Avira detected "psexec.cfexe"?

Q: Avira detected "psexec.cfexe"?

I uninstalled Trend Micro this morning and installed the free Avira Antivirus. It detected "psexec.cfexe" which has something to do with the "APPL/PsExec.E application". I have included a copy of the scan results as well as a HJT log.

Preferred Solution: Avira detected "psexec.cfexe"?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I have run webroot antivirus with antispyware, several times. Every time I do, it finds the same virus (sometimes others with similar names). This is from the latest scan:

Mal/EncPk-CZ
Troj/FakeAle-FK

and some cookies. However often I quarantine them, they reappear on the next scan and I also can't get the desktop to go back to its normal appearance, it's gone white with a big warning (as above) and refers to:

win32/adware.virtumonde
win32/privacyremover.M64

having been detected on my computer.

I have gone through the 5 steps.

This is the active scan log:

My battery says "1% plugged in, not charging". I ordered a new battery, installed today got msg saying "battery not detected", i shut it down, took battery out, replaced, restarted (several time), same msg. I visited many forums and read many threads on both of these issues. Apparently both of these issues are common with Dell, but the general consensus of the community is that i need to do a Bios update..So i downloaded the driver for the Bios update and attempted to install is, but got a massage that the adapter AND the battery must both be plugged in, in order to do the update..well..how can i "plug the battery in" when my pc is unable to detect the battery??!!!So i shut it down for like the 10th time this evening..took battery out and replaced it with the old battery..the one with 1% charge, but at least my pc is able to detect this one. I go back to the Bios update download, attempt to run it and get a msg saying battery must be 10% or higher to run the update **sigh** really frustrated now. In Windows XP, fully updated, I have several folders full of mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

But all the figures in the "Duration" column appear to be in "hours" and "minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03", but what I want is "minutes" and "seconds".

Any thoughts as to how to change this?

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

I copied some .mp3 files to another (old) PC on my home network, and it displayed the duration field correctly:

Also, the properties window correctly shows the duration also:

I'm not the only person to have this problem. I received a private message from a member of another forum where I posted about this problem several weeks ago. That person also has the same problem with the duration field.

o.k. background of the situation:

Mt pc had been very sluggish doing anything (yes everything including for example, taking 15 seconds to delete very small file),

I have run sereral AVs - malwarebytes iobit, avg, avira, avast, and sysinternals process utilities.

iobit uninstaller was hanging when uninstalling AVira. It would complete using the program's own installer, but hang when deep cleaning.

I manually used windows explorer to delete the Avira folders. Some items could be deleted but not others. I noticed 52,000 update log files for Avira, by looking at the name of the log files, saw that Avira was trying to update evry couple seconds unsuccessfully and writing a log file every time.I am unanble to end the update processes in taskmanager and the administrator command prompt "taskkill" onlky gets some of them, but the process rejuvenates immediately.

I researched and read that recently Avira changed so that a user could not disable automatic updates.

2 thoughts:
1. Reinstall Avira so I can stop the auto updates

2. Download a program to zap any process.

Thoughts?

Thank you.

I just downloaded the file to create the Avira AntiVir Rescue CD from Avira's website and made a rescue CD with it. I then booted up from that CD and ran a scan. Immediately after running the scan it said, "Finished Scanning" and had no log file. I tried both the "Scan all files" and "Smart scan."

I found out that this is a bug, but have not found a solution.

I'm trying to fix my brother's computer after he opened a trojan attached to an email. The email was the one saying your credit card had been charged for airline tickets.

The computer is a Dell Dimension 3100 running Windows XP SP2.

The first problem is that after normal login there is a blue screen with a yellow window in the window with the message

"Warning! Spyware detected on your computer! Install an antivirus or spyware remover to clean your computer."

There are no icons visible. The only action I can perform is CTL-ALT-DEL to bring up the Windows Task Manager. I told my brother to start in Safe Mode from which he scanned the computer using AVG Free Edition which was installed before the infection. This did not fix the problem.

Starting Safe Mode I now get a black screen with Safe Mode in the corners and the operating system name at top. The blue login screen then comes up with Administrator and my brothers account. I click on Administrator and I get the same black screen as before with Safe Mode in the corners and the writing at top. My brothers account does the same. There are no icons or Start button visible.

Again, the only program I can bring up is the Windows Task Manager. Using that, I managed to install and run SmitfraudFix which was given as a solution to "Spyware detected" screen. After rebooting this did not fix the problem. I also installed SpyHunter 3.5.11 which found Zlob.Trojan, Rogue.AntivirusXP 2008 plus some other ... Read more

I picked up a computer off craiglist was thoroughly enjoying my gtx geforce 680 ( https://boston.craigslist.org/sob/sys/6239989909.html ) when it "crashed" about 6 hours after purchase. When I rebooted I received the "no hard disk detected" message. Upon launching bios setup the hard drive is listed with details as being attached to its corresponding sata port. I am trying to determine if my hard drive is broken or if it needs remounting or some other sort of procedure.

The hard drive is a slightly dated WD Carver 1 TB SATA internal drive interacting with an asus motherboard. I did notice the boot order for drives had been rearranged putting an external and an optical disk drive in position 1 and 2 for boot directories. I disabled both the external and optical disc and selected the WD sata drive as the first preference for booting. Still I am getting the same error. I read somewhere that if the bios is recognized in setup but is still not recognized for booting that I may need to run a 32bit diagnostic. The forum I saw the diagnostic post mentioned on was in reference to a dell machine. I don't really know what this is or if it exists on my ASUS mother board.

In short: how can I tell If my hard drive needs replacement?

If Bios recognizing the drive is sign of life how can I get my computer to recognize this drive again?

My office just upgraded, and I can no longer use Windows XP. On this system, I was able to add a separate taskbar to facilitate quick access to commonly-browsed folder locations on our vast network, and another one expedited the launching of useful programs and lists. Each task on each taskbar was represented with a big custom icon to save eye strain. I had them installed in opposite vertical margins, and they were set on auto-hide to keep them out of the way when not being used. Just move your mouse pointer to the left or right margin, and BAM! Sorry for the cliche, but I really got used to the convenience of what I had set up, and I just don't think I can be as efficient without anything comparable.

Now there appears to be nothing comparable in the Windows 7 GUI, and it's making me sick with rage! I see only the option to put a "toolbar" on an existing "taskbar", and no option to create any additional taskbars! This cramps up your one-and-only taskbar, plus the tiny toolbar access buttons require way too much precision for anything that's supposed to be quick. When you've figured out how to bring up that ridiculous button, the list that it yields is small enough to cause painful eyestrain - nothing efficient, much less cool about this at all! I have seen customization options in other OS GUIs that may have resolved some of these issues, but I see none such in W7.

I have tried every google search string that I can think of, and found... Read more

I use Avira Antivir as my AV program. Whenever I do a scan, it invariably comes up with 7 warnings. The report shows the "warnings" to be scans of the master boot sectors, and indicates "the device is not ready", plus scans of hiberfil.sys and pagefile.sys (which are 2GB+ files) where it says "the file could not be opened".

Q1: Do I need to be concerned about scanning these sectors/files, which I assume are active after Windows loads and can only be scanned before Windows loads.

Q2: If I should scan them, what's the best way to do that (e.g., Safe Mode)?

A:Avira Antivir "warnings"

hiberfil.sys is created when your PC goes into hibernation/sleep . Pagefile.sys is the memory swap file that is used when the system needs to use more RAM than you have. I know the pagefil is locked at all times by Windows, so you cannot read/scan it. I guess the same is true of hiberfil.

Hi,

When our website users click on an html attachment embedded on a web-page in IE9, the download manager will not display the "Open" option. It will only display "Save" and "Cancel" which our users don't like, having to save the
html document in a folder to open it. Whereas, when downloading attachments like pdf, word etc. all three options are displayed.

Is there any setting to tweak , which will display all the 3 options for HTML attachments as well?

A:IE9 download manager will not display "Open" option (only "Save" and "Cancel" is displayed) for downloading HTML documents.

Hi,
As you know, the Open-Save-Cancel dialog box helps you prevent your computer from affecting by virus while downloading.
So I suggest you test to reset all zones to a lower level temporarily and then please attempt to download this html attachment again.

However, since you can normally download the other documents, I suspect there is some restriction in the website which you are trying to view. I recommend you to contact the administrator of that website if possible.
could you please send me the link of the website from where you are trying to download the html attachment?
Thanks!

Hello guys, the last week I've been strugling with these nasty BSODs. At first I thought it was my HDDs as ntoskrn.exe somewhat hinted towards that from googling it. My HDDs have been causing a lot of trouble earlier as well due to their somewhat long years of service. However, I've recently reformated my computer and installed W7 on a brand new Corsair Force GT 120GB SSD hoping the BSODs would go away, they didn't.

I googled BSOD and I stumbled upon this forum and I thought I'd give it a try. I'm somewhat desperate, as I need my computer working for both work, school and amusement.

I've been trying to run Memtest in order to test my memory but without any results. I'm also currently running on only on 4GB chip instead of two, to see if the problem still exists. Also, without any results.

This is the second time I'm writing this thread btw, I was just about to post it and my PC crashed.

Here is my two logs + dxdiag (last crash didn't generate a log oddly enough).

Here is additional hardware/gear that I use:

Razer Megalodon 7.1 Headset
Razer Naga
Logitech G19
Logitech C920 (Webcam)
Corsair 750W PSU

My temperatures are also good. Both CPU and MB idles at around ~25. GPU's all good too. I'm also using a Corsair 650D chassi with dustfilters at both air-income so dust is minimal. On top off this, I use airpressure to clean away dust somewhat regularly and I also did exactly this 2 days ago when I reinstalled the pc.

Ok so I'm using a custom visual style made by another user however I don't really like the buttons used that I mentioned above. The creator states it is acceptable to change the theme to however you like as long as you don't redistribute it anywhere.

Ok so I opened up the .msstyles file (using Restorator) located in the theme folder of this VS. I went into the images directory and located what seems to be the images used for the buttons. Intuitively, it seems like it would make sense to replace those images with different ones (perhaps from another visual style) and it should change them. However, would this actually work? Could the theme get messed up in some other way (like proportions or something if the new button images are smaller)? I don't know of any other way to change them that would be easy.

But I did run into another problem. For some visual styles I can't even locate those buttons in the images directory. Where else would they be?

Hi everyone!

Yesterday my HP laptop (Windows 7) started getting BSOD with various types of errors (mostly "STOP: 0x00000F4", "STOP: 0x0000007A", "c00021a" and one "missing %hs, c0000135"). Most of the time it restarts without any issues and works fine right after the BSOD and then an hour or two later I get a BSOD again.

I have tried restoring to Last Known Good Configuration, startup repair, hard disk check, virus scans and I also uninstalled any recently added programs I could think of and cleared up more than 50% of my hard disk space. None of these seem to have helped and I still get BSOD regularly.

I have attached the folder from the SF Diagnostic Tool and would appreciate any advice!

Hi!

Yesterday, I got a virus which changed the background of my Windows XP to a blue background with the message "Warning! Spyware detected on your computer! Install an antivirus or spyware remover to clean your computer."

Also, my screensaver has been changed to a fake BSOD and then the Windows startup screen which is highly irritating! On top of this, I am being bombarded with pop ups and redirections when using the internet.

Here is a copy of my HijackThis log:

This is the second time this occurs, and both times were ingame right after 2-3 minutes when launching,GTAV and now with BO2,it just went off and on with the following:

"Power supply surges detected during the previous power on.
Asus Anti-surge was triggered to protect system from unstable power supply unit!
Press F1 to Run Setup"

What could be causing this ?

A:Sudden shutdown "Power supply surges detected during the previous...."

This could be caused by your household power supply suffering from a power surge, or a sudden short power outage.

Your computer PSU (Power Supply Unit) is developing a fault. If your PSU has a separate power switch, usually located at the back of the computer on the PSU, try switching of on & off a few times. Only do this with the computer shut down. Sometimes these switches lose contact through lack of use, so operating them a few times helps.

You need a UPS (Uninterruptable Power Supply). Google Uninterruptable Power Supplies & see which ones might suit you.

I had a false positive a few days ago, so reminded me was time to use my scanners. Most like MBAM, SAS, HJT, etc. found nothing, as well as KIS 2012.

Also ran Ad-Aware 10 full scan. It found 3 things - one was "malware.js.generic" that it could only narrow down to the Sent folder in a Gmail IMAP folder in my T-bird profile.

It's kinda hard to figure out if it's real or false when dealing w/ entire Sent folder, even though it's not that big. I checked the folder on VirusTotal & Virscan. Each found 1 hit for the same infection on the sent folder. The hits came from small, lesser known scanners.

Is there a way w/ any scanner that ID's infection in an email folder to narrow it to one message?
I really don't want to upload my entire sent folder anywhere for analysis due to privacy. I also don't want to delete it based on a possible false positive.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

I've posted this across at the VirtualDR forums too here http://discussions.virtualdr.com/showthread.php?p=1251748#post1251748

Similar to a few other posts there I started with a popup pretending to be from microsoft telling me I had a virus on my computer and trying to get me to download Antiviruspro 2009 (a fake antivirus program). From there it stopped me visiting any websites that might help me remove it (anti spyware sites etc, even google) by changing the address of any site I typed so that they wouldn't work. It somehow managed to close my antivirus software and prevents any exe's in its blacklist (e.g. any anti virus programs - including the setup exes of other anti virus software so you couldn't install a new one) from running.

Here are a few threads that I've found where the user has had similar experiences as me.

I've been following the advice in the second thread; renaming a few of the exes has allowed me to run most of the requested programs and I now have some logs which I hope you can help me with.

Earlier this evening I randomly got 3 or 4 pop-up windows that were followed by a blue screen.
In a panic or something I pressed enter and the blue screen went away. Everything closed immediately by itself and then showed my desktop.
Ever since, my background is blue with a yellow box that reads
"Warning! Spyware detected on your computer!
Install an antivirus or spyware remover to clean your computer."

I haven't noticed any difference in how my computer is running, other than the fact that I have no desktop control.
When I right-click my desktop I can't change my wallpaper or any desktop settings.

I keep getting blue screens that go away after I press enter, although, my computer did shut off after I got one of the screens.

I've read posts relating to this but tried following the steps and things were too different.

Any help is appreciated. Thank you!

Hello, and welcome.

Scans are best run in normal mode unless otherwise instructed.

Please do this:

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.Close all applications and windows.
Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt <-this one will be minimized
Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt here.
Please attach extra.txt to your post.
To attach a file to a new post, simplyClick the[Manage Attachments] button under Additional Options > Attach Files on the post composition page, and
copy and paste the following into the "Upload File from your Computer" box:C:\Deckard\System Scanner\extra.txt

Click Upload.

What DSS will do: create a new System Restore point in Windows XP and Vista.
clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, and Internet Cache Files, and also empty the Recycle Bin on all drives.
check some important areas of your system and produce a report for your analyst to review. DSS automatically runs HijackThis for you, but it will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have HijackThis installed.

Hello + thanks for your help in advance ;-)
I always use Winamp as my audio player and today randomly recieved the following message from avg anti-virus free (up to date):

I've reported it/sent to analysis. I've tried removing the threat as a power user as I uninstalled winamp and installed it again. After that process, winamp will not repond and the above will come up again. This happens if I try to open winamp every time now... winamp just won't respond and avg will tell me about zlib.dll
Moving to vault did not help either. Neither did heal. Is it a virus, or a false positive?

Hi, I tried to find info on this and couldn't and I don't have much time since I'm using someone else's computer and I am really scared. I was on google today and this message about "Antivirus SP Install" came up and I tried to cancel it but I'm not sure what happened and then everything froze. When I rebooted my desktop was white with a message saying "Window's warning: Spyware Detected on your Computer! and the names were something like sys32.privacyremoverms64 and another one. I am scared to turn my computer on again so I cannot get the exact names. I tried running Norton 360 and it found something but then shut down and when I tried to reboot the next time I could not do anything, there is just an hourglass so I turned it off again and left it off.

I had a virus a few years ago that someone on here helped me fix (thank you!) but I don't remember anything, including how to put my computer in safe mode. I'm in med school and in the middle of studying for boards so this is the worst possible timing and I don't know what to do. If noone can help me on here maybe there is a suggestion of where I could take my computer?

I downloaded a virus yesterday (8/10) trying to open a video of the opening ceremony of the Olympics (I do not remember the exact URL). The virus was disguised as a video codec for Windows Mediaplayer. After I downloaded the file, a blue screen with a warning in a yellow box replaced my desktop image. The warning says:

"Warning! Spyware detected on your computer. Install an antivirus or spyware remover to clean your computer."

I have tried to remove it with McAfee Antivirus and with a Virus Removal tool I got from my University, but neither of these was able to remove the program. Can you help me?

Hi all,

Last night, my HTPC was happily working. However, the PC suddently froze and I had to manually force a shudown. Then, I tried to reboot and I got the following message:
"disk boot failure insert system disk"

I have 2 HDs and the BIOS and POST are not listing the HDs at all. I checked the cables but i doubt both HD cables disconnected at the same time anyway.

Any ideas will be much appreciated

Thanks

A:sudden "disk boot failure". Drives not detected by BIOS

Take the cover off the computer.

Blow out all dust.

Make sure that all fans are running.

Leave cover off, temporarily, till cause located.

Does computer now boot up correctly.

If not, reset the bios to default settings. Problem gone?

Hello,

Please open an elevated command prompt.
When you have the command promt open please enter the following command:
sfc /scannow and press enter.
After the scan is 100% and the scan did repair files please restart your computer.

Please re-open an elevated command prompt and enter the following command:

Few weeks ago my Gateway DX4300 displayed a dialogue box that stated, "Your Computer has detected a Trojan Horse Virus, Shutting down." It then shut down, as the message stated it would. No Biggy...figured the computer was doing what it was meant to do upon a security threat. Well, after a few minutes I tried restarting the computer, and nothing, no power, no lights, no noises, completely dead.

So...thus far, I have tested the PSU with the paper clip trick, and an actual PSU tester, and it works just fine, according to those 2 test. I have also replaced the motherboard, thinking for sure that had to be the problem, but of course not, still no power whatsoever. I then figured, maybe it is the power button itself, so I used a screwdriver to short the 2 power on switch pins, and nothing. I have also replaced the CMOS battery, tested multiple outlets, power cord is good, reseated all connections. Also tried jumping it by moving the jumper from pins 1 & 2 to 2 & 3. And still nothing...

I have no idea what to try next...any help would be greatly appreciated!

Was also wondering is there a Trojan Horse that can actually cause a complete power/system failure...tried googling it, couldn't find anything on it.

Hi,

Recently, an error message "Windows detected a hard disk problem" always pop ups in my monitor.

I have done "Error Checking" also " Defragmentation"...but that error message doesn't disappear.

What should I do?

Thanks a Lot.

A:Error message " Widows detected a hard disk problem"

That is not a most welcome message.

I would immediately backup the most important personal data and run the DOS version of Manufacturer's Diagnostic Utility. If it passes without any event reported, fine. But if it finds bad sectors and even if it repairs it, be wary. Not to be taken aback by any catastrophic failure that may occur unannounced, always backup all your personal data and also image your system regularly.
