Windows Store failed to sync machine licenses.

Q: Windows Store failed to sync machine licenses.

Event ID: 512
Task Category: None
Level: Error
Windows Store failed to sync machine licenses. Result code 0x80070002

The above is last error that I still have in Event Log. My understanding is that I should sing in with Microsoft store to get rid of this error.
And that is the thing: I am not willing to sign. I never bought anything from MS App Store (which I disabled). So how can I stop this annoying attempts of licenses syncing?

I did some extensive search but could not find any solution to the problem except signing with App Store.

Thank you for any suggestion

Preferred Solution: Windows Store failed to sync machine licenses.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello Michal,

If you like, the Windows Store has a ton of free apps as well that you may like to install and use. They are not all pay for apps.

Updates for your default modern apps that came with Windows 8.1 are also updated through the Store.

You could use the method in the tutorial below to sync app licenses to stop the error, but it requires you to open the Store and of course requires you to sign in to the Store with a Microsoft account to do.

Done a clean install of Windows 8.1 and noticed a repeated event in the event log Administrative Events
"Windows Store failed to sync machine licenses. Result code 0x80070002"
Does any know what this event means, google doesn't show anything!

Clean install done using the generic Windows 8.1 License Key and Activated with my upgrade Key.

Windows shows that it is Activated and no issues otherwise, just interested if anybody else has found this event in the event log

Are you having any issues with the Store?

If so, you might see if you may be able to manually sync the Store license.

I have (also according to Windows Control Panel > Installed Updates) successfully installed KB2919355 on 13th Apr 2014. So to me, the KB2919355 is in place (and various KB installations after that, too) <- I do get all the Windows System updates (including security updates) BUT not Windows Store application updates.

So the problem is the "Windows Store failed to sync machine licenses. Result code 0x80070490" which pops into Windows Event log on daily basis.

TEMPORARILY fix: running Windows update troubleshooter fixes the problem (it stops and restarts BITS and Cryptographic services) and after a while I get a notification to the Windows Store Tile that there are new updates (if any). BUT after rebooting Windows the problem (Windows Store failed to sync machine licenses. Result code 0x80070490) always re-appears in the Event logs.

Here is the report of successfull Windows update troubleshooter.

I too keep getting the "Windows Store failed to sync machine licenses. Result code 0x80070490" Event Log Message on one of the three machines I have W8.1 Update 1 installed on. I have done the Sync routine many times and I have "Disabled" the WSRefreshAppsListTask and yet I still get the Event Log Error every day when I boot the system. Seems like there must be something else going on that is screwed up on this system. Help would be appreciated!

A:Windows Store failed to sync machine licenses. 0x80070490

I get that same Event ID 512 daily or maybe after a restart too. answers.microsoft.com forum has much discussion and apparently someone says Microsoft has it listed in the todo list and expect a fix soon. But.... does it matter If everything works fine ? If you look at the Tast that triggers the error, it says completed successfully.

Seems not right to disable the task just to hide an error.

I recently used TeamViewer to help my mother install a game from the Windows Store. We both have Windows 8.1 laptops. This was the first time either of us had ever purchased anything from the Windows Store and I was surprised to be notified that our purchase (which was only $4!) had come with an additional 81 (yes, that's EIGHTY-ONE) licenses for the game.

I can't imagine why it would give us 81 additional licenses - 1 would have seemed more than generous - but I'm not going to look a gift horse in the mouth. I really just want to use ONE of those licenses. I already have the free version of that game on my computer. How can I obtain one of those licenses and apply it to my copy of the game to unlock the extra levels that it provides?

A:Windows Store - Using Extra Licenses?

Hello RhinoCan,

You would need to sign in to the Store with the Microsoft account that purchased the app.

Brink - I get this error frequently. When I tried your tutorial for manually syncing my Store apps, I found that I'm not Signed In to Store. No surprise because (a) I use only a local account on the Win 8.1 Pro 64-bit machine anyway and (b) I have never manually downloaded anything from Store - it doesn't interest me at all.

So I was unable to follow the next steps in your tutorial.

Why is my PC trying to sync with Store if I never go there and I never sign in to it? Is this due to automatic action by the initial tiles in the Metro desktop that I almost never go to? (I boot up into normal desktop, not Metro.) How can I get my 8.1 to stop trying to sync?

A:Why is my PC trying to sync with Store

Hello glnz,

If you mean in your event logs, then it's nothing to worry about since it just means that it was unable to at that time, but will try again later when able.

Even though your are signed in to Windows with a local account, the Store will still sync.

On the 2003 server I had to ADD this reg entry and set it to 0:

There are many applications and services to Sync & Store Bookmarks of different Browsers online. But I want a user friendly application to Sync & Store Bookmarks of different Browsers on my computer locally. Please share thoughts and sugessions as to how to accomlish this.

A:How to Sync & Store Bookmarks on your computer

The point of syncing is to make sure bookmarks on different devices you use have the same set of bookmarks. Syncing with something stored on one computer isn't going to work.
Not all browsers can import bookmarks from a different browser.

You can store your bookmarks locally either by exporting them to your desktop or a USB stick.

Then you take the USB stick with the bookmarks and move from one device to another importing the bookmarks. This requires lots of labor on your part. Exporting the bookmarks at the end of each day, if you have made any changes then going around to all the devices (computers, tablets, cellphones) and importing the new file into each device.

Is there any possibility of changing the store location for sync center? Windows 7 stores the cache on C (I think it's C:\Windows\CSC). The problem is that I need to share a folder which of 20GB and I've got only 16GB free on C.
Any solutions?
I've already read a short guide for windows vista (which probably doesn't apply to win 7 for some reason) - Moving the Offline Files Cache in Windows Vista - The Storage Team at Microsoft - File Cabinet Blog - Site Home - TechNet Blogs. And it didn't really help.

A:Sync store location problem

Isn't there anyone who can help? You used to be a lot faster when it came to this type of situations. The fact is that I think that not being able to choose where you can cache the sync information is one of the big drawbacks of Windows 7.

Hi there
If I want to download say any free app from the store I get asked - first to confirm my password on the local account -- no big deal with that, then I have to set up a Ms account -- well I can even live with that I suppose --after all I set up a google account to download phone apps

-- but what Galls me is that it says "We need this info to be able to sync the apps across your various devices --- THERE'S NO WAY TO DISABLE THIS OPTION -- I might just want to download the application to a Stand alone PC - I don't necessarily want it synced to 10 other PC's on the Lan or 5 mobile phones !!!!.

I also don't want automatic upgrades too with these types of apps --I've found often on Android that an updated version often performs worse than the previous version or the interface has changed to change the app horribly.

At least with most android applications you can disable a lot of those settings.

Keep your files backed-up and synching together across all of your devices using OneDrive Desktop App for Windows which offers 15gb free cloud storage for each Windows Live/Hotmail/Outlook ID and sells more for cheap.

It can be as easy as dragging anything you want backed up into OneDrive (formerly SkyDrive) folder which lives both on your HD and in the Cloud, which is the gauzy name for MS Servers. But with a few more minutes configuration you'll have your User folders stored in the cloud ready to access on the internet and sync'd to any of your devices.

After trying several methods for over a year I've settled on physically moving the active User folders to the OneDrive folder with the steps in User Folders - Change Default Location.

You can also place the OneDrive folder on any other HD, but be aware that if it is moved from C and you use Win7 Backup Imaging it will force the inclusion of the data drive to which Onedrive and/or User folders are moved since they are System folders.

You can do the same on all your PC's and have one master set of files hosted and kept Sync'd this way by Onedrive, even access them from any device anywhere via the internet, share them publicly, by invitation, or link.

In using this method the only risk is if you'd delete a file or folder and have it sync on other devices before you realize you still need it. In this case the file/folder will be in each Recycle Bin. For this reason I'd uncheck Recycle Bin in CCleaner so... Read more

A:Sync, Backup and Store your Files to the Cloud with OneDrive

Hi Greg,

Sounds like a pretty nifty idea. I've got a similar idea and I'm sure there is a downside to it that escapes me at the moment, but instead of copying why not just change the location of your user's document folder from its default location, i.e. via right clicking on the folder, then properties, and then the location tab and choosing change location, and moving it to within your SkyDrive folder on your hard drive? I guess the down side would be every document you saved, unless you made a conscious effort to "Save As" in an alternative location, it would naturally if a document, be automatically saved in the "Default" user's documents folder, which now after the change in locations would happen to be the newly relocated user's "Documents" folder now inside the SkyDrive folder which gets synced to the cloud and you might not want it in the cloud. That's the only downside I can see. Can you think of others? I'm sure I got to be missing something...

I had to reinstall the entire Win 8 OS after 8.1 failed after 24 hours of normal operations- it lost USB support the first time.

So I just reinstalled the OS 8.0. Installed Media Pack. Went to Microsoft site to install Win 8.1. It took me to the store. Soon as I click on Install, it supposed to start download, it says, "Something happened, and install of Win 8.1 could not be completed".

What do they mean, "Something happened?" It did not even start to download.

I did not install Chipset, and VGA drivers from Asus manufacturer because they had different release versions for Win 8 and Win 8.1. I thought- why install them if I can install 8.1 drivers after update. But it would not let me download 8.1. The message appears right away- it has no time to scan anything to even know- drivers were not installed. It just blocks download/installation right away dead. I do not have any antivirus. It did not ask me to validate my Win 8.0 yet- I figured- it knows me as I did it when installed first time OS. I have nothing but OS and LAN driver installed. This is frustrating!

I was unable to download the latest update to IOS 8.4 through itunes (I did it directly in my phone). I noticed another problem at the same time.  I was unable to download podcasts through the itunes store.  I tried to update to the latest version (12.2.1) but I was unable to.  It looks like it started to connect to the itunes store then stopped.  I ran the itunes diagnostic and got this message "secure link to itunes store failed".  I did some searching and most places suggested going to the compand prompt typing "netsh winsock reset" and then rebooting.  I did but still have the same problem.  I've done it twice, the first time simply restarting and then turning off and waiting a few minutes and turning back on.  Here are some of the details from the itunes diagnostic:

Another suggestion was to check to make sure that itunes is enabled on the security firewall (it is).  Someone else suggested deleting itunes completely and reinstalling.  I'd rather not do that if I don't have to.  ... Read more

OK, i'd like to make it clear that i'm using the so-called "real" Administrator account that is hidden but can be activated, not a regular account with admin privelidges. At first i was trying to figure out if Metro apps can be used by this account, and it appeared that they cant, but managed to find a trick to enable it. i did it by making sure UAC is on, making sure that FilterAdministratorToken is set to a value of 1 in the Registry, and by enabling "User Account Control: Admin approval mode for the built-in Administrator account" (secpol.msc [Local Security Policy]> Local Policies> Security Options).

So i did a bit more research and toying around, only to discover that although i might have found a workaround for running most Metro apps in general, i discovered that syncing, d/l'ing of apps from the Windows Store, etc is not possible unless you're using a Microsoft account. Please note that any other account with admin privelidges can use the apps without a hitch, as well as any Standard account. So it clearly is not a limitation of just having an admin account, alone.

Also, the built-in Admin is the only kind of account that cant be converted from a local account to a MS Account, all other accounts with admin privelidges can do so. If you look in the Control Panel and try to make changes to the account, you will find that the option isnt available, whereas with other accounts it is. A:Use Metro Apps As Admin AND Be Able To Sync, d/l Store apps, etc???

Hello Stephen, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Setting that security policy below to be enabled will basically just turn the built-in elevated "Administrator" account into an unelevated administator account that requires UAC approval to open or run anything that requires elevated rights to do so.

This would be why you are able to open the Store afterwards, but you would still need to sign into the Store with any Microsoft account to be able to install any "Metro" Store apps.
Windows Store - Sign in with Different Microsoft Account in Windows 8

You still will not be able to switch the built-in "Administrator" to be a Microsoft account. It can only remain as a local account.

Hope this helps,

I've spent hours trying to do a repair install of Windows 10 on a VM Ware Fusion 8.5 virtual machine. The host machine is an iMac. The reason I'm doing a repair install is because some system files are corrupted and "sfc /scannow" only gets about halfway before it says it couldn't load some resources then quits.

The "Windows 10 installation has failed" message appears not long after starting the installation when it says about 6%.

I've attached a screenshot of the failure message as well as disk manager and the Panther folder which is curiously unpopulated (there's nothing in the two folders shown above). The Panther folder doesn't contain any error logs. However, on a previous installation attempt, I looked at an error log and it showed that it was not able to copy something from the installation disc to a location on C:/windows.

I have installed Windows 10 without problem on a number of other machines, but I'm stuck here on this one. By the way, no external drives or devices are attached to the machine (other than the apple bluetooth trackpad and keyboard which have never been a problem on other virtual machines). I've tried doing this repair install from the DVD drive as well as by copying the .iso image to the desktop and mounting it in file explorer. The result is the same.

Yes it does come with both, but the key can only be used by either the 32 bit or the 64 bit version, you can not use both version at the same time with the same key, and you can install the full retail version on one PC and reinstall it if you need too.
I hope that helped you.

A:Windows 7 Licenses

What kind of licenses are these? There are various kinds:

1) If you purchase a retail copy from a store (it'll come in a nice box) or an Upgrade copy, then you can move it to another computer, provided you completely uninstall it from the first. The retail license/ upgrade license can only be used on one computer at any given time. Depending on how long ago it was activated, you may have to call MS for activation.

2) If win7 came preinstalled on a computer (typically when you buy a big brand like Dell, HP, Lenovo), or if you purchased an OEM System builder license from Newegg, Amazon etc., then that license is tied to the original computer. It cannot be moved to another computer.

I need to find the download or disc's somewhere. I have license keys for 32 and 64 bit but I waited too long to get the software. Now I need it desperately to install on my new computer. I do not want to start with Vista if there is anyway I can help it.

Is there anyone out there who knows of a reliable download for it now???

A:Have licenses but I can't get Windows 7RC help!!

The download is no longer available from Microsoft. I'm unaware of any way to get it.

I am building a new computer (the one described below). I want to use a current Windows 7 Ultimate Product Key, however I have used it on 3 computers, and I have replaced those computers with Linux. Now I want to transfer Windows 7 to my new computer, but according to what I know from testing the product key, I can't transfer Windows 7 unless the other computers are still running windows 7 with that product key. Also, I'd prefer not to call Microsoft Customer Support if it isn't automated, as calling Customer Support can be awful because of the music and other stuff.

Thanks in advance

A:Use Windows 7 Product Key that has ran out of licenses

You can only use 1 retail key on 1 computer at a time.

And yes you`ll most likely have to make a phone call, there`s no way around that.

Hi, I have a broken HP Pavilion 23-b151er, repair it is not possible. I installed the hard drive of my HP Pavilion 23-b151er preloaded with licensed manufacturer Windows 8 into a new system unit, activation Windows not occurred. I need to know your license key for Windows 8, Microsoft has recommended to contact your hardware manufacturer. I have a serial number for my HP Pavilion 23-b151erI registered in the program HP Support Assistant, please help in this situation. Turn on the computer case of faults 23-b151er no opportunity, has failed motherboard.

A:How do you know the key pre-installed Windows 8 licenses

Hi: You cannot transfer an OEM licensed operating system from one PC to another. That violates the terms of the Microsoft licensing agreement. http://www.microsoft.com/oem/en/licensing/sblicensing/pages/licensing_faq.aspx#fbid=ajGttZ6jBqV Q. My customer bought a new PC and wants to move the OEM software from the old PC to the new one. Can't users do whatever they want with their software? A. No, the OEM software is licensed with the computer system on which it was originally installed and is tied to that original machine. OEM licenses are single-use licenses that cannot be installed on more than one computer system, even if the original machine is no longer in use. The Microsoft Software License Terms, which the end user must accept before using the software, state that the license may not be shared, transferred to, or used concurrently on different computers. System builders must provide end-user support for the Windows license on computers they build, but cannot support licenses on computers they didn?t build. This is a fundamental reason why an OEM System Builder License can't be transferred. The windows 8 product key was encrypted in the BIOS of your HP Pavilion 23-b151er and would only work on that PC. That is why there are no more OEM product key stickers beginning with all PC's that come with Windows 8 and newer.

Last Friday, I was contacted by a local 'non-profit' to "assess" and recommend what options they might have with four donated Latitude E7440 laptops that "..won't boot"..
Having these now in my possession, I find that some 'helpful person' (arguably at the previous owner's insistence) has DELETED all the partitions on the 256 GB SSD disks in ALL FOUR laptops... (Just wonderful).   Which means, I suppose, that there is no means to restore these (as I might normally expect to do from the 'restore partition') and proceed with Windows 10 upgrades insofar as this 'restore partition' no longer exists (which would be where a new install might retrieve this 'license', right? ).
But I seem to remember having once accomplished something similar with a 'clean install' of Windows since that particular laptop HAD, in fact, been previously activated with Windows 8.1, as were all four of these units.  But that was then and I simply don't recall how we (Dell Support and myself) accomplished this (and frankly, since I'm not gettin' paid for this effort, I'm not terribly 'motivated' to spend a boatload of time on extended efforts with Dell Support, as I seem to remember was the case previously..).
Since this non-profit really doesn't have a lot of resources to spend on new licenses, is there no means to 'resurrect' what I'd always thought was an 'embedded' Windo... Read more

A:Windows OS licenses - lost or so it seems...

Windows 10 Version 1709 Installation Media is Downloadable from Microsoft. During installation it will automatically input the product key embedded within the ACPI table of the UEFI BIOS and install the correct Edition of Windows 10 (likely in the case of a Latitude - Windows 10 Pro):

I have two old systems that aren't I don't use, a Dell Optiplex and an HP DC5100. The Dell has a license for XP and the HP has a license for XP Pro. Aside from that I just built a new PC with an AMD 8150 that I would looooove to get Windows 8 installed onto it while saving $$$.

Ok, so here's my question: Is there any way I can use either of those unused licenses and take advantage of Microsoft's $40 upgrade offer, but putting it on the new PC I've built and keep those old primitive machines in the closet?

I'm vaguely familiar with the differences between builder licenses and upgrade licenses, but if someone could explain it to me in layman's terms I would appreciate it. I know there are a lot of legal technicalities that point towards "no, I can't use the old XP licenses on my build"...but I think if Microsoft is desperate enough to drop upgrades to $40 in the first place, maybe they'd be willing to let this slide.

Thanks in advance!

A:$40 Windows 8 Upgrade using old licenses...

You can't upgrade an OEM OS for install on another computer -- the OS license is tied to the computer it came with, although XP is in the upgrade path for Windows 8 (the basic edition).

Technically, it's only legal for a personal system builder to install a retail OS on his or her computer, although MS has, if not allowed, at least not prosecuted personal system builders for installing OEM operating systems on their personal machines. This may change with Windows 8 and the way it is registered/activated.

Can anyone tell me if you have an license for Windows 2000, can you put Windows 98 on that computer. We seem to be experiencing problems with Windows 2000 and would like to use Windows 98 instead. I know this can be done with Microsoft Office software. You can purchase the newer one and use the older one on the computer and still be compliant with the license. I have searched the microsoft site, but I just don't know where to look.

Hi, I have a question about how many licenses are needed to be compliant when installing client computers with RIS/WDS.
As this document states:
- With OEM license I don't have re-imaging rights.
- I can use the VL media to re-image a client computer that comes with OEM license.
- I can re-image with VL media only computer with same os type and language (e.g.: with a XP Pro Italian VL media I can re-image just XP Pro Italian OEM client computers).
- For computers that come with OEM license and I re-image with VL media I have to call OEM support and I don't have rights to call Microsoft support directly.
But I can't understand HOW MANY licenses are required. E.G. one of my customers has 340 client computers, laptops or desktops, made by HP, all with XP pro or 7 Pro OEM. How many licenses do I require to reimage all of them with RIS/WDS ? 2 (one for Xp Pro
and one for 7 Pro) o 340 (one for every client computer) ?
Because if they need just 2 licenses it is not a problem, if they have to buy again 340 windows Pro licenses when they already payed for the OEM licenses I think they will never implement RIS/WDS.........
Is there a Microsoft document that explains this aspect of reimaging rights?
Many thanks in advance.

A:Windows licenses required for RIS/WDS

For any licensing question you should contact Microsoft directly for proper answers.

i used belarc adviser to find my Licenses key and when i entered the key in( get more features with a new edition of windows) it says this key won't work

A:wrong Licenses key windows 8

The Key you found is probably the OEM Key.

Please open an Elevated Command Prompt window (in Start, type 'Command' - a Command Prompt icon will appear, right-click on it, and select Run as Administrator)
At the Prompt, type

Licensingdiag.exe -report %userprofile%\desktop\report.txt -log %userprofile%\desktop\repfiles.cab

(note the spaces!)
two files will be put on your desktop -
open the 'report.txt' file in Notepad, and copy/paste the results to your response - you can ignore the repfiles.cab file for the moment, as it's only backup data

Hi there,

I got a Surface Pro last month. It had a 8GB partition for the system's default restoration which I transferred to an SD card before merging that space with my C: drive.

Considering the unreliability of SD cards and the fact that this will be pointless past June 30th because I won't be able to get updates if I install 8.1, I was looking into other alternatives. Although I did back my partition with Clonezilla after I was done installing everything, it would be nice to be able to do a fresh install if needed. Since I do own a Windows 8 license, I should be able to install Windows 8.1 from a disc (I have external DVD drive) using my key code that I discovered after running Belarc Advisor.

Anyone has any idea if this would work?

A:Do Windows 8 Licenses work the same way in a Surface Pro?

Hi there

If it's an RT system --then no. The newer surface pro's which are Windows will work exactly like windows --if you change the built in version that came with the device (you'll have to disable protected boot first) then a retail copy will install OK. Backup though just like you would a regular PC. It will also work just like a windows PC regarding updates etc.

For RT all bets are off - and that whole RT system doesn't actually look very long for this world either.

"A bug in what appears to be the Microsoft Windows activation service is causing Windows 10 Pro licenses to be downgraded to Windows 10 Home and then stating that Windows is not activated.

This bug appears to be widespread with many users reporting that Windows is stating that their license is not activated and prompting the user to troubleshoot the problems."

There's an easy fix, as noted in the article, so please be aware of this if your license is deactivated mysteriously.

Hi,  I'm trying to figure out where did my Window 7 Product Codes/licenses  go... I think i have a valid code/license but I'm not sure. I'm trying to upgrade some pc's to Win 10.
A)   Machine 1 -- Inspiron 1525 (My Father's)
It may have had WinXp/Vista .. I upgraded the machine with an SSD.
Then installed Win7 (home) (bought a copy with a license)
License 1
Upgraded to Win10
This machine has been retired...
B)  Machine 2 - Inspiron 3737 (My Mother's)
It had Win7 on it.
I backed up the1525, then installed the SSD in the Dell 3737-- Wow.. It booted with Win10 (as per the 1525)
So I'm not sure which license it's using (the 3737 or my installed 1525)?
This machine is running Win10.
So I now want to install what I think is good license (my purchased copy on Win7) on another machine. And I'm having issues...
My assumption through all this is that the Dell 3737 Win7 license would be valid for an upgrade to Win10. Leaving my purchased copy of win7 (on the 1525) as available.
So how did I get my licenses to work..
Frustrated in Toronto ...

I am looking for some help with a couple media player fies that I am having a problem opening. When opening the files I had to aquire a license but it has expired after a couple days and now it won't open. I should have read the fine print better, but is there any way to open these fiels again with out purchasing another license? I feel though since I have previsouly paid for that license that I should be able to open the file any time I like. But the experation does not permit it.
Does any one have any ideas on how I might be able to open these files to view or even open them to back them up or even a way to keep them open permanently. I refuse to pay again, though I should have read the terms better. I have tried opening it with my ATI file player, windows movie maker and my Media player 9 and nothing works. Or maybe is there a player out there that automatically bypasses there encryptions and allows play? Any help or suggestion would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

A:Windows Media Player 9 Help with Licenses

We're not allowed to help you on cracking any licensed products. As you've read in the fine print of your package, some songs are only yours to listen to for a short while with certain choices of packages, your license has run out so it's not yours anymore.
As is the case with lots of things, be careful that what you get in the big print isn't taken away in the small print.
While there are ways and means to have the song you want, I have never, I repeat never lowered myself to such a course of action, and have always been very pleased to spend 15 on songs that are available for free.
