"ipconfig" Suddenly Stops Showing Adapters

Q: "ipconfig" Suddenly Stops Showing Adapters

Hi all,

Tonite, I went to install a new PCI-E Firewire card into my desktop running Windows 7 Ultimate X64 and I had to install the most recent critical updates before shutting down.

Foolishly, I did not boot up after the updates, to verify my OS's integrity..I just installed the card and booted up. The card installed just fine, but now I have no network config. Odd, eh?

While troubleshooting, I changed slots and eventually removed the card. I also performed a system restore to a point prior to this evening. Still, I can not see my adapters from ipconfig. I can, however, see the adapters in the Control Panel, and I see they still have their configs.

I removed and reinstalled the adapters to no avail. I installed a wireless adapter, and even was able to see my router, and authenticate and establish a connection, but nothing in ipconfig.

It looks like my stack is hosed...any idea what I can do next? Can one reinstall "Networking" on a Windows 7 host? I hesitate booting off the emergency CD and doing anything drastic if there is a more simple solution I can consider.

Thanks all.

Preferred Solution: "ipconfig" Suddenly Stops Showing Adapters

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I recently reformatted my computer and reinstalled windows, however, after I had got it back running again I found that there were none of the usual Network Connections showing up. I checked the Device Manager and nothing was appearing on there either, however there were several "Other devices" that were appearing with unfriendly looking yellow question marks.

I think there are drivers for most of the things it was showing on a disk that came with the motherboard, but that has since disappeared. I have been on the ASRock website and I am downloading what I think is the same things that were on the CD.

Some information about the "Other Devices":
?! Coprocessor Location: PCI bus 0, device 1, function 3
? EPSONStylus D88 Location: on USB Printing Support (I have the drivers for this)
?! Other PCI Bridge Device Location: PCI bus 0, device 7, function 0
?! SM Bus Controller Location: PCI bus 0, device 1, function 1
?! Unknown device Location: on Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System

What I would like to do is to get all these "Other Devices" doing what they are meant to be doing and I would also like to get the LAN showing up on the PC, although I think these are part of the same problem.

I have updated my Computer Specs to the latest setup. The motherboard is an ASRock AliveNF6G-DVI and the downloads for it are here
I am downloading the top one, which other ones should I download? (Should I be downloading the top 1?)

Hello all,

I have been running Windows 8 since the beta release and up until this point haven't had use for adapter bridging or "internet connection sharing". I have a cellular modem hooked up via USB and am trying to bridge the USB modem adapter with my LAN port on my tower to output to a wireless router. When I attempt to do this, I see the message stating "please wait while windows bridges the networks." Then after about 10 minutes it completes but the bridge doesn't seem to be successful as it is displaying no internet connection. I removed the bridge an restarted my machine. After restarting the LAN adapter displays its status as "Enabled", however the cellular modem displays "Enabled, Bridged"(See Below).

I have done about an hours worth of googling looking for the answer with no success on how to remove the adapter from its bridge. When I select both adapters and try to recreate a bridge it displays "You must select two adapters not currently in use by ICA." (See Below)

Any help is appreciated, Thanks!

I have a Win32 API windows program that displays a txt file that contains a French document.  I can click on a word and the program will read a dictionary file, open an edit window and display the English definition,
type, and tense.  After several requests the program stops displaying the results. In fact, any mouse clicks appear to have no results (including clicking the tool bar and the scroll bar). A right mouse button click should cause a MessageBox to appear
but does not.
In tracing my program I see that the program is behaving as though it is working but no windows pop up nor does any displayed text appear.
I reuse the edit window and simply resize it and move it around, (rather than deleting it and recreating it for each definition), so I tried creating it when needed and deleting it when done, but no change.
I also create a global font on startup and apply it when needed so I tried it without the font but again no change.
When I compile with CodeBlocks the program stops displaying after about 45 requests. When I compile with DevCpp the problem occurs after about 20 requests. I?ve also monitored the GlobalMemoryStatus but there appears to
be lots of memory so I can?t put it down to a memory leak. It?s almost as if I?ve run out of some windows structure but I don?t know what?

I was trying to install the iCloud desktop client on my PC, but I got a Windows generated error (something like "An error occured during the installation of assembly microsoft.vc80.crt"); I decided that if I restarted my PC it might work. In the process of restarting, Windows updates were installed. After login, the internet connection was showing as Limited access only (something which has been happening a lot, but a restart of the router normally fixes it - I think my router is really rubbish when more than 8 or so devices are trying to connect. This time, a restart did nothing, and plugging an ethernet cable in also made no difference.

I have completed about 5 system restores to before the update and before other recent installs to see if I could fix it, but it seemed that the computer reinstalled the updates on restart, and it made no difference to the internet connection. I ran ipconfig /all to find almost no results. I have reset the winsock stuff that is recommended for problems similar to this on lots of forums and even tried a clean driver install (which actually made things worse - no networks were being found by the wireless at all, so I went to roll back to the previous driver, which was greyed out, so I restored again, now I get limited connectivity once more.

I should also mention that it still doesn't work in Safe Mode.

I have included a screenshot to show ipconfig /all results.

Hi, we have regularly been buying Dell AC adapters from Dell partners but have seen several different model AC adapters which look like genuine products but instead of the normal p/n on the label beginning with 0 (ZERO) , it starts O (LETTER). Is this a telltale sign that the product it a counterfeit?

Hi guys. I'm new here. I've tried to read all the discussion about how to fix the unallocated hard drive but I just can't understand it as the cases were pretty much different than I'm facing of.

Here's my problem.
Yesterday my external hard drive seems normal, everything is fine, until there's a blackout and I have to put "sleep" to my laptop. After the power got back, the hard drive suddenly gone and when I check the list of drives under "Disk Management", it showed up as "Disk 1 - Unallocated".

(I've attached screenshots here for your viewing)

My external hard drive is WD My Passport 1TB. It contains a lot of valuable data I cannot afford to lose. I really hope there's a way to fix this, and once I get back all of those precious data I will buy another HD to transfer them ASAP because I cant let this happen to me again.

Your help is so, very much appreciated.
Any questions regarding my problem, let me know. I'll provide all of the details you guys need.

1) I've tried TestDisk but on the "Analyse" process, it says "read error"
2) I've changed cable, but the situation remains the same.
3) I've tried Recuva, but it doesnt recognize my external drive.

A:WD EXTERNAL HARD DISK 1TB suddenly "unallocated" and "not initialized"

First don't mess up with the WD drive settings.. download partition wizard 7 (its free)..then .. open it ..click wizard(menu) .. select partition recovery wizard.. and it will find the partitions on it i think.. that way you can recover your partition that has been lost.

Running Windows 7 Enterprise, 32-bit, I keep getting random freezes which last about 20-30 seconds, then the system always recovers. Generally, the mouse still moves, streaming music in not interrupted, but I can't do anything during these micro-freezes. CTRL-ALT-DEL is non-responsive at first, then once the task manager comes up, everything returns to normal. No abnnormal CPU usage. I have updated all the latest drivers, and have tried rolling back various component drivers to test it. This is my 1st post here.

I've got a problem with my brand new USB wifi adapter. It's the TP-LINK TL-WN721N.
I've installed the latest drivers from the website.

The problem is, when I run "ipconfig", the Wireless device status is displayed as "Media Disconnected". I can scan other wireless networks around my area, and I've used "inSSIDer" as well and it works too.

Also there's no problem with the driver and device manager shows no errors either.

I've tried re-installing the driver multiple times, with the firewall(default Windows) enabled and disabled.

My OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit
Wireless chipset: Atheros AR9271 Wireless

Can you detect your wireless network? If so, exactly what happens when you try to connect? Since you are having trouble you have disabled encryption and MAC Address filtering on the router until you get it working, right?

ipconfig.exe should be found in c:\windows\system32 and have a version number of 5.1.2600.2180 for XP SP2. A copy should also exist in c:\windows\servicepackfiles\i386

Ipconfig must be run from a command window; eg: Start > run cmd

I decided to upgrade my PC from Win7 to Win10 before the free upgrade time expires. It has been a bit of a nightmare.

After the upgrade completed I have no Internet Access. I know the hardware is good because when I revert back to my image of Windows 7 I do have Internet Access.

When I type
ipconfig /all
I get only this. No ipconfig numbers at all.

Windows IPConfiguration

Host Name: MyComputerName
Primary Dns Suffix: blank
Node Type: Hybrid
IP Routing Enabled: No
WINS Proxy Enabled: No

The Ethernet card shows working properly

I uninstalled and reinstalled driver.

I ran
C:\> netshwinsock reset catalog
then I ran
C:\> netsh int ipreset reset.log
This gave me an error message
Access denied

My initial attempt to do the upgrade failed at about 44%. I googled this and removed my symbolic link that allowed me to move my user data to my D:. Google said there could be problems with that. After that the upgrade completed but I can't activate because I have no internet connection.

I suspect that deleting the symbolic link may have something to do with the problem but I don't know.

Any help would be appreciated.

So I've been banging my head all day trying to get my internet back working on my Compaq. It (the internet) cacked out on me this morning with my D-Link DWA-130 Wireless adapter. After uninstalling and reinstalling drivers, etc and then finally testing it on this (my working internet) laptop, and discovering that it was indeed the adapter that had died.

Deciding that a month out of an adapter is pretty poor, I've now got a Belkin FD8053 N Wireless adapter. Unfortunately it appears as though the ghost of the DWA has decided to stall my internet permanently.

I installed the Belkin ok, and the light blinks quickly for a few seconds then goes off for a few minutes. In the Belkin configuration utility itself, it seems to recognise the adapter is there (as does the remove hardware icon in the system tray) but there are no networks to be found. As well, in the system tray options, "Enable radio" will not work!

To back this up, there is no "wireless network" icon in the network connections folder, and no wireless icon in the system tray.

IPCONFIG recognises that the adapter is there, but displays "media disconnected". /Release and /renew is not working.

So after perusing the forums, I downloaded and copied over Xirrus Wi-Fi inspector. Lo and behold, Xirrus can find my network (and the ones around it) no problem! So what the heck is going on?

A friend of mine did who knows what to his computer using some data cleaning software, called secure clean. He set it to run and automatically shut down the PC when finished. Upon reboot, his taskbar was a different color, he was shown a message requesting that he log in with a user that has administrative privileges, his internet connection was gone (ipconfig showed on everything, and ipconfig /renew said "RPC server unavailable"....even though the Administrative Tools>Services applet shows it to be "started").

System Restore is not an option, as it was disabled a month ago in hopes of solving another unrelated problem....

So... I'm gonna bet 10 bucks it's time to format the hard drive and start from scratch, right?

A:Control Panel is completely empty & ipconfig /renew gives "RPC server unavailable"

I think you win the bet since SR is the only way I know that gives the system a shot at recovery from such an event unless the program that did the offending work creates a restore file of its own (most just use SR if they do though).

You could try a system repair but since it seems all sorts of settings are missing and accounts have been messed with as well, it might be more effective to nuke if there's a good backup.

A:WinXP not detecting firewall/antivir and can't use "ipconfig"

it could be a software conflict indeed. uninstall the last two softwares that you installed and see if the problem could be software related.

another thing you can do is to perform a system restore on your computer.

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

My 1 yr old Toshiba notebook connects slowly (sometimes at 9600), & has trouble staying connected to complete even a slower download. I have also had problems getting "locked up" and had to allow the thing to just run down the battery in order to get it unlocked and turned off (not good - I know). I was told to go to the Control Panel, dbl click the Network icon and re-load the TCP/IP protocol. But when I got to this point I found that my system had two TCP/IP protocols listed, as well as two adapters listed. Could my system be getting confused by too many settings on this tab? - you know not knowing which to use, therefore getting bogged down in some way? I am a little fearful of removing something I need. One of the pairs references like this.....TCP/IP->Intel(R) Pro/100+ Mini PCl looking as tho it matches up to an adapter with a similar Intel(R) PRO/100+mini PCl. The other pair that look to go together simply say.... TCP/IP-> dial-up adapter and Dial Up Adapter. Sorry if this is confusing. I'm just trying to list what is sitting on this tab. P.S. Are you using DSL or Cable? An external Modem for either dialup or broadband? The lockups are more than likely RAM generated (the lack of).

The Mini entry could be a external modem adapter, a Network Interface adapter or DSL or Cable modem adapter (usually external on the DSL, cable or other external modems) the other two (TCP/IP-> dial-up adapter and Dial Up Adapter) are standard and would have to be there for the external or internal modem, Ok? So those three entries will not slow you. A internal modem would

At the least:

Enter Dial-up Networking (DUN); Right-click delete your connection there (and all connections but 'Make a new connection'; Restart your computer; Enter DUN; click Make New Connection and follow the on-screen instructions. Or use the wizard to make a new connection in Start; Programs; Accessories; Comunications. You could safely remove all the procols and adapters in the Networking control Panel after deleting your DUN connections; restarting, then start from scratch.

In other words, re-do your connection after deleting the old one and restarting. I'd clean it all up in DUN and the Networking control panel but scan for virus trojan or variant befor creating a new connection. If you remove the Networking protocols and adapters they'll be re-created by Windows when you create a new connection.

Be sure and update your anti-virus before you delete your connection.

My IP and whatnot is showing up, but also tons of "Tunnel adapter Local Area Connection". There may not be a problem since I can connect to the internet relatively easy and there is a wireless icon in my system tray. If there is no problem, I'm still curious about it.

Here's a brief explanation of what those are:

ISATAP (Intra-Site Automatic Tunnel Addressing Protocol) is an IPv6 transition mechanism meant to transmit IPv6 packets between dual-stack nodes on top of an IPv4 network.

Unlike 6over4 (an older similar protocol using IPv4 multicast), ISATAP uses IPv4 as a virtual nonbroadcast multiple-access network (NBMA) data link layer, so that it does not require the underlying IPv4 network infrastructure to support multicast.

ok, I'll try to make this as concise as possible... HAD one Win7PC and two XP SP3 PCs connected (wired) to cheap walmart Belkin N router. Had a bad lightening storm and router shut off. when turned on wireless still could connect to router and the Win7 desktop could also, but there was no internet access and the two wired XP connections could no longer connect. Looked at modem and the modem was not recognizing a link to the router at all. plugged my laptop direct to modem and light shows link and I get internet. SO, I determined the router input port(comes in from modem) got fried during a surge from storm.
SO, bought a new Linksys Cisco E2500 wireless N router. wireless works good, the Win7 desktop once again connects fine and has internet. The two OLD XP computers still show "media disconnected" so I hooked them direct to modem and the LINK light on the modem does not light up. Am I probably correct to assume that the onboard ethernet got fried on the two PCS also? the one wired connection that survived the storm is a new computer(dell) with separate ethernet card whereas the two older XP's had onboard. Is there maybe some sort of surge protection built into new NICs that the old motherboards didn't have?
What is more strange is :

Since I have been home for holiday break, I've been having incessant connectivity issues on my relatively new gateway laptop. I see frequent, random disconnections with no real explanation. Most often I get the "problem with network adapters" error, but I have seen a few others that tell me there are no detected networks or that I simply "cannot connect to wireless network." I've read some threads on this forum that address similar issues, but I have yet to find a solution. Currently I can't even connect through ethernet and I am completely and utterly baffled; in truth it has been all I can do not to throw my router, laptop, and myself out of my second floor window.

I use a NETGEAR WGR614v7 router with Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit OS.

I'd like to get this resolved before I return for spring semester without internet connection, so please offer some insight as soon as possible. I just hope this isn't a result of some hardware failure. Thank you.

I believe that this model router has a few compatibility problems with vista, check that the firmware in your device is the latest available

I am running XP SP3 with .NET Framework 3.5 SP1. The wireless network adapter works fine using either the Atheros Client Utility (my preference) or Windows Zero Config, Since someone mentioned the latter as possibly being necessary, I have been using it for these tests. It is, thus, not surprising that the wireless network adapter is present in and shows no problem in the Device Manager (devmgmt.msc), or ipconfig output; however, Xirrus WiFi Inspector shows "No adapters available" and does not function. Can you help me get WiFi Inspector running?

A:Xirrus WiFi Inspector shows "No adapters available"

I just downloaded, installed and tested the Inspector on my XP machine and can tell you that WZC is definitely not needed, as I always have mine disabled and use the adapter's utility.

Unfortunately that's about all I can tell you. Haven't come across your problem before. The user manual says you need at least SP2, but you have SP3 so that's fine. There are 3 issues listed in the manual; doubt they apply but I'll quote them just in case.

Following are known issues with the 1.2 version of the Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector:
1. The Wi-Fi Inspector must be uninstalled before being updated or reinstalled.
2. The Enable/Disable function is not available on Windows XP. On Windows 7 and Vista
systems, you must be running the application with administrator privileges for this
function to to operate.
3. The Wi-Fi Inspector may not run properly on systems running virtualization software such
as VMware or VirtualPC.Click to expand...

I suggest to uninstall it and reinstall, mostly because I can't think of anything else and sometimes those dumb actions actually work.

For my curiosity, what model Atheros adapter is it?

Hi everyone, I just recently got a new laptop that is experiencing issues with its networking. I'm leaving for college in a few days and I would really like to resolve this without having to send it in for repairs for weeks.

1) I cannot get any adapters, ethernet or wireless, to appear in my network connections folder in the networking center, even when i am using the adapters to access the internet

download driver for my Killer N1535 card and when i attempt to install it says it cant find any killer hardware

I have several icons/files from my "User" folder showing up in the "Computer" folder (several in duplicate), PLUS numerous blank icons...

This seems to have occurred after the Common Files folder became corrupted, after I somewhat riskily decided to power off while Vista was attempting to come out of Sleep mode - it had already taken about 3 mins and I was in a hurry - bad move, I know. That delay appears to have been due to an old version of Online Armor, and has now been fixed (by an update). Chkdsk scanned and (apparently) corrected some errors, and I also ran SFC which said it had corrected some errors but had also found some that it couldn't correct. Any help much appreciated.

You might see if doing a system restore using a restore point dated before this happened may be able to fix it.

Hello! I've run into an unfortunate problem. I was port forwarding earlier to create a server for an online game when my internet suddenly crashed and stopped working completely. The internet router itself is fine, for my phone and other computers in the household can connect to it. But now my computer refuses to cooperate with the wireless internet. After 3 hours of frustration, I only succeeded in getting rid of the 169 IP that Windows was assigning to my computer.

Ethernet works. This computer is running on Windows 10. My internet is Verizon FiOS. ipconfig /all brings up this:

Okay, so I have now seen this issue 3 times. Customer can not get on internet out of the blue. Device manager shows the normal integrated network adapter driver but also 16 Wan piniport 6t04 adapters all with esclaimation points. In safe mode there are close to 100 Wan piniport 6t04 adapters in device manager with "!". You can uninstall all of them but one in safe mode.
I believe the one that cannot be uninstalled is called something different (sorry, forgot the name of it). Anyways does anybody in this world have a clue what might be the cause?

I resolved this issue by using system restore from safe mode but I would like to know the cause.

My last one was this:

Cx went away for 10 days and had computer unplugged from power, comes home, plugs it in and no internet connection. We go to device manager immediately and those adapters are there.
System restore did not make any checkpoints in the last 10 days.

My office just upgraded, and I can no longer use Windows XP. On this system, I was able to add a separate taskbar to facilitate quick access to commonly-browsed folder locations on our vast network, and another one expedited the launching of useful programs and lists. Each task on each taskbar was represented with a big custom icon to save eye strain. I had them installed in opposite vertical margins, and they were set on auto-hide to keep them out of the way when not being used. Just move your mouse pointer to the left or right margin, and BAM! Sorry for the cliche, but I really got used to the convenience of what I had set up, and I just don't think I can be as efficient without anything comparable.

Now there appears to be nothing comparable in the Windows 7 GUI, and it's making me sick with rage! I see only the option to put a "toolbar" on an existing "taskbar", and no option to create any additional taskbars! This cramps up your one-and-only taskbar, plus the tiny toolbar access buttons require way too much precision for anything that's supposed to be quick. When you've figured out how to bring up that ridiculous button, the list that it yields is small enough to cause painful eyestrain - nothing efficient, much less cool about this at all! I have seen customization options in other OS GUIs that may have resolved some of these issues, but I see none such in W7.

I have tried every google search string that I can think of, and found... Read more

When our website users click on an html attachment embedded on a web-page in IE9, the download manager will not display the "Open" option. It will only display "Save" and "Cancel" which our users don't like, having to save the

Is there any setting to tweak , which will display all the 3 options for HTML attachments as well?

A:IE9 download manager will not display "Open" option (only "Save" and "Cancel" is displayed) for downloading HTML documents.

As you know, the Open-Save-Cancel dialog box helps you prevent your computer from affecting by virus while downloading.
So I suggest you test to reset all zones to a lower level temporarily and then please attempt to download this html attachment again.

However, since you can normally download the other documents, I suspect there is some restriction in the website which you are trying to view. I recommend you to contact the administrator of that website if possible.
could you please send me the link of the website from where you are trying to download the html attachment?

Ok, so here's my problem. I bought a computer from someone on craigslist, an Acer Aspire R1600 with the NVIDIA ION chipset. I just got ethernet working thanks to help in another thread that the seller of the computer created.

I have been searching for other people's work on solving this issue and tried their solutions. These include but are not limited to

-making sure tcp/ip is enabled, along with DHCP and DNS (ip address config set to automatic)
-Installing various different driver versions for my WLAN adapter
-Completely uninstalling all WLAN drivers and removing the files, then letting Windows automatically install the drivers it finds, this solved someone's problem. No luck for me.
