Battery not detected or charged on Thinkpad Yoga 14... after firmware update

Q: Battery not detected or charged on Thinkpad Yoga 14... after firmware update

Get a messagebox saying "battery not detected" and it's not charging from mains. So laptop has now turned into a desktop... as needs plugging in continually... making it almost useless for purpose. This happened exactly after firmware update a few weeks ago. By coincidence the management software also kindly informed me that it could manage the battery better and stop it wearing out by only charging up to 90% - fair enough, but don't treat me like a muppet and disable it without any way to get it back. Tons of Windows 10 updates today (after not being able to use it for a few weeks) but still no battery. I tried F1 BIOS but nothing there to enable the battery (only to disable it). This is frankly a joke - timing shows it's due to the firmware update because the battery was fine and lasted a couple of hours right before. In 25 years of countless laptops, have never had this problem - batteries weaken gradually but don't suddenly lock up and require a paid replacement suddenly. How do we run down our original battery properly before polluting the planet? Phil

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I bought 2 batteries original Lenovo 4.4Ah for the tablet on ebay. The battery was sell as new. When I try to charge it just blink ornage and no charge. The seller refuse to take back the battery telling the price was low take as it is. He said all other batteries he sell where ok however this was the last one they sell and they where few years old. Then I did open the battery case and mesure the voltage all batteries was zero. I decide to charge evey single cell wit USB charger and a resistor. I was able to charge all the cell to 3.5-3.6V with a total voltage of 14V. However the pin of the battery show 0V. After reading on web I find out that the firmware is in Ram and consume some power. The for such long period of time drain the battery to 0V, very good design.... to sell battery. With no more power since it is ram the firmware is gone.In any case, I am afraid to buy new battery to get same problem since it is old computer. I have found that there is a lenovo utility for firmware utility but my computer is not in the list. Can I try or there is another solution. Only solution out of firmware update is buy a used working battery and replace with the one I have taking care to keep power during replacement (this is quite touchy). I thought may be to use a similar battery as Thinkpad X61 and just change the case. Maybe there is another third part solution. Hi All!Using the Lenovo System Update tool, I've updated the bios. It said everything went succesful. However under Device manager, there is an error for the System Firmware:"This device cannot start. (Code 10)Indicates a revision number encountered or specified is not one known by the service. It may be a more recent revision than the service is aware of."I've tried "Update Driver" but everytime with this same result.I've also tried "Uninstall Device". But then it goes back to a driver from 2006 (indeed the error is gone) and when I update the driver, the error is back. Also, after the update (during booting the computer, it says it was successful), the update is still listed under the System Update Tool, indicating it actually didn't install (see below). However, just trying it again, doesn't result in a different result. Does anyone have a suggestion what could be going on?(I think the bios update, which just a few days back became available, is related to certain security problems that Intel was having...)

Hope someone have seen this and found a way of fixing it. The Thinkpad Yoga 14 was bought new from BestBuy, with Windows 10 already installed. A few days ago, after I finally allow Windows 10 to install the "update", the battery started to "disappear", ie the power icon has a "X" and with a message "No battery is detected". The battery driver has a June 21 date, a months after the purchase. So this must be the driver brought in by the Win10 update (note: this is not from Win7, Win8 etc to Win10, but an update of Win10). Removing and reinstalling battery driver did not fix the problem as the same driver is installed again. I also cannot roll back the version as Windows does not show any previous version. I also cannot "restore" as Windows does not actually restore the system: Windows shows the update still installed even after it was "restored" to a state prior to the "update". I also tried to install Lenovo's new power management driver. No help either.  Any suggestions, other than to returning the computer? This is for my son. He'll start his school right now! Thanks!

Hello everyone, Lenovo System Update keep asking me to install version 10.0.56.3002 of Intel Management Engine Firmware on my ThinkPad Yoga 12 (Type 20DK) running Windows 10 Pro x64. Once I install the update, a cmd window pops up for a fraction of a second, then my PC restarts. However, the installation seems to fail as System Update keeps asking me to install the update again after the reboot. First, to make this absolutely clear: there isn't even an entry in Device Manager, as in "there's an unknown device". The touch screen completely disappeared as a device. Nothing detects it. Even the WriteIt app cannot start because it cannot detect touch or pen inputs. Second, this happened approximately two months ago. Since many updates installed then I cannot tell after which one specifically it happened. There were Windows updates but also a ThinkPad BIOS v1.38 update through Lenovo Vantage. After that the touch screen hasn't work and is still not working. That's two months. Unfortunately I cannot rollback updates through Lenovo Vantage (and anywhere else for that matter). I can only rollback Windows updates but there are so many, it'll be very time-consuming and inconvenient. I don't want to sound whiny and entitled but I still cannot understand how is it possible to have this issue for so long without any available resolution. Basically I cannot use the touch screen of a device which main selling point was the touchscreen. Is there a way to do a hardware diagnostic that will tell me more? I tried browsing through the BIOS but couldn't find anything. I doubt it is a hardware issue because I've always been very protective with my machine and haven't abused its flexibility in any way. It's mostly staying as a normal laptop on my desk with the ocassional change of posture to bring the touchscreen closer to me. I really hope something can be do... Read more

Hi All, I foolishly ran the Lenovo software update tool and one of the updates that installed was battery firmware v1.13. The update failed part way through and ever since my battery is having an existential crisis - I know it's plugged in and 100% charged but it reads 0% (or sometimes a red X) and the machine shuts down when AC power is removed. Being out of warranty the phone line people just keep trying to sell me a new battery and have no ideas on how to fix the existing one. I've tried the firmware update multiple times but with no joy. Also tried sourcing previous versions of the firmware which doesn't work. My battery was not one of those listed for recall. Latest and best suggestion was that it may be a motherboard issue and I could confirm by plugging in a different battery to see if it works - with absolutely no suggestion who would let me borrow their battery and plug it into my possibly killer machine. Has anyone else had a similar problem and found a fix? Is anyone based in Perth, Western Australia and want to let me experiment with their battery? {you crazy fool!} Does anyone know how to contact an actual Lenovo person rather than the useless call centre (1800 041 267 from Australia, seemingly connecting to Malaysia or Thailand judging by the accents)? Consumer law in Australia would suggest these guys owe me a new battery regardless of warranty status but I don't know how I can force the issue if I can't even speak to them???&... This happened to me today. The solution is to restart the computer and enter the BIOS.  Then use the arrow keys to move to the config tab, then down to the power option, hit enter, scroll down to the disable built-in battery, hit enter, then follow dirctions on the right.  You will unplug the power cord to shut down the computer and when you plug it back in and turn it back on the battery will be recognized.  if not , try the process again as it took me two tries.  hope this helps.

I am dual booting Windows 10 and Linux (Ubuntu 17.10). I was on Windows 10 when I was updating my battery firmware using the Lenovo Battery Firmware Update Tool. It prompted me to update my battery and I confirmed and clicked next. Immediately, my screen turned black. I waited 10 minutes and then did a force shutdown on the computer by holding the power button. Now my battery won't charge. It is an official 55+ Lenovo battery and last week Ubuntu's acpi said that the battery was at 67% capacity and could run on battery for an hour and a half at full charge. Now all of a sudden, after the failed firmware update, my battery will not charge: whether the laptop is on in Windows 10, on in Ubuntu, or while the computer is turned off and plugged. When I do connect the AC cord the battery indicator blinks with a steady green, to a stready orange, to a rapid orange, and then off within a span of ~10 seconds. I have tried deleting the battery drivers on Windows and restarting and it does not work. I have also tried to update the battery firmware again using the Lenovo Update Firmware Tool but it repeatedly gives me the same error "The tool was unable to update the battery firmware due to an internal error." I have also updated to the latest BIOS to no avail.

Hi TomHG Which is the full model number of your machine? What I would try to do first is try to update the BIOS of your computer and the power related drivers just in case. But the message that is showing the problem on the BIOS (before Windows boot) it is not nice. I would try tp update the drivers with the following tools- Windows Update- Lenovo System Update- Install Lenovo Settings and Lenovo Companion.- Check on Lenovo Support site the driver for your model. If after updating the BIOS and power drivers of your computer the problem remains there, I will recommend to contact the Lenovo Support Center. If you are still under warranty Lenovo should fix it by replacing any part. Regards

Hello everybody, I know another thread with similar problems here, booting three times ect .... but not with the new specific problem, this one seems to be new to me and I hope for a solution without the technician having to change the Hardware Motherboard. I had the original ME firmware and now an update was made by Lenovo Vantage, but this unfortunately did not work properly and led to the following: 1. at boot the "Strg P" entry has disappeared 2. in the Bios the entry with ME Firmware Version is empty 3. ME is shown as deactivated or not present in Hardware Manager, The result is that you can no longer perform flash if ME is no longer present in the system. 4. When restarting or reactivating, it will take about 35 seconds for the Lenovo logo to be displayed and the system will start up  this is all very frustrating, i hope that there will be a software solution, or maybe someone knows a solution .... Thanks all for support.....

Hello, is it possible to update the Lenovo Ultra Dock Pro to the latest version without a Windows Operating System? https://support.lenovo.com/de/en/documents/ht081248 A bootable ISO for this would be perfect. I use Linux as Operating System installed on a T440p, so a Windows based update is not possible for me. Thanks in advance! Best regrads, Michael

Hi, Lenovo recently released a firmware update in the Lenovo Vantage app for the thunderbolt port on my 5th Gen X1 but the update seems to fail. Also tried the update by downloading it direct from Lenovo support website but getting the same error.  Any suggestions? Cheers
