Main Computer Sending data but wireless computer not receiving data or internet

Q: Main Computer Sending data but wireless computer not receiving data or internet

I have had this problem many times before, when i hook up xbox and play xbox live our internet connection gets messed up and doesnt work. I set a restore point before i played the last time and when the internet stopped working i restored it to the point and it started working again on our main computer where the router is, but my computer in my room which is wireless is not working anymore. I formatted my hard drive on that computer hoping that it would fix the problem but it didnt. I have tried to get it working and have had no luck. The connection says that it is good but the internet does not work at all. It says "Cannot Find Server" when i try to get on internet explorer. The main computer is sending information but mine is not receiving the info.

Help me please

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hey people,

Noticed my connection has slowed down over the last few days.
Did a Avast virus scan yesterday, Spybot and Adware the day before and came up with nothing.
I've noticed little black squares blotching out logos and sometimes trailing off the mouse pointer. (not very often, about 3 times in the last week)
Also notice my HD whurrs into action if i leave the PC alone for a few mins. It stops if i open a folder (i have to do this cos it annoys me!)

Just checed my connection data by right clicking the network tray icon and it says:

84,210 packets sent and 80,075 packets received. I dont think that is right.
Zone alarm isnt flashing for sending data.

TIA
Jack

Everything seemed fine until the Network Support office called and demanded that the computer be removed from the network immediately. I have eliminated any trace of suspicious files and registry entries all to no avail. When I last enabled the network adapter with no programs open, in 59 seconds it received over 5,000,000 bytes and sent more than 500,000.

The root of the problem seems to be coming from the file C:\HAHAl\bok.exe since it has regenerated itself after removing it at a DOS prompt in Safe Mode. I don't see any processes out of the ordinary using SysInternals System Explorer.

To me, reimaging for problems like this is like buying a new house when the one you are in needs a heating problem fixed.

When my internet connection is enabled, I am sending/receiving a high volume of data (8-9x that of similar machines with similar network connections) thru the connection, even with no programs running. There are two machines on this Linksys router, one laptop and one desktop and this only occurs on the desktop. I am running Windows XP SP2 and run AVG daily updates and scans and AdAware and Spybot S&D weekly with no virus/spyware/malware found. My broadband provider has limits on band width use and has recently warned me of my increased bandwidth usage, primarily upload. Otherwise I would not have been aware of this. The quick fix has been to enable the connection only when needed. But I am concerned that this might be something more sinister. Any input you may have would be much appreciated.

Dear all,

My PC has WindowsXP SP3 installed with norton antivirus and from the last four days, I am noticing, my pc is constantly sending & receiving data online without any internet browsing, chatting, gaming online, without any update related to any software including windows update - my windows automatic update setting is: Notify me but don't automatically download or install them.

The Local Area Connection icon at the right side bottom corner on the taskbar is constantly lightening (Sending & Receiving Data). The internet modem's DSL Light and Ethernet Light is also blinking continuously. I am sure that something is happening to my pc online, but the user of my pc is not doing anything online. No software/update or file is downloading. I am surprised what's happening.

Is there any spyware or malware on my pc?

Please help.

Thanks & Best Regards

A:My PC is constantly sending & receiving data online without any work or update.

Your computer will always send data back and forth from your computer to ISP etc, if it's connected to the internet. There are probably other programs installed which automatically check for updates or communicate with servers online in the background - just like Windows update does or an instant messaging program.

The only way to tell if you have spyware on your computer is to run antispyware or virus programs. We can't help you with that in this part of the forum. The virus specialists would have to help you here --> NEW INSTRUCTIONS - Read This Before Posting For Malware Removal Help - Tech Support Forum

my "network connected" icon (from TI broadband modem) tells me how many Kb are being sent and how many being received.

When Microsoft or Norton update me automatically, there's lots of bytes transferred and my computer slows down or wont do anything else temporarily.

My question is, how can I tell WHERE data is being downloaded/uploaded to/from?

Obviously, Microsoft and Norton are OK, but suppose it was someone nasty! Is there a way of seeing where the data is coming from/going to or if it's using a programme I didnt know about on my computer (spyware, say) as easily as seeing the actual numbers of Kb that my little network-connected icon tells me?

Thanks

well hi guys! answering my own question - in case other people should need the answer!

I've found that in Norton Internet Security, I can go to "statistics" - "view logs" - "web history" and it brings up (I think!) a list of sites that have connected to the computer.

anyone know of any method within Windows itself, or other source not involving a paid-for installed programme?

a hub is just an electronic junction box; you need a router and to let it provide DHCP services to both systems.

on both systems
click run and enter
cmd /k ipconfig all

you must see
..identical DNS and GATWAY addresses
..but UNIQUE ip addresses
...(which a hub can not provide )

Hi there,

Was wondering if anyone could help me out. I'm experiencing an extremely slow internet connection. My internet connection is a Starband 480 (higher bandwidth satellite than the 360). Now the satellite has it's own problems but what's concerning me is that I've noticed is my upload bandwidth.

I use NetPerSec to monitor the traffic on my computer. In the past week or so, I've noticed that every now and then something is sending over 1 MBits/sec from my computer. I can close all the visible programs and it still occurs. Unfortuantely, there is no pattern as to when it happens.

I've run Spyblaster and Spybot with updates as of yesterday (2/16/04) and everything is good according to them.

Below is the output file of Hijack This. If anyone has any hints, they would be most appreciated!!

Hello mikey086,

Please copy this page to Notepad since you will not have any browsers open while you are carrying out these instructions. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

You don't appear to have an Anti-Virus installed. I do see the set up file for McAfee in your temp folder, but it doesn't appear to be installed. If you are in need of an Anti-Virus, please download and install the following free program:

Please download AVG Freeat Grisoft. Scroll down the page a bit for install link. Install it and make sure to check for updates.

Download CleanUp! (Alternate Link if main link doesn't work) and install it. Do not run it yet.

Download LSPFix.exe. We may need it later.

Download CWShredder and run it. Click on 'I Agree' button if you agree and check for updates. Click on 'Fix' (it will automatically fix anything it finds for you) and then click OK. If it asks if you want to delete a certain random file, choose No and post that filename here. Let it finish the scan and then hit Next and Exit.

I have dial up, and before the browser is activated my send/receive icon is lit up. When I open the send/receive icon it's sending and receiving something. I never had this problem before. I realize that the lite will come on talking to my ISP, but not continiously. I use Spybot Search and Destroy, Ad Aware SE Personal, Norton's Anti Virus and Counter Spy. All are updated daily (or at least checked for updates daily. Counter Spy and Norton's are Active and enabled. I'll do a scan with ad aware and spybot before shutting down. Nothing is being detected. I let it run for about an hour, in that time 24 megs were received and 1 meg was send. God knows what was received/downloaded or SENT. Any Suggestions as to what is happening. I really get bugged seeing that send/receive icon blinking away and I'm not doing anything.

I haven't been able to find any information concerning this and I was hoping someone could help me. I've found posts and information on problems with not receiving packets but not with not sending packets. I'm connecting through a RCA broadband modem with Roadrunner cable service and a 3COM Etherlink NIC. When I start my computer, it never sends packets. I have to pull out the ethernet cable and replug it to reconnect. After a few tries, it'll connect. Occasionally my computer stops sending packets and I disconnect and I'll have to reconnect by unplugging and replugging the cable. What's the problem?

A:Computer receiving packets but not sending

that happened to me twice. my solution has always been to turn off both the modem and my router by disconnecting the power cable and then unpluging all connections. then i turn on my modem....after that is on and has a connection.........start the router....then finally restart of pc and plugging in the ethernet cable into the computer.

or just basically restarting everything

I couldn't find any drivers for windows 7 but I assumed that the compatibility would not be an issue. I tried to pinging google.com on cmd, and it told me that it timed out. Please help me out!! To make things simple, I bought a wireless router so they could have internet access. My main computer with DSL is here in my room, and on the other side of the house is their setup, running off of a wireless connection to my computer.

How can I disconnect their access connection from here in my room, without it screwing up my own setup? Thanks in advance!

While I'm at it, can I interact with the other computer in any way through this setup other than their simply using the same connection as me?

Hello all,
I'd appreciate any suggestions on this problem, I consider myself an intermediate computer user but networking isn't my best subject - thanks in advance for any help.

For the last 2 weeks or so I have noticed that my internet connection has been sending out too much data compared to what is received, especially since I am not uploading at all (to my knowledge). I also noticed that my connection seems to be sending out all the data that comes in like a relay or loop, at the moment the packets sent/received: 38,836/32,701. It seems to me that 6,000 sent would be about right, and the extra sent is actually my received traffic being sent somewhere.

Obviously that's a worry to me so I checked all the usual things like adware, virus, trojan, registry/startup options... no luck with that. I then installed ZoneAlarm Anti-spyware because it can supposedly monitor outgoing traffic from all programs. I haven't found anything suspicious still and the ZoneAlarm traffic monitor doesn't seem to notice all of the outgoing traffic.

After all that i'm thinking maybe it's a network configuration problem (maybe it's some kind of 'loop traffic' so ZA doesn't worry about it?), even though I don't believe I messed around with any settings before this started happening. Sorry for the long post but as you can see I am all out of ideas on this.

It's gone up even more!EDIT 2: Malwarebytes has come up clean. Scanning with Avast now.
I plan on asking my brother if he's been downloading anything when he wakes up. He probably won't be honest with me but whatever.EDIT 3: More and more and more. I really don't get this.EDIT 4: The Avast quick scan came up clean, with two false positives. I know what these two files are, they're RKill disguised under another name that I downloaded from here for when I had the Windows Recovery Virus.EDIT 5: Sorry for so many edits, I just figured these were important.
It's still climbing, hmmmm...
I'm running a scan with Spybot at the moment as well.EDIT 6: Spybot came up clean. Very weird.
This is just crazy :/ There must be something up.

A:Receiving a lot of data? Am I compromised?

I have my doubts about your iexplorer, in downloads, that is, being a false positive.  Usually the IE, when downloaded is in the form of:
IE11-Windows6.1-x86-en-us.exe
When downloaded from the download area, or
AMD64-en-ie7-windowsserver2003.windowsxp-kb2360131-x64-enu_ffdcf70c5e00750f5baa894607f7f332ff7f1d4f.exe
When downloaded from the Microsoft Update Catalog.
The above are only examples of the filenames.  As I indicated, the IExplorer.exe in your downloads is probably a problem file.
As for the "dds(1).scr" file, the only "dds" file I could find on bleeping computer was "dds.com", so that makes me question that one also!
Best of luck.

Hi,

I found several similar threads from 2007 or so, but none of those answers quite worked for me.

We are a business with a wired network and a Verizon wireless router that is rarely used. My MacBook Air was connected to it earlier this morning. I went to connect a Compaq laptop and struggled to get the thing connected. Dynamic IP results in a 169.254.xxx IP address, but when I fed it the IP address that my MacBook pulled earlier, it says it has a "Very Strong" connection. IE loads a cached Google page, but for any web address, it says "can;t browse while offline". I'm sending, but not receiving packets. I haven't used a PC since I worked in tech support 10 years ago, so I'm pretty rusty on Windows support. Thanks for any help!

I have a Atheros AR5006EXS Wireless Network Adapter. When I am connected through this the sent packets go crazy. When I am hard wired things go back to normal. I have run all virus, malware, spyware programs and seem to have a clean system.

From reading other forums it appears removing the adapter and reinstalling would help. I have tried uninstalling the adapters from the device manager but this has not helped. I cannot physically remove the adapter because it is intergrated. I have a Fujitsu P1610 / convertible laptop.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Thanks

Welcome to TechGuy Forum.

Which version of Windows are on the computer?
RIGHT click "computer" or "my computer".
Left click "properties".

HOW did you try to remove / uninstall your network device?
Create a system restore point. The steps vary, depending upon which version of Windows you are using.
For XP:
start > programs / all programs > accessories > system tools > system restore .
Create a restore point.

For Vista, you need to go to system protection.

RIGHT click "computer" / "my computer"
Left click "manage"
Maximize the screen.
On the left, left click "device manager".
On the right, look for "network adapters".
If there is a "+" to the left, left click the "+", which will turn into a "-" sign.

When the computer starts up, it goes through a POST, power on self test, during which time a notice is often displayed, informing you that you can enter "setup" by pressing a key; F2, F10, Del, Esc, or some other key; or a keystroke combination. You may need to check with the manufacturer of your computer to find out how to do that.

I have had a MSI Wind U100 for a while now and have been plagued by a number of wireless problems... but the latest one has me baffled. Usually they can be solved by a driver update or flashing the bios. This time, I have full connectivity but no data can be transferred. I have tried repairing, refreshing the dns cache etc. I went into ipconfig and can see an ip address for myself, but I can't ping the router, or anything else for that matter. Any Ideas?

Hi

My university has wireless internet but only in campus buildings. The residence which I am in doesnt pick it up so I have to be plugged into the wall via ethernet cable. The reason the residence doesnt get the wireless is because the walls are made of cement and are two thick. I have a router that I brought from my house, and I thought I would be able to just plug the ethernet cable into the wall and into the wireless router and I would be able to get wireless internet. But it did not work this way. Does anyone have any idea on how to make this work, or do you need a main computer for it to work? It is a D-Link DI524 Router.

Thanks

Hey guys, I'm currently finishing up a new build and am trying to find ways to migrate the data. My current computer has most of the files and os installed on the C drive. But with the new computer I have an SSD I plan to use only for the OS and a few games while a second hdd will hold the majority of my stuff. I was originally planning to use Windows Easy Transfer for the migration but that would mean everything would get transferred to the SSD (if I remember correctly) which it won't have enough space for. Does anyone else have an alternative way to transfer the data? Thanks!

A:Migrating data to new computer - two drives in new computer

My preferred methods would be:

1: temporarily connect the old drive to the new PC and drag and drop whatever data needs to be moved. You don't need to formally mount it. Just open the case on the new PC and connect the old drive by cable, leaving it laying on your desk.

2: use a USB flash drive. Copy from the old drive to the flash drive, then plug the flash drive into the new PC and drag and drop. Might take multiple round trips, depending on how much data you have and the capacity of the flash drive.

In my experience, Easy Transfer is problematic, to put it mildly.

Hi mosaic1 and members,
I have been doing a fair bit of fiddling getting my setup revamped and all of my 5 drives organized, and was wanting to copy a 200 gig drive to a 250 gig drive for a certain reason..
normally this is no problem at all using Casper XP or XXClone...but for a reason "I forget the name of, and how to correct the cause" the transfer is really very slow at 400 Mb per min instead of about 2500 Mb / min
I have had slow transfer before during normal data copy and paste and a notice came up saying XXX (I forget which letters were used) was turned off and data transfer will be slow...would I like to enable XXX transfer...to which I clicked OK and all was well...well I feel the same problem has happened after the format of the receiving disk in the casper transfer which I formatted because windows was doing a long and laborious drive check every startup because drive was "Dirty" as it said...
Anyway...all of the above story is to ask how to turn on the fast data transfer...please...lol
thanks,
Or perhaps there might be something wrong with the hard drive needing the fast transfer to be turned on more than once...oh, I should mention it is only ever the same drive that gets the message..

Hi,
Running XP Pro SP2 with no networking involved. Dell 4400 desktop 384MB, U.S. Robotics 5610B internal 56K Fax PCI modem. My dial up connection just ups and stops receiving data, though it tries to send some for awhile. Problem occurrs when surfing the web or sending/receiving Outlook email. It has also occurred when downloading from Windows Update. Dialer always connects on 1st try, at 42-49KB, and connection usually works fine for a period of time. Problem is intermittent and may occur in a minute or in 15 minutes. Occasionally the data will begin to move again on it's own, but usually I have to re-dial. I reformatted my harddrive and reloaded XP Pro (and then upgraded to SP2 +Windows Update "critical patches"), installed MSOffice (which I then upgraded to SP3), my ISP's dialer, and installed current U.S.R. modem software and modem flash - and that's all the software I've installed so far - and I still have the same problem as before the PC was reloaded. I spent major time on the phone yesterday with the phone company's data department running tests, and they say my line is working great. Today I installed a new ISP (netscape.com) and I still have the same problem. I had a similar problem with another ISP (GreatBarrierReef) a year ago where the connection would not receive data right after the connection was established. U.S. Robotics sent me a replacement 5610B modem but that made no difference. Endless diagnostics didn't resolve ... Read more

I have a computer that is directly connected to my internet broadband service via my router and modem.

From that computer, by use of a router (of course), I have a wireless connection to another desktop computer in my home, about 90 feet away.

From that remote wireless internet broadband connection, I'd like to connect to yet a third computer. That third computer will be 200 more feet away.

I have a direct Cat5 wire from the wireless computer desktop to that point 200 feet away. I'm thinking of adding a computer at that point.

So, that raises my question: Can a computer receiving a wireless signal, then relay or transmit that signal to another computer that is "hard wired" to it via a Cat5 wire?

Happy New Year!

I am trying to setup a new outlook data file for 2009 which will receive my email for the year. I save all my email on the various servers where I have email accounts and have the email forwarded to outlook. I setup the new pst for 2009 and redirected mail to it. Now all the previously stored email messages on the servers going back to 2007 are being re-downloaded to the new PST for 2009. Is there anyway to just have new email go to the new PST and leave the old email where it is? Or do I have to let everything download and just delete pre 2009 email once it is downloaded?

Hope it is clear what I am trying to do. Thank you in advance for your assistance. It is greatly appreciated.

A:Problem receiving mail in new outlook data file

Hi iamalobbyist
Welcome to Tech Support Guy Forums!
Just delete the e-mails you don't want. You could create a Rule to delete everything prior to the first of the year, it would probably take the same length of time for either task.

I just tried it and had the same results when I created a new .pst file and made it the new Default Delivery Location. All messages stored on the server downloaded again.
Normally, I just create a new .pst file label it for last year and move everything out of the current .pst file.

You can also enable Archiving and messages will be archived into an archive.pst file. Though I prefer manually archiving so I know what was moved.

I have my form set up so that once the user enters data in the last field of the main form, focus moves to the first field of the subform. When the user tabs from the last field of the subform, focus is set on the first field of the subform instead of moving back to the first record of the Main form. This is because data in the fields in the Main form will be the same for multiple records in the subform and this speeds data entry.

I solved several problems thanks to the the help of "OBP" in this forum, but discovered that I've got 1 more:

The data in my main form is only saving in the underlying table for the 1st record that is entered. Once the user tabs from the last field of the subform to the first field a new record in the subform those fields are saved in the table, but not the corresponding fields in the Main form. (Very confusing but attached visual of my form and table should help).

I have set the fields in the Main form to copy to the next record, but they are not saving to the table.

The power cut may have disabled your connection.

First port of call, check Network Connections; may just be a case of right clicking on Local Area Connection and selecting 'enable'.

May be that simple, otherwise can you get another Ethernet cable to test it.

I have noticed over the last few days that my LAN indicator (two little blue rectangles) are constantly lighted in my system tray, even though I am NOT actively using the internet or networking with the other computer on my home wireless LAN. I double click on the little lights and activate the "Local Area Connection Status" window. This indicates in the "Activinty" area of the window, that I am constantly and rapidly sending and receiving packets.

This worries me greatly. It did not used to be this way. I have Norton AV 2005 fully installed, and updated and running. I use the Windows firewall, fully activated. (I have problems being able to wirelessly network with my other computer if I use Zone Alarm firewall.) I use a Lynksys WRT54G wireless router. It is fully encrypted. The "Internet activity" light on the router blinks contstantly, as does the "WLAN" light and the light for the port to which this computer is connected via ethernet cable. All of this indicates that I am constantly sending and receiving packets via the internet.

I have fully scanned using NAV, Microsoft anti-spyware, Spybot v1.4 and Ad-Aware SE and I find no problems.

PLEASE help me fix this problem!! Thanks

Do you see outgoing packets when your PC is sitting idle? And are you running any P2P software such as Limewire or Bitorrent (we cannot help you use these, only help remove them)?

TCPView will help you see what your computer is connecting to: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897437.aspx

Wireshark is an advanced ethernet packet capture utility: http://www.wireshark.org/ It takes a while to learn how to use though.

Interesting, as wired connections are usually more reliable.

Investigate the Control Panel->Power settings and ensure that you do not permit "Allow windows to turn this device off" (apologies, not certain on the wording here).

Also go to Admin Tools->Computer Mgmt->Device Mgmt

find yours & double click to get properties->Power Management Tab

Without knowing brand and model of the router nor what you want to configure I have no clue. If you have cable internet service no configuration of the router is needed, but some is advised. If you have (A)DSL service then usually the router's WAN needs to be configured PPPoE and your acccount/password.

A:Ttranfering Data from old computer to new computer

well..theres a couple of ways at least...

you can burn all files to cd/dvd, and transfer them that way...

you can physically remove the old drive, and move it to the new box and use it as a data drive and pull all data off it that way..

for programs like Outlook Express, you should do a www.google.com search for said subject, and learn how to create backup folders of mail, addy book, accounts, etc..and do so...

after done pulling data off the drive, you can put it back, and have 2 working computers...

and I'm sure there are other options also
