Preferred Solution: windows xp storage problem

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I was asked by answers.Microsoft.com to refer this question to this forum.

BTW there doesn't seem to be an option for Windows 10 forum. So I  had to choose Windows 8.

1st of all everything was fine until 2nd of December.

My Laptop installation of Winodw 7 and then upgraded to 10 was configured from the start to have the USER folders (u sing a script provided by Microsoft) on an SD card through an Expresscared media read/write because my system disk is a 64gig SSD

I turned the machine on it couldn'the read my user profile.I tried to login in safe mode but I got sihost warning: unknown hard Error! But I got into prompt screen and ran diskpartThere is an inbuilt SD card reader slot in the machine where I store large downloadBut the system could only see the main SSD and the expresscared SD card with user folders on itI ran sfc /scannow &  then DISM and the sfc /scannow again until both were successful. But again diskpart  only detected the SSD and Expresscard SD cardBut the attributes on the SD card claims that Current state read-only : Yes although read-only flag is No.I have checked the SD card on other machines and it is not write protectedI have tried introducing writeprotected entry in the registry with values of 0 and 1 without successI have tried everything else that I could in Safe mode but other than what is expected in safemode (e... I created a Storage pool with the following setup. Three 3TB drives with parity all in an external enclosure with eSata and USB 2/3 ports. It was connected via USB when created and had production data loaded and tested without any issues.
After a few days of use I decided to see what happened when I tried to access it via the eSata port. No luck, due to a driver on the eSata card issue with Win 8. So I powered all back down and plugged back in via USB. At this point the Storage pool went
into the state as per the screenshot below. Any suggestions to either fix the issue and/or retrieve the data that is in the volume?

Hello, I recently purchased a Memorex 128mb Thumbdrive USB device. I plug it into a USB drive and it operates fine. But when I remove it is when the problems start. If I hit "Eject drive", the My Computer screen locks up and becomes unusable. If I just remove the device without ejecting it, the drive still appears in My Computer, but it is blank and when I re-insert the device, it is still blank and I cannot read it.

If I restart my computer and plug the device back in, it works until I remove it. Then it does the same thing. I am using a USB TV tuner which works fine, so I am at a loss. Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks.

Hello people,

I am new to Windows 7 and need some help to resolve a problem I have when changing the Windows Live Mail storage folder location.

I usually work in three different computers (two desktop PCs and a notebook) and want to keep all my e-mail messages and folders everywere I go without having to import messages, update them or keep a copy at servers, or things like that. Until now, I resolved this very well by keeping the storage folder in a usb drive. All the folders, e-mails, acccounts, etc., were correctly showed when I opened the Windows Live Mail application no matter in which of the three different computers (running XP SP3 32 bits) I plugged the usb drive in.

Now I have installed Windos 7 Ultimate 64 bits in my new PC and after changing the default storage folder location at the Windows Live Mail program to point to the one in my usb drive (as usual), I get an error the next time I open the application when it tries to load the messages, etc. from the new location. The error says:

"Closing Windows Live Mail. Your calendar contains corrupt data that is forcing Windows Live Mail to close."

What is going wrong? The storage works perfectly when is used in all the Windows XP 32bits PCs, but cannot be opened in my Windows 7 64 bits PC?

By the way, I don't use the calendar at all and all the Windows Live Mail versions are the same in all my PCs (except for the 32 vs 64 bits versions I supose).

Any ideas? I hope some... Read more

A:Windows Live Mail storage folder problem

Ok, I found a solution. Just in case it is useful for someone else with the same problem here is what I did:

1. Deleted the Calendar folder at the storage folder I was trying to use (the one in the USB drive). This resolved the error message, but then a new error appeared saying that the folder was in use by another application and the program closed.

2. Changed the properties for the message store folder in the USB drive and set all access permissions for it. This resolved the second error and now everything works like a charm.

Hope this helps others.

Thank you and greetings,

I need some help and if anyone can help me I will be very appreciated. My system is Windows 7 Ultimate X64.
1. USB port.
I used to have a Lenovo thinkpad W520, the USB ports can still provide power and the devices connected to the port won't be disconnected after the PC turning into sleep mode even power off, but everytime when I wake up my Precision 7510, the keyboad need a long wait to be reconnected and all of the external hard drives are reconnected too (Auto play also pops out). And I cannot charge my cellphone even if the precision is in sleeping mode with power connected to it.

2. External Monitor,
I get a Dell P2417H monitor. I connect the monitor to my PC through Display port.
Then I use the Screen Resolution to Identify the monitor. I then use "Identify" to identify the monitor, at first both of the monitors show (1\2), which is correct because windows is set to duplicate the monitors. Then I selected Show desk top only on 1 and then "Identify" the monitors. Both of the monitors show a big 1. Then I selected show desk top only on 2 and then "Identify" the monitors. Both of the monitors show a big 2.(My p2417H is actually 2)
Then I select apply so only p2417H shows the display and close the laptop's lid. (I set the power options, so that the PC won't be turn off when I close the lid or after a long deactivation)
As long as I close the lid and turn the laptop into sleep mode and wake it up. The monitor setting... Read more

Some of what you're experiencing may be due to the different hardware than you had in the older system - however, one BIG possibility:
Windows 7 does not fully support the power management features of the Skylake CPU and chipset in your system.  Even if Windows 7 is correctly installed, there will be missing features (Microsoft never implemented the advanced Skylake power management features in anything older than Windows 8).
You'd likely experience some of the same issues with a Skylake Lenovo system.
The Skylake platform in your system WILL run Windows 7 (it's the last Intel platform that will;  the newly released Kaby Lake won't run it at all), but it won't implement all the Skylake power management features it has no drivers for (and never will have drivers for).  Unless you're completely stuck with Windows 7, most of the issue -- or all of them -- will go away if you move to Windows 10.  If you don't do it now, this is the last hardware you'll be buying -- as above, Windows 7 is history as of the release of the new Kaby Lake platform.

I've got the latest SATA AHCI Driver for my system according to Gateway.
As for the latest Intel RST software/drivers, I have version on the IAStorDataMgrSvc.exe file, which is the same version as the SATA drivers I found on the Gateway site.

Lately, the last few weeks, I have been having problem with my DVD drive disappearing.
In the Intel RST app, its shows my HD on Internal Port 0; and Internal Port 1 as empty.
I've only just checked this status after my DVD disappeared.
I'm guessing that my DVD is on Port 1 because I get a dialog popping up saying something about Port 1 being empty. Then my DVD drive is gone.

If I reboot, it comes back.
And it may stay for 5 minutes or 5 days (or more), then the DVD just disappears with the Intel RST popup.

I may not be doing anything particular, youtube, working (EagleCad and other Circuit board and schematic design software, and related utilities), general web browsing. Nothing special and nothing I haven't been doing for years.

I do Windows updates on a fairly regular basis (At least once every 2 week if not once a week)
This does kind of have me wondering if a recent Windows update broke something.
It would not be the first time I have seen that happen.
And as a side note, although its been 7+ years, I used to work in IT repairing pretty much everything, so I'm comfortable ge... Read more

Hello all:
I'm new here, so please bear with me.

I have a lovely little HP laptop which is fairly limited in its capacity. I love it because it is easy to handle and doesn't hurt my lap. It uses Win10.

The problem is the C drive is completely full. I save everything to my E drive and have a lot on finger drives, but no matter, it never goes down. I even have Word on the E drive. I can't imagine what is taking up all the room. I've emptied the recycle bin and the cache and everything else I can find. I am not getting updates because of this.

Does anyone have any ideas that can help me?

I was using my laptop like normal yesterday, just going through some websites. And then I opened up a folder and I noticed something weird. Whenever I tried right clicking on a file, it would give me limited options. It wouldn't give me the usual "Open" or "Open with" or "Explore" etc, it would just show "Extract" "Add to archive" the usual winrar options. And then all of a sudden I tried again and I couldn't right click at all. So I closed the folder and reopened it and it was even worse. I noticed parts of the folder were missing. Not like literally missing but stuff that was supposed to be there wasn't there. Like the whole section that says "File, View" etc was gone and the whole left side of the folder was gone. So I closed it and opened up firefox and the browser was all black for some reason.

Later I tried to open up winamp and I noticed I couldn't minimize it or click certain buttons on it. And when I tried to start a chat on Skype (instant messaging program) I couldn't. It then gave me the error: "System error: not enough storage to carry out operation" or something similar to that.

I realized later that I could only do certain things if I only had one thing open. I can't use Skype if Winamp is open and I can't open folders if Firefox is open, etc.

I don't get it though. I didn't do anything, why is acting up all of a sudden. I have 1 gig of RAM on... Read more

I purchased a first one (80 Gb) with an external power supply which never worked properly and I discarded it.

The problem may be that in the hidden units of my configuration, I still find the old mass storage with its 3 generic volumes (partitions) which I can abslolutely not delete from the configuration (uninstall does not work).

Can anybody help me ? .... many thanks in advance.

I recentley made another thread about wifi disconnections, which were fixed with a new router. Now theres another problem, not wifi, but Networked storage via Netgear ReadyShare.

I had two routers with the same features, both readyshare enabled. Never really tried it as there was no need for it. As I got a new DGND3300 yesterday, i thought why not give it a try.

It didnt work. I get some error saying 'Can't read from the source file or disk'. When I use the old netgear (DGN2200) with the same feature and same hard disk, same error occours. I can use a different hard disk with both routers, Same thing happens.

So, I thought it must be a corrupt thingy somewhere. But then i realised all three laptops are showing me the same thing whilst using the readyshare (Mapped as a network drive).

I can connect the hard disk to my laptop and it transfers data perfectley, just when I connect it up to the router to use readyshare, it gives me that message.

(I dont know if this is worth anything, but I can connect the hard disk to a Belkin Network USB Hub and it works perfectley!)

Thanks in advance. Its an annoying issue.

I own a 465Gig removable storage device. It is USB powered. I recently plugged it to my smart TV and reformatted it so I could record TV shows directly to it from the TV.

Not to much later I realized that the recording process on the TV was kind of primitive so I decided to change it back to computer formatting.

The problem now is when I plug it back to the computer it says to use this device windows needs to reformat it. I go fine and go through the process on the desktop. It says it is going to make it NTFS and I have selected device presets.

The real problem now is when you initiate the format process another message comes up saying "Windows is unable to reformat the device"

So now I have a device that is dead to me unless you have a solution for me.

That's the problem with smart TVs. They use a format which is incompatible with PCs. I would clean the disk and then try again.

Welcome to TSG!

If found the information below using the Windows Live Help option. Could it be that you have exceeded the 30day/500 message limit for this month?

You can add photos to e-mail messages in two ways: inline (Part of the body of an e-mail message) or in a photo e-mail (An e-mail message containing one or more photos in a layout of your choice. You can format your photos, add captions, colored borders, and more. If you create a photo e-mail while you're signed in to Windows Live Mail with a Windows Live ID, you can save high-quality versions of the photos on Windows Live servers).

If you create a photo e-mail while you're signed in to Windows Live Mail with a Windows Live ID, you can save high-quality versions of the photos on Windows Live servers. These photos are linked to thumbnail versions in the e-mail. This means that the e-mail will be smaller and that the recipients can view the higher resolution photos in an online slideshow without downloading them.

The formatting options in Mail vary, depending on whether you insert the photos inline or create a photo e-mail.

Photos saved on the Windows Live servers remain available for 30 days. You can upload a maximum of 500 images to the Windows Live servers each calendar month. Photo e-mail messages can't be larger than 500 megabytes (MB).Click to expand...

Has anyone tried the new Storage Spaces feature in Windows 8? Your experience with it?

More specifically:

1. If this system is used on a shared network with other operating systems such as XP and Windows 7, can the storage pool drives be set up as shared, and become visible and usable from the XP and Win 7 machines?

2. If you have a Network Backup drive, like WD My Book Live, will it see and back up the Storage Spaces configured drive just like any other drive on the network?

A:Storage Spaces (Storage Pool) Experience?

I've only set this up on a Windows Server 2012 configuration therefore I cannot provide the exact steps on how to set one up in a client environment. That being said, a storage space/pool is essentially a virtual disk that resides on one or multiple physical disks allowing you to accumulate free space. For example if I have multiple servers with free space on their data drives I can then create a storage pool to accumulate this. To allocate this storage pool/space to a user or machine you will need to decide what you wish to do with it. Below are a couple of examples of how:

Share via Windows Folder Sharing (UNC Path)Use iSCSI to use the current ethernet infastructure allowing you to assign the storage pool/space a drive letter to the client machineIn a server environment you may wish to use it for DFS (Distributed File System) to maintain redundancy

Personally I use my storage pool as an iSCSI drive for which i have partitioned.

You can only use the free space of a non Windows install drive. To my knowledge you cannot overcome this with partitioning.

In relation to your second question, you will only able to use the share as a safepoint backup if it is shared via Windows Folder Sharing. For example: \\computername\share

Also you will need to make sure that the NAS is on the same workgroup as the Windows 8 machine hosting the storage pool otherwise it will not be able to find the share. Hopefully this is what you asking however pleas... Read more

There's a Windows.old file that for some reason I cannot delete no matter what...tried adding an external (flash) storage to no avail...At my wits end...there has to be a way to retrieve some if not all my storage back...

Windows 7.
With Google I couldn't find answer, how to handle USB removable media inside camera.
With camera there is no "Safely remove hardware and eject media" option.
When Photo camera is connected, a new camera device is installed and GUI window is opened with option to browse or copy photos. But there is no removable storage devise eject button on notification area. The USB removable Storage devise is also present on File Manager Computer left panel but again, there is no mouse right button eject option as normally with removable storage devices. I have checked in on several computers. How to understand. I don't believe that it's camera specific but Camera is Canon S95.
Any ideas?

Can you set the camera to "Disk Mode"? If so, it will treat the camera as a flash drive.

Some of you might remember me from here. I followed the steps and it solved my problem, though I backed up the INFCACHE.1 file just in case (By renaming it to INFCACHE1.bak.bak.bak). I thought my problem was solved, but when I plugged in my other drives (about 300gigs-1.5TB), they exhibited the same symptoms, but weren't listed in My Computer. I noticed when I plugged in my 1gb flash drive, it was listed in My Computer sixteen times faster than my 16 gig. I don't exactly have the patience to wait eight days to begin using my largest hard drive again, so is there any way to read the INFCACHE.1 file and manually remove the corruption or copy the proper data over from the corrupted one to the new one?

When I try to access any removable storage device (DVD, pendrive, memory stick using a flash card reader) on my Windows Vista Business, I always get a "access is denied" message. And now all the removable devices listed on Windows have a red "not allowed" symbol (as you can see here: http://img477.imageshack.us/img477/8504/problemadc4.jpg )

I believe the problem started when Windows froze while the computer was reading a memory stick, so I had to reboot it using directly the power button. Before that, everything was working fine (and they're still working under Linux).

I have already tried to reinstall both the flash card reader and the dvd drive, and it didn't help. I did a chkdsk too. My guess is that it has something to do with the removable storage manager or something like that.

Any help would be appreciated.

On the keyboard, press the windows key + r, in the run box, type gpedit.msc, click ok, expand Administrative Templates, System, Removable Storage Access. Check if any policies are configured. Under CD and DVD: Deny Read Access, and : Deny Write Access, try disabling them. Reboot any see if access is allowed now to the DVD drive.

I've just got a StarTech dock station for the Hard Drive (with Esata and USB 3.0 ports). When I first used it first time. The first thing I use is ESATA port and ran without a problem (run CrystalDiskInfo and CrstalDiskMark to test) and also I format the drive.

But when I try USB 3.0 port is won't response well (using express card). For example it found new hardware and open the drive - but then I ran CrystalDiskInfo or CrstalDiskMark it won't open unless I disconnect the USB then the program will open after I disconnect the USB. I've try copy a file across nope crash or stop working. So I've try using USB 2 to see if not the USB 3.0 same problem but gone back to Esata port work fine!!!

So I’ve try on another laptop to see if not the Dock problem. And USB 2 work!!!! even USB 3.0 work using Express card so it not the dock problem (The laptop is running Win XP 32 bits).

I also got WD passport and book (1tb/3tb) and they both work fine on my laptop plus the USB 3.0.

So what I'm doing wrong? I can't pin the problem on my laptop with USB issues with the dock station. Any idea?? Don't really want to re install win 7 to see if that fix it.

First post from inexperienced...

I bought a new WD 500Gb usb device, wanted to format it to FAT32 so I could interface with PS3 and laptop with video etc.
like I said I am not all that experienced.. and looked on the web for help

ended up formatting it in DOS for 6 hrs for it to finish saying the volume was too big
i then tried to run FAT32 Formatter but it said the volume had collapsed and did i want to initialise? I said yes
since then i cannot read the drive, its like it doesn't exist any more, so cannot reformat back into any type let alone FAT32

I hope i have not ruined my new drive?

Will much appreciate any help

Hello Thommotir, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Does it show up in Disk Management (diskmgmt.msc)? You may need to look at the size of the drive to tell if it didn't assign a drive letter for it.

If yes, then please post back a screenshot of your Disk Management, and we'll be happpy to see what we can do to help.

Hi there. I'm having a little problem with XP and my storage hard drive.

I installed XP last night and it seems to be working good. Previously, I was using Win2000 and I had a storage drive with no OS installed. I moved a lot of backup files to it before I installed XP.

Now that XP is installed, I can go into My Computer or Windows Explorer and XP recognizes that I have a second drive and lists it as my D: but when I explore the drive, I can't see any files at all on it. If I check the drive properties, there is 28 gigs of used space, so something is still there, but I can't get to any of it.

I've tried everything I can think of, including reseating my IDE cable and turning all sharing on the drive on, but nothing works. Also, my brother and I have our computers networked and he can see my main drive fine, but he has the same problem as I do with the storage drive.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

And yes, i've tried re-installing the drivers (thanks lexar tech support for
that sage advice). Has anyone else had problems like this? It was work fine
before now and other than the PC crashing i can't think what could have hap
