Office 2010 - Remove Microsoft Word/Exel from Open/Save as box

Q: Office 2010 - Remove Microsoft Word/Exel from Open/Save as box

On Microsoft Word 2010, when you go to either the Open or Save as dialog boxes, you see a folder tree called "Microsoft Word", under which in my computer has Templates. In Microsoft Excel, it has a similar affect, showing "Microsoft Excel". I want to remove this tree from view, and ONLY want to see "Computer" (or "This PC" on Windows 8.1). Is this possible, and if so, how?

Can this be done locally and/or through group policy?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I recently installed the Microsoft Office 2010 Beta, but this morning its intro screen stays stuck at "Starting Microsoft Office Click-to-Run." Googling it resulted in only two threads, neither of them having the answer.

I'm back to using Office 2007, by simply setting my Word and Excel documents to open by Office 2007 by default, but now my Word and Excel icons have become much less pretty, such as my Word icons becoming a very plain "DOCX" icon instead of the normal "blue W" icon. I checked, and the file types are still regular Word documents. Is there a way to get the pretty icons back?

A:Office 2010 Problems: "Starting Microsoft Office Click-to-Run" & Unattractive DOCX icons for Word documents.

Regarding changing the icon:
Go to either My Computer or Windows Explorer.
Click Tools, Folder Options, File Types tab.
Scroll down to the DOCX file type (file types are in alphabetical order), click on it one time to highlight it.
Click the Advanced button.
The "Edit File Type" screen appears.
There is a Change Icon button in the top right area.
Click the Change Icon button.
You should have other icon choices to pick from.
Side note: If you don't like any of those icons, you can always hit the Browse button,
and browse to where other icons are, (you can assign any icon to any file type that you want, it is a matter of personal preference).
Icons are found in .exe files (executables), some (not all) .dll (dynamic link library) files, and .ico files.

Greetings,

I'm a former IT Systems Technician, and my girlfriend is a work-from-home writer. I've recently migrated her PC's original processor and ram from an HP motherboard to an ASRock board, linking the original WD Caviar Blue 1TB drive to the board as a secondary drive to collect documents and storage from, while running Windows 8.1 (up to date) on a Seagate Barracuda 250GB for the main OS and programs drive.

With those specs out there in the open, now it's time to get to the root of the problem.

As a work-from-home writer, my girlfriend depends on the ability to save her documents to Microsoft's OneDrive and upload them to her publisher, but with this error showing up, she cannot get them to save. I have never seen such a message in my many years of IT service, and I'm completely baffled.

I am the administrator... So now I turn to you guys for help.

A:Microsoft Office Word 2013 unable to save?

Hello

I purchased my laptop last year and it came with Microsoft Office 2010 Word, and Excel, already installed. I have had no problems with it until now. I simply accessed it from the desktop icon when I needed to use it. Windows did a major update five days ago and although I was able to use Word for the next few days, when I tried to use it today I found that it had completely disappeared from the PC. I can access a new version but I need the original one because it has important documents on it.

I am afraid I am not technically-savvy so I hope that someone can tell me how to restore it, please.

I have noticed that the spec on the PC when I purchased it said that it came with Microsoft Office 2010 Word installed but looking at the Tech Support Guy System Info that I have pasted below, it is described as OS Version: Microsoft Windows 10 Home, 64 bit. I don't know why there is a difference.

Tech Support Guy System Info Utility version 1.0.0.4
OS Version: Microsoft Windows 10 Home, 64 bit
Processor: AMD A6-9220 RADEON R4, 5 COMPUTE CORES 2C+3G, AMD64 Family 21 Model 112 Stepping 0
Processor Count: 2
RAM: 3981 Mb
Graphics Card: AMD Radeon(TM) R4 Graphics, 80 Mb
Hard Drives: C: 832 GB (770 GB Free); D: 98 GB (97 GB Free);
Motherboard: HP, 8330

Hi All....

I am running Win XP Professional, And Microsoft office 2007 2007 Enterprise... Works Great, But with word, We are getting a config screen and then a dialogue that says this:

"An error occurred and this feature is no longer functioning properly. Please run Setup and select 'Repair...' to restore this application"

Now i assumed that this was due to the fact that this was a student account. We then upgraded the account to Domain Admin, and we are getting the same error.

This is in an enterprise, and if we were to repair the Word File, We would have to do it on all 18 computers on said domain.

Is there an alternative?

None of the microsoft office applications (word, excel, powerpoint) will open a document from within the application. The application itself opens fine, everything seems to run fine and then when I go to save it freezes up completely. If I try to open a document from within the application it freezes immediatly also.

This morning I ran the Windows automatic updates and unistalled Corel Paintshop pro 7, Corel Photoshop and a couple old card games. I don't know though if the problem occured before or after these things.

My local computer guy told me to run the "Detect and Repair" feature in Word and it said everything was ok, but I'm still having the problem.

Dear All,

I recently got a laptop with a Starter version of Microsoft Office 2010 installed on it. As this Starter version does not give full use of the features within Excel, I wanted to install my Home and Student Office 2007.

I installed Office 2007 alongside the Starter 2010, however this caused quite a few problems with File associations so I decided to uninstall Office 2010, unfortunately this meant that Office 2007 also did not work as I believe I hadn't installed and uninstalled things in the right order.

I therefore did a system restore to when Office Starter 2010 was on the laptop without 2007. I uninstalled both the Office Starter 2010 file and the Office 2010 file from the Program files. I tried to also uninstall the Office 2010 Click to Run file, however this would not uninstall. It just comes up with an error message "this action cannot be completed. try action again. if problem continues, contact microsoft product support".

I have now installed Home and Student Office 2007 and it seems to be working, despite the Office 2010 Click to Run file still being on the computer.

What I would like help with is the following: should this be okay now? Is it okay to leave the Click to Run file and the associated Q drive there and be running Office 2007? Or do I need to make sure I eradicate the Click to Run altogether? If so, how?!

Grateful for any help you can give!

Suddenly I have a computer that won't handle and aspx operation properly. A website has a button you click to generate a report, in word doc form. But now instead of opening as a word doc, you're prompted to open or save a .aspx file. The aspx file opens in notepad, but that's part of the problem, because it should be creating and opening a *.docx file not an *docx.aspx file.

This works fine on other computers, and worked fine on this computer until a few days ago.

I have tried:
Mucking around with different security settings in IE,
Looked at file extensions, tried setting them to open aspx with word or with IE,
Tried the aspx file association reg fix on this site.
Tried repairing office
Tried sfc /scannow (found no integrity violations)

Nothing has worked.

I seem to recall figuring this out before, but I can't remember what I did.

Hi everyone,I've been having serious problems with my laptop recently. I'm running windows vista 32-bit. The problem started when I went to save a file in both powerpoint and word. Both programs crash as soon as I try and save something. I then tried to open a file and both crashed again. I downloaded openoffice and the exact same problem occurs with that program. I click OK and when the test is complete I get another error message saying,"Cannot find the C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HiJackThis\hijackthis.log file."So, since I don't have a log file, I took some screen shots instead. A:Microsoft Office Starter 2010 Won't Open

Hi jmrpjb,

Please double-check if the program that you uninstalled is 'Word Starter 2010' or 'Office Starter 2010'? Please share the exact steps that you performed to uninstall it.

You may also try the following steps to repair the 'Office Starter' in the mean while:
- Click 'Control Panel' > 'Programs' > 'Programs and Features' > Locate 'Microsoft Office Starter - English' > 'Right click' it and select 'Change' > Select 'Repair' > Follow through with the repair process

- If the issue persists, you may also try to uninstall 'Click to run' and configure 'Office Starter' again: "Cannot be opened" error when you start an Office Starter 2010 program.

'Office Starter 2010' is a 'factory installed' program that may not be re-installed. If any vital file has been accidentally deleted; or the program could not be repaired by the above mentioned steps, you may have to try to restore the system settings back to 'factory defaults'.

You may want to have a close look at the following article also: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/982434

Hope this helps. Please share the findings; will take it forward.

You got it save it as a Word Document in Open Office. If you opened it and then resaved it in Open Office it may have saved it as an Open Office file type instead of a Microsoft Word File Type. I know there is a way to make Open Office to default to saving as a Word Document. Just look thru the settings. So your first step to investigate is too see what file type OpenOffice is saving as by default.

I have a user who has been using Word 2010 for a couple of weeks with no issues until this morning where she is no longer able to open word documents using either File-Open, Open on the quick access toolbar or CTRL O.

At present if you go to the file tab and select open - it goes back to the home tab but does not display the open file dialog box.

You can select an item from the recent file list and this will open, you can select a file in windows explorer and double click and it will open so the association is OK. But I cannot get the open dialog to appear in word.

Excel and other office programs are working fine it is only Word.

The user is using Windows 7, Microsoft office 2010 standard.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled the Office software but the problem has persisted.

I have been unable to 'google' my way through this one, so hopefully someone here can suggest a solution.

Are you sure this issue happens only in Word? What about Excel or PowerPoint?

Hello, I have Windows XP purchased in 2005, and came with Microsoft Office.

I was using Microsoft word early this morning and something happened and now it won't open.

Of all my desktop icons, everything has color except the Microsoft is WHITE, which I suspected right away had been compromised.

I don't have any Microsoft word software, it came with my computer.

Help, can I get it back? I need to write some letters.

Thank you.

This link should prove useful http://support.microsoft.com/kb/821593 often the installation files are left on the computer under c:\msocache however the above links gives the easy way to repair the installation.

Hi,
I can not open ms Word documents by double-clicking on them anymore, When ever I do so I get a mesage saying: "There was a problem sending the command to the program."
I do get the Word window open but there is nothing in it. I have tried this with .doc, .docx and .txt files and I get the same thing.
But I can open files if I first open word and then go to Open and select a document from there, but not by double clicking.
I am using Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit and Microsoft Office Word 2007, can anyone help me?

Open Word, go to the Office Orb, then Resources, and then "Run Microsoft Office Diagnostics.

This will check out the install and do a repair if needed. You will need to the "Office cache" file on the hard drive or have the Office CD handy, if it is needed.

Hi,
I'm not sure when this started as I have not used Office in a few weeks.  My computer uses Windows 7.  Today, I went to open a document in Word and it said "File Conversion--Select the encoding that makes your document readable."  I can choose between Windows, MS-DOS, or other encoding.  I went to check another file and it says "The file cannot be opened because there are problems with the contents."  It also says "The file is corrupt and cannot be opened."  I get the same kinds of messages with every document and with my PowerPoint as well.  All of my Office is 2007.
I tried running my AVG Free and SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition and they did not pick up anything.  I also tried restoring to my last update, but was told that I cannot because the file was changed in the process.  I had to restore for another, unrelated issue about a week ago and it worked fine.
I'm thinking this is some kind of virus but I have no idea how to handle it since nothing is picking it up and I can't restore to even three days ago.  Any help would be IMMENSELY appreciated, as I am a college student and need to be able to hand in final papers!
Thanks!

Update--I'm starting to think that one of my antiviruses cleaned out the virus because nothing is showing up, but my documents are still corrupted.  I deleted my normal.dotm file, and also scanned my C Drive for errors so I could revert to my backup from November 18, but everything is still corrupted.  I would like to know if 1) I got the virus, or if it is still lying dormant in my system somewhere; 2) if my computer is safe to use; and 3) if there is any way to get my documents back!
Thanks.

I've experienced this problem twice in the past week. Here is my current problem:

New Windows 8 computer
Moved Office 2010 install from old computer to new computer
Copied all documents to new computer by installing the old drive in the new computer (NTFS to NTFS)

When trying to open any DOC, DOCX, XLS, XLSX, PPT, or PPTX files that are stored in the Documents folder I get permission errors. Word will open an RTF file just fine. If I try to use any Office programs to save a file to the Documents folder, I also get permission errors. I can move the file to the Desktop and work with it just fine. I can then move it back to the Documents folder.

Here are the errors when trying to open files:
Word - Word cannot open the document: user does not have access privileges
Excel - 'C:\Users\xxxxxx\Documents\Book1.xlsx' could not be found
Powerpoint - The path or file name for C:\Users\xxxxxx\Documents\Presentation1.pptx is invalid.

When I try to use one of these programs to save to the Documents folder, I get the following error:
You don't have permission to save in this location.

I tried copying the files two different ways to eliminate any lingering NTFS permissions. I used a linux box to copy from the old drive to EXT4, then to a linux formatted FAT drive. I plugged this FAT drive into the Windows machine and moved the files over but got the same errors. Next, I copied the files from the old drive to a FAT32 drive using another Windows box. Then I tool the FA... Read more

Running Windows 7 on my desktop. (MS Word on my Windows 10 Dell laptop is trouble-free.) It constantly freezes (every 3rd or 4th time I save during an editing session) on save or save as....have to reboot the program. Happens on all docs. Looked this issue up online, the "solutions" didn't work for anyone. I uninstalled/reinstalled to no avail....it was solid for 3 days, now back to freezing. Any ideas?

Unable to open Microsoft Office documents(excel, word) in Internet Explorer when we enforce strict TLS 1.2 protocol (Disabling SSL v2,SSL v3,TLS 1.0, TLS 1.1)on the webserver. We tested by removing strict TLS 1.2 and IE is able to open the document fine.
Error description : We see a Microsoft Excel Security Warning with the following content.
Certificate error
The application experienced an internal error loading the SSL libraries.

When we disabled SSL V2 and SSL V3, the document opens fine but when TLS 1.0 is disabled we are seeing the  pop-up with certificate error. We tried to open the reports in CSV format, 2007 format and 2003 format and all of them have the same issue. Does
Internet Explorer have any restrictions when TLS 1.2 is strictly enabled ?

Note : We are able to download the document using Internet explorer and the document opens fine from local but opening the document from the browser fails with certificate error.
