I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.
I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)
I get the error message that "cannot write to the reports file" when I change any settings in McAfee 4.5.1....what's the problem???
New dv6-7000 laptop (Win7 64-bit) has a problem I can't seem to solve: When using any SDHC memory card you cannot write or erase files to the card. You can read the files just fine, but you get a "Write Protected" error when trying to write or erase. The card is, of course, not write protected, and can be written to in several other laptop/desktop SD drives that I've tried. And I've tried different brands/sizes of SDHC cards. Smaller capacity regular SD cards work just fine. I tried removing this device and rebooting to reinstall the hardware, but no help. The Realtek SD Driver shows as version 6.1.7600.16385 in Device Manager properties, dated 6/20/06. HP's support site shows a newer driver version 6.1.7601.29005 dated 2/24/12. When I download and run sp56166.exe to update the driver, it seems to go through the update process successfully. But the driver still shows as the older version in Device Manager. And, of course, the problem still exists. Any ideas would be much appreciated! Hard to believe that a new dv6 laptop can't properly write or erase files from High Capacity SDHC memory cards. Thank you!
I understand high capacity SD cards return the message they are write protected in your system.
I take it the write protect switch is in the off/disable position on the card since they work in other systems.
What is the product number?
NOTE: Do NOT provide the serial number.
What brand and model is the SDHC card?
My McAfee virusscan detected the [email protected] virus. I'm unable to do anything with it (delete, clean, quarantine). I get disk is write-protected error. I try to browse to the directory it's in and I can't see it. I've changed folder settings to show hidden and system files. I'm running XP and still can't see the folder it shows up in. I've run viruscan in normal and safe mode. Still can't do anything with it. I've included my Hijackthis log.
You are using an old version of Hijack This. You are also running HJT from your Temporary Internet Files folder. It will not function properly from there and it cannot create and restore backups from there. You need to create a new folder in My Documents and name it Hijack This. Now Click here to download Hijack This again. Download it and click "Save". Save it to the Hijack This folder you just created. That way it can create and restore backups if needed. HJT will store the backups in the same location that it is run from.
Click on Hijackthis.exe to launch the program. Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log. Click "Save" to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" then Paste the log back here in a reply.
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
You'll have to provide more information than that for anyone to be able to help you.

insert it, and right click the Properties of the optical drive, and see if it is write protected.
I have a Samsung SPH-a920 cell phone. I am trying to load songs, and some are loading and can be played and some can not, I get the write protected message. I have a Sandisk card with the phone. Hi, I have a 1TB External HArd Drive and some times I try to add data to it and I received the message Windows cannot ..................... because the drive is write protected. I turn off the HDD and turn it on again and work fine, the same thing happens withe every flash card I put in the card reader (SD, XD, Micro). Sorry for any bad english
Have been using a San Disk Glide 8G flash drive. For no reason(known by me) I cannot format this drive. It informs me it is write protected. Any help would be appreciated.
I tried to save some photos onto new CDs and DVDs both RW from folder in My Documents and sending to C drive.
I get the message that these are write protected. Meaning the formatting is missing? No message to say so.
Can anyone resolve this please?
What is the exact message you are getting. It may refer to the images you are trying to burn to disk. In which case right click on the image file and select properties and see what is checked there.
Also if you are using rw cds you may need to format them first. Your authoring software should have an option to do this.
Hi i have a hd which wont alow me to change write protection evan in dos i tryed but it sead drive now readable but when i try to format it in windows disk manager it says disk is write protected can anyone help me thanks
Hello rscadden!
This is unpleasant. I hope the following would help you.
1. Type cmd in the Start Menu
2. Select Run as Administrator
3. You should now see the Command Line Utility
4. Type in DISKPART and hit Enter ( here the values associated with your USB drive could be changed)
5. Type LIST DISK and hit Enter
6. Type SELECT DISK and the number of your drive which is write protected and hit Enter
7. Type in ATTRIBUTES DISK and Diskpart gives the information you need about your drive
If the first line is written as Current Read-only State: Yes, then the drive is write protected.
8. To remove the write protection with Diskpart, type the command ATTRIBUTES DISK CLEAR READONLY. If it works, it should be confirmed by the line Disk attributes cleared successfully.
Good luck!

I am trying to transfer my tracks from my music folder to mp3 player, but comes up cannot copy track as destination is write protected turn off write protected or use another disc. what do I do
Most Mp3 players have a 'lock' or 'hold' switch on the body somewhere to protect it's contents. If this is on then that can stop you adding to the player further.
Hello,
A while back I changed the properties of all my picturess to READ ONLY. Then my computer crashed and someone else reinstalled my windows XP. When windows was reinstalled, the compuer was given a new name and my user name changed as well. Now I cannot access the pictures at all. I tried changing the pictures' properties, but I get an acess denied message. Any suggestions?
I think you probably just need to take back ownership of the folder/files. Microsoft has an article on how to do that at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308421.

Hi, I'm new to the Windows Vista world. My old computer (XP) crashed and Vista is what was available.
I can't seem to restore any of my data for my accounting programs with Vista. Usually the error message is that the disk is write protected!! My hard drive?? I am trying to restore data from a CD to my C drive. Another message I receive is that the disk is full. I still have 74Gs of memory left. Is this Vista or McAfee? Any help would be appreciated.
Joyce
How are you attempting to restore the data? What accounting program are you using (and is it Vista compatible?)?

Read other answersHi, I have a problem with a brand new USB stick, PNY 64GB I bought on e-bay about two months ago. It started working properly, I transferred on it about 20GB of my photos. I did not notice anything weird. The pictures were there and I think I could even move them on and off, like copying and deleting. After few days, when I wanted to erase them, there was a message that the device is write protected. USB? There is nothing to switch it for write protection like on SD cards, for example.
From that moment, the device once was recognized as inserted in the PC, other times it was not. I could not delete the images, I could not format the device and even the KillDisc software, after running nearly 5 days without a break could not sort this out. There was an error message at 99% of process and I could do nothing else than to skip it, which resulted in the problem persisting on the USB.
Now I cannot even view the files, despite after this treatment I could have seen them few days ago. The files, after I clicked on them, showed mostly unaffected photos in the views, but when I wanted to see any particular photo, all of them appeared to be damaged - there was a grey area on the majority of the photo, just a thin area of the original picture could be seen on the top of the picture.
I have contacted the seller with this problem and they offered me the refund or replace, even assured me that the item will go to the manufacturer.
However, I guess that there are phishers outside j... Read more
Hi,
If I understand you, you wish to remove all the photo's/data on this stick prior to returning it to the seller. Is that correct?

to a CD-R disk
What is the CD burning software you are using? CD-R discs are Write once media by default. Unless the first time you burned it you chose to make a multi-session disc in the burning software program. CD-RW discs can be written to more then once as long as you do not Finalize the CD.
Instead of using a CD-R you should use a USB Flash drive, or better yet a USB HDD.

So, I had a virus, it was the Windows XP Recovery fake program one, and it had made it so all of my stuff was hidden. Everything on the C:\ drive was "gone", but was actually still there. I have an external drive for all my media. It was plugged in when I got infected. I have a paranoia with infecting the external drive, so I always unplug it immediately when I see problems. Anyway, I cleaned out most, if not all, of the virus. 90% of my stuff was back to normal. So I plugged in my external, USB, Seagate 1TB GoFlex Desktop HDD. I can see almost everything in the root of the drive fine. Keyword: almost. I could tell something was wrong because my dropbox folder is in the root of my external, and the green/blue badge wasn't there.
So, I went into the folder and there was nothing there. I check the rest of the drive, and everything is hidden. I enable show hidden folders and I can see everything now, and I right click on a hidden folder, properties, and uncheck the Make Hidden box. Hit apply.
"An error occured applying attributes to the file: The media is write protected." Now, I've tried all that I can think of. I tried looking in the drive properties for a "read only" box to uncheck, I tried a cmd command for making all files not hidden, and it doesn't work. There is no physical switch for write protection. What else can I do to make it so I can write to these files/this drive? I need this drive guys...
Thanks for the help

Is this on a CD that you have already burned something on and you want to add to it?
Depending on how and what program you used to burn the CD, you probably finalized the disk, which in other terms means it is write protected and cannot be altered
Hello,
I am trying to point Musicmatch to e:\My Documents\My Music folder for ripping CD's. When I try to select it, MM says that the folder is write protected. I am able to select folders on the c: partition but tnot the e: partition. I've checked all the file properties and they appear identical in every way. Also checked my user priveledges which are the same as the administrator. I've had this problem before with MM on another PC...I'm wondering if it can't select anything other than a c: drive?
Ok, suddenly it is working. Don't ask me why/how. I'd delete the post if I could, but the system won't let me.

Recieved from my father-in-law, he says it doesn't work. So I take it and there is no power at all. I take it apart and replace the USB connector and I receive power. However, trying to initialize the disk in computer management windows 7 says "the media is write protected". Computer management labels it as a "CD-ROM", now I don't know if this might be an issue, or it just does that until the disk is initialized. I tried diskpart and modifying 'writeprotect' in the registry but neither worked.
I also loaded up Win XP x64 to try it there, but I received pretty much the same results.
Thanks
Caspersim
Under Windows 7, launch the registry editor (press Windows Logo + R, type regedit, then press Enter). Navigate then to this registry path:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > System > CurrentControlSet > Control > StorageDevicePoliciesRight click on writeprotect and select modify. Set the value data to 0, then click OK. Do the same with ControlSet001 and ControlSet002. Close the registry editor and restart your system. Try then to access your external storage device.

G'day jozzyjay, and Welcome to BC !!
How to remove a write protection from your USB memory Stick
1. Shutdown your computer or laptop
2. Insert USB Memory Stick into your laptop or Computer
3. Turn on laptop and then immediately start pressing (F8) key then Advanced Boot Options screen will come up
4. Select Safe Mode with Command Prompt
5. After loading files if your USB Memory Stick drive letter is (G) for example then write as
6. C:\windows\system32>G: and press enter
7. G:\>format G: and press enter
8. If ask you (Y/N) then press (Y) and press enter
9. Now a full format will start which remove write protection from USB Memory Stick.
Note:
Before removing USB from your computer, Always remove it safely by going into to my computer then right click on USB and click eject.
Suddenly, when uploading my pictures to my pc I cannot edit or delete them because a) they are Read only and b) they are write protected.
What I've tried is to uncheck the Read only box. A message comes up to say the folder is write protected and I should remove it. Then I get the option to ignore all which I click on but it doesn't have any effect.
I've also tried moving the slider up and down on the memory card but that doesn't change anything either.
My other camera doesn't have this problem nor did the Lumix until now so can someone tell me how to remove the Write protection? I don't want to have to format the card and lose my photos, even if that would work.

Hi All
I have a problem with an 1G XD card that was being used to upload photos to a website on a public PC.
For some reason the card is now write protected and cannot shoot any photos or delete.
Has anyone come across this problem or has the card gone bad
For starters make sure your write protection switch is not set on lock. It is on the left side of the card.
If your card doesn’t have a write protection switch or it is unlocked, right click on one of your images in Windows Explorer or My Computer. Select properties and make sure “Read only” hasn’t somehow been checked. If it has clear the box and Select all. Right click on one of the highlighted images and check “Archive”. When you Apply and OK you should have all of the images back to archive.

Try this.
Download Windows Executable (works without installation): HDD Low Level Format Tool ver.4.25
HDDGURU: HDD LLF Low Level Format Tool
Plugin your pendrive, run the executable and low level format it. It fills all the sectors with zero and reinitialises it to the factory condition.
Once the lowlevel format is successfully completed, do a regular format.
I recommend HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool. (Run it as administrator)
Download HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool 2.2.3 Free - Windows-based Format Utility for HP Drive Key or DiskOnKey USB Device - Softpedia

My SD card was borrowed to take some photos. Because it already had photos on, the user copied them to a pc, then deleted them from the card. Before returning the card, the photos were put back on. I think this may have messed the card up for use in my camera. No matter what I do, I get a message that the card is 'write protected', even though the lock is off. I can view/copy the files that are on the card, so there's no problem about losing photos, but the card no longer works in my camera, and it's a 32gb, which I use (or used to) regularly for videos of bands. My question really is, is the card now scrap? Or can I get it up and running again? It's recognized straight away when I put in the pc.
it has possibly been formatted for a different format than your camera recognises
computers will recognise different formats
see if you can format the card in a computer to fat not fat 32 and then put in camera and format again in the camera
make sure you have copied off any pictures you want to keep first
