CCleaner

Q: CCleaner

Good Morning:
I have been using "ccleaner" for several years and it seems to work well. As you might know, this utility udates about every 4 weeks or so. My question is: Does the new update remove the older updates? If not, there must be a huge file on my PC somewhere? Should I be concerned about this file if it does in fact exist?

Thanks: Dave

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

After I have run "analyze" and get the list of items to be deleted, how do I remove one or two of those items?

A:CCleaner

I'm not sure you can---directly.

But you can change what you have checked in the left side and that will effect what is shown when you analyze.

hi

I have installed quite lot of programs and deinstalled again, if I don't need on my notebook with WIN 7 prof. 64-bit.
Sometimes an uninstallation process not really 100%, some entries still remain in the registry.
Is it a good idea to clean WIN7 time to time with CCleaner?

A:CCleaner?

Upiter of course it is perfectly safe to use just remembering that any cookies you use for sites that you have a password for you keep. If you don't know how to do that post back but generally speaking CCleaner is very good at cleaning the unneeded stuff out.

If you use the reg check in it whatever is thrown up just make sure you save the results to Documents - it will give you that option before fixing them. if things go ape when you tidy the registry you can go back and replace the items from that back up.

Now for the stuff in the registry if you are not sure of doing stuff in there don't go there and in future when uninstalling programs use the Revo uninstaller it delves into the reg entries and will do a much more thorough job of uninstalling any programs by searching out the reg entires.

Download Revo Uninstaller Freeware - Free and Full Download - Uninstall software, remove programs, solve uninstall problems < the left hand list has the free version.

Does anyone have a professional opinion on CCleaner's registry utility's impact on your average system? I don't like that it removes 'unused' and 'obsolete' items (as the 'usage' can manifest itself pretty much anywhere and I'm afraid it'll break programs).

A:CCleaner

While ccleaner's registry applet is relatively benign, it does absolutely NO good. Nor does any other registry "cleaner". There is no such thing as a good registry cleaner, only those that don't do much (if any) harm. The best of them do no damage, while the worst of them will leave your system unusable. But NONE of them do anything useful. Stay away from all registry cleaners.

I was pointed in the direction in another thread on a different topic to ccleaner. I have since downloaded it and have played with it a bit. I do not know exactly how to use it. I did a scan on the registry and have a huge page full of listings. Is there a way to copy that and post it here? I am scared to have it "clean" the registy files before I know what they are.

A:CCleaner help.

Most here will probably tell you not to clean the registry, even with CCleaner, which is held in high regard generally. The chances of it having a measurable effect are minimal and you are taking some risk. But some people have a compulsion to clean stuff.

I've occasionally used the registry cleaner portion and have never had any trouble. But I've never noticed any performance improvement.

If you just can't help yourself and have to use it, do a backup when it offers you the chance.

A guru I know of says he has used it for a decade on the registry with no issues, but he leaves the "unused file extensions" checkbox unchecked.

Suit yourself. I don't think the comments on this forum about not using it persuades many people.

By all accounts, the other part of it--the regular cleaner---is nearly foolproof and many here use it enthusiastically. I am one of those people. I don't notice any performance improvement, but it does save space over time.

On my W7 laptop I have CCleaner which I use regularly but under Tools there is one listed as Duplicate Finder which shows a good deal of them when I run that. My question is should the duplicate files etc be deleted as most if not all seem to me seem to be software and OS files so I am very wary about doing so.
Thanks for any info on this.

A:W7 & CCleaner

Do not delete unless you know positively what you're doing. It isn't necessary. Todays' HDs have enough space that you don't have to worry about filling up.

A:Ccleaner

From the ccleaner web page:

CCleaner is a freeware system optimization and privacy tool. It removes unused files from your system - allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space. It also cleans traces of your online activities such as your Internet history. But the best part is that it's fast (normally taking less that a second to run) and contains NO Spyware or Adware!

If you need a program removed I would use add/remove programs.

I don't get the windows loading sign either. I can't use safe mode etc. I think it may have done something to my registry. Unfortunately didn't have a back up. And why should I care?

Seriously, I've read some stuff about it, and to my naive eye it seems like it does a lot of what MSIE/Tools/Remove Browsing History does when I tell that to delete temporary files.

So what's the difference?

Should I use Ccleaner? Or is the built-in tool in Windows/IE sufficient?

I use the disk cleanup part of CCleaner and it keeps my hard disk free of clutter by cleaning up temp files and other stuff. I don't think the registry cleaner part is recommended. Cleaning the registry does not speed up the computer in any way, so any speedup from CCleaner would be due to less clutter on the hard disk (for which the tool is outstanding).

A:CCleaner

Bleeping Computer does not recommend the use of Registry cleaners.Unless you have a specific problem you're trying to correct, it's best to stay out of the Registry.Registry cleaners mark entries as bad, depending on what the software creator "thinks", is bad. That's why no 2 cleaners will find all of the same, "problems".Registry "problems" actually have very little effect, on the overall performance of the operating system. Please see this article:XP Fixes Myth #1: Registry CleanersIf you're not experienced with working in the registry, DO NOT ATTEMPT IT.Improper changes to the registry could render your computer inoperable. If you do insist on using Registry cleaners, ALWAYS backup the registry BEFORE making any changes.Instructions, on how to do that, can be found here:How to back up, edit, and restore the registry(I highly recommend, you make a copy of this article.)

A:CCleaner

From your daughter's desktop, open up My Computer.
Click Drive C, then Program Files. Find the CCleaner folder, open it.
RIGHT click on the program icon, and either pin it to the start menu OR Send to and choose Desktop.
If you pin it to the start menu it won't pin it to Programs but it will be pinned to the upper left hand side of start menu.

If it isnt broken dont worry about it. If it is do a repair install, or a complete install of the OS.

Hello,I'm moving this to the Other Applications forum. That said, I see that you are receiving assistance here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/333339/hijackthis-help/ ; therefore, you should NOT make further changes to your computer (install/uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc) unless advised by a MRT Team member, nor should you ask for help elsewhere. Any modifications you make on your own may cause confusion for the helper assisting you and could complicate the malware removal process which would extend the time it takes to clean your computer. From this point on the MRT Team should be the only members that you take advice from, until they have verified your log as clean.Orange Blossom

If you use ccleaner, just use the cleaner. Do NOT use the registry cleaner. I would never trust anything that attempts to "fix" the registry. Also, Windows 7 defrags itself automatically, so there is no need for a 3rd party defragger.

Is CCleaner a good program to use to uninstall programs, clean registry, clean computer? lol I have a bunch of programs i dont use and need to uninstall

A:CCleaner

If you need to uninstall, it is better to use the Add/Remove programs option in Win XP. CCleaner is a good program for cleaning up the registy and getting rid of unwanted files *Temp Int Files, Cache, Win Log files, etc* You can cuustomize the options to fit ur needs, for example not cleaning out cookies.

I love using the program, and it really helps to speed up the system.

I've been using this program for some time now, and it has a feature which you can use to scan your registry for issues, and then fix them.

It also allows you to create a backup before going through with the changes. I haven't used this in some time, and that's what I'm getting at. I've been using this feature pretty haphazardly without creating a backup beforehand, and I was wondering how safe this is.

I know messing around with your registry can cause a lot damage, but I was under the impression that with Crap Cleaner, it was relatively safe.

Anyway, I've not encountered any problems as of yet, but nonetheless, I figured it'd be good to at least have some idea of the implications of what I'm doing before I just up and do it without thinking.

So should I be using the backup option more often? Or can I pretty much just delete most of this stuff and not have anything to worry about?

RELEVANCY SCORE 32.4

Any CCleaner users can help me with this question. Seems like it can "clean" forever sometimes when I haven't even used the computer or browser. Ex. I can run the cleaner once, clean all the temp files and etc. Then run it again and there will still  be more to clean. After the second time all will be clean - 0 bytes. Strangely, sometimes when I run a forth time just for SnG's there will be the same files again that I could've swore I deleted on the first pass....what gives? To add, all the runs would've been done in succession.

Anyone else notice this characteristic on CCleaner? I have the most recent version.  Been using the app for a while and I like it, though this is weird I find.

Thanks

Mine behaves exactly the same way.  Possibly the 1st run creates some 'loose ends'.  Norton File Cleanup always seems to need 2 runs.  They all seem to be that way.  I just take it as another acceptable quirk.  IANM

I have Windows 98 at home, but I tried it on my work computer first which runs Windows XP Pro. While it didn't delete the deaktop icons, Outlook Mailbox or MY Documents, it seems to me the computer is actually running slower!

I apologise if this is in the wrong section. It is just information.

Up until recently, CCleaner showed all the startup programs including Chrome. The recent updates do not show any startup data for Chrome, the panel is blank. All the other sections are OK.

This has been reported to Piriform by a number of users including me and the message is that they are looking into it.

CCleaner does seem to include Chrome files etc. in the other cleaning options, but if one area of data is missing, I do not trust it. Perhaps the files now being shown are old  files and not current. Who knows ?
