security feature disallows applications from loading DLLs from their own directory

Q: security feature disallows applications from loading DLLs from their own directory

What security feature disallows applications from loading DLLs from their own directory?

I have two DLLs named ws2_32.dll and wsock32.dll. I also have an application that i want to utilize these two dlls rather then the ones in system32 but it apears that it doesn't. I ran a dependency scanner and found that in fact the application does load these two DLLs rather then the ones in system32 folder.

How i know its not working: the dlls are suppose to make a log file. It succeeded in making the log file on winXP but not Win7.
I found some one else having same problem but with vista but that could be fixed by doing the following:

'set the registry key "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\DevOverrideEnable" to 1" '

However, i can't find the DevOverrideEnable field in my win7 registry. so upon the suggestions of some friends i added the field in manually and set the value that didnt work either.

What i have tried:
On Admin account
Run as Admin
Set compatibility to xp
take ownership
turn off all security features that i could get my hands on

all of that and no luck please advise.

Thank you,
Astropirit

Preferred Solution: security feature disallows applications from loading DLLs from their own directory

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi

First off I'm not sure where this message should be posted so please forgive me if I place it in the wrong forum.

I'm hoping that someone may be able to help me with what seems to be rather curious problem.

Maybe rather foolishly, I found and enabled a Take Ownership item on the Windows Explorer context menu. I then took ownership of various directories it was probably better to leave alone. Now, and for some time, I've had a multiplicity (and I'm talking 11 and upwards) of iterations of the Applications Data directory located in the following directory structures:

ProgramData\ directory
Documents and Settings\All Users\ directory
Documents and Settings\Username\AppData\Local\ directory
Documents and Settings\Local Settings\ directory
Users\All Users\ directory
Users\Username\AppData\Local\ directory
Users\Username\Local Settings\ directory

A total of seven different directory structures on my Win7 drive - and each iteration appears to contain exactly the same data as the first Application Data directory in the structure, but its ONLY the Application Data directory which is affected.

I can't say this was a directory I took ownership of - I can't remember - but I guess I must have since I can access the files and folders within the top level directory. Does anyone have any idea what I can do about this - apart from re-installing Win7 that is?

I should add that I've checked this out using the search program Locate by searching on "Application Data". Also, ... Read more

"Documents and Settings" is not a real folder. It is a junction to allow older programs to interface with the folder structure of Windows 7. You are not really seeing duplicates of all those folders.
I would be careful with changing the security settings (ownership, etc.) of system files and folders.

How do I set up Win7 Pro 64 so that it will search inside this DVD, at least temporarily? Thanks!

I have found another thread back in 2008 that a guy had the exact same issue, but the case was closed b/c his log was transferred. Here is my issue...I am running Windows XP Pro with Service Pack 3 on a Dell XPS 630i. I recently had to re-install my OS b/c of the Windows updated BSOD and a bad root file caused me not to be able to recover...that was another issue and I just dealt with the fact that I had to re-install my OS. I have had the computer for about a year. When I first got the computer I installed 2 or 3 16-bit applications and they ran great. I never had an issue. This is the same factory OEM Windows XP Pro that came with the computer. It was service pack 2 out of the box. So the other day, I re-installed the OS (service pack 2) to take me back to my factory settings. I downloaded all the windows updates, which took me up to Service pack 3. Now I can?t run 16-bit applications. Does anyone know how or why I can?t run these applications? I really don?t care why, I guess if someone could help me get them to run, I would be greatly appreciative. MS had an article in their knowledge base about 16-bit programs causing errors in XP. It told you to basically replace or re-write the config.nt, autoexec.nt and command.com files. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/324767 I did this with no success. Nothing changed. Basically when I click on the setup.exe file of the 16-bit application, the machine starts to run by unpacking files to a local te... Read more

A:16 bit applications not loading on XP Pro SP 3

i have never run 16 bit programs before but it seems by the excellent description you typed that the subsystem in windows that runs the 16 bit programs may have a problem which could have happened when you reinstalled the operating system, now the only fix to this problem that i can think of would be to reinstall the 16 bit subsystem, and the only way to do that would be to reinstall windows. Also the problem could have been caused when you updated to sp3 or service pack 3, or microsoft might have dropped the 16 bit running environment all together. I'm sorry that i have no definite answer to this problem but i hope that the information above will help some.

I load everything on start up fine and fast in XP, but then I try and activate an application, the hourglass disappears and it looks like its going to load, and it never does. Constantly activating it about 7 or 8 times eventually gets it to load just once!

I've tried registry cleaning, and loads of other stuff, FAIL! Help please

A:XP not loading any applications at first?

When you first click the application ; if afterwards you do a ctrl+alt+del to open task manager and check running processes is it listed? When it opens if you do that do you see it listed several times.

Registry cleaning is a bad idea as it can often lead to problems like this. Registry cleaners work with databases, they begin with the one supplied with the application and add entries when they monitor an installation . If they detect an entry which is not in their database they call it an error and fix it by deleting it. If you have updates or patches which were installed on your system prior to your installing the registry cleaner but they were not tested and included in the database they can become corrupted by use of the registry cleaner. Often all you wind up with is various entries on a toolbar being greyed out, but occaisionally you wind up with applications being really messed up.

Have you been to the malware board? Often malware can cause similar problems if you are really infested.

Another thing to check is the process list in task manger. Is anything using an above average amount of system resources? If so what? Often jammed automatic updaters can cause a svchost entry to run at high priority and eat up cpu cycles thus slowing everything else.

HP Pavilion all-in-one computer with Win10.

Today, despite re booting several times, both Money Plus Deluxe and also Skype won't come up. Money gives the musical introduction with the "Money Plus Deluxe" opening screen and Skype goes to a box with three tabs, "Skype", "Tools" and "Help" options but in both cases the progress ring keeps turning and nothing can be accessed. Finally they give a "Not responding" message. Both were working fine yesterday.

As both have a seemingly identical problem which has occurred at the same time I sense something other than a software problem with the programs themselves. Any ideas please?

Post script to above, I have just uploaded some images to a Picturetrail album. The group upload facility failed to upload the images but the old single upload system uploaded all images without any problem. Also the music I have set up on the album doesn't play. Could it be that Flash Player or some other facility is the culprit? (If so it ain't Win10 and I'm in the wrong forum. )

As we known, MS Internet Explorer has a special feature called “AutoComplete”, it can remember certain details entered on web forms, such as username and password. Let’s talk about how to do this feature first.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Referring from: http://www.mediacollege.com
Title: How to Remember Names & Passwords in IE (AutoComplete)

Go to the Tools menu on IE and select Internet Options.

A window will open like the one below. Click the Content tab, then click the AutoComplete button.
In the AutoComplete Settings window, check (or uncheck) the options you would like to use.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Although this feature will help you saving a lot of time on surfing the Internet, here we talk about the security. Do you think it is security? At this time, I’ll say no, because some unauthorized users can also login any forms with these information you saved on your computer. So my opinion is that you should uncheck the AutoComplete feature or use some third-party tools, such as JJSoft IntelliLogin, IE Login, and Smart Login etc.

You can find these tools on:

Hi,

I have a laptop (HP Probook 4430s), with Windows 7 as the OS.
The problem I face now is lagging in some programs when I use them. For example :

a) When I use the putty(already sshed into the server), and then type commands the words get stuck/hang for a while before it continues to show the rest of what I type. Means its not smooth typing. It pauses while I am typing, then continues.
b) When I open Internet explorer, it does not open smoothly. It opens up halfway then hangs before showing the full screen.
c) IE takes a long time to load.
d) While scrolling down a pdf document, it also gets stuck halfway(pauses), then reaches the bottom of the page later from where we had scrolled earlier.

I had done a few things that could resolve this, but the issue still persists. Some of the things that I have done :
1) Run a disk cleanup
2) Run a disk defragmentation
3) Clean up the browsing history and allow it to last only 1 day
4) Updated the a/virus software

However these things still do not resolve the problem.

Furthermore, in task manager, the Performance Monitor shows high spikes for Disk and CPU usage. How do I reduce the spikes?

What else could be the problem, and how do are resolve them?

I was trying out EMET 5.5 for my line of business application. There are many executables including some that are pure .NET applications.
I created the rules using wildcards (basically match based on executable name only) and enabled them. EMET is not loading into some of these applications. First I tired it on a Windows 7 SP1 x64 machine. Then on a Windows 8.1 x64 machine. On each machine it
is a different set of applications that EMET fails to load in. (I used the "Export Selected" in Application Configuration section to export the configuration to import it into a different machine.)
Then I tried adding it from the window by selecting the running process. I restarted the process and still EMET was not loaded into it.
I also tried loading the configuration using the recommended configuration template. Still no luck.
1. Is there any logging that tells us why EMET failed to load into an executable? Am I missing something?
2. Also what is the performance penalty of EMET?
3. Does EMET do anything meaningful for .NET applications?

Hey there, this is my first post on these forums, so I do apologize if I make a mistake with formatting/etc. I am not super savvy with the BSOD/software end of the world, but I have narrowed down a few of my problems. My newest and most frustrating issue is a recurring BSOD that happens when I open/close certain programs. Often times when I am opening/closing Steam games, I get this BSOD. I know through searching, ntoskrnl.exe is often not to blame, but running bluescrenview yields that as the number one culprit.
Can someone please help identify the issue? I have attached my dump files, let me know if further information is needed.

Thank you in advance,
Jutty

why when i set the user password at BIOS it can't be erased or changed (it says "view only item")? what do i have to do to reset the password?

A:help me 'bout BIOS security feature

It very much depends on the motherboard you are using. The reset cmos jumper will erase it along with all other settings changes you may have made to the bios.

For better help we really need to know what motherboard, system, and bios you are using.

I am getting lock ups whilst loading multiple applications at once. Most often this occurs when first booting a game or internet site with video.

I have Windows 7 Professional x64 full retail version, on a fresh install ~1 month old. Computer hardware is ~2.5 years old.

Sorry but no DMP files upload try this method
If you wish to have others assist you with your computer's BSOD symptoms, upload the contents of your "\Windows\Minidump" folder. The procedure:

* Copy the contents of \Windows\Minidump to another (temporary) location somewhere on your machine.
* Zip up the copy.
* Attach the ZIP archive to your post using the "paperclip" (file attachments) button.
* Briefly describe the problem history and circumstances in the same post. Somebody will attend to your query as soon as possible.

Started about a month and a half ago, when my power supply died while the computer was on.

First, my computer specs:
Pentium 4 2.66 GhZ
768 mb RAM
Samsung 80gb hard drive
ATI x1300 video card
Edit: OS is Windows XP Pro
I believe it was 420w, and now I have a 350w supply. After that, I noticed that the computer was considerably slower. About 2 weeks ago, it started to freeze everytime I would load a big application (World of Warcraft, Counter-strike, games in general, Vegas editing, etc) or multiple applications at once (many firefox tabs open, AIM,etc.) The programs started freezing more and more frequently, up until today where I decided to reformat my computer. My computer now runs much smoother, but it will still freeze when loading big applications. I'm guessing the slow-down was due to some registry errors of sort, but whats the deal with the freezing? It's very frustrating.

A:Computer freezes whenever loading big or multiple applications..

Another thing to note :

Whenever it freezes, the computer seems to revert to 5 minutes or so before the freeze. For example, if I delete a file, and clean the recycling bin. When I reboot the comp after it froze the file might be back in the recycling bin.

As of a few days ago, all my MS Office applications are taking an inordinately long time to load.
After I press the icon of (say) a Word document, there is an approximate seven second delay before MS Word loads and then a further five to six second delay before the document itself loads into Word.
I had this exact same problem happen a few weeks ago and I eventually solved it by running "Advanced Windows Care V2 Personal". Unfortunately this has not helped me this time around.
It's almost as if there is something blocking or filtering the program before it runs.
I have a relatively fast computer and prior to this happening, Word documents usually loaded in about one to two seconds.
I have tried a repair re-install of MS Office without any improvement.
I run Windows XP SP2 with MS Office Student and Teacher Edition 2003.
My computer is AMD Athlon 64 Dual Core 3800+ with 2.0 GB RAM and GeCube Radeon X800XL Graphics card.
I would be very grateful for any suggestions. Thank You.

A:All my Office Applications Loading after a long delay.

*Blocking or filtering* may be the key. Do you have a virus checker that might be checking everything you try to load? I know that Norton AntiVirus is notorious for slowing Word down.

This question is similar to "no network access on 2nd nic" by drowe, buy since it is old, the post suggested asking in a new thread.
I have an HP W7 (Home Premium) PC.

I have a wired connection (on-systemboard network interface) to a Belkin 54g router, but the router is not physically connected to the internet (no ethernet cable out to a cable modem/whatever). The router connects several necessary peripherals - mostly wirelessly to the main PC and another W7 PC.) All this stuff worked prior to a move to a new location.

There is freely accessible Wifi in range (public library - wherein I could concievably carry the whole PC and use their WiFi with their blessing). << NOTE: My wife and I are members of the library. There is no requirement to be within the library when using their hotspot. I can provide a link to the terms and conditions, and acceptable use policy pages. This is not the thrust of this post. >>

I attached a USB Wifi adapter to the PC to avail myself of the free service, but W7 will not allow the Wifi adapter to be seen until I detach the ethernet wire. Then it will allow me to see the available network, and connect.

How does W7 (or the system board) look at network? Are they (onboard NIC and USB) mutually exclusive? Do I need a separate ethernet adapter card or a separate USB adapter card to create a different "channel" that would allow the two networks to coexist?

Thanks for your help.

A:W7 - Onboard NIC disallows USB Wifi adapter to work simultaneously?

Friends and Fellow Geeks,

Thank you for the responses and suggestions.

I find that struggling to frame a question that won't take you and me down long side paths and clarifications, actually helps order my thought processes in thinking about solving the problem. Other times, it reminds me of how much there is to know out there, and without good technical support (that's you folks!), I would be adrift at sea. Then someone smacks me on the head with an oar, and and says, Snap Out Of It!, and I proceed to the solution.

Ultimately, the solution for me included running an ethernet cable from the non-internet-connected router to the second PC, setting up static IP's for that network, killing the gateway and dns for them, and letting the wireless usb adapters do their thing for the wifi internet access.

The brain-fart had been that I was trying to force two networks on one adapter on the second PC - what was I thinking? Some times I need that smack upside the head.

Thanks again.

G00k

Executive Summary

Microsoft is aware of a security feature bypass vulnerability in Secure Channel (Schannel) that affects all supported releases of Microsoft Windows. Our investigation has verified that the vulnerability could allow an attacker to force the downgrading of the cipher suites used in an SSL/TLS connection on a Windows client system. The vulnerability facilitates exploitation of the publicly disclosed FREAK technique, which is an industry-wide issue that is not specific to Windows operating systems. When this security advisory was originally released, Microsoft had not received any information to indicate that this issue had been publicly used to attack customers.
We are actively working with partners in our Microsoft Active Protections Program (MAPP) to provide information that they can use to provide broader protections to customers.
Upon completion of this investigation, Microsoft will take the appropriate action to help protect customers. This may include providing a security update through our monthly release process or providing an out-of-cycle security update, depending on customer needs.

Mitigating Factors
A server needs to support RSA key exchange export ciphers for an attack to be successful.

Recommendation
Please see the Suggested Actions section of this advisory for workarounds to disable the RSA export ciphers. Microsoft recommends that customers use these workarounds to mitigate this vulnerability.

Nifty new feature that comes with Win 10 1903

How to Enable the Windows 10 Tamper Protection Security Feature

https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tu...indows-10-tamper-protection-security-feature/

With the release of the Windows 10 May 2019 Update, Microsoft introduced a new security feature called Tamper Protection that protects security settings for Windows Defender antivirus from being disabled by malware or third-party programs.

When enabled, Tamper Protection will only allow Windows Defender related settings to be changed when done through the Windows Security settings screen. If a program, such as malware, or even PowerShell tries to change security settings or Microsoft Defender preferences, Tamper Protection will block the settings from being modified.

Due to this, Tamper Protection is an integral part of the Windows 10 security environment and should be enabled by all users for increased security and protection from malicious programs. Click to expand...

Directions follow in the article on how to enable.

edit: I just checked mine and found it was already enabled.

I have been getting help from OBP and jimr381 during the past few months to build a database for my workplace - on MY computer in my office.

I recently added the security feature on it, and am completely satisfied with it, however now this morning I burned it on a CD and tried to use it on the secretary's computer and it is looking for the exact file path it used on my computer to access its security file and related information. also, the secretary's computer is windows vista and mine is just good old XP.

What do I do? How would I disable the security feature in order to re set it up on the appropritate computer?

Actually, I have 2 questions.

1. I am looking for information on bios settings for the Soyo P4-X400Ultra motherboard. The information can come in the form of an email or the web address of a place that tells me about bios settings for my board. I am not that experienced with the bios settings and the manual does not elibrate on which settings are best. What I would like to know is what are the best settings for my system (shown below)?

2. My second question is actually a problem that I can't seem to figure out. My system has been running well since I built it in Sept. but I have started to notice that applications are taking longer to load. I am not sure if this has been a problem from the beginning since I upgraded from a 800 Mhz and the new system being so much faster just never noticed. I can hit the shortcut to begin an application and it will begin by coming up in chunks...meaning that it loads pieces of the application over several seconds. For instance, the background shows up, then the menu, then the scroll bar, etc.

I have tried defragging, scan disk, Norton SpeedDisk all in an effort to make the HD access faster. One thing that I did notice however is that the S.M.A.R.T. parameter will not stay enabled in the bios. I can set it and when I reboot, it will revert back to disabled. Not sure if this has anything to do with the problem or not.

I would appreciate any and all responses.

Hello,

Allow me to introduce myself since this is my first post. My name is Sara. I have Windows XP, NOD ESET (Version 4458) and I run SpyBot Search and Destroy the latest version. Yesterday, I scanned my computer with SpyBot and it found the following viruses: Refpron, RightMedia, and Win32.agent.att...SpyBot removed the viruses and I've scanned several times since then and it's only coming up with RightMedia which is says is a tracking cookie. The problem is my computer is still not back to normal. Right now, I cannot download MalwareBytes, since everytime I try to download something from the internet, I get the pop-up message "Your security settings do not allow this file to be downloaded". I've gone several times to Tools/Internet Options/Security/Custom Level (Which is set at Medium High (Default) and enabled "Downloads - Automatic Prompting for file downloads" but it keeps setting itself back to Disable. Also, I cannot click links anymore from email or certain websites like facebook. It literally does nothing and I have to copy and paste the link into a new browser. I'm not sure if there's some old traces of the virus left behind but I'm unable to scan with new virus scanners since my ability to download the scanners is disabled. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Sara

A:Mysterious Virus Disallows downloading of software and disables links

Hi Sara, I have another idea,in case it isn't malware causing this.Open Internet ExplorerClick on Tools >> Internet Optionsclick on the Security tab then the Custom Level buttonScroll down till you get to Downloads Find.. Automatic prompting for downloads tick EnableClick OK and close out.If that works run MBAM(Malwarebytes) and post that log. YOu may as well run thes too.Next run ATF and SAS:Note.. SAS doesn't open the registry hives for other user accounts on the system, so scans should be done from each user account.Note: On Vista, "Windows Temp" is disabled. To empty "Windows Temp" ATF-Cleaner must be "Run as an Administrator".From your regular user account..Download Attribune's ATF Cleaner and then SUPERAntiSpyware , Free Home Version. Save both to desktop ..DO NOT run yet.Open SUPER from icon and install and Update itUnder Scanner Options make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):Close browsers before scanning.Scan for tracking cookies.Terminate memory threats before quarantining.Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen and exit the program. DO NOT run yet.Now reboot into Safe Mode: How to enter safe mode(XP)Using the F8 MethodRestart your computer. Hello everyone. I just got a new laptop running Vista Home Premium x64, and it's my first experience with both Vista and an x64 OS.

I've changed the security settings in IE7 to a custom level, and now I get the notification bar saying "Your current security settings put your computer at risk. etc." I know this can be disabled via gpedit.mcs but of course Vista Home doesn't include that feature. So, a couple questions.

Nobody here seems to know much about getting GPedit to work in Vista Home, so I won't even touch that. However, I did see mention of the Microsoft speadsheet that lists all the various group policy settings and their corresponding registry entries. I found the "Disable Security Settings Check Feature" entry, but now I'm not sure what to do with it.

HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Security!DisableSecuritySettingsCheck
HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Security!DisableSecuritySettingsCheck

I can navigate to the Microsoft folder in regedit, but that's where the trail ends. Do I need to create a key or something? I don't have much experience with the registry, and I really want this notification bar gone. Help please?

cheers everyone!

A:Disable Security Settings Check Feature && GPEdit

Hello mousetopher. You probably allowed something in the security settings that you should have just set to prompt. Scripts, Activex, something that will tolerate nothing beyond prompt. Allowing anything unsigned more permissions then prompt will set off that warning. Reset them to default and then your security warnings should disappear.

Hope it helped. If not I probably read it wrong.
