Spyware Issues/slow Computer/windows Issues

Q: Spyware Issues/slow Computer/windows Issues

First of all, let me preface this that I am not a computer expert so I really need someone to kind of slowly lead me thru this. My computer runs well for a while with no issues... if I leave and come back (especially after a few hours), it slows down...Also recently, when I restart the computer to get it back to normal, it seems like it takes forever for Windows to start up.... sometimes after several attempts and the black screen with the options about restarting Windows in Safe Mode and Windows Did Not Start Successfully.... Here is my HiJackThis log....Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2Scan saved at 9:22:27 AM, on 11/17/2007Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180)Boot mode: NormalRunning processes:C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\LEXBCES.EXEC:\WINDOWS\system32\LEXPPS.EXEC:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\nvsvc32.exeC:\Program Files\Sunbelt Software\CounterSpy\SBCSSvc.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\fxssvc.exeC:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXEC:\Program Files\Musicmatch\Musicmatch Jukebox\mm_tray.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\taskmgr.exeC:\Program Files\Glary Utilities\memdefrag.exeC:\Program Files\Avant Browser\avant.exeC:\HJT\HiJackThis.exeR0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.pledgepark.com/R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.yahoo.com/R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.yahoo.com/R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,AutoConfigURL = 12.25.240.9R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

My computer has been running fairly slow lately. After running the symantec scanner, etrust and a bunch of other things I found that I have some spyware problems.

XoftspySE says I have problems with WildTangent, CWS.Dreplace, CWS.Oslogo, Purityscan\ClickSpring, and Viewpoint. From what I read Viewpoint came from AOL so I'm not sure if I need to do anything about it.

Here is my log, thanks for any help:

Okay, About three months ago, I got hacked HARD...permissions were changed, administrator rights were removed from my administrator accounts, etc. i was flabbergasted. THe iactually didn't bother me though until I ran a MBAM scan and found 133 viruses and spyware instances on my drive (NOT including tracking cookies!). I cleaned and recleaned, using MBAM, SuperantiSpyware, Avira, running each one in safe mode first, then loading into my normal account and running them, and finally erasing my user account and creating a new one. But even after the new user account was created with Administrator privileges, I still routinely received virus and Malware threat warnign flags from MBAM and Avira. Eventually, Avira and MBAM were disabled and Avira was "deleted" (Windows will not uninstall because the setup.exe file has been 'Changed" and won't reinstall it because I don't have "Administrator privileges" on my Administrator accounts!) even though at startup I receive an error message saying that Avira has been corrupted. The most telling issue is that antivirus and spyware/Malware scans come up clean on Safe mode scans, but using my normal account, the machine reboots. Using Superantispyware I notice that it's always during the memory test that this occurs (and in Safe Mode, it passes through this section with no issue). None of my antivirus programs will download updates, even ones I start manually, and although I have no problem acc... Read more

Hello, I am having issues with updating my ASUS A53U laptop. It has been slowing down dramatically, and when I tried to update Windows 7, it would give this error:

" Windows Update error 80246008

You must be logged on as an administrator to perform these steps.

If you receive Windows Update error 80246008 while downloading updates, you might need to change the Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) or Windows Event Log service settings, and then restart each service. "

I am unable to enable BITS, and when I try it gives this error:

Windows could not start the Background Intelligent Transfer Service service on Local Computer.

error 1068: the dependency service or group failed to start.

My CPU's usage has also increased dramatically as well. With only a few tabs open in Google Chrome and Skype on, its usage peaks around 60-70%. I fear something suspicious might be in my computer, but I would not like to jump to conclusions; a confirmation on this issue would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a bunch in advance.

Hello, I'm back again and need some help cleaning my laptop. It is running incredibly slow and has a 2.7 Ghz processor and 704 MB RAM.

I performed the 5 step process with the following exceptions:

Step 2: I had to stop the Panda scan. It had been running for more than 3 hours, and was only 15% complete. At that point, it showed more than 250 infections. It also showed a significant vulnerability, MS06-022. I have attached a discussion of what I found about this vulnerability in the doc MS06-022.doc.

Step 4: I have SP2 installed on my computer (done before this happened). When I ran the update, it showed SP3 for download. Based on your instruction, I did NOT install.

Attached is the following:

1) Panda scan
2) MS06-022.doc

Here is the DSS log (extra.txt did not run).

OK, so I've been having issues lately with my laptop running extrodinarily slow, even when it's offline. Explorer.exe at times will eat up an absurd amount of memory, like in the 100+k range, and windows will take over a minute to work. Also, for some time, many websites will give me the 404 error even though I know they work because I've tested them on another laptop on the same network. So, here I am hoping someone will be able to tell me what the problem is.

I've used both Ad-Aware and Spybot on my system, and have SpywareBlaster installed with all 3 having the absolute latest updates.

Lately my computer has been experiencing some issues. Here are the symptoms:

-When I click on the IE icon, most of the time it doesn't come up. I have to click it several times to launch IE
-When I finally get to IE, the buttons (back button, etc) don't work
-A lot of times when I go to exit from IE, it freezes and I have to use the task manager to exit
-Internet is slow since these issues started
-I get pop ups, until recently I never got these
-When I do a search, if I click on the result I want it goes to a completely different website.

I run Avast, and have Spybot also. Whenever I run a scan on Spybot, it always finds the same spyware. They are Right Media, Burst Media, Double Click, Media Plex. It says they are tracking cookies.

I am requesting assitance with this. Also, I'd like to know how to prevent them from infecting my computer from here on out. What is a tracking cookie, and how do I prevent it?

Here are my DDS results:

I have Win XP Pro and I started having issues about a week ago where things boot up and run correctly until a message comes up "Windows - No Disk" error with an Exception Processing Message and Cancel, Try Again and Continue buttons on the window. I have had this error window and others pop up at boot-up as well. Could someone please look over this HJT Log and see if there is anything that I need to deal with that might be causing this and other issues. One other thing that happens is the response to mouse clicks become "mutted" or have no response after these messages are cleared. Usually you can get the mouse click to finally respond if you continually click on what you want or get something to close and then try what you were doing before. Thanks for your help. Hello!I've got a Dell that we purchased in December 2007. About a month or so ago, one day it wouldn't boot properly. After much time in safe mode and lots of scanning (Malwarebytes, AVG, and Super-Anti-Spyware), I got it going again. However, it is very very very slow to load the desktop items after a re-start. I don't think it should be that slow; pretty sure it wasn't before.I had a multitude of Trojans and nasties on here that I believe I have cleaned up. Where they came from I've no idea, but they were there. Right now there seem to be a couple of things that AVG can't do anything with. Every so often I get a warning about a couple of things, try to Heal or Move to Vault, and ultimately have to Ignore. I would greatly appreciate any help that you wise folks can offer. Whatever logs you need to see, etc, please point me in the right direction and I will provide them as quickly as possible. As soon as I can find the names of the things AVG can't touch, I'll post them. Edited to add - I should post the OS I guess! Windows XP Home Edition. Also, I most often use the SeaMonkey browser. Occasionally I use IE for some sites that will only work on IE, and once in a great while I use FireFox.Edited again to add: I downloaded, updated & ran a-squared. I did the 2nd scan, not the quick one, not the deep one. It came up with 2 things -- Trojan Mailfinder!IK in windows sys32 userinit.exe and TrojanZlob!IK in a Tivo converter program... Read more

Hello Tech Support Guy
I am dealing with some malware problems. I recently got a virus from some site and it's affecting my computer. I used VundoFix, SuperAntiSpyware, Ad-Aware, and AVG to get rid of some of the stuff and it helped so far. However, I still have problems. Here is a list of what I am experiencing:

1) Pop-ups that say: "SSUPDATE.EXE - Bad Image: The application or DLL C:\Windows\system32\wowfx.dll is not a valid Windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette." Some of them also include "lsass.exe" instead of "wowfx.dll" and the "ssupdate.exe" changes as well.

2) I cannot enter control panel because it disappeared completely. My add/remove section is not showing either and I get this message: "Restriction: This operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator." The thing is, I am the administration and I did not do this.

3) My anti-virus program (Kaspersky) is not working anymore. It's visible but it does not do any scans or catch viruses.

Hi all! My wife's computer (a Dell Dimension DE051 - Intel Celeron 2.53GHz processor - 2 GB RAM) runs way slower than it should. It also has issues on sites with Flash or Java content (I'm not sure which or if it is both). Hello everyone. I've just arrived at my Mother's house and she's having lots of problems with her computer. She had no anti virus installed and told me that some mornings she would come to the computer to find that certain applications had either appeared or disappeared. I noticed that many of the things I had previously installed for her are now missing.

I downloaded and installed AVG Anti Virus but now the computer is running slower than ever - it takes anywhere between 2 and 3 minutes for an internet explorer page to open - and sometimes in the middle of being on a webpage, it will suddenly open to a new webpage though I haven't touched anything.

It seems to me there is some sort of virus or something, but I didn't find anything that wasn't deleted during the virus scan. Any thoughts? I would really appreciate some help.

Thanks!

First of all, I wanted to drop BitDefender and use another program. I uninstalled it but now it's just stuck in my programs and features list and when I try to uninstall it, nothing happens. Its services are running 24/7 and I can't shut them down. When I try to uncheck them in selective startup, they recheck themselves as soon as I hit apply.

Also, I've been having issues with FPS lag in one of the games I play: Diablo 3. The game runs like a champ at a beautiful 60 FPS... and then suddenly it will drop to 4-8 FPS for seemingly no reason at all. My internet is staying steady and there's not always a lot of effects on the screen. It happens at pretty regular intervals of a few minutes and stays like that for about 5 seconds each time. During this, D3 uses gigantic amounts of my CPU for ??? reason. I should add that I was recently running 31x.xx drivers from Nvidia and it was way worse. Now that I updated to the latest driver it seems to be a LITTLE better with less frequent stutters, but still unplayable just as described.

Finally, my computer is way slower than it should be on startup. I used to run HJT and fix things myself because I thought I knew what I was doing... but then I broke my boyfriend's computer so I think that's not such a good idea. Anyway, here's my HJT log followed by my DxDiag log:

hi, welcome to TSG.
I don't see anything wrong with your log, except for too many programmes running!
When was the last time you ran disk defragmenter?
you have far too many start up items, use the link below to trim them down.

http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_index.htm

Try trunning these tools see if they find anything and ccleaner will get rid of a lot of unnecessary files like temp files etc!
download ccleaner

http://www.ccleaner.com/
* Install CCleaner
* Launch CCleaner and look in the upper right corner and click on the "Options" button.
* Click "Advanced" and remove the check by "Only delete files in Windows temp folders older than 48 hours".
* Click OK
* Do not run CCleaner yet. You will run it later in safe mode.

go to this site and download these tools and once you get both
adaware Se 1.6 and spybot, update both of them.

Set adaware to do a full system scan and deselect, "search for neglible risk
entries". Click next to start the scan. Delete everything adaware finds.

reboot and now run spybot

Spybot: Search and destroy.

Delete what spybot finds marked in red. After updating spybot hit the
immunize button.

reboot again

Go here and download Microsoft Antispyware Beta. First in the top menu click

I am having a problem with my computer, it is running kind of slow in general, but in particular, when I try to burn a CD I get a message that the speed of the burn is too fast. I tried doing it on the slowest possible setting and had the same thing occur. This has never happened before and I have burned CD's for ever.

I have done all of the normal things that a person does to speed up their computer (all of the things recommended on this site) with no results and apparently there isn't a malware problem.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Hi, I realy need some help here, not sure if this is the right category, because I dont really know the cause of the problem, hence me asking for help...
Right, well over the past few weeks my computer suddenly got slow and started getting slower and slower. The mouse now freezes a lot, but I can still see where the cursor is moving to, like if I move the mouse over links, they highlight, btu the mouse physically does not move on screen.

I have following spec:

Pentium IV 3.0GHz,
1GB RAM,
256MB Nvidia 6800
XP SP2

I have done the following things to resolve (none with any effect):
CCleaner (run all the cleaning procedures)
Perfectdisk 8.0 (offline and normal defrag)
Spybot SD
SpywareBlaster
Ad Aware SE
AVG
Windows Disk Cleanup
System Restore
Updated/restored previous graphics drivers
... and I trawled the net for sorting out mouse problems but nothing worked...

PLEASE HELP!!!!

Thanks

When I start up my computer, it takes a very long time to get going.  Like, I have a floating mouse for several minutes before the profiles pop up on the first blue screen.  Then my background loads several minutes before any icons or before the computer will let me do anything.  I have run a computer defragmentation, and I have stopped many of the start-up programs, but to no avail.

Even after the computer starts running, things go slow.  Any program that I try to start takes a long time to get going (once it gets going it normally seems to function okay.)

I may be wrong, but it also seems like my computer somewhat randomly dims and brightens the screen now.

Also, some programs have just acted odd/not worked.  For instance, I tried to install a new printer to the computer, and it wouldn't read the drivers.

I am running a HP HDX Premium Series laptop with Windows 7.

Thank you for you help!

Alright so, here's the thing:

When I press shift + something to capitalize letters, it doesn't happen. Instead, whatever I write while having shift pressed down doesn't appear. When I stop holding shift, everything I typed down appears, but backwards. Also, my computer mixes capital and small letters. This does not always happen, and I think it is triggered by something, because after I restart my computer everything turns back to normal. I tried changing keyboards, its not a hardware problem.

Also, my computer has been rather slow lately. I tried disk cleanup, defragmentation, uninstalling unnecessary programs, running anti-virus scans (I used ESET's nod32) and nothing showed. However, when I browsed my registry, I noticed a number of strange entries. When I googled them, I learned that some of them are related to malware or viruses. I do posses some basic computer skills, but I'd rather not mess around the registry too much.

Basically, I need a lot of help here. Thanks in advance.

Please need your help, I am at the end of my rope with the issues on my computer, I have a Dell 9100 bough it in 2005,windows XP home edition upgraded to sp3. the computer is very slow to start (it takes 10 min.) and barely usable when running any large program like autocad or PS, which used to run fine!

I have attached 3 images of the typical errors I get. It all started when I shut down some "services" trying to speed up the machine, after I read an article about it in CNET.

other know issues:

error message: "Windows Installer service could not be accessed" occurs when you try to add or remove a program" I downloaded the WI 4.5 today and I still get the error message when I tried to install software to backup my hard drive in case I got lost.

"mmc.exe - Entry Point Not Found" The procedure entry point [email protected]@[email protected]@[email protected] could not be located in the dynamic link library mmcbase.DLL. I get this error when trying to run the "services.msc"

I have expend all day today reading possible solutions in the Microsoft support and it seems that I am running in circles with my issues. this one got me to a tread in your forum which seems to indicate that it may be a problem either with SP3 or the MMC.exe file. In reading here and in other forums, I also discovered that I have been running MS security essentials and Kaspersky internet security 2011.

Ok, I'm a little confused, you shut down some Services, and you're now wondering why Windows installer Service is not working. But now you are trying to go to Services.mmc and it is giving you an error? Plus your 3 attached pics of other problems.
Well the first two attachments point a failing HDD. Since you shut down services, there are many other things that can be causing this.
go to Start/Run and type services.mmc and press enter. If you get this error, Restart the computer and press F8 and choose Safe Mode. Try Start/Run and services.msc again. If this still fails, then boot normally and go to Start/Run and type appwiz.cpl and press enter. In the Add Remove Programs, Uninstall SP3 and restart. You should now be able to enter services.msc. Turn on all services that you turned off. Now go to Start/Run and type CMD and press enter. In the Command Prompt type chkdsk /R and press enter. Now type a Y for Yes and restart the computer. Check Disk will run at next bootup and try to fix any file errors. If this won't run then the HDD needs to be replaced. If it works, then reinstall SP3.
You may need to do a Repair Install

Hi all,

I've recently had some serious spyware issues and have had to reinstall Windows XP. Once I had done that all appeared to be working as the system booted normally and my Microsoft Office applications still worked, however when I attempted to access Windows Update on Internet Explorer 7, the page did not appear. I then attempted to access other websites and found I could only access one or two at the most. I know this is not an internet connection problem, so I have concluded that the spyware has created bogus definations within the Windows XP system. I would be very appreciative if anyone could reply with a solution, or even an alternative reason of why I cant access many websites.

Many thanks.

I connect the internet through a linksys adsl router to which 2 other pcs get connected. I happened to clean some trojans from one of the other pcs with spybot two days back. I suspect this might be the cause.

more info:
I connect the internet through a linksys adsl router to which 2 other pcs get connected. I happened to clean some trojansfrom one of the other pcs with spybot two days back. I suspect this might be the cause.

I was working on a friends computer where all there files were gone or so it seemed. I then ran combofix which returned the icons on the desktop screen. However when I went to the c: the folders were there but nothing in them or so it seemed. I thought mounting the drive in BSD would work and the drive would not detect. I then tried to mount the drive with windows 7 and xp and again the drive would not detect. I then put the hard drive back into the original machine and it would no longer boot. When I ran combo fix I found that it removed the windows repair spyware programs. But I'm not sure if it is the drive or the spyware. Would the spyware not allow the drive to read in other operating systems? Any help would be appreciated.

Hello and sorry for the delay.

First of all, if this is an IDE drive, did you set the jumpers back from Slave to Master?

What do you see when you try to power the computer on?

Dell XPS 1330 running windows vista 64 bit, 4 g ram, (supposed to be) 320 g harddrive

Oooooooooookkkaaaayy.... well. This is probably all my fault really. I thought I could fix stuff.... turns out I dont actually know what I'm doing and I think I may have made things worse....To start from the begining- In general, I have an issue with the hard drive... When I remove stuff, the hard drive adds gigabytes rather than removing them. It says something like '213 gbs out of 293' and and when I started I KNOW there was way more than that and I've uninstalled all the programs I added (Long story) and cleaned out the hidden files so I know for a fact there is nothing there to take up the space. I want my memory back, grrrar. Anyway...

So I was going through my control panel and deleting bloatware, you know stuff the laptop came with that I dont really need, trying to figure out the affor mentioned problem of memory adding instead of lessening and I removed this thing called 'Microsoft Games for Windows LIVE redistributeable' thinking Oh, thats just some app trying to get me to use games I dont need, lets get rid of it. BIG mistake. After that my games (Fallout 3 and oblivion, to be specific) had issues. Fallout wouldn't start, something about 'xlive.ddl' which I figured must have something to do with the microsoft games whatsit and oblivion seemed to be fine but I decided to uninstall it (just...don't ask....) and I started getting this error- setupdll/setupdll.cpp (390) PAPP:Oblivi... Ha that's precisly my problem with my laptops. It happened with a few of my games, I took the suckers off and it kept on taking space instead of deleting it. I'm in the same boat

Hello,
I am not exactly sure what's wrong with my computer, but I suspect its spyware/virus(s)/malware etc. The computer is very slow, it takes a while to start up and shut down. Opening files (jpeg, doc, xls and others) also takes a long time. Often enough the file does not even open, it freezes/crashes the application/program, or the whole computer and when I try to "x" out, a window indicating that an error has occurred pops up. Same story with internet explorer; takes a while to open, extremely slow, freezes, frequent error messages and occasionally it shuts down on its own. Error messages usually read "explorer has experienced an error or malfunction, it will shut down and restart." Sometimes the errors say "fatal error", "unable to start/open", or that a program just stopped working (for ex: "word.doc has stopped working"). Often enought, if the errors will cause the computer to freeze, I have to close all applications (Ctrl Alt Del or just hold down power botton) and restart. It either restarts in safe mode or starts running system checks. Same errors appear when using other programs.
I am using Windows Vista and have Norton 360 installed. Norton frequently finds a large number of tracking cookies (pretty much every time a scan is run) as well as other threats. Unfortunately I don?t have access to Windows Install disc, or a Boot CD.
Please help! I will really appreciate any assistance with these issues.

My laptop is the only computer in the house with slow wifi speeds, thinking it was a problem with the computer itself, I restored it. The problem persists. I connected to another network I found, and everything was fine. I tried restarting the router, nothing. Put my other laptop in the same area to check for interference, works fine. so why is it only my computer and only on my connection? Any help is appreciated.

Hello, I think I may have a couple of problems going on.

A) I have noticed that my computer has been running slower than usual. It seems that something is running on hard drive. I don't think it my virus update because it is set to run only when I prompt it to.

B) My e-mail account is a concern. I occasionally get junk mail, like stock info or men's medications. I usually add them to my block senders list. I have noticed that some of the e-mail addresses that I block come from ligitimate sites, i.e. design/build firms or realtor firms. Can e-mail addresses be hi-jacked? The reason I ask is because this morn. I went to block one and my own e-mail address came up.

Would it be okay if I sent you a hi-jack this report for you to take a look at?

Thanks so much!

Hi!
I'm new to this particular forum, I've tried to get help recently on another and failed! My computer is running very slow - start up, running programs, internet etc. I have run Adaware, Spybot, I run AVG on a regular basis and I've run CCleaner. When I had Ccleaner check for issues there were a lot of missing dll's and activeX issues and unused file extensions.
Here is my hijack this log for what it's worth - I will check back and see what else you may need - I appreciate any help! :)

When opening Google Chrome on my computer, I get an error message and an unable to use the program.  Further, Internet Explorer often kicks me off after an extended amount of use.  On top of this, my computer as a whole has been slow, especially in regards to internet functions.  The internet itself seems to be coming in at a good speed, but my computer is unable to utilize it.

I recently ran MalwareBytes, which found over a hundred issues which it claimed to have fixed. Prior to this, I was getting numerous pop-ups, but this has since been fixed. However, any of the other problems are still ongoing.

Please advise on how I should continue.
