Unable to open Microsoft sites / Win Update / Zune / Media Player updates

Q: Unable to open Microsoft sites / Win Update / Zune / Media Player updates

My laptop has suddenly decided that it doesn't want to open anything Microsoft related, so I cannot update Zune, Windows, Media Player etc. I also cannot view McAfee, Panda, AVG and most of the sites where I think I may have got help from.

I have attached a Hijack This report if it helps at all. I changed the MTU to 1492 which was apparently the right one to use, but it made no difference.

I have WinXP and currently have no additional security software (I unistalled McAfee as a first course of action).

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Windows Media Player sounds somewhat distorted but when I play music in the Zune player, it sounds fine. Why would that be? This would be on a new Dell Inspriron 530 desktop bought in June 08 with Windows XP Pro. Thanks so much.

Hi ,
I have made carefull screening of my PC as instructed.
B'fore I post the logs and the attachments here 's the problem i 'm facing.

I 'm unable to open any anti virus website or any live scanning links(from microsoft n not even able to get into safe mode).
I recently purchased Trend Micro (2008) and it's not letting me subscribe or do online updates(says ,u don't have internet connection, while my connectivity is absolutley fine) .I tried with other AVs(Avira) but to no avail.

so, it clearly indicates there's some virus /malware inside my PC.
The system was formatted prior to installing the Anti virus.
Moreover, I have already run the anti malware and CC cleaner.
I will greatly appreciate any quick help in this regards as i am in the middle of an imp work and will be leaving this place in another 12 hours.

Thanks a lot in advance!

here's the dds log..

Two days ago I watched a two hour DVD on my computer, which uses Windows 10. The DVD player -"Transcend" - is brand new. Then as of yesterday, no matter what DVD disc I insert, I receive this message:
"Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL ''dvd:///C:/Program%20Files%20%28x86%29/VideoLAN/VLC/''. Check the log for details." I have looked at a number of tutorials on line, but none have worked. I've also tried another - DVD app - 5KPlayer - without success. Please help!

Hopefully someone will please answer my dilemma. I am unable to sync my Media Player music with Zune (protected error). This is outlandish!!! Is there something I might do aside from a hope to be able to return this Zune.

A:Zune with Media Player

I have found the answer myself. When burning cd's to Windows Media the Copy Protect must be unclicked; since I did not understand what this actually meant nor did I know this might prevent using my library of music with ANOTHER Microsoft product I have been forced to RE-BURN my music. In doing so, Zune sync's and works fine. Thanks Tech Support Guy but I found the answer without you.

Last July i bought a microsoft zune mp3 player for my birthday. I installed in on a crappy lowgrade Toshiba Tecra Laptop (my primary computer) running xp pressional. Installed without a hitch and worked great. In october the hard drive crashed and burned (literaly, i was using the computer when it happened) so i was using the house pc until i bought a new one on 1/09/08. I am using this one currently. Its an exellent computer that can run anything (dell insprion 531) BUT it cant run anything because of Vista. Vista is the one and ONLY problem that i have with compatibility.

My Microsoft Zune player will not work on vista unless i download the patch that they made. That is where the problem is. My vista is the Basic home edition 32 bit and the patch is made for the Vista Premium 64 bit. WTH, The company makes the VISTA and the ZUNE! Is there a patch for the 32 bit or do i have to upgrade my OS or prefereably downgrade to XP home edition or wait a few months and buy an mp3 player that will work on vista? The house computer (running windows XP home) is off limits to my ZUNE so that option is out of the question. I dont want to buy a new anything. I just want my MP3 player to work. Right when I loaded the disk in the computer it said not compatible with operating system and thats how i found out about the patch. I hope that i didnt waste $300 one something not even a yr old. So is there some other way around my problem?

I'm unable to open media player 9 from the desktop shortcut by left clicking. When i attempt to open by right clicking i get a new window that says only "g" with "ok" & "cancel" buttons, like a typical installation. When "ok" is clicked i get an install prompt that says windows must be restarted to complete the installation.

When i'm playing a media clip from a web site that requires media player, it seems to work ok.

I'm guessing a virus has attached itself to the media player shortcut. A full scan by Norton 2003 detected no virus, & scanning by "Spybot" anti spyware was also no help.

The anti virus & windows updates are both up to date.

Any advice would be appreciated.

What version of Media Center Edition do you have? MCE2002, 2004, or 2005?

If you are unsure, open up MediaCenter and go to Settings/General/About Media Center/Software Version and this will tell you the version of Media Center that you are running. You can't tell from the properties in "my computer" (that shows the version of XP, not the version of Media Center).

When attempting to open a media file, I receive the following:

"Windows Media Player is not installed properly and must be reinstalled. Do you want to install the player from the microsoft website?"

followed by another message stating:

"Filename-Server execution failed."

However, if I locate the windows media player folder, I can open the program directly from there without any problem whatsoever. I am also able to load media without a problem.

I have tried the following:

-Uninstalling and reinstalling wmp via the windows features
-using sfc scan
-Using the Cmd Prompt to enter the following:
unregmp2.exe /UpdateWMPVersion

None of the above have helped.

OS=Windows 7 64 Bit Version.

A:Unable to open Windows Media Player

go to the windows media player folder and create a shortcut to the .exe and place it on the desktop.

Other than that: I have no clue...

EDIT: I have an idea: Go to a media file and right click it and select "open with" then select "browse" and then go find the WMP .exe

OS=Windows 7 64 Bit Version.

A:Unable to open Windows Media Player

Delete whatever shortcuts you are using to access WMP.

Go to the folder where you have no problems opening the program. Right click the file and choose Create Shortcut. Drag that shortcut to wherever you want (desktop, quick launch). Try opening again using that shortcut.

Each and every time I try to open my Zune media player, I receive this message:
Microsoft Zune has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

I've reinstalled the Zune program several times but I still receive this message every time I attempt to open it.
please help...

A:Cannot open Zune player.

Jea007, what other media player programs do you have running? OR, are they just idle waiting to run. Also, what service pack do you have with xp (sp1a,sp2,sp3)? This will help alot.

I used to use WMP a lot because I like how it automatically organized my music then I started using Zune to play music but not organize and now I want to use the Windows 8 Music app and am running into some problems.

I have a subscription to Xbox Music and apparently it looked at my playlist and music on my desktop and sent them to my Xbox Music so it can stream the songs from Microsofts server to my laptop and Xbox which I like. The problem is it is redownloading all the MP3's I have as DRM protected WMA files of a lower bit rate often and then the DRM doesn't update and I can't play the songs even though the mp3's are perfectly fine.

1. How can I get it to stop downloading the drm protected wma files of mp3's on my desktop and have the Music App play the mp3's instead?

2. Can someone clear up how the system picks up my mp3's and adds them to a list that I can stream to my Xbox Music devices? Does it only pickup play list or all of my music>

3. Is it possible to have mixed play list with mp3's and wma

4. I am also getting an error eveytime it tries to play a drm protected wma claiming I am logged in somewhere else which I'm not so the Xbox Music server is completely useless on my desktop.

A:Music App, Zune, Windows Media Player

maybe you can see if this document helps you out:

I want to stream music from my PC to my xbox 360 so I did what my xbox 360 told me to and went to http://www.xbox.com/en-US/pcsetup and followed the directions downloading zune. After I downloaded it the Zune media player acts like my computer has no connection with the classic "page cannot be displayed" and "your computer is not connected" messages. I've made sure that it was on windows firewall's exception list and it was. Also I added several other zune applications to the exception list. I'm positive I have a connection as I can use internet explorer. How might I fix this and what may be the problem?

A:Zune media player giving me trouble

Ok, problem fixed, I had to uninstall zune and all media player related things in add-remove program. I also uninstalled windows media connect. I then installed Windows Media Player 11 which comes with a built in windows media connect. Then I had to download and install a driver for my multimedia audio controller to get the sound working again (possibly because I uninstalled a codec pack). I went to library (in Windows Media Player 11) and clicked media sharing and didn't see my Xbox 360 so I when to advanced settings and checked automaticaly allow new devices (or something similar) and went to my Xbox 360 and attempted to connect. I was so happy when It found my computer. I went back to my computer and my xbox 360 was on the list and allowed.
Also I followed these steps but I don't know if it is what made it work or not:
1. At a command prompt, run: "regsvr32 %windir%system32rsaenh.dll"
2. Reboot
3. Attempt to connect to Xbox 360

Hi all,

When I'm using google and click on the search results, I don't go to that web site, but instead am sent to another search engine. When I hit the back button and hit the link again, I go somewhere else. It takes about three tries to get to where I want to go. My second issue is that I'm unable to watch any youtube videos or videos that require a flash player. I had no problem maybe a month or so ago. Anyway, I go to the adobe site and download the latest player only to go to youtube and it tells me to go and download the flash player again. Very annoying. I'm thankful for this site and any help with this. My anti-virus software (CA) picks nothing up, nor does spybot. I've done the steps so here's the paste and hopefully the attachments work.

Windows Update Error
Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot display the requested page.

Select from any of the following pages for information about Windows Update services, or send us your feedback.

Windows Update Home Page
About Windows Update
Support Information

You can also get online support if you are having problems with Windows Update.
Send error number to Microsoft (0x800C0005)
Note This sends error information but does not create a support incident; you may or may not receive a response.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. I run Win98.

Thank you

Hi, this is a good site for the windows update error

Both problems can be the result of a broken firewall, if you have one, you could try reinstalling.

Hi there guys & gals,

I am slightly at my wits end - I'd like to think I'm not a complete computer dunce, but this one is defeating me and I just can't seem to shift it!

The problem began with my browser being diverted when I clicked a link on Google. I realised that something was wrong, and ran malbytesware, which told me my laptop was infected with trojan.agent.H. I asked it to remove it, and then restarted the system when it was complete, and ran a full scan again. From 4 infected files, it now told me I had several hundred. Goody. As I've just shifted ISP to British Telecom, who provide free McAfee, it seemed like a good idea to download this, and while I could sign up for it, I could not access the website when I wanted to download it. I then searched for other antivirus sites, and discovered that I could not access any of them, or even fora such as this which provide antivirus advice. So, I am now reduced to using my netbook, which for a big bloke with fat fingers is rather inconvenient, not least as I use my main computer for work purposes, and it has the software I need for work on it!

Anyway, the log files are attached below, and your help would be most gratefully received! Thanks in advance! Mark

Hi,

Yesterday I suddenly found malware erupting on my system. I searched for help on the internet and managed to access a cached (as most help pages were blocked) page that described the problems I had as the result of a malware called 'User Protection'. I followed the instructions for getting rid of it (using TDSSKiller and MalwareBytes Anti-malware (MBAM)) which solved most of my problems such as my inability to use task manager and most of the fake anti-spyware pop-ups.

However, later my sound system stopped working, apparently the drivers were missing. In the device manager there is an error-message next to 'Sigmatel High definition audio codec' but the driver resource CD will not repair it and any attempts to uninstall result in the device manager ceasing to respond. In my attempts to resolve this issue I discovered that I was still unable to access most microsoft sites and many search results were still redirected. The system restore function has also ceased to work; the shortcut in the start menu does not refer to anything.

I have tried restarting the system many times after further scans with the malwarebytes software, and every time it finds plenty of malware, but the problems do not seem to disappear.

I still get anti-spyware pop-ups, but I am not sure if they are fake or legitimate messages from AVG (my anti-spyware program).

I also have found a bunch of iTunes and iPod related software that I'm sure was not there vefore, any attempt t... Read more

Now it seems I am down to the following issues:

I am unable to load the Microsoft Update website
When I run a search in Google, the result links I click often redirect to an ad site
After my computer has been on for a while, I receive a "Generic Host Process for Win32 Services" crash message, which is soon followed by a loss of internet connection

Hi

I am new to this forum. I am having a major issues with my pc. First its all started when the malware paytime.exe attacked my pc. It turned off my firewall(SP2 Firewall), real-time virus scanner(Trend microoffice client, not using its firewall, provided by my service provider). With the help of hijackthis, spybot and ewido and also the interent , able to delete paytime.exe and its related files.
To this I entered in safe mode.

Now I am able to control my firewall. Thats the only success BUT when I click nvmixer.exe in my taskbar, it shows visual C++ runtime error and my virus scanner is saying that officescan client has not started. So in control panel I entered in administrative tools and tried manually to start real time scan process but I failed again. It shows cannot start this process in safe mode. The same thing is repeated for other processes like error reporting etc. I am booting in normal mode only but its showing cant run in safe mode.

For runtime error I tried to download visual runtime files from support.microsoft, I failed to do so. My browser doesnt open sites of microsoft. When I typed support.microsoft.com, Page cannot display error is coming. I even disabled my firewall still it doesnt works.

Could you tell me how to make my process start again? And is there any program that will tell me about missing dlls if any(presently there are no dialogs of missing dlls). And about my browser security settings?

I also present you the log of the hijackthis.

Sometimes when viruses are cleaned out the process damages system files etc too. I'd suggest starting with a sfc and then if no go run a 'repair' (this installs os over itself and retains data but you'll have to re-do updates).

Please don't run Combofix on your own.

Why we don't ask you to run ComboFix from the onset

As stated by the author of ComboFix:

ComboFix is a very powerful tool which when improperly used may render your machine to a doorstop.

We first need to verify if there's any rootkits present and how they could affect our tools. DDS & GMER are preliminary scans. We use their logs to map our strategy for attack.

With these logs we can determine the infections present & decide whether to deploy ComboFix.

We want all our members to perform the steps outlined in the link given below, before posting for assistance. There's a sticky at the top of this forum, and a

Welcome, are you able to run these. Try safe mode with networking or copy them to a flash drive from another computer and run off that if they will not download normally.

Please download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop and run it.
Checkmark the following checkboxes:
Flush DNSReport IE Proxy SettingsReset IE Proxy SettingsReport FF Proxy SettingsReset FF Proxy SettingsList content of HostsList IP configurationList Winsock EntriesList last 10 Event Viewer logList Installed ProgramsList Users, Partitions and Memory size.
Click Go and post the result (Result.txt). A copy of Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.
Note: When using "Reset FF Proxy Settings" option Firefox should be closed.

>>>>>>>>>>>>
In some cases running RKill first will allow you to do things normally...

Please download Rkill by Grinler and save it to your desktop.
Link 1Link 2
Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.If using Vista, right-click on it and Run As Administrator.A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully. If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.If it does not work, repeat the process and attempt to use one of the remaining links until the tool runs.If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.
Do not reboot the computer, you will need to run the application again.[/list]

Previous issue

I have found a new flaw on this issue. It turns out that if IE is NOT the default browser, the option to move from Windows only to MS Updates will be missing! I guess this is part of the improved customer experience. This is after the site is added in compatibility
mode.
We were unable to get Office updated with Chrome as the default brower. Even using IE and pasting in the Windows update link directly in, the option to use MS Update is hidden. For what possible purpose?
Simply by setting IE as the default and using the EXACT SAME LINK, the option is now present. Wow! Really?
Really?
Really?
I hope this saves someone some time as it wasted about two hours today.

Hi everyone!

When I find a media file (video file, for example) and double click it, the Media Player doesn't start at all...

I tried to re-associate the Windows Media Player to it's default media extensions through "Default Programs" , and it doesn't work...

All media files play normally on other players. I have to state that sometimes I get the message: "The file.... The parameter is incorrect".

Any help would be greatly appreciated. God bless guys! Take care!

What are the filetypes for those Video files? Maybe it's a Codec problem.

You may need to re-install your sound driver.
Look in Device Manager to see if it's missing.

I have some videos that I play from a usb stick. When I play them, Online Armor shows wmplayer tcp connections to what I assume is a website in the country that they originated from. There is also an "FFDShow" icon that comes up on the toolbar. I recognize that from the codec pack that I downloaded from CNET. THis only happens with a handful of videos. There are no browsers connected to the internet when this happens. If I click to terminate the process, the video stops and I have to restart it. When I click to close the connection the media player continues to play and the connections to the suspect destinations stop. This happens with the same videos every time I play them unless I disconnect my internet service.

I have recently run combofix with the help of an expert. SAS and MBAM come up clean.

What does this seemingly odd behavior mean?

A:Media Player Connecting to Unfamiliar Web Sites

The following piece from wikipedia explains why I might have experienced this seemingly unusual or unnoticed connection event.
Digital rights management (DRM) is a generic term for access control technologies that can be used by hardware manufacturers, publishers, copyright holders and individuals to try to impose limitations on the usage of digital content and devices. It is also, sometimes, disparagingly described as Digital Restrictions Management. The term is used to describe any technology which inhibits uses (legitimate or otherwise) of digital content that were not desired or foreseen by the content provider. The term generally doesn't refer to other forms of copy protection which can be circumvented without modifying the file or device, such as serial numbers or keyfiles. It can also refer to restrictions associated with specific instances of digital works or devices. Digital rights management is being used by companies such as Sony, Apple Inc., Microsoft, AOL and the BBC.
The use of digital rights management is controversial. Proponents argue it is needed by copyright holders to prevent unauthorized duplication of their work, either to maintain artistic integrity[1] or to ensure continued revenue streams.[2] Some opponents, such as the Free Software Foundation, maintain that the use of the word "rights" is misleading and suggest that people instead use the term digital restrictions management. Their position is essentially that copyright holders are r... Read more

when I click to open media player nothing happens....when I try to open a media file with media player nothing happens. I was thinking I should uninstall and reinstall media player but its not on my uninstall programs list.....how do get media player working? this only happens under the administrators sign on.

A:my media files are not listed and media player wot open

well if its not on you uninstall list it would seem as if you dont even have it as a program on your computer. You should just try to reinstall it from the website and if any traces of the original player exist still it might uninstall them for you.

Hi,

I recently reformatted my PC and now have Internet Explorer 7 and Service Pack 2 but since then I've been unable to access any Microsoft update sites or downloads, when I attempt to I get the usual "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" notifaction. I've also just noticed that I now can't access any anti-virus software sites such as Symantec, McAfee, Malwarebytes etc. The rest of the internet seems to be working and loading up fine however, it's just these vital updates which I can't access. Some other examples are my newly-installed Microsoft Word which I can't connect to the Microsoft Authorisation service to activate it and Windows Media Player which won't search for updates.

I currently have Spybot Search and Destroy and Malwarebytes, though the problem above seems to be preventing Malwarebytes from searching for updates. Also, Spybot Search and Destroy keeps picking up the following line:

Microsoft.WindowsSecurityCenter_disabled

However, even when I remove this and reboot it keeps on returning. Below is a HJT log. Hope someone will be able to help me with this.

Many thanks.

A:Microsoft Sites/Updates and Google Redirects Problem

Ive never had problems before in the past removing viruses and malware. One scan with malwarebytes and everything was ok. But a few days ago I had another attack on my computer and scanned with malwarebytes and selected to remove all. After doing so, I still had the google redirect, as well as not being able to download any updates from microsoft, couldnt download internet explorer 8 and could not download windows live messanger. However I am able to visit any other sites and download any other programs. I tried reinstalling windows xp by doing a full format installation but the problem still persists. But now, when i try installing my audio driver (realtekhd) it always keeps asking me to insert the cd when before it never did. It would always just install fine after getting the driver straight from the gateway website. I would really appreciate somebodies help...
