I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

i got a new laptop a month or so ago, but since using it the screen is doing my head in. it keeps flicking from filling the whole screen to having a black bar about 1 or 2 inches wide on either side and everything on the screen then fills only that area, not even the cursor can go in the black sides.

my tabs on google crome also get smaller, for example, the twitter tab when the screen is big will say twitter/home with a little gap after and when it is small only twitter/ho will fit. it happens constantly no matter if i'm touching the laptop or not. the screen will go back then swap size. however, if i'm typing it will carry on during the balck screen that's on for like half a second, but the cursor will go back to being in the middle. sometimes it can be like 15 mins between size changes, but sometimes it like happens about 10 times within 30 seconds.

i checked the screen resolution but when i change that the font just gets bigger, and thats not the problem.i get a message each time it changes saying...

"optimal resolution notification. this is not the optimal screen resolution for the clone dispaly configuration. the optimal resolution is 800 x 600. click this notification for more information" but when i change it to this only the font size changes.

on facebook the bar saying who is online to chat goes when its on the small screen because theres no room. its so frustrating. its a new laptop for uni and its impossible to focus on work when the s... Read more

I have a W540, which currently uses a 170W power supply (20V 8.5A) I also just recieved a docking station for a P50 which has a 230W power supply showing 20V 11.5A. The connectors look the same, but I'm hesitant to try the 230W power supply in the W540. Should this be ok to use the 230W power supply with the W540?

Solved!

A:Power Supply Question - Can I use the 230W power supply with a W540?

230 watts is the maximum power supply, it only supplies the power needed by the computer. I sold my W540, so i can't test this for you. But i do the use the ThinkPad X1 Carbon with the 230 watts power adapter without any problem.

I have 2 failed Z800 power supplies (1150 watt version). After some internet research I am led to believe this is a common problem and related to the PS capacitors. Since I do not know how to do this capacitor replacement (yet). I thought I would buy a new PS. However, I do not want to buy a Z800 PS since it seems to me to be a defective design. Can anyone chime in and tell me if the new z840 1125 watt PS will work with my older z800? I have called HP support and spoken with the correct support people on this and they were not able to confirm if the Z840 PS will work (fit) on the z800. The closest confirmantion I recieved was that if it fits then it should work. Instructions to fix the capacitors:http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Business-PCs-Workstations-and-Point-of-Sale-Systems/Z800-power-on-issue... Same issue I am facing:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f563JGeoxaw On a side note, can anyone recommend a good service tech to make such capacitor repares in Southern California or insrtuctions on how to make this repair (with pictures). Thanks

I have a 4 year old Compac CQ61-410US Notebook. The flicking problem happens in Chrome and Internet Explorer and if I play the games that came with the computer. When I hit enter, space bar and other things it will stop for a while but then it is back. Interesting note it has not done it once since I have been on this site!
The noise is new  and it make me very nervous. No sound should be coming from this thing insides.  Well maybe a little but I do not want to hear it running this loud. Is my hard drive about to die?
On a personal note I am as old as dirt and every thing I buy I have to think will I live to use it. Should I just go and have everything downloaded to a new computer or is this pain something I can take of? I have had some other problems and have been able to fix it with help from this fabulous site
Thank You

A:Flicking on screen and noise in my laptop

First of all, welcome to BC. See, it's a great site, your problem has gone away already !

On a more serious note, what sort of noise is it ?  Sort of a fan whirring noise, or is there an element of click to it ?  There are three things I would do as a precaution / check.

First off, back up my data - work, photos, music, that sort of stuff. Depending on how much you have, you can use anything from a USB stick to an external USB hard drive. But back it up, just in case you do have a hard drive problem.

Secondly, run chkdsk /r on you hard drive. You do this by opening the Command prompt which you will find at 'Start / Programs / Accessories'. RIGHT click on 'Command prompt' and select 'Run as administrator' in the drop-down box that appears. This will produce a black window with white text. Just type 'chkdsk /r' (Note - there is a space between 'chkdsk' and '/r') and press enter. You will then get a message saying it cannot run, do you wish to run at next boot Y / N. Type 'Y' (= Yes) and press enter, then reboot your computer. Chkdsk will run when it starts up.

Dependiing on the size of your hard drive and the speed of your processor, this may well take upwards of an hour, don't turn your computer off until it has finished. It will then tell you if there are any faulty sectors on your hard drive.

Thirdly I would download, install and run a little program called 'Speccy', you can get it here :

Speccy
The noise may be nothing to do wi... Read more

Hi,This is kuiyoung. I had service few month. I forgot when it was. That time your technician came to office and changed motherboard. But when Im using it, suddenly it starts flicking and get error message that pc went to wrong. It's been two weeks. Strongly I think this one has problem and I don't wanna repair anymore. Because as you can see, I requested several times to repair this notebook. I'm really sick of it. I really don't think this one has virus. Thus I don't wanna install any program to wasting my time. I hope that you understand my situation. Thus I wanna refund or change new one. If you refund I would be more happier than change new one happy. Because after changing new one, same problem, I won't call you guys again. I will definitely buy other brand. It was my first time to buy Dell laptop. Really disappointed. I hope other people won't make same problem like me. I used to use other brand and never had problem.

Per Dell policy;* A refund is only possible if requested inside the FIRST 30 days from the original invoice date.* Any system exchange after the first 30 day will be a refurbished, not new.At this point, all we can do on this Forum is troubleshoot the flicker issue. If we diagnose that hardware is at fault, you would then contact Technical Support to arrange either parts replacement or refurbished system exchange.* Reinstall our Intel HD graphics driver* Restart the laptop when finished* Reinstall our Nvidia GTX 960M graphics driver* Restart the laptop when finished and retest

For a little while, I was periodically getting the blue screen of death... more frequently lately. When I checked the Event viewer in Vista it had an error each time it happened that said something about Power Management kernel error and Processor 0. Also I sometimes heard beeps before the blue screens would happen that sounded like it could be coming from the power supply, but it was hard to tell. Now the computer just freezes at the motherboard splash screen and will not boot (can't even get into BIOS). Could this be caused by a bad power supply?

A:PC freezes at motherboard splash screen, could it be power supply?

Not likely. It is more likely the hard drive is failing... or you have a problem elsewhere.

Usually the power supply will either work or quit all together.

Hey Sevenforums,

I just grabbed myself an awesome deal on a desktop for about 65 bucks. I booted up the computer and noticed that on boot, the screen starts to flicker and does some weird flashes. all my laptops never experience this but for computers, I don't know whether its normal or not. Not even my older desktop does this..

I uploaded a video using tinypic so please take your time to examine my computer's boot up (1:30) long.

ignore the "windows 7 is not genuine" because the person who sold it to me used a bootleg copy. I'm going to run LINUX and my own windows 7 ultimate OS.

I'm plugged into a DVI-D male to a DVI-I female (Desktop) to a HDMI (HDTV)

Almost certainly the problem is that the current rating is wrong, if the laptop needs
6.3 A of current, it won't function on less (just as you can't use a 3A fuse for a kettle!)
Unfortunately it must be the right current rating, I know, I've been caught that way too!
Maybe you can exchange it?

Ever since i got this new motherboard and CPU ive been having a bit of a nightmare with it.

Gigabyte ga-ma790fx-ds5 -Latest Bios
AMD Phenom Black Edition 9850,
4 gigs PC 6400 ram (Corsair XMS2 CM2X1024-6400
ATI Radeon 4870

The problem is that the motherboard will NOT power up at all with the 2 of the latest power supplies (600 watt+) i have.

It wont work at all with; (Nothing happens its just dead)
Arctic 600 watt Jeantech PSU (brand new and working)
Corsair 620 watt HX PSU (working)

It only seems to work with my Jeantech 450 Watt PSU and i cant for the life of me figure out why. Ive tried everything to get the board to work with the new PSU's. I had thought that the PSUs i got were dodgy but after testing out one in an older PC it worked fine.

Ive removed all parts and tried powering up and i cant get it to boot up. But the PC seems to work fine with the oldish 450 watt PSU which i find just unbelievable.

Can anyone help with this nightmare? Now on the Gigabyte site the CPU i have isnt listed as supported by this motherboard which is kinda worrying could this be the reason? If so how the old PSU boots up.

I just want to have the fracking thing working with the right PSU.

A:Power Supply Wont Power up - Gigabyte ga-ma790fx & AMD Phenom 9850

if I read the specifications right on your mobo... it implies that it has the 4 pin PCI-e input(power) but it also has the 8pin ATX power conector. (it may be simply removing a cap that is actually right next to the 4 pin connector, thus making it an 8 pin connector (thats how it was on my mobo)

Try using the 8pin power with your new PSU, see if that works.

Hi, so I have had a powering issue with my previous power supply which was the Corsair CX600W so i purchased a newer power supply - the EVGA SuperNova G2 550W. I unhooked my old psu, hooked up my new one and the PC turned on and I turned it back off from the power button on the case. I also hava a boot drive problem so I unplugged the sata cables from my SSD and wanted to try to turn on the PC with only my HDD. I did this with the PSU switched off and the power cord unplugged. When I tried turning the PC on again the PSU made a clicking noise and nothing turns on. The motherboard Led's are lit up so it is definitely getting power but when I go to turn the computer on it just makes a quick clicking noise and nothing turns on. Any help is appreciated, thanks!

A:Power Supply makes clicking noise when I press power button

You may just need to drain the power off from the power supply and try again. Unplug the power to the power supply, press and hold the power button for 30 seconds, then plug it back in and try to turn on the computer again. If that doesn't put the old power supply back in and see if the PC works, or was the old one dead? If the PC works with the old one and not the new one then you may have gotten a faulty power supply.

I'm interested in the Toshiba G25 laptop but have heard that you can't use it on airplane seat power. It comes with a 120W AC power supply (15Vx8A), but I've been told that most airlines limit seat power to 75-90W max. Lind sells a 12V car adaptor for the G25, but specifically won't include an airline plug for this reason (which I can get independently, of course). I've read some interesting electrical discussions on this board. Can ya'll comment on the following or provide any general advice about power consumption?

1) Given that the voltage of the laptop and airline seat power pretty much match up (12-15V), if the amp draw on the laptop exceeds what the airline power supply can deliver, what will happen? Will it damage the laptop to feed it insufficient current? Will it shut down the laptop altogether? Merely dim the screen?

2) If I remove the laptop battery, which requires power to charge it, how much will that reduce the power need of the laptop? I'm not sure how to work the math, but the spec sheet states the battery supplies 4400mAh at 8A output. Does it require the same to charge it?

3) Most importantly, on my 15 hour transpacific flights, will the DVD player work with that ultrabrite screen at the low airline power supply? A nice feature of the laptop is that you can watch DVDs without powering up the Windows operating system (it has a small linux OS for the DVD player). Granted, the DVD drive and screen are prob... Hi,
I picked up this Alienware 5700 off ebay to hopefully refurbish for my son but I'm new at this and still learning and so this thing has me baffled. The laptop is in pristine condition but shows no signs of life. When I plug in the power supply the green light on the power supply goes from solid green to blinking rapidly to the point you can barely see it. To me that would mean a short somewhere right ? If so where ? Has anyone else ever had experience with something like this ? I just don't want to go buying a new battery for a laptop that maybe fried already. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:No power, no lights but green light on power supply blinks rapidly

Remove the laptops battery and try the AC power only. If the green light does the same, it still could only be a bad AC adapter, or at worst, a shorted laptop motherboard

Hi, I just bought an HP pavilion e9300 a few week ago. And I am going to upgrade the power supply so that I can get a new graphic card--ATI 4870 which requires at least 500 watt power supply. My current computer is shipped with a 350 watt power supply. I will probably get a 650 watt considering the 70% effeciency of power supply.
However, when I talked to an HP technician, he insisted that I could go for a power supply with no more 450 watt. Because the system I just got has a motherboard which has a max power limit 450 watt. He said if I go beyond that, the motherboard will burn out.
So what shall I do? I really want to get ATI 4870 work well on my computer.
Thx very much.

A:Does power supply with higher power rating really burn motherboard?

The long answer is "No".
Just be sure of the dimensions of the power supply before you order a replacement, as HP uses some pretty strange sizes sometimes, and you want the new one to fit with room to spare.

It's been a while since I built a system from scratch and have a... errr... simple question

gfx: Sapphire HD3850 512MB Ultimate (passive)
http://www.sapphiretech.com/us/products/products_overview.php?gpid=225&grp=3

MB: MSI P35 Neo2 FIR
http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=proddesc&prod_no=1261&maincat_no=1

PSU: Seasonic M12II 500W
http://www.seasonic.com/product/pc_retail.jsp

The motherboard has a power connector for the graphic card next to the slot.

Is there any reason I should connect the power for the card to the power connector on the board instead of directly to the power supply?

A:Graphic card power to power supply or connector on motherboard?

First time I have ever seen that feature. I like it. I'm thinking that is a neat/easy way to partially eliminate cable clutter from the PSU. Give it a shot, you can always revert to PSU cable if you wish.

I've recently inherited a lovely Y70-70 touch from my father, and have restored it to factory settings recently. However I'm having issues at the moment where it shuts down instantly at random times when not plugged in. Checking the system logs in the event viewer I see the following Critical message: The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly. Generally online help seems to suggest this is a power supply issue. Have I got a duff battery in here? Are there further diagnostics I can run? Unfortunately I'm out of warranty so keen to solve this myself!

Hello guys.  Can anyone help me understand the power supply on the HP Envy Phoenix 860-019?  The PCIE connector 6 pin connected to the GTX 960 has black and white wires.  Shouldn't there be yellow and black wires?  Yellow is usually 12 volt and black wires ground.  Is the 6 pin connected to my GTX 960  supplying a standard 75 watts of power or something else?  I want to install a GTX 1070 but the 6 pin wire colors are not the industry standard color scheme.  Also there is a 2 pin power connector with a white and black wire.  Usually a 6 pin and a 2 pin can be used together to connect into a 8 pin socket on a GTX 1070.  Will my connectors supply the needed power and connect properly because the color scheme on the wires make no sense. Thank you

I have a Sony VGC-RB42G computer. I recently moved my computer, cleaned off all the dust, and when I plugged everything back in, it won't power up. The light on the power supply blinks green, inside the motherboard also has a green light that blinks as well. It has a ticking sound too, but I am not sure if it is coming from the power supply or the motherboard. Any idea what could be wrong.

FYI, I have already unplugged everything from the power supply, pulled out the ram, checked the battery, and put everything back together and still no change. One thing I thought was strange was after I unplugged everything, I pulled the power into the power supply again and this time the green light came on but did not blink. It stayed solid.

Sounds like a Power Supply problem.

I have just bought a Dell 19.5 V 90 W power supply adapter for a Dell from ebay. The PSU turned up this morning without a power cord. That's annoying enough but when I looked the connector needed is a type I have never seen before. The centre pin is slightly longer and wider than the other two so I assume that is the Earth pin. The centre pin is also offset between the other two. Again I suppose for connecting only 1 way. The two outer pins have a distance of just under 2 cms between them. Please can anyone tell me what type of connector this is. If I can get some info on it then I may be able to get one.

Thank you Terence

Sorry I don't know the proper terms, but basically the pin inside the jack where the power cord gets plugged into on my laptop was bent so that it's really hard for me to plug in my power cord and have it stay in place. My warranty with best buy has expired, so I need to figure out how to solve this problem on my own. I can't just leave it like this because the cord comes out really easily and I can't continue to work with such a tenuous setup. Anyway, is this just a matter of replacing the entire unit inside my laptop? I know you probably need more information, but I'm not sure what to provide, so please ask any questions. The laptop is a Toshia M-45, about 3-4 years old. Thanks in advance

umm.. bend it back so it's closer to normal? That's all I can say about it. usually works for me.

Hi forum and pc gurus,

My problem is specified down to my PSU, at least I think so. (550W Logisys PSU - maybe the quality has something to do with it, I paid $19 for it from NEW EGG). I have A Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 Motherboard, a Intel Core 2 DUO Conroe 2.13GHz processor with heatsink and Fan, Sapphire ATI X1950 Pro, 2 GIGS of WINTEC DDR2 PC 6400 (800) RAM, 1 SATA Maxtor 320 GIG HD, 1 2.5 inch SATA 160Gig HD, and two DVD Burner Optical Drives (both IDE).

I have it hooked up like this, two Optical Drives connected to 1 IDE connector/cable which is hooked into the IDE input on the motherboard, both are set to slave. Two CD outs (connected one to each Optical Drives) to one CD input on the motherboard. Both HD's are connected to SATA inputs on the motherboard, one is set for master, one is set for slave (I heard that it did not matter but wanted to state that anyway), then my ATI RADEON X1950 is hooked directly into my only PCI Xpress 16 slot. The power connectors are then all hooked into their respective inputs on the drives and Video Card. ANd last but not least, all the Power button and LED connectors are hooked into their input on the motherboard, wich I set up exactly as the motherboard diagrams and directions directed. I turned the switch on the PSU to on and I only got a faint mouse like squeek, then nothing, not even the fan. So I figured it was DOA, so I had newegg send me another. I got it today, installed it, hooked all the power connectors to the hardware, th... Read more

Yea...so we finally got my girlfriends new PC up and running. The problem im having...or more of a concern really. Is when you flip off the power supply, and then flip it back on, the PC gets a short burst of power. IE the lights and fans all come on for a second or two. Then you can press the power button and turn it back on.

Any ideas guys?

Hello to the HP community. I must warn you all, this is a long thread and is potentially confusing, so only read this if you're interested in giving feedback. I am here today to not ask a question, but to share with you my confusion on your Pavilion desktop PCs. I've looked at the technical specifications for many of the Pavilion desktops, including my own, and I simply can't understand one thing; where do you get your PSU power ratings from? I currently have a Pavilion 500-319na: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c04343438.It's a good computer, powerful in most areas although the GPU isn't, so I'm looking to upgrade it. The first thing I check before I upgrade parts, and hopefully others do too, is the PSU's power rating. And this is where my problem lies. Firstly, your website states that for my PC, and others, it's an external power adapter. It simply isn't, as it's inside of the PC. I've seen in many discussions that this has confused people, including myself. And secondly, your website states that for many of the Pavilion PCs, including mine, the PSU is rated at 180W. Let me tell you why I believe is wrong: The PSU that comes with my PC, and presumably other Pavilions too, has four power outputs: 3.3V (12A) and 5.08V (10A) outputs, 'limited' at 70W. Then there are 12Va (7A) and 12Vb (10A) outputs. These apparently produce 180W. First of all, the 3.3V and 5.08V outputs can't be limited to 70W, in theory. This is because, using the equation... As you did not mention any message or display on the screen, I would use this tutorial for a step by step diagnostic.  It also helps to remove the side panel, and visually watch the CPU and rear case fan movement(s).  As you press the power button, pay attention to the fans. Also does the Power Supply LED stay ON? Or did it go OUT when you pressed the power button?
