T440s battery duration and display brightness changed after reinstalling windows 7

Q: T440s battery duration and display brightness changed after reinstalling windows 7

Hi there.I'm new here but old to IBM/Lenovo I'm writing you because I'm experiencing a challenge with my t440s and I'm getting crazy.About one month ago, I performed a clean reinstall of Windows 7 pro on my t440s, also installing all the most updated drivers from Lenovo support website (in particular the power manager, hotkeys, display drivers, etc... Nowmy battery duration, with the same power manager settings, has dropped from an average duration of 5 hours to around 1:30-2 h. (normal websites browsing, email checking, nothing "too much"). I have performed a battery reset in the battery management section of the power manager, but nothing changed. When the display brightness is set to 0, the screen is actually still on (not so bright) but still on, and it's a way too much for me if I use my t440s during the night time. Before reinstalling the OS, setting the display brightness to 0 = black screen, like switched off. Hope someone can help me with this situation. Thanks a lot and wish you all a super weekend.Andrea

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hello all,

I have still a problem after my installation of Windows 10 last year. Everything is working so far, but I am not able change the brightness of the display anymore.

The function keys are working and also the display on the left hand upper side appears but the brightness does not change.

Maybe someone can help me to solve this.

Thanks for your answers.

Hello all --  I recently purchased a Y910 and seem to have a few hardware issues. Out-of-the-box, things worked great, after taking a Windows 10 update, a few things seemed to have changed... I can no longer changed my display brightness. Nor does it auto dim depending on the lighting. I read up on how to fix this, and someone suggested switching to the generic Windows driver. That does solve the issue, however high-resolution and secondary monitors don't work so well.... Also, it would seem my battery is not last terribly long, like an hour and a half tops. Not surprising, if it's doing silly things like running the display at 100%, and potentually other power hungry things, then it's going to drain the battery quickly. Any suggestions? Is there a way to tell if it's on the list for the next Windows update?

On my Windows XP computer, Windows Explorer has a strange quirk in displaying duration of media files.

This quirk is the same for MP3 or Windows Media Video files. The quirk is, if a file has a duration of 2:34, duration shows as 0:02; if duration is 9:12, it shows as 0:09.; in other words, duration shows as 0:0x, where x is the number of minutes of the duration. I have one podcast that is 2 hrs. 37 min. 26 sec., and it displays as 2:37, instead of 2:37:26

On wav and flv files, although Windows Explorer displays a duration column, no duration at all appears. (I have unchecked duration in the display options, and that removes the blank duration column, then rechecked it, which returns the blank column.)

For AVI files, WE displays the correct duration.

I don't believe this is a flaw in the files. Recently, I purchased an album from Amazon and downloaded it, and the new files displayed in the same way. Also, I can transfer the files to another computer, and the proper duration displays in WE.

When I play the file (typically in Windows Media Player but also in FooBar), the duration shows on the player.

Here is a screenshot of WE showing a folder of MP3 files:

http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo...UPxGJ3A83U0erw

Here is a list of the five tracks (11-15): track #, displayed duration, actual duration:

Track 11 - 0:05 - 5:17
Track 12 - 0:03 - 3:48
Track 13 - 0:04 - 4:47
Track 14 - 0:02 - 2:46
Track 15 - 0:04 - 4:00

A:[SOLVED] Duration of media files does not display in Windows Explorer

If your regional settings are set to not display seconds, it won't show seconds in the duration column. But it should affect AVI files as well; it does on my system.
Control Panel | Regional and Language Options
Check that the selection is correct.
If the Time sample doesn't display seconds, you can edit the way it displays:
Click the Customize... button, then the Time tab
In the time format box, add :ss after the minutes (assuming you use : as your time separator):
h:mm:ss tt for example will display time like this 9:52:05 AM

wav files don't have the duration saved in their properties. I'm guessing flv files don't either.

I bought the laptop two months ago. The battery can't be removed. When the battery level is about 40% (about 2 hrs of charge available) I suddenly get the message that the battery is almost empty and that the computer is going to shut down if it isn't plugged to a recharger.I checked the HP Support wizard and the battery seems to be alright... still the problem remains.

Hello, how much is duration expectancy before battery must be recharged for this model? I know it depends of what are you working, but my battery is empty after little more than one hour of usual work (internet browsing, no multimedia). I am on balanced power profile and not on full performance. Nothing working in a background. I even installed SSD. This was the case with the first battery when I bought my device five years ago and today I bought new battery with even more capacity and the short time of usage still remains.

Do you have screen brightness set to 100%? The screen is the biggest drain on the battery.Try calibrating the new battery so it can get a sense of run time.http://acer.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/11574/~/how-do-i-calibrate-my-battery%3FIf you upgraded to Windows 8, you will have to go through settings to get to Safe mode.Keep it plugged in until you start Safe mode.http://www.digitalcitizen.life/5-ways-boot-safe-mode-windows-8-windows-81

So I have come across an issue here that I was wondering if anyone had an answer to... I am pretty sure this issue is intrensic to the windows operating system or internet explorer itself (though mozilla seems to have the same issue)...

Is there a place in windows XP where you can set how long a tooltip will display for a given item in internet explorer? This seems to be a function of 'mouseover' or some sort of firing code that activates if the cursor rests over an icon or text item with the title or alt property set. I would like to lengthen the amount of time from its default time (10 sec?) to about 30 seconds before it goes away... This is the same tooltip you see when using the title or alt for HTML code. I am 99.9% sure that this cannot be controlled by HTML and I do not have the option of using scripting languages (though I would like to, it would make it a lot easier if I could find a "duration" parameter or registry location that I could set this item at.

The best way to demonstrate this issue is to hover over an item that displays a tooltip, and letting the cursor sit there until the tooltip disappears (currently the TSG banner at the top does this).

Hi everyone, I'm trying to figure out if I have a unique problem, or whether this is a broader T440s problem. Occasionally, especially when my T440s has gone to hibernation from sleep, I cannot turn on the computer unless I plug it into the wall. That is to say, when I hit the power button when the computer is unplugged, NOTHING happens. I've tried holding the power button down, pressing it repeatedly, removing the external battery and then pressing the startup button, etc.  If I plug the computer into the wall, it starts up fine and shows that there is sufficient battery life. This does not happen consistently, and is difficult to repeat. For example, the computer went into sleep the night before traveling. I tried to start it on a plane flight (domestic, thank god, so it wasn't a huge issue, but if it had been international that would have been a disaster) and it simply would not start. Later, on a train, I was able to plug it in and it started with no problems and showed plenty of battery life. I then put it into sleep, it went into hibernate, and I was able to start it up without being plugged into the wall when I returned home. Has anyone else encountered something similar? Are there settings I can change, or should I have it sent in for repair (also, what on earth might cause this problem? Faulty power button?)

This is what happened to my T420.  Just about drove me nuts.  Since it would start in one power mode but not the other that proved that it couldn't be the button, right?  Another mod with more sense suggested replacing the keyboard anyway.

It was the power button.  On careful visual inspection I could see that it was slightly depressed from normal.  Either partly shorted or high resistance.  Plugging in the AC mains must have changed the voltages just enough for it to work.  Sometimes, anyway.

Not saying this weird problem is what you're seeing - but it might be.

Good luck,
Z.

I have issue after upgrading from Win 7 to Win 10. The internal battery isn't detected and chargeable. Right clicking the battery icon on the notification area, I could see the following messages: Battery 1: This battery is not available for useBattery 2: 100% I installed ThinkPad setting dependency 3.0 and Lenovo Power Management Driver 1.67. They don't seem working. I launched Lenovo Power Manager, but no longer able to see status of both internal and external batteries. I was able to use the internal Battery 1 when I unplug the external Battery 2. But after I depleted the battery 1, nothing seems to be useful in charging it and be usable again. Appreciate if there's any guidance here. Thank you.

My Windows 10 theme is dark and I have a dard desktop backround. When I open Windows File Explorer, it looks dimmed but within a few seconds gets brighter. It looks like brightness is increased when I open applications having while colors mostly. I turned off adaptive brightness and I'm using Performance power profile and still cannot get rid of this effect. Is that a hardware issue or some Windows 10 feature? Can it be disabled so I get bright colors always? Thank you.

Hi all, So, I installed windows 7 64bit on my T500 last night. I've downloaded the win 7 version of  the thinkvantage system update software and installed everything, powermanager and all.  The problem:When i am in High performance graphics mode, the display brightness doesn't change... ever. Function keys don't work, the power management slider doesn't work. It is very frustrating to say the least. My work around: (this is annoying but works)When in low graphics mode, the function keys DO work. I can change the brightness and then switch back to high performance graphics. It's really bizarre!  Does anyone know why this would be happening? I've got all the latest drivers from system update & tried reinstalling the hot key drivers with no luck. I've played with every power setting i can think of, nothing seems to change the screen brightness on high performance graphics. Suggestions welcome

Hi Dan, Do you have a setup.exe file located in the c:\program files\Lenovo\settingsdependency\power  folder, and if so, can you try running that and see if the problem goes away?     I should add, that it might just say Setup, and not actually say Setup.exe depending on your view settings, but run it anyway.

Hello,

My display brightness is too bright, and I'm having a hard time finding a way to darken it. I just installed Windows 7 32bit, as well as the latest NVIDIA driver for my NVIDIA GeForce FX 5950 Ultra graphics card, but after checking the NVIDIA site and communicating with their support through e-mail, I've confirmed that there's no NVIDIA Control Panel setting for Brightness when using a GeForce Fx 5 series card with Windows 7. My monitor itself is set to the minimum Brightness, 0, but that's never enough, as my screen is still extremely bright.

I was wondering if anyone knows of some sort of *software* for decreasing the brightness. I tried Googling it, but it seems difficult to pinpoint what I'm after in a search. I've only thus far found one program that, unfortunately, began at the current brightness level and can only go UP, not down.

Thanks!

Hi All, I just got my T440s a couple of weeks ago. I stupidly ordered it with only 4GB of RAM, thinking that I couple upgrade it myself if neccessary (and it would be much cheaper that way). Well it seems 4GB definately isn't enough for my needs, so I ordered another 4GB stick. I installed it, plugged the machine in and powered it up. And was met with the tone for a memory error. Probably the module isn't seated correctly, but I suppose it could be faulty. Anyway, you'll notice I said that I plugged it in before powering up. That means that the internal battery has been reactivated. I can confirm this because it will start (and give me the error) without being plugged in and without the external battery connected. So my problem is, how do I disable the internal battery again to remove or reseat the problem DIMM, since I can't get to the UEFI/BIOS configureation to disable it. Please help.

I have a T440s which I bought in July 2014. It is out of warranty. Lenovo companion reports my "primary" battery is "BAD" but says absolutey nothing else even though it reports a full charge. In fact the lenovo battery icon in the corner of my display shows battery is green and 100%. I'd like to understand whether this battery is bad in the sense that it should be removed from the computer immediately, or whether it has detected that it is no longer holding a full charge and could be left there. I am almost always at the desktop in a docking station so I don't need the full charge.

I don't understand why all they report is "Bad". Any suggestions as to how I might find more or if it is just reporting lower capacity and nothing more?

Also, it was kind of confusing which battery they meant when they said "primary" is bad. I could see an argument that either is the primary battery. Better to have used the terms integrated and removable. I removed the removable battery and reran the test to determine the primary battery is actually the integrated battery. I think the service person said the opposite.

The lenovo companion page that reports the battery is BAD has a link for more information and it goes to a general lenovo webpage that has nothing to do with support. They are trying to get me to apply for a lenovo credit card I think. Its so disgraceful how they dropped the ball on this one.

Dear Users, Since a few moments I am a (happy) owner of Lenovo?s new and business class model T440s. As I could find out, Lenovo is building in two different displays. On the one hand there are several model with aLG-DisplayModel: LP140WF1 (sp)(k1)P/N: 0C00349FRU: 04X0626 And the other from AUOModel: AUO B140HAN01.2FRU: 04X0436 (You can look up your displaymodel via BIOS, Everest or any related program) As far as I could find out in the world wide web there are several users reporting with a LG Display in their T440s that it is in quality inferior to the AUO Display. It seems that Lenovo is ready to replace the LG with an AUO display, sending out a tech. My question is what your experiences are and what can we, the owner of a  LG-Display, do?Is there a real quality gap between these two types of Display? My T440s, as i mentioned, has a LG Display. I can live with this one, if there are no great difference in the quality to the AUO Display. I am excited about your opinions. Thanks Fire

Don't sweat it. Both are absolutey huge upgrades over the TN panel. While the AUO is a bit better, its not worth the trouble. I have both and I like both. I did a compare on the same thread u heard about the issue.

Hi Everyone. One of our users battery stop working in his X1 Carbon. The warranty for the battery was expired, so we ordered a new battery for his X1 Carbon. Now the battery has arrived and i have installed the battery in the laptop. The battery works just fine, but Windows says "The battery is not detected. try reinstalling or recharging the battery to solve the problem.".Windows can't show if the laptop is charging and how much charg there is left in the battery. I have tried various things to find a solution, but nothing has worked yet. Links to things i had tried:https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/the-battery-is-not-detected-try-reinstalling-...I hope some fine folks can help me with this problem. ThanksBest regards - Martin RTX A/S

Hello,  I own a Lenovo Thinkpad T440s. While it was still under warranty (about 1month left) i contacted Lenovo support for a screen replacement. My old screen developed a dark spot. The display was replaced, but unfortunately, the new screen has issues with Image Retention and ghosting. This issue occured after the first few hours after i used it. We can presume that the replacement panel was deffective, but unfortunately the warranty expired in the process. Is there any way i can get this faulty screen? The screen is a 1080p IPS pannel The display exhibits the same issues as the one in this post:https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-S-Series-ThinkPad-Yoga/Re-Thinkpad-Yoga-ghosting-after-image-w...And thishttps://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-T400-T500-and-newer-T/T440s-Screen-Burn-In-Ghosting-Image-Pers...Thanks

I came home from work and discovered that my computer had been updated to Windows 10. Pretty underhanded move on Microshaft's part, but I thought I'd give it a whirl. Everything seems fine except now when I open Photoshop everything is so tiny I can't really work in the program anymore. Attached is a screenshot of what I mean.

I have checked the display settings and they are all correct for my monitors, but as you can see it's still to dang small. Also, whenever I hover over the menu items and try to choose one of them from the pop out list it flicks to the next menu item and I can't choose what I wanted. It's very annoying and I can't figure out what's wrong.

I joined just to ask about this, because if I can't find a solution I'm going back to Windows 7.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hello,

I work in a school and one of the pupils has done something to change the appearance of the display/changed the icon sizes. I have tried zooming out and quitting the zoom function, i have checked that the resolution is correct and i have tried pressing the Windows +/- keys all to no avail. I have also tried the pressing ctrl and scrolling the mouse wheel, again this does not help.

The desktop background is normal which might give a clue to the issue, i don't know. The main problem i have is that due to the size of the windows and icons it is not possible to navigate the explorer windows. Any idea of how to fix this? I took a screen grab of the desktop as it is-please see attachment.

Thanks in advance.

I have an M1330 with the Intel graphics and the LED backlit display. I'm running Windows Seven RC1. I cannot adjust the brightness of the display at all in Windows Seven - it doesn't matter if I use the FN+Up / FN+Down keys, the brightness option slider bar in Windows, or adjust it in bios. The back light is either at 100% brightness, or it's off completely.
Anybody know of a fix for this?

A:Why can't I adjust the display brightness on my M1330? (using Win7 & LED backlit display)

This is a beta operating system - presumably the problem will be fixed before late October when WIn 7 is released.  For now, you cannot expect a manufacturer to support an OS that has yet to be released.

I've been having some issues with dual display with a T440s and a 40A2009US Ultra Dock. OS is Windows 7 64 Enterprise. I two identical Dell LCDs connected to the dock. One via VGA and the other DVI. Both displays are being mirrored and I can't seem to change it. There is only one monitor listed in Device manager. Both external monitors will only display an image if the PC is started closed from the docking station power button. Removing the laptop and replacing it on the docking station does not wake the monitors and there is no image until the laptop is manually shutdown and restarted. I have updated graphics drivers, as well as any driver related to the dock (USB3.0 etc). I have tried a displayport to DVI connector as well, no go. After some research I discovered the firmare may need to be updated. The synaptics package from the lenovo support downloads site gave me the message that my firmware was already up to date. The other fwdphb06.exe that is recommended elsewhere would not update. When I double-click the package there is no install prompt or process being run. There is an external monitor connected to the dock. I have swapped the dock for another, as well as the power supplies for each. I'm stumped. Any idea what my issue may be?

I have the same problem and worse, when resuming from sleep it will often fail to bring up one or both of my monitors and I have to manually unplug their power cords to revive them. Worked fine with my old Thinkpad and dock. Trying the firmware update now... Lto 3 tapes

I've had a windows vista laptop for nearly a year now and not had any problems until last week. After installing the game 'Roller Coaster Tycoon' onto my laptop the display on my screen has changed. The start menu has
changed into a funny blurry colour and all the symbols are blurred. Everything seems a lot larger and my whole laptop has a sort of negative effect. I think because the game i installed was pretty old way before windows vista it may have altered my
graphics. Can anyone help me ???

A:windows vista display has changed

Sounds like the game just changed the resolution of the display. Most games do and then revert back when you close them but occasionally it gets stuck. Right-click the desktop --> click personalize --> click display settings --> set the 'resolution' to the highest possible setting.

Ihave just installed the Windows update - KB925902 - and restarted my computer and now my whole display settings have changed. Everything looks huge and the font looks blurry - how do I change it all back to what it was?? All of the icons on the desktops and in my internet explorer are too big to fit on one page - it's soooo annoying and I am in no way computer literate. I also cannot put my computer on standby - it will only let me restart or switch off?

Since Windows 10 first came out I have had it installed with no issue. However, yesterday I started having random problems all related to connectivity and content display.

- Some pages will randomly not load correctly in Firefox, IE or Chrome. Sometimes only part of the page will load correctly, sometimes I will get an error like "cannot establish secure connection" or some other form of error. In some cases, simply refreshing the page will solve the issue, in other cases I have to browse the page in a different browser. Some pages display correctly in one browser but not another.

- Origin will sometimes not display content in it's browser correctly.

- Downloads will sometimes fail to complete correctly.

- Sometimes I cannot search for extensions in Firefox. Sometimes Firefox says no extensions are found, other times I will try to install an extension and it will simply say it cannot be installed.

- I cannot run the Windows Media Creation tool. I have even tried downloading it from another computer and transferring it over to my computer.

- Even the "photo" button on this post does not activate when I click it, but some of the other buttons do--yet simply refreshing the page fixes it.

- Sometimes images or videos will not display correctly.

- ALL problems are completely random (but very frequent), sometimes pages display fine, others not, sometimes fine in one browser but not another.

Hello!
I really really need your help!
My screen display is changed after a windows update. It's not as crisp and bright as before but is a bit blurry and hurts the eye. @[email protected]

I have re-installed the latest driver of NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS but with no changes...
Device manager displays NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS under Display Adapters..
I have fiddled with NVIDIA Control Panel with no good result. T_T

I tried doing system restore but i did not have any restore points created ever which is a FAIL...
Moreover, when I check Screen Resolution, only display option is 1. Display device on: VGA .... Isn't this supposed to include NVIDIA options?

Monitor driver SyncMaster 732NW is updated as well..

I hope you can help me with this.
Thank you!

Hi.
I have just received a long Win 10 update. After completion, the screen display had completely changed. I checked Device manager, and it shows the correct display adapter - ATI Radeon HD 4200. The events tab shows that a device install was requested, and the installation was installed at 16:03:02. However, the information below states that the device "requires further installation".
When I check the display adapter properties from the Settings page, the adapter is shown as Microsoft Basic Display adapter. The information for this device shows that it was started at 16:00:50. From the state of the screen, it is clear that this is the one in use.
So, Device manager is showing one adapter; the computer is using another. What do I do to reset it?
