Bad display quality on externel screen / Thinkpad Yoga S1

Q: Bad display quality on externel screen / Thinkpad Yoga S1

Dear community,

maybe you can help. I just made aquisition of a thinkpad yoga S1 (DXdiag here attached) DxDiag TP-Yoga S1.txt

I am very happy with it, except when I want to use an external display with the mini-HDMI-VGA dongle delivered by Lenovo:

The extended desktop on this external display is quite bad quality. This is happening on different external monitors which are very good when attached to my other computer.

What problem can it be? Graphic card? Dongle? driver?

Thank you in advance for any advice.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Bad display quality on externel screen / Thinkpad Yoga S1

I'd say the dongle is where you want to start. Have Lenovo send you a new one. You've already demonstrated that it's not the monitor, so that leaves items supplied by Lenovo and you'll have a significantly easier time getting them to agree to send you a dongle that probably costs them very little to produce compared to anything else. Plus it's easier for you to test and the most likely scenario to fix your issue. If there were something wrong with the GPU on the unit, you'd expect it to affect the internal display as well as external and do so equally/uniformly. The driver idea is possible, but highly unlikely, but if there's an updated driver and you want to install it while waiting for a new dongle to show up, knock yourself out.

Hi, I 'm having problem with my new laptop screen display. (Thinkpad X1 Yoga 2nd  signature edition)I have noticed that there is like 2 different color areas. It's really visible when i'm displaying a white page. There is an 'external frame', 2cm  width from the screen edge, all around. In the external rectangular form, the white color seems yellow.  At contrary the center one has perfect white. As you can see here : Note: The problem is permanent. It also appears in the bios and in the display checking control. My laptop costed me almost $3k, I'm really disappointed. Is anyone experiencing the same problem ?

Got new X1 Yoga 2nd Gen OLED, having problems with the display settings.  The screen colors are incredibly rich and the colors are borderline neon and strain the eyes after more than 15 minutes of use.  I finally found a way to reduce the neon glow by going to the Intel Graphic Settings and adjusting the color gamut option slider from vibrant to one step down toward natural colors.  The problem, is that after a the computer is put to sleep or restarted, it goes back to the neon colors.  Is there a way to get these settings to stay without having to change it every time I open up the computer?  The display is amazing for viewing movies with super vibrant sharp colors, but when it's in vibrant factory settings its very bad.  The colors on webpages and onscreen keep increasing and decreasing in brightness randomly.

Hi, Since I brought the laptop I have always had an issue with fixing the screen brightness. The meter would change on pressing the buttens but not screen brightness. Now, (may be after some automatic updates) my screen is completely off - I get a full black screen. I am able to access my laptop screen by connecting an external monitor and duplicating my screen. I have tried to reset the computer using recovery options but even that doesn't work. What should I do? Thank you,

I just bought this laptop and I must say it is really not what i expected..So many faulty small issues. For instance, microsoft powerpoint and word does not always work when using in tablet mode, but switching it back to laptop mode and then back to tablet mode it works again.. I just wanted to close a ppt file but this machine couldn't even do that. Will never ever ever ever buy a lenovo again. absolute **bleep** company with an absolute rubbish website. I even had to google how i could post a message or just ask a question..  for anyone looking at this particular model, don't buy it. The screen flickers, settings are not saved that are supposed to be saved. things like ticking the 'show pen battery' on, doesn't even work all the time.. Who even designed and made these **bleep** laptops.. I thought thinkpads would be great but they are absolutely not worth your money

A:DO NOT BUY the Thinkpad L380 yoga (especially if you expect quality)

Yes, it's a terrible buy. There are many other problems with the model besides the flickering of the screen, the pen problem, the battery problem, the trackpoint problem, some have connection issues in certain circumstances, bleeding of white from the edges of the screen, and the list goes on. You can definitely not associate this with quality. The keyboard is nice though. Rest is a pos.

I posted a similar question earlier and people referred me to the Yoga (much appreciated).  However, I was interested in the 2.6 lb carbon version with touch screen capabilities.  Asus has a Spin 7 model that is very good at 2.65lb, but I miss the red mouse toggle in the middle of the keyboard and Asus's track pad was designed too large....causing unintended tapping.  The Yoga, while nice, is heavier than I was looking for.  The 14 inch screen is about 3.3lb? the 12 inch at 3? I thought that some of the earlier Thinkpad Carbons had touch screen and was hoping they would make a return soon.  Thanks,

I reset my pc - windows 10 to fix a different issue and on reboot, i see lenovo splash screen, but windows is only visible on external monitor.  I found a batch file fix, but that appears to be related to OLED screens - i don't think i have one.  My problem to start with was minor - every time i unpin Edge and Store, they return... tried registry and appdata location deletes - no success. I know it is a profile issue, tried deleting profile, but work has us login to Azure AD, and that screwed that up - had to reset to start  the process over. Ever since - the laptop screen only shows the lenovo boot splash.

Hi everyone,

I bought in January a new Thinkpad Yoga 260 and am very happy with it. But in the last weeks i recognized some yellow stains or clouds on my display. I checked it also in the Bios and on a other Os and they are still recognizable. They are only visible on a horizontal line and they aren?t fix, because someday they are more intense on the left side and on another day more on the right side.
The strange thing is also that when I clean my display, they fade away and after some time they come back.

Therefore I would like to ask here what the issue could be.
Thanks and Greetings,
albflo

I am looking at getting 2 machines, one for a family member who wants to edit with Photoshop and Clip Studio Paint, and one general-purpose one for myself. The FHD 1920x1080 anti-glare screen on the 460 has been criticized for less-than-wide gamut support and bland colours.  I notice that it can now be configured with the WQHD 2560x1440 glare IPS.  What is the colour gamut % of this WQHD option? Would this be the same screen or have similar characteristics as the WQHD panel in the Thinkpad P40? Does anyone have feedback on how the glare and additional resolution impact everyday usability?Or should I just go with the X1 Yoga and it's FHD/WQHD anti-glare options?

Uninstall and update the drive from Lenovo Support Site3. Set TdrDelay to value 8 / 10  However, all methods failed.  Plus, a message " Application has been blocked from accessing Graphics hardware" sometimes, and my application froze for 11-2 seconds.  Could you please suggest a method to solve this critical issue?  My  GPU is Intel HD Graphics 520, and current driver version is 20.19.15.4404

Hello, i have some issues with the display of my Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga 260. It shows some yellow spots on the display, especially in the lower corners. I have already contacted the Lenovo Support Team concerning warranty. But Lenovo claims, that my Laptop is no longer covered by the warranty, because i have removed the lamination sheet of the display and replaced it by another one. So now i want to exchange the display on my own. Is it possible to order a display without any further services, so that i can do the exchange of my display by my self? I havenīt found any website (including Lenovo) that offers the display seperately without any installation service. So i just want to have the spare part. I got the following Model:Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga 260 with a Full HD DisplayType: 20FES00000 I would be grateful for any help.

I'm truly at my ends dealing with this issue, and searching without luck for a fix. As stated above, I've got a 2015 era Lenovo Yoga 12 (S2?) 20DK that has been used on and off over the last 18 months. About 6 months ago it started; while flipping the screen from laptop mode to tablet mode, the screen will flicker a few times and after completing the transition to tablet the screen is off. Won't power up, nothing. Now during the act of flipping to tablet mode I can stop at certain points before folding it totally flat into tablet mode, and it will work fine (keyboard/mouse disabled, screen rotation works). There seems to be a sweet spot at about a 45 degree angle in tablet mode that it works fine. Even like that, if I even bump it a little more towards full on flipped back tablet mode, it'll shutdown. I've just been ignoring the problem for the most part but for a new job I started I need it to go into full tablet mode. Everything works fine in traditional Laptop Mode. I've tried updating the Driver, BIOS, and Windows.I've disabled the Sensor Data Service and Sensor Monitoring ServiceTried using a strong magnet on different points around bottom of bezel to "fool" any sensors Nothing is working. My Thinkpad Yoga 15 has a problem, which may or may not be related to the BIOS update recently performed. When booting, the bootup screen only appears on an external monitor via the HDMI output. When performing the hardware tests in the BIOS, tests are done on the HDMI-connected display, the internal display does not seem to be recognized. I verified this using both Linux and Windows. It does not seem to be a hardware failure; I have been able to get the display on the internal LCD a few times, by powering down the laptop, holding the power button for about 20 seconds, then powering back on while pressing F1. The laptop will then function for a while, but loses its display after coming out of sleep. Needless to say, this is unworkable. Does anyone have any tips on how this could be fixed in a more permanent fashion or any indication to cause? BIOS does not allow me to turn off NVIDIA, or its opposite, to enable it exclusively. I also tried different drivers, from both Lenovo as well as NVIDIA and Intel, but to no avail. Any pointers appreciated.

Signed up for this specific topic; been searching everywhere with nothing panning out.  Conexant SmartAudio HD, Lenovo ThinkPad OneLink Dock, and Intel(R) Display Audio are my sound drivers/controllers.  Conexant is running computer speakers in HD, I have no speakers connected to Onelink, and my real question Intel(R) Display Audio the dedicated HDMI driver is running through Onelink to my LG OLED TV.   Problem is Intel(R) Display Audio doesnt support HD formats I know with certainty my TV does in fact in sound settings it excludes tens if not hundreds of supported formats and is maxed at 2 channels while TV is 4 naitive upscaled to 7.1.  Up until 3 days ago I new nothing of any of this and first suspected the Onelink which it may still be but I'm convinced its the dedicated HDMI driver Intel(R) Display Audio. Is there any driver or software that I can use for HDMI from the Onelink that is passed through a sound driver/controller similar to Intel High Definition Audio driver which would allow me to have HD sound (this search began because of a stutter in sound for .2-2 sec every 5-20 min on HD playback in Kodi (post buffer and nonexistant on playback)).  Thanks

Tried searching this one here, no luck. I recent;ly purchased a Thinkpad Yoga 14 at Best Buy, from which I understand is a T400 so I hope I'm correct in posting in this section. I love the machine, however, after about a week it started developing a discolored region in the lower left corner: orange in color, circular in shape, about one half to three quarters of an inch in diameter. I searched the web and found for other devices, and solutions varying from returns to software based methods (of which I am dubious). Edit: I am noticing a slighter discoloration over a larger area in the lower left corner, barely discernable but it's there, as well as the very noticable circle. Before I return the device, I wanted to post here to get any input. Has anyone else experienced this and their solution?

Dear all, I would like to upgrade the touchscreen on the Thinkpad Yoga 260 - I have the 1366x768 model (a long and annoying story!) and I really want the 1080 screen - for obvious reasons. I am relatively technically competent (I'm a tinkerer) and have carried out these sorts of procedures on other laptops in the past. Which brings me to my question... Having upgraded the screen on a T450 and run into the problem of the display driver not accepting the new screen (some issue relating to EDIDs, or something like that) (https://www.reddit.com/r/thinkpad/comments/3t3z1d/lenovo_t450_lcd_replacement_cant_change_brightness... Am I going to encounter the same problem with the Yoga 260? Or potentially worse given that there are touch-screen issues involved too? Looking around at replacement panel assemblies they instruct not to use if the present resolution is wrong (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/12-5-FHD-LCD-LED-Touch-Screen-Assembly-for-Lenovo-ThinkPad-Yoga-260-1920X1...) - it is just these particular panels, or am I screwed? Any success stories would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Tim

After reading through dreaded black screen issue for other models, I am checking if the Thinkpad Yoga also has the black screen issue. Given that this happened barely inside a month after the warranty expired, this has solid changes to be the last lenovo product in the family. Issue: I returned one home from work to wake up my sleeping Lenovo. Noticed it seemed to be in a dark screen mode with nothing showing up. So tried to press a few buttons and then finally powered off using the button. Upon restart, I could see the Lenovo sign and option to press Enter to check other options and I ignored like usual happy path scenario and let it go. At the time it usually starts showing the Windows screens, I see nothing happen. A dark screen with all the keyboard lights still working but no screen. Connected to projector to see if the login screen shows but it did NOT. I am currently typing this on a bluetooth keyboard attatched to my phone...  Thank God for the keyboard.   Anyway my laptop is obviously down.  It started off where it wouldn't turn on at all.  I simply got 3 lights on the thinkpad when plugging it in, and two lights when trying to get it to turn on.  Then after letting it sit for a while, it would turn on and boot up, only to shut off after 20 seconds or so...  Then it finally booted all the way up, and I was extremely happy...  I even journaled about how happy I was on my journal software on my computer, but after shutting it down all that happens is a solid thinkpad light when I turn it on, and the keyboard flashes like normal then...  no screen comes on.   I thought to myself, at least I have a backup tablet...  I guess I had it sitting in its case too long because it seems that the battery is gone on it and wont even turn on so I am left using my tablets keyboard with my phone to write to you fine people.  Like I said, I am very grateful for this keyboard making my situation much more bearable. Please help.  I am thinking all signs are pointing towards some sort of motherboard failure, but am hoping that there is a wizard in the forums that may be able to wave a magic wand.  I have already pushed the static discharge button around 101 times.

Hi, I just received my Yoga and it looks and feels great. However, there seems to be some sort of foil over the screen, that doesn't quite cover the screen edge to edge. It stops around maybe 0.5mm from the end of the glass panel. It also appears to give the display some sorty of milky grey collor when turned off. I was wondering if this is part of the digitizer, a protective or anti-glare foil, or something else entirely? I first thought it was the kind of screen protector you see on phones when you first buy them, but there's no latch to take it of, and it seems to be glued to the display rather well. Can anyone enlighten me?

A:ThinkPad Yoga screen foil?

it is a layer of pre-applied screen protector. It's for anti-glare and protective purpose. It's possible to remove it but requires patience and effort as its strongly glued to the screen during production. From what I understood any fault related with the removal of the screen protector is not covered by the warranty.

Hi,I have a 2nd generation Thinkpad Yoga 12.5 inch notebook. I have had this computer for about 18 months and the screen is completely ruined in many places. I have the matte screen and it appears that the pen has been scratching the soft matte finnish at many places. There are also big smudges from the keyboard that does not go away when I try to clean the screen. I am happy with this laptop overall, but I think it is terrible design to fail to make sure that the screen and keyboard is not touching when the lid is closed! Is it possible to fix these screen issues? Looking at the corner of the the screen, it looks like there is a screenprotector or similar on the device. Is this how Lenovo makes their matte screens? Just pasting a screen protector on top of a glossy screen? If so, would it be possible for me to remove it without damaging the actual screen and get rid of the scratches and smudges? Cheers Cheers

Hi, I recently purchased X1 yoga 2016. At first, the screen rotation function worked perfectly. Recently, when I rotate my screen and enter tablet mode, the screen won't flip at all. I would like to work in the portrait mode but my screen didn't rotate at all. I make sure that the rotation lock is off. I appreciate all comments on this issue. Thank you so much.

Before I returned the device, I wanted to post here to get any input. Has anyone else experienced this and their solution?

Hi all, Recently bought a Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga 14 (20DM) with Windows 10. But randomly the screen is flickering for a few seconds, then is back to normal. If a connect the HDMI to a TV, the laptop screen is flickering while the TV is working fine. I already updated Windows and all the drivers. Any idea or suggestion? Thanks and regards,Jose

Hallo,Judging by users of Thinkpad P50 and P70 in this forum it seems that screen problems are not that unusual. My own experience is that the screen of my P40 died within a week of the purchasing it. I sent it in for repairs only to receive the message "the repair procedure has stopped due to unavailability of spare parts". That was two weeks ago.Lenovo: if you launch a new model it would be wise to see to it that you have stocked up on spare parts, ESPECIALLY those that are prone to failure, i.e. screens. As of now, I am clueless when I will receive it back, and I desperately need it now (preferably yesterday) for my work. That's why I bought a workstation for PREMIUM MONEY! So, prospective buyers bear this issue in mind if you need a reliable workstation. Aatje

My x1 yoga ThinkPad 2nd gen is having a bad display, split screen type of problem! The left edge of what would normally be the edge of monitor screen is stuck in almost the middle of the screen and the desktop background as well as any windows that are open are split up and continued from the right side of screen over to the left, even the pointer from the mouse is following the same behavior. The proportions aren't even centered exactly at split more like 60/40. It reminds me of one of those old big monitors where you can manually adjust the screen and center the display. Well I can't seem to find the setting to adjust for this anywhere, any help here would be greatly appreciated! Also it's having other display issues as well. The color will be insanely bright and distorted and will show ''Lava" not sure what causes this now and then either. The problem are about to make this computer unusable. Also the operating system on this when I got it is Manjaro Linux, don't really know how to use this but that's what's on it right now. Just trying to save me an awesome computer I got for a good deal. Thanks for your help!

When the machine posts before it boots into whatever OS was on your system, does it look normal there? If so, someone probably botched the linux install. Go back to factory defaults and then fiddle on your own. Go tohttps://pcsupport.lenovo.com/ca/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-x-series-laptops/thinkpad-... Hit Access Recovery Media Download the recovery media for your system and install windows.
