Word 2000 suddenly stops working, won't load page

Q: Word 2000 suddenly stops working, won't load page

I need some help getting Word 2000 to load on my XP Pro computer. One day out of the blue, Word decided to stop working. The program loads, but a new blank page does not come up so you can start working on creating a new document. Task bar at top of screen shows Word loaded at Document 1 but the desktop and all its icons are what is showing on the screen.

I uninstalled Word re-installed the program again with a different COA and the result is the same. For some reason XP is just not letting Word bring up a blank page. Nor can you call up another Word document to make any changes.

Is there a way to determine why XP won't let Word open?

Please give me any help or suggestions I can try to solve this riddle?
Thank you so much.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi there,
Please try using the "Detect and Repair" feature for Word 2000, if you have not done so already. These are instructions from Microsoft:

Repair Word (Office)
Word can detect and repair problems associated with Setup. This feature uses the Windows Installer to correct problems with missing files and to repair registry settings.
You can use the following methods to repair or reset Word files and values:
Method 1: Use the "Detect and Repair" feature
Method 2: Repair Word in Maintenance Mode Setup
Method 3: Reinstall Word (Office)

Method 1: Use the "Detect and Repair" or "Microsoft Office Diagnostics" feature
Note This method is the least aggressive mode of repair. If this method does not resolve the problem, you may still have to use one of the other methods.
To run the Detect and Repair feature in Word 2003 and in earlier versions of Word, click Detect and Repair on the Help menu in Word. The Detect and Repair feature fixes and repairs Word. All files, registry entries, and optional shortcuts for all Office programs are verified and repaired. If you run Detect and Repair from Word, all other Office programs are also checked. This feature performs only a checksum.
The Detect and Repair feature can also restore the Word program shortcuts on the Start menu. To restore the Word program shortcuts, click Help, click Detect and Repair, and then click to select the Restore my shortcuts while repairing check box.
If Detect and Repair does not correct the problem, you may have to reinstall Word. The Reinstall feature in the Maintenance Mode dialog box performs the same action as Detect and Repair, except that Reinstall copies a file when the files are of equal versions. Detect and Repair does not copy over the file when the installation file has the correct version and checksum.Note The Detect and Repair feature does not repair damaged documents or damaged data keys in the registry or in the Normal template.
If a file that Word uses at Startup is missing, the Windows Installer automatically installs that file before it starts the program.
In Word 2007, run the Microsoft Office Diagnostics feature. To do this, click the Microsoft Office Button, click Word Options, click Resources, and then click Diagnose.
In Word 2010, repair Word or the installed Office suite in Control Panel.

Method 2: Repair Word in Maintenance Mode setup
Note This method is a moderate mode of repair. If this method does not resolve the problem, you may still have to reinstall Word.
The Maintenance Mode Setup process is similar to the process found in earlier versions of Word. The Maintenance Mode Setup process allows you to repair, add or remove features, and remove the program. "Repair" is a feature in Maintenance Mode that finds and then fixes errors in an installation.
To perform a Maintenance Mode repair, follow these steps:
Exit all Office programs.
Use one of the following methods, depending upon your operating system:
In Windows 7 or Windows Vista, click Start, and then type add remove.
In Windows XP or Windows Server 2003, click Start, and then click Control Panel.
In Windows 2000, click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

Open Add or Remove Programs.
Click Change or Remove Programs, click Microsoft Office (Microsoft Office Word) or the version of Office or Word that you have in the Currently installed programs list, and then click Change.
Click Repair or Repair Word (Repair Office), and then click Continue or Next.
In Word 2003 and in earlier versions of Word, click Detect and Repair errors in my Word installation or click Detect and Repair errors in my Office installation, click to select the Restore my Start Menu Shortcuts check box, and then click Install.

If that doesn't work try resetting user options and registry settings in Word. Unfortunately, your user options will be reset as the name suggests. Please follow this article for instructions. Don't forget to backup your files!
I've actually had quite a bit of trouble with Word 2000 and the latter fix did the trick for me.
I hope you get it fixed!

I'm on Windows XP Pro Before my mic was working perfectly fine, but suddenly it isn't. I tested it using the Sound Recorder on Windows and nothing is being picked up, but I tested it on my laptop and it works fine there.

I looked in device manager and under Other Devices there's a yellow question mark next to Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus. I have an XFI Sound Card so I uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers, but that didn't help, so then I uninstalled the driver through the device manager, restarted and the driver reinstalled, but it's still the yellow question mark.

So my audio suddenly stops while playing Rainbow Six Siege. This has happen before while playing siege and is fixed by restarting siege and Uplay and only effects the game and nothing else. This time, everything that involves audio just stops working. Everything has been fine up until now.

I've tried doing system restores, uninstalling and installing the newest driver of the Realtek HD Audio Driver from Asus' website, made sure that the drivers were alright via Device Manager, removed any external drives, and checked for loose cables. Nothing worked so I tried using different headphones, but that did not fix it. Both headphones work when tested through my phone. BIOS has HD Audio enabled. I tried plugging my headphones into the rear jack and I got sound but there was a lot of "static" or "robotic sound" coming through them and the quality was horrible thus driving me to the conclusion that something went wrong with the front panel audio or my headphones are not being detected.

I was just surfing the web and suddenly my internet stopped working. I was downloading something from megaupload but i don't think that's the problem because i've been downloading from megaupload for the past few days..

I tried restarting my router twice but nothing has happened. I am now using another laptop in the house which uses an internal wireless card to connect to the router and everything is fine. My laptop that has no internet now uses a netgear wireless adapter to connect to the router, but i dont think my adapter is the problem either.

I checked my event viewer and under application there is a warning event ID 1517 NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM something about an application was still using the registry during log off. i researched this and some people recommended downloading UPH cleaner..i downloaded it and ran it, but my internet still does not work. Although, after i ran it, under application, it said

"The following handles in user profile hive .... ......... have been remapped because they were preventing the profile from unloading successfully:

svchost.exe (1024)

I've had no problems shutting down and logging on..i dont know what's going on! please help!

Hi xstarsunx, Welcome to BC.That site, megaupload, isn't that kind of like a P2P site? I don't really know, I gave it a look and it seems that anyone can upload and download just about anything there. You may well have polluted your system there. I would suggest that you do the 'copy' thing to this post then dash over here --> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/f/103/am-i-infected-what-do-i-do/ Don't post any kind of logs there unless one of the HJT Team members or a Moderator asks you for something. I just shut down my computer and turned it back on one day to find the sound is completely gone . Ive been trying for hours and I cant put my finger on what could possibly be wrong .

If I try connect speakers to the laptop then the speakers make a very loud and obnoxious buzzing sound . My sound card is Realtek AC97 audio . If I go into my hardware properties then it claims that everything is working fine , which is obviously false . Please help

Do you have the sound drivers, or can you download them from the manufacturer's website? If so, I'd uninstall the sound drivers completely, then re-install them to see if it clears it up.

I'm using a computer built by a local tech guy with a monitor with built in speakers. Recently, the sound stops working in the middle of using the computer. When I reboot it, the sound works again. I read somewhere that flash content takes over the sound system and you have to reboot to get your sound back. Is there any truth to this? And what about Java, which I use for a chat room; can that do the same thing?

A:Sound suddenly stops working!!!

Hi GregCujo, and welcome to TSF.

Flash player is java based anyway so the answer is probably yes.

Try this fix and let us know if it solved your problem.

Update Java
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.
First remove the older versions:Download JavaRa and unzip it to your desktop.
Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.
Click on Remove Older Versions to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer.
Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a logfile has been produced. Click OK.
A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location.
Now let's download and install the newest version:Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7.
Click on Windows XP/Vista/2000/2003 Offline and save the downloaded file to your desktop.
Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.
Reboot your computer.

I have an Acer Aspire One D250 with a synaptics touchpad bought on March 20th which hasn't given me any problems till 3 days ago.

Friday, when I turned the computer on, the touchpad wasn't working. I tried Fn+F7 and nothing. The usual synaptics animated icon wasn't beside the clock. I went to the control panel>mouse>device settings and no device was listed there, while all the options were greyed out. I went to system>device manager and no "Mouse and other pointing devices" was listed. I went to Acer.pt (I'm from portugal) and downloaded the driver and installed it. The instalation went without problems and when I restarted the computer, the touchpad was still not working and nothing was listed on the device manager.

I called the Acer support line and the told me to restore the OS. I spent friday doing backups and I reinstalled Windows XP from Acer eRecovery Management. After all that, the touchpad wasn't working still.

Saturday was spent going to the store where I bought the netbook and trying to find a solution. Just as when I was going to give the netbook to warranty, a guy turned the computer on and the touchpad was magically working again.

I went home, all happy and warm and fuzzy inside.

Today, when I was copying my backups to the netbook again, I hit "cancel", and the icon next to the clock disappered and the touchpad stoped working again. Went to check, and nothing was listed on the device manager or on contro... Read more

Hi DeltaStrikeZeta and welcome to TSF !

So the same keyboard works with another installation of XP on the same computer ?

Does another keyboard work better ? Does a usb keyboard work ?

Were there some updates pending to be installed when you turned the computer off ? Had you installed anything new during the last session ?

Try booting on the installation that doesn't work and repeatedly pressing the F8 key. Can you get to the advanced options menu ? If so try "last known good configuration" and see if it helps.

Is there any way to make the pages 'normal' again, should I just put up with it & hope for the best, or print the text out (7+ pages) then retype the whole thing

Here's how the first page of the .doc go's by paragraph (But in at least one place the text varies between normal, and Body Text 2--whatever that is--in one line) according to the styles box:

Hi Gary.

Tools-Autocorrect, Autoformat as you type tab. Take all checkmarks out of the top and bottom sections. Set the middle section options as you like.

Now, hit ctrl-a and choose the normal style. It should change the entire document to the normal style.

Hello all,

This is my first post here so with any luck, somebody will have to help me. Here's the problem. I start up Windows XP, I open "My Computer" and three devices are listed under the Devices with Removable Storage category: Floppy Drive, CD Drive, and DVD drive. So, I open up the drive and put a DVD in it. Close and then nothing happens (just two days ago, the same disc would autoplay and Windows would ask me what program I would like to use to play the content). The Busy light on the drive stays on and eventually, the drive disappears from those listed in "My Computer."

I reset, go into Windows XP (oh, the drive is detected and correctly identified by the BIOS) and open up "My Computer" again. However, this time I also open up Device Manager and go to my DVD drive (which is a BTC BDV316B). The device status is described as: "This device is working properly." I open it up put a disc in and close. And then suddenly, the device status changes to a Code 45 error (This device is not connected). I power down, note the data or power cable are already securely attached, give them an extra little push and restart. Go into Windows, same story.

In Event Viewer, I got these error message:
Event ID: 9
Source: atapi
Description: The device, \Device\Ide\IdePort1, did not respond within the timeout period.

Hi,

All of a sudden many of my programs either won't launch or stops working right after launch.
I have googled for a long time on this matter, but I'm no wiser.
I have no "reset" point that can fix this, and I have tried "sfc /scannow" (without having a clue what it does). After the sfc /scannow, the command prompt message said I had some corrupt files, and not all of them could be fixed automatically.

Does anyone know what can cause several programs to stop working all of a sudden, and what can possibly fix it?
(Without re-installing Win 8 of course)

Thanks,

Carl

In the elevated command prompt type
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Then run the sfc /scannow again and reboot when finished

ok, i'll make this short, my friend accidently unplugged my external Western Digital 1TB HDD drive from my laptop while I was using it, as well as knocking out the power cord simultaneously. i dont recall actually using anything on the drive or transferring files to/from at the time this happened. But in any case, i plugged it back in and it just wouldnt let me read from it anymore in Computer. The drive's icon was still there but wouldnt let me open it in either Explorer, Total Commander, or Directory Opus. Hi, guys, I'm the newbie from the Philippines. I'm really worried about my USB Flash Drive. I've had it for 5 months now, and I use it on a lot of computers, whether they're Windows 2000/XP, and it always worked well.

Just 2 hours ago, I plugged it into one computer and it worked well. But a few minutes afterwards, when I plugged it into another computer, it wouldn't light up. I plugged it into other computers, including mine, afterwards, and none of the computers read it.

My roommate's USB Flash Drive, however, worked in the computers I plugged my flash drive in.

Does this indicate that I'd have to buy another USB Flash Drive? Is this the work of a virus or just plain stupidity in my part?

Please help me.

A Lenovo laptop with Win 7 x64 after working fine for a year suddenly start to have the following problem.
User at random cases but very often -appr. once per day- is not able to open a file or folder by double clicking or single click + enter key.

What it works for him is single click, right click + open.
In order to start again working I have to open Task Mgr and kill windows explorer process then start it again.
----------------------------------------------
No incidents in Event Viewer.
No new Software/App installed.
No new MS Updates instaled.
---------------------
Note that double click doesn't work on USB mouse nor on touch-pad. The same goes for Enter key, doesn't work on USB keyboard nor on Laptop's Keyboard.

The laptop had a multi printer attached via USB and user claims that this happened usually after scanning.
I removed the printer for a day and he still got the same problem.

Any suggestions?

Thanks for your time!

Hi,
We need some steps and your feedback to troubleshoot the issue.
If you have spare time, please have a try and give us the feedback so that we could provide further help.
About your problem:
Yes, If the registry was messed up for the mouse this means that the problem will show up all the time.
No, you needn't change it to single-click.
process monitor is used during the whole process of the issue occuring. Otherwise, we can't trace any clue.
So we recommend you use some simple method to troubleshoot, update the driver, clean boot etc.

Hi. So, about 3 days ago, before I left on a small vacation, my computer was working fine as usual. After 3 days, my computer has completely stopped working. When I turned my computer on, I heard a loud fan noise, which was an unfamiliar sound, because my computer is very silent. My monitor was also not working for some reason. I opened the computer up and took a look at the video card. I noticed that the fan on the video card was running at an extremely high speed. So, I pulled it out and noticed that it was very hot. So, I tried using the video plugin on the motherboard for the time being, but it did not work. (This was also the first time I ever tried using the motherboard's video card, so I'm not sure if the motherboard problem or not). I also tried using my brother's monitor, but it did not work. So, I replaced the current video card with an older video card I had in storage. However, this video card also started running extremely fast. It had never made that sound before on my previous computer. What is wrong with my computer? The GPU was a MSI R5770 Hawk Radeon HD 5770 1GB. My motherboard brand is an ASUS M5A88-V EVO AM3+.

As the title says, my wireless internet access has very suddenly stopped working. The last time I used it, sometime last night maybe 10 hours ago it was working fine. This morning I wake up and it simply won't work. The only thing I did was turn my computer off before going to bed and it had been off until this morning when I turned it on and it wouldn't work. The thing that confuses me the most about this is from the moment it was working to the moment it wasn't working, I'm 99% sure it was completely powered down that whole time.

I've restarted and rebooted every piece of hardware multiple times already. From what I can tell, the problem appears to be with my computer only, since no one else or any other computer in my house appears to be affected.

Inspiron 1525 running Windows 7 64 bit

Some other facts:

I can connect to the internet perfectly if I plug in with an ethernet cable.
I can connect to my router and access its firmware, and can see my computer as connected to the router.
Other laptops have no problem connecting wirelessly to the internet on the same wireless network.

Do you have a LAN connection icon in the taskbar notifications? Right click on it and troubleshoot it. Windows 7 might be able to repair the connection. If you don't have an icon in the taskbar, go to the Control Panel.

When sniffing around my system in "Credential Manager", I found an unknown set of credentials known as "virtualapp/didlogical" which after a vague research, I deleted. CHECK THIS OUT...

Attachment 62236

After I deleted it, I finished my work and shut down my machine. A few hours later I went to login to my laptop using the same login credentials i've used since system setup....I COULDN'T LOGIN!!

After a tiny shart, I had the wherewithall to google "lost Win 8 passward" and found https://account.live.com/password/reset to reset my password. During login I was able to click on the wifi icon (bottom left) and connect to the internet and presumably my computer updated my new password via Microsoft's Server, and I logged in with the new password.

This. Is. Baffling.

And whats weirder...Once I fired up my computer and went to Credentials Manager again, the mysterious "virtualapp/didlogical" was back.

1. Why is my personal login connected to this weird "domain-like" service? My PW should be stored on my local machine NOT a Microsoft Server. This isn't a corporate environment where my personal login password is supposed to somehow be corporate knowledge.

2. How did this mysterious credential get recreated without my consent!!

Thoughts?!?

Hello!

I'm new to this forum, and joined because I got a problem that really sucks;
I was watching a movie one night, then when I'm going to bed I hit the sleep button on both my computers.
The day after I go away from home for some days, then I got back today. I pressed the Enter button on both computers, they start up without any problems.

But when I login to the one I use most of the time, I notice that Firefox wont work, there is no error, actually, it starts but nothing happens, its just blank, it says "Done" in the bottom left corner, but it is nothing in the Firefox window.

And when I close FF I get a error;

"Firefox has stopped working
1.Check online for a solution and close the program
2.Close the program"

If I chose the 1st option I get this message "The exception enknown software exception (0xc0000005) occurred in the application at location 0x02ff8cf0.

Click on OK to terminate the program."

Then I tried IE (32x), same thing there, so I try IE 64x, it worked.
Also I tried to restart my switch, ping some webpages, release / renew IP.
There was no difference. I also tried System Restore, but I could only restore to about 15 minutes back in time, wich was when I turned on my comuter today. And it didnt help.
Then I tried to start some games to see if it worked, first Peggle Deluxe, that worked fine. Then WoW, that did not work fine at all. The first thing that is wrong is that when I start WoW the launcher says "Cann... Read more

Have you checked if any updates that could've conflicted with this problem, were installed, prior to sleeping them?

I have a HDX16 laptop running windows 7. The battery is a year and a few months old, and yesterday was giving me at least 50 min of battery life. However today, it wont hold a charge at all and my computer shuts down completely whenever the power supply is interrupted for a millisecond. I ask because this is the second time a battery has suddenly stopped working on me and I am wondering if there is a reason for this. I tried to check the battery condition by hitting esc + f2 when my computer starts up, but there is no battery check option. Any explanation or advice would be greatly appreciated Thanks for your time.

Hey Aitchpk,  I'm sorry you're having a battery issue. I would suggest running a battery check using HP Support Assistant if you have it installed on your computer.  You could also try using this standalone Battery Check. Do you have any issues like this if you operate the computer without the battery and just have the power cord plugged in?

I'm running windows vista, with the standard realtek HD audio.
I was playing music and all the sudden it just..stopped playing. Everything is connected securely, and my speakers work if i use the front jack, but the rear jack has stopped working. I need that rear jack, and I'm wondering if its something that can be fixed by a simple driver download, or if i need to buy a brand new audio card.

Driver version: 6.0.1.5657

All the connections are secure

Problem began when Word 2000 loaded only the tool bar but no file text. Later when a text file was chosen to load the Word 2000 logo appeared but nothing more. Now when a text file is chosen a fatal exception message appears and then a message stating that resources are dangerously low. All other programs work flawlessly, e.g. Encarta, Quicken, internet access, MS Works, etc. Hard drive has 75% of capacity remaining. Memory is 128 mb.

Already installed is Norton SystemWorks 2003.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

A:Word 2000 won't load

Hi Len
Welcome to TSG

Search your pc for a file called "normal.dot" - delete it.
It is the standard Word template and it will recreate itself next launch (a mucked up 'normal' can cause all kinds of grief)

Failing that, can you reinstall Word (using Cd and repair or reinstall feature) ?

does this happen with any other apps?
does this happen with all Word shortcuts ... try launching from Word in the program folder (sometimes the shortcuts get messed up in Office)
can you launch Word by accessing an existing Word (.doc file) file?

For the past few weeks I've been having this problem, the internet works fine and suddenly stops opening pages and disconnects me from any game I'm playing but it still says that it's connected.

This happens maybe 10 times a day and when it does happen, I run the 'Diagnose' on LAN adapter and it always finds the problem in default gateway ''Default Gateway Not Available'' and it says 'Fixed' but it happens again all the time.

I tried setting up static IP address, updating network drivers, running the program called '6to4remover' and some other things that I found on this site and none of them helped, the problem still persists.

I also called my ISP and they said that everything is alright at their end and that the connection is working as intended.

Here's the ipconfig/all if it helps.

Hi,

If you are running Norton AntiVirus (NAV), or Norton SystemWorks, which incorporates NAV, there may be a conflict between the so-called Norton AntiVirus plug-in for Microsoft Office and another third party add-in that you have installed. Typically, you may get the error message: “Error VBE6.DLL”.

It is actually a very good idea to disable the NAV plug-in for Office in any case, as it confers no real benefit and it slows Word down. Click here for details of how to disable it.Click to expand...

Good luck,

Hi,

I'm writing a thesis that includes a cover page, table of contents, and abstract. I have set up the page numbering so that the cover page is page 0 and that does not appear on the cover page. So my table of contents begins at page 1, my abstract at page 2, and the body of my paper on page 3. I would like the ToC and abstract to be i and ii, respectively, so the paper starts on page 1. Is this possible?

Thanks,
Donnie

A:Word 2000- Page Numbering

Aye it is if you use section breaks. Add a section break after the page you want to have the roman numerals. Then go into your header and footer for section 2 and turn off "link to previous" on the toolbar. Now go to section 1's footer and change it to roman numerals via the "Format page number" icon on the toolbar.
