How do I recover my corrupted JPEG?

Q: How do I recover my corrupted JPEG?

Hi everyone. A few weeks ago, I had to format my computer due to a possible virus. Basically whatever infected my computer slowed me down so badly that I couldn't back up anything at all but a few pics. At first I thought that all three pics were unrecoverable because I kept getting an error when trying to move them from the floppy to my hard drive. However, last night I tried to move them individually and it worked. There was one file that couldn't be "moved". However, if I copied and pasted it, it would work. Only one problem, this one file was also corrupted. I messed around for a while and ran Disk Checker and let it fix any errors on the floppy before trying to copy and paste it back to the hard drive again but it did not work. It did change the picture to where instead of only being able to see the top 1/2 inch of the picture, I was able to see the whole thing. Unfortunately, it was still corrupted and kind of messed up looking. It was blue shaded and it looked like part of the picture had been copied and pasted to the side of it.

Now here's the thing that makes me feel like this image might be recoverable. The thumbnail is perfectly fine. It's the image itself that doesn't appear to be working. Is there any possible way to recover this image considering that the thumbnail is still fine? Now, I don't know much about picture recovery but I would think that since the thumbnail is ok then the pic itself is ok as well but the data has somehow been skewed or something.

Anyway, any help would be greatly appreciated because this is one of only three pics that I have my best friend and I have no hard copy of the pic. Please help!

Preferred Solution: How do I recover my corrupted JPEG?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi All!
Can anyone tell me if it is possible to repair corrupted JPEG files, such is this example: corrupted JPEG ??
The memory card suddenly stucked in my digital camera, and the only way to recover the data was to use some soft designated for this, but unfornately most of the pictures were corrupted like this.
I have tried various programs to recover datas from card but the result was always the same .
But I know that there is a chance to correct these corrupted JPEG's, as one soft for recovering damaged JPEG recovered some parts of the picture, not the whole - just some fragments, but anyway.
Somehow to change the binary code.....

Any advise will be appreciated!

I have a Sony Mavica Digital Camera (Burns pics directly to mini CD-R/W, no flash memory slots). In an accident some of the film/dye near the outer rim of a CD-R got scratched off. Of course some data was lost, but the inner 2/3 of the CD was not damaged. I used BadCopy (a data recovery program) to recover many of these pictures.

Now I have a folder full of recovered pictures, but every single one is messed up. The thumbnails are fine, but when I open the file, parts of the image are shifted around and colors distorted. For example:
(sorry for the long downloads, but image info was lost when I tried resized it)

The top 2/3 of each picture was fine, bottom 1/3 seems to be shifted left a little, then the part cut out warps around to the right. Every recovered picture had similar problems.

Any ideas?? Thumbnails are fine for some reason.

Appreciate your help,

I took VERY IMPORTANT pictures with my new Canon PowerShot SX160 IS using an old, generic 32gb memory card (that I've never had any problems with). While taking pictures last Saturday, suddenly the playback wouldn't work. Got home, popped the memory card in and all the pictures I took were gone.

I ran a recovery program and 1/2 the files came back no problem (THANK GOD). The other 1/2 are corrupted ( ).

I have found several programs out there that run, show me the preview (YEAH, HOPE!!) and then want BIG MONEY to actually recover the files.

My question comes down to this - are there any free programs, what is the best out there to fix/recover these corrupted files?

I have a large collection of jpg files that I get off my Nikon D-SLR. After transferring them to my hard-drive and resizing using photoshop CS3, I keep them in D:\My Documents\My Pictures . I also e-mailed the pictures to friends. A few weeks later, I go to view the pictures and some of them won't load. In Windows "Picture Viewer" it just spends minutes "Generating Preview" when other not corrupted files are opened within a second. More importantly, when it finally opens the pictures half the photo loads and the rest of the picture is solid gray (what I'm calling corruption). The back-up files (DVD) and copies i've sent to friends do not have this problem. Not sure if it's a virus. Any ideas? Thanks a lot.

I was downloading some wallpapers when I encountered a couple with really long filenames and wouldn't open. When I went to delete them, it wouldn't let me and right click doesn't work on them. But it does on all other files.

I tried a random file remover, but it said the name was too long, so I punched the name in manually. It said it removed them, but they're still there. I went into safe mode and same issue occurs.

What are my options? =(

All I had to do was rename the folder the file was stored in, then the file was able to be removed.

Hi. My computer was infected around Nov 2011 and came back from the repair in December. Everything in my hardrive seemed to be backed up properly. Are these images lost for good or is there any way to get them back?

File corruption is common.

The only tool which I know of that attempts to correct corrupted files...would be the chkdsk /r command. Have you run that on the partition/drive in question?

I have a Dell Inspiron E1505 laptop. A couple of days ago I tried to open an excel file that I regularly use and when I opened it, all cells were blank except A1. In it was "FileError_22001. I start to investigate and every excel file is the same. Furthermore, all of my word & picture files have the same problem. All my excel files are 18 KB, all my word files are 20 KB. They are all time stamped with the exact same time.

I have McAfee that is provided by my employer but I discovered that it had not been updated in some time for some unknown reason. I called our IT folks yesterday morning and they tried to get me fixed but were unable to and had to pass the ticket up to the next level. They were unable to get the virus stuff working again either.

Whatever I got infected with turned off my McAfee firewall, then started corrupting all of my excel, word and picture files. It did not corrupt any files in my recycle bin. I tired to do a system restore to the day before the problems started but it didn't help. Turns out whatever got loaded probably happened the day before all the bad stuff started happening. So, I unrestored the restore that I did the first time and did a system restore to December 1st instead. It did not help and created more problems for me. I keep getting these pop ups, one after another.

I would attach screen shots of the errors but I can't figure out how to do it.

I recently bought a new computer (XP Media Center Edition, Dell XPS600) and unfortunately I'm having some problems already. One of them is with JPEG images I view while browsing the Internet. About half the images I view will partially change colors and become distorted. Occasionally, I can just click 'back' and reload the page the image is on, and it will be fine... but more often than not, I can't restore the original image without deleting the JPEG from the temporary internet files folder. Here's an example:

The original JPEG should look like this:

Several instances of clicking 'back' and reloading the page led to these images:

I haven't noticed the distortion problem with images of other types (bmp, png, gif) but it seems that these types have some problems displaying - about half the time I try to view them, the images do not load and display the "not available" logo. I don't know if these incidents are related to my problem with JPEGs.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated...

Hi, and welcome to TSF!
Does this only happen in Internet Explorer? Have you tried FireFox? I would guess that if it works in FireFox, that there is something wrong with IE and a repair install might be the solution. Also, have you done any virus/malware scans lately?

I've recently returned from holiday and took photos on my digital camera using a mini-SD card in an adaptor to make it normal sized. When I came to move these pictures on to my laptop, I did this by putting the mini-SD card into my phone and connecting it. Before copying all the files on to my laptop I browsed through them on the laptop screen but still stored on the phone (acting as a mass storage device), which I now wish I hadn't! Suddenly the pictures stopped previewing and the system crashed, and on reloading the SD card had become unreadable, Windows and my phone telling me it was unformatted. I recovered the files using PC Inspector File Recovery, but my main problem now is they won't open - opening them in any application comes up with a message along the lines of "No preview available" or "This is not a valid bitmap file, or its format is not supported". I've tried some programmes on the basis that the files' attributes have been corrupted in some way, but as yet no luck. I'd really like to be able to open the files - it's annoying having them available but not being able to open them or even preview them, so any ideas would be appreciated.

To sum up my problem: I have a host of unopenable JPEG files - is there any way I can get them open in any form?

Thanks in advance.

A:Photos (JPEG) corrupted after transfer from SD Card

What photo editing software do you use?
Have you had any luck downloading any of the images.
If it is the chip, you have little hope, as those mini SD chips can be so very fragile. If it was caused by the camera, you may have.
Have you attempted to download them through a good USB card reader, or a system mini SD reader apart from the Camera

Hello, just got this laptop. It came with ubuntu, but loaded Win 7 64bit on it. All drivers on place. It works alright, but noticed this nasty bug that is driving me mad: It shows corrupted thumbnails on "big" jpgs. It can show huge tiff files (like 200mb and big resolution) as thumbnail, but it seems to really struggle with jpegs bigger than 1500px which is silly. Please dont refer me to Windows support forum, because i have seen people ask for help on similar issues and they just copy and paste responses that arent even helpful. I have seen good answers here so i think you guys might know whats up. Thanks!

Symantec Powerquest Drive Image 7 corrupted thousands of my jpeg photos!

I am desperate to restore a few thousand corrupted jpeg photo files. They include many treasured photos from weddings, Christenings, holidays, birthdays, kidsí activities and so much more.

This is how they became corrupted:

I backed up my desktop hard drive to an external hard drive using Symantec Powerquest Drive Image 7. Later, when I restored my desktop hard drive from the backup, my photos did not restore fully. They werenít all corrupted, but probably 95% of them were. The photos show maybe a half, a third or even less of the photo. The rest of the photo is black or grey or otherwise gone or distorted somehow. All thumbnail images are whole and appear to be fine. Drive Image 7 has also appeared to erase the date/time stamp most of the photos also.

I donít know if the photos didnít backup properly or if they just didnít restore properly. I hoped it just didnít restore properly because I still have the backup file and maybe I can still recover. Unfortunately, I think it didnít backup properly to begin with. I only say this because Iíve tried several times to restore the backup file using Drive Image in a desperate attempt to recover the entire image but I had no luck doing so.

Iíve also tried a few freeware or shareware photo restoration programs on the corrupt files but had no luck yet. One of the programs I tried, JPEG Recovery, did not correct the problem. However a message appeared... Read more

A:Backup utility corrupted my jpeg files. Please offer advice

Unfortunately it seems all the methods you've tried for recovery are corroborating with each other and indicating that the backup was corrupt. Have you tried the PowerQuest Drive Image 7 Backup Image Browser to just open and view individual pictures that you know to be otherwise corrupted?

And what about the original photos? Where they all overwritten by a complete drive image restore or something like that? I ask because if there's any chance they might have been deleted but not overwritten, those might be your best chance with recovery software.

I'm really sorry for your loss if it turns out that way, my Mom has about 6,000 photos and most of them are crap, but it would be really hard to take if about a thousand of them disappeared so I never use any backup program that isn't completely transparent. I know you will never trust Drive Image again but don't trust any backup software that you can't verify the contents of simply by browsing to the backup with windows explorer and opening any file there at any time, and never only make one backup. You need at least two to actually have a backup when one set is lost or destroyed, and one of those two sets should be stored off-site.

I've included a link to a powerful data recovery program http://www.runtime.org/ but in your case it won't do you much good if all it recovers are corrupted or partial images. Good luck.

Hi everybody,
I have got a big trouble. Last week I've been infected by a pack of several trojans. As a result, all of my jpeg, pdf, word, excel and video files have been modified/corrupted in such way it cannot be opened.
I think I have get rid of the trojans by using Adwcleaner, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and Hitman Pro 3.7. These damaged files are not encrypted and there have not  been showed any message asking for money at all.
Well, I am very concerned about my files since I have not made any backup of my system and the trojan disabled the system restore option. I have been able to activate it again but all the restoration points have been deleted and the shadow copies as well.
I've got the three log files generated by the programs described above. Here you are an advance of the trojans founded:
Mbam: Sathurbot, Hijack.SecurityRun, Agent.ED, Tinba
Hitman Pro: Injector, VBKryjetor, Zusy.
Please, help me. I am lost and do not know what to do.

I realized that there are a few BIOS updates, after my version (1.26) that seem to offer performance inmprovements. I probably need those, since my brother has a laptop with identical specs to mine, but his runs faster in games. I made sure I have proper drivers and all that stuff, but his is still faster. I also know that if a BIOS update fails, I'll have an expensive brick. I'd rather not have that, so before doing the update, I want to be sure I can recover my computer.

I know I did 2 things wrong:
1) I didn't back up my hard drive
2) I turned off my computer in the middle of a Windows update

That being said, here is the story:

I had a 4 year old machine with XP loaded, and got a shiny new computer for Christmas (2010). I was in a hurry to swap the computers, and figured I could transfer the data later. So, while I was logging out of the old XP computer, I saw that a Windows update was installing. Snickering, I figured I would never need the computer again, and SHUT THE POWER OFF. After much research, and lots of regret, I understand I should never have done that.

When I tried to boot the old XP computer back up to transfer the data, it went into an endless boot/power off loop. Trying to boot in safe mode did not work. All options tried, including boot from a previous time, boot from last known good point, etc. Just a continuous boot/power off cycle.

I bought a IDE/SATA to USB cable which comes with a hard drive power supply, opened the hood, and hooked up the hard drive to my new computer.

[caveat: I did this the previous day to my 7 year old computer running Win98 and it worked perfectly]

I open the My Computer folder, plug in the USB, and 1st the recovery portion of the XP hard drive appears, then another hard drive appears (J:). The status bar progresses like it's loading data, then just stops. I left it for hours, no progress. I unhooked everything, powered down, and tried again, same result.

Zero Assumption Recovery (ZAR) might do it. If Windows will recognize the disk, which yours is, ZAR claims it can recover files off the disk. This includes deleted files. You can download it for free and try it out. It has a limitation of four folders it will recover until you purchase a license but that will give you chance to find out if the drive is recoverable. I've used it twice. Once on a camera module and once on a crashed disk. It worked pretty darn good and I was able to recover hundreds of photos and files. I think it paid for itself. On files that have had the index deleted or corrupted, it will assign the file a number id but that's better than loosing the file. It works from the inside out and walks the disk as it analyzes the data. It's worth a try.

Download critical data recovery software - computer data recovery with ZAR.

Okay, here's the deal, my iPod was plugged into my computer, my computer decided to have a laugh and crash on me. It restarted itself and while the computer was starting up, the "Do Not Connect" message disappeared from my iPod and the regular menu appeared, and (perhaps stupidly) I disconnected my iPod from the computer.

Now when I turn on the iPod, I cannot access any of my songs or anything, it is as if the iPod is blank, however there has been no change in hard disk space, so it's all still there in some form, however I can no longer access the iPod through iTunes.

When I plug it in, Windows asks me if I want to scan and fix it, when I click ok, it goes through a long process of checking and then freezes when the progress bar is nearly at the end.

I all hope lost? What should I do?

You had (2) 3 terabyte drives and you put them in your computer. After installing them in your PC did you go to your bios and define the raid volume of those two drives?

hi guys,

i have a server running backup exec 11d and i think the sql database for bkupexec is corrupted. i.e. when i go into backupexec it comes up with the connect to mediaserver box, services are running, but i put in the password and it comes up with an error saying

"The connection to the Backup Exec database has been lost. Make sure that network cables are properly attached and plugged in, and that services are running for the SQL Server instance on which the Backup Exec
database is installed"

i have checked the services, restarted services etc but still no luck!!!

anyone had this before?

A:Solved: Recover Corrupted SQL Database

OK, so i used beutil.exe to repair, didn't work, so i went through some of the other bits in there and eventually moved the database to a different sql server instance and was able to recreate and repair there.

Hi Guys,

I had backed up my documents on an encrypted partition on an external HDD, and had to format my drive and reinstall.

I the restored my dox from the ext HDD to my laptopn and then formatted the ext HDD and backed up my dox to the ext HDD.

Now I've discovered that I can't open pdfs (Adobe reader says file is corrupted). I also can't open the .docx files.

ANY way of recovering these files - especially the pdfs?

A:Need to recover corrupted pdfs, XLS, docx

The type of file is irrelevant. How did you encrypt the partition on the external hard drive? Using what software? How do you know the files are corrupted versus them simply being encrypted?

I have a DELL 660s which no longer boots after a failed windows 10 install.  Unfortunately, it's just a few months out of warranty.
When I power the computer on the fan starts and I see a brief period of hard drive activity but the screen doesn't activate - just a blank, black screen.  I don't even see the DELL logo and I'm unable to access BIOS.
I believe the BIOS firmware was corrupted by the failed Windows 10 install.  I've tried removing the CMOS battery overnight but this didn't help.  At this point I believe I need to flash stable firmware onto the BIOS chip, which is all the more difficult since the computer won't boot and I can't access BIOS.
Based on my research manufacturers of BIOS chips often include emergency recovery procedures to fix corrupted BIOS firmware.  For example the manufactuer AMI includes an embedded "boot block" which can sometimes be used to boot from floppy / flash usb and install new firmware even when the existing BIOS firmware is corrupted.  See: https://techjourney.net/recover-or-undo-corrupt-ami-bios-flash-update/
I'd like to try something like this but I don't know where to start.  I guess the first thing I need to know is who is the manufacturer of the BIOS chip in my DELL 660s computer?  Can anyone help me answer this question?
I found one vague reference on google that mentions AMI is the manufacturer but I'm not sure if the source is accur... Read more

A:Recover Corrupted BIOS Firmware

I wanted to add that I've downloaded the BIOS install file from Dell's website for the 660s.  The filename is named "Inspiron 660s Vostro 270s A11 BIOS.exe".
I've read online that I may need to extract the rom or header file from this executable file but I've been unsuccessful in doing that.  The example I've seen say to run the executable file from the command line with the /writeromfile or /writehdrfile flags.
When I try this nothing happens except that I receive an error message stating this is not a DELL computer (I'm running the executable file from my HP laptop).

So I purchased a usb enclosure thingy megingy and hooked up my laptop HD ( the bad one ) to my desktop. I can access the HD just fine but I can't see all the files. when I hover the mouse over the drive it shows 13GB used but when I actually go into the HD no folder even comes close to having that much data. some are just empty or just don't show up.

I have a 4GB Verbatim SD card that I used in my digital camera. Today, I realized that all the pictures that were there in the SD card are gone! When I try to see the pics in the camera itself, The camera says " No data in Image File". I connected the SD Card to my Desktop using a card reader but still, The folder which includes the images does not open. The error message says " J:\DCIM\108NIKON is not accessible. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable."

I have some really important pictures and data on the SD Card so i can't format. Neither can I risk data loss. I want to recover all the data from the card. Is there a way to do it? Please Help...

Hi everyone!
Could someone inform software that are proven, can recover corrupted Office files.
Remembering that even using the Office 2013, could not correct them.
Grateful for the attention!

A:Corrupted files Office - How to recover them

Well...files which are corrupted are damaged...there is no guarantee or expectation that can undo that.
Typically, if the files are program or system files...the user can uninstall/reinstall the application or run the Windows tools which attempt to deal with file corruption.
If the files are data files used by a given program...IME, the only tool available that may work would be the chkdsk /r command.
Data-recovery software is pretty much designed to copy files which are otherwise inaccessible...it cannot repair corrupt/damaged files.  At best, it will copy those files to a new location.
I'm curious as to how you know that the files are damaged...and what type of files are they?

I did a bad thing. I was attempting to create a new external network switch for my wireless NIC in order to allow an existing VM to connect via WiFi. The process was running interminably, however, and I needed to get on with things, so I killed the MMC task and hard-rebooted the system. (I know, ill-advised.)

Since then, I've been unable:

To remove Hyper-V completely from the system (so as to be able to start over from scratch). Windows rejects the requested update upon re-boot.To create any new network switches of any kind, via either PowerShell or the Hyper-V management console.
The message is 'Failed while creating virtual Ethernet Switch', followed by GUID gobbledy-gook and the message 'the data is invalid'.

Do I need to completely re-install Windows 8.1 Pro to fix this, or is there some sort of "reset Hyper-V to square one" option I can use to force things back to square one?

A:Win8 Hyper-V corrupted - how to recover?

Hi there and welcome to Eight Forums!

That's a nasty problem you've got there. So you can't uninstall the software and you can't add another Virtuall Ethernet Switch.

Well...I've never encounterd this issue before so I think a little "trail and error" are needed here. Please do try the following options and post back your results so I may help you further if needed.
1. Reboot Windows and start in SAFE MODUS (use F8 during startup). Then try to uninstall Hyper-V;
2. If this doesn't work you might try the 'good old' DISM and SFC. See the following tutorials for more info and a 'how to'.
DISM - Fixing Component Store Corruption in Windows 8
SFC /SCANNOW Command - Run in Windows 8

I hope this will help. If not I hope to hear from you soon.

I keep backups of my data on CD-R,  by simply copying files or directories to a CD-R.
I needed to go back a couple of years to pull off a backup - so the disc copy was probably created using Windows XP.
Using Windows 7,  I stuck in the disc opened the directory in WIndows Explorer,  couldn't find the file I was after,  so ejected the disk and tried another,  then another.  There was no problems at this point,  the directories
on the CD-R's were perfectly readable.
When I re-inserted a disk to to check again for the file,  Roxio fired up asking me if I wanted to burn a file to the disk (a system config file).   The whole of the directory structure had gone and Windows would not read it.    Same
for all the other disks  I'd cycled through.
If I read the disks with ISOBuster,  the directory structure and files are still available on the disc's,  it's just that Roxio fires up ready to write a file and Windows Explorer can't read the directory structure  on the disc.  It's
as though the disk is blank.
A) What went wrong?
B) How do I fix it so Windows can read the directories (that are clearly still there!)

I really don't want to have to use ISO buster to recover the files -

I recently tried to restart my computer and was given an error message saying that the \windows\system32\config\system was corrupt or missing, keeping me from booting up my computer. After some research I found out that to fix it you need to run the Recovery Console from the original boot disk, but I DO NOT HAVE THIS DISK!

This is an old computer (from 2002) that is running on Windows XP Home Edition, and the disk was lost many years ago, but I need to get it running again. I understand that there are some ISO images that I can use to create a new backup disk, but I cannot find any and many places say to not trust them. Does anyone have any suggestions to help me get this thing running again? I need to access the computer ASAP!

I'm fighting against a Registry error at boot of Windows XP, on a notebook.
After Windows Logo loadbar, on Windows XP Home sp2, i get the error

STOP: C0000218 {Registry File Failure} The registry cannot load the hive (file): \systemroot\system32\config\SOFTWAREClick to expand...

I tried everything:
- sobstitute the hive file SOFTWARE (and SYSTEM) with the original one (I loose everything)
- remove a wireless device that made crash the system even before this problem
- use CCleaner to execute an integrity check and repair the registry
- use a restore point (but I don't have none valid)
- manually copy the SOFTWARE hive from a non-visible restore point
- execute a checkdisk outside the notebook (on another PC)
- execute "sfc /scannow" command to restore the system files (and registry maybe?)

Nothing worked.

My only chance is to find the keys & values that are causing the problem in the registry hive.

Notice that I don't get any error if I reboot in Safe Mode with Network.

What else can I do?

Can I try something else before formatting?
I have to repair before tomorrow .....

Thanks for any help,

A:Recover from corrupted registry hive (SOFTWARE)

Check suggestions here..

You will need a Usb Dvd drive.

Formatting may be your only option.
Most Notebooks have a recovery partition - an F key at start up.
All data, files will be lost, as it returns the system back to factory settings.

I still have a corrupted SDcard that contains images of families 3 years ago. The last action was viewing images and let windows load thumbnails without touching anything, and the sdcard suddenly got corrupted for no reason. Today, when i connect the SDCard in a machine running Windows 10, it cause explorer.exe to freeze which makes me impossible to fix bad sectors. I tried many programs but none of them work

Do you know which program to recover corrupted SDcard that is not being read or recognized by Windows?

Are there any tools available to recover a corrupted PowerPoint file? My wife had spent about a week putting one together and (luckily) when done presenting she wanted to save it and MOVED (not copied) it to a key drive (big mistake to trust the move). When she got home the file was corrupted and she cannot open it.
Anyone know any possibilities to recover this?

A:Are there any tools available to recover a corrupted PowerPoint file?

The file may not have been fully written when she removed the thumb (key) drive, and if that is the case, there is nothing that will be able to fix the file that was not completely saved.
