Dell XPS 15 (9550)- Not working with WD15 Docking Station

Q: Dell XPS 15 (9550)- Not working with WD15 Docking Station

Hi everyone,
I got a WD15 dock and made sure all the drivers and bios were updated. plugged it in and started having issues. First it wasn't working with my keyboard and mouse when plugged into the Docking station (with the lid closed). No biggy plugged the into the laptop and continued working. Now it acts like the Ethernet Cable is being unplugged and plugged in constantly (lid still closed). Sometimes everything will work with the lid open, other times if acts like I unplugged the dock making the monitors flash on and off. Please help!

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I've been using my Dell XPS 15 9550 for a couple of months now and everything was fine, i decided to connect it to an external monitor P2715Q through a Dell WD15 Type-C docking station, which working fine except for having the Monitor at 30Hz versus 60Hz. i've been facing alot of Blue Screen Errors, and one day found there was a firmware update for the Docking Station, the Monitor went blank and found the firmware was updating usually when i startup my laptop and it's connected to the docking station it gives me a warning message about the power being less than 60W so i unplugged the Type C cable connecting the dock to  the Laptop mid installation, it rolled back and i then figured i shouldn't have disconnected it. This morning i connected my dock as usual but it wasn't being recognized it's as if the Type C wasn't reading the Dock, i connected a Type C to Display port cable direct to the monitor to check if it was the port but that worked instantly, please help what should i do?

A:DELL WD15 Type-C Docking Not working with XPS 15 9550 after failed firmware update

Unplugging mid firmware update is a no no. Try the firmware update once or twice or so again, with nothing else connected to the dock. If that fails, try Dell service. Mine updated the second time but said failed at the end, then third time reported to be updated, and now seems to work just the way it did before.
I've had horrible issues with the WD15 initially, all sorts of devices disconnecting and not working properly, including plain wired USB mouse and keyboard. After tens of driver and BIOS updates, things eventually stabilized (although the screen developed a flicker meanwhile). Now it seems to work stably, as long as the laptop is in airplane mode, otherwise I still get temporary freezes. Many people blame it on some sort of the Dell Wireless 1830 adapter with USB - some say wifi power should be reduced to 75% in driver settings, but that replacement with the Intel 8260 is a better solution. Please report back if the airplane mode helps with stability (wired Ethernet now stable here, if you're on wifi regularly and worried about withdrawal symptoms during a possibly prolonged airplane mode testing period).
30 Hz is max for a 4K display on the WD15, there's not enough bandwidth for more via the USB protocol. Recently a revised version of the Thunderbolt 3 dock, the TB16, has been released, and perhaps even works finally with a fan built in, supporting even two external 4K displays @60Hz. 3rd-party TB3 docks have started appearing too, but make sure... I have just bought a Dell XPS 15 (9560) and a Dell WD15 docking station with 130W power brick (same wattage as the laptop's AC-adapter). When I only use the docking station to power the laptop the discrete graphics card (GTX 1050) does not seem to work. When I am in a game (eg. Starcraft 2), I get like 15 fps with the NVIDIA recommended settings. Then when I plug in the laptops's own power brick (while still in the game) I get an immediate four-fold increase in framerate. When I unplug the laptop's own power brick the framerate drops down to 15 fps again in a heartbeat. Furthermore, when I only power the laptop through the docking station, I cannot even find the discrete GPU in the list when I'm trying to run the Geekbench 4 compute benchmark (OpenCL). Only the integrated graphics shows up. When I plug in laptop's power brick I find GTX 1050 in the list.
I have run the Dell Command Update application and all my drivers and firmware are up to date.
Does anyone have any idea to what the problem could be?

So I am to receive a precision 5510 in the next couple days. I've already bought monitors and a wd15 dell dock. I am a bit confused as to how to hook up dual monitors given that there aren't two of the same port on the WD15 like there was on the E-dock I am currently using for my precision m4700.

At any rate my monitors have HDMI (2), and VGA (1) inputs. The WD 15 has one HDMI, One mini display port, and one VGA.

To run dual monitors I  am assuming I need to run one from the dock's HDMI port to one monitor's HDMI and one either from the dock's Mini display port (with an adapter to HDMI) tot he HDMI port on the other monitor? I supposed I could go VGA to VGA as well, but prefer HDMI.
IS this correct?

My XPS 13 9350 can sometimes feel a bit warm (through the keyboard) when it's been connected to the WD15 for a length of time. CPU temps aren't out of control but it did make me wonder if it could be harmful having my laptop connected as often as it can be to the docking station. Because it uses the WD15 to connect to a number of peripherals (the ports that work of course - I still have no USB 3.0 use), I have it connected more often then I would if only to charge the battery. So... could this lead to harm or diminished capacity for my battery?

A:Continuous connection to a WD15 docking station.

Hi benefit5,
If you are feeling the the system is overheating. I would suggest you to update the BIOS to the latest on the system. Please enter your service tag # on the link below, select the operating system, and then download the BIOS from the BIOS section onto the system and install it.

I am on my 3rd docking station.
The first two reported that my power supply was suppose to be 180w but apparently only 130w was being passed.
My current one only shows 60W.
I have all the BIOS updates for my 7510 and I have followed the procedure for WD15 and it too has the latest updates/drivers and yet, it still will not charge my laptop and I need to also connect my external power supply for it to charge.
Does anyone have this working?  Is it suppose to actually charge?  Should I return and try yet a 4th docking station?

That said as soon as I connect a mini display port to display port cable for my third monitor it will ONLY display in 680x450 resolution. The other 2 stay at 1680x1050. The third monitor does this 680x450 with just a VGA connected to main display, Display port to mini display port on the third monitor with the second monitor on HDMI>VGA adapter removed.
Can anyone please advise which cables we would need for a three monitor setup.

I have an external HDMI monitor, the problem is simple.
When the monitor is plugged in the docking station anything using that HDMI screen DOES NOT use the NVIDIA GPU, it uses the on-board Intel chip.
When connecting the monitor directly to the laptop all applications on the external monitor use the NVIDIA GPU (I have this as default in the NVIDIA control panel)

Please advise on how I can get the D3100 to work with the NVIDIA GPU.

Many thanks.

Hello so my laptop (Precision 1350 Workstation) with windows 7 which i bought in September 2016 stopped charging after I used it with my docking station . It worked for a week or two prior to this and then I started getting a notification every time I put the laptop on the docking station that said "ac power adapter not recognized , use adapter of 65 watts or above" but the adapter was 130 watts. Even when the laptop was taken off the docking station and the ac adapter was just plugged into the wall it still won't charge at all. I made sure the bios was updated 1.11.4 and even checked for driver to update and ran the online diagnostics there was no problems but it still won't charge. A tech came out last Wednesday and replaced the motherboard and this fixed the problem for about a day but then when I put it back on the docking station the same problem occurred and it still won't charge. I even tried it on a different docking station but the same make and model as mine and the problem persists. Does anyone know what is wrong? The phone tecnicians and the technicians don't seem to know what to do

So, my computer is out of warranty, and I was trying to update the drivers for my WD15 Docking Station using the PDF guide that Dell provided, only to find out that the guide is outdated. I no longer know what order I need to install everything in. I should've written it down the last time I was on the phone with customer support (before my warranty expired), since Dell seems to engineer their stuff to break for no reason after a certain period of time. Anyways. Can somebody help me install the drivers in the correct order so that my keyboard/headphones/other devices stop randomly getting disconnected from the laptop? Thanks.

A:Dell XPS 15 9550 docking issues

The order doesn't matter.  The issue is that the latest BIOS updates released for a handful of systems, including your XPS 15 9550, have introduced intermittent device disconnects for USB devices connected via the WD15 and TB16 docks. There are several threads about this in this forum already.  So far, there isn't a fix.  The only driver updates you need are the ASMedia USB controller, Realtek USB Ethernet, and Realtek USB audio. Then you can optionally install the firmware updates for the WD15 and the Realtek Ethernet controller if desired.

Our laptop assets consist of Dell E series laptops. Most laptops (approx 50) have the standard dell docking port station.

As Dell change the design with each revision including the dock port style and position, does anyone know if Dell are introducing a new series anytime soon or in the near future? I don't want to have to spend ?200 on a dock only for the next laptop not to fit.
Of course there are the USB style docks which will work on any laptop, obvious downsides is to keep having to plug the AC charger in.
How do you guys manage this in your organisations, 50 x ?200 is a lot of money to spend every 5 years or so adding in the price of new laptops, screens and stands.

Hello All,
I work in a school district and we have a number of Dell Latitude 3350 laptops along with a Dell D1000 USB3.0 Dual-Video Docking Station. One of the docking stations has recently started having a strange issue with the USB ports seem to stop working. The video and LAN ports seem perfectly fine and continue to work. But the teacher will lose connectivity to their mouse, keyboard, and document camera.
I can disconnect and reconnect the USB cable to the laptop, but not even 15 minutes later the same issue comes back. I've reinstalled the drivers, and even replaced the entire unit (and it's USB cable) with a brand new one out of the box and the same issue still comes up.
Could this still be a software/driver issue? Or am I potentially looking at a bad USB port on the laptop?
Many thanks for any and all help. Have a great day!

A:Dell D1000 Docking Station

A bad USB port on the laptop seems unlikely if your video and LAN traffic are working correctly given that they're also flowing through your laptop's USB port.  You can certainly test another USB port on that laptop (assuming that system has more than one), although even that wouldn't be a conclusive test since all USB ports on a system are often wired to the same controller chip.  Do you have another laptop you can test with?  Otherwise, the best way to rule out drivers would probably be to get the latest version available directly from DisplayLink, which is the company that makes the chips that enable those docks to carry video and other traffic on a USB cable.  Head over to DisplayLink.com for those.  Good luck!

I joined Dell Communities very recently after buying myself the Dell Precision 7510 laptop. It's a great product so far, but I want better. I want more ports. A docking station to go with it is the obvious solution.
What is the best docking station compatible with the Dell Precision 7510 laptop??? My specific needs/setup:
- 2 external screens (D-sub / HDMI connection, or for £50 more I can get display-port), possibly more screens in the future
- high-speed internet cable
- headphones/microphone
- USB sockets for mouse, keyboard, printer, scanner, external hard drives, etc.
I presume that the Advance E-port Replicator is the best/most suitable. I just want to be sure of this, because my laptop model (Precision 7510) is still very new, and not all information everywhere has been updated about compatibility. I don't want to make an expensive mistake. I'll be travelling and won't have the opportunity to "return" the products I buy.

A:Docking Station for Dell Precision 7510

Yes. I contacted Dell sales... and they told me that the Dell E-Port Plus II, is compatible with my Precision 7510. After written confirmation I went ahead and bought it from a UK supplier on Amazon for £100... but it came in dodgy packaging and wasn't quite working, and the adapter was the size of a brick (literaly). I returned that back to Amazon... and tried my luck with Amazon Germany. You can get the original product from them for about 140 euros, and it works perfectly. The link to the product:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00A8ESOVA?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=od_aui_detailpages00
(that's actually UK now that I check it... that's the one I bought and it's good)
Basically Dell hasn't updated it's information about compatability yet. The docking station is listed in the check-out for the Precision 7510, but doesn't specifically say it is compatible with that model. I've had other similar problems elsewhere too, like I want to instal LoJack on my laptop, but can't find any information on whether my laptop model supports something called "persistence technology" in the BIOS (which makes it impossible to uninstall LoJack even if you change hard drives).

I am running XP on my Dell Laptop. When it is in the docking station, the CPU runs at 100%. I am running Norton and Spybot. I am unable to determine what is causing the issue. If I take the laptop out of the docking station or do not have the power cord plugged in, the laptop runs great. Please help me.

A:Dell Laptop runs at 100% when in docking station

Can you precisely identify the process hogging that CPU?

You could download and run the free Process Explorer. You'll be able to precisely identify the culprit. By right-clicking on the process showing high CPU and selecting Properties… > Threads tab, you'll be able to pinpoint the thread that's hogging CPU within the process. You'll need to slide the bar left of CSwitch Delta in order to see the CPU values.

Process Explorer doesn't require any installation. Simply run the executable file once downloaded. Then, configure the Process Explorer window to your liking. You can even replace the Task Manager (CTRL+ALT+DEL) by clicking on Options > Replace Task Manager. You'll get a lot more features and details than with the Task Manager.

To determine which Process might be hogging CPU, click on the little graphs located at the top right of the window. A new window with four graphs will open, the first one being CPU. Click inside the window and press the spacebar to freeze the display. This will make it easier to hover your mouse cursor over the CPU peaks in order to read which process(es) is/are creating them.

I have a new LG ultra wide monitor that has support for HDMI and DisplayPort that I cannot seem to get working.  I have tried connecting the displayport cable to the dock and montior and I do not get a signal at all.  I have also tried the HDMI connection but I cannot get the resolution to the recommended 2560 x1080. Any direction would be very helpful/.

A:Dell XPS with Docking Station and LG Ultra Wide Monitor...

DisplayLink can support that resolution, but the D1000 is a very old dock that uses a very old DisplayLink chipset, and that particular chipset probably doesn't.  However, even with a newer version of DisplayLink such as would be found in the D6000 dock, DisplayLink would give you an inferior experience at that resolution anyway if you ever did things like gaming or full-screen video.  You really want your display to be directly controlled by the GPU.  So, considering that you have a 9550 that has a Thunderbolt 3 port, you have two options:
- Buy a USB-C to DisplayPort adapter, which would tap into the native GPU DisplayPort output wired to that port.
- If you want to have everything connected to a dock, buy either a WD15 or TB16 dock.  Either one would allow the attached display(s) to be driven directly by your GPU rather than through DisplayLink, and unlike your D1000, these docks can additionally charge your system via their USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 cable, so you'd have a true single-cable solution.  The WD15 allows a single display of that resolution (or dual 1080p), and the TB16 allows up to dual 4K displays or three 2560x1600 displays.  Since you have an XPS 15 9550, with the WD15 you'd need the 180W adapter version and with the TB16 you'd need the 240W adapter version.

The design of the Dell TB15's cable is really poor. The cable is hardwired on the docking station on the left side of the unit, which is same side the thunderbolt port is on the XPS15 9550. This gives you very little options on where to put the dock, since the cable is so short.
Has anyone found an TB3 extension cable that their using?
I'd really like to move the docking station away from where I keep my laptop. If I could find a 10' cable for the docking station, that would be perfect.
However, I'm not finding much in the way of female/male cables. I'm pretty sure I'd need an TB "active" cable.
Has anyone seen an extension cable that would work?
Thanks!

A:Extension cable for Dell TB15 docking station?

I asked this same question some time ago. It turns out that the TB15 cable is replaceable and the process is shown in the doc for it. Which would certainly indicate that they plan on having other lengths available at some point as the inside connector looks like some custom connector. That said, technically there is apparently a limitation on the cable length, I believe it is less than 3 feet. I have not found any ThunderBolt 3 extension cables.

Is there a firmware or driver I need to install to get this working? Thank you for the feedback and assistance. Jack

I have a setup with a home office and a work office in which I have a Dell SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Docking Station at each location.  Mysteriously about two to three weeks ago the Dell Gigabit Ethernet connection on BOTH docs just stopped working - it briefly connects, tries to identify the network and then shows no connection.
The laptop is an XPS 15 but to debug I also tried a Latitude E5470 - both laptops act the same way on both docks.  On the XPS 15 I updated all of the drivers from Dell and Intel.   TCP stack reset, adapters deleted and re-added, etc, etc.
When the Ethernet is connected directly to the latitude it works just fine at both locations.
I called Dell support and was told if the Ethernet works on the Latitude then I have to go back to the retailer where I bought the dock and ask them how to fix it because the dock and the laptop are out of support [I offered to pay but was told that the dock isn't covered regardless]... STUPIDEST TECH SUPPORT RESPONSE EVER (and I'm in tech support myself so I've heard it all) for multiple reasons as noted above - two docks and two laptops.
At roughly the same time the WiFi throughput on the XPS built-in adapter dropped to kbps speeds (well documented but no real solution - google "dell Wireless-N 7260 performance issues").
On the XPS I even upgraded from Win 8.1 to Win 10 to see if a "fresh" OS would flush out any bad drivers, etc - no help, same issue.
The only workarounds I fou... Read more

I just bought two LG E2340 Monitors that I want to hook up to my docking station. I have 1 VGA connector and 1 DVI connector. My laptop is a Dell Latitude D630. I have been reading other forums and they say in Display under Settings I can see which monitor is which but it doesnt say VGA or DVI.....
1 says Plug and Play Monitor on Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset Family
and
2 says (Default Monitor) on Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset Family

But they both slaved to one another, (they are showing a mirror image of each other)

what am i doing wrong?

I dont quite understand your setup sorry, you have a laptop (with a screen) that you want to connect 2 more screens to, thus ending up with 3 screens total? if so, Its unusual for a laptop to be able to do that.
Anyway, have you check the box which says "Extend my desktop onto this monitor"? in display properties? if that isnt selected they will just display mirror images like you say.

Hey there, I own a dell XPS 13 and recently bought a second hand Dell D3000 docking station to plug in 2 external monitors to my laptop. The XPS is currently running under Windows 10.I downloaded the lastest video and USB SS drivers, the lastest Display Link software.I plugged in 1 of the screen which worked for about 10 seconds. Now, none of the 2 external screen I am trying to connect are displaying anything.
Please note that my computer is recognizing the docking station in the device manager
Additional Step I tried: - Unplugging everything, uninstalling the displaylink software, reinstall displaylink software, plug everything back. - Didnt work.

I have a Latitude E7470 and while my 3-ring headphones with built-in mic work just fine plugged directly into the laptop, the microphone function stops working when I connect them to the headphone/mic ports on an e-plus II docking station (using this adapter).
Prior to getting this setup, I had an older Optiplex desktop (Win7), and my headphones/splitter adapter had no issues - the headphone function worked and so did the mic.
System info: Windows 10 Enterprise, v1607 and Realtek Audio driver 6.0.1.6111
These are my current settings:

Any idea what's wrong? Again, the headphone functionality works (either when I use my headphones with splitter adapter, or plug them directly into the docking station headphone port), but the microphone doesn't - I can't record any sound even though, from the screenshot above, it appears to recognize a mic has been plugged in.

Hello I've got an HP Folio 9470m together with the HP Ultraslim Docking Station (D9Y32AA#UUZ) featuring 2 DisplayPort connectors and a VGA connector. I would like to connect two digital screens to the docking station in extended mode. First I have tried to connect two screens with two DP to DVI adapters which didn't work. The screens have only been able to be used in clone mode (showing same screen content) but not in extended desktop mode. Then I thought this might be an issue of DP->DVI converters as the dock might not support this. So I bought 2 DP cables and tried multiple combinations:- 2x DP/DVI converter cable- 1x DP, 1x DP/DVI converter cable- 2x DP native Unfortunately none of the combinations worked in extended mode. The screen setup always falls back to clone mode. Intel Graphics setup menu also just shows selection between one external screen and "Monitor" (which is the laptop built-in screen). It actually works in extended mode only if I use 1 DP port and the VGA port on the docking station. So I can work in extended screen mode like this. But in year 2014 it's simply ridiculous having to connect FullHD+ screens via analog VGA. So I would like to know how to use these 2 DP connectors on the UltraSlim docking station. Even more strange I found that using the DisplayPort connector in conjunction with one of the DP connectors of the dock while docked it works in extended mode. So the laptop is able to handle it. Just the dock seems not to ... Read more

A:2x DisplayPort on HP Ultraslim Docking Station not working i...

I can't seem to find the documentation I found on a forum but the intial batch of slim docking stations WILL NOT allow 2 dp at the same time.  It is due to the architecture of the of the laptop and the docking station.  In order for two dp at the same time, you  will need to buy the 2013 one.  (I will try to find the product number for you).  Their workaround was to use VGA and DP at the same time, which you have already figured out. Update: Looks like the page is not found, however, the title says it all. http://h30094.www3.hp.com/product.aspx?sku=10731964&pagemode=ca "Alert: Dual display limitations of 2013 HP UltraSlim Docking Station with HP EliteBook Folio 9470m N..." Update #2:  Found it attached.    Can't upload pdf files

I have a Dell E5440 laptop issued to me at work. I added a Dell Latitude E Series PR03X Docking Station and recently replaced a 1920 x 1080 monitor with an LG 29UB55-B 29" UltraWide monitor with a maximum resolution of 2560 x 1080. The docking station has two ports, a DVI port and a DisplayPort. I discovered pretty quickly that the DVI port is single-link since my external monitor's resolution maxed out at 1920 x 1080. I ordered a DisplayPort cable in the hope that it will support the monitor's full resolution, but this question occurred to me:
Can the E5440 support an external monitor at that resolution? It used two video solutions, the Intel HD Graphics 4600 and a Nvidia GeForce 720M Discrete Graphics Card with 2 GB of RAM.
It uses two video solutions, the Intel HD Graphics 4600 and a Nvidia GeForce 720M Discrete Graphics Card with 2 GB of RAM, and apparently switches from one to the other depending on demand. My research suggests that both can support the resolution I need, but only through a DisplayPort. Of note, the laptop itself doesn't have a DisplayPort, but the docking station does. I don't know if that is a problem or not.
Is anyone else out there successfully driving a 2560 x 1080 monitor with a Dell docking station and laptop?

A:Can my Dell E5440 drive a 2560 x 1080 display through the docking station?

Thank you for your message. This system does support a resolution of 2560 x 1080.The maximum resolution supported by the Intel graphic card is 3840x2160.As you mentioned, you have a switchable graphic card. When there is a graphic intense application used, the system will automatically switch to the discrete card. You can also manually set the application to automatically open with the discrete card. You will need to use an HDMI – Display port adapter.

HI,
We bought Dell docking stations D3100 to go with our Dell Latitude E7450.
I’m trying to configure the laptop for when the user disconnect it from the docking station, it automatically connect back to the network Wi-Fi.
Adapter Switching work great if I use the Ethernet adapter on the laptop itself. Once I disconnect the Network cable, it looks for the Wi-Fi and connects to it with no issue.
If I connect the network cable to the docking station, once I remove the connection from the docking to the laptop(usb3), I lose the wired network and it’s not even looking for the Wi-Fi.
I did configure the Dell gigabyte adapter on the docking station to be the first priority over the Wi-Fi just like I did for the laptop network adapter.
I updated the bios, firmware and drivers.
I also looked at the bios power management: Wireless Radio Control settings
Both local area network connections are above the Wireless one (priority)
Both Local area network adapter metric are set to 10 (only 1 is in use, both are set for testing purpose) while the wireless adapter metric is set to 9999.
As anyone had this issue or was able to get this working? Am I missing something ?
thanks

Hello Together

Have Docking Station D3100 connected via USB 3.0 to my laptop.
I recognized many times that when i touch or little bit even Move my dock station, or touch any wire connect to dock station- the second monitor immediately disappeared. And in some seconds or minutes it switched again.

it seems to me that docking station reacts to outer static electricity.

Does anybody has this issue?
