Finding when a file was deleted

Q: Finding when a file was deleted

Hi, I was just wondering if there is a command prompt or anything else you can do to find out when a file was deleted.

I lost a bunch of downloaded files on the 24 of november this year and I was not on the computer that day, I did however have the computer with me and I believe someone I know deleted these files purposely.

I would obviously like to recover but that is not a big deal, however I am much more interested in finding out if the files were deleted on this day or when they were deleted.

If there is a log of when files deleted or something I can do to find out it would be of great help.

Thanks in advance.

Preferred Solution: Finding when a file was deleted

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Finding when a file was deleted

If they are still in the recycle bin then they should have a date of deletion marked .. you should be able to right click and select the column if it's not shown.

If the files have been deleted from the recycle bin then there are some pieces of software that can recover those files .. sometimes but not always the recovery software will notify you of the date and time deleted. It really depends upon the recovery software being used

Looking through my Document File "Alpha Address List"I accidently replaced the file with a Blank File of the same name . When I tried to open it there was nothing in there. I looked in the Recycle bin there were no files in there at all. Where had it gone ? How could I find it and restore it?

I believe I made a grave error next as I went into the Recovery Programme and picked a recovery point which was 4 or 5 days back from the day my "Alpha Address List" file went missing. When the restore had been completed I looked at the "Alpha Address File" and just a blank copy of that was there.

I realise now that all the recovery programme did was restore the Windows System Files and not the Office 10 personal document "doc" files.

It may be a lost cause now but is there any way I can retrieve the "Alpha Address List" file back .

Any assistance wiould be appreciated

Hello,

I apparently deleted some files, though precisely when is an open question (likely within the last 3 months). I have already run a few file recovery programs to no avail. The files are mostly scientific articles, so they are replaceable. The catch is I need to know which files that were deleted.

I know that Windows is renowned for the amount of data it logs about system activity. I was hoping that there is an access log buried somewhere that I could search for the folder names and find a list of the specific files that were deleted. Also, any recommendations on the program(s) that would be helpful in doing this. I am running Windows 7 Professional x64 on a Dell Latitude D830.

Thank you so much for any help you can offer

A:The possibility of finding a file access log detailing deleted files.

Windows does not log that kind of thing unless file system auditing is enabled and the appropriate options set. This is NOT enabled by default. This auditing would consume a large amount of disk space in quite a short period of time unless it is very selective.

The real solution to this kind of problem is to maintain backups of all important files. There are a variety of ways that data can be lost and not all are preventable and not all recoverable. You need to be prepared when (not if) something happens.

Can you verify further the issue? Did you deleted or uninstalled the program? Or did you mean you deleted the icons?

If you mentioning that you actually uninstall the programs, you may try system restore as an options, but there is no guarantee you can get the program again. You might want to give it a try and see.

Is there any free software online that is able to retrieve emails permanently deleted from an AOL account about 3 weeks ago? The email was also printed out that day in case if that helps in locating the lost email in some random sector of the hard drive.
Thanks!

A:Finding deleted emails

If the email was stored on the AOL server, and not downloaded in Outlook or Outlook express, you have zero chance of retrival, as it is stored on a server that you have no control over and would certainly be already written over.

If it did create a temporary spool file in memory while printing out, that will have been immediately deleted when the print operation finished.

If you actually downloaded it in Outlook or similar, then deleted it there is every liklihood it is in your email delected folder. But that is speculation as we don't know how it was accessed.

Strangely your editor does not allow me to enter a title Using Firefox.

Hello again,

No matter which undelete programme I try, not one of them will ever find a deleted file.

I copy a file to a directory on C: or D:, delete it and then empty the Recycle Bin. Whatever application I care to use, the file, which is very unlikely to have been overwritten, can not be found. No trace of it ever.

The undelete applications are on drive Z: so that running the undeleter should have no effect on drive C: or D: where the deletion has been done.

Is there something wrong with my discs, or is it the security app ? It worked in XP !

My computer is currently being upgraded to Windows XP at work and I had soem file son there back in 2005 that I deleted. These were personal files. Will the techs uncover these files while they upload all my current material on my compyuter now to the server only to bring it back down from the server on a new harddrive containing XP. If so what can I do to prevent these files from being seen? Like I said it has been almost two years since i had these files on my computer and have long been gone. I know that some files can be recovered but does this take a lotof time? ALso I store tons of info on my computer so is it likely that...the old material was written over?

Thanks,

If you deleted them, and emptied the recycle bin, it is doubful they will find them.
They would have to be deliberately looking for, and trying to recover, deleted files.
When upgrading the OS, that is not usually done.

I have a main directory with 80 files in it. I created 8 sub-directories under the main directory and put 10 files in each one. I had to restore everything from the recycle bin! Why did this happen?
Thanks,

In my Ult. Vistax64, Windows update hangs. I tried numerous fixes from Microsoft (MrFixIt) and others. nothing seems to fix it, including a full system image restore from a month ago.

System Restore also seems to have had its restore points deleted as there are only two recent saved restore points/images.

And I have noticed that after booting up, and perhaps at other times, my CPU usage goes to 100%. Both the Windows update service is running (wuauserv) - see pic - and when I stop it, CPU usage gets better.

what is a bit concerning is that my McAfee virus is also taking up CPU usage as if transfer activity over the internet is heavy. No viruses are found, either via real-time scanning or if I run a manual scan on the hard drives.

I have also run an sfc /scannow , there are a lot of PendingRenames, which seem to be from the sfc command fixing errors, as well as a lot of "duplicate ownership...", which is sort of scary to see when I have a problem with my computer.

Besides the failure of the windows Update, the SFC /scannow keeps finding corrupt files and repairing them, and it does not seem just limited to a few that "are erroneously marked as corrupt" and not a problem, according to research into these problems.
The computer seems to be working fine, but not being able to install updates is a problem, and the high CPU usage is suspicious. Any help would be appreciated.

Miles

So I opened an Office Writer attachment (.odt) from an email and made edits to that document. I hit save but not save as.Tried to open the file the next day but it got deleted. I did some research and realized that was stupid and looked everywhere for advice. So I've gone into temporary internet files folder and I cant find it there. I had deleteted my internet browser history yesterday. Following some random advice on the internet I tried to restore my browsing history by downloading som index.dat reader. Needless to say I am so completely lost. I just need to know if its even possible to recover it. Im willing to goto any computer shop and pay whatever it cost at this point. Oh and the exact message I'm getting is:

C:\Users\Paul\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Window\Temporary Internet Files\Low\Content\poli352a[1].odt does not exist

A:Need a file from temp internet file but I accidently deleted browsing history

First, download the free Process Explorer.

Run Process Explorer.

Open your e-mail program (mine is Outlook Express).

Open your e-mail message.

Open your attachment (Office Writer attachment (.odt)).

Inside Process Explorer, right-click the new process (from the application used to open that attachment).

Select Properties...

Select the Image tab.

Look inside the Command line bar.

You'll see the exact path to the temporary folder created for the attachment.

Make sure to check "Show hidden files and folders" and uncheck "Hide protected system files" in Folder Options.

Only copy the part from C:\Users to Content.IE5.

Note: a new folder number is created each time you open an attachment (e.g. IGSDF94V)

Example:

"C:\PROGRA~1\MICROS~2\Office10\WINWORD.EXE" "C:\Users\Owner\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\IGSDF94V\Example.docx"

Paste that path inside the My Computer address bar and click OK.

You'll have to look inside each folder manually for the name of your document. The folder number will be different from the one you're seeing inside the Command line bar in Process Explorer.

Do not run a Search. Look very carefully inside each folder. It should be there!

Hi Blaume, welcome to the Ten Forums.

I am sorry but when you deleted the user account, it's gone, all its files are gone, forever. The only way to get the file back would be to restore a system image made before the account was deleted.

The built-in guest account no longer works in Windows 10. However, you can create a new Guest account by yourself:

I did a google search trying to figure out how to locate a certain file on my hard drive and interestingly it gave me a link to this site. Unfortunately, I can't post the link because I do not yet have more than 5 posts.

However, when I try to open the link from either Google or a search hit from this site, I get an empty page.

Here's the title of the google hit:

C:\DOCUME~1\Jason\LOCALS~1\Temp\RtkBtMnt.EXE. If you search for this string using this sites search function, you will find the link

The wording that followed this headline lead me to believe the person answering the post was going to tell the poster how to find this file. I'm searching for a similar file on my hard drive. It is:

C:\Users\GGMARQ~1\AppData\Local\Temp\RtkBtMnt.exe

In doing so, I guess i deleted the movie. So now I need to know, how is it possible to quickly retrace what site the movie was on. If your friend SENT you the link, it may still be in your email.
But if you cleaned cache and history there is no hope left.

But do a Search on your PC for *.mpg or *.mpeg, it might still be there.

I so recently downloaded America's Army. (Its free and legal to download).
I was in safe mode and unzipped it while in there. Somehow it got placed into.

C:\DOCUME~1\OWNER\LOCALS~1\Temp\RarSFX0

Afterwards it tried to install but couldn't cause I was in safe mode.

So after booting into normal mode I ended up unziping it to desktop (Like I was supposed to) and installed it correctly.

Problem is my Harddrive is almost full (Only 13.5 GB freespace). And I'm wondering if the first time I unzipped it is somewhere on my computer just taking up space. (Its a 2.5+ GB file)

Before the DL/install I should have had somewhere around 17GB free). I just deleted the installer and the files I unzipped to desktop so the only thing now is the actual game, and the first set of unzipped files.

Any idea how to locate the first file so I can delete it? Thanks.

Should be in c:\documents and settings\owner\local settings\temp\

Running the disk cleanup utility could also help you : accessories => system tools => disk cleanup. Check everything except "compress unused space" as it can slow your computer a bit.

In the 5-step process, the following steps did not work:
2 - the Activescan site gave an error - not sure if it was the site or my computer
4 - the Windows update did end with an error. I do however have the automatic updater installed, so would hope to have the latest version already.

Thank you for your help!

Hi so i've got this problem. I need to find when a file was last opened and runned. I need to clear that history so that no one knows that i've been playing games when i shouldn't (don't say anything about just admit it and tell your parents). My cousin who found a way to bust me playing a game told my parents. All i can remember is that he typed ".(letter)" in like my data d drive (partitioned hard drive). This came up with a log showing what exe that was open and when it was last open. Please help me find this. Also dont know if this is important but asian parents. also the technique he use was on 7 forums before but i cant find it

A:Finding last open file

you will probably struggle to get any help with your issue.
many of us are parents here and will understand your parents wishes .
if you should be studying or have been grounded from playing games then you need to respect your parents wishes and get along.
you will probably find that they will allow you time for games and time for study.
when you can be seen to follow their rules.
after all i presume they pay for the computer and games.
when you are older you will be able to manage your time better but for now its your parents who have that responsibility.

now this is where you tell us you are age 45

I have downloaded some files but find it difficult to find them. I have found one or two of them by going into Start - search - all files and folders - and putting a word from the name of the file in. when it shows where the files are located, it only shows the first bit of information ie C: Documents and settings/ how can I get it to show all of the information where the file is stored so I can locate ALL of my files.
thanks

I have a data base of PFD drawings and I would like them to be accessible in a master schedule in excel.

As of now we type in a part # and a cell finds the part description and inserts it in the adjacent cell.

I worked out a way to make a hyperlink in a separate file that links to a folder holding the drawings (FYI, that's 800 hyperlinks !). My schedule sheet then uses a vlookup to find the hyperlink associated with the part number cell. The friendly name of the hyperlink in the intermediate spreadsheet is the same as the actual hyperlink, so the Schedule sheet shows a hyperlink in the cell and will open the drawing.

I'm not a programer but I can fudge my way threw such things. I woudl like to keep it simple:
Can I create a hyperlink in the Schedule that would reference a cell (part number) and find that PDF file (named the same as the part #) in a file folder and be able to hit that cell and open the drawing when needed.

I don't know VB, but I do use macros on occasion.

I hope this is clean. Any suggestions?

Thanks

A:Finding a file using a hyperlink

As long as your naming and placement of the files in a directory is consistent you can just append the file name into a hyperlink path. I think there are controls that will open Windows seach as well.

I am trying to find the actual file for the Photo Printing wizard. I looked, and looked, and for the life of me, can't find where it is. Would anyone have a clue? I know I can get to the wizard by highlighting pictures, right click, and then click print. What I want though is the actual file for that wizard.

Thanks.

A:Help finding a Wizard File.

Not sure how that would work even if you could. The Photo Printing wizard needs a picture file for it to work. It doesn't prompt you for a file to print.

OK i should admit that this was a slightly dubious file alledgedly proving a certain starlets dislike of underwear..... However the file name is so long that Windows XP will not let me delete it... also the file was corrupted ( no pun intended ) so has a zero file length.. I did virus scan the download and AVG said file was not virus.... anyway i need to get rid of it any ideas....!!!

A big shout out to all replies But the Biggest thanks to Moderator John Will who had the simple idea of shift everything else then delete folder........ Why is it always the simplest ideas that work best... PS I eventually saw evidence of starlets dislike of pants on google images.... Take off safe search and leer away without having to download any suspiscious files.

Thanks Again
