I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi I am currently testing the BCU configuration tool to configure the BIOS. In the file I have these settings BIOSConfig 1.0;;TPM Specification Version 1.2TPM Device Hidden *AvailableTPM State Disable *EnableClear TPM *No On next bootTPM Activation Policy F1 to Boot Allow user to reject *No prompts The issue is that I get a error code 1 and 13 when I apply the settings with the TPM State not recognised as an example.Despite this the setting changes in the BIOS does any one know why. I am running in a Task Sequence. I know I can put overides for the error codes but would prefer not to see these errors at all.

Hi, We have a script using the HP BiOS Utility to change the vtx setting but we are currently experiencing problems. This script has been developped by a 3rd party and its been succesfully tested on multiple HP Models. In our environment, we are using the following HP workstations:HP Compaq 8100 Elite SFFHP Compaq 8200 Elite SFFHP Compaq Elite 8300 SFF By default, our BIOS doesn't have any password, the script will run the HP BIOS Utility with admin privilege, add a temporary password, enable the Vtx setting and remove the password. On the next reboot, we will run our software that needs vtx enable but the program will not see  that vtx is enable. If we enter the BIOS manually,  the Vtx setting will be enable, the only way that the software will recognize that vtx is enable is if we do another change to the BIOS and save that change.  It seems like Windows is not seeing the change that the BIOS utility did.  The intriging part is that on some machines, the script will work and the software will see the change. We have run the script numerous times, on multiple machines and on our different models but we can determine any patern and identify why it sometimes work. I was wondering if this is a known issue and if anyone already encoutered this. Thank you,

Hi all, I'm currently looking into getting bitlocker enabled on our company devices - I need to enable the TPM chips and ideally I want to do that without going through every system and changing it manually. I've looked at the config utility Lenovo offer and the E560 isn't in the supported list, and when running WMI scripts, no output is obtained. Does anyone know a way this might be possible as it's going to be very time consuming changing this manually for everyone! Thanks in advance.

I am unable to use the BCU to read or set the BIOS for a particular operating system image.  This is not hardware dependent, but is instead consistent under a particular software setup; if I reimage the computer with a different image, I am able to work with the BCU without issue. The image in question is not running antivirus, and is a reasonably "vanilla" Win7x86 build.  When I run: biosconfigutility /get I see the following: <BIOSCONFIG Version="3.2.3.1" Computername="ZT-ACC1004E8E63" Date="2014/11/18" T

Or, even stranger, the boot order seems to change but when the target computer is rebooted, the boot order reverts to what it was originally.  I threw a lot of rocks at this but none have hit anything yet.  Thanks for suggestions.

I am guessing that something quite wrong was done in 2.20 (and it persists into 2.21). There was no such errant behavior with 2.19, as I've confirmed by reinstalling 2.19.  Works perfectly and boots promptly and the BIOS Setup utility works lickity-split with 2.19, just like it always has.  But with the install of 2.20 the behavior changed drastically.

Looking at the README for BIOS 2.20 this definitely seems like the culprit:

[Problem fixes]- Fixed an issue where fan might rotated with max speed due to not reading CPU   temperature correctly.- Fixed an issue where system might not boot to OS when attached an external monitor   and its USB3 devices.- Fixed an issue where network boot might happened at reboot after resume from suspend   by Wake On LAN.

At first I thought I had blown the BIOS update, since my screen was simply black for what seemed like 1-2 minutes after displaying the Lenovo logo and "press ENTER to interrupt" message.  I pressed ENTER repeatedly but nothing happened, for a long time.  Eventually, the hard drive activity LED on the P70 started flashing, and seemingly almost 2 minutes later, the machine came to life and boot process continued normally.

Then, once I entered the BIOS, I used the right-arrow key to navigate through the tabs.  No problem until I got to the Security tab and then pressed right-arrow one more time to navigate into the Boot tab... and it hung!  Didn't go ri... Read more

Hi @zavorfang Welcome to the HP Support forum. Thank you for your post.   Personally, I do not recommend you update the BIOS unless you experience some issues with your existing BIOS and you are sure that the new BIOS will fix it. General recommendation I provide to users/customers is NOT to upgrade BIOS/UEFI unless they experience any kind of specific BIOS/UEFI issue. Updating just for updaing and just for using the latest verson is not solution. Any kind of update (no matter for what and who relesed it) can fix 2 issues but may introduce 10 more issues. Additionally, upgrading the BIOS (for any vendor) poses more risks because BIOS recovery is not that easy as compared to typical software updates IF something goes wrong. Same applies for Windows Updates, OS update, drivers updates, etc - upgrade/update IF you have issues which you know are fixed in the newer version or for some severe security issues. Otherwise, keep the existing version as long as possible.  With regards to the specific question and if you do insist on updating the BIOS and if you really need to do it, please follow these instructions in the official article >>> http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c00042629Follow the method "when Windows does not start" >> http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c00042629#AbT1 The particular file that you show a video of can be downloaded (product specific) from HP servers/web site >> http://sup... Hello:

This is my first post here, so hi to everyone.
I just got an ASUS X401a Notebook and I want to use a flash drive to boot from Linux.
I need to change the sequence in the BIOS so that the flash drive is first choice to boot from.
I have no problem accessing the BIOS utility, but it allows me to alter only some settings. Those in blue colored font I can change those in black font I cannot. What drive to boot from first is in black and not adjustable.
I used command line to work as admin and I also set up a password for admin in the BIOS to access the BIOS utility, but still no go; some things are allowed to be changed some aren't.

Any help is appreciated.

I need to recover the bios on my elitebook. I've tried using the win+B key combo as outlined here http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c02693833 but that doesn't seem to work (screen just stays dark, cpu fan is running). I now want to try the usb stick recovery method. So I downloaded the latest bios sp76205.exe and when I run it, I follow the instructions, but I never get the "HP System Bios Update Utility" to launch. After extraction of the files, nothing launches so I don't get any menu to choose to create a USB stick install. It is as-if the spXXXXX.exe is trying to install the bios locally to my workstation!... good thing it doesn't do that. How can I get a working HP System Update Utility or how can I launch the sp76205.exe is such a manner that I'll be presented with the menu to create a USB stick? Is there a commandline flag or something I need to launch it with?

Welcome to the Lenovo Community !

Sorry to hear of the difficulties you are experiencing.  The warning message you are receiving during the update is partially correct.  Your model should have been included in that warning since that BIOS update covers all the models listed.   Here is a full description from the BIOS update's README file....

Flash BIOS update - Flash from Operating System version for ideapad 510S-14IKB, 310S-14IKB, 310S-15IKB, Yoga 510-14IKB, Yoga 510-15IKB, Flex 4-1480, Flex 4-1580Version 2SCN25WW(V2.05)Applicable OS Win10

I foolishly enabled the options in the BIOS system configuration - Drive tab trying to make an external eSATA cable recognised my spare hard drive.
How the Dell E6230 will not boot and will not POST.
I am unable to access the BIOS to reset to default or to disable the SATA 4/5 toggles.
Is there any way to

1. Restore the default BIOS settings
or
2. Flash the BIOS from a USB or CD to get the computer to reboot.
I have discovered that the BIOS is doing something to the RAM modules
pressing FN+POWER cause the Battery LED to flash white. All other LED are BLANK
The RAM modules when placed in another E6230 then refuse to work until a memory test is carried out to wipe them!
This would go against everything I know about RAM modules not retaining information after powering off but this is what I found.
Thanks in advance.

I am trying to update the UEFI/BIOS on a Lenovo G50-45 type 80E3 from version 2.04 (file a2cn38ee) to v2.13 (file a2cn45ww.)  All goes as normal up to the re-boot.  After the Lenovo logo finally appears (see below) I get the error message "InsydeH2O - Secure Flash   Error : Invalid firmware image!!!  Please press any key to reset system......"  Pressing any key re-boots, and again after a longer than normal delay, the Lenovo logo re-appears and it boots back to Windows.  The BIOS is not updated. I have the right file - the same downloaded file works perfectly in other identical machines; I have a backup machine of the same model.  The checksum matches that posted on the downloads support page.  When run, the downloaded a2cn45ww file self-extracts to the file c:\BIOS\A2CN45WW\A2CN45WW.exe.  When that (an archive file) is run, it self-extracts to the folder c:\users\[username]\AppData\Local\Temp\7zS4B28.tmp.  In that folder is the ROM image (WIN213.bin, ~10MB) and whose checksum matches that of the same file on a machine which did update. Of significance:  Warm boots on this machine may take anywhere from 30 seconds to several minutes before the Lenovo logo screen appears.  In either a normal cold boot or one-key recovery the logo appears after a second or two.  Something is hanging in the POST, I don't know what.  If I wait long enough, it eventually does start. Why I want to update the B... This system config util is currently in Diagnostic or Selective start up mode, causing this message to be displayed and the utility to run every time windows starts, choose the normal start up mode on the general tab to start windows normally and undo the changes you made using the system config util.

When other users try to log on they get the following:

System Configuration Utility
An access denied error was created while attempting to change a service. You may need to log on using an Administrator account to make the selected changes.

In the System Configuration Utility "General Tab" it ask to select either the original Boot.INI or the Modified Boot.INI

How do I get all this back to normal without undoing the changes I made to get rid of the trojan?

Should be a tick box to not display the screen. Tick it.

Hi,
The below message keeps showing up every time I start my computer. I checked to make sure the utility is set to normal mode, which it is, however it keep showing up.
"You have used the system configuration utility to make changes to the way windows starts.

The system configuration utility is currently in diagnostic or selective startup mode, causing this message to be displayed and the utility to run every time windows starts.

Choose the normal startup mode on the general tab to start windows normally and undo the changed made using the system configuration utility.

(box to tick) Don't show this message or launch the system configuration utility when windows start."
I booted in safe mode and used hijackthis to delete the below line, however once I reboot in normal mode it does not show, however the next time I start my pc it comes back.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MSConfig] C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries\MSConfig.exe /autoO4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MSConfig] C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries\MSConfig.exe /auto
I have attached my hijackthis log below for you perusal.

I hope you can help me get rid of this annoying popup message.

Thanks.

From your start button select 'run' then type in MSCONFIG.

If you've made any changes to the startup, here's where it will be. If not it may be time to look at malware.

Hi all,
after cleaning my puter of a virus (or 2!!), I noticed when I ran the system configuration utility to see which items were running at start up, some files were still present, particularly;

AVSERVE2 and SKYNETAVE.

Does anyone know how to remove "dead wood" from the system config util. start up???

Many thanks

Geoff

You untick it under the startup section then apply and restart if that does not work dl HijackThis.exe and post you log under the HJT log forum page.

I disabled some of the items in my Start Menu with the help of answersthatwork.com as a guide. After I was all finished with that, I clicked Apply then Close or Exit? Rebooted, then went back to see if what I had unchecked stayed unchecked and it didn't. I've done this twice and every time I uncheck unwanted items, apply and reboot it seems to reset itself and check everything again ? Does anyone know why this is happening?
Also, the answersthatwork. seems like a good program but being the tight wad that I am I was wondering if their was any programs like this for free?

I am trying to remove Norton Antivirus 2005 from Windows XP, but can not remove it from the Control Panel Add/Remove Programs option. The instructions I received from Norton recommends that I begin at Start, Run, enter "msconfig" and then proceed through the Systems Configuration Utility window by making sure that "ccApp" is checked. My problem is that I can't get the SCU window to stay open when I enter msconfig into the Run box. It only appears for a brief second.

Anybody have any suggestions?

Thanks!

Hi clw and welcome to BC

The fact that msconfig won't stay open is a classic sympton of spyware. When that happens you can't usually access regedit.exe from Run or your Internet Options from the Tools menu in IE.

Suggest you post a log in the HiJack This forum on this site after folllowing the instructions about posting a HiJack log at the top of the forum.

I am running Windows XP Professional. When i get into the Startup menu within the System Configuration Utility i can see a number of Startup Items listed together with the Command and Location description for each Startup item. The location description is the same for each startup item - "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run." However there are 3 boxes ticked under the Startup Item heading with no startup item details (blank), no details under the Command heading (blank) but under the Location heading it shows - "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run."
Can anyone tell me why I would have details showing under the Location heading in three instances but nothing showing under the corresponding Startup Item and Command headings?

In my Startup list there are a ton of listings. Only a few are checked however. What I was wondering is, is there any way to get the others out of the list? Removing programs and deleting files do not take them out. I know it doesn't hurt anything to have them there, they just bug me and I want them gone. Thank you for any help.

When I boot up I get the following message after the desktop initializes:

""You have used the system configuration utility to make changes to the way windows starts.

Choose the normal start up mode on the general tab to start windows normally and undo the changes you made using the system configuration utility.""

I need to know how to get to the general tab to make the changes mentioned above. I have no idea where this utility or the general tab is. All help appreciated.

When that message appears, click the "don't show this message again" box.

Anytime you use MSCONFIG to UNselect startup apps, you get this (annoying) message.

Hello, In my "msconfig" box there is an entry under win.ini called
[MCI Extensions.BAK] Could someone tell me what this is for as I would like to delete it if no use. It has been disabled for as long as I can remember. Many thanks.

A:System Configuration Utility

MCI has to do with communications devices and I believe multi-media as well.

since is has the ".BAK" that would give the impression that it was backed up brolly due to some system changes.

Uncheck it, reboot the system and test your functionality. *IF* things still work, you should be able to safely remove it.
Good Luck!
