American Megatrends message on startup

Q: American Megatrends message on startup

This morning I went to turn my computer on and got the message below. It's saying something about the USB devices, but I don't have any devices plugged in to the computer. I know that one of my USB ports is damaged and has been for awhile. Could this be causing it? If so, how would I remove it? Do I have to take the computer apart? Is it something I can do on my own? I am not very computer literate.

Preferred Solution: American Megatrends message on startup

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, as you say it is likely to be a damaged USB port.

I don't know why but yesterday, after restarting my computer it beeped once then went to the AMI screen. Plus my computer has become very slow it might have something to do with it. I am asked to press f1 or f2 and if I press f1 I go to this configuration screen and I don't know what to do. But I do see that the word BIOS is written everywhere on the screen. It dose that every time I turn it on. I haven't had any big problems except my computer is running kinda slow. How do I get rid of the message?

Hi I have windows 7 on my pc. When I start up my pc it shows this weird message. I know it's not a virus cause I have a very good antivirus on. It says the following: American Megatrends - Usb Device Over Current Status Detected !!!
Sata port 5 : ST2000DL003-9VT166
S.M.A.R.T Status Bad , Backup and Replace
System wil shut down in 15 seconds!!!

A:American Megatrends message unknown

OK, you are running the system overclocked. Not too much however it shows both ram and cpu running faster than normal. It is probably the board failing however the very first thing I would do would be to return ALL settings to stock. Clear RTC [cmos] to return settings to stock. Once you clean RTC, pull the pw connectors from ALL drives; both hd and optical. Now disconnect any usb device ie printer, scanner, external drive, etc.

Pw ON and see if the board will successfully complete POST.

Remember there is NO safe overclock. All overclocking entails some degree of risk.

Hi

After turning on my pc this morning I got the usual beep and then the packard bell screen, then, a second or two later another beep and the American megatrends screen. The screen only shows for about two seconds and then the pc boots normally into windows. Is this something to worry about? i think two beeps means a memory error. The only hardware i have install was a cordless mouse yesterday. Using windows vista SP1 on Packard bell istart 2314. Thanks please reply.

Hello, experts!
For the past few weeks, I've been seeing the AMI screen everytime I turn on my computer. It wasn't like that before, so I have no clue why it's showing up now. I pressed f1 and f2 numerous times and went through every session, still I cannot find the problem of why it keeps appearing during startup.

Since I just received a new computer this April, I'm not very familiar with the new AMI then I was with Windows XP. Instead, I used screen-shot to show my AMI screen. I hope this will help!

What does this mean?

A:American Megatrends

This means that the hard drive is about to fail. S.M.A.R.T is a utility that monitors the health of the hard drive and reports any potential problems, like an early warning system. When it says "S.M.A.R.T Status Bad" This is not a good thing. Does it give you an option to bypass and get to Windows? If so backup your important data.

Ok, so before you reply, please make note that I didn't build this pc myself, it was custom built in a company by order. I don't know a thing about inside of computer. Of course, I know the main parts, but repairing or tinkering, nooo.

Pc specs:
Intel i5-2400 3.1 Ghz Quad Core
8 GB of RAM
Nvidia GeForce 550ti Graphics Card.

The thing is, in my opinion, this pc is properly cooled and built, because I've been having it for almost a year and I've never had this problem before.

So okay, I got back home and turned on my pc. And I noticed a problem. My video was slow. Videos on youtube were slow and choppy, I tried like moving windows and their movement was slow. At first I thought its a video card or monitor problem and I tried rebooting my pc. When I pressed restart, before booting windows, the computer shows the window:
American Megatrends

(Computer info)

CPU over temperature error!
Press F1 to continue setup.
Is it really overheated? Because I've never had this problem before, I didn't had it the other day I was using it and I'm using it a lot. What to do? I really can't just open up the case and see the problem, I'm not that experienced.

A:American Megatrends - CPU Over Temperature ERROR

Why can't it be overheating? Things do break, or come loose, and they can get dirty too.

Download HW Monitor and see what the CPU/Core temps are, for that matter check all the temps. Best would be to post a screen shot of HW Monitor.

HW Monitor: http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html

If the computer is truly overheating then it will need to be opened up to see why.

My Asus P5N32 SLI SE Deluxe doesn't like my new 4GB of 800MHz ram. The ram is fine. XP 32 bit runs fine with only 2-3 GB in use, but Vista Ultimate 64-Bit is terrible, running at least 5 times slower and maxing out the processor and freezing a couple of minutes just to open Fire Fox. I am considering buying a new mobo, but I heard there is another way.

Some people have gone into their BIOS and enabled an option called "Memory Remapping," which fixed the problem. The catch is: My BIOS doesn't have that option for some odd reason... Surprise, surprise after my cellphone provider had to send 2 SIM cards to me for the phone to work and my External Backup HD had failed just a couple of months after I bought it(Goodbye 100+ Gigabytes of data).

I checked the manual that went with my mobo, and the bios version in the manual and on my computer were EXACTLY the same! Though, the menu in the Manual had many more options than did the one on my computer. So, I go to Asus's website and download the latest official (not beta) driver. Then, I pop in the Asus CD that came with my mobo and tried to run "Asus Update". Every time I run this I get an error message: "Unable to create NT driver... Read more

The support page for that model indicates it came with Windows 8.1, which means it should also have UEFI BIOS.  Depending on the way the Ubuntu Live was added to the flash drive, it might not be done correctly.  See this page on Ubuntu and UEFI BIOS.  BTW: it needs to be a 64bit installhttps://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEFI

A friend of mine came to me with this problem. He has an American Megatrends motherboard and can't get it to boot past the Checking NV RAM.. part

here is what is on the screen when it freezes
American Megatrends
AMIBIOS
TYAN TSUNAMI AT V2.00.01 012520001800
Intel 440BX AGPset

P II, 400Mhz
Checking NVRam..

then down at the bottom of the screen it says
62-0101-00999-0010111-071595-440BX/GX-51830001-5

What we have done:
Switched PCI video card to another PCI slot
Disconnected everything but the floppy/cd/harddrive
Reseated the RAM, switched RAM slots, and tried different RAM modules with ones that are known to work.

He says 1 time it made it past checking NVRam (where it counts the RAM) and then froze when it first said hit del to enter BIOS.

Edit: He also remembered that when he first booted he had 3 RAM modules in and all it would say is American Megatrends with the logo and that was it, so he removed 2 and left 1 and thats where we are now.

2nd Edit: When I asked him what happens when he tries it with no RAM he says "nothing, it beeps".

Anyone have any ideas on what to try next? Could it just be that the motherboard is bad where the RAM fits?

A:Problems getting to POST on American Megatrends MOBO

Alright - I just recieved word that it now works. Which leads me to believe that even though it appeared we had the RAM set properly it wasn't.
Now it boots into Win98 and just gives the usual errors when you don't have proper drivers installed and such, I'm going to let him work on that on his own because I think he has a pretty good handle on getting that set straight.
(he pulled this PC together from scrap parts so even getting this thing to run is a plus for him)
I'll post back with any other motherboard related problems that might crop up.

hi folks. good day to you all. my name is max. i can install windows and manage basic troubleshooting related to software without any problems. a couple of months back i installed windows xp on my friends computer and it was working fine but a month after installation, when he booted the comp up, he would get the startup options msg (safe, normal and so on) instead of windows booting up normally. when he tried to boot it up in any mode, the windows xp loading logo would just appear and windows just kept restarting. i thought it might be a software problem ,so i made a fresh install of xp and it was working fine . but now once again the same problem seems to have occured. this screen pops up when he starts the comp. i have included the image he sent me (its a bit blurry but you can make out whats on it). i searched about it and as you can see in the image, the problem seems to be about CMOS settings. now, from what i have learned so far after researching about it is that its either the CMOS battery that has lost its charge, died, or maybe its just a CMOS (or bios? not sure) settings problem. can you guys please take a look at the image and tell me what exactly is wrong and what steps i would have to take to fix his problem? thank you in advance.

Here's the problem: When I start my computer, I'll get a black screen with a bunch of text with "American Megatrends" as the header. The screen is unusual, and on the bottom it says "CPU fan error!, press F1 to continue." If I simply press f1 and ignore it, my computer eventually shuts off, and restarting my computer doesn't get my display back, I have to reset my cmos.

Things that I've tried: Now, I had this problem before, and my computer doesn't have a cmos switch, so I had to take out the battery for a couple minutes, and that worked.
Today I woke up to have the same problem. Only this time, when I took out the battery and put it back, the problem persisted.
So I tried entering my system setup and set "CPU fan speed" to ignore, that still did nothing.

So I'm aggravated, annoyed and helpless. Any help would be appreciated.

I think there must be some sort of malware on my computer. It's been pretty slow to start up (despite limiting startup programs in the msconfig), and when starting up, before my desktop fully loads, it comes up with a message saying "Personalizing settings for C:\Program Files\Common Files\mscd.exe". Sometimes it will stick there and not finish starting up, other times it sits there for a couple of minutes, then starts up ok, but slowly. I also have had issues with browser history getting wiped out what seems like every few hours. The Google toolbar will keep track of forms info, but I'm getting logged out of every site, and the history is gone. SuperAntiSpyware had found numerous entries for unclassified svchost.exe, and has been blocking them, but more keep popping up, and with them, it seems, goes the browser history.
What can I do to fix this?

Hello, my computer has been really slow lately starting up and shutting down. I've tinkered a bit with the services, following the services guide at The Elder Geek's website. I've only shut down the services it recommends, or that I don't use on my computer.

Also, sometimes when I boot up, instead of going to the black screen with Windows and the scrollbar, it goes straight to a full black background with only the following:

"SiI 3132 SATALink BIOS Version 7.3.13
Copyright (C) 1997-2006 Silicon Image, Inc."

I've been trying to figure out just what's been causing this and can't really find much. I've considered flashing the BIOS, but I've never done that. My motherboard manufacturer's website recommends to do it only if I'm sure it will fix my problem, which I'm not.

I've tried cleaning the dust from the inside of the case with a can of air. Had some problems with my DVD drive reading slowly and that fixed it, so thought I'd try it on the rest as well.

According to Belarc Advisor, here are the specs on the pieces of hardware for my computer:

Operating System
Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 (build 2600)

Processor
2.67 gigahertz Intel Core 2 Duo
64 kilobyte primary memory cache
4096 kilobyte secondary memory cache

A:Slow startup/shutdown, and strange startup message

By that error it seems as if your hard drive is a SATA drive. Make sure the wires that go from the power supply and main board are securely in place. I had a similar problem with a 300gb drive and it ended up being that I was using a converter for the hard drives power and not the power cable that plugged directly in from the power supply. Make sure you power down your computer before tinkering around in it though, might even want to unplug it and let it sit for like 10secs first.

Whenever i start up my computer i get a command prompt pop up that says C;\ windows\system32\cmd.exe operation completed successfully, how do i get rid of this.

A:How do i remove startup command prompt message at startup

Hello Wilson, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Check your startup programs to see if one of them may be for this. If it doesn't stand out, you could temporarily disable a startup program and test to see if it stops or not. If not, then you could enable the startup program again if you like.

Hope this helps for now,

Hi,

Got the Amer. Greetings gift attachment. Windows XP is running very slowly. I've done several different scans, which usually indicate a trojan. But it's a different trojan each time, so obviously bad stuff is being reloaded every time I log on.

Thanks in advance!

I have a Gateway system running XP Pro SP3. I received an email purportedly from americangreetings.com. It said to open the attachment to see the greeting card. The attachment was a zip file name e-card.zip. I looked inside the zip file and stupidly managed to accidentally run the exe (named e-card.exe) which it contained.

I immediately started getting a bunch of error messages. I don't recall them precisely, it happened to fast. There were a number of "cancel, retry, continue messages" all of which I canceled. There also messages saying something about "no disk" or "no drive". Then I noticed that the "Norton Internet Security" icon had vanished from the tray. I tried to restart the computer at this point but it was taking forever so I eventually turned off the power. When I turned it back on it rebooted and everything seemed fine except that Norton had not started. I tried to start it manually and it wouldn't start.

I used the Norton removal tool, then downloaded and installed the latest version of "Norton Internet Security". It now starts at boot and everything seems fine, but I suspect that I'm still infected. Something certainly happened that shouldn't have and I don't want to just proceed as if everthing is okay. I'm posting a copy of my hijack this log. I also have a Mcafee Root Detective report which I can post if you think it would be useful. Thank you for your help.

A:American Greetings virus?

Norton has detected and claims to have resolved the [email protected] virus. It's described here: http://securityresponse.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2009-022520-1425-99&tabid=2

It describes more or less exactly what I've seen. That page lists a bunch of files which get deposited in various shared directories. I found those files in those directories on my machine, when I right click on one it vanishes, presumably it's deleted by Norton.

So it appears that things are under control, but I'm still concerned there may be other things that haven't been resolved.

Try going to the Control Panel then Clock Language and Region. There you will find an option to change date formats.

The cd is in great condiction so should I cleen my laptop disk place and then if that, how?

A:Distored i'm an american cd

Mmm - could do with a bit more explanation here. Do you mean the sound is "distorted" and not "distored" (no such word)?
if you meant to type "distorted", try cleaning the CD with purpose-made CD cleaner.
You can also buy a special CD that will clean the CD drive. Most good audio centres or computer stores will have them.
They have little bristles attached to them which are designed to clean dirt from the laser lens, but don't get carried away - only use it a couple of times a year as over-use can do more harm than good.

If other CDs play okay and only that one is distorted, then despite what you say it must be a bad CD.

My Wife is a 'die hard' American Idol fan - she will not miss a single show. When she is unable to watch one, she records it on the DVR and watches it the next evening. However...... she didn't set the DVR correctly this past Sunday ( !/22/12 ) and recorded the football game instead - now that made her 'double po'd' - LOL!!!!

So I've been trying to find a way to get a copy of that single episode. I started searching with the Idol site, then anything else I could think of, but to no avail. I just need to find a legal download, or purchase a DVD of that episode. Any ideas?

Thanks, Keith

Here ya go. They don't sell episodes. I found this through Blinkx so I knew it would be OK. Remember Google is your friend.

Also if its free that would be great.
Thank you.

Hi there,

I live in the UK, and I'm currently on holiday in the US. Everything is so much much cheaper over here, so I wanted to buy some stuff.

I have seen a good deal on a wireless keyboard and mouse. Will this work on my computer at home?
I realise some of the keys will be different, as American keyboards have a different lay-out..... but will it actually work with my UK PC?
Also will PC games and software I buy over here work on my UK PC?
What about USB memory sticks and such?

thanks.

Hi
I have just purchased an american board an abit av-20 once I changed the frequency of the front bus it lit up and all is fine.
The question being is the jumper system that prevents accidental bios flashing a gaurd against bios hacking. as this has happened to me twice in the past two months.
I bought the board from the local store so when they hack this bios I can just walk in and get a replacement. but to tell the truth it would be great if it did not happen but the walk to the local store is great exercise.
the hacked boards were an asus a7v8x-x and a gigagyte ga-7 dxr+
would the abit be efficient in this department or would that be beyond its capabilities.
any advice would be appreciated

Don't know if I am in the right spot but as the price of 7 is so expensive out here someone suggested that the US prices are at least half what we have to pay so does anyone know of some US outlets where I can get copies cheaper.

I have Googled to find some and gone down the OEM track only to be lost in interminable legal paper trails and am still not sure of what I can legally do with an OEM.

For those who are wondering I tidy up machines usually cleaning out the dust, replacing the thermal paste, replacing hard drives, CPU's, and RAM for friends and putting on 7 as the best alternative to what they have got. But as I see it an OEM cannot be used for that purpose.

Is it possible for me to buy the machine from them do it up and then resell it to them for just the cost of the parts??

A:Buying American

cant you install 7 for them ,then have them purchase a license from microsoft direct to activate it. i believe you get 30 days to activate a 7 install .
