very slow PC (slow start-up and shutdown) need to click shutdown twice

Q: very slow PC (slow start-up and shutdown) need to click shutdown twice

Hello!

My PC has gotten very very slow (esp. during start-up and shutdown). What's weird is that i always needed to click the shutdown and turn-off button twice for it to start shutting down. The first instance that i click turn-off, it does nothing. And during shutdown, there's always this end program box for explorer.exe.

Pls pls help! Thank you very much! i hope it won't take too much of your time. Im really really counting on your help. Thanks in advance! God bless! :)

Preferred Solution: very slow PC (slow start-up and shutdown) need to click shutdown twice

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hello All,

I have a ASUS Laptop with Intel I3 processer and Windows 7 Home Premium. I recently had a forced shutdown during a Windows upgrade session. Ever since then the Boot and Shutdown times have increased to over 15 minutes. I have run the msconfig unticking all but the antivirus (Kaspersky) and it still takes >15 min to boot and Shutdown. Is there something I can do before I decide to reinstall Windows &. (I dont have a install disk.) The software came with the Computer and I have the OEM code (Bought at Best Buy)

Thanks in advance.

A:SLOW Boot and Shutdown after forced Shutdown during Windows 7 Upgrade

Yeah. I have been using the Software performance toolkit from windows. Basicly if you know about windows xp, xp had a program called bootvis that rearranged the bootfiles and such for faster boot times, and bootvis is in windows 7, but you need another program to try to use it (i believe).

Hi all,

I've downloaded the Windows SDK to create an trace file to pinpoint what is holding up my laptop shutdown.

Unfortunately I'm having trouble reading the results so would appreciate anyone whom has experience with the software help me identify what is holding up shutdown.

Shutdown now takes 30secs on an i7 sony laptop ssd 8gb ram, it use to take only around 5 seconds.
It would seem there is only activity at the start and end of the shutdown process and a dead spot with little cpu activity for about 20 seconds.

Only thing I can see is the process lifetime seems to be extended for a handful of processes.

The file is HUGE so i'll just upload some screenshots of the results.
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.
dodo.

Recently my laptop has been experiencing substandard performance. It takes longer than it used to when starting up the computer (Windows XP logo on a black background with the loading bar at the bottom). It also takes very long when logging in to my username (stops at the screen when it says "loading your personal settings" after filling in the password and proceeding to load the desktop). It takes about 15-20 minutes just to get everything running and that I'm able to do a thing without delays. When shutting down, it also takes longer then it used to before the computer turns off. When running Firefox, sometimes it doesn't start up and a window that has something to do with scripts pops up. Choosing "Yes" on the question "Do you want to continue using this script anyway?" will start Firefox and choosing "No" closes the window and running Firefox again works as well. Running Internet Explorer 8 takes a really long time to load pages (which isn't the case before) so I don't even use it at the moment. When I look at the processes of my task manager the system idle process (system), which is only taking up 28K memory usage, has the CPU value oscillating in the mid to high 90s. In the processes tab, CPU usage is around 90-100% most of the time. Consequently, other programs that I use often such as VLC for viewing videos and various games have deteriorated in function slightly as well. Still, after a while, these programs becom... Read more

Hello,

I would be grateful to anyone who can help with this problem.

Recently I have noticed that upon starting up my computer I get a message stating that the computer had not been shut down properly the last time it was on, and asking whether I want to enter safe mode.

Upon opting to start up as normal, both the process of getting into windows and shutting down is extremely slow, also if I click to enter my computer, this is also extremely slow and the search light animation continues for over 10 minutes.

I have gone through start up manager and removed anything which might be causing a slow down. Often when turning the computer off it hangs for a very long time and needs to be switched off manually.

I use norton internet security and firewall and so hopefully this is not a virus.

Nothing has particularly changed recently to bring on this slowdown.

Grateful if anyone can help with this.

A:Extremely slow shutdown/start up and my computer

1) Please boot to the recovery console and run chkdsk /r

2) Please run full system scans with BOTH your installed anti virus app and with MalwareBytes

Let's see where we are after that.

I was trial testing the latest version of SD (with default settings) on my MS SP4 tablet with Win 10 Pro 64-bit and FCU installed. Nothing on SD exclusion list

The security software I have include

1) Webroot SecureAnywhere AV (WSA AV) - The reason I chose this is because it's sig-less and offers online/offline real-time protection
2) SuperAntiSpware Pro - As a small complement to WSA AV for real-time online/offline protection. I have the paid version so might as well use it.
3) FortKnox Personal Firewall
4) AdGuard for Desktop
5) Running ProtonVPN

I disabled Windows Defender and the default Windows Firewall

Before installing SD my system can boot up/shut down fast and running other software without issues

After installing SD shut down takes a loooooooooooong time and many times I need to hard reset to shut it down. Start up also has problem and I need to access the boot up screen before it can properly start up. Sometimes Chrome browser cannot open despite it running in Task Manager. MCShied seems to clash with SD and I need to uninstall the former to avoid this issue. I usually 'Exit SD on shut down'. Once I tried 'Start SD on Boot' and my system took a long time to start up.

After uninstalling SD my system is now back to normal without the mentioned issues

I read from the net that using virtualization software can cause long shut down and start up issues

Anyone faced these issues?

Thanks

A:Problems with slow start up & shutdown & heaps of events

Can you check something for me.

Click start
In the search box type "services.msc" (no quotes).
See if you have 2 services that start with "cyberlink"

If you do. Right click the service and go to properties, and change the setting from automatic to automatic (delayed start) on both of them.

Reboot

Let me know if that fixes it. I've had that issue with ALOT of HP laptops and desktops.

I turned the computer on today and received a "malware detected" message from Avast antivirus. I tried to move to chest/delete and the message kept popping up. I looked up NewDot malware on the internet (which is what Avast was detecting) and it said that NewDot prevents access to the internet, which seemed about right as i was having to use my laptop to access the internet as the time, because the other computer wasn't working properly. It said that i could get rid of it easily my going to Add/remove programs and uninstalling it, which i did.

After this i restarted the computer and the loading time was exceptionally slow, i thought it had frozen, but it was just taking 5-10minutes to load. When it finally did load i tried to access the internet through a number of different browsers, but none of them would load. I tried to open some other applications too, and they wouldn't load either. I went to msconfig and disabled the majority of my startup items, and then restarted the computer. Once again the loading time was slow, and no applications would start. I then tried to do a defrag, but the program didn't work. Then i tried system restore, and the application didn't load, i came back to the computer 5-10minutes later and it had loaded, but it came up with an error that said something along the lines of "system restore is unable to protect your computer, please restar... I don't know if there's an edit option on this site, but i couldnt find it.

Anyway, i've found a website dedicated to this newdot "foistware" as it is known: http://www.cexx.org/newnet.htm

It says that deleting the .dll will result in a broken internet connection. IT also mentions that sometimes uninstalling it will still leave errors in winsock.
This seems to be what has happened to me, so i'm going to try the LSP fix utility available for download on that site. The problem is that this laptop has no floppy disk drive, and i don't have a UBS storage device available.

I was just wondering, if and when i do repair the LSP problems, could that be what is causing my system to run slowly? I hope so.

Thanks again.

Hi there. I'm first going to post my Computer specs before I go into what's happening.

AMD Athlon 64x2 Dual Core 2.0ghz
3Gb of RAM
160gb SATA Seagate HDD
80gb IDE HDD
nVida 7300GT 256mb Graphics card
Tv Tuner Plus TV Card
BioStar Tseries TF7025-M2
A completely clear Plexi glass case
450w PSU
Fan controller with sound activated 2 blue flashing lights(these are barely on)
2 UV Lights and one other ripple effect one(also barely on)
3 case fans all with multicolored LED's
LED's placed within the case(it's hard to explain)
1 wire that like lights up green through out the case.

Ok, so here's my problem. My computer use to and still is(not as much for some reason unknown reason)just switches off completely, no Windows is logging off or anything. Sometimes when I put my computer into Hibernate, I get a BSOD and when I switch my computer off or on it takes awhile to get into Windows(I think that's because of Panda Internet security, kills system resources) Also, XP freezes..I can do everything with the keyboard like get to Task Manager but basically the whole desktop freezes.

I'm not sure when it started to do all this, and I doubt it's a Virus or any other malicious content. It's just even with 3gbs of RAM, XP seems slow, I can feel how and when my computer is going fast from when I upgraded my RAM from 2-3gb but I'm not feeling it because of the hanging.

So I was thinking, maybe my PC isn't getting enough power from my... Read more

Hi:

I've got a Dell Latitude C400 1.33 running Win XP Pro sp3. The computer has been running fine. The other day as I started up the computer, a blue screen came on saying the computer needed to run chkdsk. As it ran, I noticed it was removing a bunch of what looked like system type files and some exe's. It finished and the computer started up. Since then, the computer has had startup problems: once, it didn't recognize my firewall (it said it couldn't start it) so I removed the firewall and reinstalled. Firewall starts now. Overall, the startup is slower than previously, and most things are much slower.

More importantly, it is very difficult to shutdown and powerdown the computer. It take a few minutes (if ever) for the computer to shutdown (get to the part that asks if I want to restart etc.), and a few or more minutes for it to powerdown after that, if at all. I've had to push the power buttom a few times as well.

I've run a ton of virus and malware including: avira antivirus (running all the time), kaspersky internet suite 2009 (on demand), Spybot, Rogue Remover, Super Antispyware, and Malaware Anti-Malware. Nothing found.

I then tried to run the Recovery Console at startup (which I installed with this forum's help--I don't have the XP disks anymore, to figure out a previous problem, but never actually ran it before). As the Recovery Console started up, I got the following error message: "The file Sym_U3.sys could not be fo... Read more

I noticed slow startup shutdown speeds a month or two ago, and have been trying to fix the problem by using all the usual scanning and detecting software. Some of my programs are slow to launch after a reboot for some reason, after I launch them the first time they lag but when I launch them a second time they pop right up, except for MSconfig which takes about 25 seconds to launch, can't figure that one out. Was having problems with my IE 10 crashing and restarting, and my ISP kept sending me e-mails about illegally downloading copyrighted material, didn't see any unauthorized wireless activity on my Gateway, so I might have had a backdoor problem or something like that. So I finally ran combofix and it took care of a lot of my problems. So far some other programs launch the way they're supposed to, no IE 10 crashing and restarting it, and no more e-mails from my ISP. But I still have slow startup shutdown speeds, and some programs slow to launch, same lag time on MSconfig. I've ran the scanners y'all usually have people run, so I can attach or paste those logs if you would like.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Hi -

I have been running Win7x64 for a few years now, and I have an insanely annoying problem during Windows shutdown or Windows startup.

I am running my OS and most of my programs on an SSD drive, which generally performs very nicely. I have a few monster-sized apps on traditional drives, like VMWare workstation, and a few games. Everything seems to run pretty zippy, once Windows has booted.

However, I will randomly see a slow Windows shutdown that takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes - measured - to successfully power down. (I never force a shut-down or restart unless the system takes longer than 1/2 hour to shut down, and there is almost no hard-drive activity). During the 15-20 minute shutdown, there is nearly constant hard drive activity.

Additionally, I will see random times when Windows seems to hang during the startup process. Normally, my startup processes will take about 50 - 55 seconds to start. Occasionally, I will see the startup time take as long as 6 - 7 minutes. There isn't significantly higher hard drive activity while this is happening.

It drives me crazy.

The startup / shutdown issues may be related, or may not be related at all.

Scans with Live CD versions of Kaspersky and Avira have shown no malware activity.

Does anybody know what is going on? Or, does anybody have suggestions on how to isolate the problem(s)?

Thanks!

AzJazz

I'm not sure if this should go in the Antivirus Program as it seems that my problems occured after installing Kaspersky Anti-virus 7.0.

My Zonealarm Security Suite subscription was ending. I decided to completely uninstall this and go with separate Anti-virus & firewall.

I installed the trial version of Kaspersky AV 7, rebooted and configured. Then, I went with Zonealarm Pro. I installed and rebooted.

1st thing - on reboot it took almost 15 minutes for my desktop and all icons to completely load. This only occured one time, so I suspect Kaspersky was doing some scanning or caching something.

Since then, bootup has been normal....about 30 - 45 seconds from logon for all processes and services to load.

However, I've noticed 2 things in particular:

1) When I open up certain applications, they don't open right away. It sometimes takes 2 or more minutes to open up. During this delay the hour glass shows, then stops. Hard drive goes quiet. Then, the program finally opens up.
Not all applications do this, and it's not always the same ones after each boot. Sometimes all of them open right away, sometimes none.

2) When trying to shutdown the computer, there is also a significant delay. After 2 or 3 minutes, the shutdown procedure begins, the desktop fades and says: "Logging off". It stays here for a while (anywhere from 2 to 5 minutes, or longer). Again, the hard drive is quiet. Then the hard drive churns and it goes to saying: "Shutting down&q... Read more

Hi. Any help appreciated. I have a sluggish computer - alt tabbing is slow, i seem to have regular odd spots of caching my typing and dropped letters. i've done Malwarebytes, Spybot, Avast full scan, Defrag, diskcleanup, sufficient swapspace to 50G. I am confused though about what to get rid of when I look at HijackThis, services.msc, Sysinternals autoruns and process explorer. And I suspect that the fact that my computer is so slow shutting down could have something to do with this. Am wondering if my FF browser itself has issues and am thinking about a reinstall of that. At windows Serivce Pack 3 - has this caused issues? Please let me know if you see anything glaringly obviously bad... (and I've just found the guide for how to make FF run faster... bookmarked for further perusal..)

Hi, for some reason XP seems to take ages to shut down or restart. After clicking either, the computer just seems to sit doing nothing for about a minute before then shutting down. I have checked a couple of things I found in other posts like disabling the Catalyst Control Centre, stopping terminal services and changing the wait to kill service to 500ms but nothing seems to have worked.

Here is a HijackThis log if it helps:

A:slow shutdown

Here are some steps you can take to try to speed up Windows Shutdown. Before editing the registry, be sure to either create an image of your system partition or backup the registry. If you don't know how, please ask.

 1) Make sure "clear pagefile at shutdown" is not enabled:
start - run - regedit
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management]

Set ClearPageFileAtShutdown value to 0

2) Start - Run - Regedit
Navigate to the following Registry key:
HKEY CURRENT USER\Control Panel\Desktop
Double click on the AutoEndTasks entry and replace the 0 with a 1 in the Value data text box

For the next two, if the dword value indicated does not exist, create it:

Double click on the WaitToKillAppTimeout entry in the right pane and change the Value data to 2000

Double click on the HungAppTimeout entry in the right pane and change the Value data to 1000

Reboot

3) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control
Right-click on WaitToKillServiceTimeout and change it to 2000

help pls.

A:Slow Shutdown

Try right clicking the Desktop > New > Shortcut. In the box that appears type "shutdown -s -t 0 -f" and then press okay. This shortcut will shutdown the computer, with a timeout of zero seconds and it will try to force running applications to close. Also make sure your computer is not installing updates when it shuts down. If it is when you click shutdown there should be a label or button that says something along the lines of shutdown without installing updates.

A:Very Slow shutdown

You may have programs running that need to shut down and they are taking extra time.

Type msconfig in run, go to startup, turn off what you don`t need running all the time, go to services, hide all microsoft services, turn off what you don`t need running all the time. see if this helps.

I don't think it is a coincidence but, since I downloaded and activated McAfee Virus scan it takes a full thirty seconds for my computer to shutdown, counting from the time the "Windows is now shutting down" window is displayed. Is it because Mcafee is doing a system check? In any event, it's a pain in the neck. Any way to get around it?

Hi,

I need help, my laptop (Toshiba M40-313) has a very long shutdown time.
A bit of recent history - it got a Trojan, I managed to get rid of it with Super AntiSpyware Free edition. I also un-installed Windows SP3 and installed one from another source as I read somewhere that it could have been the SP3 that allowed the trojan in the first place.

I also re-installed Windows, wiping it first.
Now the laptop "hangs" when I click shutdown or restart, could take as long as 10 mins to shut down, in that time it remains on the desktop screen, and Control Alt Delete is disabled. Please help!

I am running Zone Alarm & AVG all the time, but have Spybot, Super Anti Spyware & Malwarebytes to hand to scan if need be...
I have tried all the registry fixes to speed up shutdown but none seem to work, I need a real solution.
Thanks

I hope you will have some suggestions for my XP slow shutdown. All the security has been checked and all is ok.This is a legit Windows XP.It seems to have slowed down in a period of a week to 10 days.I haven't downloaded any programs, haven't deleted anything, nothing out of the ordinary.I can click on "turn off" or "even restart" and the waiting begins.I tried turning on the computer and then shutting it down and it works fine.If I go on the internet for awhile, then the waitng begins. While I am waiting I have clicked on IE and it says I can't get on because the computer is in shutdown,so it's trying. What does waiting mean, well I have waited 10-15 minutes and nothing. So,if anyone might have any ideas or suggestions, please pass them on and I'll give it a try.I'm growing old waiting for this thing to shutdown. If it helps any, this machine is a Sony Vaio P4 2.8 512mb,which I really like and enjoy it's features. Thanks to anyone who even has the slightest idea I might try. This is so annoying.

A:XP Slow to shutdown

I had occasional shutdown delays for quite a while. Then they stopped altogether after I disconnected my somewhat aging scanner. Perhaps have a look in your Device manager and see if any warning icons are there and/or dis/reconnect some suspect peripherals that may require driver updating possibly.
