Slower SSD performance with official drivers

Q: Slower SSD performance with official drivers

I had been tearing my hair out for the last 2 days trying to work out why my SSD performance was slower than my previous computer (Q9300, GA-EP41-UD3L with no AHCI, 4GB DDR2 RAM) and realised that it was the SATA drivers that came with my motherboard. As soon as I went back to the Windows default AHCI SATA drivers my read/write speeds were about 280MB/270MB per sec. once I installed the Intel ICH10R drivers and the Marvel SATA 3 drivers, my performance dropped to about 240MB/235MB per sec (This is using ATTO Benchmark)

Anyone notice this and is there a solution for this problem?

P.S. It also appears that the Intel/Marvel drivers do not support the TRIM command as when I run a program to force this to happen, the drive does nothing (whereas it works with the default drivers)

Preferred Solution: Slower SSD performance with official drivers

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Slower SSD performance with official drivers

Hello Scorpian, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You might give the beta Intel AHCI SATA drivers a try to see how it works for. It supports TRIM. I got better performance with my SSD with this one.

The latest official WHQL Intel AHCI SATA drivers (Intel Rapid Storage Technology) also supports TRIM, but it not the latest version as the one above.

Hope this helps,

I just installed the office AMD VGA Driver jan 17 2017 16.40.2701.1. once through amds regular install and then a second time after using DDU in safe mode.  I can now access radeon addition settings display color setting all drivers since 16.9 drivers.  I use a tv as a display and need that function greatly.  I havent been able to get it to show that tab with AMDs newest drivers at all.  My new problem is with Lenovos drivers my apu is max 800mghz constantly when plugged in. I attached a pic so you can see.  The APU going from 800 to 300 was me plugging and unplugging it.  This is an issue for me now because I down clocked my CPU to play some games and now im crashing constantly from what my guess is the APU at 800 mghz constant even with little no no load.  THis is so frustrating Lenovo and AMD.  THis is the flagship laptop for AMD right now and Its terrible with drivers.  So any help or explanation would be greatly appreciated. I just want to use the newest drivers with display color settings.  Its not that hard to ask. EDIT in radeon additional settings I always have used maximum performance when plugged in and now when I switch it to optimize battery my APU for down to 300 when in idle or light load like it should and used to with all the other drivers ive used and left it on Maximum Performance.  This sucks if that settings on optimize battery the cpu runs at 2.5ghz on high performace. &... I had this problem with the earlier 66.71 drivers and I just installed 66.93 and had the problem again (I was using a nonofficial driver, can't remember number). What it appears to be doing is taking the polygons of certain things and extending them, like lines, across the entire world, they move with the originating entity, but they just extend to infinity... This has happened with both Far Cry and the World of Warcraft Beta, both of which worked fine with the non-official drivers. Has anyone ever heard of this kind of thing before, or am I alone in this?

Hello and welcome to Techspot.

Did you completely uninstall the old driver first?

Also when installing drivers it`s a good idea to disable any antivirus programme you are using as this can seriously screw up the process of installing and uninstalling.

Your files aren't stored in the main Toshiba files, which probably means Toshiba no longer supports your model. But they are still stored in the listed archives. This is all the files I could find for your device Windows 7 32bit

Important drivers

Firmware: You will need at least one of these but not all, use the one you know you had before the refresh. If you don't know which one you had then use the top one.

Hello HP community,I have quite a problem here. I game on this HP 15-r032nx notebook that I obtained about a year and a half ago (as silly as it seems, but I'm a low-spec gamer, so anything goes), and I've been vouching for Intel to grab the latest Intel HD Graphics drivers, as the official ones provided by HP are sorely outdated (a little bit over a year, to be exact, latest official driver was released back in August 2015), meanwhile Intel's latest driver update was released in the middle of August 2016. But, the big thing was, when I decided to revert into HP's official latest drivers, all my games' performances improved marginally. I seriously feel the performance could be further improved by having HP release their version of the latest drivers for Intel HD Graphics 4400, but unfortunately I do not see that for my laptop model. Anything going on here?

A:Official HP Intel HD Graphics 4400 Drivers Outdated

Nothing is going on. HP does not create the drivers for the HD 4400 graphics, Intel does. It is their product. The graphics solution  is on the same chip as the CPU\APU and not on the system board. Your best source for an Intel HD 4400 graphics driver will be at the Intel driver download website

Before hand, I'd like to thank all of you for your help and advice. You guys are doing the internet a wonderful service.

I've been noticing that a huge drop in my fps rates in my games. The one that I use the most, League of Legends, dropped from 60 fps to an average of low 30s and 20s. This slowing down is across the broad for all of my applications. For instance, firefox looks kind of choppy when I scroll down. Even right now, as I'm typing this, the text is lagging behind at certain points. Also, I'm not sure if it's related, but when I was buying games off steam, I used two different credit cards. These cards used were duplicated and used in a different state. I'm pretty sure it's infected with something, but I wanted to get the opinions of people who know computers.

I had one of those rogue anti-virus programs, but I followed the instructions to remove it. I think there may have been other problems with the computer though.

I have avira and Malwarebytes one my computer. I've ran them both in safe mode, and they don't really come up with anything. Avira found some exploits, but I removed those. When I look in task manager, it doesn't show any cpu usage, normally. It hover from about 0-5% when there aren't any other programs running.

I am using Windows 7, I have a ge force 9600 gt, the computer is about one year old, it has a Nvidia dual core 3.2 ghz, and I use a wireless adapter to connect to the internet.

A:Slower Performance

First off, ur problem may be the fact you are running two active anti virus programs. Anti Virus programs/suites take a fair amount of system resources to run, ive tried running two and it slows down the system noticably. Personally i use Ad-Aware never had anything slip past it. Malware Bytes is also a trusted anti virus that should do the trick. If anti virus dosent do it, try system restore as long as you system settings havent changed dramatically. Just open quick start and type in system restore and it should pop up, follow the wizard and select the date of the restore, that is usually my last resort before a clean install. Remember to try and backup ur system when doing so.

I installed SP1 last night with much expectation of faster boot times and all that I read about it, but it all happened opposite. Here is the comparison:

I tried copying 2.46GB and 4.21GB files before and after SP1, on same drive and across a partition. On an average, it takes about 30% more time now after SP1 is installed compared to before SP1.

Coming to startup/shutdown, Pre-SP1 windows used to shut down in about 14 seconds, now it takes 20+ seconds to do that. One time, it even took 38 seconds (oh crap).......... Startup used to be average 1 min 20 seconds, now after SP1, its 2 min 5 seconds. It used to take about 45 seconds before logon screen will show up, now it takes 55 seconds. From the logon screen, up until desktop was ready to use with all programs loaded and sidebar visible, used to take about 30 seconds, now it takes 1 min 10 seconds. On the whole, about 1 min more to startup and ready-to-go.

Restart time was about 1 min 30 seconds before SP1, now its about 2 min 30 seconds. Here too another 1 min. added to the restart times.

3dMark06 scores were same before and after.

With all of this, I am pretty ready to uninstall SP1, but I also know that there are far more people who have better results with SP1 than ones who experienced degraded performance. So in my case, should I try deleting some stuff somewhere, reinstall SP1, or uninstall it completely. I like vista, but after having a much snappier performance earlier, I cant bear with this slow vista experience... Read more

Hello all. My laptop used work perfectly until the day I decided to remove all the extra stuff by doing a clean install of Windows 10.  I predownloaded all the drivers I would need and then did the clean installation.  Now I have an issue with my wifi.  It randomly drops connection to wifi and is slow to start working again.  After coming out of sleep it does not automatically reconnect to the ap and I have to trigger it manually.  Separately (i think) when coming out of sleep, the login screen does not respond to the keyboard and I am forced to use the mousepad to click or a touchscreen swipe to get to the password field. What I'm seeking is an official list of drivers that are required for a clean windows 10 install on a thinkpad yoga series 20CD.  If order of installation is critical, please give this also.  I believe I downloaded everything available from the support page but just want to be sure.  Sometimes not all drivers are available when filtering by OS "Windows 10".   Thanks in advance. Laptop specs are:512gb ssdmemory card slot2.4/5 n/ac wireless 7260ac w/bluetooth

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. If you have Windows XP, the search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

I see you have ewido installed. Update to the newest definitions. If you have trouble updating, you may do it manually at http://www.ewido.net/en/download/updates/ Do NOT the Ewido scan yet.

FSB and DDR speeds have nothing in common. They wouldn't affect each other at all. It depends on what speed of RAM ur mobo supports. if it supports 400MHz, for example, and ur using a 333MHz module, then u will not be utilizing the full power of ur mobo that's all.

Hi! I've had my Lenovo T530 for about four years, so I know it's not altogether strange if the performance should start to drop. That said, I've had this problem come on so suddenly that I don't think it's necessarily just wear-and-tear. I got a new Lenovo charger yesterday evening after my previous one broke. My old charger was an AF09 model with 100-240V input and 20V output. The new one is a PWR+ PWR-TA model with the same specs, except that there's the number 3.25A next to the output while the previous one had 4.5A. I have no idea what this means (nor do I know much about computers in general) so I'm not sure if this is significant. Anyway, since receiving the new charger last night my laptop has seemed to run extremely slowly at times, especially when charging, though it's not quite at its former speed when disconnected either. It's mostly quite slow to boot up or exit sleep mode, and video playback suffers from a bit of buffering where there was none previously. I suspect that the new power supply may have something to do with it, though I can't imagine why. I'm not sure if I want to go through the trouble of returning the charger and getting a new one unless I know it's the probable cause. The only other cause I can think of was that after my last charger broke, my computer ended up dying on me as I tried to finish some work. Being an older laptop, the sudden death may have just hastened what was already happening. I'm running Windows 10 and I was o... Read more

A:Computer performance slower since getting a new charger?

Your original charger was 20v 4.5A, that is 20x4.5=90WThe new charger is 20v 3.25A, that is 20x3.25=65WThis means there is less power available to yor T530. This could mean that your CPU throttles to account for the smaller charger. This means it is running slower as there is not enough power to run at full speed. Having said, if you have the battery connected there shouldn't be a problem, but I will stop here waiting for others to contribute to this answer.

Hello, I upgraded from Windows XP to Windows 7. I have a 2.1Ghz HP, 2 GB DDR2 RAM, and a 512MB GeForce Asylum AGP video card. I noticed that it kept all my files before I formatted to Windows 7 they're all under my Windows Old folder.

Anyway, after formatting windows 7 I noticed the performance of my comp went down the games im playing run slower and I need to configure lower graphic settings to run them as well as they did on XP I wanted to try the Beta out for Battle Swarm and my comp should be able to play it but even with all settings set on minimum it just runs terribly on my comp.
Any ideas how I can fix this or why my comp seems to run worse after formatting windows 7?

Thank You

A:Performance is slower after installing Windows 7

It might help to check whether you are using the latest display driver for your card that is compatible with your version of W7. Also check if there are any bios or chipset updates available for your system. Enable AHCI if appropriate (i.e., you have a SATA drive).

Also, not the cause of your problem, I'm sure, but it couldn't hurt to defrag your hard drive.

Check your event viewer, application tab for errors. It might provide some clues as to what the problem is. Check power settings and make sure they are not limiting your performance (maybe try the high performance setting).

I have a fairly fast computer i guess and i do use torrent fairly frequently to download games, movies, and music.Recently while playing a game, gta 3 san andreas... the game suddenly crashed for apparently no reason. Afterwards all actions (such as using windows media player, opening folders, going onilne, etc.) suddenly became a lot slower. It didnt seem to be malware or something because no actual change happened to the computer other than the slowness. I had ran virus scans with Ad aware with Lavasoft and Super Anti Spyware with no results within scanning for hours. i had ran freeware AML registry cleaner but the computer would randomly reboot before the scan could complete with a blue screen appearing right before the screen booted. After turning off automatic restart for system failure i got a good look at the screen and it read:
Beginning dump of physical memory
Physical memory dump complete
I had also tried rebooting with "Last known good configuration but still had the same problems
I still have 90gb free space with 250gb used and usually have had no virus problems other than a malware issue that was resolved by my sister (who is away now and cannot help anymore). Disk Defragmentation is done so that should also not be a problem.

Help would be very appreciated

Hello Ebb1611

Things to try
1. Test the RAM
2. Update your video drivers

1. Test RAM
If you have more than one stick of RAM (256MB or more) swap them over or take one out and try again with only stick #1. If it does not help or makes things worse swap the sticks and try again with only stick #2. Running with one stick at a time will identify if you have a bad stick. Try moving the RAM to a different slot as well.

You can put either of these free programs on a floppy and test the RAM. Let them run for hours to do many passes if you can

memtest86 http://www.memtest86.com/

Windows Memory Diagnostic http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp

Memtest on CD ( this is a bootable CD and can be used when you cannot access an operating system)

Use your CD burner to write it onto a CD as an ISO image
Test with only one stick of RAM installed at a time

2. Video drivers
Go to the manufacturer of the video card`s site and look for updated drivers for your card.

Hi! Thanks for providing this site...it's proven quite helpful to me these last few days. I'm not sure what (if anything) I'm "infected" with, but when I look at my running processes it seems many need not be there. Further, my computer is lagging big time, SFC is finding nothing, defrag isn't recommended, adaware comes up clean, and I just reinstalled my AV software because I found it wasn't functioning properly. I haven't run a new scan yet..thought I'd post these logs first. I'm coming here from the malware forum where a mod spent a few days and many scans with me regarding an infection - this is the thread:

Mod declared my scans clean an suggested I come here since I'm still having performance issues and since my fan has been running non-stop since the infection.

Browser seems to tax cpu up to 90% which isn't normal making performance slow.

I had a different fan problem a while back where the fan would rev erratically like a motorcycle. I solved that problem by going into bios and changing the ac cpu speed from Maximum to battery optimized. The result was the fan normally turning on and off when necessary. That didn't work this time and fan simply runs steadily nonstop now which is a new behavior I haven't ever seen.

Please let me know what additional information you need so that I can either pull it from the malware thread or provide you with new information.

Thank you.

Hi there

My names GamingJon and I will try to help you fix the few problem that you have in the next few posts.

Heres a few tips for increasing performance after malware removal;

1. Remove any bloated or un-needed software that is taking up space on ur HDD
2. Delete Temp Files, Start, Run "%temp% Enter. Delete All files is this folder
3. Download CCleaner, but dont install yet.

Before I give you loads of other tips for increasing performance I need some info;

Is your Internet Speed and Connection ok? No slow loading page that are usually un-normal/

What about start-up time are they slow, quick or average?

Is it possible for you too post a screen-grab of your task manager to let me know which processes are using the most Memory and CPU please?

Once I know the answer to the above questions I will be able to help you in more detail..

Thanks GamingJon

Previously, my laptop[Dell inspiron 1520] ran every game out there on
medium to high settings with a high amount of frames per seconds.
Surfing the internet, browsing whatever went smooth.

NOW though, everything I do is laggy, slow etc. The game Football
Manager 2009 runs so slow that it's unplayable.. when I play Warcraft
3, quite an old game, on the same settings that I used
previously(highest ofcourse, though 1024x784 resolution), I'm getting 20-30 frames per seconds..
When I previously had around 60-80 atleast.. the same can be said about
several others game as well. And since I'm using STEAM(Valve product)
on some of them, DVD's isn't required to play the game. Thus leaving
out the DVDrom. Playing LEFT 4 DEAD is also unplayable, last time I tried it, even on LOWER settings I had about 25 FPS when we didn't face the zombies.. but when the zombies arrived, I was down to 10 fps or something.. This was a game that was fully playable at higher settings, going smooth just a couple of weeks back.

When I'm watching the windows taskmanager to observe the CPU usage and
Memory usage etc, the memory is quite normal. The CPU is going bananas
if I drag a window(I.E winamp, MSN window etc) around the desktop at a
high pace. And sometimes it gets so laggy that the window gets
-temporary- "duplicated" many many times when I drag the window around.

A:Major drop in performance, my Laptop(insp. 1520) running games/videos etc way slower than before

Hi guys,
I had a similar problem with one of my laptops. The problem for me was that the computer was EXTREMELY slow in general, for example when i clicked on the start menu, it took a few minutes for it to open. I tried everything, even a reinstallation of Windows Vista but it didn't solve my problem. To my big surprise, when I deactivated my wireless network card ( by accident ) the computer was back to normal again. I don't know how this is possible and sadly the warranty has expired so I can't get my wlan-card replaced. This is probably not the solution to your problem but I thought I'd share it anyway

Hopefully this might be an easy one!

Basically, when I install Vista on my PC for the first time, the boot time is so quick, the progress bar only goes across once or twice and takes roughly about 30 seconds to boot up.

However then i install the drivers (I think the chipset (790fx) drivers are the culprit) the boot time doubles/quadruples and the progress bar goes across about 8-9 times.
Obviously this is quite a pain, drivers are supposed to improve performance, not reduce it!

I'm sure this isn't supposed to happen, but the drivers are all completely up to date.
Does anyone know if this is just a fact of life, or just shoddy programming?
I'm almost tempted just not to install drivers because my computer is quicker using the ones provided with Vista (i mean since when does that happen?)

Thanks for replies and help! I'm happy to post more info if needed.

I was wondering if someone could help me with updating the drivers for my graphics card and possibly other systems on my laptop. I currently don't trust myself with updating myself due to the many different versions and so I don't won't to cause irreparable damage. Also, would it be possible to point me in the right direction to get the most out of my system gaming wise.

Windows 8 64bit OS

CPU - AMD A-10 Quad Core 2.3GHz processor - Version Date - 21/04/2009, Driver Version - 6.2.9200.16451
Graphics - Crossfire Radeon 7660G + 7670M - Currently using the 13.6 Beta 2 Catalyst.

(I have Razer game boost installed but not sure if im using it right as i see no difference with it on or off).

Thanks in advanced.

A:Drivers and Gaming Performance

Hello again Professor,

Just wanted to thank you again and I have a few suggestions to get you started:

1- Check for updated drivers here: Drivers and software - IdeaPad Z585 Notebook
Note: I wouldn't go searching anywhere else for drivers until step 2 and (maybe step 3) are completed.

2- Run a WEI test so our gamers can look at your scores:

3- Consider downloading the Passmark Benchmark Testing Software and running the complete test suite. It comes with a full 30 day free trial. Once run, you can search for others that have your same configuration and you can even drill down the search to your specific graphics configuration so you can compare the results yourself (or post them for comment):

PassMark product listing - Diagnostic and test software for computers

This will provide some additonal information that I'm sure will be quite useful in evaluating you current performance.

Good luck.

Hello all,

Like the title says, I updated my graphics drivers yesterday and now all my games seem to be running remarkably worse. I know the typical solution to this problem would be to rollback to the old drivers, but I've tried it, and it didn't change anything. Games still seem to be running much slower, even if I turn down every possible setting. Is there anything else I can do about this?

I'm just guessing here, but I think whatever is causing the performance drops has to do with physics calculations. I notice when I try to play Watch Dogs, which I was running fine at 720p and high settings before the driver update, the frame rate drops to nothing if I get in a car and hit something.

Specific information about my system:
I'm running 64-bit Windows 8.1 Professional 64-bit.
My GPU is an Nvidia 750M and yesterday I updated to GeForce version 337.88. I also have an integrated Intel HD Graphics 4600.

I couldn't record at 1280x1024 in warhead before using vista, now i can record at that resolution with ease. performance has double also.

It freezes regularly and takes an abnormal amount of time to open something as simple as the control panel. When I start the netbook up, I get a light blue coloured screen before the desktop icons appear.

I got a popup message saying it was igdkmd.sys that was at fault for causing this performance issue. I can't find any idea or solution to this.
I thought that the igdkmd.sys was related to the graphics driver. I reinstalled the graphics driver after it failing to install a few times.

The netbook works fine besides this, any ideas as to why there is such an abnormal performance issue?

Yesterday, I was Skyping with a friend. I wanted to show him the shaders mod for Minecraft, so I screen-shared with him. Unfortunately, while I was screen-sharing, the picture on the screen started developing odd glitchy boxes. I thought it was an issue with Skype, so I stopped screen-sharing, and they went away. Later on, I was using VNC, and the boxes started showing up again. I then figured that it was probably either the monitor (which is pushing 10 years of age), the VGA cable, or the DVI-to-VGA adapter that was causing the problem. All of those were working fine. I checked to make sure that my NVIDIA drivers were up to date, and they were. I unplugged the graphics card and booted using the integrated graphics on the 4770k, and everything was fine. I plugged the GTX 660 back in, and uninstalled the device and its drivers. Windows immediately recognized it as a new display device, and used it as a standard VGA controller, which displayed things fine, albeit at 800 x 600. Windows installed the graphics drivers, and, sure enough, once the Windows device installer thing said it had installed the proper drivers, the glitchy boxes showed up again.

Not only are the boxes annoying, but they're also slowing down my computer's performance drastically.

I'm not sure if it's the card itself with the problems, or driver issues, but I'm now installing the drivers from the CD, in hopes of the problem being fixed. Has anyone else had this problem, or does anyone know how to fix it? Als... Read more

I have a problem with my Hitachi 3tb duo pro drive external hard drive. As i put more files it seems to get slower in one folder. An example is today, the access speed to find a patients name in it ( about 6k folders) would take about 30 secs. Before that it would only take 10 seconds and when i had about 4k folders it was pretty instantaneous. I've tried defrag, disk clean up, disabling background processes but I do not know how to solve this problem. Is the problem is too many subfolders in one folder? Or is there a solution to make it fast enough as I first started to use it. Yesturday it was not that bad but when i started today, it was unbearable. ANy feedback is appreciated thx.

A:Extkernal hard drive slow access speeds getting slower and slower

Well it depends how many loose files are in the folder. For instance say I have 10,000 pictures in one folder and that folder when I open it is taken for ever to load cause it is trying to cache all the contents and index all those files that are contained in it. If I go into that particular folder and create more folders lets say 10 folders, then place 1000 pictures in each folder then it will load a lot faster cause there not so many files in one folder to cache and index. Try and keep you files down to a moderate number of files inside the folders. It's like trying to stuff a bunch of paper inside a manilla folder it can only hold so many before it doesn't function any more....

Also most USB drives go idle and stop spinning after about 15 minutes usually, you can use the software that came with the drive to configure the usb to spin all the time. A 3tb drive is huge and I would consider partitioning the drive to 3 separate partitions of 1tb each that would speed things up considerably. Also 2tb is all that windows will see on a MBR partition if you want to keep it at 3tb then you will have to set it at a GPT (GUI Partition Table) for it to be used correctly in Windows 7.

Follow this tutorial on how to change the partition table from mbr to gpt:
