This happens on LINUX Hosts - (Opensuse, Centos and Mint)

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi there
Workstation Version 10.2 Host running these distros - same observations for both hosts. Opensuse / Linux Mint 17 both 64 bit. Guest is windows 8.1 update 1.

I seem on the df -h command get a /tmp file around 4GB which is 95% allocated. This goes down to 0% when the vm is powered off.

I can't seem to find any way to increase the size of this file or configure it in any way -- is this just VMware using disk space or will my Guest eventually fail because lack of disk space. There's actually plenty of space on the HDD itself. !!

I have recently installed Redhat Enterprise V.3 as guest on Windows XP host using vmware.

After adding the necessary lines in the 2 ifcfg-eth0 files, the device eth0 is finding the IP correctly at boot time (or by usinf ifup eth0) and I can use folder sharing between the host and the gust. However I still can't connet to the Interent from the guest.

My windows host internet conection is working fine.
I had it working for a short peiod of time on the guest. (I was using VM - settings - customized - eth bridged-default)

Has anyone seen this before?

I installed Quick Launch on my Taskbar (Windows 7, 64-bit).

I don't know how to position it next to the Start button.

The area in the Taskbar between the Start button and the Quick Launch toolbar appears to be reserved to display open applications.

Dragging the Quick Launch toolbar all the way to the left doesn't work. It stops 2 inches from the Start button, allowing room for open application icons.

Does anyone know how to fix this?

Hi there

running latest build as a VM on a Linux Host (VMware workstation v 12.01) the taskbar can't be accessed in FULL SCREEN mode if the taskbar is selected to be at the BOTTOM of the screen.

It works fine if you have the taskbar positioned at the sides or the Top !!!! Go figure !

Not a mega show stopper but I still prefer the taskbar to be at the bottom.

Running the same W10 (latest build) as a VM on a WINDOWS host (W7 or another W10 system) taskbar works even at the bottom.

this is probably a VMware / Linux video driver problem so I don't see a fix to this any time soon.

BTW the same problem also happens with a W7 VM on a Linux host using VMware workstation build 12.0.1

note in Windowed mode taskbar works correctly wherever on the screen it is selected.

I don't need help, I just wanted to post my solution.
I recently setup the latest version of Vmware player on Ubuntu 13.04 and found myself unable to download the tools for it. error try again later or something along those lines. I searched about online for answers but google only presented 1 relevant topic and it didn't have a solution. Anyways I've discovered how to get around this, it's quite obvious really, I feel dumb for taking so long to figure it out. Lauch VMware player as root, then the tools will download successfully. Hopefully this will save someone a world of heart-ache.

Hi there

I usually run a LINUX HOST for testing Windows VM's - but I need to test some new releases of various Linux distros so I've created some VM's --easy enough and running them on a Windows Host.

However I can't attach a USB drive with a Linux file system (XFS) to the VM as the Windows HOST rejects the HDD wanting me to format it !!. There's 2.7 TB of media files on it - I want to test running media server in a VM.

Anybody know how to bypass the Windows nag prompt about the HDD and be able to attach it direct to the VM.

(The other way round is no problem -- never a problem loading NTFS HDD's on to Linux machines -- however the NTFS file system is SLOW compared with XFS -- on USB3 device on Native windows transfer rate of 1 TB of files from fast NTFS HDD to NTFS USB3 device is max 82 Mib/s - average for whole transfer. On same machine with Native Linux and XFS to XFS (using same HDD's and USB 3 port avg speed is 350 mib/s !! -- HUGE difference !!!).

Note I have to have a Windows Host for this --I know I could run Linux VM's from a Linux Host but in this case I do have to use a Windows Host as that will be the destination system at the end of testing.

BTW I'm running VMWARE workstation 12.1 on W10 Pro Host.

I recently installed Zorin and YLMF on my Vmware player(two separate installs). The problem I am having is that I am unable to install Vmware Tools on either the YLMF nor the Zorin. Before you ask I installed both to see which one I like best and I'm still undecided mostly because I can't get either one configured correctly.

I have searched the net and found various videos...the problem is that the video is mainly about how to use the software once you install it.

I've also found written instructions about unzipping the install.pl file(can't remember the actual name) file to the desktop and double clicking the file to install it and I've done that with no success at all.

Any help would be appreciated.

I have gone through several tech forums but unable to find answer for it. Though in multiple forums one statement was common that Windows will strip the VLAN information when packet received/transmits through network adapter.
I would really appreciate if anyone can help me with this.

I am experiencing the following very strange intermittent problems and evil behavior in XP.

My Start Menu sometimes only appears for a split second when clicked and will not stay displayed. Also minimised apps. wont maximise and apps. and short cuts on the desktop wont launch when double left clicked and instead show properties as if they were right clicked!!

I have done the following to try and resolve these issues.

1. Updated from SP1 to SP 2 as well as all the security updates.

2. Ran Adaware and Spybot to find any unwelcome visitors. Adaware only found one minor issue.

3. Ran Symantec Antivirus which found and quarantined several viruses.

4. Ran WinDoctor which found and said it resolved quite a few issues.

This is really a pain as it makes the system virtually unusable except for when it is behaving which is rare.

Would be grateful for any suggestions, solutions, incantations or workarounds for this issue/s

Kind regards

Hi binaryboy, Welcome to TSG!!

Please post a HJT log for us to review.

Click here to download HJTsetup.exe: http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/HJTSetup.exe
Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.

Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Goal: To have host machine (win7) to use wired interface (lan1) ( as default, while vm (winxp) uses wireless interface (wireless1) ( as default. Each interface is a seperate network and seperate isp.

Using Vmware player 3.1.3

I have set the VM to bridged mode, and bridged that virtual adapter to the wireless interface with vmnetcfg. VM is now able to get out on the internet, ipchicken shows its going out on the wireless isp.

On the host machine, I am also going out on the wireless interface.
I changed metric on wired (lan1) to 1 for gateway AND interface
changed metric on wireless (wireless1) to 100 for interface (no gateway option)

Now, the host machine goes out on the lan1 gateway, great!
Also changed adapter priority, set lan1 above wireless1

Now, when going back to the VM, it is not able to get out on the internet.

If I remove metric for gateway on lan1, I will default back to wireless on the host, Even with the
priority showing lan1 before wireless1..

I guess what im asking windows to do is route all traffic from host through lan1, and route all traffic from vm through wireless1, concurrently.

Hi there

not a big problem but if my HOST has a wifi connection to the internet then a VM (or at least Networking) )doesn't work when enabling BRIDGED networking (NAT works OK but I need Bridged !!))

If I connect the host to my internet via Ethernet or to a "Wifi-->Ethernet bridge" then bridged networking is fine.

I usually use the wifi-ethernet bridge anyway as it's humungously more stable than the basic wifi cards (and the bridge connects to my Internet at fast 5GHZ wifi - avoiding contention problems on 2.4GHZ network).

Hi all,

But I am not able to set the display properly in RHEL4 which can perfectly fit to the laptop screen so that I can get rid of the troublesome job of scrolling to view the full page. I have at present chosen These options.
Monitor Type: LCD panel 1600 X 1200
Video Card: VESA driver (generic)
Resolution: 1600 X 1200
Color Depth: Millions of Colors

I tried various other options. But nothing else seems to be suitable. Do I have to install some dedicated driver to get the resolution option of 1600 X 900 which is the Display resolution of my Host OS (Windows XP). Dell Studio Laptops use ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570 Display Adapters for 1555 model.

Can you please suggest me which option should I choose in RHEl 4 to get the 1600 X 900 resolution option and get rid of this problem?

Not that familiar with VMWare, but from Chapter 5 in the User Guide, if you install the VMWare tools:

Lets you drag and drop files between host operating systems and Windows, Linux,
Solaris, and FreeBSD guest operating systems

Chapter 8, titled Transferring Files and Text
Between the Host and Guest might also be useful.

You can transfer files directly over the network if you are not using NAT for the network connection type.

I've been reluctant to upgrade to W10 because of fear that things already installed will not work. I took the plunge and upgraded W7-pro on my ACER laptop and my fears are true. No previously installed programs installed in W7 launch when I click the link in the Start Menu, including Office.

Additionally, when I click on links to system items, like services or event viewer or run or anything, I get the following message: "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action..."

On the taskbar there's File Explorer, Firefox, Chrome and an email client. None of the links work when I single or double click on them. NOTHING in the start menu --> all Apps work. I click, nothing happens, not even a message. If I double click the executable in File Explorer, the program runs.

I've run SFC, created a new admin user, tried a clean boot, even reinstalled Office as a test, nothing is working, no change to the functionality. According to W10, all updates are installed.

I'm glad I didn't upgrade, or break, my main PCs by installing W10.

How can these issues be resolved???

A:Programs and Apps in W10 don't launch

I don't have a solution to your issues, except that perhaps you won't mind reverting back to Windows 7 Pro if you have exhausted your search for a solution.
It can be done PROVIDED ......
1. You installed Win 10 LESS than 30 days ago.
2. You have NOT deleted the windows.old from the system.

Left click at Start button > left side, select Settings > select Update & Security > left side, select Recovery > right side, under Go back to Windows 7, click the Get Started button.

Dear friends,

I have printers defined on the Linux host and would like to have the Win7 guest to "see" them.

Hi, new to this forum and I have a problem with my Epson printer Smartmedia card reader. It does download pics from my Fugi camera via USB port. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling printer software but no luck. Any ideas??Thanks

A:Smartmedia card won't launch apps

Welcome to TSG. I’ll give it a go until someone comes along with an Epson printer with a card reader.

If the card reader is making a drive letter in My Computer or Windows Explorer right click on it, then Properties > Auto Play > Pictures. Check to select an action. That menu should open any time you insert the card in the reader if the reader makes a drive letter.

If it isn’t making a drive letter go Start > All Programs. Find your Epson software or printer driver and open it. Look around in the file menu for a wizard. Or find wizard in the help file.

If there is nothing listed in programs go to Control Panel > Printers and Faxes. Select your printer, Printer and then either Printing Preferences or Properties. Look in the tabs for the wizard.

I've had this problem for a couple of months now and decided that it was bugging me to the point that I had to do something about it. I bought the ASUS laptop with Windows 8 already installed so I didn't have to do much other than update the OS. Before the update, everything was working well. Then after the update (or some time before), all Windows 8 apps would just stop launching. Every time I would click on an app from the Metro screen, it would try to open for a split second (when it does that screen flip transition) and then it would just take me back to the desktop screen without launching.

Separate programs that I've installed like Adobe Suite and Office programs work just fine. I have no idea what the deal is. I've heard of plenty of W8 horror stories yet I thought they were pretty rare and I assumed my laptop would be fine. What should I do?

After I installed 8, I moved the my own user folder to a secondary drive as I have Win8 on a SSD. Since then many metro apps will not launch.

My laptop (Sony Vaio / Win 7 Pro 64 bit) began playing up a couple of months ago, occasionally clicking on an icon (eg Firefox, Outlook...) in the taskbar (or from the start menu as well) failed to launch the program. The 'cursor wheel' would spin but then a few seconds later...nothing. A reboot generally fixed it. Over the past couple of months this has got much worse, to the point where now nothing will launch and a reboot doesn't fix it.
In safe mode, all appears to be OK. I am working in safe mode now.
I tried sfc /scannow. No problems reported
I have run virus scans with: G Data, SAS, MBAM, MSE, Spybot. No malware reported.
Before I surrender & reinstall Windows, can anyone suggest a course of action to troubleshoot this?
In the event viewer there are a shedload of errors of various types -typically relating to (1) inability to pick up an IP froDHCP server or (2) Microsoft Security Client OOBE stopped. Dunno if they are relevant or just normal running.

So on my dad's notebook, an ASUS K55N, all of the sudden, all of the Modern UI apps stopped working, every time he clicks on one he gets a message saying "This App Can't Open", and all he did was run Windows Update this morning (he downloaded SP1 for Office, the big Update was installed yesterday, and he could use these Apps with no problem).

So what's going on here? What can be done?

(Moderator Edit: moved log post to the HJT Forum for team analysis and member help. jgweed)Dear Friends on the Board,I got hit by a virus after stupidly opening up an email I thought I recognized. It's a fairly new DELL system now ruined by this thing and I couldn't tell you what it is. I have perused a few very informative boards and run a lot of stuff - some things fixed. Here is a rundown of current casualties:Powerpoint won't openExcel only opens in /safe modeWord seems to run fine!Helpful little recommended programs like Ewido and VindoFix will download but will not install.Windows Firewall "Due to an unidentified problem, cannot display Windows Firewall Settings"(After running a recommended fix on one of the forums, the Firewall came back to life, but has since starteddisplaying the error again)For a while Task Manager was not opening, but after running Kelly's fix, it now works fine.I tooled around in the Group Policy settings for firewall, made a couple changes that did not help. Now I can never find my way back to where I made those changes to unchange them.Guestolo suggested to another user to download and install latest HiJack This to its own folder on the HDDand I did that, too. Hello Philip1983Welcome to BC. You are right winm32.dll is very bad but so is polymorph.dll. So, your computer may have been compromised. It would be prudent to take some precautionary steps if you were using this computer for sensitive personal transactions. It would also be a good idea to disconnect this computer from the internet and from any networked computers until it's cleaned using it only to download the necessary programs.Click here to download haxfix.exe and save it to your desktop.Double click on haxfix.exe to install haxfix. (standard installation path is c:\program Files\haxfix)Checkmark "Create a desktop icon"Click "Next"When the installation is completed, make sure that the checkmark "Launch HaxFix" is placedClick "Finish"A red "dos window" (dos box) will open with options:1. Make logfile2. Run auto fix3. Run manual fixE. Exit HaxfixSelect option 1. Make logfile by typing 1 and then pressing EnterHaxfix will start scanning the computer. When it is finished a logfile will open: haxlog.txt > (c:\haxfix.txt)Copy the contents of that logfile and paste it into this thread.

I'm working on my Mother in-law’s PC and I'm about to give up. Can't launch most applications. IN taskMgr they show as running but just freeze(zero cpu). I'm able to launch some things like Internet and word/excel but not others like windows mail and regedit, and can't uninstall programs. I am able to run everything fine in SafeMode. Have McAfee but it can't scan until I update. After downloading updates, I can't install them. Network icon in systray has a red X, but its currently connected. Tried system restore but no dice. Can someone stir me in the right direction? Does this sound like a virus or a setting the may have gotten changed? My Mother in-law stated that she recieved help over the phone by her ISP support hooking up a wireless USB device a couple months ago. They apparently had her install software and make changes in the control panel but she can't remember what they had her do. They never did get her on-line.

Various Office apps launch spontaneously while using IE8. I do not seem to need to click a link to cause this. Well, maybe I do. I am just reading along and an Office app will launch. Most often, PowerPoint.

A:Various Office apps launch spontaneously while using IE

Hmm, the internet doesn't have much on this. What other Office programs have done this, besides PowerPoint? Has it ever happened while using a different browser, such as Chrome or Firefox? Try to see if there's a pattern based on what websites you're visiting, even if you don't find that it's caused by clicking anything.
