Solved: Need Word 2003 help (unable to open multiple docs, no save changes prompt)

Q: Solved: Need Word 2003 help (unable to open multiple docs, no save changes prompt)

I have two problems with Word 2003.

First, regardless of any changes made to a document, when I close the application I do not get a prompt asking if I want to save the changes.

Second, I cannot open more than one document at a time. If I have a document open, and I try to open a second document, it flashes the second document on the screen briefly and then closes it, leaving me with my first document open. There are no windows minimized to the taskbar, and there are no documents (other than the first document I opened) listed in the Window menu of Word.

I have installed all updates and service packs (both for Office 2003 and for Windows XP), and I am not using any 3rd party add-ins. I even tried uninstalling all Office related applications and reinstalling. No dice.

This has been going on for quite some time now, and I cannot find ANY information that seems to relate. I am begging for help here, so anything is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

. o O (I was having the same problem with 2007, but I uninstalled it. I'll get 2003 working properly FIRST, then wrestle with 2007.)

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I use Word 2003 as I don't like Word 2010. Lately when I have tried to open an attached document from an email, Word opens, and its all greyed out. Can you tell me how to fix this please?

It also doesn't work with saved documents. They will open with 2010 if I am given the choice, but I prefer 2003. It has been working fine up till the last two days.

Hi Gang,

I have a new Vista Premium OS that opens everything fast including Word 2003.
I installed new HP Printer drivers (got on CD from HP) for Vista.
Now Word program and the docs open very slowly, like 2 minutes instead of a few seconds.

So I guessing it has to do with the new printer drivers and something they did to Word or share with Word like fonts?

Do I need to reinstall Word or drivers or correct registry or ?

This is a home system, no server or network so printer is local.

Any thoughts?

thanks.

Are the drivers for this printer available on the HP website? If so, try downloading and re-installing them from the website instead.

Hello Everyone,

I'd like to write a .bat file that will save and close all open Word documents, then quit Word or terminate the Word process.

How in the world would I do that? I'm a complete novice at .bat files!

Also, could the .bat file be triggered only after Word has been unused/idle for a specified time?

I look forward to your responses!

Jay

A:.bat file to save and close all open Words docs, then quit Word

Hi,

Killing the word process wouldn't be too difficult but that would be on a schedule rather than x amount of idle minutes.
I don't believe a .bat file would be able to save any open workbooks though.

Are you able to provide some background on why this is needed and maybe there is an alternate method?

Regards,
Jamie

everytime I try and save a new Word document from Word 2000, I get the following error:

This is not a valid file name.
Try one or more of the following:
* Check the path to make sure it was typed correctly.
* Select a file from the list of files and folders.
()

I know this is all bunk! I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling Office 2K but with no change.

I have to resort to using a batch file to make/save Word filenames.

Anyone else had this same problem?

Hello,

For the past few weeks I have been running into a problem with Microsoft Office 2003 on Windows XP Home..which is that everytime I open word, excel or any of the office application the reinstall winodw appears on the User Information screen with the option to enter user name, initials, organization, and the key section with all info listed there. When I click on the OK button the reinstall options appears than disappears.

The crazy thing is that the problem goes away when I restarted my laptop and than a few days later it appears again.

I have installed MS Office Home and Student 2007 on my Dell Inspiron 1720 running Vista Home Premium. Previously I used MS Works that came pre-installed any e-mail with a Word attachment just opened when I clicked it.
Now when I get e-mails with any Word attachments I am unable to open the attachments without first saving them to the desk top, then opening Word 2007, then opening the document from the Word 2007 menu.
Similarly with all my old documents I have to go through the same long winded procedure to open them
Is there a simple way to cure this??. I'm not a tech whizz but if the cure is simple I can give it a go

Hi socalhkc, welcome to TSG.

The default behavior in Word 2003 is to require ctrl+click to prevent you from accidentally going to links when you don't mean to, but you can disable it:

Click Tools.
Select Options.
In the Options dialog box, select the Edit tab.
Uncheck Use CTRL + Click to follow hyperlink.
Click OK.

Hope that helps.

Is there something special I need to do to ensure that I can use them on new computer, or is it hopeless?

A:Solved: Converting old Word Docs 97 to 2003

Not a problem. Microsoft exerts a lot of effort to make sure their newer applications are backwards compatible with files saved in older versions. So you should be safe

However, if you have any custom macros, they might not port as well. Sounds like that probably isn't the case, however.

Suddenly, all of my Open Office word processing documents converted into Microsoft Word documents. This literally happened overnight and I have no idea how it happened. The starter kit for Microsoft Office came already on my laptop but I never purchased any of the four programs in the suite. How can I convert them all back to Open Office docs without having to open them up in Word? (The Microsoft Office starter kit gives you something like 20 free "opens" for Microsoft Word but then you have to buy it.) Any help would be truly appreciated.

A:Solved: Open office files all turned into word docs! Help!

Hi Roy,

most likely what has happened is that Windows has somehow assigned ODT files to Word.

First, check whether the extensions of the files are still ODT. For this you need to switch off the option "Hide extensions for known file types" in the Folder Options of Windows Explorer (Tools, Folder Options, View). You can now see whether the files have a .ODT or a .DOC extension.

If they are still .ODT, do a right-click on one of them while holding the Shift key and choose "Open With...". Now you check the "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" box and locate "swriter" in the list above. If swriter is not there, you'll need to click on Browse and locate it on your hard disc, probably in C:\Program Files\OpenOffice.org\program\

After doing this, .ODT files will always be opened by OpenOffice.org, and the icon will also change accordingly.

If the file extensions are actually .DOC, and you don't use Office, you can use the same trick to assign .DOC files to OpenOffice. Then when you modify one of these .DOC files, don't just Save them, but use "Save As" to save them as .ODT files.

All this is assuming you use Windows XP... I don't know how assigning file types works in Vista...

I tried the Word batch conversion utility in the program but the docs came out garbled. This would save me a lot of time.

A:Need to batch convert Word perfect X4 docs to Word 2003

It is not the conversion that is the problem, you need to make sure that Word 2007 is set to Save As "Word 97-2003" documents to be the default.

Ahoy-hoy,

Trying to figure out a solution to this problem...

When working with Word documents that are fairly large (containing many pretty tables and graphs), I cannot save (it tells me to try closing other applications, even though I don't have any others running).

This happened the other day with a Word file that was approximately 40 MB.

Machine has 256 MB of RAM, 24GB free HD space, running Microsoft Office 2000....

I know that upgrading the amount of RAM might help solve the problem (go up to 512 or something), but before I do that, I was wondering if there were any settings that I could tweak or alter that might alleviate this problem?

I don't really like the idea of customizing the size of the paging file (rather leave it as Windows has set it).

Let me know if you have any thoughts/ideas.

Thanks

A:Solved: Unable to open My docs, Control panel Dr Watson

Recap: After doing a general clean-up the issue appears to be related to WINxp Sp2 being installed on an infected PC.
- Uninstalled SP2 - using http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=875350
[Used the Start / Run appwiz.cpl to get around not having access to the Control Panel directly]

- Cleaned up using the ususal tools, hoster, aboutbuster, cwshredder, spybots, adaware, killbox, deldomains, housecall online virus.
(note, If you don't know how to use these ask for help)

- Re-installed SP2
Now Working ok.

FYI, this is the second pc I've come across in the last few weeks where the symptoms are unable to access the my documents and or the control panel. In most cases the windows critical updates proposed the user upgrade to SP2... most just follow the instructions and don't ensure their systems is clean before doing the upgrade.

Hi,

A friend of mine has MS Word 2003 and though it always used to work, a couple of days ago, it simply began to refuse to save anything. She is typing something for school, and when she tried to save the document, the "save" dialog box disappears for a second, then pops back up.......nothing else can work, of course, so long as that box is there........she tries repeatedly to save it, but it will disappear and reappear immediately each time. The only way she can do anything is to remove the name in the "name" area and then just click on the "x" at the top right of the dialog box. At that point, everything she's typed disappears and the MS Word page is blank again.

I've never heard of such a thing, but I'm not real familiar with the Office products. Does anyone have any idea what is going on and how to fix this?

This may be a combo software/hardware question, but I'll put it in software.

Situation: I have a 30-page hard copy document that does not have an electronic, soft copy. I need to rework and edit this document but do not want to spend the time rekeying the entire document. I want to scan the document so I can then use Word to edit it. The document is all text although I may wish to put some photos (digital) in the reworked version using PhotoShop.

My system: Dell 8600, Word 2003. I do NOT have a scanner.

Questions: As I will be using an outside service to scan this document for me I would appreciate your sage wisdom about what I need to do when hiring someone to scan it for me. What software/hardware should they use so I can edit it using Word 2003? What expectation should I have for the quality of the scanned document? Should I expect to have to do a lot of clean up of words, etc, that may not scan properly? What other questions should I ask to ensure I get what I need?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give. I'm doing this for a non-profit who does not have an enormous budget so I don't want to waste money for something I can't use.

A:Scanning docs to edit with Word 2003

They should scan the document and run an OCR program over it.

That will produce a text file (which can be a Word document) that you can edit.

As for the accuracy, the software that comes with home scanners is variable, and very dependent on the font size and quality of the original. You really do nee to check the output as it will contain errors.

Commercial scanning programs tend to be more accurate but some are VERY expensive to buy.

I would expect about a 95% accuracy rate on a good clean document with a reasonable font size (10 points or above) on a home scanner/OCR and approaching 100% on a commercial one.

Formatting may or may not translate well, and often I just convert to plain text and reformat as I check.

A:Word won't prompt to save changes

Do Step 3 of troubleshooting word at:

www.TheOfficeExperts.com/word.htm

That should do it.

Oh...and run a virus scan with new data files because that sounds like an old macro virus. But the fix should still fix it.

I ADDED THEM FROM A DISK. Excel 2003 will not prompt to save the workbook when I either close the workbook or when I exit Excel. This happens with both new workbooks and edited existing workbooks. All patches and updates are installed as of 10/21.

OS: XP Pro SP2
Office Professional 2003 with all updates
Troubleshooting tried so far:
1. removed all add-ins
2. started in Safe Mode
3. searched and posted on Excel newsgroups for 6 weeks
4. XLSTART is empty
5. reinstalled the entire Office suite with all components installed now, not on first use
6. reinstalled again

This is really driving me crazy. My last resort if I can't find anything else to try will be to write a macro tied to before close and before exit events. I would rather not do that, though. Please help!

I'll try to make this as concise as I can:Problems/steps taken:- Running Windows XP SP 2/Office Pro 2003.- User noticed problem this morning; some corporate patches or updates may have been applied since yesterday (not sure).- Initially couldn't open Excel files by any method. Excel would hang and the task would have to be ended.- Used Add/Remove Programs on Office 2003 and chose Repair. Didn't notice a change. Then did Change on Office components and unchecked Excel to remove it. Later re-checked Excel to put it back on.- Noticed that I could now open Excel files by double-clicking on them or opening from recent Excel files list. File | Open or toolbar Open button still make Excel hang.- Also noticed that Save As command from the file menu (or the toolbar, if you add a toolbar Save As button) also makes Excel hang.Notes:- There are no files in XLSTART under the Office11 folder or the user's profile. There are no .xlb (customized toolbar) files on the system. There are also no Add-ins running and never were.- Running Filemon.exe (from Sysinternals.com) shows that several files are not found as Excel tries to Open or Save As, but I'm not sure I see any unfound files that should make any difference. It keeps looking for shell32.dll repeatedly after it's already been found in C:\Windows\system32, where the file does reside.--------SOLUTION (my boss found this, and it worked):This was caused by a recent Microsoft patch. There were apparently also about 40 insta... Read more

I'm using Word 2003. There are MANY Word docs that one of my Supervisors has asked me to password protect. Is there any way to do several at a time? This is taking forever. We don't need the password to open only to modify. It seems people are making changes without telling anyone.

Thanks in advance for your time.

A:Password protect multiple Word docs at once?

Some possible options:

1. Convert all the documents to PDFs while you retain the originals. PDFs can't be easily modified

2. Rather than password protect each document, place them in a folder and password protect the folder.

See:

http://www.axantum.com/AxCrypt/

or

http://www.wincry.com/

or

http://www.winability.com/folderguard/

3. Zip (compress all the files and password protect the zip file). This will slow things a bit as the files decompress each time.

There are others as well - a Google search should help.

When i create and save a word document(.doc) and if I reopen it from windows explorer or from the start menu and then documents. They will reopen in Word pad. Then the format is all screwed up. In order for me to open it, I 1st have to start Word, then go to "File" then "Open" Even though the documents are saved as .doc . the seem to have the word pad logo or icon beside the file name. Only the backup copy of the document automaticly made by word show the Word Logo or icon beside the file name and extention.

How do change it to open only in Word.

windows 98 and word2000

Thanks
Crawford

A:Saved Word Docs open in Word Pad

In Explorer, navigate to a .doc file, and right click (you may need to hold Shift when you right click)

Select Open With

Select Word as the program to open with, and also select "always use this program..."

Its only your file association that needs renewing.

I have a one year old Toshiba Touch Screen, running Windows 7 and Microsoft Office Pro 2003. I am protected by AVG Premium Security: anti virus, link scanner, email protection, firewall, identity alert/protection.
Suddenly all the custom Word templates that I have created have become corrupted with the date being displayed as { DATE \@ "dddd, dd MMMM yyyy" }. Even when I attempt to insert a date in a new, blank (non custom created) document, it is displayed similarly.
The email address area displays an historic email address that is no longer in existence and is prefaced { HYPERKLINK mailto: ...............}
I have no idea why this corruption has occurred and wonder whether I should reinstall the Office Pro 2003 software; might this solve the problem?
In any event, I would like to know why such a corruption should suddenly occur and what might have caused it - might it happen again? I have never experienced this type of error in almost a quarter of a century using stand alone computers.

I would add that I created this question in a Word document and when I cut and pasted it into this message, the date and email addresses were correctly formatted, although I had typed them in their 'program style form' as above, so I am even more confused and bemused!

I shall be really grateful for any help.

I downloaded the new version of IE 6.0 and started having immediate problems. I did an uninstall but it seems that didn't correct anything.

Here's some of my problems:

1. Won't store pictures to a file from a disk.
2. Won't open more than one browser.
3. Some Links don't open.

I have Windows 98SE.

I previously went through and got rid of a bunch of stuff...do you think I deleted something that I needed to do this things?

Hope you can help me!

Thanks.

Hi Guys - I'm new to this site and not very tech savvy or sure of which forum topic to post this under. If I'm not posting under the right topic please let me know which topic thread would be more suitable.

I run Word 2007 on Windows 7. I recently had a virus hide all my documents and programs - the virus has been removed but it has changed things around.

I cannot open the word documents I have stored in My Docs. All the icons next to the name of the word files are showing up as a little orange page - when I click on the file name, a Microsoft Office 2010 window comes up which says "The Microsoft Office Product needed to open this file is not installed on your computer". And then it has the invitation to purchase Office 2010.
Does anyone know what's going on here with this and know how I can rectify this & change this back somehow so I can open & read these docs in Word 2007 again?

I can open Word 2007 and make a new document and save it but if I go to open it again it has been converted into this other file with the orange page icon and I cannot open it.

(I can open & save in wordpad - the wordpad doc can be saved in My Docs and it will reopen so I can read it again. Also my music, picture and video files all open ok.)
Running:
HP dv6 Notebook Pc
Intel - i7 - 2630QM CPU @ 2.00Ghz
8GB ram - 64 bit operating system
Windows 7 Home Premium

thanks so much

Hey all,So When opening any word document either from within word 2007, or from directly selecting the document, two documents open. The second document is the same as the first but there are definate issues when trying to edit the second one. The second document also does not have a title to be found. unable to close the second document until the first one is closed. It sortive reminds me of an OLE issue but I have no idea on how to fix this. I tried a uninstall and reinstall of Office. Of course I tried looking through the menus and such but not sure where to navigate on this, I maybe over looking something. Maybe I am not using the correct search termanology since I am not finding anything on it. Anyone out there have a clue or better yet an awnser on how to stop the second window from showing?ThanksBleepingNetwork

Using MS office word 2003 on INspiron 300m running XP home. This just started today. I cannot open any of my word documents. When i attempt to open a document, a message appears in the bottom left "running virus scan" for about 15-20 seconds then disappears and the file does not open. This happens with all word docs, not just ones created today. Also the files on the flash drive react the same way.

Which anti-virus do you have installed? Sounds like you'll need to disable your antivirus' Office plug in.

You may also be able to resolve by reinstalling the antivirus completely.

I have a bunch of word documents, that won't open up. When I try to open them up an error message saying "Word cannot open document: user does not have acess priviledges" pops up. I save anything in the file in which they are located that new document, in turn, becomes the same as the rest. Gotta bunch of files I'd really like to open but can't.

A:Can't open word docs.

What folder are you storing these documents?

You have MS Word installed? If so, uninstall it...then reinstall it. Then apply any critical updates from Microsoft Update.

I'm running MS Office 2003. When I try to open a file I get the message ""The file____is not available."
Click OK & try to close MS Office Word.
Get message "The file NORMAL already exists"
"Do you want to replace the existing file"
Have to hit yes to exit.
Then it saves to a template file "Normal" rather than as a doc and it still cannot be opened.
OR:

Trying to open a downloaded file from the internet: Word or Excel
I get a message that the file is either infected with a virus or the computer anti virus software needs to be updated.
I unistalled Norton when I first started getting the message and did not reinstall. I am now running AVG.

Ran a scan and AVG found 1 virus. C:\documents and settings\application\date\sun\java\deployment\cache\javapi\v1.0\jar-47723671-73f0dc26.zip move object

When I try to open Doc or RTF files from my CD, all I get are strange looking symbols. I tried the CD on another machine and it did the same thing. I had these files backed up on one other CD, but I get the same result when I try and open them. The PDF files on the CD do seem to be working; just not the DOC or RTF.
