A few questions about the T580

Q: A few questions about the T580

Hello, sorry for posting these basic questions but I've done some research and I want to make sure that I make the right decision when buying a new T580. I've been out of the loop in tech for a few years now, and I'm just learning now about hardware BIOS whitelists, etc. I want to buy the most basic T580 model and make sure I can upgrade certain components later on when I have the money available to do so. 1) Can I upgrade the basic model with the i5-8250u / 4GB RAM to 16GB of RAM later on? PSREF says yes, up to 32GB, and I've watched videos that say there are two slots for RAM available. Just want to make sure there is not any limitation and that I can upgrade later on to at least 16GB. 2)I already have a Samsung SSD - SATA III 2.5 inch. Since this model has a 2.5 drive I assume I can replace it with mine. But am I limiting myself in anyway for future updates if I don't get one of the NVME drives now? 3) I would possibly like to get the WWAN card later on. Is it possible to buy and add one later on? 4) Will this computer run dual 4k external monitors, should I ever get them? Since money is very tight, my only priority right now would be to get the stuff I cannot add later on (3840 x 2160 screen, possibly graphics card but would have to bump up to 8350u). Thanks!

Preferred Solution: A few questions about the T580

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello,I'm interested in buying a T580 thinkpad and got some questions: 1. does the 4K display consumes more battery power than the FHD display? 2. for those customers with 4k display - are you satisfied with that choice? (are the fonts readable)2. in reality, how long does the battery last with standard use? (with all types of rear batteries)?3. how is your overall impression of this model? Thanks, Johnny

Hello everyone,I would like to take advantage of the current sale on T line (since I kind of need the laptop ASAP). Hence all the questions: 1. I am planning to get the UHD screen. Some places reference it as 100% AdobeRGB while the shopping page just says 400 nit. How accurate are the colors, really? I do some photography editing on the go, so this would be a great thing to have. 2. Speaking of UHD screen - how big of a power drain should I expect? I plan on getting smallest batteries to minimize the weight and then purchasing an extra batter (probably the large one) to supplement for cases when I'll be away from power outlets for extended periods. Any recommendations here would be great. 3. Upgradability - I want to order the cheapest HDD because instead $200 that Lenovo is asking for 256GB NVMe drive I can buy a 500GB 970 @ $140 or 1 TB @ $277. If ordered with regular (spin) disk - do I have a hardware present to use NVMe HDD? Or do I need to order additional cable? 4. Temperatures - how hot does it get under heavy loads? Thanks in advance for responses.

HelloWould anyone please be able to help with some t580 questions? 1) I wanted to know what the FHD (not UHD) screen is like especially in terms of sRGB, adobeRGB and PWM? If not, are there any comparisons to the T570 FHD screen? 2) the laptop comes with 4 cell 32wh front battery.  The rear battery configurations seem to be- 6 cell 48wh- 3 cell 24wh- 6 cell li-ion 72wh cylindrical  Is the front battery removable? Also the 6 cell 48wh option seems to be cheaper than the 3 cell 24wh - anyone know why this is? The front battery still remains with all of these combinations doesn't it? Thanks

I refer to another similar complain post, I just met a similar problem with lenovo bad screen quality and poor customer service. I bought Thinkpad T580 laptop last year and used in a  normal  environment (always on the desk in my home). One day I found there is a 2x2cm light/white spot on the screen bottom area, which can only be observed when the screen background is in white color. Lenovo told me that it's cased by outside pressure  and they are not covering my screen replacement  under warranty. I own another thinkpad x260 which use in my daily and oversea business travel for over three years and everything is still fine. That's why I purchase T580 for my home use. It is disppointing  that Lenovo can  not  stand behind their product and stand behind their promise to customers (warranty).  Lenovo advertises the Thinkpad T580 as following on their webside: "We test ThinkPads against 12 military-grade requirements and more than 200 quality checks to ensure they run in extreme conditions. From the arctic wilderness to desert dust storms, from zero-gravity to spills and drops, you can trust your T Series device to handle whatever life throws your way." I disgree with their statement and  not going to pay ~$295 parts+ ~30 labour total around 325 to fix my screen. Very disapointed with Lenovo quality and customer service, I won't consider Lenovo again if there is another choice.

Hi, i have poured all of my summer money into a brand new T580.I belived i was getting superior build quality and keyboard. Well at least one of these is true. But it came with its share of problems The plastic only chasis bends even when picking the notebook up -> the screen is getting scratched by the keyboard. The static crackling sounds with ultrasound circuit whining  in Windows resolved only by disabling TurboBoost and underclocking aka Intel SpeedStepInability to wake up from the deeper sleep/suspend. I have dualboot and waking up after suspending from Windows gets me into Linux every time. Pressing F12 does nothing. And then after i restart into Windows my mouse in the Thunderbolt port stops working. So i got to reboot a second time. The motherboard has no daughterboards, wrecking one port means replacing the whole motherboard or resoldering the portNitpickingFirmware takes 6-7 secs to do its thing on every boot.Non existant Linux fingerprint drivers .Keyboard does not remember it's backlight settings between reboots. The top plastic is uncleanable. It becomes hydrophobic where you touch it frequently. If something has a solution please let me know. I am more than happy to try it.Sending the notebook for repair would likely solve nothing.I just expected the machine to live up to the legacy it has. There is so many cheaper convertibles and gaming laptops i did not buy just to have this one and so far, i don't feel like it was worth it.So ple... Just purchased T580 with UHD display and Intel UHD 620.  The default resolution is 4K (3840x2160).  When I go to display setting, I found no QHD with the correct aspect ratio (i.e. to get full screen on built-in display, I need 2560x1440 but the options I have are 2560x2048, 2560x1920 and 2560x1600). Anyone knows how solve this?  I tried Intel Graphics custom resolution but when I clicked "add", it did nothing.

I have a brand new T580 in front of me. I am trying unsuccessfully to boot it from a USB stick. In case it makes any difference I am trying to do this before ever booting into Windows. Here is what I have tried. First attempt: Power On; Hit Enter at Lenovo splash screen; Hit F12 at Startup Interupt Menu; Select my USB drive from list; Hit Enter; screen goes back for about one second and then the F12 menu reappears like nothing happened. Force power off by pressing and holding the power button. Second attempt: Power On; Hit Enter at Lenovo splash screen; Hit F1 at Startup Interupt Menu; to eter the BIOS Setup. Disable secure boot (Security > Secure Boot). Save (F10); repeat first attempt. Same result. Third attempt: as before except that I additionally set Startup > UEFI/Legacy Boot to Both and tried again. Same result. Fourth attmpt: as before except that I changed the boot priority to put legacy first. Same result. Fifth attempt: as before except that I set  Startup > UEFI/Legacy Boot  to Legacy Only. Same result. The USB stick has Grub on it and boots Linux distributions. It works in about a dozen other machines that I use it on regularly.  I tried two separate USB sticks and I tried both USB ports on the right-hand side of the computer. If I can't get this to work then it's going back. I am stuck. Please help!

Hey so I recently purchased a systemboard replacement off of eBay. The 'Supervisor Password' was set. He found a different board to send to me to fix that problem. Thing is as far as i can tell its a T580 (01YR306) that he wants to send me. I have a T570 (02HL452) that I am replacing. Is this going to cause a problem like i think it might? My search results were limited when trying to get a full list of compatiable boards. And there is no way this supervisor password isnt some default setting? No other security features are enabled so I don't see why there would be a supervisor password set if nothign else is. I assume its from a company that just didnt remove it and all is legit just not usable for my situation. I mean i can boot into windows just fine. I didnt miss somethign about a default setting when the battery is removed for extended period of time though, did I? Thanks -James

You could, for example, swap an i5 motherboard for an i7, but it would be cheaper to sell yours and buy a machine that meets your needs.

Hello All, What is the Thunderbolt 3 port on my Thinkpad T580 in relation to the cables that I find online? This is my first computer with USB C and Thunderbolt 3 so I'm having to buy new cables. The Thunderbolt port in my T580 has a horizontal piece in the middle with a tiny vertical bit at each end of the horizontal piece, all of this being inside the port. All the Thunderbolt 3 cables that I see online look a bit like they would fit into a USB C / USB 3.1 port. I have spent hours trawling online and also on Amazon and other sales sites looking for a diagram or similar showing what a Thunderbolt 3 and a USB 3 ports are supposed to look like, with no success. I also see for sale on sites what seems to be cables for USB 3 compatible with a Thunderbolt 3 looking like the same thing but when I look at the ports in my T580 these ports are distinctly different. Sorry to write so much but I've lost hours searching for the answer not wanting to write such an apparently stupid question ! ToutouVik

Hello- this is my first post to the Lenovo community forums. I just received a brand-new T580, custom ordered directly from Lenovo. If it matters, this was supposed to have a 500GB spinning disk and 16GB SSD (Intel Optane PCIe). Windows 10 was the only option for pre-installed OS (Professional, in this case). This new machine will not boot and has yet to boot. I received it on a Friday afternoon. Once I unboxed and charged it and tried to boot, tech support conveniently closed for the whole weekend. I opened a ticket in Lenovo's MTSA (yet another account to open), with no response. Now I am turning to the forums. I installed the battery and charged it, then attempted to boot. My first attempt resulted in INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE, then rebooted. The same thing happened again, then started "Automatic Repair" Automatic Repair (a/k/a Startup Repair) did nothing, probably because there is no existing image to revert to or older version of Windows to fall back on. I get the following errors: "System Restore: To use System Restore, you must specify which Windows installation to restore. Restart this computer, select an operating system, and then select System Restore." (Of course, that does not happen-this is a brand-new laptop) Then "Re-image Your Computer: An internal error occurred. The following information might help you resolve the error: STATUS_WAIT_2 (0x80070002)" (Good luck!) I ran all the Lenovo diagnostics, and they all pass with flying colors. I also like that my display... Read more

Dear All,I'm about to buy a new laptop for work (University lecturer). The laptop will be my main work computer and most of the time on the desk, attached to two external screens, keyboard, mouse, etc. I'm working from home as well, but commute by car. I have 1-4 meetings per week for which I'll take the laptop. Very occasionally I'm off any power source for up to 6 hours or so. For work, I sometimes need a bit more power (complex data analyses), but generally it's mostly just office work. However, I often work with multiple windows (like two Word documents next to each other/multiple big Excel files. Finally, it will also be my private laptop for Adobe Lightroom (raw files), couch surfing, watching movies, and very occasional gaming. The laptop is intended to last for 5 years at least (I had a i5 Thinkpad T430s until a week ago which I was happy with, but it was stolen). As far as I can see, both laptops do fulfil my needs and can serve me well - which makes it so hard to choose :-)Given the budget I have available, I have the two choices:  Lenovo T580 4k DisplayConfiguration I'd choose: 4k display, i7 CPU, 8 or 16 GB RAM, 512 GB HDD to be replaced by a 1-2 TB 2.5" SSD, no dGPU (no MX150)+ 4K Display: I recently have seen one of a 15.6" laptop and really loved it. 200% scaling seems fine for most of the time, but when I need space (Excel) I could easily switch to 175% because it's so sharp and crisp.+ Exchangable battery and big battery (I'd take the... First... long time T series user going back to the initial ones. Had been using a T520 up until I finally gave in and purchased a T580 over the BF in July sale. Since I have been using a dock for a long time and like the convenience factor I got the Pro Dock (40AH0135US) to go along with the T580. Long story short... the first T580 arrives with a blown system board. I send it back and 11 days later another T580 arrives. This one boots and has no issues off the dock. It's fast and definitely an upgrade from the T520. First thing I notice in placing it on the dock is that the side mount process is tedious. Reading other posts seems to confirm that experience. It's nowhere near as well engineered as the bottom dock solution and I spend more time trying to insert the dock mechanism than I ever had with the legacy dock solutions. I eventually get things perfectly aligned and power on. Right off the neither external monitor is working. I have two Dell UHD monitors connected to the DP's on the dock and neither comes on. I mess with the cables and nothing, I take the T580 off and re-insert... nothing. I call Lenovo and without even trying to diagnose the issue they issue an RMA for the dock. I get another dock 2 days later and this one works for exactly 1 day. The external monitors work and then 10 hours later when I come home from my job and place the T580 on the dock they don't work. Nothing changes but somehow things are back to not working again. To be clear at no point from powe... Read more

I am trying to figure out if I can use a 3 monitor setup with my T580 laptop.  I have the laptop docked on the 'ThinkPad Pro Docking Station'.  I am using the two DisplayPorts from that to go to two HP EliteDisplay E243i monitors.  I have a third monitor, a HP Compaq LA2206x that I connected to the HDMI port on the laptop but when running any of the monitors from the dock, the HP Compaq will not be detected.  The integrated graphics card says it can drive 3 monitors so I'm not sure why this won't work?  Does the HDMI port go to sleep/shut off when monitors are being used through the dock?

Please advise if Lenovo can deliver T580 with preinstalled Windows 7 Professional as out of box delivery so save several tinkering hours at user's garage. It had been tremendous performance issues with T570 with Windows 10 resource hog experience. I would not prefer to run Windows 10 again on T580 - high performance machine hogged by Windows 10. If Lenovo could pre-install downgrade option out of the box that would save several hours of research by end users, T580 with Windows 7 would perform more stable and solid provided if they have enabled all the drivers to function properly.  This has been hugely frustrating experiencing to deal with T570 machine running Windows-10 Pro, I had to dump the machine. I dont have much confidence to run T580 on windows 10 pro, it would not even match T520 machine ( 7 years old machine) running on Windows -10. Looking forward for the solution, request Lenovo team to enable Downgrade option as part of the customization to save users's time and stable user experience. If Lenovo Does not deliver out of the box, first thing to do after the machine is to wipe out Windows 10 to install, Please let us know if the drivers available or I would be placing a ticket to go through 100 steps to get it done.  Thank you,Mamba.

I got the T580 in July 2018 and BSODs have been occurring at seemingly random times. I contacted support right away and they had me run "Lenovo Diagnostics" tool to check the hardware. It ran for many hours and passed all of the tests. I've also ran memtest86 and no errors were reported.I have a hunch it may be battery/power related. BSODs seem to occur when the first battery gets low and switches to the second battery. I don't usually let the battery get low, so it's been hard to confirm the connection.  It did crash earlier tonight and the battery is low, but it didn't switch to the other battery yet. I have had the laptop open to install an SSD (CT1000MX500SSD1) shortly after I got the machineT580 Model: 20L9CTO1WW dump reports in spoilers below and I can post the actual dmp files if needed. Any insight as to what to try and where to poke around will be appreciated. Let me know if there is anything else i can provide that could be useful.Thank you for your help!   dump reports:Spoiler (Highlight to read)Microsoft (R) Windows Debugger Version 10.0.18239.1000 AMD64
