On-board speakers are scratchy but external speakers & headphones sound good?

Q: On-board speakers are scratchy but external speakers & headphones sound good?

With Dell Support Assist microphone test -- earphone playback is good, on-board speaker is terribly scratchy. The sound card lists as "ATI high Definition Audio Device" and "IDT High Definition Audio CODEC."
The laptop is Dell Studio 15 (1555) running windows 7 Professional, 236GB used, 214GB free space, Intel P8700 2.53 GHz Processor, 64 bit OS, 4GB memoryThe built-in speakers used to sound good but now they are too scratchy to understand. However the headset and external speakers (both 3.5 mm jack interface) sound good and a HDMI connected projector sounds good.
I will appreciate advice.

Preferred Solution: On-board speakers are scratchy but external speakers & headphones sound good?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: On-board speakers are scratchy but external speakers & headphones sound good?

Hello. As a test, switch from the IDT audio driver to the Windows native audio driver.
1. Open the Device Manager (find it in the Control Panel, or type devmgmt.msc into the search box).2. Expand the "Sound, video & game controllers" and right click on "IDT High Definition Audio Device".3. Select to "Update Driver Software".4. Click on "Browse my computer for driver software".5. Click "Let me pick from a list of drivers on my computer".6. Put a check in the box "Show compatible hardware" if not already checked.7. In the list of devices, click "High Definition Audio" (the native driver).8. Click "Next".9. On the Update Driver Warning box, click "Yes" (install the driver). 10. Restart the laptop if prompted. If not prompted, then no need to restart.[To get back to the IDT driver, do it again but reverse the names in steps 2 and 7.]
If you get the noise while using the native driver then it is not a driver issue, which would mean there is a strong chance of speaker failure, particularly since the noise is not in headphones. If you would like to replace the speakers I can point you to the service manual.

Why would speakers sound scratchy, but headphones and external cabled speakers sound OK? I have a Dell Studio 15 (1555) running windows 7 Professional.

236GB used, 214GB free space
Intel P8700 2.53 GHz Processor
64 bit OS
4GB memory

The built-in speakers used to sound good but now they are too scratchy to understand. However the headset sound is good. According to the Dell Support Assist utility, the sound card is "ATI high Definition Audio Device" and "IDT High Definition Audio CODEC."
Microphone test -- earphone playback is OK, on-board speaker terrible.

A:Why would on-board speakers sound scratchy but headphones sound OK?

You Dell Studio 1555 laptop uses IDT HD audio driver for the built in laptop speakers.
The ATI HD audio driver is only used if an HDMI connection to an HDMI monitor (with an HDMI audio/video cable) is used.

possibly a driver conflict with IDT audio, built-in speakers may be malfunctioning or dirty (gotta have them repaired if it's a hardware problem and not a software problem). just listing the possible causes for the scratchy sound.

A:No sound from external speakers or headphones

Hello and welcome to the forums georgehagi.

It will 100% be a driver issue.

My suggestion is to go to Dell support website, search for your laptop and install any drivers you can find for audio, hopefully there will be some for windows 7.

Earlier this week I received and downloaded the latest update to Windows 10. It went smoothly as expected and everything seemed fine until yesterday I began to experience a buzzing scratch noise from my laptop speakers. It was intermittent at first and then it escalated. Certain music and audio like dialogue and certain songs experiences this scratching noise along side the regular audio a lot. To test wither the cause is physical (speakers themselves) or software related (due to update) I have done the following. I have tried what was said in this question; http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Audio/HP-15-audio-crackles-unless-headphones-plugged-in/td-p/5.... I have created a system restore point on the notebook and backup complete data and uninstalled the audio drivers from device manager and reinstalled it. It has not worked and I am now assuming it is a physical problem with the speakers themselves. If that is the case, what should I do? A check seems to show that my warranty is still applicable; should I go with it?

I'm using Windows 7. The computer speakers work, but when I insert known good headphones into the audio jack, the computer speakers mute (as they should), but no sound comes through the headphones. I checked all the sound indicators (e.g. control panel/sound, the sound icon on the tray and device manager) and everything indicates the volume is up and the device is working. I've encountered this problem perhaps a half a dozen times and a reboot always fixes the problem. My only guess is that some application or virus is running in the background which is interfering with the ability of the headphone jack to transmit sound. Does anyone know how I can fix this problem without rebooting the computer? And does anyone know what the culprit might be which is interfering with the sound being transmitted into the headphones? Thanks!

Hi! Please bear with me ... I will not be using the correct terminology, but hope I explain myself OK all the same!
I have a DELL studio XPS PC With Windows 7. I used to have a DELL screen, with a speaker section attached, which belonged to my previous DELL. (Altec Lansing 5650 5.1 Surround Sound Speakers with Subwoofer set).
I ditched this due to the plastic attachments breaking, and the fact that I could only get sound from 2 of the speakers, not all 4, after changing my PC. I therefore thought it was an unnecessary amount of "hardware" kicking around my desk just for getting sound out of 2 speakers.
So, I bought Creative T15 Wireless (Bluetooth) speakers, although I use the wire directly into my PC due to not having Bluetooth. These worked fine to begin with - OK sound, so not complaining.
Now, I'm not sure whether this happened simultaneously with buying a New screen (a Samsung 24") but all of a sudden I started getting very scratchy noises coming from the left speaker. This noise comes even when unplugged from my computer. I contacted Creative who said that if the speakers work when attached to my ipod/iphone then there is nothing wrong with them:

That means the speaker is good. If speaker is faulty, the issue will remain the same no matter as to what device you connect it. Issue seems to be with your computer sound card's audio out. Check the settings in your computer, playback application settings . Reinstall/update the compu... Read more

A:Bad scratchy noise from speakers, but speakers OK. No IDE ATA/ATAPI???

I started getting very scratchy noises coming from the left speaker. This noise comes even when unplugged from my computer

If I understand that statement, your speakers have the scratchy sound, even when unplugged from the computer. Does this happen if the monitor is powered off? (trying to determine if there is some radiation from the monitor that is affecting the speakers).

Hi, hope I'm posting in the right place.

I had a set of GE 2.1 speakers working well with my Sony Vaio for about a year. Recently the sound started to go in & out, I had to move the wire around a lot and tape it or hold it in a certain spot to get them to work. Then one day they stopped working altogether. Assuming it was the speakers, I went and bought a new set from Best Buy. Took them home, plugged them in... and nothing, nothing at all. So I tried the OLD speakers in another desktop computer, and they worked perfectly.

So I assumed my headphone jack was broken and was going to go about trying to get a new piece and solder it and all that, but then I'm sitting here and just realized my headphones work perfectly.

What's wrong? How come the headphones work, but 2 pairs of external speakers don't?

Thanks so much

Hello to all,

I'm running Windows 7 Pro and would like to know if it's possible to have my USB headphones active at the same time my external speakers are. Those are plugged into the rear of the on-board sound jacks of the mobo.

It's kind of tiresome switching between them for gaming when I want the headphones and everything else on the speakers.
Thanks in advance and any help is always greatly appreciated.

A:USB headphones and External Speakers question

Some time ago, on an XP PC, that I no longer have, I had the same problem - no audio jacks in the front of the PC, and no setting in the soundcard control panel to have both 'phones and speakers active.

The solution that I found worked was to get a short extension cable for both the headphones and the mic. This I plugged into the jacks at the rear of the PC and then just left the other end on the desktop. When I wanted the headphones I plugged them in which then muted the speakers.

Another option is that some soundcard control panels allow both the speakers and the headphones to be connected simultaneously and the user is then able to mute/unmute the speakers/headphones through the control panel. You would have to read the literature for your soundcard to see if such an option exits. If I remember correctly RealTek had such a setting.

Hi, I have an HP Pavilion Slimline and everything was fine prior to a move 3 weeks ago. Now I get sound from my headphones but nothing from my speakers, I tried not only the speakers I used before, but a set I had hooked to a TV and nada, Both work well attached to my lap top. I bought a set of wireless speakers from Circuit city and still nothing.

I have run every diagnostic test I can find and everything says my puter is operating at 100%. I uninstalled and reinstalled RealTec and no difference.

Sure hope someone can help, as I think this is a silly reason to have to purchase a new puter, especially since this one is only a little over a year old.

Oh, the only thing different is that I switched from FIOS to Cox cable when I moved.
Thxs for the help ( He says hopefully)

Are you testing the headphones in the same output as the speakers? I'd guess not, which would indicate that output is faulty.

I'm hoping someone can help because HP's phone support was totally useless.

I have a USB headset and a pair of USB powered external speaker that I want to use with an HP Pavilion dv5 I got at Christmas that runs Premium Home Vista.

When I plug in the external speakers, I can see them in the audio devices window and hear them when I run a test. The lights on the speaker are on. I can set them as the default but when I play anything the sound comes still comes from the speakers on the computer.

When we first bought the speakers (earlier this week) they worked fine, but my husband dropped the computer from about 3 inches above the ground on its end (where the ports are) and since then, they work sporadically. I have tested the headphones and the same thing happens. I have been able to hear the speakers using iTunes (but nothing from the internet) but I can't even do that now.

When I called HP, they had me restore the original settings and I have done that twice since then, once because the mute button light under the screen wouldn't go out even though it wasn't muted and once because I disabled the internal speakers to see if that would let me hear the speakers and they disappeared from the audio device list and restoring the settings was the only way I could find them again.

I am a Mac person, so I have not dealt with PCs much and even less with Vista (we haven't upgraded the PCs at work from XP).

Does anyone have any ideas what it could be?

Hi there! I wonder if anybody might be able to help me or point me in the right direction?

My laptop (Acer TravelMate 3270), which is approximately 2 years old, has had difficulty recognising external speakers and headphones since I purchased. Recently, however, I just cannot get either to work. This is what I've done:

1) Fully updated my Realtek drivers

2)checked my speakers and headphones on other computers (both function perfectly)

3)uninstalled and reinstalled my Realtek drivers on a number of occasions.

4)checked that extrenal speakers are not 'switched off' in 'audio properties' to conserve power (irrelevant as my laptop is always plugged into the mains).

5)spent approximately 5 months searching forums and carrying out various tasks...all to no avail.

My internal speakers are fine and sound is good...would anyone be able to help me, I'd be very much obliged!

With my very best wishes,

Hi!I have my 3rd XPS 15 9560 with 32 GB RAM and the 1TB SSD now, after I had to return two of them due to the black screen flickering issue, coil whining and some weird crackle sounds.
This 3rd one has still the black screen flickering and the crackle sounds, but since the flickering is discussed a lot in other forums/threads already I here want to find a solution for the audio crackle.
This audio crackle sound lasts for a second and always appears with plugged in external speakers/headphones and it sounds like when the audio is powered off and on. Seems like some energy saving mechanism that is causing this?It appears mostly when I'm using a browser and the website contains some form of sound and then it always comes, when I switch to a "non-sound-containing" part of the website and then it appears ca. 5 sec after.
Also at the beginning when I start another sound or go on a website that contains sound.
Is there a fix?If I can't solve the screen flicker I will anyway return this notebook too and then buy myself a Gigabyte, Razer Blade or Macbook Pro. But I'm still hoping something can be done.

Disable the WiFi (Killer or Intel) in the Device Manager and run these test =* Test a locally stored music file* If available, plug in a simple USB WiFi adapter and test networked musicIf no noise, then the fault is latency stemming from the WiFi driver.

On my brand new Asus laptop, I have not been able to figure out how to get sound out of my headphones when I plug them in. On my old laptop, if I plugged in the headset, sound went there automatically. Not on the new computer. The headset I have has a USB plug. I was able to get sound out of them once- by disabling the speakers, Realtek Digital Output and Realtek HMDI Output--- if I just disable the speakers, the default goes to the Digital Output and I get no sound at all, so I had to disable everything. AND, in order to get all that back, I had to do a system restore to an earlier date because I have no idea how to get them back otherwise. Please help.

I have the Dell XPS 8300 with the onboard Realtek HD Audio.

I can't get any sound from speakers/headphones using any of the ports at the back and the front audio jack.

The speakers are fine as I have tested them on my mobile.

I have the latest drivers installed. Sound is working fine though HDMI on my TV but i'm guessing that's using my graphics card.

I have headphones/speaker selected in sound manager. Also realtek sound manager is detecting that my speakers are connected to the audio jacks at the back and front but still no sound.

In sound manager I can see the green bar moving up/down for Speakers/Headphones.

Could the sound chip on motherboard be fried?
Thanks for you help.

When I first look at this, after starting the PC, it shows that the startup type is 'automatic' but the service status is 'stopped'. Also when I look at the Sounds and Audio Device Properties it shows that both audio and voice default devices are listed as 'Modem #0 Line Playback' with no other options available (i.e. USB Audio Device - Plantronics Audio 500 or Avance AC'97 Audio for VIA ® Audio Controller). When I click on Service Status 'Start' in the Windows Audio Status, the Service Status changes to 'Started' and the audio and voice default devices in properties, change to 'USB Audio Device'.This is about as far as I've got but, even though the audio status tells me the default device is the USB, I still cannot hear anything and, when I restart the computer, it goes back to no audio devices being detected/selected.I'm a reasonable novice where PCs are concerned so apologise if this is either confusing or lacks the correct info. I have the following problem with new Compaq 515 with Windows 7: when headphones are connected to the headphone jack, the laptop speakers will not disable and headphones or external speakers woun't work.

The laptop recognizes headphones (test sounds are coming through) and they can be used for communications, e.g. Skype. The laptop has IDT High Definition Audio CODEC driver's latest version.

Strangely, it is not possible to switch headphones as default device in control panel -> sound. The laptop has following options: Speakers/HP as default device and Headphones (RTC) appear as "Default Communications Device" when selected as default device. I'm not sure this is the problem but it seems strange enough.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

Also, on a related note, if I turn up the volume high, I get high-pitched feedback.

First let me say that I saw the guide stickied at the top for how to properly post a request for help. But I don't know how to classify this.

The problem is I have no sound on my computer from either the speakers (part of the monitor) or the headphones. And my microphone doesn't seem to be working, but I think these two are related. I want to hear sound.

So I'm not sure what to say. I have Windows 7. I have an HP Pavilion Slimline s7320n desktop PC. My monitor is an SVA, model number 7005L. Maybe SVA isn't the brand, but it has those letters on the front.

I have tried plugging the cord that normally handles the sound into all of the jacks in the back of the tower. But I keep getting told that "No audio output device is installed." Maybe I did this simple process incorrectly. I am willing to retry it with help. I can't adjust the volume from my keyboard. Not that it matters because no sound is coming from the computer.

I'm not sure if this problem is hardware or software related. I called tech support for Windows and HP. They both wanted to charge me for them to take the equipment and repair it. But I don't think it's an equipment problem because everything runs just fine. I just can't hear anything.

I recently had a new hard drive installed. As a result, I ended up being upgraded from XP to Windows 7. The sound worked with XP.

This problem is not new, I have had it for several months now. On my 5 year old Dell Inspiron E1505 I have sound through my speakers but not through any headphones, I tried 3 sets of headphones in all 4 USB ports and in the pin type jack, nothing. I tried everything I know of by downloading the latest Sigma Tel Driver from Dell, going into properties, disable, then enable after reboot, select headphones over laptop speakers, etc.

Anytime I would plug my headphones in, it would automatically switch over but it just stopped all of a sudden. However I do have a conflict in my Device Manager under Network Adapters called Other Devices with a yellow question mark with a file name underneath called BCM2045 with a yellow question mark that I disabled. This showed up shortly after my headphone problem started, not sure that would have anything to do with my headphones but it seems odd.

The fuse in my sub is fine, everything I have checked says it is working properly and I still have no sound, well I have a tiny amount of sound coming from my 2 front speakers. I plugged my headphones into the back and sound is working through them. Any suggestions?

This probably is a really simple problem but I can't solve it. I run Windows XP pro. My speakers worked fine until I plugged in the headphones to use with Skype. Now sound only runs thru headphones and even if I unplug them there is no sound thru the speakers. All connections seem fine. I had the same problem on another pc and never was able to find the reason.

A:No sound thru speakers after using headphones

It could be that Skype made that headset your default sound device. Most people have Microphones that come built into their computers now lately. Try uninstalling Skype and reinstalling it.
Go into your Volume Control and check to see what the name of the device it is sending the sound to. If it says its your headset when they are not plugged in, it is the headsets problem.

Also try your Device manager.
Make sure that your headset is not still working even though not plugged in. Right click the name of your headset and click disable.
Hope some of this will help.
After you do this try resetting and check by playing a song or something.

Hi, I'm having trouble getting sounds to come out of my speakers. I downloaded the SB live drivers and turned digital output on and yet I'm getting no sound coming out for my speakers. However when I turn digital output off I get sounds from my headphones just fine. I checked all the volume controls to make sure nothing is muted yet no luck. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Well, Most speakers for computers do not take a digital input so that is causing a problem some where. Where are you plugging the headphones and speakers?

Hello. I'm having a little problem with my speakers. As written in my title, my speakers has no sound. I have went through almost all the related forums on this kind of problems but it seems that almost everyone has problem with the speaker's sound AFTER they installed something or upgraded their software.

after i shut my computer down at night and on it back the next morning, the speakers weren't working and when i play a mp3, avi, rmvb or even youtube, there is no sound at all. However, if i plug in my headphones, they work just fine. Everything else is working fine.
- The light on the speakers is light up
- The wire is plugged into the green hole. It hasn't been moved since about a year ago so i don't think thats the problem.
- The sound card is working fine (There is sound through the headphones)
- There are no conflicting drives.
- There are no exclamation marks or crosses in the device manager.
- My audio isn't mute.

I'm suspecting that my speakers is spoiled. But i'm hoping that someone could help me with it. Because it just doesn't make sense how the speakers could be perfectly fine one moment, and be spoilt after a shut down.

*I can't use systerm restore because when i tried it it says that it couldn't return to the specific time and to solve that problem, i cancel the system restore, shut down and then enable it again.

When you plug in the headphones are you plugging them into a front panel jack? Try removing the speaker plug from the green jack at the back and plug in the headphones there. If you get sound through the headphones, your sound card is probably okay but your speakers are not.

But isn't that the nature of a component failure? It often works fine up until the moment it doesn't. You don't always get a gradual failure. When it fails, it fails.

I have a laptop and I was using my headphones fine for ages then one day I shut it down and when I opened it again the sound came from both speakers and the headphones. The laptop doesn't even recognise the headphones so that when I plug them in, nothing happens to the laptop, it just plays sound through both. It doesn't show up in the disables devices in sound and I have reinstalled the drivers but nothing works. I have tried this with all headphones and earphones in the house and the computer recognised none. It has been like this for a while now and nothing has changed.
I'm running windows 10.
the problem was sudden, nothing changed when it occurred.

I've googled and googled and everything I've tried I either don't have the options or it didn't work. The issue is whenever I plug in my headset.. both my laptop's speakers and mic work.. as well as my headset's speakers and mic. I'm plugging the headset into the audio and mic jacks on the laptop.

My laptop is an Acer Aspire 5570-2052 (Came with Vista, I installed XP Home)

Under the Device Manager's Sound, video, and game controllers list I have:
Audio Codecs
Legacy Audio Drivers
Legacy Video Capture Devices
Media Control Devices
Realtek High Definition Audio
Video Codecs

I also have Realtek HD Audio Manager installed.

What I want to happen is when I plug in my headphone's mic and speaker jacks the laptop's mic/speaker turns off. I've tried messing with all kinds of stuff with no luck at all.

A while back, I began having problems with my sound. I would plug my headphones into my laptop (Acer 5315) and wouldn?t get any sound. The internal speakers would continue to play. So I re-installed driver. This time, I would hear sound in the headphones, but not the speakers. Once again, I would re-install the driver, the speakers would work and not the headphones. After doing this over and over again and getting the same results, I stopped trying.

Tonight, I downloaded the last driver update (Realtek HD version R2.33). And now, sound only plays from my headphones. I?ve tried just about every solution mentioned in these forums and none of them have worked. Is there anything else I can do??? I?m losing my mind! HELP ME PLEASE!!!!

Any help is greatly appreciated. I have a sony vaio VGN-NW310f laptop with Windows 7. Up until 2 days ago everything was perfect, but suddenly I am getting no sound from the speakers. If I plug in headphones I get sound, but if I unplug headphones, nothing! Well, the computer acts like the sound is working, but I hear nothing.
Right now speaker properties shows I have "High Definition Audio Device" by Microsoft. I know that I had realtek speakers before, but in my attempt to "fix" my problem, I clicked "roll back driver" and somehow lost the realtek and now have the microsoft speakers. I guess it doesn't really matter which speakers I have as long as they work!
Any idea how to get sound again!?

A:Help! No sound from laptop speakers, headphones yes!

Use the System Restore and restore the PC back to a date when it did work correctly. System Restore can be accessed from Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools. System Restore will not delete any user data or e-mails. As noted select a restore date that is back when it did work correctly.

Very strange...I get sound when headphones are plugged in, but when they are not, no sound comes from the built-in computer speakers. I have had my computer for about 4 months, and the speakers worked previously; this just started within the last couple days. Any ideas?

A:Sound from headphones but not internal speakers

Try a System Restore - How to. If it still doesn't work, have the laptop check as its just 4 months old, call HP to have the speakers replaced.

hi everybody

I recently bought Acer Aspire 4738 i5 (running 7 ultimate 32bit) and I love it so far. however there's a problem with sound when I plug in the headphone.

when I play it through the build-in speakers the sound is great and actually loud , I've tried another headphones (bought three already :/ ) and still the same thing.

updated the drive, checked the volume to max, tried about everything i could find but nothing seems to work.

I'm starting to think this is an OS issue,
Plz help, headphones are something I can't live without !

A:normal speakers sound but low in headphones
