivers, right from Intel. Has anyone experienced Airplane Mode enabling itself without user interaction?

Is there a way to keep Bluetooth on in the airplane mode? My application is on a cruise ship where I would like to easily turn WiFi off using the convenient airplane mode selection and leave Bluetooth on for my mouse on my Venue 10 tablet.

A:Airplane mode with Bluetooth ON?

Hello Calbear,

Yes. When airplane mode is turned on, you'll still be able to turn on or off your individual Bluetooth and wireless devices.
