Windows Explorer Is Defaulting "file Folder" File Type For Registration

Q: Windows Explorer Is Defaulting "file Folder" File Type For Registration

Hi all,

I have been hammered by several viruses. The result of the attack is that Windows Explorer now shows the file type for an exe file to be a file folder instead of an application. I assume there is something not right in the registry but I do not know where to start looking. Can anyone help? Thanks very much.

Preferred Solution: Windows Explorer Is Defaulting "file Folder" File Type For Registration

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I'm not sure this is what you are talking about, but you can change the icon:
Tools -> Folder options -> File types
Mark the file and press "advanced".

For the most part, I do not mind Explorer's autodetecting the folder type (Music, Videos, etc). However, one thing that I miss from Windows 7 is being able to set the "style" for a folder type... where I could choose to display certain columns and have Explorer display those columns for all folders of that category.

Does anyone know of a way to set the defaults for a folder category?

Thanks

Hello Everyone,

I have kind of an odd question, I have been looking into changing file type icons when I came across an interesting conflict.
I would like to be able to change the file type icon for all .exe files to the same file type icon within a file explorer. If you were to try to do this, all icons that are associated with each .exe program becomes the same icon no matter where they are located.

The thing is that usually when I am in a file explorer the .exe files are installers and when I have .exe files in places like on my desktop, in the start menu, and in the taskbar, they are for launching already installed programs.

Can anyone think of a possibly way that could solve this conflict easily with some kind of setting or software.

I thought maybe something with shortcuts but that turned out to not work for me.
I also believe that .ico icon files have multiple sizes within them but I don't think there would be a realistic way to edit each of them for all the programs installed.

Has anyone else ever tried something like this? or have any solutions that I am not aware of?
Thank You

A:Changing .exe File Type Icons In File Explorer But Nowhere Else

File Explorer is on Windows 8/8.1, renamed from Windows Explorer on Windows 7 back to Windows95/Windows NT4.

Usually an .exe file for running a program will have its own icon, right-click a Shortcut, Properties, Change Icon to see what the .exe file has in it. Some programs may have a separate icon in their Folder in C:\Program Files or C:\Program Files (x86). If no icons are found Windows will put up a panel with a number of choices but they are more generic, mostly for Windows things.

Installable .exe files will have more of a generic icon and are of only a few types.

I keep losing the icons in Explorer, even with a fresh install of W7. It takes some time, but sooner or later they disappear. It's always Internet Explorer first (associated with .mht files) and now I've lost Chrome (associated with .htm).

Any ideas as to why this happens? Is there any fix you guys know of?

Rebuilding the W7 icon cache has not worked in the past.

Thanks.

A:Lost File Type Icons in Windows Explorer

Hello IveyLeaguer,

The icon cache would have no affect on file associations. They are two different animals.

The most common reason for file association issues is folks changing them using Open with.

If you like, you could use the tutorial below to quickly restore the default association of any file extension.Default File Type Associations - Restore
If you are sure that you or another user is not changing the file associations, then I would recommend to do a full scan of your system with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free to help make sure that your system is clean.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Basically the title. Almost every single time i move ANY file or delete any file, the window im in freezes and the progress bar freezes. Now when i create a new folder the window im in freezes also, but i'd say its only 50% of the time. The temporary solution i found was to go to the task bar, end explorer, and restart it using run. Now when i check back on that folder, whatever action I did (ie delete file) does do what i wanted, its just the freezing. I'm looking for a permanent solution to this and any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Hi erod49, try looking in your error logs. You have given a good discription of the problem. Tel us your system specs as well.

To get into your error logs,

Left Click on Start Menu.
Right click on Computer and choose manage.
Click on the event viewer.
You now have loads of options to try and pin down what is happening.
Expand the error tab.
Look for things in the last 24 hours.

Other things to look for are updates, has an update caused this. Has your computer autoupdated any of the motherboard drivers.
Have you tried to restore the computer before the error started or has it always been like that.

I have a lot of music files. I have ended up with many duplicates, perhaps because when I was learning Windows I didn't quite understand the filing system. To date, I am not sure I do! The column # which states the 'Track Number' which to me is undesirable (I have no use for it), seems to be my problem! When there is a track number - it seems to put it first before all else in the 'Title', namely before the title of the song or the name of the Band.... thereby sorting instead of the title of the song, it sorts by the Track number. Even if I change the defaults and take out the Track # column, it doesn't seem to make a difference when sorting - it still insists on sorting by Track number. The only way I can change this, it seems, is by going into each and every individual file property and physically changing this! I hasve already put many hours into this, and it still seems to be an overwhelming job! Is this not what computers are for, to make life easier.
MY QUESTION; IS THERE A WAY TO GET THE FOLDER OPTIONS TO CHANGE ALL THE FILE PROPERTIES IN THE PARTICULAR FOLDER TO DELETE THE TRACK NUMBER (#) INSTEAD OF ME DOING IT SINGULARLY? IS THERE A DOS COMMAND THAT CAN DO THIS?

You might find comparisons of the utilities in places like PCMag.com or just search on "best free Windows tag editor". I have a nice sort tool called Fat Sorter but it only works on FAT partitions. The idea being to force a USB stick to sort according to file name. I don't know if there is a similar utility for NTFS.

Its really hard to understand what it is you want the way you are typing and skipping words that would make up a legible sentence. I literally read your questions (?) as many different ways as possible. All I can conclude is that you would like to hide certain folders when your external (or network) drive is plugged into your system?

Can you right click on specific folders and tick them as hidden? Then make sure in "folder options" you have selected "Don't show hidden folders & drives"

Is this what you are asking buddy?

Hello Tendoncs, I don't think that's possible in Windows XP, but I'm not 100% sure either. I will look more on this. You may use the parental control feature to give other users less access, but editing the registry for your cause is beyond me.I have not used this method, but you may want to have a look here:http://en.kioskea.net/forum/affich-45891-how-to-restrict-access-to-a-folderThe DOS method should work (be very careful here), but it would still rely on user access. There are some programs that will claim to do what you have asked, but I do not recommend them.Either way, I don't think this will answer your question, but I hope this helps!bloopie

An application I have running on a Windows 2000 Advanced Server had an odd occurrence the other day. A folder changed properties after a file was copied to it by a DOS Copy command.

Here's the scoop:
An empty text file called HL7Rejct.txt is kept in a folder called D:\data\default\errors and each day it's copied to another folder called D:\data\errors. The command that is executed is as follows:

copy "D:\data\default\errors\HL7Rejct.txt" "D:\data\errors"

Nothing too fancy or complicated. The other day when this command executed the rest of my application failed on trying to write another file to the D:\data\errors folder. Why? Because it was no longer a folder! It had changed such that it now had a file type of "file". I deleted and recreated the folder and things have gone fine since then.

But I'm a bit worried. Has anyone heard of this happening before? Is this a bug perhaps that there is a fix available for?

Thanks.

A:DOS Copy Changes Folder File Type

I have seen this once or twice, no rhyme or reason. The "solution" is to be very explicit in the command as it is interpreting the copy operation to copy the file over "D:\data\errors" instead of into it. Use the command:

copy "D:\data\default\errors\HL7Rejct.txt" "D:\data\errors\HL7Rejt.txt"

I know you shouldn't have to be that explicit, but every now and then, it thinks it is smarter than you and gets it wrong.

This enables one to carry on using the computer.

Ways to prevent:

I have been told and have found what seems to be the solution:
Type run in the search programs and files(bottom right) click run, enter MSCONFIG, go to startup tab and disable programs that may be causing the problem.
I am not sure I have found the problem program causing this yet but I have disabled a couple of startup programs and the right click freeze seems to be happening less now??

Hello,
I hope this is the right place to post this. If not, please let me know where is.
A friend just showed me a weird problem he is having with his computer. He is using Windows 7 pro, and has a folder under My Documents, in which he keeps his work files. He emails these files using Gmail, which he accesses via Internet Explorer.

All worked fine until a few days ago, when he noticed that when he clicked the link in Gmail to attach a file, his folder wasn't listed in the Open File dialog. He looked in Windows Explorer, and could see the folder OK. I tried opening Word and using the Open
File dialog there, and the folder wasn't visible.

If he clicks in the address bar, and adds the folder name to the path, it opens the folder, but shows it as empty. I actually has two subfolders. If he adds the name of a subfolder, then the Open File dialog shows the files in that folder.

I checked the permissions on the folder, and couldn't see anything odd. What I don't understand is how the folder can be visible in Windows Explorer, and not in the Open File dialog.

Anyone any ideas? Thanks

Rightclick on the folder where you can actually find it in Explorer, look at the path. That is where it now resides.

If it cannot be found there when browsing in from Computer>C then I'd back up the files in it to a new folder you temporarily create in C root, delete the problem file and recreate it.

Hi,

I did some messing around with new Themes, and found it annoyingly more complicated than in the XP days, so I used a theme installer, its safe, didn't mess up one thing. But the themes I got didn't please me as planned so I went back to my default Aero Landscape theme. Except one thing changed seemingly forever and I can't change it because Aero ignores change one makes to colors and such apparently.

The change that is left is pictured in the attached picture. When in explorer, when I selected a file or multiple files, a blue rectangle would appear over it, right, like a marker. Now it's just these slightly visible blue lines around a selected file as you can see. I thought putting back the usual theme I use would fix it, but it didn't. Please tell me those new themes or the theme installer (which when uninstalling it, undid the changes it had done) caused this. It's so annoying, I can barely see if what I selected was indeed selected.

Hi. I was just playing some of my MP3's in my My Music folder and I noticed that there were some strange and unrecognized files in that folder. As a matter of fact, it looked like it had made one file for each and every MP3 file that I had. I tried to open the file and it was not immediately recognizable what program should be used so I clicked Use Web Service to Find Program or something and it took me to Microsoft which gave me more information. Microsoft informed me that this file type is not recognized by Windows and did not give me much more information than that. However, it did refer to me to a website that has an archive of file types. So, I went to the website. Again, the file type was unknown. I figured that surely this file type must be something that is for some use. Surely it is used by some program I own. Hello,

I have a very odd and troubling issue. A Windows 7 Pro computer is joined to our domain. A new person logged into it and is unable to access our share where we store user personal folders. "My Documents" is typically redirected there

I removed from domain and reset the AD object and then re-added the computer to the domain and issue persists.

Icon Cache - Rebuild

I've been doing a lot of tidying up of my file types and associations, and one of the things that I have done is to ensure that all my most used file types have meaningful and accurate "friendly names". So, instead Explorer referring to .wv files as "WV File" it now says "WavPack Audio File". I've done this for numerous file types and it has all worked well and is correctly displayed in Explorer.

However, I also use Windows Libraries, and for some reason it is still using generic file descriptions, or older ones that I chose myself and subsequently updated.

I have done the usual things of clearing the icon cache and all other cache and temp storage. I've also completely rebuilt the index of the Library in question. I have even removed all folders from that library and deleted the top level library itself (then, after a reboot, recreated it by selecting 'Restore Default Libraries'), but as soon as I add my folder to the Library, the same old file names show up again.

I have done a thorough search of my Registry and some of the terms being displayed by the Library are nowhere to be found in the Registry (because I have updated every possible instance of the file type name) so it must be cached somewhere, unless its buried in some indecipherable format in the Registry that doesn't show up in search results.

If I click an incorrectly named 'file types' group in the Library, and then choose 'Open Folder Location' to look at the same files direct... Read more

A:Windows Explorer "Libraries" displaying wrong File Type names

This could have something to do with your user files. Are you the Administrator of this computer & do you only have one user account?.

Click on Computer & then click on your main OS drive which is normally C:\, then click Users, which should show your user name as one of the folders. Click on that & select your Documents files & see if the new names are listed there, if so you can create a New Library by clicking on Include in Library, from the menu at the top, & selecting Create New Library.

If all the Documents are correct as mentioned above you could copy all the Documents into the New library & then after checking everything is correct you can delete the old library.

If you have more that one user account, it's possible that all the changes are being made on one account & you are then trying to access them on another account, so you keep getting the old arrangement.

I've found a beatifully simple new file manager to use as an alternative to explorer.exe as a step beyond just using an alternative shell.
But, the program is so beautifully simple, it comes not as an install, but a zip. It does not alter any registry files; in fact, the author suggests that you can keep it on a pen drive, and use it anywhere.
I know some alternative FM's install and default themselves as the new FM, but this one does not. Is there a way to do it by hand?

I need to change a zip file to an epub file. I have heard this can be done, but when I add the .epub after the file name, I notice the file is still actually zip type file when I right click properties. This is causing a problem when I try to open it in in different ebook reader programs.

I know there is a way to change a file's actual file type, but I don't know how. Perhaps there is a software or I need to go into the registry?

I can do this either with windows 7 or XP home, because I have two computers. So help on either operating system would be great?

As a related question, I am wondering does changing a file's icon type actually change the file type or just the icon?

A:How do I change a file's file type (not only file association)?

Hi awd and welcome to Seven Forums.

I take it that your zip file is an e-book. Changing the extension does nothing to change the format of the data. If you have need to convert an e-book from one format to another try Calibre. In addition to managing e-books it allows you to convert from one form to another. calibre - E-book management

Hi All
I have a rather large file system with lots of folders & subfolders. When I want to save previously on Xp operating system I'd search in explorer open the folder I want then copy the address (e.g c:\customer records\client name\job address).
In windows 7, when I copy the folder address i get this "search-ms:displayname=Search%20Results%20in%20electronic%20files&crumb=location:S%3A%5CSEQ%5C011_Estimating %5Celectronic%20files\CHERMSIDE , 17 smith ST"

As you can imagine I cant paste that into a save as field and expect it find the folder location.

Does someone know if it can do what I want? keeping in mind this is about time saving and productivity exercise so I need a simple solution. It is also on a work computer so a lot of settings are locked.

Appreciate any help

Contradictory file dates in Windows 7 File Explorer when I use "Search My Documents" with *.docx

I modified a Word file earlier today. When I view the file in File Explorer the correct file date/time is displayed, however when I search for Word files by entering *.docx in the "Search My Documents" box (in upper right hand side of the File Explorer window) all Word files are displayed but this file shows a very different and contradictory date/time. The date/time in this case happens to be is 5 days earlier ? a date/time consistent with when I worked on it last week ? instead of when I modified it today. And yes, there is no question about this being the same file.

This is not just a one time occurrence or a one folder situation. In File Explorer for other files in other folders this same contradictory dating situation occurs. Namely; a file with the latest modified date/time shows the wrong date/time when it is searched for using the "Search My Documents" feature in File Explorer. I cannot say whether this situation is restricted only to Word files, but that is only where I have always encountered it because I work with Word files a lot.

This has detrimentally affected me because one time I thought I had totally lost an important file and beganworking again with an older and obsolete version of the file and had to redo a lot of work.

What is the cause of this? Is this a known bug?

A:Contradictory file dates in Windows 7 File Explorer when I use search

The Windows Index needs to be rebuilt. Better yet, if you have a fast computer you can turn indexing off so you don't get bitten by this "service". You can also use a different search program such as Ultra File Search.

To rebuild the index, open:
Control Panel > All Control Panel Items
Click on Indexing Options
Click the Advanced button
Click the Rebuild button

Is it possible to sort a folder's contents with both File names and Sub-Folder names intermixed?
I have projects in sub-folders, and 'support' files like this:

projabc (sub-folder)
projabc.txt (file)
projabc.bat (file)

amongst other projects.
I would like all the 'projabc...' items to appear together.

Thanks.

A:File Explorer Sort File names With Sub-Folder names

I don't know of a way to get Windows Explorer to do it. But XPlorer2 is supposed to have that sorting mode.
Edit: scroll down to "Folders sorted" in the table.

Hello all , i am new to batch programming.

I wish to have a batch file to read .apk file from folder and then copy it to another folder. Then it should rename the copied apk file to test.apk

eg:
i have a file in folder e:\apps\angrybirds.apk , I want to copy this angrybirds.apk to d:\apps and rename it to test.apk

Here the file names in the e:\apps\ will be changing. So what ever may be the name , it should read the name of the file from e:\apps\ folder , copy it to d:\apps\ and rename it to "test.apk" . Test.apk is a fixed rename

More as an alternative to twiddling my thumbs than anything else, I tried to produce a batch file that would count up the number and size of files in a folder, as well as the number and size of files with each extension. Hence it would say how many word documents I have and how much space they're taking up, etc.

I've managed to get a vaguely working model, but the output formatting is terrible (I just wanted it to say X bytes in Y "Z" Files, none of that ugly dotted variable names) and I have failed to get it to equate .htm and .html, .jpg and .jpeg, etc.
Code:
@ECHO OFF
REM THIS BATCH FILE ITTERATES THROUGH ALL THE SUBFOLDERS AND FILES IN A FOLDER (IDEALLY A DRIVE)
REM IT TOTALS THE NUMBER OF FILES CONTAINED IN THAT FOLDER, AND THE SIZE OF THOSE FILES.
REM IT ALSO TOTALS THE NUMBER AND SIZE OF FILES WITH EACH EXTENSION IT ENCOUNTERS.
REM ALL INFORMATION IS THEN PRINTED TO THE SCREEN AND FTYPEDST.TXT

IF EXIST FTypeDst.txt ERASE FTypeDst.txt
ECHO. >FTypeDst.txt
ATTRIB +A FTypeDst.txt

ECHO SCANNING FILE TREE FOR FILE EXTENSION DISTRIBUTION
ECHO Please Wait Paitently. . .

(SET /A ALLNUMBER = 0) & (SET /A ALLSIZE = 0)

REM cycle through the current directory and subs, Increment Allnumber, Allsize, define and increment Number of * files, size of * files.
FOR /R %%F in (*) DO (
SET /A ALLNUMBER += 1
SET /A ALLSIZE += %%~ZF

You would be better off using third party software that already does this. Plenty of them out there.
I personally would check the extension of each file using the cmd extensions of a for loop. then do an if statement for each file type you want to keep track of. then use a call statement to branch to a function that adds up the file sizes and number of files.
