Computer has lost my activation details.

Q: Computer has lost my activation details.

Hi there, i have been attepting to fix a corrupted registry from a frends omputer. I have been following the steps form this guide

How to recover from a corrupted registry that prevents Windows XP from starting

How to recover from a corrupted registry that prevents Windows XP from starting

When i got to part 2, the computer was now logging on, obviously it was not fixed though. However windows needed re activating (i was not aware that it would). The owner of the computer was unable to find her windows key, however the computer informed us that we had 30days to activate, which was fine as it gave us time to find the key.

that was 2 weeks ago. I then had the chance to finish the process today. I complete steps 2 and 3 of the guide, with the final part being "run a system restore"

However when i completed part 3 and restarted the computer, i have been faced with ""your copy of windows must be activated with microsoft before you can log on" do you want to activate windows now? "

I now cannot log onto the computer(up untill now it has logged on no problem with "you have x,y,z days remaining to activate"), cannot connect to the internet to activate and do not have a key to phone microsoft with.

Where should i go form here? If i phone microsoft will they be aware of the computers previous activation? Will i be able to activate over the phone without a key? Can i find the key on my computer in any way? (although i doubt this as i cannot log on)

On thing to note was that when i started steps 2 and 3 today, there was still 14-17 days or so left to activate. Why have these dissapeared?

Sorry for the long winded post, please ask for any information you need, although detailed system information may be hard to find as i cannot log on to run a dxdiag.

EDIT: Ok, i clicked on "telephone customer service" and although there is no
number listed to call, there is a product key listed here. It is a string of numbers: aaaaa-bbbbbb-cccccc-dddddd-eeeeee-ffffff

Would this be all i require to activate the product? If so which number should i use?

Preferred Solution: Computer has lost my activation details.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I don't know if this qualifies as a "Technical Problem", but if anyone can help me I would be grateful!
I had a system crash a few weeks ago, but fortunately I have a regular backup routine using Acronis, and so regained the vast proportion of my files and folders.
However, I lost a website that I enjoyed using, but don't remember its name, and so cannot resurrect it.
Basically, it is a website which gives dozens of video clips sent in, on a vast number of subjects, (music, sport, comedy, etc.) and is listed by months and years. So I was able to view clips for any month this year, and for several years past.
As I say, I cannot for the life of me remember the website name, etc., and have spent quite a lot of time using search engines, without success.
If any of the above rings a bell with anyone I would be most grateful to hear from them!
Many thanks.

For those of you out there who cannot get regedit & the system configuration utility to work (so you can figure out why you are having problems with your network dialer), I'll try to detail what I've gone through in the last couple of days. We run Win 98 on the computer this happened to.

Apparently my son picked up a virus/worm/whatever on his computer in the last week or so. He visits Kazaa frequently, so that may be where it started. He started to notice the trouble when he got some kind of error message about his internet connection settings (he doesn't remember specifically), then he would get kicked off the internet, and had trouble reconnecting. When he was connected, it seems like not many bytes would be transmitted/received. All this is a little fuzzy in his recollection.

Here's where I come in--he had tried to fix the problem and had inadvertently deleted his modem drivers. I reinstalled the drivers and still had problems with getting a connection to our ISP. In randomly trying things, I came to realize that regedit was not working--and for that matter, neither was the system configuration utility. I did a systems file check and found that these files were suspected of being corrupt:
msinfo32.exe, winhlp32.exe, notepad.exe, control.exe,
scanregw.exe, user.exe, hpsysdrv.exe, and systray.exe.

I ended up doing a system recovery, but not reformatting the hard drive. I had some suspicion that this was a virus, because the very tools you'd... Read more

I recently lost over 500 episode of anime (about 100 gbs of info on my External Hard Drive). My DivX player (like Real Player) wasn't working so I downloaded it again and reinstalled it in the same place. It asked "Would you like to save over repeating files?" or something along those lines and i clicked "Yes to All". Somehow it deleted all of my anime episodes in the folders and now i really need help. Would anyone happen to know a software that is free i can use to get it all back, i am really pissed and i cant find anything without paying from 40$ and up... I need to find a free recovery program that will recover up to 100gb of info. Please help!

Oh yeah and if anyone knows any alternate ways to fix this please tell me that as well.

Hi guys,

I upgraded to windows 8 from windows 7, so not a clean install. I recently refreshed windows 8, and now it asks me for a product key. Unfortunately, I don't have any physical product key for it, and if I got an email, I don't think it exists any more. I tried the Belarc Advisor tool, but the product key it gave me doesn't work. I get frequent pop ups asking for the key at inconvenient times, so I'm hoping there's some other way I can recover the key.

Some months ago I upgraded my Window 8.1 partition (C: Drive) to Windows 10 after receiving the option for a free upgrade from Microsoft. I had no problems with Windows 8.1 (activated) which was installed from a genuine Microsoft DVD but I hated the tablet style of menu system. WIndows 10 worked fine (activated) for several months but recently I have started to get a message in the bottom right-hand corner of the desktop stating: "Activate Windows, Go to Setting to activate Windows". I tried doing so but got an error message (see attachment). I found the full key using Belarc Advisor and tried entering that key but got the same result.

The only other problem that might be relevant is that I cannot install KB3105213 (see attachment) and wonder if this has caused the problem. Help please. Ken

On my new XP/Pro system, if I enter ...

All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Activate Windows

.... it tells me that Windows is already activated. Great!!

I've just reloaded XP/Home in my old system, and there is no apparent way to activate the operating system. The "Activate Windows" item just isn't on the System Tools menu. All the Microsoft help and KB articles seem to assume that it would be there.

Now, somewhere up there in MS Land someone must like me, because I've just downloaded and applied over 90 patches to the basic Windows XP/SP2 OS ... and not once did it ask me about activation.

I'm going to give this computer to a computer novice in the next week or two. And she will not know what to do if she is asked about "activation."

Opps ... I'm the one that is lost! Just found out that using the Run command I can enter "oobe/msoobe /a" and it bring up the Activation window.

The strange thing is that it says the system is activated. I KNOW I didn't activate it, so that remains a mystery, but apparently it is no problem that requires solving.

I've been fooling around with computer all my life and at times they are a total mystery to me. Oh well ....

Got a problem with two programs, Revo Uninstaller & RegAce, randomly losing their activation. This has been an ongoing problem for several months. I first thought it was my maintenance/cleanup programs but after extensive testing, those are not the issue as I cannot forcibly recreate the issue. Thought it might be Windows updates but again, I cannot recreate the issue by restoring a clean image and manually installing/restarting computer on each update (in same order they were automatically installed) that are installed about the same time as the issue occurs.

I have ran out of ideas of what to look for. Any suggestions?

A:Program activation lost

Hi Ron,

After about what period of time do the programs start to lose their activation status? This does sound like a registry problem (many programs store activation/registration details in the registry, albeit in encrypted form and sometimes in seemingly irrelevant locations). I note that one of the programs you mentioned is RegAce, which I assume is a register cleaner. Many of us here, myself included, don't recommend the use of this type of program at all, as the potential to cause far more problems than they solve is high. Even with a well-known program such as CCleaner, we advise against the registry cleaning function.

My Computer came pre-installed with Windows 7 and when Windows 8 Pro was launched I had bought it initially and also got the Media Center key as free offer. I upgraded to Windows 8 Pro but never used and activated Windows Media Center. Recently I upgraded to Windows 8.1 Pro and by bad that I used the media center key to add features. later I realised that the key was expired after Feb 2013. Now the Windows activation is lost everytime I restarts it asks me to Activate. the old key is replaced with the Media Center key and as it is expired it asks to activate. I tried to follow the steps to remove Media Center but I guess it applies for Windows 8 Pro because when i try the steps, it never give me option to keep files, settings and apps only gives the option to keep nothing. Any help, I dont need Media Center, I just want to go back to Windows 8.1 Pro, I want to keep my files, settings and apps.

Thanks, please advice.

Hey i would just bite the bullet and buy new mediacenter pack key from Microsoft, at least here in finland it is just 9,99? so compared to that extra work what installing all your apps and backing up your data 9,99? isn't that bad deal.

Other thing that you could try is to call to Microsoft helpline and ask that if they could re-activate your media center key, but I bet that just by calling to their helpline and telling all this would cost almost the same amount of money so...

It would be more easy to you just to go and buy new media center pack key than explaining to Microsoft that why didn't you activate your previous key before that deadline.

Hi, i hope there is a solution to my problem. After upgrading from 8.1 to win 10 home on my Alienware X51 r2 i needed drivers from the alienware website. I downloaded the appropriate software to detect the drivers i required. I downloaded all that i was advised to. One of the updates was for the BIOS, and along with the others drivers i updated it. After the updates installed all was well until certain aspects of win 10 were failing to open upon request ie photos, calendar, mail etc. So as it was a relatively new installation i did a system restore back to just after installation, all was ok but it appears i restored back to before win 10 had activated via the internet. Now the only COA code i can find is probably a generic one that is blocked from activating by Microsoft. I have used the script from this forum to acertain this. I seem to have wiped the code from the BIOS, is there anything legal to get me my activated status back.

Thanks in advance

There are ways to find the product key of the first installation, and there are ways to reinstall XP with actually re-activating (provided it was properly activated once before), but both of those techniques require forethought and planning, and it is too late now.

Just curious, how did you get this far without a product key? You must have entered a product key towards the end of the installation? Where did that key come from?

Hi everyone,

I had activated my copy of windows 7 two days ago by simply entering the key I received for the copy I bought.

Everything was alright until I had to do a system restore to a restore point 4 days ago today.

Now my windows thinks its not validated anymore. However, I no longer have the option of entering the CD key in the system options where I should usually be able to. It is like my system reverted the fact that I activated my copy, but not the fact that it didn't need activation anymore (so that the option is not there anymore, but its also not activated...)

How can I fix this?

I have had a problem on one of my PC's.

I downloaded the Windows 8.1 Pro ISO from the Microsoft site, did a clean install with the install key found on this forum, I then activated it with my Windows 8 key, so far so good. Next I added the Media Centre using the key I got FOC when Windows 8 was initially launched, restarted the Computer only to be told that I needed to activate Windows, basically I lost the activation of my Windows 8.1.

I thought, maybe I had done something wrong. so I undertook all of the above a second time, a fresh install of Windows 8.1, which I activated, then added the Media and unfortunately I have had the same message, I need to activate windows.

I am now looking at undertaking yet another fresh install, unless I can find a walk around the activation issue.

ANY HELP would be appreciated.

Hi, this is my first post, and I'm so relieved to be here, where somebody might be able to help before I absolutely lose it. I've been googling this all day long, phrasing it every way I could think of, but none of the suggestions I saw given to other people worked for me.
I am usually very careful, but although I hate to admit it, I think I've learned just enough about the inner workings of my PC to become dangerous. I hope I am not responsible for this foul up.

I have had my Windows XP Home Edition for 9 months and have had very few problems. However, after trying to get QuickTime to play a video, (unsuccessfully) and enabling everything on it that related to video, I recieved a stream of messages on my desktop telling me that I had only 3 days to activate my Windows, since "substantial changes have been made to your hardware." So I did, over the phone, with an excruciatingly patient computerized voice. No problem.
BUT ~ I immediately started having ghastly problems with my PC ~ programs have disappeared, and so have several of my most precious files, amongst which are some pictures which took literally hundreds of hours to do on the 'Paint' program. It has also become either horrendously slow connecting to the internet, or it just keeps saying that it is 'connecting' without ever doing so. Even accessing my own files takes forever, and nothing looks the same.

At first I thought "Aha! System Restore should fix this!" ... Read more

We have multiple M73 tinys that recently lost their activation.  Trying to reactivate we get "The product key has been blocked by Microsoft"  So far this has only happened on a handful of machines but we have over 100 in a school environment so if this keeps going on this will be a major issue and reinstalling wont be a feasible option.   I did follow the steps in https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/ht078865 and both show everything as fine.

How can I re-associate .mp4 files with video details displaying in the Details Pane? After installing the K-lite codecs pack, my mp4's all began displaying in the details pane as audio files (Album, Artist etc) and no longer displays the important video default details (size, frame height, bitrate etc). I assume it was because of incorrectly associating file types when installing the codecs (even though wmv's, avi's are still correct), so I uninstalled the codecs but the Details categories remain for typical audio files. I've exhausted The Google and I'm stumped... any help? (Win7, 32-bit with VLC as my default player) Thanks!

Guys, need some feedbacks on my problem I'm facing right now on my WINDOWS 10 PRO:

- I joined Insider program in Nov,'14 to get a taste of developemental version's upcoming features of Windows 10 Tech Preview.

- My Tech preview got updated on 29th Jul,'15 during first worldwide release of Windows 10 public release!!

- In Sept,'15 , (I was running my PC as dual boot ie, Ubuntu 10.14 & Win 10 Tech preview both). As I got the Full public version of Win 10 Pro so I tried to remove the Linux OS. But, during removing Linux OS I encountered "disc.img missing" with bluescreen issue. I had to completely format my PC with brand new partitions. I then did clean install of the WIN 10 PRO taking the Disk image from the Microsoft website.

- To activate my newly installed Win 10 Pro, I contacted Windows Answer Desk & after a dozen of logical Q&A the person activated my PC via remote access.

- On yesterday (7th Dec,'15) after auto updation of my PC with the Nov build 10586, I again lost the activation. I was hoping post updation after restarting the PC & connecting the internet my new build windows will get activated intelligently!! But, sadly it didn't.

- I tried manually entering the product code (which I noted down & saved when the Windows executive guy was activating my PC via remote access). Still no luck !! [Error code: 0xC004C003]

- Twice, I did chats with the Answer Desk & they were simply chanting the same line "You need to purchase the... Read more

A:Lost activation after Win10 update Nov build 10586 [Error: 0xC004C003]

As an Insider, assuming the upgrade was from an activated 10240 build with a logged in Insider MSA, then you should be OK - but ask in the Insider forum... I dropped out a long time ago.

The key and subsequent (blocked key) error code is irrelevant on such activations.

Hi. It would be very helpful if you could list the error verbatim.

I need a little help with something that seems simple. I am using Windows 7 Enterprise 64-bit. I have changed the columns in Details view in a folder. However Windows is not populating those columns, so what am I missing? This holds true on both my network drives and my local drives, so I checked my indexing options and they are set to index my local drives, so I assumed that should have at least worked. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Welcome to Seven Forums JLH1. Try this:

Right click an empty area in that folder> Sort by> More

Scroll down the list and make sure the categories you want are checked> OK

the laptop is a Dell Inspiron 15–5559. The white LED blinks 4 times then the orange blinks twice.
Sometimes it works, but after the first time it started up it barely ever works.
I tried starting it with the battery, without it, with the cord, and without that.
What’s going on, and how can I fix it?

Is it possible to get from a PC (or laptop) remotely information such as computer name, mac address, amount of RAM, HDD size, serial number etc?
At my new job one of my tasks is to keep up to date the company's PC/laptop list up to date such info. It would be easier if I could write a script that would go out say once a week to each PC and get the info them update a spreadsheet.
I would probably have to use SNMP or similar.
Is such info available and where does it reside?
