Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 Vulnerability: July 24

Q: Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 Vulnerability: July 24

Hiya

The Internet Mail Connector (IMC) enables Microsoft Exchange Server
to communicate with other mail servers via SMTP. When the IMC
receives an SMTP extended Hello (EHLO) protocol command from a
connecting SMTP server, it responds by sending a status reply that
starts with the following:
250-<Exchange server ID>Hello<Connecting server ID>

Where:
<Exchange server ID> is the fully-qualified domain name (FQDN) of
the Exchange server <Connecting server ID> is either the FQDN or
the IP address of the server that initiated the connection.

The FQDN would be used if the Exchange5.5 IMC is able to resolve
this information through a reverse DNS lookup; the IP address
would be used if a reverse DNS lookup was not possible or failed
to resolve the connecting servers IP address.

A security vulnerability results because of an unchecked buffer
In the IMC code that generates the response to the EHLO protocol
command. If the total length of the message exceeds a particular
value, the data would overrun the buffer. If the buffer were
overrun with random data, it would result in the failure of the
IMC. If, however, the buffer were overrun with carefully chosen
data, it could be possible for the attacker to run code in the
security context of the IMC, which runs as Exchange5.5 Service
Account.

It is important to note that the attacker could not simply send
Data to the IMC in order to overrun the buffer. Instead, the
Attacker would need to create a set of conditions that would
cause the IMC to overrun its own buffer when it generated the
EHLO response. Specifically, the attacker would need to ensure
that a reverse DNS lookup would not only succeed, but would
provide an FQDN whose length was sufficient to result in the
buffer overrun.

SQL Server 2000 introduces the ability to host multiple instances of
SQL Server on a single physical machine. Each instance operates for
all intents and purposes as though it was a separate server. However,
the multiple instances cannot all use the standard SQL Server session
port (TCP 1433). While the default instance listens on TCP port 1433,
named instances listen on any port assigned to them. The SQL Server
Resolution Service, which operates on UDP port 1434, provides a way
for clients to query for the appropriate network endpoints to use for
a particular SQL Server instance.

There are three security vulnerabilities here. The first two are
buffer overruns. By sending a carefully crafted packet to the
Resolution Service, an attacker could cause portions of system memory
(the heap in one case, the stack in the other) to be overwritten.
Overwriting it with random data would likely result in the failure of
the SQL Server service; overwriting it with carefully selected data
could allow the attacker to run code in the security context of the
SQL Server service.

The third vulnerability is a denial of service vulnerability. SQL
uses a keep-alive mechanism to distinguish between active and passive
instances. It is possible to create a keep-alive packet that, when
sent to the Resolution Service, will cause SQL Server 2000 to respond
with the same information. An attacker who created such a packet,
spoofed the source address so that it appeared to come from a one SQL

This patch eliminates two newly discovered vulnerabilities affecting
SQL Server 2000 and MSDE 2000:

- A buffer overrun vulnerability that occurs in several Database
Consistency Checkers (DBCCs) that ship as part of SQL Server 2000.
DBCCs are command console utilities that allow maintenance and
other operations to be performed on a SQL Server. While many of
these are executable only by sysadmin, some are executable by
members of the db_owner and db_ddladmin roles as well. In the most
serious case, exploiting this vulnerability would enable an
attacker to run code in the context of the SQL Server service,
thereby giving the attacker complete control over all databases
on the server.

- A SQL injection vulnerability that occurs in two stored
procedures used in database replication. One of these can only be
run by users who have been assigned the db_owner role; the other,
due to a permissions error, could be run by any user who could log
onto the server interactively. Exploiting the vulnerability could
enable an attacker to run operating system commands on the server,
but is subject to significant mitigating factors as discussed
below.

When installing SQL Server 7.0 (including MSDE 1.0), SQL Server 2000,
or a service pack for SQL Server 7.0 or SQL Server 2000, the
information provided for the install process is collected and stored
in a setup file called setup.iss. The setup.iss file can then be
used to automate the installation of additional SQL Server systems.
SQL Server 2000 also includes the ability to record an unattended
install to the setup.iss file without having to actually perform an
installation. The administrator setting up the SQL Server can supply
a password to the installation routine under the following
circumstances:

- If the SQL Server is being set up in "Mixed Mode", a password
for the SQL Server administrator (the "sa" account) must be
supplied.
- Whether in Mixed Mode or Windows Authentication Mode, a User ID
and password can optionally be supplied for the purpose of
starting up SQL Server service accounts.

In either case, the password would be stored in the setup.iss file.
Prior to SQL Server 7.0 Service Pack 4, the passwords were stored in
clear text. For SQL Server 7.0 Service Pack 4 and SQL Server 2000
Service Packs 1 and 2, the passwords are encrypted and then stored.
Additionally, a log file is created during the installation process
that shows the results of the installation. The log file would also
include any passwords that had been stored in the setup.iss file.

Hiya

This is a cumulative patch that includes the functionality of all
previously released patches for SQL Server 7.0, SQL Server 2000, MSDE
1.0, and MSDE 2000. In addition, it eliminates three newly discovered
vulnerabilities.

- Named Pipe Hijacking -
Upon system startup, SQL Server creates and listens on a specific
named pipe for incoming connections to the server. A named pipe is a
specifically named one-way or two-way channel for communication
between a pipe server and one or more pipe clients. The named pipe is
checked for verification of which connection attempts can log on to
the system running SQL Server to execute queries against data that is
stored on the server.

A flaw exists in the checking method for the named pipe that could
allow an attacker local to the system running SQL Server to hijack
(gain control of) the named pipe during another client's
authenticated logon password. This would allow the attacker to gain
control of the named pipe at the same permission level as the user
who is attempting to connect. If the user who is attempting to
connect remotely has a higher level of permissions than the attacker,
the attacker will assume those rights when the named pipe is
compromised.

- Named Pipe Denial of Service -
In the same named pipes scenario that is mentioned in the "Named Pipe
Hijacking" section of this bulletin, it is possible for an
unauthenticated user who is local to the intranet to send a very
large packet to a specific named pip... Read more

Hiya

This is a work-around bulletin that details steps customers can
take to protect themselves against a publicly disclosed
vulnerability until patches are available.

The Gopher protocol is a legacy protocol that provides for the
transfer of text-based information across the Internet.
Information on Gopher servers is hierarchically presented using a
menu system, and multiple Gopher servers can be linked together to
form a collective "Gopherspace".

There is an unchecked buffer in a piece of code which handles the
response from Gopher servers. This code is used independently in
IE, ISA, and Proxy Server. A security vulnerability results
because it is possible for an attacker to attempt to exploit this
flaw by mounting a buffer overrun attack through a specially
crafted server response. The attacker could seek to exploit the
vulnerability by crafting a web page that contacted a server
under the attacker's control. The attacker could then either post
this page on a web site or send it as an HTML email. When the page
was displayed and the server's response received and processed,
the attack would be carried out.

A successful attack requires that the attacker be able to send
information to the intended target using the Gopher protocol.
Anything which inhibited Gopher connectivity could protect against
attempts to exploit this vulnerability. In the case of IE, the
code would be run in the user's context. As a result, any
limitations on the user would... Read more

Commerce Server 2000 and Commerce Server 2002 are web server products
for building e-commerce sites. These products provides tools and
features that simplify developing and deploying e-commerce solutions,
and provide tools that let the site administrator analyze the usage
of their e-commerce site.

Four vulnerabilities exist in the Commerce Server products:

- A vulnerability that results because the Profile Service contains
an unchecked buffer in a section of code that handles certain
types of API calls. The Profile Service can be used to enable
users to manage their own profile information and to research
the status of their order. An attacker who provided specially
malformed data to certain calls exposed by the Profile Service
could cause the Commerce Server process to fail, or could run
code in the LocalSystem security context. This vulnerability
only affects Commerce Server 2000.

- A buffer overrun vulnerability in the Office Web Components (OWC)

PHP is a popular scripting language in widespread use. For more information about PHP, see

http://www.php.net/manual/en/faq.general.php

The vulnerability occurs in the portion of PHP code responsible for handling file uploads, specifically multipart/form-data. By sending a specially crafted POST request to the web server, an attacker can corrupt the internal data structures used by PHP. Specifically, an intruder can cause an improperly initialized memory structure to be freed. In most cases, an intruder can use this flaw to crash PHP or the web server. Under some circumstances, an intruder may be able to take advantage of this flaw to execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the web server.

You may be aware that freeing memory at inappropriate times in some implementations of malloc and free does not usually result in the execution of arbitrary code. However, because PHP utilizes its own memory management system, the implementation of malloc and free is irrelevant to this problem.

Stefan Esser of e-matters GmbH has indicated that intruders cannot execute code on x86 systems. However, we encourage system administrators to apply patches on x86 systems as well to guard against denial-of-service attacks and as-yet-unknown attack techniques that may permit the execution of code on x86 architectures.

This vulnerability was discovered by e-matters GmbH and is described in detail in their advisory. The PHP Group has also issued an advisory. A list of vendors con... Read more

Look up the Exchange Management Wizard (ExMerge). It still works with Exchange 2007, but you can't install it on the Exchange server itself.

That will do what you want.

You can also do it with the Exchange Management Shell (PowerShell) but I haven't looked up how because ExMerge does what I need.

Have a client with an exchange server... There's been several instances where the Email to some addresses have not gone through. Sometimes they go through, some times they don't. The main issues is that some instances the server tires to send the email for about a week before it sends out an email saying it couldn't be delivered. One case it took up to 2 weeks.

Shown below you can see it trying to send the email for 2 weeks and then finally it sends out a Non-Delivered Report.

Is there some setting to change it so it only tries to send for like 12-24 hours? Any ideas what to look for to see why these emails are failing? It's happened 7 times the last month, and to about 5 different email addresses.

Hi all,

Currently I use Microsoft Outlook 2007 with Windows 7 on my home computer and have around 5 e-mail accounts that go into 1 inbox using POP3. I recently started a new job and received a work e-mail that uses Outlook 2003 with Microsoft Exchange Server. I cannot access the e-mails through POP3 and so can just access them through the Web when I am not at work.

I would like to have access to all of my old e-mails at work so that I can search through them and would also like to see my tasks and calendar. Before I knew how my work e-mail was set up I was planning on synchronizing 2 outlooks using dropbox and true crypt, but I don't think this is possible. Is there a way I can run a 2nd instance of Outlook at work with the pst file from home so that at least I can have access to searches of my old e-mail? Is there a way to synchronize my home tasks or calendar with the outlook 2003 exchange server at work? Or can I use both a pst file and have the work e-mails stored on the server at work?

Thanks!

When launching the Outlook client, he is continually prompted to enter his credentials which aren't accepted. When they try to log in to OWA, same issue.

This is occurring for the same user on multiple PCs and terminal servers. Tried disconnecting and reconnecting his mailbox in Exchange with no luck.

I am able to download Exchange 2007 through the MSDN Academic Alliance for testing purposes. I am allowed to burn it to DVD for future use.

But unlike most applications that are provided as .iso image files, the entire download is offered as individual files and folders. I can create an .iso. But I also like to keep true by using the proper disk image label. For example Exchange Server 2003 Enterprise is E3EVOLENG.

Does anyone know the proper disk labels (names) for the various flavors of Exchange 2007? Searches turn up nothing.

Thanks!

Is there a shortcut to the Microsoft Exchange Server properties within Outlook 2003?

Usually have to go through TOOLS - OPTIONS - MAIL SETUP - "View or change existing e-mails accounts" - click "change" on next screen - then click on Next settings - THEN I am on the Microsoft Exchange Server settings....

Any easier way to get to this screen?

thanks !

A:Shortcut To Client Microsoft Exchange Server Properties?

Try going to the Mail applet via the Control Panel.

Start >> Control Panel >> Mail

That should bring up the Mail Setup - MS Exchange Settings applet. From there you have the choices to access the E-mail Accounts, Data Files, and Profiles applets.

A:How to configution Microsoft exchange server 2003 in to server2003

Since are asking the question and given that you posted your e-mail address on a public webpage.. You don't know much about e-mail and you probably shouldn't be doing this on your own.

Anyway, a good start would be Reading The Friendly Manual.

Hi,

I am trying to setup Microsoft Outlook 2010 with Exchange Server 2003, but I ve run into some problems. Normally I access the mail from mail.pi.ac.ae.

Below are some screenshots that show the error i get when i try to sign in.

After I setup the whole account, I restarted outlook. From then onwards whenever I try to open outlook it gives me this error.

After I click OK, it leads me to this window, you can see my account settings here.

When I click OK i get this error.

If i change any settings in the account settings .. and click APPLY then i get this message and Outlooks closes by itself.

The strange thing is that these same setting work just fine with the Email Client in my Nokia Smartphone

A:How to setup Microsoft Outlook 2010 with Exchange Server 2003

Have you used Outlook in this manner before prior to going to Outlook 2010? There are additional settings that need to be configured for RPC over HTTP if that is the way you were connecting before. If it was POP or IMAP you need to configure your connection that way.

Setup for RPC over HTTP. I think you have to do the initial setup from in the office.
