speed of your network connection to the modem/router

Q: speed of your network connection to the modem/router

Speed

We recently had Verizon HiSpeed (speeds up to 768 Kbps) installed with Westell(Model 327W) modem/router connected to our desktop.
When we place cursor over the "Network" connection in lower right of screen (of desktoop) it states:
The Internet (2)
Spreed 10.0 Mbps
Sent 141,926 bytes
Received 921,712 bytes

However, in the laptop, when we place the cursor over the "Network" connection, we see:
Speed 36Mbps
Signal Strength Excellent
Status Connected.

What we would like to know is why does our desktop show SPEED of "10.0 Mbps"

while the laptop shows:
SPEED of "36.0 Mbps?"
(Connection speed on both shows: download 705 kbps; upload 133 kbps.)

Is this something to be very worried/concerned about? We are senior citizens and the speed when we connect to Internet appears to be fine as far as we are concerned.
Thanks

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A:Belkin ADSL Modem with Wireless-G Router WHAT IS ITS MAX INTERNET CONNECTION SPEED

There THe belkin modem/gateway shouldnt limit your speed capabilities. You should be able to find the speed listed inside the modem's status page. To do this..
Click start>run>In run type CMD
In the black window type IPCONFIG and then enter. Note down your default gateway.
Open a browser window and enter the gateway's address into it. Click go
This should take you to your gateways graphical user interface.
Look for a status tab or see if it lists connection speeds on the general page.

Also you can test speeds at different sites. Google search broadband speed test and choose 1 of the millions of sites

I've got 15 Mbps internet service from the cable company. When just one computer is connected to the modem without the router, the speeds average about 8-9 Mbps. However, when we attach the router to share the internet, speeds drop off significantly, like down to about 1-1.5 Mbps average and max at about 2-3 Mbps (around 3000 KB/s) and that's when one computer is downloading and the other computer is idle. The router says its capable of 54 Mbps and both computers have 10/100 ethernet adapters. Also, I'm using another router as a repeater since we don't have a long enough cable from where the one router hooked into the modem is.

I don't understand how the router is restricting the speeds since me and my roommate share large files (4-5 gigs sometimes) and we can transfer files of that size in like 4-5 minutes.

I'm trying to diagnose some internet speed connectivity problems of late.
Running:
WinXP Pro
IE7
Linksys wi-fi router
Cablevision (optonline) ISP
This PC is hardwired into the router.

Had some storms here over the weekend and thought that the servers were having problems. the internet connection is very very slow and many times just gives me the can't connect page. Outlook email send/receives usually returns with errors of not being able to connect to the servers.

I initially though I caught a bug or something, but NAV and Spysweeper found nothing.
I've reset the cable modem and router.

When the cable modem and the router rebooted, but the PC was still off, I noticed that the lights on the router for wlan was blinking as well as the internet. I don't think this should be blinking unless there is a computer that is receiving a signal from the router??..??
(My wife's laptop uses teh wireless and it was off). I also have ssid disabled and a firewall enabled on therouter.

I disconnected the network cable from the PC to the router and plugged my cable directly into the cable modem. Wouldn't you know it, IE7 seems to work like a charm.

I've run a speed test with the cable directly into the modem and I'm getting 14.9mbps down ot of 15mbps and 1.7mbps up out of 2mbps.

Before I rebooted and connected to the linksys router, I couldn't even get the test page to show.

Anyone have any idea what could be the "problem" if there ... Read more

So basically how the title is.

My internet would drop out/freeze. Router doesn't indicate any change in service. I plug my laptop into the modem, and have prime speeds.

Restart the router. Works for awhile.
Reinstalled the firmware manually on the router.
Set the Channel off of "Auto" and put on various options of 9, 10, 11 to avoid clashes with other networks.

Freezes. Now the router indicates there's no connection. Drag the cord out of modem and test. Prime speeds.

Okay, screw this - I went and bought a new router yesterday because, sure, that Belkin one was 2-3 years old. Set it up with same channel settings, etc.
Same.
Freaking.
Thing.

I have a laptop that runs a VPN (for work) that uses it, plus multiple iphones (3) and ipads (2) an AppleTV and a Samsung smart TV.

Like, help me please here.

A:Internet Drops Out, Consistent Speed with Modem, New Router - no solution

OK, but lets solve on thing at a time 1) ignore the VPN at work and let's get the home router stabilized.
The mobile devices are difficult to diagnose, so 2) stick with the PC for now.

Standard questions:

did you update the ethernet & wifi drivers on the PC?
have you looked to ensure your new router has the latest firmware?
*if* you have a DSL connection to the ISP, do you have the line filters on EVERY device connected to the phone line EXCEPT the line to the modem? *MUST HAVE*
Got to get these right first.

THEN, find the MTU that's right for you AT HOME and set that into the new router:

get a command prompt
ping -l 1500 -f 8.8.8.8
as long as you see Packet needs to be fragmented but DF set., reduce the 1500 by 8 and iterate with the new number
:: record the MTU that works for your ISP at home
The router conf page is accessible using your browser and HTTP://your_router_address/
You need the router password
set the new MTU. Also set a new router password and save the settngs.

The wired connection should be solid at this point.

The wifi should also be better, as long as you avoid other stations with the same channel.
I assume you've see the post re inSSIDER for wifi setup.

I just bought a new modem to replace the one I am renting from Comcast (Motorola SB6120: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16825122009). I have been using an Encore (EHH-WI-G) 802.11g 54Mbps router.

I got everything hooked up last night and I noticed that when I was hooked up directly to the modem (ethernet), my internet was super fast. When I hooked up the wireless router and accessed the internet through it, my speed was noticeably slower. I used speedtest.net to see what my speeds were like:

Wired to modem: download 50+ Mbps (I don't know how in the world it read this high...I'm not even paying for these speeds from Comcast)

Wireless through router: download only around 5 Mbps

Can someone explain this to me? Is there a setting on my router that is restricting the speed in some way?

On my older Windows ME, I was able to see the connecton speed of the modem while I was connected to the internet. Saw amount of send and received bytes, and the speed of the modem itself. All I had to do was to click the icon with the two computer screens which was active when connected to the internet. However I am at a loss about how to do that with Vista. Athough a similar two computer screen icon appears in the lower right bar of my display, when I access it, instead of a pop-up that show me the connection information, I get no information about what the modem connection speed is, or the number of bytes received and sent.
Can anyone tell me just how I can access the similar modem connection speed information with Vista?

Hi everybody,

I have a high speed cable connection at home. It has been working fine.

Recently I took a VoIP(voice over ip) connection for my home. Now my cable connection to my PC is like this ------- the main cable from the cable modem is connected to the WAN port of the VoIP modem. And another cable is connected from the LAN port of the VoIP modem to my PC. Now since I took this connection I cannot connect to some servers. As it feels like that my PC is behind some sort of firewall or something because of the VoIP modem.

I'm just wondering whether this problem can be solved by using a router/hub or not?

Please provide your suggestion.

Thanks for the help.

A:High Speed connection through VoIP modem

You are correct, there is a NAT layer in the VoIP box. What I did to solve this issue with mine is configured the VoIP adapter to put my router in the DMZ of the VoIP NAT layer. That allows full access through to the outside world. You don't need more equipment, just a different configuration inside the VoIP adapter.

The make/model of the VoIP adapter would be a big help here.

It checks your internet setup.
Also check your router-setup to see if that desktop-port has been limited in its receiving speed (as compared to your laptop-port)

I just set up a two computer wireless LAN. One machine running WinME is wired to the router, the other W2K machine is wireless about 100 feet away.

Everything works well, I can shut both machines down and restart and it all still works.

However, after shutting down the machines over night and restarting in the morning, the router won't respond. I can't access the router with IE. If I shut down both the modem and router and the machines and reboot the modem then router then the machines it'll work.

On all the other networks I've dealt with, the modems and routers are always left on.

What should I be checking here? Up till now I've never had any problems with this type of setup.

The modem is a Qwest issue Actiontec GT701 while the router is a Linksys wireless 11MB.

TIA

A:DSL modem/router connection

It would be helpful to determine if the problem is with the modem or the router.

Can you disconnect the router and connect directly to the modem.
Then leave that computer on overnight.

If there are still problems it would point to the modem.
Otherwise I would start suspecting the router.

For work I was given a modem, which they wanted me to hook up directly to my home internet. However, I live in a town home and do not have direct access to it. Instead I have to use a port that I have in my wall. When I plug my modem into the wall the VPN does not light on the modem, which I assume is because I have blocked access as we need to register all our devices using the MAC address. The modem I have is a Cisco 881. Is there any way to find the MAC address if not listed on the device itself?

USUALLY, you wire the system to the router first and configure the router
to access your ISP. Typically, you use your bowser to access 192.168.0.1 and log-in to the device.
Once that is working, you enable the wireless feature, set the SSID and your security keys.
Now your ready to configure the desktop to use the wireless.

I can connect to the internet just fine if I run my modem straight to my computer. If I try to run it through my router, however, I can't get a connection. The internet light on the router does not light up and shows no signs of connection. The DHCP renewal doesn't do anything, either. I have tried multiple 'solutions' and am completely stumped. I have power cycled many, many times and reset the router to factory settings as well. I have tried cloning the mac address to match the computer and done all that I can (as far as my knowledge reaches). The tech support 'warranty' is also outdated, so there are no other options except for paying a ridiculous amount of money to talk to somebody. As such, any help on this matter would be GREATLY appreciated! I just got a new modem yesterday and that is when it stopped working through the router. This problem occurs with two different routers (both of which worked previously) so I don't think anything is faulty.

The modem is an ARRIS TM602G and the router is a Linksys WRT54G v.3

I will provide as much information as I can on request! I desperately need to resolve this issue.

I am having a confusing and frustrating problem, my internet connection is dropping every half hour at least (sometimes more depending on my internet activity). This connection loss is happening when my modem resets and I have no idea why it's resetting. Any help is greatly appreciated; wired network connections.

ISSUE:
As of right now, I am able to connect to the internet but only directly from my modem to my main desktop. When I have the router connected... there is no network connection on anything connected to router, not even my main desktop. I then started to see if other devices such as PS3 and laptop would work connected directly to modem. No connection can be made; however, everything shows pc activity. The only connection i get to work is when my main desktop is connected directly to the modem. I believe it is a network settings issue, involving router and/or modem. I've tried doing the whole reset router/modem/pc, and disconnecting reconnecting cables solutions but nothing.

SBC sent me a Westell Proline F90-610025-06 modem/router for my new DSL account. It works fine on one computer, but when I connected it to a second computer through a Linksys switch (ethernet cables), the second computer was not able to obtain a different local IP number from the Westell. Both computers show a address conflict error when they are both on. I pushed the buttons in the advanced section of the Westell menu, but could not find any way to expand the range of IP addresses available. The only option I could find was to change the lease time on IP addresses, or switch from PPPoE to PPPoA. I pushed repair connection in the computer LAN menu, but the computer was not able to get a different IP address. The Westell just kept giving both computers the same IP. This is my first broadband connection, so I am an amateur on connecting them.

Windows XP SP2 I tried powering everything down, and restarting in this order: Westell, Linksys, computers It didn't help. Manually inputting a different IP address on one computer's LAN connection didn't do anything either. How do I get the Westell to give different local IP addresses to different computers?

Hi everyone.

I work as a tech consultant, and I am stumped on this one.

I am working at a clients house. She has purchased DSL sevice though a hole-in-the-wall company called superpa.net.

They have given me particular parameters to make the computer connect to their POS system.

Set IP Address: 192.168.1.3
Set Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Preferred DNS Server: 63.169.216.98 alternate 204.117.214.10
Well that is all fine a good and the computer connects just great. But my client just bought a new laptop and wants wireless. Wireless is simple, well it should be.

I got her a basic Linksys Wireless-G WRT54G Router. Nothing Fancy.

Now obviously, the router must use the same setting as the computer. So I went in to the Config, and made it a static ip with all of the listed above. I changed the computer back to the auto obtain ip address and dns server, but I HAVE NOTHING!

The modem shows a conncetion to the router, and her computer shows a connection the router, but there is NO activity between the modem and router. No activity=No Internet
I called Linksys, they told me to contact my ISP, then called Superpa.net, they said they dont do any support for wireless, only for one hardlined computer. They would sent someone out to fix it $200/service call + $60/hour... I said forget it.

Anyone with any suggestions or solutions... I would be much abliged!!!!

Thanks,
Chris

I trust that you power cycled the modem when switching from computer to router.

If the Linksys LAN defaults to 192.168.1.x, change it to 192.168.0.x.

EDIT: and clone the computer's MAC address to the router.

Hello,

My current setup is a Netgear WGR614v3 router connected to an apartment complex network, servicing my wired desktop and a wireless laptop. Both machines run Windows XP and both experience the same slow down whether the connection is wired or wireless, while through the router.

Up until about a week ago, my connection speed through the router was equivalent to a direct connection to the port in my room. Recently, however, my speed while connected through the router has dropped below half that of a direct connection.

Things I've tried:

1) check with other people in same complex to see if they experience the same issue. My roomate, who has his own port, uses the same router as I do and has no speed issues.

2) Check router configuration. MTU is the same as before, 1500. I even completely re-setup my entire router via a factory reset and this did not resolve the issue.

3) Check Ports on router, in case some ports are damaged. I switched my cable through all the ports without any results.

4) Check CAT cables. The same cable that I use for my desktop provides full connectivity when going to the wall and I also tried different cables with no results.

5) Checked windows settings. XP firewalls were both disabled and no settings were any different than they were previous to the problem. I also played around with the link speed settings, changing between 100/10 full/half duplex.

6) Ran DSLreports. Came back with no real problems(besides noting a slow reaction to the ... Read more

Since your accessing the same routers as your roommate move your wired PC to the port that his stuff is wired to and move his to yours if his starts doing the slowdown then you know its a bad port in the router or a bad router if yours continues to slow down I would check your PC.

Honestly from what you put here though my only thought is sometime last week you got some virus or something that has now caused your PC to run slower.

Log into your Router setup and see if you are using the B or G or N settings. If using N, try G. If your using automatic, try B/G setting. etc. Reset the WPA-2 password.

Hello, I think I'm experiencing a NAT networking problem, as most games I play complain that my NAT is moderate, or sometimes strict. I've researched this and found out it may be a Double NAT problem.

I've also researched two solutions for this: Disable NAT and DCHP on either the modem or router, or set up a PPPoE connection between the two. Can someone tell me which one is the easiest to do and how to do it?

Router: Linksys E3200 w/ Cisco

Modem: Motorola SB5102

Other Info: This IS a broadband connection, and I believe it is a DSL or Cable setup. I also know how to access the router settings, and how to disable NAT and DCHP. However, I do not know how to connect to the modem (I do know the default IP for it) and don't know how to perform a PPPoE connection, as this would be my first time.

A:Setting up a PPPoE connection between router & modem

PPPoE is for DSL connections... Go to the router and modem websites and download the instructions from there. It will explain how to connect and access the router

Hey hey,

My fiance and I are both connected to our speedstream 6520 via ethernet cables. I mainly use my connection to play World of Warcraft, she uses hers for work (inbound customer service). The issue we're having is that when I play WoW while she's working, it disrupts her systems connection to her work server (i guess that's what she's connected to) and she gives me hell for it.

Is there anything that can be done so that we can both use the internet connection without interfering with the others fun/work?

Thanks

I'd like to network two PCs, both running Me and have a broadband connection , probably with Tiscali. I need someadvice on what modem / router I need to get. If I ask a shop or ISP I get slanted information.

I'd like to have the option of possibly changing provider in the future. (I'm aware that AOL seems to need a particular modem, I'd probably never want to sign up with them anyway).

Please can someone recommend either a suitable modem / router or the features and specifications I should be looking for. What does ethernet and 10/100 mean anyway?

Many thanks in advance.

A:Modem / router choice for broadband connection

Depends on your budget and how your system is going to evolve over the next year or two i.e. you could get a modem/router with wired and wireless connection such as those made by Draytek or a more simple single port router such as those supplied by some ISPs and use windows inbuilt software to share the connection [but this requires the main PC on for the others to connect].
There is also the possibility of buying a modem/router with inbuilt hardware firewall which whilst more expensive is a good security feature.
Linksys also make some excellent modem/routers at a good price.
Perhaps a look round the price comparison sites such as www.dealtime.co.uk will help you find the cheapest of those suggested.

What does ethernet and 10/100 mean anywayClick to expand...

It normally just means its 10Mbps and 100Mbps switchable dependent on the speed of the network card attached to it i.e. if the card is only 10Mbps then that port will run at the slower speed.

I have a D-Link router with a Bellsouth Westel modem in Bridged mode. It will work for some time and eventually I loose my network. I've been through the ringer with BellSouth and D-link tech support. It's as though the modem won't stay bridged. D-link had me set the router to enable DHCP as well as leave the modem unbridged. I know that eventually, they will conflict and I will lose my connection. Please help

After trouble shooting on my own, I'm stuck. My current situation is that I have a Netopia (Cayman 3346) DSL modem-router (not wireless) that is connected to a (Linksys E100) wireless router. I currently run a small business that has two other computers connected through the Linksys router and are properly configured on the network.

Problems, Thursday night was the last time I could connect using the wireless connection. I cannot connect wirelessly now, but I can connect through the Netopia modem-router.

Manual Troubleshooting included:

-CMD for proper release/renew (IP shows 192.)
-Hard reset both modem and router.
-Manually configured the Linksys router.
-Called Netopia and manually configured modem-router successfully
-Again, computers hard-wired to modem-router will connect.
-Lights on Linksys router are lit and working properly (i.e wifi icon, power, and line 1)

Any ideas? I found in the Netopia settings of the WAN to be configured this way, should I change to IP Address?

Any help would be appreciated as my business is hindered by only having one computer operational.

EDIT: Here is a picture from the Netopia WAN configuration page

Just purchased a Linksys WRT54G2 router so my wife can surf indepently in the house. The problem is that in trying to connect with the installation software I cannot find connection instructions. This is because 2 years ago when my daughter was home with her laptop computer we connected a very similar Linksys router. When I insert the CD-ROM to get instructions the software says "it appears you already have a router connected." and since this is the only way to make the connections I have to try and find the proper connection method here. The dsl modem is a Westell 6100.

I hope I'm posting this in the right category...
In any case, to begin, I just want to let whoever reads this know that I am definitely not the most experienced tech guy out there. A technician is supposed to come Sunday morning to help try and figure out this problem, but I figured I'd post it here and see what kinds of responses I receive.

A few days ago, I returned from a vacation to find that my old modem, a Motorola, had burnt out/died/lost power; I'm not sure. So we (my father and I) purchased through the recommendation of a Cox representative a relatively new 2 in 1 modem/router unit called the Gateway.

The wired connection, which we use for the desktop, has been perfectly fine. My laptop on the other hand, which I use wirelessly, might as well have no connection at all. Initially, it had no problem connecting to the new unit. I brought up my homepage, which came up deceptively quick, and told the technician that all appeared to be working normally. However, after going through some other websites, I found that it was loading pages/videos EXTREMELY slowly. After a while I did a speedtest, and after many trials I'm finding my average download to be about 1 Mbps, and upload to either be higher (?) at about 1.4 Mbps or unreadable. It should be noted that with the package we have, we should be getting about 30 down and 3 up.

My father and I talked with a couple Cox representatives on the phone, but they couldn't decipher the problem. There is ... Read more

I'm having problems with my internet connection and modem/router. It's an Actiontec gt704wg, which serves as both a modem and wireless router. One computer is connected directly to the router and 2 others use wireless. The connection just randomly cuts off, the internet light goes blank, the dsl light flashes, and then it takes about 15-25 seconds to reconnect. I get tons of static on my phones, and the frequency of disconnecting goes up whenever i get/make a phone call. In addition, when I connect the other computers wirelessly, i get tremendous delays and more disconnections, and it takes several minutes to reconnect. The router's not old, about a year, and I've had no problems with it until recently. I've changed all my dsl phone filters, so I know it's not that. Can anyone help me?

It sounds to me like something wrong with the router or, less likely, wireless interference. Looking at the second one first, do you detect any other wireless networks on your same or close to your channel? Any 2.4Ghz cordless phone?

Next I suggest looking for a firmware update for the router. And my final (at least for now) suggestion is to reset the router to factory default settings and reconfigure.

Hi,

I have this problem with my home wireless network for quite sometime. I am using cable broadband with the motorola modem and aztech router.

The problem is that my internet connection drops suddenly everyday... I will power off my modem and router, restart it but still cannot get internet access. after a few tries, it might come back...

I have tested my router at my friend's place and it is working fine. So i thought it's the modem problem, so i also went to test the modem at my friend's place and it's working fine too. I even bought new ethernet cable.

I do not know much about hardwares and wireless networking. I do hope I can find the problem and get it solved soon...

would you post the following tests when the internet is working OK, and then repeat ALL the tests when the internet disconnects.
Make sure you also indicate on the reply which tests are for what condition.

As you are connected by wireless, please include the xirrus screen shots for both conditions - see how below.

Please post back here the make and exact model of the router and the make and exact model of the modem.

Please make a note of the status of the lights on the modem and on the router when working normally - post that light status here.
Now when the internet disconnects make a note of the status of the lights for the modem and router here again. also note which have changed.

About every 1-2 weeks my router loses the connection to the internet via cable modem. This has happened with 2 different cable modems (Netgear CM212 and Motorola Surfboard 5100) and also with 2 different routers (Netgear 614 and D-Link DI-524). When this happens the thing that usually fixes it is unplugging the router for several minutes and then plugging it back in again. I have Windows XP set to automatically detect the internet connection, and the router is set to use DHCP. Sometimes I also have to bypass the router and then put it back (so this could be partially a Windows problem?). Is there any way I can configure the router so it doesn't keep losing the internet connection? I have Comcast cable modem service.

Thank you.

OK, I'm having some trouble with my DSL connection. Right now it's working, but it's starting to slow down again which means that I'm soon to be disconnected totally. My provider says that nothing is wrong on their end (which I've confirmed with 2 neighbors) so it must be on my end.

My connection starts to work REALLY slowly and then eventually just quits working altogether. My "status" light on my DSL modem/router is completely black, the other lights are green, however, the LAN light is blinking furiously (I don't really know if it's always been that way or not... )

Anyway, I called the "tech support" people at my provider, and they walked me though some steps that seemed to alleviate the problem for now, but I want it stopped permanently!

I put in the "IP address" (shown on the IPconfig command prompt) into firefox's address bar and it pulled up the Zoom information page and I went to the system status portion like I was told to do, but there was NO IP ADDRESS!! NONE!! So we cycled the modem--nothing. We powered down the computers--nothing. I unplugged the ethernet cable from one port and moved it to another--PRESTO!! The internet works again!

I'm not even sure why this worked the way it did, because my laptop is wirelessly connected....why did changing the port of my desktop do anything? Or was it just chance? And how do I keep this from happening? Ideas?? Suggestions?? Anyone??

OK, here's the situation. I have a Dell E1505 laptop with Windows Vista that I use as my main computer. I am connected to the internet with a 2wire2701HG-T router/modem. I just bought a Acer Aspire One D250 with Windows 7 Starter and connected it wirelessly to the network. Now, however, when the Dell is connected to the modem by ethernet, my preferred connection for security, speed, and battery issues, the internet connection on the Acer slows down to nothing and soon disconnects. After a bit, it reconnects, but is still very slow, only to disconnect again. However, when I connect the Dell by wireless, everything works normally. Is this a modem problem, or is it an issue with one of the computers? I must admit, my networking skills don't go beyond being able to set up a network name and password.

Is a router with 11 mbps faster than one with 56mbps? I have sypatico with 100 mbps speed and im trying to find a router that will allow for high speed transfers. does router speed make a difference, does download and upload speed all rely on how fast my sympatico is?

A:Question about router speed and internet connection

No. The router normally allows the full speed from your ISP-provider (which is hardly ever more than 2MB anyway). So any router would do for that matter.
The switch-part of the router allows traffic between PCs on that netweork. That is limited only by the Switch-speed (either 10MB or 100MB) and/or the PC's NIC speed, also normally 10/100MB. Some more expensive routers allow network-speeds of 1GB, provided all the PC-NICs are also 1GB.

My dad currently has DSL service through AT&T. When he first purchased and set up the service, he was given a Siemens SpeedStream modem. Over time the connection speed has slowed to a crawl; I'm not sure if this is due to the modem itself, the computer's network card, or something else entirely. He's seen the different routers for sale at computer stores and neither of us were sure if they would be compatible with his current setup, or even if buying one would have any kind of benefit speed-wise. He doesn't want to upgrade or change services if he can avoid it. Any thoughts?

The choke point is the ISP not the router. What are you supposed to be getting from them?

I have Belkin WAP in my living room hidden on top of the Grandfather clock. Getting it up high helped a lot. The biggest help is keep anything, and every thing away from it no matter what it's made of. Anything in proximity of the antenna(s) will detune them and they will suffer for it. It does the same as this, from Start-->Run--CMD

net start "DNS Client"

Just cache built up usually, also try clearing out all temp files with CCleaner

I have a motorola surfboard cable modem from time warner connected to Linksys WRT54G router, with one wired connection to the PC and a wireless connection to a laptop.

The connection to the internet is dropped every couple of hours from both computers and requires me to unplug the cable modem and then the router and then plug them back in before it will work again.

When the connection does drop, I cannot even access the router setup (192.168.1.1) from the PC. Also, this problem did not seem to happen when I tried connecting the PC right to the cable modem without the use of the router. This is why I think it is the router.

I tried setting the router to clone MAC address, and setting the MTU to 1400, but I am still having the same problem. Does anyone have other suggestions about what else there is to do?

First things we normally recommend are:
Download the latest firmware for your router.
Reset your router to it's default config by holding in the reset button for at least 15 seconds.
