T490 issue with connecting an external display through the HDMI port

Q: T490 issue with connecting an external display through the HDMI port

I have a new Lenovo Thinkpad T490 with an Intel UHD Graphics 620 controller and whenever I try to connect an external display through the HDMI port the display is detected, but nothing shows on it. The screen either remains black or a "No signal" message is displayed on it. Displays seem to be working fine through the USB-C display port. I am primarily using Ubuntu 19.10, but I tested the problem on Windows 10 and it is the same. The graphic card drivers and the BIOS are up to date. I also tried with different monitors and none of them works. Here's an output from the xrandr command, where the display is detected on the port HDMI-2. I tried multiple resolutions, refresh rates, but nothing works. Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1920 x 1080, maximum 16384 x 16384

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Connected an IOGear compact dock to the laptop's USB C. Connected monitor #1 to the dock's HDMI port.Connected an HDMI cable to monitor #2 and used an HDMI to mini display port adapter to connect to the docks mini diplay port.I used the "Extend Display" setting on the laptop.I can only get display on the laptop monitor and one of the external monitors.  I can't get the display to work on both external monitors.  Second external monitor is not detected.  Help please. I am told that a plugable usb type c docking station would work, it has two "Disply ++ Ports".  Suggestion is to use an HDMI to DP++ cable to connect to the dual external monitors. Haven't tried it yet, does anyone know whether that'll work?

Hello Community, I am looking for your assistance regarding a topic with the external display I am currently using. I am running a Windows 10 on my laptop and after an update of the nVidia drivers - I have an issue with the signal going through the HDMI cable. While the External display is plugged in - it is using the Intel Integrated. I have came across a similar topic in here:https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-P-Y-and-Z-series/Lenovo-Z50-70-HDMI-not-working-when-connecting-... And I have done almost everything except the "RESTART" option. I have checked the HDMI cable and it is High speed - and yes, I am sure - the issue first appeared when I updated the drivers. Now I have reverted to older version of the drivers but still experience the issue.

I recently bought a 720p Sony Bravia TV. My laptop is a ASUS M50Sseries with HD capabilities. I wanted to watch a movie from my laptop on my TV So I plugged the HDMI cord in from the laptop to the TV and it adjusted the resolution and the brightness of my laptop. (On a separate note, I couldn't get the sound to work on the TV either) So, once I got done I un plugged my laptop and it adjusted my resolution but my brightness didn't change back. I have tried to adjust both software brightness and hardware brightness. The software actually does change but not enough to matter and the hardware adjustment does nothing, up or down. HELP PLEASE!

Hallo Community, I am using my X1 Carbon gen 4th with an external Monitor via HDMI cable. Now i would like to try to add another external Monitor on it. Without any docking station would be perfect. I notice that there is also a mini display port on my device. I suppose I can connect one monitor via HDMI and the other with mini Displayport? Will these two monitors work together at the same time? I would like to ask, if anyone has experience about that?   Thanks for the  inputs in advance!

so last month I bought an Acer Switch 5 which doesn't have HDMI or VGA ports and was reassured that an USB-C to HDMI adapter would work for me to display presentations on customer/prospect screens when I visit their offices.
So far I have tried 2 different brands of USB-C to HDMI adapter cables and both show a USB not recognised error on the Acer.
So how to fix this?
Is it a brand adapter cable issue?
Is it a USB-C driver issue?
or something else?

I really thought in this day and age of laptop/tablet sophistication problems like this wouldn't occur. Feel like I want to go back to my 4 year old toshiba laptop with a VGA and HDMI port and no issues!

We have T470 (20JM) and T470s(20JS) in our environment. Both models are having a problem connecting to external displays using HDMI Intermittently and sporadically the screen goes blank. It does not matter what order I turn on the devices or connect the cables. Randomly the screen will go black - sometimes the image comes back within a few seconds; sometimes the image blinks on and off for up to a minute; sometimes the image is steady and the monitor is usable for an hour or two; sometimes the image stays off for so long (about 30 seconds) that I get a "No Signal Detected" message from the monitor, only to have the image return (sometimes within seconds, sometimes within minutes, sometimes within hours).

I'm using a Dell U3415W monitor. My video card is AMD Radeon RX480. The monitor is connected via DisplayPort to my computer. The monitor is connected via HDMI to my work laptop. When I want to switch over to HDMI, it acts as if I shut off the monitor on the Displayport shifting everything over to my secondary monitor. It causes no problem, but drives me nuts because when I switch back over to DIsplayPort, I have to move my open programs around again. Is there any simple way to make this stop? If I don't use DisplayPort, and instead use HDMI/DVI combination, the behavior described does not happen. I'm guessing that is just the way it is, but I'm hoping there is an easy way to make it stop.

I purchased an external monitor on Friday.  It worked on Friday and Saturday. Sunday when I booted up, the external monitor no longer worked. The history appears to show an automatic update occurred overnight.  I was running Windows 8.1.  I upgraded to 10.  I have uninstalled and reinstalled the intel video driver, I reinstalled the chipset driver.  I have trimmed the micro HDMI cord as suggested in one of the posts.  I have seen enough posts on the various boards to know my issue does not seem to be an isolated case... but I haven't been able to find an explanation of the cause or a reliable solution.  Any help is appreciated.

I just got a new laptop, and I'm having trouble connecting all three external screens as I used on the old machine. On the old computer I connected two screens using the d-ports on my docking station in combination with one display using the hdmi port in my laptop. Now, with my new computer, I can either connect two screens via the d-port's on my docking station, but then the hdmi port does not work, and the display says there is no signal coming out of my computer. When I pull the two d-port cords out, the hdmi port starts working automatically.
- Intel HD Graphics 5500 (same as the old laptop)- 3x Dell U2415 screens
Is there a way the hdmi port on my laptop can work simultaneously with the d-ports on the docking station while it is docked? (It worked fine on the old one)

So hello to everyone. I myself got a huge problem with my T480 and the Pro Docking Station for while now.I cannot connect any display with any cable to the display ports on the back of the dock without having my T480 completely freezing up as long as the display cable is plugged in.After removing the display cable everything goes back to normal. I already got exchanged mainboard and docking station so my only left guess is a software problem. Currently running Win10 1809 up to date with all drivers (Win and Docking station) up to date. Anyone here might be able to help me here because the phone support is out of options. Greetings,Andreas

Just purchased a new Mobo (Asus P8Z77-V Deluxe). Haven't bought the CPU. I am waithing on the new 22nm models. After taking a close look at the display outputs on the mobo I have a choice of HDMI or Display Port. None of my existing monitors have ports for that. Soooo I guess I get a new display.

What should I be looking at as far as cables and the choice between HDMI or Display Port. I am not familiar with either one. Also I am assuming the cabling is different for the two ports.

A:Display Port or HDMI

You can find adapters to allow you to use either with DVI. If your current monitor needs replacing anyway, an HDMI-native model will be cheaper than the DP version.

It can get more complicated if you have plans for multiple monitors down the road.

I have been doing a lot of research but all I find is B/S like when they were invented, royalty rights, extra pins ect. but not just some basics answers to some basic questions.

I have a video card and display both with HDMI and Display Port ability.
At the present time I'm using HDMI to HDMI.

1. Can I use HDMI and Display Port using 2 cables at the same time on the same screen and is it a advantage or disadvantage?
Please explain.

2. If I just use Display Port will it work better that just HDMI?

I don't have a Display Port to Display Port cable at this time.
I will buy one if it will make things better.

I'm not having a problem at this time. I'm just trying to get the most out of my hardware.

1 monitor 1 cable

since DP and HDMI are both digital, I guess there is no advantage either way (unlike analog vs digital).

2 outputs usually means dual monitor support, although you'd have to check the manual. Dual screens is the best upgrade I've ever made, esp for my C4D work - also good for watching TV whilst surfing !

BTW although I mainly use DVI, I had to buy a HDMI lead recently to test some gear. I was surprised to see a note in the package to the effect 'warning do not hot swap this lead - power down all equipment before connecting'. Apparently there's some kinda live detecting pin that can cause probs when hot plugging.

My company uses Dell laptops exclusively and I have never had trouble connecting a projector to a laptop and duplicating the laptop screen on the projector.  Now we are updating to large LED HDTV's in our conference rooms and I am trying to get the laptop screen to duplicate on the HDTV using the HDMI connection on both laptop and TV.  I can get it to Extend the desktop to both screens, but, not duplicate them.  The option is not under the Windows Change resolution dialog box or the Nvidia Control panel.  The only options are Display only on 1, Display only on 2 and extend desktop.  I have tried the updated Dell supplied Nvidia and Intel drivers and even gone to the Nvidia website and downloaded their latest.  What the heck am I doing wrong?  Any ideas would be appreciated.

Afraid adapters aren't going to work.
SVGA outputs an analog signal.
HDMI is digital.
You would need a signal converter and those aren't very cheap.

I have Lenovo B540 All-In-One (Windows 8) whose monitor is cracked and the screen is black. I'm trying to still use the computer or at least access the hard drive by attaching a second monitor through the HDMI Out connect slot in the back. So I purchased the "DVI-D to HDMI (or vice versa)" cable (Dynex brand) for $40 from BestBuy and made the connection to my DVI monitor.

Well, Lenovo turns on but is not recognizing the second monitor! Should it automatically recognize the second monitor or are there some steps involved like pressing down on certain function keys (like you would in laptops)? I've perused Lenovo's hardware support manual but they don't explain proper steps.

Does anyone know what the proper steps are when the original monitor is not working? I know for sure the computer itself is working; it's making all the right Windows start-up noise. No, the computer is not passworded so it should go in straight.

Would it be easier to connect to the TV via HDMI? Would I then need HDMI cables?

Thanks everyone for any suggestions you might have to offer.

Simply said: the notebook does not crash using external monitor with lower resolution than 2560x1440. Right?

Found your notebook model.

and it seems that the unit supports the Intel? QM77 Express Chipset and Intel? Graphics Media Accelerator QM77

I would recommend updating the graphic card driver.
On the Toshiba page you can find the Intel display driver v8.15.10.2712 (Win 7)
Also you could test the version downloaded from Intel page.

Does HDMI needed to be unplugged and plug back in for it to broadcast a signal from Laptop to an external monitor? Because this seems to be my case at times.

A:Laptop connecting to an external Monitor via HDMI

It shouldn't. Does the problem occur during bootup, or while in use?

Also, if it occurs after letting the PC sleep or hibernation, it could be a hardware or OS/software issue.

Hi! I have a brand new HP Pavilion dv6-6137so which I want to connect to an also brand new HP 2311x monitor. This works just fine if I use  VGA . But when I try to connect the notebook to the monitor with a hdmi cable, the monitor stays black (with the message "check your cable" or something similar). Is there something I could do to make the hdmi connection work - and in that case what? Or do I have to be content with the VGA connection to the external monitor? Thanks in advance to anyone nice enough to try and help!

A:Connecting notebook to external monitor with hdmi

See this document http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c02013758 Your particular model of monitor should auto detect the input source, so you can skip that step in the guide. More information about your monitor can be found in the "getting started" section on this page.http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/product?product=4296902&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&task=&lang=en&cc=us

Hi,I have a Zbook G3 which has and HDMI port to connect to an external display. The monitors I have are EliteDisplay E241i which have display port connectors (as well as RGA and DVI, but I'd rather not use those). Can you please point me in the direction of a good connector that will allow me to display my Zbook on the above monitors? Thanks in advance,Phil

A:HDMI (laptop) to Display Port (Monitor)

Hi, Except for VGA, from HDMI to DisplayPort or DVI is digital signals and you should get same result on your current monitor. Any standard HDMI to DVI or HDMI to DP cable will do the job. Regards.

I have a Samsung TV with a Thinkpad T430 with the same problem. My solution is to plug the cable in-and-out several times, and just press some volumebuttons on the laptop, it works in 95% cases.

Hi,We have Lenovo M920q with 1 DisplayPort and 1 HDMI port. After a while we lost the display on the monitor connected into the HDMI port. The patern look like to be when the machine is getting lock after a while. We run another screen on the display port without problem. If we unplug the HDMI cable behind the compter and plug it again, the display on the scren come back. (DVI to HDMI cable) The other option is to rebbot the machine. We run Lenovo System Update and all drivers are up to date. The video driver is:Intel UHD Graphics 630 - 2019/4/30 -  Any Idea? Thanks!

As mentioned in the title I have both pieces of hardware.  I also just purchased a third Dell U2414H LCD monitor.  I am trying to connect all 3 via display port.  However it seems that all I can do is 2 monitors?  When I try to daisychain them I got 2 monitors mirroring each other and one through HDMI off the laptop.

Is this a physical limitation of the replicator?  Is there a firmware update somewhere?

A:Dell Latitude E6520 & E-Port Plus 2 - Display port issue

The E6520 comes with Intel HD Graphics 3000.  The specs for that GPU are buried in the specs for the CPU itself, but if you go to ark.intel.com and look up your CPU, then scroll down to the graphics section and verify that it shows Intel HD Graphics 3000, you'll find that that GPU only supports 2 independent displays, which is why you see mirroring.  More recent Intel GPUs do indeed support 3 displays, but no Intel GPUs to my knowledge yet support 4.
If your E6520 has the NVIDIA discrete GPU, I can't find any information on NVIDIA's site about maximum number of supported displays, but based on your experience I would assume it's 2 unless indicated otherwise.
