Heap of trouble with T490 + Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen2

Q: Heap of trouble with T490 + Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen2

Dear helpy helpers, I am experiencing a heap of trouble when using T490 and Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen 2 together. When we recieve a new machine, we reinstall it, with a clean latest version of Windows, and run TVSU for the lastest drivers. Software wise, they get Office, Visual Studio, ReSharper, SQL Server Management Studio and Symantec. Nothing fancy. The last 3 machines hav had issues with the docks. The docks are 135W (cable plugged in the correct power port on the dock). Cable for the PC is on the back and not the front. Screens that wont run full resolution, no ethernet, no charging and the like. Checking the Thunderbolt Control Panel, the dock is connected. Reinstalling wont solve the issued, but getting new motherboards for 2 machines worked somewhat. I've been managing Lenovo laptops for 10 years now, and though i don't see myself as an expert, I have seen quite a few different models, and experienced different issues with docking solutions. Though. Nothing. Like. These. Thunderbolt. Docks. Is anyone else having trouble, or am I the only one fighthing this? I am thinking about running back to Windows 10 1809 instead of 1903, but I dont really like having to be vary of backwards compatibility with a simple setup as above. Any help would be hawt!

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi all,We've recently picked up a couple of T490 (20N2) and USB-C Gen2 docking stations (40AS),According to Lenovo spec sheets this dock only has capability to do 1x [email protected] or 2x [email protected]'ve tried 1 screen on the docking station and 1 screen via HDMI 1.4 on the T490 but even that restricts me to 30Hz, (HDMI 1.4 isn't [email protected] rated is it?)I've had a quick look at available docking stations for the T490 and can't seem to find one that natively supports dual [email protected], but I am seeing some spec sheets mentioning thunderbolt downstream? The T490 has 3 'USB-C' marked inputs on the side, USB-C AC, USB-C Thunderbolt and USB-C, the latter being a different plug than the conventional USB-C I am used to, am I able to arrange my dual [email protected] through one of those inputs instead? Or any alternative method even if it includes plugging 2 cables into the T490 is not a big deal. Thanks for your time, Best regards,Johann

I got a new T490 with a 40AS Usb C Dock. I am trying to use this with one 2560x1440 monitor and one 1280x1024 monitor. I plan on upgrading to 2x 2560x1440 in the near future. BUT. I cannot for the life of me get this to work properly. Previously I had an T440s that was perfectly capable of running my current setup, but with this new equipment, the best I can manage is OK image on the 2560x1440 monitor, and shaky image on the 1280x1024 monitor. It seems the higher the frequency content (for example thin lines) of the graphics it displays, the worse it gets. It really hurts my eyes to look at. As far as I can tell, both these setups should be supported by both the USB-C dock and the Intel UHD 620 graphics chip that is mounted in this machine. After hours of troubleshooting my frustration level is high and I am running out of ideas. Among other things I have tried:- Changed USB dock from a USB-C 40A9 to 40AS (USB-C Gen2)- I have updated the USB-C Dock Gen2 firmware to the latest version (took me three attempts before all items succeeded)- Updated all drivers I can find to the latest version- Tried with Different monitors, including a 2x 2260x1440 setup, which gives me correct resolution on only one of them, the other stops at 1280x1024- Stick the USB-C cable into the embedded USB-C connector inside the Thunderbolt connector I have seen an "USB Controller Bandwith Exceeded" error message at a few occations, and after the dock firmware ...  I am attempting to conenct multiple monitors to my x390 through the thunderbolt dock.  The first monitor comes up fine with 3840x2160 resolution.  However when I connect the second monitor it comes up as 800x600.  I do not have the option for the second display to change resolution.  x390 s connected to dock via Thinkpad TBT cable 40G I have ran lenovo software updates and I am at the latest software version for everything. I tried the windows display app and the Intel display app and both are showing the same behavior for the second monitor. I have tried reversing the order of connecting the monitors.  The first one to connect always goes to 4x, where the second one connected always reverts to 800x600 without the option to change, I have tried turning off the built-in-display to see if that would change anything, but it didn't. I have tried swapping the port on the dock that the monitors are connected to.  The first monitor always correctly displays at 4k and the second is set to a much lower resolution typically 800x600 without any options to change. The intel app has an option to change the refresh rate, so I tried changing to a few different refresh rate to see if that would change anything, and it didn't help. I had the monitors connected via hdmi, so I switched both to display port and now I get 3 options, but the max is 1280x720.  I still do not get the 4k option. I then tried one con... Hello, I am using the x1 carbon 7th gen 20QD and trying to get ethernet to work through the thunderbolt docking station.  I have installed all the drivers from the lenovo site for the gen1 and gen2 thunderbolt dock and ethernet still does not work through either thunderbolt docking station.  Ethernet works fine with the usb-c travel hub and the ethernet adaptor that plugs in next to the USB-C works as well.   I have also swapped the dock out with the thunderbolt dock on my yoga 370 and ethernet works through the dock on the yoga. Hi, I'm having issues with my external 4k display to only be able to operate at 30Hz. I have my laptop connected to a generation 2 Thunderbolt 3 dock via the provided cable, and from there I have tried both DisplayPort and HDMI cables (several) to connect to my display. All the technical information I have seen says that my laptop plus the dock should be able to operate at 60Hz even at this resolution, but I'm unable to lock down the settings that enable me to do that. I have pulled the latest BIOS, TB3 FW, display drivers, Intel chipset drivers from the product page.My screen is: AOC U3277FWQ if that matters. I'm running Windows 10 Pro 1809. Has anyone battled with the same issue? I'm running out of ideas on how to solve this. The HDMI port on the side is apparently only 1.4 so this would only support the [email protected], but I'm not using it at the moment. If I set the screen to 1920x1080, I can set the resolution to 60Hz. Best regards,_tero

I used the Lenovo System Update (v5.07.0074) and was prompted to download and install (was listed as Critical Update) the Firmware to my Dock.  As always, I closed all applications and sat as the Firmware downloaded. I got the expected prompt to ensure I was plugged in. I then watched as the upgraded prompted me to install. Installation completed and everything appeared to be fine.  I powered down the thinkpad and disconnected. Worked from the living room, then went back to the dock. Connected, and noticed that before I connected the White light on the power button was illuminated. Shrugged, and pushed the power button. Nothing. I un-plugged the Dock, got a cup of coffee, returned and plugged it back in. Nothing. I then noticed that none of the pass-through power was working on the dock.  So, I unplugged it again.  Unplugged everything connected to it, and held the power button down for 15 seconds in an effort. All of this at the recommendation of Lenovo Support. Who, by the way, was very nice and well spoken. Nothing we did worked. I happened to have another Thunderbolt 3 cable in my bag, and no change. I powered up my new X1 Yoga, and connected the cable. No power. This wasn't passing power at all. I confirmed the Intel Thunderbolt app was running, and confirmed that Windows was not even detecting the Dock.  Lenovo is sending me a replacement. Hello everyone, I recently bought a Thinkpad X1 Extreme and I am now locking for a suitable Thunderbolt 3 dock. Although I've read a lot of posts about various docks I am still a little consfused about which one to choose. It seems like the following ones would all work with the X1 Extreme:1. Lenovo ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen 2 135W:https://www.lenovo.com/ca/en/accessories-and-monitors/docking/universal-cable-docks-thunderbolt/Thun...2. ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock (170W):https://www.lenovo.com/ca/en/accessories-and-monitors/docking/universal-cable-docks-thunderbolt/Thun...3. ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock (230W):https://www.lenovo.com/ca/en/accessories-and-monitors/top-tech/Thunderbolt-WS-230W-dock-US/p/40AN023... Please correct me if I am wrong but to me it seems as if the only difference between these docks is that the workstation ones come with two AC adapters each and a special Thunderbolt/Power cable to avoid using two different cables. Or are there any other technical differences? So if I am okay with a two cable solution couldn't I just use the Lenovo ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen 2 135W and connect it via Thunderbolt while at the same time use my 135W AC adapter to charge the laptop? Thanks a lot in advance.

I have a T490 coming, and I plan to use it with my Lenovo USB-C dock (now discontinued), this one: https://www.bestbuy.com/site/lenovo-thinkpad-usb-c-docking-station/5891300.p?skuId=5891300 According to the Lenovo hardware compatibility matrix, it is compatible with the T490. Question:  which USB-C port on the T490 should I plug it into?  Or it doesn't matter? P.S.--According to what I've read, Thunderbolt is backwards compatible with DisplayPort, so it should work in either USB-C port? P.P.S.--I'm a non-demanding user.  The T490 is replacing an aged T420.  I use the USB-C dock with an E490, and data transfer is, much, much faster than the T420 ever was.  I don't really want a Thunderbolt dock--the low-end USB-C one seems just fine to me.

The TB3 workstation Gen2 dock now only comes with the 230W PSU while the previous version came with the 230W PSU + 65W PSU. My P53 came with a 230W PSU because of the RTX5000 GPU. My question is: The new dock has a power splitter that splits the 230W power into 170W and 65W according to the manual. Will this dock be compatible for my system given that it came with the 230W PSU? I'm not understanding why the reduced power input of 170W to the system is acceptable, but not the 170W PSU as an alternative to the P53 230W PSU.

I have already injected the updated Intel Chipet and Thunderbolt drivers as well as the Ethernet drivers from the dock into our boot image., but still nothing. Is there another driver I am missing here? I thought the USB-C dock driver installer had more than just the Audio and Network drivers, but from that's all I see when I extract that driver package.

Hi there, i have a new X1 Carbon 7th Gen with the new USB-C Dock Gen2. I have 3 Monitors connected with 1680x1050 native Resolution. I get only 2 working with this resolution. The third one will only get 576p. No matter if its connected to DP or HDMI. The last one doesnt get the full resolution.  I made a second test with a Lenovo ThinkVision P27h-10. I dont get it working over DP with 2560x1440 and a secondary monitor over DP. The ThinkVision Monitor falls back to 1920x1080.  All drivers are installed and the latest firmware of the Gen2 Dock is installed.  When i have connected 2 monitors to the dock and open the X1, the monitor of the x1 will get 1920 resolution. Whats wrong? I cannot belive that this new laptop isnt able to power 3 Monitors with 1680x1050 resolution.

I have a P1 GEN2 OLED. While the internet is flooded with complaints of the OLED screen itself, the thunderbolt 3 port of my P1 GEN2 magically stopped working for no reason.  I have been using the laptop with an external display ever since I got the laptop. All went well. Suddenly from yesterday, the external display starts turning into a blue sreen with "NO SIGNAL" shown on it.  I had a windows cumulcative update (KB4532693) and windows security update (KB4524244) yesterday and I suspected that the update might be the culprit. I rolled back the OS. No change. Still NO SIGNAL.  I searched this Forum. Played with Thunderbold 3 menu in the Bios. Everything was enabled and every single option of "security level" was tried. Still NO SIGNAL.  I checked Intel Mangaement Engine software. It is already the latest version. Reinstalled it. Still NO SIGNAL.  I checked Nvidia driver. Latest version already.  In sum, the problem is: the thunderbolt port is still able to power the extenal display but just simply does not pass signal to the external display. HDMI port, however, still passes signal if use an HDMI cable.  I want to give it a shot here to see if anyone has experienced similar issues and how they sovled the problem before I call Lenovo technical support, the staff of which does not seem to know more than some people here on this Forum.

I have a thinkpad X1 Yoga 4th and a USB-C gen2 dock (40AS) that neither of my two Dell U2417H monitors (one HDMI-->HDMI, the other DisplayPort-->HDMI) are detected on. I've installed the latest driver  and rebooted, etc. Everything else - network, USB keyboard & mouse, USB 3.0 hub, audio, etc. - works, but neither monitor does a thing nor does the OS detect them. The HDMI-HDMI monitor works just fine when I plug it directly into the Thinkpad (can't test the DisplayPort directly as there's none on the notebook), but nothing when I plug it back into the dock. It's worked perfectly before so I have no reason to believe there's any problem with either monitor or cable. Further, testing the theory that perhaps the ports were bad, Lenovo shipped me a second one - and the problem reoccurs, so it's unlikely it's the dock. That leaves software. There are audio and network drivers for the dock in the driver package (and they work fine), but no display drivers. Am I missing something here? There aren't that many places to go wrong.

Display seems to be disconnected and when we try to extend to this screen as it is at least visible in display settings cursor dissapears and nothing happens with the off screen. Tried to switch display port cables, switch ports and every time one screens is off. Only one thing what was working is to open laptop screen disconnect and reconnect USB-C, extend screens to all displays, close a lid and reconfigure all screens (resolution and position). Unfortunately when the computer is in deep sleep mode for a while or off this problem is back after start. I even tried display link driver and it helped on few computers but just for one day ..

Just started using TB3 Workstation dock (40AN0230EU) with P1 gen2 (20QTS06300) and ran into some issues.Hopefully someone can help as this is geting annoying really fast. Dock is flashed with latest firmware (3.1.64).P1 gen 2 is flashed with latest BIOS (1.26).230W and 135W power supplies are connected to the dock.P1 is connected to the dock via the provided absurd power+tb3 cable (if need to connect 2 power suppllies, one of which is bigger than the dock itself, wasn't absurd enough).P1 BIOS TB3 security is set to no security, TB3 BIOS assist is set to disabled, gfx is set to discreete, monitor to external. I have 3 monitors connected to the dock. After a cold reboot everything is more or less fine for a few minutes, then all the displays go blank for the moment and windows pops up a notification about slow charger being connected. This keeps going on every now and then again and again. I thought the entire point of using this absurd cable is to overcome the TB3 100W power delivery limit?

There was an issue with the P1 and BIOS 1.23 which had the same issue, but this was corrected with BIOS 1.24. It sounds like the same issue is present in the P1 Gen2.

Anyone have dealt with the same problem with Lenovos docks? All drivers and firmwares are installed from Lenovos site and the Thunderbolt3 software (the older app not the new UWP) sees the dock fine. Tried to unplug and plug back the USB keyboard but still it doesn't recognize or work.

I have a user with two LT3053s (2560 x 1600) and his previous T440 + Ultra Dock (I believe) supported the full resolution at 60 Hz (again I believe).  I upgraded him to a T480 and our standard Type-c dock that we deploy limited the screens to 1920x1080 @ 60Hz.  After this and complaints from the user of headaches from the drop in resolution we purchased a TB3 Gen 2 Dock and even after plugging the dock in to the actual TB3 port on the laptop (not the top type-c port) we are having issues with not all of his devices working, namely the kb+m. Any ideas here?  Right now we are running it with the 135W power adapter that it came with, but there is also another power adapter available that did not come with the unit we purchased.

The last most annoying problem is that there is no charging through the thunderbolt connector, the dock is in SELF POWER status. Screenshots attached.

For some reason, i can't turn on my new P51 using the power button on the Thunderbolt 3 dock.   I'm sure i've got something hooked up wrong, but thought i'd check here.   Is there a setting in Control Panel (power button) that i need to change?  In order to use my laptop / view from my external monitor, i have to open the lid to the laptop, power on and then i can use the external monitor.  thanks for any help.

As the only docking solution available and moving from a more traditional dock, its less than suitable.  HP needs to make a longer cable and the end that connects to the laptop should be at a right angle.  The cable is so stiff and thick it takes nearly 4" to make the turn.  HP makes it impossible to find this out how long the cable is with out purchasing and at that point your stuck with it.  Hardly a customer satisfaction issue they should want to propigate!

I just picked up the TB3 dock and all seems to be working, however it is not charging my laptop using the included Thunderbolt/Power combo cable. The power light shows on the dock, and connected devices work on laptop, but no power. Any ideas?

Is the new ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock compatible with P50? Dock details page (https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/cz/en/solutions/acc100356) only list P51s, but not P50. But P50 claims support for Thunderbold 3. If yes,  can I connect Ethernet LAN over the dock? And what driver I need to install?

We recently started using Bitlocker with a PIN at startup. On all our laptops using the "old"-type dock, that you click your laptop into everything is working fine, the users put the laptops into the dock, turn it on, type in the Bitlocker PIN using the external monitor and keyboard, and then processed into Windows. Our problem is with everyone using the new Lenovo ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock. When the users connect the laptops to the dock using the cable and then power on from the dock, the laptop will power on (the LED in the ThinkPad logo lights up) but the monitors and keyboard connected to the dock is not working, and then after some time the laptop will power off again. We currently use a workaround where the users power on, type in the Bitlocker PIN and login to Windows before connecting the laptop to the dock, but this not a proper solution. We have Enabled both "Thunderbolt(TM) device" and "USB device" under "Support in Pre Boot Environment" in the "Thunderbolt 3"-menu in BIOS, but it still doesn't work. Have anyone else experienced this problem? Or does anyone know of a proper solution.

Hi allWell we all now about the fan issue which is much better since the last BIOS update.Nevertheless I have sometimes fluctuation fan noise, although there is no load. This is mainly when the notebook is at the thunderbolt docking station.I found out, that as soon as I connect my notebook to the docking station more or less all app-processes suddenly move over and start running on the GPU. The CPU has virtually no load. Why do all processes start to run on GPU when the notebook is connected to the dock? Is this an issue or is there a good reason for this behaviour? My Notebook and Windos has the latest drivers/bios and updates installed.Regards,Sebastian

Love the concept of the thunderbolt 3 dock, can't fathom how it was designed though.  On my zBook 15 G3, the power and thunderbolt ports are on the right side of the laptop.  The dock has the cable port on the left rear side, completely crossing over all the ports when you put the dock on a desk with the back facing away from  you.  Then they ship a cable that is barely long enough to put the dock directly behind the laptop and connect it.   Where do I buy a longer cable HP, please!

Hello all,I bought a Yoga X1 2018 and during the shop they suggest the Lenovo Thunderbolt 3 Dock. Since I thought that having to disconnect only one cable when bringin the laptop from the desk to the meeting room would have been useful, I bought it.With my disappointment I setup everything and I did some tests on the laptop just to discover that the performance of the laptop when powered through the docking station are 1/3 with respect to when it's powered by the 65W power supply and 1/2 of when the laptop is on battery... (234pt vs 640pt vs 563pt | dock/65W/battery)Now since the docking station has a 135W power supply, I really can't think that this is an issue with the supply from the docking. Also since the laptop is even faster on battery I really don't understand how it could be related to the power supply... anyway I've connected both the 65W power supply and the docking and the performance are back to normal. Is there anyone who can suggest me what's going on or how to report this to Lenovo?

A:Thunderbolt 3 dock & Yoga X1 3rd gen

Currently have an X1 Carbon 5th Gen - 20HR, that is experiencing susbtantial issues with the Thunderbolt dock now.  I'll start with some initial info to set the stage. -----------------------X1 Carbon 5th Gen - 20HR Machine TypeWindows 10 Pro - 1903 - build 18356.21Thunderbolt 3 dock, dual Display (thinkvision P24Q), one hdmi and one display portAll updates for windows and lenovo, using thinkvantage tool.  Including latest thunderbolt firmware deployed yesterday (v.17.0.0.1).Problem device - PCI-to-PCI bridge - version 10.0.18356.1----------------------- Symptoms.Starting about 3 weeks ago, started experiencing an issue where by if I start the laptop off the dock, and plug in to the dock, none of the USB devices connected to the dock will work.  The displays work fine, but none of the USB devices do.  Such as camera, keyboard/mouse, external HD, etc. Upon opening device manager, I will always see a PCI-to-PCI bridge device in a non functional state, stating the driver has failed, subsequent attempts to update driver or completely uninstall all PCI-to-PCI bridge devices and rediscover them won't work.  Nothing fixes the issue but a reboot with the dock connected. Even with the dock functional, I now experience a strange issue whereby one of the two monitors will randomly flash (meaning go black and than almost immediately come back on). If I start the laptop on the dock, disconnect, and reconnect, I still have the same issues.&...
