Yet again, files are write-protected ...

Q: Yet again, files are write-protected ...

Okay to fold this into an existing thread I couldn't find.

I need a fix for the write protection problem with Win7. My files are all "Read Only" so I have keep saving them under new names to keep my work. Nothing I found in Google gave me any help.

Preferred Solution: Yet again, files are write-protected ...

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Yet again, files are write-protected ...

What "write protection problem with Win 7" are you referring to, please?  A link describing such would be useful.

Are these MS Office files of which you speak?

Hi, and welcome to tsg

HIJACK THIS:
Try not to reboot
Currently the Spyware identified by the security experts and especially the morphing and breeding .exe`s in the new variants of CWS, after every re-boot required by Ad-Aware and Spybot etc, just spawns more and more files for the poster to find and delete. This is making the advice the security experts give just too hard to follow.
One of the security experts recently had one log with over a hundred files, they guy had to format c: drive.

Download and copy hijackthis to its own folder , it makes backups so keeping them separate and available can be useful.

Note the Spyware tools websites are very often under attack and so I have provided more than 1 location to download from:

http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/
http://209.133.47.200/~merijn/downloads.html
http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/
http://www.sherrylynn.us/privacypolicy (this has an older version 1.97 - if you can get to other sites)

Close all open windows and open Hijack This. Click “Scan”. When the scan is finished (it only takes a second), the scan button will change to “Save Log”.
Click on “Save Log” and then save it to NotePad.
Click on “Edit” – “Select all” – “copy” and then “paste” into the thread.

I have a question as I have purchased The Tornado(tm) and transferred all the files from my old windows xp laptop to my new vista 32 bit laptop such as homework, excel files, music, photos, etc. If I try to edit anything it says its write protected and cannot be saved. Is there anyway to un-write-protect all the files that i have transferred? I have googled this question but to no avail. I would really appreciate the help if anyone can shed some light on this for me. Thanks!

Have you tried either

1. Right clicking on the files and unchecking the 'read only' box
2. Saving the file under a different name

Hello all,

I have a hard disk that I took out of a computer that failed (MB). The disk has all my addresses on it in an address book for Printmaster. Unfortunately I never backed it up. I put this drive into another computer as a slave and was hoping to get the information off of it. Every time I try to move the file or copy it or open it with the program, it either tells me that the file is in use by another person or that the file is write protected. I have tried to change permissions and properties as the administrator and the folder the file is in keeps geting back the read only attribute. So I cannot import to the program. Both the old drive and the new drive have xp professional on them. Any help or suggestions are welcome and appreciated. Reentering all that information would be very time consuming and I would lose some addresses. Thank YOU

Ken

You could try booting up with a Linux Live CD.

Linux Mint 7 works well for me
and displays everything on my computer and all drives connected.

Just a thought.

(No interference from Windows, which generally seems to prevent copying, etc.)

Hi,

I'm trying to use Tag&Rename 3.53 to organize my MP3s on Windows 7, but I am unable to edit some of them because I get the following error:

"Disc is write protected or file is busy by another application."

The only difference I can find between the files that I can edit and those I can't is that if I right click and go to Properties => Security, the second entry under "Group or user names" is "Account Unknown" whereas with files I can edit the entry is "Joe (Joe-PC\Joe)".

Please can someone suggest what I can do to make all my MP3s editable?

Thanks,

A:Problem With Write Protected Files

Sounds like you need to take ownership of your files (sounds silly, I know). If you already own the files, you'd think you wouldn't have to take ownership of them! But, sometimes that is the case.Try this. You can do it manually by going through the Properties > Securities > Advanced > Owner > Edit > but that registry hack I found will probably do it faster.Try selecting all your MP3's then do the "right-click take ownership" on all of them at once (to save some clicking). I cannot guarantee it will work, as I have not tried this myself. If this does not solve your problem, you might have to manually add yourself to the list of Permissions that you saw for each file (let's hope not!).Let me know if it works.

I open Publisher files (that I have created on my computer) and when I go to close the file, I get a message stating: 'The disk you are trying to save to is write-protected. Make the disk read/write or use a different disk.' Then it wants to save the file under a different (temp) name. Tells me to close Publisher and reopen and rename. I can't rename. I've tried opening various Publisher files and it's happening to all of them. I click on properties and it doesn't have a check mark by read only or hidden. I'm operating on Windows XP using Publisher 2003.

A:Solved: Problem With Write Protected Files

Sounds like these files were moved from a different computer and for some reason aren't picking up the default permissions.

Easiest to Set permissions on the folder they are in, and force the permissions on all the file/folders in that folder.

Right click the folder that contains the files
Click Properties
Click the Security tab
Click the Advanced button
Click the Permissions tab if not already on that tab.
Click the Change Permissions button
If your account is not listed, click the Add... button
Type joe, then click Check Names - this should change it to Joe-PC\Joe
Click OK
Check the Full Control box in the Allow column
Make sure the Apply to: drop down shows This folder, subfolders and files
Click OK
Check both of these boxes:
Include inheritable permissions from this object's parent
Replace all child object permissions with inheritable permission from this object
If the Unknown Account appears in the list, highlight it and click Remove
Click OK
Click Yes
Click OK
Click OK

New dv6-7000 laptop (Win7 64-bit) has a problem I can't seem to solve:  When using any SDHC memory card you cannot write or erase files to the card.  You can read the files just fine, but you get a "Write Protected" error when trying to write or erase.   The card is, of course, not write protected, and can be written to in several other laptop/desktop SD drives that I've tried.   And I've tried different brands/sizes of SDHC cards.  Smaller capacity regular SD cards work just fine.   I tried removing this device and rebooting to reinstall the hardware, but no help. The Realtek SD Driver shows as version 6.1.7600.16385 in Device Manager properties, dated 6/20/06.  HP's support site shows a newer driver version 6.1.7601.29005 dated 2/24/12.  When I download and run sp56166.exe to update the driver, it seems to go through the update process successfully. But the driver still shows as the older version in Device Manager.  And, of course, the problem still exists.  Any ideas would be much appreciated!  Hard to believe that a new dv6 laptop can't properly write or erase files from High Capacity SDHC memory cards.   Thank you!

A:dv6-7000 can't write to SDHC cards ("write protected" error)

I understand high capacity SD cards return the message they are write protected in your system.

I take it the write protect switch is in the off/disable position on the card since they work in other systems.

What is the product number?

NOTE: Do NOT provide the serial number.

What brand and model is the SDHC card?

My McAfee virusscan detected the [email protected] virus. I'm unable to do anything with it (delete, clean, quarantine). I get disk is write-protected error. I try to browse to the directory it's in and I can't see it. I've changed folder settings to show hidden and system files. I'm running XP and still can't see the folder it shows up in. I've run viruscan in normal and safe mode. Still can't do anything with it. I've included my Hijackthis log.

A:[email protected] and disk is write-protected error

You are using an old version of Hijack This. You are also running HJT from your Temporary Internet Files folder. It will not function properly from there and it cannot create and restore backups from there. You need to create a new folder in My Documents and name it Hijack This. Now Click here to download Hijack This again. Download it and click "Save". Save it to the Hijack This folder you just created. That way it can create and restore backups if needed. HJT will store the backups in the same location that it is run from.

Click on Hijackthis.exe to launch the program. Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log. Click "Save" to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.

Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" then Paste the log back here in a reply.

DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Hello rscadden!

This is unpleasant. I hope the following would help you.

1. Type cmd in the Start Menu
2. Select Run as Administrator
3. You should now see the Command Line Utility
4. Type in DISKPART and hit Enter ( here the values associated with your USB drive could be changed)
5. Type LIST DISK and hit Enter
6. Type SELECT DISK and the number of your drive which is write protected and hit Enter
7. Type in ATTRIBUTES DISK and Diskpart gives the information you need about your drive
If the first line is written as Current Read-only State: Yes, then the drive is write protected.
8. To remove the write protection with Diskpart, type the command ATTRIBUTES DISK CLEAR READONLY. If it works, it should be confirmed by the line Disk attributes cleared successfully.

Good luck!

Hi, I have a problem with a brand new USB stick, PNY 64GB I bought on e-bay about two months ago. It started working properly, I transferred on it about 20GB of my photos. I did not notice anything weird. The pictures were there and I think I could even move them on and off, like copying and deleting. After few days, when I wanted to erase them, there was a message that the device is write protected. USB? There is nothing to switch it for write protection like on SD cards, for example.
From that moment, the device once was recognized as inserted in the PC, other times it was not. I could not delete the images, I could not format the device and even the KillDisc software, after running nearly 5 days without a break could not sort this out. There was an error message at 99% of process and I could do nothing else than to skip it, which resulted in the problem persisting on the USB.
Now I cannot even view the files, despite after this treatment I could have seen them few days ago. The files, after I clicked on them, showed mostly unaffected photos in the views, but when I wanted to see any particular photo, all of them appeared to be damaged - there was a grey area on the majority of the photo, just a thin area of the original picture could be seen on the top of the picture.

I have contacted the seller with this problem and they offered me the refund or replace, even assured me that the item will go to the manufacturer.

What is the exact message you are getting. It may refer to the images you are trying to burn to disk. In which case right click on the image file and select properties and see what is checked there.

Also if you are using rw cds you may need to format them first. Your authoring software should have an option to do this.

i cant format the flashdrive of my friend because it will prompt "disk is write-protected". There is no switch in it and i think it is a virus, because it was loaded with a bunch of shortcuts and error file names. I tried using Malwarebytes and Avast but still after reboot it is still there and write protected. I tried removing it manually using a CMD and showing hidden files but i cant even hit the delete button key on my keyboard. There is no delete option either when i right-clicked my mouse. I also tried in registry the StorageDevicePolicies but it is already set to "0".

Anyone suggestions?

You could try using Diskpart: Disk - Clean and Clean All with Diskpart Command

G'day jozzyjay, and Welcome to BC !!

How to remove a write protection from your USB memory Stick
1. Shutdown your computer or laptop
2. Insert USB Memory Stick into your laptop or Computer
3. Turn on laptop and then immediately start pressing (F8) key then Advanced Boot Options screen will come up
4. Select Safe Mode with Command Prompt
5. After loading files if your USB Memory Stick drive letter is (G) for example then write as
6. C:\windows\system32>G: and press enter
7. G:\>format G: and press enter
8. If ask you (Y/N) then press (Y) and press enter
9. Now a full format will start which remove write protection from USB Memory Stick.
Note:
Before removing USB from your computer, Always remove it safely by going into to my computer then right click on USB and click eject.

The first thing I can think of in such a scenario is that you have some type of
malware infection that can be causing denied write access.

Have you scanned that drive with a good (currently updated) anti-virus program?

Hey,

After EVERY boot since installing Windown 7 64 (previously on Vista 64 with no issues), slave hard drive goes in to read only mode..
After EVERY boot, I have to use diskpart to clear readonly status.

While diskpart sorts the isse on a temp basis, its a real pita to have to do it on every boot. Any ideas on the cause of this issue so it can be resolved once and for all??

Thanks.

A:Slave HDD Write Protected

Copy everything you need off of the drive to another one. Format the drive to NTFS using "quick." Replace files and folders on the drive.

That's the quick and dirty way to proceed on this one.

Before you format and after you copy stuff off of it though, open an elevated command prompt. Type takeown /f D: and hit enter. Change D to the drive letter of the HDD. See if this fixes first.

I'm trying to save my textures I collected over the years from a 3d program to a CD-R disk I haven't used in a while.Theirs plenty of space left and it says: Make sure the disk is not full or write protected and that the file is not currently in use.Im on windows XP. Thanks

A:Write protected disk

to a CD-R disk

What is the CD burning software you are using? CD-R discs are Write once media by default. Unless the first time you burned it you chose to make a multi-session disc in the burning software program. CD-RW discs can be written to more then once as long as you do not Finalize the CD.
Instead of using a CD-R you should use a USB Flash drive, or better yet a USB HDD.

I am operating on WindowsXP and one of my spyware programs has write protected my System 32 files. Now I can't uninstall any of the spywares to un write protect my system nor can I unclick the write protection button without it resetting to protected.

Does anyone know how I can fix the write protection. I can't install any program with dll's to the system 32 files until I can get this fixed...and I really dont want to have to scrub the whole drive and restart!

Thanks for any and all suggestions.

That way we could take a look look at any possible unfreindlies that may be causing this.

I am trying to format an SD card, but it is saying that it's write protected. I attempted to do this with multiple SD cards, and I had the same problem. I looked all over the internet on how to delete write protection. I tried the switch on the card, checking properties, commands, regedit, and computer management. Nothing is working. My computer is also recognizing and not recognizing the sd card off and on the whole time its plugged in.

External 2.5" Seagate Momentus 320Gb HDD.

Recieved from my father-in-law, he says it doesn't work. So I take it and there is no power at all. I take it apart and replace the USB connector and I receive power. However, trying to initialize the disk in computer management windows 7 says "the media is write protected". Computer management labels it as a "CD-ROM", now I don't know if this might be an issue, or it just does that until the disk is initialized. I tried diskpart and modifying 'writeprotect' in the registry but neither worked.

I also loaded up Win XP x64 to try it there, but I received pretty much the same results.

Thanks

Caspersim

A:The media is write-protected

Under Windows 7, launch the registry editor (press Windows Logo + R, type regedit, then press Enter). Navigate then to this registry path:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > System > CurrentControlSet > Control > StorageDevicePoliciesRight click on writeprotect and select modify. Set the value data to 0, then click OK. Do the same with ControlSet001 and ControlSet002. Close the registry editor and restart your system. Try then to access your external storage device.
