Win7 Firewall won't turn on error code 0x6D9 and error code 0x80070424

Q: Win7 Firewall won't turn on error code 0x6D9 and error code 0x80070424

Ok - I'm trying to fix my friends' computer - Toshiba Satellite L455-S5975 running Windows 7 32-bit

Windows firewall is off and I need to "Update Firewall Settings". When I click use recommended settings, I get a message that says it "can't change some of your settings. Error code 0x80070424" I get the same thing when I click on "Turn Windows Firewall on or off" and "Restore Defaults"

When I click on "Advanced Settings" I get "There was an error opening the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security snap-in" followed by it "failed to load. Restart the Windows Firewall service on the computer you are managing. Error code 0x6D9."

I scanned the computer using both Avast and Microsoft Safety Scanner (full scan and took over 2 hours) - no infections or issues found

I installed all Microsoft updates and followed suggested restarts.

I ran Microsoft Fix It and I get a message that the firewall isn't running or stopped and it can't be fixed.

I have gone into services as an administrator to try and start Windows Firewall...it isn't there - not in the list of services (local)

I also used SlimDrivers to update all the drivers on the computer.

What I am not seeing is how to uninstall and reinstall Windows Firewall...any other program or hardware issue, that would seem to be the easiest solution - but I have yet to see how to do that with Windows Firewall.

I even started the computer in safe mode and chose "Repair computer" only to get a message that there is nothing to repair.

If I can't get the firewall back to "ON" is running Avast or AVG enough to keep the computer safe? Apparently infected applets were installed through Java.

Thanks for any help you have...

PS - I'm not very computer savvy, but I am very good at internet research and following directions.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hello!

I just did a fresh clean install of Windows 10. I was just installing all my programs back and then suddenly I get an error saying Windows Firewall is not working. In detail it says;

The Windows Firewall with Advanced Security snap-in failed to load. Restart the Windows Firewall service on the computer that you are managing. Error code: 0x6D9.

My options are to use "recommended settings" but it does not work.

Everything that I have search on the internet gives me solutions to other previous versions of windows and nothing on this error with Windows 10!

I have not installed any additional virus software, i'm just using whatever windows 10 provides me.

Please help, I don't want to have to do yet another clean install!

Thank you

Hello,

I have a problem that other users have already described here (and been able to remedy with assistance):  the Windows Firewall on my laptop does not work any more -- I cannot configure it through the control panel, and when I try to open it, it shows the message:

"The Windows Firewall with Advanced Security snap-in failed to load. Restart the Windows Firewall service on the computer that you are managing [obviously, that is not possible].  Error code: 0x6D9."

My operating system is Windows 7, 64bit version.  All recent Windows updates are installed.  I have Malwarebytes installed and ran a scan recently, with no results except for one tracking cookie.  I also have Sophos Antivirus installed, which also did not find anything when I ran a scan.

Perhaps somebody could be so generous and tell me what I could do about this?

Cheers,
Daniel

It was only until today did I bother /have a need to access my windows firewall settings. Upon opening Windows firewall with Advanced Security window I am met with a:

There was an error opening the Windows Firewall with Adv security snap in  /  the snap in failed to load.

I ran a few quick scans with Malwarebytes Anti malware but those were all PUP files (still had them removed, then restart but same issue)
since I only checked today I can't tell how long this has been an issue.

am I infected? should I restore my computer to a early point before some of the windows security updates?

I'm so surprised.

A:Trouble accessing Windows Firewall Error Code: 0x6D9

Hello, I highly doubt you are infected. Windows Firewall is causing the issue, to solve this problem I recommend downloading Windows Repair and following my steps.

Step 1. Install the program

Step 2. Drain all the power in your computer by unplugging all cords and taking out the battery. After that keep pressing the power button a few times like you are turning it on to drain the power left in your computer.

Step 3. Put the battery back in and the power cord (if you need one) and turn on your computer.

Step 4. Run Windows Repair and select the Step 5 tab (Backup). Next press backup under Registry Backup. You may want to create a restore point too, which is next to it.

Step 5. Go onto the Repair tab and click Open Repairs and make sure you have Registry Permissions, File Permissions, WMI and Windows Firewall checked. When ready click Start Repairs and wait until it has finished.

Step 6. When it has finished copy the log in the Log tab and post it onto this topic.

Step 7. Wait for me to reply

Thanks Aramus

Hey All:

Sorry if this is in the wrong place or if I give insufficient info... I'll try to be as descriptive as possible...

My wife got a virus today on our desktop computer. We are running Wondows 7 Professional. She ran the AVG scan and it found the following and placed it in the vault: Win32.Tepfer.kp

She then could not get her printer to work. I was trying to get the printer up and running and noticed that it was not shared on our network. When I tried to share it, I got an error code 0x000006d9. When I googled this it led me to try and get my windows firewall fixed. When I tried to enable the Firewall, I kept getting the following error code "0x80070424 windows cannot change some of your settings". I then googled this and I tried to follow the instructions on several sites, which told me to look in "services" from the Run menu. When I went to the services folder, Windows Firewall was not in the list for me to right click and perform some operations. I am at a complete loss as to where to turn next.... Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry if this is confusing....

MJ

I recently received the Windows 2012 security virus that hijacks your computer and refuses you to open programs. I've attempted to remove this by first using malware bytes and a fix registry that I've located within your forums (FixNCR). The first time I did this it seemed to clear up - but it returned. I followed the same process with a false sense of success and recently had the virus pop up again. I tried another process of running ComboFix (I did this before reading all of the forum rules) on newly created Windows user account. While attempting this, ComboFix noticed I had an active scanner of ESET NOD 32 - this AV software used to be installed on my computer, but when attempting to update the license I was unable to reinstall. Using ESET's very own software removal I thought I took it off my computer, and can still find no trace of it. I installed Avast (uninstalled shortly after) and am currently using AVG. ComboFix still ran even though it said that ESET was running. I have a log which I can post from this if you wish to see it. After ComboFix, and still in safe mode, I ran Malware bytes and SUPERAntiSpyware Free. I then ran CCleaner to attempt to fix all registry issues. While booting up again on my main Windows 7(64bit) user account I went to check out my Windows Firewall and received the Error Code 0x80070424.

Whats up

I am new to this forum I signed up to see if anyone could help me troubleshoot this problem I have with the firewall settings.
One of my family member's laptop has been infected with the fake antivirus called Win 7 antivirus 2012 and I followed a Tut. I found online
to get rid of it. I was finally able to stop it from executing and had appeared to have taken it off with rogue killer and malwarebytes.
But I still have a problem with the firewall, I used the firewall settings through McAfee but every time i turn it on it turns off within seconds.
I tried to turn it on in Windows Firewall settings but it gives me an error code 0x80070424. I even went into the services to see if i could some how enable it there
but i don't even see the service I believe it has been deleted by some kind of Trojan, I don't know I'd appreciate the help please.

The error from the MMC means that there's no RPC endpoint available for it to talk to, and the error from the security center is "ERROR_SERVICE_DOES_NOT_EXIST". So, do you know when this first started happening? Is anything else happening on the system or in the event logs that might indicate a larger problem?

Hi there

I've been experiencing some weird problems where a 'System64' folder has been created in my Windows folder, when I am running Windows 7 64-Bit, I am led to believe that there should be no folder called 'System64' - instead there's just system32 & SysWOW64 (am I correct in that?)

Anyway, other than that, the other reason I think I have some gremlin in my system is because the Windows Firewall service refuses to run, it comes up with the Error Code 0x80070424

Would appreciate if you could provide any help you can with this, I am in the process of running a scan with aswMBR and will post the log results if it finds anything (will a quick scan be sufficient?)

I have updated my PC specs on my profile.

Kind Regards

Hello, and thanks to everyone who helps on this forum. I am unable to start Windows Firewall in Windows 7. When I try to update the firewall settings, it gives me the error code 0x80070424. I tried the Microsoft "fix it" solution to no avail. In Services, I do not have Windows Firewall, Windows Event Controller, or Base Filtering Engine listed. I did get infected many months ago with the Win 7 Antivirus 2011 (or one of the variances) and "sucessfully" removed it with Malwarebytes. There are no other outward problems other than not being able to start the firewall. I'm not sure how long it has been this way because I have not noticed anything else abnormal going on but when I tried to access my firewall yesterday it said it was not set to the recommended settings. When I attempted to open it to fix this I got Error Code 0x80070424 with the message "Windows Firewall can't change some of your settings". I ran several Malware and anti-virus scans and my system now comes up clean but this is still the case. I looked on several forums for other people having the same problem and tried a few things that fixed it for them but nothing happened on my end. I saw there were a few topics started here regarding the same issue but I didn't want to start editing my registry on my own without some guidance. Thanks...

Originally I wanted to turn my Windows firewall off because I heard I can get a better online experience when playing a game, but when I go "turn Windows Firewall on or off" in the Control Panel, it tells me "Windows is not using recommended settings to protect your computer", so I click on " use recommended settings" and that is when I get the error message:

Windows Firewall can't change some of your settings. Error code 0x80070424

Any help on fixing this error would be greatly appreciated

Hello. I am experiencing trouble with my HP Windows 7 64Bit laptop. I noticed some changes back in December but thought it was because I received a new modem/router from ATT. I am always being redirected when I click on a link or have adware pop up. I use Google Chrome and installed an AdBlocker but it doesn't help. Also, I run spybot and CCleaner each week and SuperAntispyware and Uniblue registry booster everyday. When I click on Window Firewall, I get the following message: Windows Firewall can't change some of your settings error code 0x80070424I ran the Fix it tools, but it sent me to an online forum for more help. A:Can not turn on firewall, error 0x6d9

GianniR,

Let's try to find the cause...

Please use the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool
Download: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/farbar-recovery-scan-tool/
Select the version that applies to your system.
Save it to your Desktop.

Double-click the downloaded file to run it.
When the tool opens click Yes to the disclaimer.

Press the Scan button.

The tool makes a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory from which the tool is run (Desktop).
Please provide the FRST.txt in your reply.

The first time the tool is run, it also makes another log: Addition.txt
Also post the Addition.txt in your reply.

Next, download the Farbar Service Scanner

Save to the Desktop Make sure the following options are checked:Internet Services
Windows Firewall
System Restore
Security Center
Windows Update
Windows Defender

Press: Scan
FSS creates a log, FSS.txt, on the Desktop.
Please provide the FSS.txt in your reply

A:0x6D9 error code

The 0x6D9 error indicates you've got some services that the firewall needs to have running that aren't running.
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-security/unable-to-turn-on-windows-firewall-error-code/03c682a0-1ed1-482b-9324-bfd572fa7036

The 0x8007040424 error may also indicate that certain services that are needed aren't running, but it could also indicate your system is infected.
Try running the fixit tool first: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/968002

I discovered this problem when trying to use the firewall in Avast Premier.  I do not remember when I had a virus, but I did some time ago, and I thought I had cleaned up -- but now I realized my firewall would not start.  I received the error code 0x80070424.  I spent two weekends trying to fix this.  I got as far as realizing that some of my services (BFE and Windows Firewall) would not start.  I googled all over the place and found little to help, but did find suggestions to fix the registry.  None that I tried worked.  On the third weekend, I found BleepingComputer's site, and downloaded Windows Repair (All in One).  It suggested a clean boot, and gave instructions.  It also recommended using MalwareBytes Anti-Malware first, which I had already downloded and run, but ran again with no issues found.  Then I followed the easy instructions for Windows Repair (All in One.)  I unchecked the items for Windows 8, since I am on 7, but basically used the defaults.  My problem is solved!!  This was wonderful, and I wanted to recommend it if you are finding error code 0x80070424.and there are problems starting the Windows Firewall service.  Yay!!  I'm happy now and thought I should share with others that may be having this issue.  I am not technically savvy enough to have tackled fixing the registry by myself.  I have had no issues since I ran this application.

Hello.
I hope am posting in the right forum.
Two days ago I received a warning telling me that system had been hijacked by the "Trojan-BNK.Win32.keylogger.gen" and to pay $65 for "them" to release it. After many failures because it didn't allow me to open any programs or browset the net, I finally had to used "My Recovery" to wipe out the C drive and reinstall everything from the D drive into the C drive. I don't see signs of this trojan anymore, however, when I tried to activate Windows Defender or Windows Firewall I get: "The specified service doesn't exist as an installed service (Error code:0x80070424). Don't know what to do now.
My system is a Fujitsu Lifebook AH531, i5 processor, running Windows 7. I used the free AV version of Avast and have also ran Ccleaner.
Thanks.

Once I had s.m.a.r.t HDD virus. I downloaded and ran Rkill and Malware bytes, but it did not help. I then deleted two files with some odlloking_random_number.exe by searching for files downloaded on that day. I then followed some instructions on a website(Unfortunately I forgot the site or the instructions).. The s.m.a.r.t HDD problem disappeared. I tried various on-line virus scanners and they all reported no viruses.

But I noticed Windows security essentials was turned off, so I tried to turn it on. I forgot what happenned but I could not turn it on. So I uninstalled and reinstalled MSE. It installed, updated database and then started to scan. But I got a message that windows encountered a critical error and the system will reboot. This kept happenning howmany ever times I try to uninstall, do some other virus check and re-install MSE.
