Windows Explorer/File Explorer Always Opens Minimized

Q: Windows Explorer/File Explorer Always Opens Minimized

Hello Everyone.

I use Windows 8.1.

Until few days ago, everything was working fine. No idea what happened but whenever I open the File Explorer/Windows Explorer, it always opens minimized. Earlier I just needed to maximize it and close it so that when the next time I open it, it opens maximized. But when I do that now, it still opens minimized.

Not just that. I like to have my files and folders view to be as "large icons". But, its all in "details" view now. Earlier if something like this happened, I would change it once to "large icons" and it remained intact upon my viewing next time. However, it doesn't happen now. Inspite of changing the view settings to "large icons", they still open "details" view.

Any idea, how to solve both the issues? It would be very helpful.

Preferred Solution: Windows Explorer/File Explorer Always Opens Minimized

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Most icons can be right-clicked, choose Properties and on the Shortcut tab click Run and change from Normal Window to Minimized or to Maximized. Yours may be set for Minimized.

Windows Explorer has got quite an interesting behavior that I really don't understand; when I'm pasting in a file location (or folder location, for that matter) that contains a quotation mark at the very beginning, it launches Firefox, my default browser. Is there a reason for this, and can I disable it?

Hi guys new to this all but just got so desperate I had to sign up to ask. I've had windows 10 since November and just today it's been playing up. None of the apps open - they display a message "element not found" for explorer exe or for other things like chrome, ms word you click on it and nothing happens. Can't even turn off the computer (start > turn off just does nothing) I've tried pressing the power button on my PC but that just seems to put it into sleep mode and not properly restart it. Could someone help please? Thanks in advance

I recently had to do a system restore and now my .jpg and jpeg files have a bad file icon. They still do open with the windows pic program as I want them to - but only on the admin accout, I usually surf and play and do everything else with a user account, and even if I reset everything under folder options for the file associacions it somehow doesn't apply to the other account.
The funny thing is that windows tells me in the file association menu that I changed the file association's properties and can set them back to standart "photo suite 6" - a program that I uninstalled ages ago ... can I somehow set this back to the normal winxp picture and fax displaying thing?

For a few months, I'm guessing since around when Win 8.1 came out, "Save As" and the Browse file location icon have been opening Windows Explorer with some programs instead of my default file manger, XYplorer (default by the latter's settings). And the Windows Explorer window that does open is full screen without any size adjusting facility, that is, neither in the top right corner or by dragging the sides (the arrows are there but there's no drag). Two programs I use frequently that are exhibiting this are Internet Download Mgr and PDF X-Change Viewer. This wasn't a problem before recently under Win 8 or Win 7. Any ideas? Did MS make some changes in this regard with 8.1? (Win 8.1 Pro x64). Thanks,

Hey jbfoster,

I would strongly suggest you download Autoruns.exe from Windows Sysinternals. This utility will show you exactly what is being loaded when you start your system and allow you to temporarily or permanently disable the autorun. You will find the utility here:

I should note that the Windows 8 Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del or right-click on the toolbar) also has a startup section, but it does not give you as comprehensive a list as does autoruns.

Hope this helps.

I am just finishing building a new windows 10 home system. A few weeks ago I installed a new Seagate USB drive to act as a separate storage location. After I did that I got multiple notifications asking me what to do when this drive is accessed. I mistakenly chose open file explorer instead of do nothing.

Now every time this drive is accessed by my system (and I am not 100% sure why it is being accessed but think it may have something to do with backups), it opens an instance of file explorer. I am having difficulty finding where to alter this behavior. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

This happens in all browsers, Chrome, firefox and IE.
This also comes with youtube videos not playing correctly or crashing after a few seconds or not playing at all. So flash probably has something to do with it.
I already tried uninstalling/reinstalling flash/java/all browsers, updating all browsers, windows and flash. I tried the beta version of flash which worked slightly better but still not really.

When I click computer and can see all the drives, if I right click the hard drive or either the dvd-rom drive or the dvd-rw writer drive,or anything else listed on computer it has the list open, explorer ,open with ulead photo explorer, search, etc., all of these only have the option stuck to only open with ulead photo explorer.

If I try to right click and open any of these it brings it up in Ulead photo explorer.

Does anyone know how to fix this?

Is this why my dvd burner will not work?

Been grappling for some time to customizing the right pane of either Win7 or Win10 (not sure if they respond the same) to allow permanent column and column title arrangements. Ideally I would like to apply such attributes to a specific folder and all it's sub-folders. An example is below:
I would also love to be able to set these columns as fixed widths, but this is not as important as the specific columns themselves.

I was told to also post this iunder this category.

I'm about to tear out my hair. First Windows Explorer keeps stopping, searches for solution then restarts. About the time this problem, I noticed that Windows Explorer will change the original creation date on some of my files. It might be all files in folder or just certain types. I've yet to make a connection with when this is happening or what is causing it. Not necessarily when Windows Explorer stops. It's difficult when you can't tell which is the oldest/newest file in a folder.

I'm running Windows 7 64 bit, which I keep updated, McAfee, AntiMalware Bytes and SuperAntiSpyware, also all updated.

I'm begging! Can someone help me please?

Preface - first post, and I am fairly sophisticated computer user.

I double clicked an exe file by mistake the other day and now I have Internet Explorer popping up with random pages every now and then.
I never operate the computer as an administrator unless I have to, and I was operating under normal user credentials when I executed the above mentioned file.
To prevent the problem from occurring I have denied access to <C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe> to the user in question.

I've run full scans with "Spybot Search & Destroy", "Spyare Blaster". Clamwin and Trend Micro HouseCall are running now.
Appreciate I am slightly out of date with malware removal techniques - the last time I had a problem it was 6 years ago and the first two were state-of-the-art methods.

I am usually very well behaved but this time I just had one double click too much!

Kindly advice how to proceed as I am slightly lost.

A:ie 6 opens all windows with a minimized bar

Close all open windows.

Start IE from your desktop so that it comes up with just the title bar. Don't maximize it or anything.

Now, right click on the taskbar and select tile horizontally. IE should now go maximized.

Now close IE by hitting the x in the upper right.

Now the next time you start IE it should open up correctly.

Hi, great website you guys have, just ran across it couple weeks ago. I've been putering since late 70's, used to work for AT&T on Unix systems. I've done probably over 150 pc builds over the years. Last couple of years, been building pc's for a guy that was in the NBA playing for the Orlando Magic. Built 12 for him all total . Out of those 12, he gave me 3 for myself . The last few I built, he wanted SSD's to boot off of. I ended up with an extra ssd so put it in my system. Overall, not too impressed with the ssd, not something that I would include in a build for myself. True, boot times are lightening fast, but I really don't sit here and watch it. My routine is pretty much same everyday with the puter, turn it on, walk to kitchen to get a drink, maybe walk outside for a smoke . By time get back to puter, it's ready to go. And if you don't pay attention, you spend a lot of time installing, deleting, then re-installing because you missed the option to pick where you want it installed. Most default to the c: ( the ssd ) .
Sorry, all that has nothing to do with problem that I have been experiencing last couple weeks. When I click on computer , then click on a folder, it is opening up in a new window. If I right click on the folder , then click open, it opens in same window . I've gone to folder options in control panel, tried setting it to open in same window, then tried open in new window, same results. Google this problem and apparently it is widespread, but nobody se... Read more

A:Windows Explorer opens on every startup

Welcome to TSG!
When that happens it is generally caused by a conflict with a program that is starting up. The way to find that program is somewhat tedious but to my knowledge the only way.
Go to start\run and type in msconfig and select the startup tab.

Now disable everything except Explorer, systray, pchealth, and *statemgr. Now restart your system. Windows should start faster and the window should not appear.
Now go back to msconfig and add back in a group of four items at a time and restart. When the problem resurfaces then you have isolated the item to one of the four. Now you will have to disable three of the four and restart again until you have isolated which program is causing it. Once found you will have to delay the start of that program by leaving it disabled in the startup group and placing a shortcut to is in C:\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup folder.

Norton internet security Iamapp.exe was notorious for this problem.

Let us know if that helps you.

Before, when I first opened the Windows Explorer, it always appeared in its full size, occupying the entire screen, like other Windows apps, e.g. Word, IE etc.

But since a couple of days ago, it suddenly started opening in reduced size, occupying only part of the screen. Of course, I can increase it to full by clicking on the square icon on top right, but this is annoying.

Is there a way to restore WE as it was and should be, i.e. open directly in full screen size?

A:Windows Explorer opens in reduced size

Windows XP? This usually works for me. Open Windows Explorer, expand it to full size and close it. Open it again and it should open full sized. Also, make sure that, "Remember each folder's view settings," box is checked in Folder Options.

Is there some way to customize the way Windows Explorer opens? The default setting displays all the drives and folders compressed under My Computer and I have to open My Computer every time to get to the drives and files. I'd like to have Windows Explorer open with all my hard drives displayed with folders one level deep.

Earlier today I was customizing icons in Folder Options (I run XP) and I changed the File Folder icon--no other changes whatsoever to the file type--and later I found that when I double clicked folders it opened the Windows search option instead of Explorer. I went back to Folder Options and made sure that "Open in same window" was checked. I fiddled with the action settings and managed to get it to open in Explorer, but no matter I do folders opens in NEW Explorer windows. I tried setting the default action to both explore and open, and neither worked. This is driving me crazy. What can I do?

(edit: somehow part of my post got eaten....sorry if it's a bit patchy)

Yes, yes, I've googled it already.  And bing-ed it just for fun too.

This doesn't work:

Nor does this:

Yes, yes, I've checked the Open in same folder option in folder options.
I've used shellex to disable context menu items.
I've rebooted a hundred times.
This is rediculous.  Windows should only recognize ONE setting for this and that is the one in folder options.  Anything else that affects it is a BUG!
I'm on build 7100 RC.
And I'm quite frustrated with this.

Please help!Jared

Hi!! The problem lies in this sh***y MVT application which you must install before downloading beta of whole Mcaffe center. I've removed only the MVT (Mcaffe Virtual Technician) and explorer started working automagically just like it should. MVT is used to report bugs to Mcaffe... and now how to properly report a bug without an app for doing it? :]

When I put Windows Explorer in the Task Bar and I click it, it goes to the Libraries. Would there be any possibility to change it, to open up to the folder of your Account Name? As in the folder that has the documents, download, music, picture, and videos.

Hi i was wondering how I used to have my windows explorer open up in DETAILs rather than having to always swithch the view to details because my explorer opens crap in icons. How do you fix it so I can open things automatically in details?

A:windows explorer opens in DETAILs not ICONS

From the MS KB:

Set the global folder options

To specify the global settings that apply to all folders, follow these steps:
Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Folder Options.
On the General tab, click the options that you want.
On the View tab, click the options you want.
Click OK.

Note To reset all folders to the default settings, click Restore Defaults on the General tab or on the View tab.

Hi to all, i have a laptop running Windows 7 Professional. The problem is strange and havent had it on any other Windows 7 machine.

If i click the folder icon on the bottom tool bar (windows explorer) then in the left hand pane expand the C drive then right click on any folder it instantly displays a dialog saying Explorer has experienced a problem and needs to close, windows is
looking for a fix for this problem (cant remember exact wording) then Explorer.exe restarts. This happens on the local C drive and Network drives.
I though it could be a permissions problem so have taken ownership of all files & folders on the C drive which made no difference, i have removed the laptop from our server / domain and it is still the same / no change.
Can anyone shed any light on this problem or offer any ideas on fixing it? the laptop is only a few months old and is i5 / 4GB RAM Dell machine running Windows 7 Pro SP1 office 2003 Pro, checked for virus & adware & all clean.

A:Explorer.exe crashes when righ click on item in left pane on windows explorer nothing in system logs, explorer.exe restarts.

The faulting module (Fault Module Name: SHELL32.dll) shell32.dll is a Windows system file however the file that is actually causing the crash may be a third party file which from the symptoms
may be a third party context menu handler.
The following link has some info and a download to ShellExView which you can use to selectively disable third party context menu handlers to find out a problematic one:
You could try disabling all non-Microsoft context menu handlers and then, if the problem resolves, re-enable them one at a time to see which one was the problem.
BTW, the error should be logged in the Event Viewer Application log as a Application Error involving explorer.exe

Internet Explorer (8) has started randomly popping up new windows showing adverts. I was initially using IE7, and the pop ups were only showing as new tabs, but since I downloaded IE8 they are now popping up as new windows. It does it every few minutes and it doesn't appear to be when I'm on a particular website. I've ran McAfee virus scans daily but nothing is showing up. My laptop is only a couple of months old and I have no idea what's going on and if it's something I've done? Can anyone please help? Thanks!

I have used the tutorial on this site to add my Computer to the nav pane as I am a school Admin and need it for the mapped drives and not libraries. Its added fine and deleted what I wanted but when i open up my computer or their homefolder its expanding the nav pane the full width of the screen with a slim bit at the right for the folders. I can't seem to reset this as everytime I reboot it goes back to how it looked before.

Anyone had this or has a solution to fix it? I have tried a few things including the resetshell file on this site.. and I found a shell32.dll which moved it to the right but my computer still covers all the nav pane.

If that can't help then I may need to disabel the nav pane altogether but I can't find that either as GP doesn't have any obvious solutions.

A:Windows Explorer opens Nav Pane full width

Welcome to the Seven Forums

Have you tried dragging the edge to the left when you get the double arrow? Look at screenshot below it does not show the double arrow for some reason the screenshots will not pick it up but you should get one there.
If you have tried that already do Option 2 of this tutorial SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker it will not harm any data or programs you have installed it will try to find and repair any corrupt system files that you have.

If you wish to turn off the navigation pane look at this tutorial Navigation Pane - Turn On or Off
