(Solved) AD-AWARE and SPYBOT acting strangely.

Q: (Solved) AD-AWARE and SPYBOT acting strangely.

Today I have been attempting to run both SPYBOT S&D and AD-Aware6.... and I am just having some problems. This is strange... because I have NEVER had any problems with either one of them... and have ran them at least once or twice a month.

Here's what is happening.

AD-Aware6... I will do the normal DEEP SCAN, and it will quickly find 66 registry keys and continue to scan.... until it gets to Windows COOKIES.... and then it will hang, and I have to hit CNTRL-ALT-DELETE to exit.

I have tried rebooting several times, repairing the program, even uninstalling/reinstalling twice. I updated the program as well.

With SPYBOT S&D... I will do a search for "updates"... it will find about 3 of them, and when I go to DOWNLOAD UPDATES... it will just hang..... and do nothing, again causing me to CNTRL-ALT-DEL to exit. I uninstalled this and reinstalled as well.

Again... these programs have been working great for months, and today, they are both giving me fits.... Any ideas what may be happening here? Possible solutions?

Thanks in advance

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a custom-built machine running Windows 7 home premium. Two SATA drives, 4G memory, excellent video card, etc.
Two nights ago, I suddenly noticed that my E: drive (data drive) had "vanished;" it was nowhere to be seen. All files from that drive would not open; they'd give me the message about the link referring to something that was not there, etc.

I shut down but was unable to reboot. The message on the screen was "invalid system disk." I tried repeatedly to reboot; I even tried my recovery disk. Nothing doing. I took it to the guy who built it (two years ago), and he found some files corrupted or something, and got it booting again.

I took it home, and all ll seemed well at first, then once again I noticed that the E: drive had vanished. The E: drive did not show up in My Computer or Windows Explorer or anywhere.

I tried rebooting, but the computer would not reboot. It kept saying "invalid system disk." Well, the first time I realized I still had the recovery disk in there, so I took it out, and rebooted. Same message. I did this about five times to no avail. Wouldn't even let me in BIOS.

Finally, out of the blue, it just decided to boot up. E: drive was back.

I started working again, but then after about 5 minutes, the machine just shut off. I rebooted, got the "invalid system disk," and then tried to restart about three times. The last time it booted, and stayed ok for awhile. I left it on last night just ... Read more

I have been using this computer for a while now with little problems. Today when I booted up though, i have encounted vista acting oddly. I first noticed it when i opened firefox, links and buttons would cause the whole computer to lag for a few seconds. Even opening Notepad took it about 5 seconds. When i click a different window in the task bar, instead of changing to it, it flashes orange, then I must click it another 2 times to get it to change to it. On top of all that, I tried opening task manager to see if there was a program open taking alot of CPU to find that it doesn't open. Pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL opens the menu, but when i choose to open task manager, the green graph appears in the corner, but i can't see it on screen. CTRL+SHIFT+ESC does the same thing. The graph is flashing alot but when i hover over it, it says CPU Usage: 0%. Right-Clicking it took 5 seconds or more to open the menu which instantly became non-respnsive and i can't get rid of it. here are my System Specs, i hope you guys can help!

I recently helped a friend of mine fix her computer from a very persistent malware attack, but some of the fixes or the malware itself may have damaged some of her universal browser settings, as all of them are acting strangely in some form or another now. My guess is the malware did some damage as it was communicating with a website to install nasties on her computer.

For reference that thread can be viewed here.

In a nutshell, I didn't get the specifics but Google Chrome was "inop" and she had to uninstall it. Reinstalling didn't fix the problem.

Firefox refuses to allow her to upload files to sites such as Photobucket and the like.

IE keeps giving her a "cannot display page" warning.

I am familiar with these issues on occasion with my 64-bit version of XP, but she is running a 32-bit version of the same platform.

I have a few possible solutions to work with but I really would like to hear from other people on this as well.

Right now, doing a restore point to a time before the malware attack to see how that works. Will try a few other ideas if it doesn't and post them all here with the results so someone else might make use of them in the future if they should have this problem. Will mark as solved and indicate what worked for future reference.

Thanks for your help.

Update: Using restore points doesn't work. It's doing the same thing that it did when the malware was partially disabled on her computer (allowing access to s... Read more

Earlier today, my CD drive stopped working, no CDs could be read. This happens sometimes, and a reboot always fixed it, but this time, a reboot made it worse. After rebooting, the Dell logo came up, the progress bar finished, and then it gave me a BIOS error.

'Secondary hard drive 0 not found. Press F1 to continue, F2 for setup.'

I clicked F2, and my CD drive wasn't listed. I'm able to load Windows just fine, but Windows doesn't recognize my CD drive, and my CD drive keeps spinning the CD inside it while the light on it is constantly on. How can I fix this?

My CD drive is a regular CD drive, not a CD-RW or a DVD or a DVD-RW or a CD-R.

A:Solved: CD drive acting strangely

If the drive is not IDed in the bios, you have a hardware problem; ie failed drive, bad cable, etc.

Start by reseating all connections for the drive both power and data cable. If this does not fix the problem, then use a new data cable. Still does not work, replace the drive.

A:Solved: Ad-aware/Spybot

Hi, You may run into the problem of having too old a build of one or the other programs...the best way to do it would be to install the newest of each program, and update then.

You would need to uninstall the older copies if any are installed on that pc you are fixing....

SpyBot and AdAware had older versions, you should uninstall ADAware 6 or SpyBot 1.3- if the bad pc has those installed now! they will not help. The latest versions are AAW SE personal edition 1.06

and SpyBot 1.4

Install the newer copies you download now and burn to disc and add the latest update files to each!

If they do have these newest versions of SB and AAW...just add the reference files to each as below.

Yes, you can manually update those programs from here:

Go to this for SpyBot> http://majorgeeks.com/Spybot_Search_and_Destroy_Detection_Update_d3957.html

Ad-Aware SE:

It shows you how to do each one.

You can post the Hijackthis log here if you want to verify that something should be done before using any other tools like AAW or SpyBot...sometimes there are things to do before using those!

I have used Spybot and Ad-Aware. Some things I am not sure if I should fix or leave them alone. For example, in Spybot it tells you that everything in red should be fixed. Some programs I see in red are things associated with programs like gator , mediaplayer , etc. that I use. Should I just let Spybot fix these known programs along with all the other stuff and on reboot these legitimate program associations will be replaced? The same thing with Ad-Aware, should I let it fix all that it finds and on reboot all necessary things will return?

For the past couple of weeks my PC has been acting incredibly weird and I believe it is related to Windows 7 however I am not completely sure. The issues I am encountering are sometimes severe like blue screens giving error messages like Memory_Management or IRQL_Not_Less_Or_Equal and sometimes it is weird errors like Windows Explorer randomly crashing or Windows Search Indexer crashing. Other errors include Windows Defender crashing or programs not being able to start, claiming they are not installed correctly but then when I restart my PC the programs start fine. The connection I notice though between all these issues is that when I get one of the error messages like "Windows Defender has stopped working" or "Windows Explorer has stopped working" I always get these three details when I click on more details in the error window:
So yeah that is the gist of my issue. Something is clearly wrong with my Windows 7 or PC itself and I am not sure what. I have tried virus scans, sfc/scannow scans, as well a... Read more

I had just logged onto the Internet today when a Norton dialog box popped up saying something about my NAV2005 having an error that requires that I uninstall and reinstall NAV to fix.

The box kept popping up repeatedly, so I tried to open NAV from the taskbar icon. It wouldn't, so I tried the Start Menu, which did work. Attempts to run Live Update failed with the message "Unable to connect to LiveUpdate server."

I went to the Symantec site and used their automatic diagnostic tool, which came back saying that the program's Scheduling Agent was disabled and that I'd need to go into the system config and enable it. In msconfig there were two Scheduling agents, both titled mstask.exe, one checked, the other not. I checked both and rebooted. NAV now launches from the taskbar, but LiveUpdate still won't connect.

Is this a hijack attempt or a legitimate NAV glitch?

When I click on an inbox message, a reply window or a copy of the message in a new window pops up at the same time. This happens not every time, but intermittently.

Also, periodically when I delete messages (using the delete button), it will delete the selected message, plus the one beneath it.

I regularly delete the Deleted Items file and keep the Sent File pretty clean, and recenly I went through my Inbox and moved any big files that I want to save to a folder on the hard drive.

Ok here's what happened. Been on the computer a few minutes just browsing the net when I hear a series of rapid beeps, coming from my computer. Thinking somthing had gone tits up I quickly shut the computer down and restarted.

On reboot I got the Windows check disk program appear and it said it was checking my drives for 'consistency'. As it was checking I noticed it picking up and fixing quite a lot of errors which got me worried.

The it restarted and I was back in WIndows as normal, but all of a sudden for no reason the Keyboard switched off. I took out the keyboard connector gave it a blow and rewconnected it to the back of my PC. The keyboard came back to life but as that happened the mouse switched itself off.

I took out the mouse and reconnected it to the mouse port but it was till dead, i then took off the adapter and plugged it into the USB port and it works.

Now everything seems to be working apart from the Keyboard which jerks when holding the backpace and deleting large amounts of text, beforte it used to smoothly delete everything now it stops and starts after every space.

My specs are:

P4 2.4 ghz (HT Enabled)
512 DDR PC2700
GeForce4 Ti 4200
Seagate Barracuda 80gb SATA
SB Live 5.1 Digital
Abit A17 Mobo
Windows XP pro
Chieftec 360w PSU

Can anyone tell me what happened to my PC?

I built it myself so Im worried I screwed somthing up on it, its been working fine for 2 months though.

Thanks for any replies.

If I have a number of windows open (three or four, say), when I go to access the menu to choose one to look at, the menu pops up, then immediately drops down again and when I manage to click on the page I want, it doesn't access it. usually I have to click on it two or three times to get it to come up.

Oddly, the same behavior has now moved over to Word (plus, if I cut and paste material from another Word document, it pastes twice and now it's started to change the original font). In another post I reported that OE7 is acting weird, too--when I click on a message in the Inbox, it brings up a separate copy of the same message in a new window or if I reply to a message, it brings up duplicates of the reply windows.

Any ideas?

My net has been weird lately. It's kinda hard to explain, but I'll give it a try.

About a week ago when my parents came into town I started noticing some strange lag spikes. I didn't think much of them at the time, as I assumed my brother was just downloading something. A couple days later I noticed that I could no longer access the computers on the local network (I don't check the network very often). I could see them, I just couldn't actually access them. That was bad enough as is, then I noticed something else. Whenever I would download something, the download would hang and never complete. The download would stop at anywhere from 200k to a few megabytes. I'm still able to download on bittorrent just fine, but that's probably due to the fact that they split the download into small pieces. As I mentioned earlier, this effects gaming as well. It comes in the form of long painful lag spikes that happen frequently.

Misc info:
1. 3 of the computers are running Win2k. The 4th computer (which came on the network roughly the same time as we started having problems) runs Win98. I'm not sure if it was before or after, but it was around that time.
2. Linksys router (wired) roughly 5 yrs old.
a. I've bought 2 new routers. Both had the same network problem. Neither of the new ones could get an IP from the modem.

Uusally I have to unlpug and replug my router every week becuase it quits working (Timeouts for web sites, etc.) So I did this earlier today and everything seemed to work fine but I am now unable to access its functions (by typing its IP address and using a login/pass)
Also, using ipconfig, it now shows me my ISP and the real ip address from our ISP rather than that the router gives me. The same thing shows up on another pc connected to it. The router is a linksys wirelss-g model WRT54G.
Anyone care to explain what's going on here?

Edit: I took a closer look at the ip address it gives me and its slightly different on the two systems, but its still not the 192.168.... stuff that the router gives out.

I have a custom built laptop, it is only two years old and has been working on top speed forever. Recently however, I've noted a few strange things.
First of all, there is my Windows theme. It was switched to classic windows theme and won't revert back to the Aero. Another problem is my K9 Web Protection, which Iobit Malware Fighter claims to be a threat called
Misleading.FakeAV, REG, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\bckd&ImagePath, 2014883
Which I manually deleted, then freshly re installed a new downloaded version of K9. But I still receive it as a threat.
Another problem is gaming, which I have never had a problem with. Time to time I'll kicked off the clients. I've been trying to play on the LOWEST possible graphical settings. Which is strange because my laptop was built for gaming...
The final problem I noticed was my Windows active and inactive bars. They've been casually flickering time to time. Also even when there is only one window open.
I've tried restoring my system, but the problems persists. I'm thinking I am infected. Is there a possible solution?
Here's my computer's specs:

I'm using XP Sp2 and my PC has USB 2.0 ports. I had no problem with my usb ports until yesterday. I plugged a USB extension port to one of my USB port. Windows found a new device (usb root hub) and I plugged my usb pen drive to one of the extension port. But windows did not show any devices plugged in. I thought that may be the extension port is not right and I unplugged the hub. Then I plugged in my pendrive to one of my usb port. Windows recognizes the pendrive but a msg pops up saying "this device may work well if plugged into a high speed port"(something like that). Then I plugged the pendrive in my laptop(runs on Vista) and I get the same msg. What's wrong with my usb ports? They used to work fine before. Today I plugged in my pen drive to my pc and I get a msg saying usb device not recognized!!!! All the ports pops up this msg and one of the port doesn't recognize any device not even my printer!!

How can I fix this problem? What could be the problem?
I have checked Device manager and there is a Enhanced Usb controller.

p.s. Usb extension port is for usb 1.1

I'm having a pig of a time connecting to my wireless router. It mostly connects fine, but suddenly the connection will drop out despite XP saying it is still connected. When I doubleclick the wireless icon to bring up the Wireless Network Connection Status box, it can show the signal fluxuating from two bars to four, the speed jumping anywhere from 1Mbps to 54Mbps and the name of the network keeps vanishing and reappearing as though it's constantly losing the connection. None of these things even seem connected; the signal can be great, but the speed drops, or vice versa. Diconnecting then reconnecting solves it, at least until it happens again. My laptop is less than ten metres from the router, and no-one else in the house seems to have these problems. I've both updated and rolled back my drivers and had a defrag. Any suggestions? If this is at all related to any of the other current topics being discussed, be sure to point me to the right one.

Okay, I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 running Vista, and suddenly I cannot use the DVD drive. I put a disk in it used to be able to read just fine, and now it show's me file sizes of 44 bytes for the MP3 files on it, and will not do anything with the files, like play them or show the names of the files. I'm quite sure those files are far larger than 44 bytes, and sometimes it will not even list the files, just just hangs up and won't even list them, but when it does the file sizes are all the same, 44 bytes, which cannot be true.

So, do I have some virus or malware that might be causing the problem, or do I have a hardware issue?

For reasons I can not figure out when i attempt to open itunes it 1) takes a very long time to open (over 10 minutes usually) 2) it opens but is unresponsive unless it is the only thing open on my desktop and 3) it immediately freezes when it detects my ipod classic. I have started to like itunes less and less over time but i still fins it quite useful when it works properly. If any one can help solve these strange issues which did not start up until recently it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

A:Itunes acting very strangely

Depending on what version you currently have you can always try uninstalling and either upgrading or downgrading accordingly. OldVersion.com has old iTunes versions that may work for you. Another thought would be to go to another program like WinAmp. It doesn't have a store (to my knowledge) like iTunes does, so if you use that feature of iTunes you're kind of out of luck. But they have recently improved their support for iPods a lot. Most iPod devices are found automatically without the need for plugins.

Hey, I recently encountered a pretty big virus on my computer which rendered it pretty much useless. After extensive removal of malware using Spyware Doctor, I think I got the worst of it out of the way, but it seems ot have left my comptuer pretty badly damaged.

Mcafee AntiVirus wouldn't let me do anything, not even scan my computer as there was always a different error, and even when I installed the free AVG antivirus, that just seemed to hang.

My computer also does not recognise external flash drives like my 4GB memory stick which works fine in my other computer. I also seem to be getting a lot more blue screens than I use to which I can't seem to sort out. I have an XP CD at hand, but I don't really know how to reinstall windows using it, plus, it's a serive pack 1 CD and my computer has Serivce Pack 3. Below is my log, please help. Thanks.

Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.

Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

I have some strange behavior exhibited by my LiteOn DVD+/-RW drive (SHW-160P6S, current firmware). For whatever reason it suddenly is causing my system to go to a black screen and reboot whenever I insert a rewriteable DVD, either + or -. The only thing that I recall changing on my system is a recent Java update.

System configuration: EPoX 9NPA+Ultra board (nForce4 Ultra chipset), Athlon64 4000+ S939, 2GB PC3200 (4x512MB), Leadtek PCIex nVidia 6600GT 128MB video, Seagate 250GB SATA 7200RPM, BenQ 16x DVD-ROM, LIteOn DVD+/-RW (BenQ on primary master, LiteOn on secondary master), Windows XP Pro SP2 (fully updated/patched), Nero Express, InCD

Long story short, I did a lot of troubleshooting: swapped out two different drives, tried the drive on another system, different cables, tried both optical drives as master/slave on primary and secondary channels, tried opticals on Promise IDE controller, all to no avail. I restored my system from a month old Acronis TrueImage backup, and issue went away. However, within a couple days (likely due to system updates), the issue resurfaced.

I finally threw in the towel and did a clean Windows XP install. Guess what, the DVD+/-RW drive issue is still with me. I can put in a blank DVD+ or - R disc, and all is well. It will burn w/o issue, and read. It will read other burned DVD's. But, just like before, almost immediately upon accessing a rewriteable DVD the system goes to black screen and reboots.

Any though... Read more

I'm messing around with this motherboard my dad had RMA'd to see if I can turn it into a usuable computer.

Works fine but the one thing that's got me perplexed is the DVD drives plugged into it.

The DVD writer seems to "read when it wants to", which is really weird. A lot of the time, it just won't read anything but sometimes it does read discs (I even burnt a disc using it). The drive is there in Windows Explorer and the BIOS also catches it but I can't get it to boot from the DVD drive (but it DID boot once so I managed to install Windows from it). In Windows I put discs in and it makes no attempt to read them...unless it suddenly WANTS to read them and then does.

Does this make any sense? A drive almost literally reading discs when it feels like it wants to read them.

The motherboard is an ASUS P5N-E SLI board.

Hi, Welcome to TSG!!

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Hi there. Earlier tonight, my computer suddenly turned itself off, and when I restarted it, a message came up about components of ActiveShield (which is part of my mcafee anti-virus software) being missing or not installing properly, and I can't enable it. I restarted my computer, a blue screen came up saying that hardware was missing or something, so I restarted yet again, and this time a black screen came up (the one that comes up before you enter safe mode) and asked me if I wanted to go into safe mode or start at the last good configuration. Currently, there is still the weird message from Mcafee. Please look at my log and tell if there's any problems. Some basic information before I continue: OS is Windows XP SP2, anti-virus is AVG Free, and my firewall is Comodo Pro. Additionally, I have Malware Bytes as anti-malware.This is a continuation of an unanswered thread I posted on Aug 7th. Since then, my problems have changed, so the old thread has been deleted. Here's a brief recap of that thread: I posted about a potential malware infection on my computer. It basically wiped out my Comodo Firewall, shutting down every part of it, and redirected me to sites like shopica.com when I tried to do a search on Google. When I rebooted my computer, my internet access was gone (as in I wasn't connected at all), and when I clicked on My Network Places to try and reconnect, I was presented with a window stating my computer would shut down because the "DCOM Service Process Launcher Terminated Unexpectedly." When I scanned my computer for malware using AVG Free's scanner and Malware Bytes, there was nothing. Suspecting MSblaster, I transferred over a program (from Symantec) that found and rooted out that specific virus, but it too found nothing. I have tried to go back to the Last Known Good Configuration, but the problem remains. That was basically my situation as of Aug 7th.Situation as of now: Since then, I've discovered additional problems on my computer. It refuses to read CDs anymore or flash drives. That combined with no internet access has made transferring anything between computers to be impossible. I ha... Read more

I have spent the past week battling a trojan and as of last night I thought everything was OK. This morning I installed a few more things to make sure I was up to date on everything security-wise. I then ran two scans with HijackThis - one as is and then one after renaming it to see if it would catch anything else. On the second scan, it did find two entries, C: Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\reader_sl.exe and C: Windows\system32\wuauclt.exe. I did a search and found that these files were not malicious.

The trouble started when I uninstalled Adobe Reader 7 and tried to install Adobe Reader 9. It went through the whole installation process adding a third party Service Pack (Hyperion VIA) and then I rebooted but there was no sign of it ever being installed. I tried again and it was the same thing. When I searched for "adobe" using the new Windows Search 4.0 that I just installed the search results were all screwed up. In fact it listed two items that could not be previewed and they were the same two items that HiJackThis found in the second scan. I uninstalled Windows Search and after rebooting, my taskbar shortcut icons disappeared! So then I tried to do a System Restore from two days ago and it wouldn't let me (I had to disable this on the 2nd to do the virus scan so that's the earliest restore point I could try).
