Windows update making my comp freeze on black screen on restart

Q: Windows update making my comp freeze on black screen on restart

Hey there, any help is much appreciated

After a lot of headache, ive realised that updating anything through windows update that requires a restart causes my computer screen to go black after the windows loading bar on startup. If i leave the computer for about 10 minutes it eventually opens the login screen and works as normal until i restart it again.

I can fix the problem by putting my windows disk in and doing a system restore, but i want to fix the problem properly!, i would like to be able to update.

i have done a myriad of things to clean the computer including registry cleaning, optimising startup list, physically cleaning dust out of the box and fans etc as initialy i thought it was a hardware problem before i noticed it was windows update causing it.

thanks in advance for any help,

p.s some system specs if needed

Intel Core 2 6600 @ 2.40GHz

Preferred Solution: Windows update making my comp freeze on black screen on restart

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I'll give anyone who reads this as much info as possible.

I have a desktop build that contains these parts:
ASRock > N68-S UCC
200gb hdd (shows up as about 186 gb)
4 gb ddr ram (motherboard only supports ddr2)
Amd Phenom II 3.1GHZ dual core cpu
some sort of forward slot that has one usb 2.0 port with media card slots (sd card, micro sd, smart card ect)
a dvd (aka cd drive) by sony
nvidia gt 520 (silent model with a HUGE heatsink)
550 watt psu

Here's the deal... The sound was not working. I would plug in headphones/speakers and no joy from any ports. NO sound what so ever. So I opened it up, and there is absolutely no reason why it would not be working except there is no cable for "hd audio" and that there's no cables on usb power 2 and some random "fan" all on the motherboard. I also found these weird connectors, as if a cable had been stripped from the cable connector. This is an older computer, I don't know its full history but it was very weird.

So I tried resetting the cables. Powered it back on, and no joy. The video was gone. Acer model 15" reports that there is no signal, and then goes to an amber light on the power light.

I'm afraid I have killed my motherboard. I took it out of the casing, did the bread setup and tried it with different ram and a brand new 350 watt PSU. No joy again. Tried clearing the CMOS... looked for obvious motherboard damage (found none) all parts in good condition* except for one thing............... Read more

Recently my computer has been freezing at certain times. I've come to think it must be a problem either with my hardware or my windows, but I thought it would be best to get more expert info instead of diving head first into the problem.
The main problem that occurs is the random freezing. My computer will suddenly freeze, and I would have to manually restart it in order for it to work again. I have noticed that the frequency of the freezes start to decrease after a few manual restarts, via power button, but it can still tend to freeze later during use. Sometimes, the screen will freeze and after a few seconds will be followed by a grayish/black screen, and then a restart.
At certain times when I recover from a restart, Windows will provide an error report:
Problem signature:

First of all , as a newbie here I'd like to say hello to everybody on this forum and also apologize if this is posted in the wrong section since defacto my problem involves black screen and not a tipical blue screen.

Computer is custom built, all new parts, 5 months old. I became aware of this problem about 2 months after.

My system specs:

i7 4930k - overclocked (bios reset to factory settings later after problem became continuous annoyance)
Corsair H110i GT
Asus Sabertooth x79 mobo
16 Gb DDR3 Corsair XMS3 1600MHz
Evga GeForce GTX 970 SC
Corsair -CS850M 850w , PSU

So this problem has been bugging me for some 3 months now.

Basically what would happen is computer would freeze, if there was sound playing atm, sound would freeze in a "bzzzzz" fashion (continuously looping), 2 seconds later screen would turn black and the computer would restart.
I have disabled later "restart on failure" feature, hoping I would get some information on screen when it happens, but sadly now it just stays on black screen without resetting.

This happens completely random, and so it happens that it is always during some not intensive computing (idle, web browsing, youtube playing, sometimes when working in 3d modeling program -3ds Max).
On the other side, it never happened when computer was doing some intensive 3d rendering or gaming - coincidence or not, I don't know yet...

Biggest problem now is that I'm still unable to recreate the event. I've trie... Read more

Hello Everyone

Recently my HDD was replaced in my pc due to it was faulty (couldn't boot).
I got a new one and redownloaded my games, but now i have a decrease in FPS in most games and the newer ones (Rome 2, AC4 etc.) have large FPS drops and crashes to a black screen with flickering sound after a few minutes. This forces me to restart my pc manually. I initailly thought it was due to overheating, and i cleaned my computer, which cured some of the FPS drops, but the games still crash after a few minutes.
Does anybody know why this happens?
I have attached a zip folder containing the results from: DxDiag and MSINFO32.

Any help would be appritiatied, thanks!

So i had to reinstall Windows 8 on my PC, and as usual i install Drivers and such first. Normally it worked, now after i restart the Computer to finish the Driver Updates, i get Black Screen after Windows 8 loading Screen. Can someone help?

A:AMD Driver Update. Black Screen after Restart.

If the harddrive is busy/active youll have to wait it out.

Sometimes theres allot to do and unfortunately its doing it while there is no display making you believe something's wrong.

If the harddrive is calm, and there is still no video, then you'll have to start the computer in safe mode.

Depending on your laptop this may be easy or difficult depending on how new your laptop is and the boot speed..

Get into safe mode and uninstall your video drivers, then reboot.

Safe mode is usually entered by repeatedly pressing F8 during boot, but on newer systems it moves too fast..

Others have has success wailing on the spacebar during boot causing windows to respond as if a boot error and gives you the diagnostics option and safemode.

I have a new (to me) computer and had to install windows xp pro sp2 from a 2 yr+ old disc, and set automatic updates to download but not install. I went about installing and tweaking programs, getting updates and dl's etc. I did so much that I'd hate to use a restore point, 'cuz in a previous infestation it did not work. When I try to shutdown it says installing 1 of 87 updates, says it is shutting down windows and freezes, on the 2 or 3 times it did not freeze, it says it has 85 updates to install. went to windows update site and I think I installed 34 updates, but not sure as I've never done it that way and no restart was necessary. not sure it is relevant but my usb mouse keeps freezing up between1-90 min into session, tried reinstalling drivers but it keeps hanging when it comes to updating registry. I have a backup PS/2 mouse. I also use soulseek 156c client that, altjough I haven't used it in a week or so kept requiring me to reset modem every 1-6 hrs, but since not using it this problem has gone away. I've used WinASO Reg. Optimizer, but went and restored all the way back to its setup, then used Mcafee to clean registry. I use the entire mcafee suite and also use spybot s&d. I hope this is enough information (and not too much) and would like to send TIA to whoever will take my case. http://www.techsupportforum.com/imag...ies/1-grin.gif

A while back I downloaded a movie to watch. Some flash player install file came up when I tried to open it, and of course it was a virus. Since then, I get search redirects, have vitamax erectile ads on every ad box on pages, am unable to update AVG or Spybot S&D or Malwarebyte programs, receive a script error when AVG tries to run, receive clean scans when I do run them (just ran Malwarebyte full scan 5 minutes ago, found 2 infections in 114000 files), am unable to update or load Flash onto Firefox, get occasional lockups when launching IE 7, and most recently I freeze up at a black screen or at the log in page on Windows startup. I am typing this in a Safe Mode launch of my PC.

Attached is the DDS file. I also ran Hijack This and ComboFix if those logs are needed as well. Thanks for any and all help, I would like to avoid having to reformat my stuff.

Ok 116 error is caused by your Graphics card.
First thing to do is update your drivers from the NVIDIA website.

If BSODs continue Try HDD tests,

Do you overclock your video card?

Hey all,
I am having problems with the screen freeing when running multiple windows (Chrome, office etc etc). When I try to swap between windows, I get a freeze and I am unable to do anything.
The cursor can be seen moving around the screen but has no effect in any area. The Windows Key doesn't ppear, nor can I tab into another programme.
If I try and start task manager to see which program is causing this, it will not appear over the frozen image.
Is there a way of telling from an event log what program is failing?

I am not sure what's wrong, but I have uninstall nvidia drivers that gave me problems ie. 257.21, 196.21....etc. I am currently using 195.62. I am certain that it was a VGA driver problem, because it never happened again, till I decided to remove windows internet explorer and it did the black screen thing again. It restarts and instead of showing windows splash screen it shows a black screen. When I am at the black screen I can't do anything, I will have manually restart and when it boots up the second time it will load windows. It's ____ me off. I hope someone can help me here, and I appreciate it. Atm I am gonna reinstall IE 8 and let's hope for the best.

I just hit my reset button, get message to do startup repair or start windows normally.

The last update was after I did a full reinstall of Win10 (not an upgrade from 8.1 like last time) on an SSD drive and it was working fine.
Suddenly, as I was downloading a game, it started working REALLY slowly, the screen turned black and it restarted (so no BSOD that I can tell).

The laptop I have is an ASUS g74, I purchased the copy of windows 8 from microsoft's site, upgrading from windows 7 pro. I opted to keep all my personal files/apps because the programs it warned me as being incompatible were random games and such.

I googled this problem, and it seemed fairly common months ago when windows 8 first came out on dell/HP laptops. It worked flawlessly when I first upgraded and booted up fine but once I restarted I couldn't see anything other than the screen occasionally flickering brighter and darker.

However, if I plug my laptop up to a TV with an HDMI cable I can see everything on the TV. It's just the laptop screen that is blank. I'm not sure where to go from here, thanks in advance for any help!

THis morning, I ran Ccleaner (had some reg. errors, backed up reg. then "fixed" them).

I updated Malwarebytes but I noticed it got stuck after I hit "finish", so I manually shut off my computer (I didn't want to lose my IE page). I waited a few seconds and restarted. It came up fine, so I double clicked Malwarebytes-my pointer FROZE and had a box of verticle lines hovering over it. So, since my mouse was frozen, I manually shut off, again.

THIS time, when I restarted, the Toshiba logo did not come on but my computer automatically restarted. It restarted 3 times. I thought it may have overheated so I manually shut off and waited for 30 min to cool off.

Now, it is stuck in a loop of restarting. The Toshiba logo does not come up, nor will windows begin. I can not get into bios OR f8 for safe mode. I tried a windows disc that I have, but it will not load from cd, either.

Any ideas???

my computer is a Toshiba Tecra M3; 1.8 mhtz; 1 gb RAM; I think it's dual core; Windows XP Professional with NO BOOT DISK or reinstall disk available. (I tried to use a disk from my son's computer, but to no avail.)

Any help would be appreciated as this is my home business computer. It has ALL of my cattle information on it and I have NO BACKUP. :-(

RecaP: I CAN NOT go into safe mode, can not access BIOS, nor will this restart loop go further than a black screen.

So on my computer, something strange happens when I uninstall UxStyle. It has broken my Windows install once and it has done it again. The first time, I kept on doing system restores to see what was the problem that made that black screen. After trial and error, I narrowed it down to UxStyle. So, I deleted Windows 8 and installed Windows 7, which is what I wanted in the first place. Now, I decided to triple-boot Windows 7 with Vista and 8.1, and it has succeeded. I reinstalled UxStyle thinking it was just a problem with my old Windows install, and then uninstalled it after a few days since I felt like the regular look was better. I rebooted Windows and the same effect happened.

So, I would like to know if I can get and replace those three patched DLLs with unpatched DLLs for Windows 8.1. Could I just change the broken ones to have .old next to them and then place the ones I get here there? Also, would sfc /scannow work?

A:UxStyle Black Flashing Post-Windows Update Black Screen

Hello lct01a, and welcome to Eight Forums.

A sfc /scannow will attempt to repair any modified or corrupted system files, so that would be a good first step.

I built the computer myself about 3 months ago, and have had random BSOD's since I booted it up the first time. I did memtest for 2 passes with no errors, and did Driver Verifier last night with a BSOD this morning, dunno if it was because of Verifier though. I recently had a BSOD about 3 weeks ago and had to re-install Windows because it couldn't repair and I didn't have a System Restore. It seems your video card or its drivers are the ultimate cause of these BSODs. I do notice the nVidia drivers are still a few months behind, so you might try downloading the latest package from here: Drivers - Download NVIDIA Drivers

While it's worth a shot, I honestly doubt it will help. I'd expect a card replacement is necessary. See if you can return the card under the warranty, or at least test a different card in your system.

12 downloadsi need help trying to figure out whats going on with 1 of my computers... i came home a copule of months ago and the kids comp was off.. i thought it was just the power supply so i changed it... then there was still nothing so i figured its the motherboard... so i have another computer that i took the good working drives and ram out and placed it into a different one a little older than the one that stopped. but now when i boot it up and you play on it for a little while the computer freezes and the screen freaks out and you have to manually turn it off and restart and then it works and after another little while it does it again.... I was thinking that maybe it might be the video card or the hard drive... the hard drive is the one out of the other computer and the video card in on this mother board.... any suggestions i have a pic of the screen too .Thanks

I've just built a brand new computer. When I start it up for the first time, everything spins up but it freezes at the "Press Tab..." or "Press Delete to enter setup..." It's frozen and no key presses respond.

If I repeatedly press Tab or Delete as the computer is booting up, it goes into the POST screen and locks up after "Initializing USB Controller... Done"

While working inside the case, I had my bare arms resting on the metal edges. Would that prove sufficient to ground myself?

The specs are:

A couple of days ago I needed to use Skype and my Logitech Webcam Pro 9000, both of which I hadn't used in a while. Skype asked to run an update, which I allowed. The Logitech Webcam also asked to run an update, which I also allowed. Everything seemed to work fine. That evening, I shut down my monitor but left the computer on. Next morning, turned on monitor, which showed vertical stripes and the screen was frozen. Rebooted computer. Black screen came up indicating computer did not shut down properly and requested to run repair and restore. After this was done, computer rebooted and all was fine. There was however an error msg on the desktop screen: "Runner file name Logitech Desktop Messenger. exe lacks a '-' (the app id separator)"

Closed error message. Went to Logitech website. Said to try and delete Logitech Desktop Messenger from the control panel (uninstall). Tried to uninstall and received msg: Set-up exe has stopped working. Could not uninstall Desktop Messenger. Logitech site said to then go to msconfig and uncheck it ... Read more

My wife had almost the exact same setup for Skype calls a while back.

Have you tried the LDM Removal program they made because it was such a poorly written mess?

Let us know if that works or if you have already tried it.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks in advance for any answers.

When I shutdown my computer (Windows 10 Pro) sometimes I receive the normal shutdown screen and the PC shuts down no problem. But the majority of the time, the computer either freezes (Mouse stops and the spinning dots in the middle stop) and I have to shutdown via the power button or as soon as the shutdown screen appears the PC will restart. Note the PC does not freeze or restart unless I try to shutdown the PC.

Now I have gone into Event Viewer and when it does freeze or restart, it states that a kernel-power event ID 41 Task Category 63 critical error has occurred. I have had Windows 7 mainly running the PC and just recently updated it again after the same restart or freeze issue occurring before. Whether it is a clean install or a upgrade install it still results in freezing or restarting.

With Windows 7, the computer had no restart or freezing issue.(Only Windows 10 seems to cause the freezing or restart)
The CPU is overclocked to 4.5Ghz(Temperature is not hot, stays under 50 degrees Celsius)
Whether the CPU is overclocked or not, the freezing or restarting still happens.
Currently the CPU is running at default.

I have tried to restart in safe mode and shutdown from there, still freezes or restarts
I have tried to limit startup items and services through msconfig.
I have removed the overclock and cleared the BIOS settings back to default multiple times.
I have tried a clean install of Windows 10 Pro.

I really want to... Read more

Hey guys,

Tried searching didnt find anything.

After windows update my computer hangs at the shutting down screen when I restart it, I get the to the windows flag but then the screen goes blank and I never get to the login screen.

This is the second windows update this has happened on. Luckily I can get into safemode and do a system restore (which also hangs at the shut down screen, but works when I do a hard reset).

You guys have any ideas?

Click the check boxes next to Application and System located under Select log to query on the upper left

Under Select type to list on the right click the boxes next to Error and Warning Note: If running Windows Vista or Windows 7 also click the box next to Critical (not XP).

Under Number or date of events select Number of events and type 20 in the box next to 1 to 20 and click Run

Once it finishes it will display a log file in notepad

Hi all,First post!  My Dad's Lenovo laptop goes to a black screen when starting up, so is unusable.I haven't seen it in the flesh yet but have started to research things for him and have found that 'black screen' shows up quite a lot for Windows 10 and Lenovo PCs! We were so impressed with my Dad's PC I've ended up with the same model myself:Lenovo YOGA 500 Convertible Laptop, Intel Core i7, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, 15.6" Touch Screen. Also labelled as: Yoga 500-15IBD Laptop (ideapad)  I see some people mentioning hardware failures and others device driver problems with the graphic card etc. but haven't read a definite cause/fix for this so far. I've just found this recent critical BIOS update for this PC which mentions the black screen problem:Software name: BDCN63WW Version 63[Important updates] Fix Win 10 lid close black screen issue.http://support.lenovo.com/gb/en/products/Laptops-and-netbooks/Yoga-Series/yoga-500-15ibd/downloads/D...I haven't seen this mentioned in the forums? Has anyone else used this?If the PC always boots to a black screen I'll obviously have trouble installing this! I'm hoping that it will boot in Safe Mode or I'm going to have some trouble installing it?! I don't know whether to install the BIOS update on my own machine which is running fine - I think I'll wait until I see my Dad's laptop first which will be in a few weeks. Has anyone had any experience of this BIOS update or other comments on this?Thanks. &nb... I'm still wondering about this... I've just updated the Lenovo Companion after seeing it mentioned in another thread. It looks like this s/w is supposed to scan the PC and recommend Lenovo updates - critical and nice to have ones. Initially the Companion was showing a critical update for Lenovo SHAREit and a recommended one for my BIOS. It says I'm currently on BDCN28WW and offered something like v61 and not the 63 I mentioned in my first post? After letting it update SHAREit and re-scanning the BIOS update is no longer being offered and still shows me on v28 ??? I'm not sure I trust this 'Companion' app!My laptop seems to be running fine so I don't want to break it updating the BIOS if it's not required. For all I know my Dad's broken one may be broken because it upgraded?! Does anyone else use/trust the Companion app?And has anyone else seen it change it's mind on recommended BIOS updates? Thanks.

I've cleaned out the computer several times to the point where no infections or such show up. I also got a cooling fan for my comp because I thought overheating might be the problem. It has happily been a few years since I've needed help from this forum, but here I am again...
The problem: starting yesterday, my laptop started freezing up (all apps/buttons frozen, mouse cursor/arrow can move but no functionality with clicking, no response from cntrl-alt-delete) followed by the dreaded Blue Screen flashing (too fast to read all the info) and the computer restarts. Starting normally incurs the same problem (fine for 10ish minutes then crash and restart). Crash does not seems related to running a particular program as it has happened while using different programs are just the desktop. Starting in safe mode with networking (using as we speak) seems to be ok.
I ran a cleaner/fix-it utility (cc-cleaner) but still have the same problem.
This seems to have started after installing the recommended automatic windows updates for my pc yesterday, but I'm not actually certain of the correlation. Computer is also just getting old...
How do I troubleshoot this?

After updating the OEM installed Vista to Windows 10 the laptop worked perfectly fine for about a month.  The recent Win10 updates came down and the machine wanted to do a reboot from which it never came back up. All I see is black screen. I tried to boot from DVD and USB Stick nothing works. The laptop recognizes the USB stick as a San Disk though. The BIOS startup screen comes up and I was able to navigate to the boot devices and boot order options.  Even after choosing the boot from DVD or USB disk drive option and disabling all other boot devices won't boot from anything at all. There is no option called 'Secure Boot' in the bios settings to disable.  Not sure what to do at this point. Please help!!!!

Alright so I really don't know a whole bunch about computers. I have an Alienware m17x R3 that had windows 7 but updated to the free Windows 10. After the update my computer loads up until right before login with no cursor and a blinking underscore or dash. I have the windows 7 disk that came with my computer and tried to do a clean install but after its done the computer restarts and goes back into the black screen with no cursor. I can't get into safe mode and really don't know what to do.

I was doing a update. I'm not too sure what was in the update, I think something having to do with a major essentials update and I think a minor update having to do with the video card. The update ended up failing and asked me to restart the computer. I did so and now my desktop is completely black. I can't see anything other than the cursor. I can move the cursor but nothing else. I tried hitting CTR+ALT+DEL to start up task manager but nothing happens. I restart and it recommends me to do launch repair but that also ends up failing as well. After that is finished, nothing is fixed and I'm still at a black screen. I don't know what caused this black screen nor do I know how to fix. Are there any good PC/tech message boards where someone can help me with this problem?

A customer asked me to upgrade three PCs from XP to win7. I purchased three windows 7 pro licenses.
The machines are Asus P4 3Ghz with 1 or 2 Gb RAM, 160Gb hard drives and PCI-E Radeon X550 SE DVI/VGA 256Mb graphics cards.
The first one has 2Gb RAM, installed without a problem and is running well.
I've installed win7 three times on the second one which has 1Gb RAM and each time hit the same black screen issue.
Win7 installs correctly. The first time, I installed Office 2007, printers and other applications, checked all was well and left it for the users. I did not apply any windows updates as I expected them to run automatically. (Same with the first machine which did not have a problem)
They rang the next day to say they had a black screen on the second PC.
When I looked at it I found it would switch on, but after the BIOS - nothing, no disk activity. The caps lock led would go on and off with the key, but Ctrl-Alt-Del immediately restarted the machine. F8 had no effect. BIOS access is fine.
I ran memtest and a disk test but found no problems.
I restarted with the win7 disk startup repair and tried going back to checkpoints. It was clear from the checkpoints that windows updates had happened overnight.
However, despite going back to each checkpoint up to the first one, prior to any updates, I was still unable to start windows. The restores gave me 0x8000fff failures and the message "a patch is preventing the system from starting - system restore error 0x490"
Next I replaced ... Read more

A:black screen after windows 7 update

Being as you cannot access windows you will need to do a full format, you have damaged files or registry items.  This happens at times when upgrading from XP or lower to 7, not sure of the cause it could be the lack of ram on that machine.  I have had problems on a few with only 1 gig!

Yikes a clean Windows install on my P70 is turning out to be an adventure. Everything was going fine until the the Windows anniversary update and now when Windows boots up the 4K 17" laptop display is completely black (blank). Anyone know how I can ressolve this? If I plug in an external monitor into the HDMI port I see the laptop output on the external monitor but the laptop's LCD display is completely black. It does not even let me change the resolution of the laptop display as it just shows the laptop resolution as 640X480 and even that is greyed out. It seems Windows is completely incapable of recognizing the Laptop's 17" display.

Hey there,

Heres a little back story just in case any of this matters... I recently purchased an Alienware m11x from a friend. It was in good condition and was running fine, another friend asked if he could install Ubuntu on it, he re-partitioned the drive one half windows 7 and the other half Ubuntu... no problems there was working fine. After about a week I decided I wanted get rid of Ubuntu, I attempted to un-partition the drive and get rid of Ubuntu... in the process I was left with a error.

Next I got a copy of Windows 8 which my college provides and put it on a USB and booted the computer from there and had windows 8 running.... Everything worked fine until I restarted the computer, after restart I would get stuck in a black screen where my mouse pointer was the only thing visible... I've attempted so many things and nothing has been working, I'm not the best with computers but I'm learning...

Does anyone know how I can start fresh with windows and avoid the black screen, and maybe eventually re-install the original Alienware software???

If you could respond soon that would be great, if I solved this problem I would be beyond happy!

Since I updated my Windows 7 64-bit PC, it only shows a Black Screen after the Splash Screen. I only got it away by uninstalling the driver of my AMD Radeon HD 7950 graphics card but when I install the most recent version, the black screen reappears. But I need a graphics driver! I already uninstalled all the Windows patches without any success. Unfortunately, the restore point function in the OS was somehow deactivated, so I can't restore it.
The only thing left of the update is the Microsoft Office SP1. But this is just an application. It surely can't effect the video output before login, can it?
