W540 BIOS update failed using Lenovo System Update

Q: W540 BIOS update failed using Lenovo System Update

Hello,I have a Lenovo Thinkpad W540 which is out of warranty. While using the Lenovo System Update utility to update the BIOS, the BIOS update failed, and now my W540 will no longer boot. Is there a way to restore the BIOS without replacing the system board? Is there a place where can I download the BIOS file (not only the upgrade utility)? Thank you!

Preferred Solution: W540 BIOS update failed using Lenovo System Update

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi plorengo, welcome to the forums,

I would like to suggest that you contact support once more, and again request a fix under warranty, if on this occasion you also receive no satisfaction you should then simply state that you are not satisfied and wish to register a complaint, the CSR will be able to do this for you.

Please ensure that you note the name of the CSR you speak to and also request a call number, the call number will possibly be of help at a later date.

Please also see the following post from Mark_Lenovo;

Please give it another go yourself before contacting Mark and please let us know how you get on.

I have, or had a laptop purchased 9 months ago, therefore under warranty. Yesterday the ThinkVantage System Update recommended a BIOS update. After the traditional recommendations about what should not shut down the computer, the laptop is reset and started with the update.

During execution, displayed on a screen command, a message "ERROR XXXX. Press any key to continue." After press the key the laptop was freezedy was completely blocked. After an hour without seeing response and no sign of life, I decided to turn it off to confirm the disaster. The laptop was dead.

The laptop began to beep and would not start. Before the panic generated by the situation, I searched the forums where I found several cases that refer to the same problem and the insinuation that makes LENOVO about the customer's responsibility to avoid recognizing the warranty.

I was not looking for a BIOS update, it was recommended by ThinkVantage System Update, the software executed it and damage the equipment.

Besides being a damage caused by the ThinkVantage System Update, the situation gets worse when the answer given by support insinuates that the customer turn off the computer, so it is a CID (Customer Induced Damage) and therefore the guarantee does not cover it. I do not understand how LENOVO may imply that the responsibility of the customer. Really disastrous.

In conclusion, if you are not needing to make a BIOS update, it is preferable to omit the BIOS update messages given to ThinkVantage System... Read more

I've been getting the "Thread Stuck in Driver" BSOD when playing games for several months now and have just been trying to ignore it. However, it's gotten too bad to be ignored any longer. I've been trying to download a BIOS update (as another thread on this topic suggested) but the System Update program refuses to download the BIOS update it says I need every single time. I can provide more info on my system if necessary.  Thanks for the help.

I purchased this used X250 (Product Number 20CMOOE5US) last week with Windows 10 Enterprise 64-bit Edition. I downloaded and installed Lenovo Vantage from Microsoft Store which is built-in in the Windows 10. The Lenovo System Update utility updated several components but failed with a BIOS update. The current BIOS version listed at the bottom of the Lenovo Vantage window is N10ET21W 0.21. I tried the stand-alone BIOS update version 1.27 downloaded from https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/ds102288, which also failed in the same way: the error message reads "OEM check failed from BIOS service. The utility process has not completed." I also noticed this weired label in the System Information for the processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-5### CPU @ 2.2GHz 2.19GHz. I guess a BIOS update would correct the processor info. But then how do I get BIOS updated? Please advise.

Hello, I recently bought a Lenovo z50-75. A few hours ago I wanted to update my bios. It was updating and suddenly the laptop restarted and there was just a black screen. I could hear the fans running, but the keyboard doesnt work because if I press Caps Lock the light won't turn on. I searched on google and there I found some solutions (with pressing keys, removing battery, etc.), but none seemed to work.I also found something about the CMOS battery. I opened my laptop but I couldn't seem to find it. What can I do now?  Best regards, Max

A:Lenovo Z50-75 bios update failed > black screen

Welcome to the Lenovo Community Max !

From viewing your model's Hardware Maintenance Manual there is a motherboard CMOS battery.  Unfortunately from the illustrations in the manual it would appear that the CMOS battery on the Z50-70 is soldered directly to the motherboard and can not be easily removed.  In that case try removing the main battery pack again and then press the power button for 60 seconds or longer.  Hopefully the CMOS battery will not be able to keep up with the power drain and will clear the CMOS.  Then reinstall the main battery pack and try powering it up.

For your reference, here is a link to the Hardware Maintenance Manual......

If that doesn't resolve the problem then I recommend you contact Lenovo Support for additional warranty service.

Problem solved toay,You need to open your machine. Find the cmos clear jumpers.Move the little cup from positions 1-2 to 2-3. Unplug Hard Disk. Close the machine. Insert a portable USB DVD to a usb port (have a copy of the new bios on the cd) and turn on your machine. It will boot from USB DVD drive and it will load the new bios. Machine will shut down after the new bios update. Open agin the machine, plug the Hard Disk and put back the jumpers to 1-2 position. Unplug USB DVD and it will boot from Hard Disk. That's all. IN OTHER WORDS: Bios update can be done if first you change the jumpers on motherboard.

Hi all. I have one month old W540. I received a notice on several recommended updates via Lenovo software, among them a BIOS update. Naivly enough, I accepted to install them all. All was installed successfully, but upon restart, my computer hangs with just a black screen. When power is pressed, it starts the keyboard light and turns it down. Nothing else. I tried draining the BIOS battery by removing battery and power and pressing the power button for 1 minute. No change. There are some threads out there that  explain how to use a crisis recovery disk. However, can someone help with BIOS type? I'd also rather try it with older version on BIOS, but I don't know where I can download from? I want to try the fix on my own, since I am currently working on a project not near to any service, I'll be here for three weeks more, and I really need my computer. Help please!

A:W540 brick after BIOS update

I should preface this, that I have not done this with a W540, but with other computers. I'm using BIOS 2.10 which as of today appears to the latest.   Dowload the install version from "Update from a Bootable CD".  If you are a geek, you could in theory make a USB booting disk and install that way. >  BIOS Update Bootable CD for Windows 8.1 (64-bit), 8 (64-bit), 7 (32-bit, 64-bit) - ThinkPad W540 Then change the BIOS to boot from the DVD/CD Drive (you can immediately hit the clealy labelled <F12> key to start the boot selection menu. It might by default go to the DVD drive if it cannot find the HD.  Do make sure your computer is connected to the mains.  Just check the light to make sure you are on AC. Follow the on screen directions, or it might start the BIOS update as a default.  When finished, remove the CD, reboot, and you should be good.  In any event, you will have to reset the BIOS to use the default OS drive. It may work without reseting, as normal BIOS check all drives until it finds a bootable device.  If the bootable device is not the primary choice in the BIOS, it will boot, but there will be a delay.  That can clearly be seen on the HD i/o light as the computer seeks.

Hello Community, The dedicated graphics chip on my W540 went missing after i had installed the latest Bios: GNET87WW (2.35).After several days of searching for a solution, I have found nothing besides negative opinions on Nvidia Optimus, and i need your help.I read that the Intel HD Graphics chip manages all of the display outputs and that the Nvidia chip 'streams' data to the Intel one to send out to a display. Proper installation of the Nvidia Optimus drivers would be to have uninstalled all graphics drivers and to install the latest official Lenovo video driver package (intel + NVidia). However, this did not work for me. The Intel HD graphics installed just fine, the NVidia could not detect the hardware and just stops. When i look into device manager, or 'System information for windows' or 'lspci' on Linux. I never see the Nvidia chip. There was an hidden entry in the device management for the NVidia chip, but it had an error 45 which meant it had been removed from the system. Uninstalling that device and searching for new hardware did not bring anything at all. On other W540 systems there is an entry in 'lspci' with the following information:01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GK107GLM [Quadro K1100M] (rev a1)On my system this is missing. Only the GK107 HDMI audio controller is present but serves no function without the GPU (and driver). Of course, there are options available in the BIOS, I tried different power plans (balanced an... Hi everyone, I have a W540 running win8.1pro since mid-2014 and clean installed win10pro with a new SSD in mid-2016. It worked like a charm until the recent 1709 update, after which graphic stutters and cursor hangs occur every now and then. I wonder if anyone here experiences similar issues, even with other intel+nvidia thinkpad? And if any, is Lenovo aware of it or working on a solution? Here are the symptoms with my W540 after 1709: In file explorer, cursor always freezes(spinning) for 1-2 seconds when I right click on ANY .exe file if I enable NVIDIA's "Run with graphic processor" in context menu. Disable "Run with graphic processor" in context menu does relieve it.Also in file explorer, If click on a .zip file to extract with "Compressed Folder Tools"(don't need to actually extract), then even I left click ANY .exe file will cause cursor spinning for 1-2 seconds, and so does navigating forward/backward, click on certain files and folders. Reopen the file explorer the problem seems to disappear for once.Flickering animations occur when I maximize/restore/stretch certain desktop and UWP windows (file explorer, IE, chrome, mail app, etc., see gif attached). Dragging file explorer between monitors stutters even worse. I have all the updated drivers installed according to Lenovo's official site: https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-w-series-laptops/thinkpad-....BTW, the System Update is not always able to find cert... I googled the issue and found that this could mean my system reserved partition is full and indeed that is what I found. My C: drive is a 500 GB SSD but the system partition is only 100 MB of which only 3 MB is free.

MS web page has a long convoluted command line "fix" for this (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3086249) but I was wondering why I couldn't just "shrink" the main C: drive partition and then "extend" the system partition using diskmgmt.msc.

Or is there a better way?

Hello Ray Lo,

Yes, potentially you can do this... But I would suggest backup of your SSD, before you try to do anything as such... WRT shrinking and moving partitions! Just in case!

One extra step enforcing security does no hurt, does it?

I am receiving this message when I run sp76205: The system BIOS update file (c:\SWSetup\SP76205\hpqflash\ROM.CAB) is missing or corrupt. The system BIOS will not be updated." SP76205 was just released in June 2016 and I noticed other user are experiencing the same issue with it. Please provide a fix BIOS update or explain how to run this current update...

Hello, In our organization we have a VPN client that is sensative to driver versions.  We have noticed Lenovo System Update is only updating the Lenovo T470 Wireless-AC 8265 drivers to a certain point and has stopped.  That we could tell there did seem to be a problem as previously there was a rapid succession of updates for our T470's and the wireless NICs to a certain point.T470 - 20HES09L00 Would it be possible to have this driver updated? 2018/09/03 - v20.70.3.3 - Lenovo2019/03/06 - v20.120.1.1 - Intel  Thank you,Tony H.

A:Lenovo T470 - Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 8265 - Lenovo System Update - Wireless AC Driver Update

I noticed this apparent divergence on my T480, so I manually installed thev20.120.1.1 driver direct from the  Intel site. When it got done installing, Device manager (Windows 10 Pro 64-bit) reported that I STILL was using the same version as offered by Lenovo:  v20.70.3.3 - Lenovo
