Bad seagate drive? Need some help

Q: Bad seagate drive? Need some help

I bought a 1 TB barracuda seagate drive about 4-5 months ago. My wife recently alerted me to a warning windows 7 popped up saying that the drive was failing and I should back everything up on the drive (I haven't been home much lately, been sequestered away studying).

I use the drive for media (movies, pictures, music, etc) and have 3 other HD's on the computer (all maxtors). 1 running the OS, 1 I run games from and 1 that back up images and files too.

I ran a scan on the drive with windows (strangely seatools isn't detecting any of my maxtor drives or the seagate ones ) and it did not note anything wrong with it. So I downloaded HD tune pro (the trial) and took a look at the drive. Under Reallocated sector count it shows 30 bad, 30 as the minimum (before it sets of the alarm? I am not sure minimum what), and 36 as threshold (again not sure what threshold is for). The status is listed as 'failed' and it says 2882 damaged sectors that have been replaced. HD tune pro's advice is the drive is imminently going to fail.

I've had the displeasure of losing hard drives before. This drive isn't acting anything like a drive with hardware errors. It isn't sluggish. Files on it weren't corrupted. It wasn't making funny noises, etc So was thinking this might be some kind of logical error and not an actual hardware fault?

So I zerofilled the drive last night and ran a chkdsk /r on it today. The chkdsk shows 0 bad sectors. However the HD tune pro still shows 2882 sectors having been bad and replaced. Does that mean it still has bad sectors? Or will that be "written" into the SMART and always show up on the drive from now on? How can I tell if the drive is safe to go back to using?

I know drives come with some bad sectors on them already, could it just be that this one had a lot of bad sectors to start with? If so what is the consequence of that, does it mean the drive will have a shorter life? Should I argue with Seagate and get them to replace the drive or is it okay to use now?

Thanks for any help

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

It is on a computer running XP SP3. Now, it shows up in ?My Computer? but with no statistics and I cannot open it. The drive does not show up in Windows Disk Management. I have gone thru the Seagate website's ?External Drive Trouble Shooter for WinDOWS xp/2000? as well as contacting Seagate Support with no success. I have tried Windows Format, DOS Format, Seatools for Windows, HD LFF Low Level Format, testdisk_win, and Disk Wizard with no success. The drive showed up but they all reported failure in testing and/or accessing the disk. Seatools for DOS sounds like it would do the trick but it didnotrecognizeeitherofmyexternaldrives, theotheroneofwhichisworking. Can anyone recommend a fix? Seems to me that it is a software problem, not a hardware problem, so there should be a software solution. I have very limited funds and can't afford to replace the drive right now. It is used as a backup drive so loss of the data on the drive is not an issue. I'll just run another backup when the drive is restored to health. My boot drive is not backed up on this drive, so that is not a problem.

Hi,

When I switched my Laptop on yesterday the nice Seagate Icon for my external backup hard drive had vanished but has been replaced by a dull looking generic Windows page icon ? This external backup drive is the K:\ drive on my system.

I surfed google yesterday trying to find some advice on how to restore what was a very attractive Icon ? . . but have been struggling to find any advice I could understand or thought I'd be able to follow ?

On a positive note, I have located the exact file for the disappeared icon on my laptop (its called SeagatePortable.ico) and I have copied it to my desktop temporarily, but, I have no idea how to re-apply this icon to my K:\ drive ?

Whilst surfing, I discovered a simple freeware program called "Drive Icon Changer" so I downloaded this program and tried to use it. It is very easy to use, but, try as I might, I cannot get this programme to interact with my K;\ drive ? . . so I've given up and uninstalled that programme, as, in this instance at least, it clearly does not do what it is supposed to be able to do.

I also saw some advice about going to a DOS prompt (I do not understand what this means or how to do it?) and deleting or editing something called the autorun.inf file - I suspect this type of action would be well beyond my understanding and I'd probably do more harm than good if I attempted to edit this sort of system file and got it wrong !

I've also done a system restore - to a back up point of a couple of days ... Read more

A:How do I restore the Seagate Drive Icon for my External Backup Drive?

Also just spotted an obsolete thread on this site where someone suggested:-

"Un-install the driver while the external drive is connected and then rebooted and let windows reinstall - everything should go back to normal when Windows re-discovered the drive".

I don't know if this might cure my problem ? . . but unfortunately I do not know how to uninstall a driver ?

After Transferring file from Seagate External drive to flash drive 16G. (Verbatim)

I can't remove hardware device on Verbatim Flash drive to remove it.

Even after I close all the files, folders and programs in my computer.
It won't say "safe to remove device".

I have to switch off the computer to remove the flash drive.

Is this normal or what ?

If not what can be the problem ? I can fix ?

Is it safe to remove device even if I can't disable the usb flash drive ?
I closed all the files, fodlers and programs before I remove.

Thanks.

A:Transferring file from Seagate External drive to flash drive

The computer may still be saving data to the Flash. Or it is caught in ROM. If your certain the transfer is complete, you can pull the drive. You may want to do a Check Disk on the Flash Drive to make sure it is in good order.

I'm having trouble getting Windows 7 x86 RC Build 7100 to recognize my Seagate 3.5" External Hard Drive 500GB (Model ST305004EXA101-RK). It is connected through a USB 2.0 port on my Asus K8V SE Motherboard - running an AMD Athlon 64 3000+ (2.0 GHz) and 1 GB of RAM.

Currently, this hard drive when connected appears in Device and Printers as as "Device" named Desktop. Right Click -> Properties shows that it is a storage device.

Device Manager recognizes it as a Disk Drive and calls it a Seagate Desktop USB Device - no conflicts.

Under Computer Management -> Storage -> Disk Management the drive appears as Disk 1 - Basic and Online statuses. If I try and assign it a drive letter, I get the following "The operation failed to complete becasue the Disk Managment Console view is out of date. Please refresh the console view..."

Only one conflict exists in Device Manager - I have one Unknown Device under USB Controllers. When viewing that device, it gives me a Code 43 error.

Thoughts? Thanks in advance.

I recently purchased a Seagate IDE Tape Drive, STT20000. I only have 4 IDE slots, and they are all taken, plus I don't have any room for an IDE controller card, so I bought a IDE to USB external case that turns any IDE device to a USB external device. I installed the tape drive, Windows XP recognizes the new device, attepts to install drivers, but cannot find any. I tried to search the Internet for any correct drivers and could not find any. Other devices work via USB that are attached to the same USB hub, and I can put a tape in the unit and it rewinds it. No drive letter is assigned at all.

Any help is appreciated.

Ok so recently have upgraded to Windows & Ultimate on a Samsung HDD, and copied ALL necessary information that i needed to a Seagate HDD before the format. The Seagate was formatted on the XP install with NTFS, and data copied to it. Now after the install the primary(Samsung works fine), but the Seagate where all my information is does not come up in my computer. At start up, it does pick up both drives, and in Device manager it says( ST9120822AS SCSI Disk), and in Disk Manager, it does show, and is healthy and says something like backup partion/recovery partition or something to that effect, but there is no drive letter. When I right click on the drive the only thing that comes up is Help, no option to assign a drive letter. The Seagate drive capacity shows 111,9/120 Gigs, which means there is data there.

Now I did have the motherboard drivers but those didn't have anything for windows 7, as it came out later, and i did install them. I have recently downloaded the drivers and will install them when I get home. If the drivers aren't an issue what could it be?

Hello Vengeful and welcome to the Forum. You might see if this will work:Plug in the external hard drive
Open Device Manager
Expand the USB list
Find the USB device for your USB Hard Drive (in my case it was the one that had no description)
Right mouse click > Uninstall
Unplug external hard drive and restart computer
Plug external hard drive back in and let Windows 7 find/install the driver
See if external hard drive is recognized/works.
Another possibility:

1. Plug in the external USB hard drive
2. Right mouse click on Computer
3.Left click on Manage
4.Double click on Storage
5.Double click on Dick Management
6.Disk 0 is Hard Drive Partitions
Disk 1 will display the SIZE of the external device with no name
7. Right mouse click the BLUE BAR on Disk 1
8.Left click on Mark Partition as Active
9.Left click on Change Drive Letter and Paths
10.Right click the “Add” button - Right click OK
11. The external USB device should now have a drive letter

Hey guys. I have a 300 gig Seagate drive. Well its not been working for a few months.

I am 100% sure its nothing to do with the drive itself coz believe it or not, I haven't MOVED my drive from my desk since I bought it. I'm pretty sure there's some loose connection somewhere inside the drive as sometimes it does show up.

Well, I sent it to Seacare and after 2 weeks, they returned it. And guess what? I still wasn't working! Same problem.

The thing is, the drive doesn't show up on my Mac. I've tried every possible troubleshooting method without success.

I was thinking, what if I opened up the drive? I could just break open the plastic and see what connections were loose. Is it possible to do that, remove the metal drive from inside and connect it using new wires? I AM really desperate, so..

Given these things, could the drive have faulty sectors, or be failing?

I have been looking at getting a 1TB hard drive, the setup and reason on my computer I won't explain. However the brand I like the look of is Seagate. WD choose to go green, which is about the only feature they like to brag about. Nothing seems any better than Seagate with Hitachi.

So far I understand they have two models, which is why I looked up "ST31000340NS vs ST31000340AS" in google. The actual difference is small, being the NS having more restistance to shock because they might be used in trays of hard drives. Can you imagine getting read errors all because four of the other HDD's are creating problems to one other on the same tray? Oh and the amount of hours it is expected to have in it's life. I suppose I don't mind which model I choose out of the two as long as it is available, and is the cheaper one.

The main question I have to ask is why (from what I have noticed in NZ), is there usually a 1 year RTB warranty on this drive, when Seagate offer 5 years warranty which is a lot compared to other HDD companies? I can understand if they reduce 1 year on the drive, but I am missing a pretty big 4 years warranty. If I can't get that warrenty, how can I get that somewhere else?

Hi-

I have a 40GB Seagate I would like to use in a system and I can't seem to format it. It is an ST340810A. I have all the jumpers done correctly but whether I attach it via USB or IDE it is not recognized. I have used the Seagate disk wizard (which does find it and goes through all the steps but doesn't format it). I have tried hooking it on to the primary IDE cable as master and rebuilding via and old win 98 disk but it comes back and says it can't format it. I have tried to use manage storage via a right click off of my computer- it shows the disk but no info on it and along with the seagate wizard software says no sectors, etc. I have two st340810A disks and they both act the same. I have tried to put them in multiple computers with multiple OS's- to no avail. The disks are spinning up. I got them out of HP DE100c systems (linux systems). Any ideas on how I can get these working and formatted w Fat or NTFS?

Thanks

That does look strange. I assume that it's a used disk you've added since there's already a 270GB partition on it? HOWEVER, It doesn't have a drive letter assigned to it.

What exactly is it you want to do? Delete everything on it and create a single 2TB partition or what? Assign a drive letter to the existing partition so you can see what's on there?

There's a free partition tool you can use to do all kinds of partition work that Windows Disk Management can't do. You can find it HERE.

If all you want to do is to expand the existing partition, via WIndows DIsk Management, to use the available space on the disk? Then there's a guide on that HERE.

Just remember that if you delete the existing partition ALL data on it will be lost.

I purchased 2 Seagate ST32000641AS drives. These are 2TB drives giving 4TB all up.

They are S.M.A.R.T enabled drives and as such I installed monitoring software to check up on them from time to time . I am concerned that both of these drives are showing indication of failure already. Normally I just use 1 program to check but I have tried with 3 different ones and they all show the health of both drives, one at 40% and the other at 32%.

One drive is showing Surface Read Error Rate at 80% health and Controller Hardware ECC Recovered at 32. The other drive is showing Surface Read Error Rate at 67%, Surface Seek error rate at 51%, and Controller Hardware ECC Recovered at 40%.

Have I got reason to be worried as these drives are only about 3 to 4 months in use. It is not showing any physical problem except that it is the slowest part of my PC rating at only 5.9 on the Windows Experience Test.

I've got Win XP, and bought an additional internal 350GB hd from Seagate. I've had absolutely no problems with it so far.

I woke up this morning, and my computer was acting uncharacteristically slow, so I rebooted. It took several times to reboot in order to get to the password screen, it would just take exceptionally long to go through the waiting screen, on safe mode, regular mode, etc.

I finally was able to get on, and I opened a folder which is a shortcut to my Seagate for music, but I got a pop up from Windows claiming "The drive or network connection that the shortcut 'Music.lnk' refers to is unavailable. Make sure the disk is properly inserted or the network resource is available, and then try again'

I've tried going into My Computer, the drive isn't there, nor does it appear when I right click, under manage...

There's been no physical trauma, movement, or anything to my tower. Could it possibly be a virus? I've used uTorrent for a while, but never had any issues with corrupt files (that I know of), and a full scan with AVG hasn't turned anything up.

Any thing I can do to get back my hard drive? I appreciate it :)

The slow boot times and the fact that the drive is no longer found by Windows, would seem to indicate the HDD has failed. If you disconnect the HDD, your boot times will return to normal. If it's still under warranty, you can have it replaced.

I recently added a third Seagate 1.5 Tbite drive to my Dell XPS 720 running on Vista. The BIOS and system both recognise the drive correctly. When I right click on the drives bar in Disk Management and choose Simple Volume and quick format I get the message "could not complete format". If I choose "slow" format it will format up to 72% and then freeze. If I partition the drive to 1.0 Tbite that portion formats correctly and the drive functions well. If I then try to format the remaining 0.5 Tbite it again says cannot complete or it freezes at 12% respectively. Seagates Diagnostics say the drive is healthy as does Dells diagnostics. Seagate suggested the problem might be the motherboard or Vista. Dell says the motherboard is fine and the XPS should be able to handle 1.5 Tbites. Microsoft have provided a new Vista disk with all the most recent updates and everything else operates very well. They believe the problem is with Dell or Seagate. Any suggestions????

Our Gateway PC is slowing to a crawl. We see 100% disk usage,  but nothing in particular is accessing the disk.  After researching that certain Windows 8.1 Services can cause the issue, I disabled Windows Update, Windows Search and Superfetch which has helped to keep the PC from entirely freezing as was the previous behavior. I ran Seagate tools and the Smart test passed but a few other things failed.  The drive is 1tb and usually comes with a fairly long warranty.  Is the drive covered if it's the issue?  I am not 100% certain the drive is the issue but I should also add that on some reboots I receive an error that the boot drive can't be found, after a power down or two, it finds the drive. Gateway SX2865-UR26  Purchased: 11/2013 Appreciate your advice.

Hello.

I was having troubles with Tapeware, the backup app that shipped with my drive (Seagate STT20000A), but I'm starting to think the problem might be the tape drive itself.

Under Windows 2000 Pro, I deleted the drive from Removable Storage>Physical Locations. When I reboot the drive is listed twice, both occurences with a fat red X through the icon. If I leave it as is and reboot again, there will be four instances of the drive under Removable Storage. Of course, none of them work.

Does anyone have suggestions? Possibly the drivers for the tape drive?

Cheers!
Kevin

A:Problems with Seagate Tape Drive

Hi,

Please let me have an e-mail address by PM.

I have a long e-mail from Seagate detailing issues with this drive.

I'll then send you this e-mail, plus the URL for my own web space where I have a 5 mb ( = 4 floppy disk ) driver file, plus the other two file mentioned below as a zip file.

The file is latest Seagate driver for the STT20000A TBU, I don't use it as XP runs it without any issues. The other two files are a hardware / firmware update and DOS test utility.

OK, So i have an 1.5 External seagate drive that up until now has been running great, the main thing i keep on it is media which i access through a USB 2 connection. as of 2 days ago the drive has been acting funny in the middle of a playback it starts seeking or searching which is the best way that i can describe this. basically the media locks for a second the drive clicks like its searching and then the media restarts a few seconds later. The audio generally keeps going but the video hags during this time. I ran SEAtools looking for drive errors, defraged it, and ran a virus check on the drive to see if maybe i picked up a bug, nothing, i have also updated all my video and audio drivers, and by the time you read this probably the drives drivers also.

Any Ideas?

My seagate expansion desktop external drive seems to be dying. Its only a year old but i've filled it upto 90% of its capacity and that is when the problem started. Drive will show in my computer, disk management and even folders/files are visible/accessible but somehow i cant copy them. If i try copying, i'm slapped with extremely slow transfer speeds as below. Besides that it wont read some of the files so i have to skip them

I have even tried recovery programs and all of them recognized the drive properly but couldnt recover anything. I'm on win7 x64 and I feel there is a problem with the usb enclosure and so i want to pry it open and connect to the computer just like an internal drive. Can i do that without voiding the warranty?

Hi,

I have a 4TB seagate drive that turned RAW today Want me to format it...

After a couple hours of reading, i found that i have the same problem as this guy :

External HDD suddenly requires formatting, read as RAW instead of ntfs

Jumanji helped him alot and in his post (page 6 of the included link), this note seems to be important but i don't know Bootice at all and it's all gibberish to me. Could someone help me understanding what he meant by this :

As a natural corollary of the above exercise I would suggest the following to the OP.

1. Check the last sectors of your Disk from n to n-32 with Bootice. If you find that the GPT backup exists in those sectors, I would say you have struck gold.

2. Save each sector starting from n to n-32.

3. Restore the nth sector to LBA 1 (sector 1), n-1 to LBA 2 and so on till you complete n-32 to LBA 33.

Effectively you would have restored the GPT, and Windows 7 should be able to see your drive as before.

I would be very grateful if someone could do a step by step to do this with pictures maybe using Bootice.

Thank you in advance

Welcome to SevenForums.

My first instruction: Don't panic. Your data is still there.

My second instruction: While you can read as much as you can - I see you reading the thread "Lost Partitions' - do not do anything on your own in a hurry.

I shall be back after another hour.

( you can go to sleep now and see my post tomorrow morning. That also gives me time to compose my post)

Can anyone tell me anything about the Seagate pocket hard drive . I'm looking to buy the 2.5 GB hard drive the Seagate offers. I know Seagate is a reputable business but is there another type of pocket hard drive that you feel is better for the money. Right now the price for this thing is in the $70 range ended by one of acted sooner I could've gotten it for under $70. Can you tell me is there something better for the price?

A:Looking to buy seagate pocket hard drive.

Seagate pocket drives are good but they are not really cost effective comapred to what you can put together yourself. the seagate (and Other) pocket drives are only 4-6gb in size. they are also only about 4800RPM.

in contrast you can guy a 40GB laptop hard drive with an 8Mb cache and 5400 RPM for around 60.00 and a USB 2.0 slim line enclosure for around 10-17 bucks (it is only slightly larger than the Seagate pocket drive.)

so for 70-80 bucks yuo can have a FAST, LARGE compact portable storage device instead of a compact, slow, limited space portable storage device.

you can find all you need at Newegg. and I highly recommend the samsung 40GB 8mb laptop drive.

I have a ASUS Sabertooth 990FX R2.0 motherboard, running Windows 7 home 64bit, With a WD sata drive as the boot drive. I installed a Seagate Barracuda 3TB SATA drive for backup/storage. The problem is that the large backup drive is not seen in "computer". It is seen in device manager as well as in disc management under admin. tools, but only as a partitioned drive between approx. 2 TB and 1TB unallocated. There is no drive letter assigned to this drive under Disc management. Two questions, one, how do I get the 3TB backup drive to be recognized from "computer"? and two, can I format the 3TB drive to only have the one 3TB partition? Thanks so much in advance for all you guys do to help numbnuts like me! Any response is well appreciated!

I have a Seagate FreeAgent Go, external hard drive and it looks just like this.

It has over 200GB of artwork I need for my work and it isn't working on any of my 8 computers in the office.

When I plug it in (USB) it says "Device driver was not installed successfully, device unplugged"

Would this be the usb cord? or would this be something wrong with the hard drive itself?

Don't know exactly what you need, but here are the numbers on it.

The PN: 9KW2AL-502 1 TB

The SN: 2GE925LH

A:Seagate Hard Drive Problems!

Could be a cable or drive issue. As it doesn't appear that it's being recognized or installed properly, it could simply be a faulty enclosure. In which case you could remove the drive from the enclosure (*will VOID your warranty*) and connect it internally, via a USB adapter, or with another enclosure.

And you should have a BACKUP copy of all data that you don't want to lose. If it's important, more than one copy. Live and learn.

I couldve sworn I posted this question over a month ago but I cant find it anywhere. Not surprising, I dont remember where I parked my car. I might have posted it to airheadsЯus.com for all I know. I have several Seagate 3TB STBV3000100 Desktop Expansion drives. I realize this question might be better suited for the Seagate support forums but I get this weird message when i try to login:

Login Error, your attempt using single sign on with an identity provider certificate has failed. Please contact your salesforce.com administrator for more information.

I have absolutely no idea what any of that could possibly mean. But that is neither here or there.* Its just that I am becoming desperate and Im hoping the huge wealth of knowledge here in sevenforums might offer some assistance. The drive has been working fine for over a year (just a little longer than the warranty of course). Suddenly it disappears from the drives listed in Win 7 Pro. I have tried switching out the data and power cables and USB ports and tried this on different Win 7 computers. When it powers on the blue activity light comes on as it should and I can hear it spin up Within a couple of minutes, the light goes off and it spins down. During this period Win 7 does not see it at all. Both the data and power ports seems physically stable from what I can tell from simple observation. I have not taken it apart (yet). If anyone could offer any suggestions on what my next step should be I would be extremely ap... Read more

Hello everyone,

I assume that this issue has been posted multiple times, but I believe my issue is unique. I have a desktop PC running Windows 7, and I am trying to run a 2TB Seagate USB 3.0/2.0 hard drive that I bought today.

My problem is my computer recently got shorted by a power outage or something like that, and I had to replace the USB ports. I now only have 4, so I put an external hub that has 4 ports. I can easily run everything with those 7 ports, except I cannot use USB's or flash drives or hard drives of any kind. It will simply not show up. My current set-up is like so;

(0 means open port, U means used, \ means cord to hub.)

0 U U U
\
0 0 0 0

As you can see, I have left the hub completely unused. This seems to be the best way to do it so far. I can plug the hard drive into the hub and that makes it work, but as you can imagine it is RIDICULOUSLY slow. This is not what I wanted, as I am looking to transfer over 500 gigabytes of data. I have tested the hard drive on a Windows 7 laptop and it worked perfectly.

I know that is not much information, but if you can think of anything please let me know.

Tom.

A:Seagate Hard Drive not registering

Is it a externally AC powered Harddrive? Quite often running a USB drive through a hub causes it to have insufficient power for operation. I'm unsure from your post, but does connecting it to a port directly make it work?

I recently installed a brand spankin new ST3250410AS 250 GB SATA 3.0 gb/s drive, replacing my old ide drive. Windows installed fine. I downloaded and installed all of my asus M2N-SLI chipset drivers as well as video drivers. Everything seems to work fine. However, in my device manager, a device is still listed as missing drivers, and my seagate drive appears to be viewed by windows as an external drive (the safely remove hardware option is shown in the taskbar). Whats the deal? I have installed sata drives before and have not needed any additional drivers other that what comes with the mobo unless running a raid configuration, which in this case i am not.

Additional Note: I like to use usbmrs (usb mouse rate switcher) to force my polling rate up for gaming. I replaced the usbport.sys with an older version and tried running the patch, and it responds with an "unexpected error." Not sure if this is related but this is something i would also like help with.

Any ideas fellas?
