Support for older Avast versions will end

Q: Support for older Avast versions will end

At the end of this month, Avast will end support for our older consumer versions of Avast Antivirus. Those are: Avast Free Antivirus, Avast Pro Antivirus, Avast Internet Security, and Avast Premier.

A good antivirus program is a necessity to protect your Windows PC from malware attacks, to keep your computer running smoothly, and to protect your online identity and personal data. Over the past 3 years, Avast engineers have improved our database of known virus definitions, themechanism in which zero- day and widespread malware are detected, and the frequency of streaming updates sent to our customers. Avast 2015, with its unique Home Network Securityfeature which scans your home network for potential risks, is our best performing security product yet.

After May 31st, 2015, Avast will no longer provide security patches or technical support for versions 8.0.1497 and lower. Security updates patch vulnerabilities that could be exploited by malware, endangering your machine and the data on it. Please update to the latest version so you can receive regular security updates and benefit from the enhanced features and higher detection rates that protect your computer from malicious attacks. This update is also recommended because the latest version is compatible with Windows 10.

If you are running an older version of Avast, you can easily move to the latest version of Avast 2015.

How to check for the latest version and do a program update
If you need to update later, here?s a quick way to do it.
Right click on the orange Avast ball icon in the system tray.
Select Update from the menu and then click Program.
The update screen in the Avast user interface shows you the overall progress of the program update. When it?s done you will be asked to restart your computer. Click Yes to reboot immediately. Once the computer is restarted, information about the update may appear. If you are using a paid subscription, then your protection will be valid for the remaining period of your subscription.

Why to upgrade

Better detection rates
Easier technical support
We fixed bugs and problems that still might exist on your current version
Receive further program updates to ensure best protection
If you prefer an older version of Avast and require technical support, you will be asked to update first before we can assist you. There will be no patches issued and technical support will end on May 31st, 2015.

Preferred Solution: Support for older Avast versions will end

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

What is end of support?
Beginning January 12, 2016, only the most current version of Internet Explorer available for a supported operating system will receive technical supports and security updates. Internet Explorer 11 is the last version of Internet Explorer, and will continue to receive security updates, compatibility fixes, and technical support on Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10.
Internet Explorer 11 offers improved security, increased performance, better backward compatibility, and support for the web standards that power today’s websites and services. Microsoft encourages customers to upgrade and stay up-to-date on the latest browser for a faster, more secure browsing experience.

What does this mean?
It means you should take action. After January 12, 2016, Microsoft will no longer provide security updates or technical support for older versions of Internet Explorer. Security updates patch vulnerabilities that may be exploited by malware, helping to keep users and their data safer. Regular security updates help protect computers from malicious attacks, so upgrading and staying current is important.

A:Support for older versions of Internet Explorer ends

I found out about that earlier when I reinstalled Vista. Tried to update it past ie 9 but it will not install ie 10 or ie 11.  So I guess I will have to use a different browser until vista support also ends which will not be much longer itself.

Hi all, Recently, i purchase 2 second hand IBM Thinkpad laptops old models @ a very cheap price of $50. It doesn't come with AC adapter, some unscrewable, removable parts on the bottom were removed. I think it's worth the money so i bought it from the roadside vendor. Upon checking IBM/ Lenovo's website, i can't find it's missing components. The part numbers are : 9545-LZE  S/N 97-K4WG3 , 2635-6AA  S/N 97-DH9XN. The models are stated Made In Japan. That's the reason why i bought it. Anyone who's got these 2 models can reply to me. I will get some photos posted so you may look @ it.

Congratulations. Your ThinkPads are model 755CS (9545-LZE) and model 380ED (2635-6AA.) You can find more information about these models, including drivers, documentation, part numbers, etc. using this start page. You can also find a wealth of information by Googling on the model numbers.

Hi All. I have just upgraded my pc to windows 7 and when I installed my office 97 it all worked for a while and then I started getting a message that it was not a valid copy. I have the original case with the key code and it has worked fine from windows 98 through windows XP. So what is up?

I really do not need to go out and buy the latest version as I only use it for writing letters. Is this a ploy to get me to chuck some more money at Microsoft?

Has this happened to anyone else.?.

I have an XPS 15 9550 where the screen has started flickering on battery power at low screen dimming.
I opened a support ticket and the Dell associate suggested I roll back to A06 (its A13 right now) as its a known issue on this model. I cannot find A06 in the downloads center on dell.com (oldest they offer there is A10).
So my question is: where do we find/request older BIOS versions?

A:Where to find older BIOS versions for XPS 15

XPS 15 9550 BIOS A06
Trouble is, you may not be able to revert to this version. If you try to flash this version, you may get an error message that it's older than the installed version and it won't run.
There may be ways to force install an earlier version of BIOS, but they could be risky and could brick your motherboard.
Have you tried updating the Intel Graphics driver, and the driver for the nVIDIA Geforce GTX 960M video card (assuming you have that add-in video card)?

A:Can't Install Older Software Versions

Download the free application "Virtual Box" virtual machine software and setup a virtual machine then install windows xp. Once xp is installed into the VM you can load all your xp apps. If you want the best VM software and are willing to shell out some cash then go with VMWare's Workstation (much matter)

If neither of those two are the way you want to go then hop over to the Tutorial section here on the forums and read up on installing xp along with 7 doing a dual boot.

I have the 2002 Microsoft Office Professional version and put it on my newer laptop which had a trial version of Office 2003 (no discs given for backup). After the updates I did last week I could no longer open the .MDI files from 2003. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling via system restore selection of the date the program was removed. Then I ran into the missing file SKU112.CAB issue and could not initiate 2003 again. I gave up when nothing resolved that for me, uninstalled 2003 and still cannot open my .MDI files because Document Imager only does .TIFF now.
The solution posted here on changing the program within control panel, add/remove programs menu was for a 2007 version but I gave it a try anyway and of course it did not work for me.
I saved FAFSA, Taxes and other important items to be printed out via these .MDI file extensions by clicking print and being given the Document Imager as a "printer" selection. Can you please tell me how to force MDI to recognize a file extension .MDI ?

Thank You.

I have a number of articles that I wrote a few years ago, say 5 to 7 years ago, but now I cannot view them in Word 2002 on XP. The articles were written, I think, on a previous Word edition, but they might have been on Works, which I had around that time.
When I open the files now I get a file conversion prompt and an encoding error and a load of meaningless lettering.
Does anyone know if I can open this in Word 2002, or is there a previous version that I can get, or are these files now lost?

If you like it use it. At the max some remote execution can happen, that also you can block using firewall. Just block both incoming and outgoing connections and you are safe. You should not worry about VLC much since it's a well known and reputed software.

another comment that i saw made a few different time ...
"each version runs independently
you keep the old version when adding the new as some software programs require 1.1 to run and you cannot reinstall the earlier version without removing the later version first

I find this very annoying. If I want to put an image in the body of my text, people who have not upgraded to 7 or who cannot afford to upgrade only see a .dat file, no photo. I don't like it that users of older operating systems are being left out.

I am using Win 7 and I still get this at times. I think it's more to do with your ISP not including the right header tags than it is with the operating system.

It may also depend on what E-mail software is being used to read the mail.

Microsoft has announced that after January 12, 2016, it will be dropping all support for Internet Explorer, except for version 11.
That means if you are still using an older version of Internet Explorer, there will be no further security updates for it.
This will affect Windows XP/Vista users, but will not affect Windows 7 users(who have upgraded to IE11) or Windows 8/10 users.
Many users have already switched to Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome as their primary browser, so this will not be a problem for many of them.

Hi all!!! It's been a while since I have posted anything. I have a quick question. I have been using Avast for over 2 years and have been very happy with it. The problem is Avast is getting pretty old. (in my mind) I downloaded and installed Avira Antivir Free Personal in one of my Vm's today and was pretty satisfied with the UI and features. The one thing that bothered me was that there was no feature to password protect my settings like there was in Avast. (even the free version) This is one of the things that is deterring me away from using Avira, since I have four other family members who could easily screw around with some settings. Another thing is that according to the Avira features list on their website it doesn't have some features that Avast has. (and i am not talking about the p2p shield, email scanner, online email scanner) If any one who has used both of these security products can tell me which one was better for them I would really appreciate it. The main thing is password protecting the settings.

Have a great day

I have an older, quad-core HP Pavilion d4990y (desktop) that originally shipped with 32-bit Vista and 4 Gbytes RAM. Given the anticipated performance increase, his seems like an upgrade worth doing to me, but I'd like more experienced and better informed people to give my plan a once-over.

A:Does Older Hardware Not Support GPT?

You cannot install Windows OS on a GPT initialized drive unless your motherboard supports new UEFI Bios, and you are installing Windows 8.0 or 8.1. Which yours does not support. You can install a GPT initialized drive as a storage drive, just not as a bootable Windows drive.
A 2TB drive does not need to be Initialized GPT, it still can be MBR and Formatted NTFS. Anything larger the 2.2TB would need to be Initialized GPT.
According to your specs, you should be able to instal 8GB or RAM if you are running a Windows 64 bit OS

I update and save quite a few files each day, and I can see in File History that there are many saved versions for these files.
This would fill up my backup drive fairly quickly, and therefore, I need to reduce 'Keep saved versions' from the default of 'forever' to about 3 months.  But does this mean that all files older than 3 months will be deleted my File History backup?
What happens to all my files that have only ever been saved once, but are older than 3 months?  Are these retained in File History or deleted?

I had another (yet another) round of virus scares with my mom this evening, and I thought I'd pop in here to see if anyone has any suggestions or things that worked for them in helping older relatives deal with the scary world of computers.
My mom is the most technophobe person I can imagine.  She uses the computer for only a handful of things - posting on Facebook, playing Words with Friends with *her* mother on Facebook, organizing photo albums on Snapfish, and answering emails.  An occasional google search when she's feeling daring.   Despite years of doing these activities fairly regularly, she still has *no* concept of how file storage works (I tell her to go to her "C:" drive and get a blank stare, and the multiple layouts you might get when browsing for a file in different places within Windows is an unending headache for me.
So, I get a lot of "this random window popped up" calls and trying to talk her through figuring out if it's a serious malware threat vs. some stupid ad-designed-to-look-like-malware is always an exercise in frustration for me and her asking me over and over "Who can I call so I don't bother you?" and me having to reassure her that my frustration is at my own inability to help more easily and not at her for calling.
So, my question:  I'm not any huge tech expert myself, so my ability to help her with this sort of thing over the phone is always limited when I can't see the screen.  Looking for... Read more

A:Being tech support for older relatives

The one thing I'd definitely recommend, given what you've offered, is that you create an account on that computer for yourself with administrator privileges and then use it to remove administrator privileges from your Mom's account (and any others that might be on that machine where the user of said account falls into the same broad "tech illiterate" category as your Mom).
For yourself, if you have two computers handy, I'd start practicing with Windows Remote Assistance so that you not only see what it's like to remote in using it but also know how to walk your Mom through issuing you an invitation (make a set of step-by-step instructions you can read off to her so that you know you don't skip any steps) if it becomes necessary.  Of course, if a machine is actually frozen then it's frozen and the usual "fix" for that is the hard shutdown done by holding the power button in until the power is cut.
The fact of the matter is that most infections whether from viruses, adware, or malware of any sort do not "sneak on" to a computer but are directly invited in by user action (and very often involve having to install something - which a standard account cannot do - thus heading off a lot of issues).  It is clear that your Mom is doing the fairly typical panic clicking on buttons and links when things pop up (and is probably denying having done so afterward or just gets so flustered she actually doesn't remember exactly what she's done).

I have just had a pop up telling me Microsoft are ending support for older versions of windows - and I am sure I have an old one but I can't remember how to find out which.

How do I update to one that will be supported? Do I have to buy a disc or do it online?

Many thanks and kind regards..........Margaret

I have several Kingston flash drives which are older only says it supports
Windows XP and VIsta. Is it possible to make it so can use it on a Windows 7
computer ? At the moment when I try to use it on Windows 7 it doesn't recognize the drive AND doesn't show up on right bottom system tray.
Is there a way to convert the Kingston Flash drive so can be used for
Windows 7 as well ?
